Bengaluru CEO Suchana Seth visited Goa with her son a week before returning to kill him there

0

39-year-old Mindful AI Lab CEO Suchana Seth, who killed her four-year-old son in Goa, had visited the state for 5 days, a week before returning there to kill her son, an Indian Express report stated. Seth had smothered her child to death in her hotel room before stuffing his body in a bag.

Suchana Seth had reached Goa on 31st December 2023 and stayed at a five star hotel for five days during the New Year celebrations. Two days later, as part of a “last-minute” plan, Seth went back to Goa and checked into Hotel Sol Banyan Grande on January 6. It was at this hotel that she killed her son.

Seth smothered her son to death at the hotel, packed his body in a bag and attempted to flee back to Bengaluru in a cab on 8th January. She was arrested on the way back at the Aimangala Police Station in Chitradurga police station in Karnataka.

During the routine cleaning after Seth’s departure, the hotel staff noticed blood stains in the room. The hotel management was informed, which promptly informed the Calangute Police at 11 AM. The police reviewed the hotel’s CCTV footage and noted that Seth left without her son.

Sensing something was wrong, Police Inspector Naik took the taxi driver’s number from the hotel staff and called him. When he questioned Suchana about her son, she told the inspector that she left him with a friend at Fatorda. Police checked the address given by Suchana in Fatorda and found it to be fake.

Interestingly, the cab driver Royjohn D’Souza played a key role in Suchana Seth’s arrest. On January 8, the cab driver received a call from the Goa Police and asked if his passenger was alone or a child was with her. The police were talking in Konkani, which the woman didn’t understand. Police told him them that they found bloodstains in her hotel room and they had a suspicion about her. The police then asked him to hand over the phone to Suchana and asked her about her son, and she claimed that she left her son at a friend’s house, and have them an address.

After confirming that Suchana was lying about her son, the officers called the driver again some time later, and ordered him to take the cab to the nearest police station, without telling Suchana. The cab was already in Karnataka at the time. The driver headed to the Aimangala Police Station where Suchana Seth was detained.

The accused allegedly committed the crime to keep her estranged husband from visiting their son as part of his visitation rights. The couple’s divorce is currently underway. According to reports, Seth was upset after a court order allowed her estranged husband, who is from Kerala, to see their son every Sunday. She then allegedly planned to murder her son just a day before the scheduled meeting.

Supreme Court stays Allahabad HC order appointing court-monitored survey of the disputed Shahi Idgah in Mathura

0

On Tuesday (16th January), the Supreme Court halted the Allahabad High Court judgment appointing an Advocate Commissioner to visit the Shahi Eidgah mosque in Mathura as part of the Krishna Janmabhoomi litigation.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta issued the interim order while issuing notice on a special leave petition presented by the mosque committee against the Allahabad High Court’s December 14 order, which allowed an application for the appointment of a court commissioner to inspect the mosque.

Advocate Tasneem Ahmadi, representing the Mosque Committee, said that the High Court could not have issued the ruling while an application to reject the matter as barred by the Places of Worship Act 1991 (under ruling VII Rule 11 CPC) is pending. She also relied on the recent decision in Asma Latheef v Shabbir Ahmad, which stated that when a suit’s maintainability is called into doubt, the trial court must first consider whether it has jurisdiction before giving interim relief.

While adopting the legal contention on a prima facie basis, the bench highlighted concerns about how the commission application was filed.

“We have reservations about this application. Look at the prayer. It’s very ambiguous. Read it. You cannot create an omnibus application like this. You have to be very clear about what you want the local commissioner to do,” Justice Khanna instructed Senior Advocate Shyam Divan, representing the plaintiffs.

“There are legal concerns that arise. Apart from that, the application for a local commissioner could be clearer. Is it possible to create an application like this?”… We are staying the operation of the impugned order until the commission is completed,” Justice Khanna stated.

The bench issued a notice to return the petition by January 23, 2024. “Some legal issues arise for consideration, including the question in light of a judgment of this court in Asma Lateef. Proceedings before the High Court can continue but the commission will not be executed in the meantime,” the bench stated in its order.

The Allahabad High Court’s decision granted an application under Order XXVI Rule 9 of the Code of Criminal Procedure filed on behalf of the deity Bhagwan Shri Krishna Virajman and seven others in an initial lawsuit.

The proposal claimed that the birthplace of the Hindu God Krishna was located beneath the structure, and it provided evidence to support the structure’s Hindu origins. The primary claim, which is currently pending before the Allahabad High Court, seeks a ruling that Lord Shree Krishna Virajman owns the disputed land, which includes the structure of Shahi Eidgah Mosque. The plea also seeks that the defendants, including the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board, remove the structure in question.

The day after the high court issued this ruling, Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi attempted to have the order for the appointment of a court commissioner delayed or stayed orally before the Supreme Court, which was considering a special leave petition filed by the mosque committee contesting an order from the Allahabad High Court dated May 2023 that transferred several suits related to the land dispute to itself. Senior Advocate Ahmadi was told that the order had not been formally challenged. Later, the Mosque panel filed a special leave petition to formally challenge the High Court’s order.

The mosque committee contended in its special leave petition that the High Court should have weighed its appeal for the plaint’s rejection before deciding on any other miscellaneous motions in the matter. The Committee has requested that the plaint be rejected because the claim is precluded under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991. The mere fact that the application for commission appointment was filed eight days before the application for plaint rejection did not justify determining the former first.

The mosque committee has also challenged the plaintiffs’ allegations, claiming that they failed to give substantial proof to support their claim that Lord Krishna’s recognized birthplace, is beneath the Shahi Eidgah mosque. The committee also questioned the plaintiffs’ request for an in-depth poll to validate their claims, describing it as simple speculation. It further claimed that the plaintiffs had an ulterior motive for attempting to demolish the mosque while the dispute was still pending.

Denying the argument about specific architectural aspects indicating a Hindu origin, the mosque committee described the plaintiffs’ plea as a transparent attempt to ‘deceive the court into believing Mughal architectural styles were Hindu religious symbols’.

It further maintained that unless the plaintiffs’ major prayer – the revocation of the 1973 and 1974 judgments – is addressed, the stage for evaluating the building’s factual situation, as indicated in the application, is rendered ineffective.

Telugu film HanuMan, made for Rs 20 crore, becomes 1st blockbuster of 2024 surpassing KGF 1 and Kantara in 1st weekend box office collections

The recent Telugu superhero movie ‘HanuMan,’ which stars Teja Sajja in the lead role, has surpassed the first-weekend box office collections of the superhit Kannada films ‘KGF Chapter 1’ and ‘Kantara’ and seems to be at par with Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa’ on its third day of release.

With estimated opening weekend earnings of Rs 40 crore, ‘HanuMan,’ which was made at a budget of Rs 20 crore, has outperformed some big-budget films’ opening weekend totals paving its way to become the first blockbuster of the year 2024.

According to film industry tracker Sacnilk, the film grossed Rs 64.75 crore within four days of its release in India. The movie brought in a net revenue of Rs 15.2 crore on its fourth day of release in theatres. In light of its success at the global box office, the movie has brought in a total of Rs 94.75 crore, including Rs 30 crore from overseas and Rs 55.85 crore from India.

Comparing it with KGF and Kantara, KGF had collected Rs 10.75 crore and Rishabh Shetty’s Kantara had collected Rs 3.7 crore on the first Monday of its release.

Aside from this, the movie brought in about Rs 40 crore over its opening weekend. On the first day, it made Rs 8 crore, but after that, there was a significant increase. The movie brought in Rs 28.21 crore in Telugu and Rs 0.19 crore in Tamil. Similarly, it made Rs 0.19 crore in Kannada and Rs 0.06 crore in Malayalam.

Specifically speaking of the Hindi version, it brought in Rs 2.70 crore on Friday and Rs 4.85 crore on Saturday. Sunday’s revenue, however, was Rs 7.65 crore. As a result, the movie brought in Rs 15.20 crore net across the Hindi belt in just three days.

Comparing Kantara’s and KGF’s earnings in the Hindi belt, Kantara made Rs 7.52 crore and KGF Chapter 1 made Rs 9.20 crore over their first weekends, respectively. This indicates unequivocally that Hanuman has vanquished both of them. In terms of earnings, HanuMan is almost at par with the movie Pushpa, which grossed 12.68 crores in its first weekend.

Confirming the same, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on X on Monday, “Here’s the big surprise… #HanuMan first *3-day* [opening weekend] total is higher than #KGF [first part] and #Kantara, at par with #Pushpa [note: all #Hindi dubbed versions]… Yes, you read it right! #HanuMan emerges first hit of 2024… Packs an impressive total in its *opening weekend*… While mass pockets continue to dominate, the national chains have also joined the party… Fri 2.15 cr, Sat 4.05 cr, Sun 6.06 cr. Total: ₹ 12.26 cr. #India biz. Note: #Hindi version.”

Owing to the love the audiences are showering on the Telugu mythological movie HanuMan, there is a possibility that it may soon join the 100 crore club.

Rajasthan Jal Jeevan Mission money laundering case: ED raids locations linked to Gehlot regime ex-Minister Mahesh Joshi

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted searches at more than half a dozen locations across Rajasthan as part of its money laundering investigation into the implementation of the Centre’s ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’, sources said.

The raids have been underway since morning under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The places searched included the premises of former Minister Mahesh Joshi, said the sources.

ED’s fresh move in the case comes almost two-and-a-half months after it raided 25 locations in Rajasthan including the premises of a senior IAS officer, some engineers, contractors and former state government officials suspected to have links in the case.

The agency had launched the raids in November last year and the places they searched were based in Jaipur and Dausa city of Rajasthan.

On September 1, the ED also carried out similar raids at several cities in Rajasthan.

The ED’s money laundering case is based on a First Information Report earlier registered by Rajasthan Police. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena had in June alleged a scam of Rs 20,000 crore in the implementation of the Central government’s ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ in Rajasthan.

He had alleged that tenders worth Rs 900 crore were issued to two firms based on fake experience certificates in 48 projects of the scheme.

The ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through household tap connections and is being implemented by the Rajasthan Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).

SFJ terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun issues another threat, this time against PM Modi on Republic Day

On 16th January, terrorist organisation Sikhs For Justice’s chief and designated terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun issued a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Republic Day. In a video released by SFJ, graffiti in Delhi’s Chander Vihar was shown with a “Khalistan voter registration” message.

Source: X

In the audio message, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun accused PM Modi of the assassination of Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He claimed that PM Modi is on the “radar” of pro-Khalistan Sikhs. He further threatened that on Republic Day, SFJ would avenge the “assassination” of Nijjar and would raise the Khalistan flag. He then “dared” PM Modi to come to Delhi without security, and SFJ would “avenge” the assassination of Nijjar.

It has become a habit for US citizen and designated Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun to issue threats to the Indian Prime Minister, Union Ministers, and diplomats before special events such as Republic Day. For years, Pannun has been indulging in such activities. A few days ago, he also released a statement urging multinational companies not to invest in Vibrant Gujarat, a state-level program to attract investments. In his message, he called the Indian government “Nazi”.

Interestingly, Sikhs For Justice, whose social media handles have been withheld or blocked in India, have bought a “Golden Verified Mark” on X (formerly Twitter). It means SFJ is paying USD 1,000 to X every month for the same under the X Premium membership program for businesses. It is a matter of concern that X has allowed a terrorist organisation to have a verified account, that too, a business account, on its platform.

Who is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is a US-based Khalistani terrorist who has citizenship in both the US and Canada. He poses as an attorney in the US and claims to be a front-runner in the fight for the rights of Sikhs. In reality, he consistently propagates the Khalistani sentiments and often issues threats against India. He has been actively promoting violence against Indian diplomats in Canada, the US and other countries where pro-Khalistani Sikhs have been living. He was designated as a terrorist by the Government of India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his anti-India activities. His organisation, Sikhs For Justice, was also listed as a terrorist outfit by the Government of India.

The murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and accusations against India

In June 2023, Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Canada by unknown assailants, probably as a result of a gang war. However, in September 2023, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, accused India of being involved in the murder.

Following the accusations, Canada also expelled a senior Indian diplomat. India categorically denied any involvement in the murder and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in retaliation.

Furthermore, 41 more Canadian diplomats were asked to leave the country and warned to strip them of their diplomatic immunity. In October, the diplomats of Canada left India.

Canada tried to gather support from its Western allies but failed to do so. Even after months of the diplomatic blunder that Canada made, India is yet to receive any credible evidence that Indian agents were involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has also raised the issue that the Canadian government has been harbouring terrorists and giving them political and financial backing on its soil. Since the accusations, Indian diplomats and Hindus living in Western countries are facing threats from the Khalistani elements.

‘All Hindus should unite to celebrate Ramotsav, do not fall for rumors’: Sringeri Math Shankaracharya tells ahead of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha

On Monday (15th January), citing the occasion of the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti, Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji released a video asking the Hindu citizens to worship Lord Ram on 22nd January. Sringeri Shankaracharya stated that as the Pran Pratishtha ceremony will take place in Ayodhya on 22nd January, all the devotees shall recite Lord Ram’s name (Ram naam) and seek blessings of Shri Ram.

“This is the moment for which Hindus have struggled for the last 500 years. Everybody is happy and satisfied as the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha is taking place in Ayodhya on 22nd January. We all have to unitedly participate in the event and seek blessings of Lord Ram,” he said.

He also stated that Shringeri has a special connection to Shri Ram’s birthplace at Ayodhya and that Maharshi Rushya Shringa of Shringeri was approached by King Dashrath for Mahayagya before the birth of Lord Ram. “It is due to this yagya that Lord Ram took birth on this Earth. So there is a special connection between Shringeri and Ayodhya,” he added.

“It is important that we worship Lord Ram from wherever we will be on 22nd January. We all must unitedly seek the blessings of Lord Rama and ignore the false propaganda that is being spread against the Shringeri Math,” he affirmed.

Earlier, on 12th January, top spiritual leaders of Sanatan Hindu Dharma, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Dwarka SharadaPeetham and Sringeri Math had issued statements addressed to Lord Ram devotees regarding the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the idol of Lord Ram in Ayodhya on 22nd January. They denounced the fallacies disseminated in social media by vested interests and extended their firm support and blessings to the Pran Pratishtha event. They were reacting to claims by Congress leaders and others that four Shankaracharyas in India including the Shankaracharyas of Dwarka and Sringeri math have opposed the Pran Pratishtha ceremony and that they are not attending the event.

It was claimed that Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati of Badrikashram Jyotirmath in Uttarakhand, Shankaracharya Swami Shri Nischalananda Saraswati of Purvaamnaya Govardhanmath in Puri, Shankaracharya Swami Shri Bharati Teerth Ji of Sringeri Mutt and Shankaracharya Shri Swami Sadanand Saraswati of Paschimannaya Dwarka Shardapeeth are opposed the way the pran pratishtha ceremony is being held, and they will not attend the ceremony.

While the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath and Puri have indeed said that they will not attend the event, no such announcements were made by Dwarka and Sringeri, but their names were also added to the claims. They have not said that they are opposed to the ceremony, and have not said that the Ram Mandir is incomplete, as claimed by several opposition leaders. Therefore the Dwarka and Sringeri Maths have issued statements refuting such claims, and they urged the devotees to celebrate the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

An official statement was released by Sringeri Math stated, “It is a matter of joy for all Astikas (believers in Sanatan Dharma) that after a struggle of about five centuries, the Prana-pratishtha (consecration ceremony) is to take place in the beautiful temple constructed for Bhagavan Sri Rama in the Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Kshetra of sacred Ayodhya on Pushya Shukla Dvadashi (22-1-2024).”

The statement slammed the vicious elements who tried to pollute the auspicious occasion with their misinformation and fictitious claims. “It has been noted that during such an occasion, certain ill-wishers of our Dharma have used the name of ‘www.dainikjagran.com’ in social media to spread a post, which carries a photo of Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada Peethadheeshwara, His Holiness Paramapujya Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji and conveys that the Sringeri Shankaracharya in a message has expressed displeasure over the Prana-pratishtha.”

It further refuted the unfounded assertions and highlighted, “However, the Sringeri Shankaracharya has not given any such message. This is merely false propaganda by ill-wishers of our Dharma. All Astikas are hence requested to disregard such false propaganda and take note of what has only been published by the official website (www.sringeri.net) and official social media platforms of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.”

Punjab: Nihang Sikh kills youth at Gurudwara over allegation of sacrilege, uploads video of the youth before murdering him

0

On Tuesday (16th January) morning, a Nihang Sikh allegedly killed a youth at a gurudwara in Phagwara, Punjab, on suspicion of sacrilege. The accused identified as Ramandeep Singh Mangu Math, posted the footage of the youth before murdering him and claimed responsibility for the murder.

After committing the heinous crime, the accused locked himself inside the Chaura Khooh Gurudwara. Senior police officers rushed to the scene when they were informed about the incident and recovered the body of the victim but he has not been identified yet. The accused is also yet to be arrested.

The victim in a video posted by X user @Arya_Anviksha_ acknowledges that he was sent to desecrate Gurudwara Shri Choura Khooh Sahib, but he clears that he did not carry out the act. He is heard saying, “I did not commit sacrilege; I am an honest and hardworking man.”

This is probably the video the Nihang Sikh shared on social media before killing the youth.

Sacrilege is the act of breaching or disrespecting something considered sacred or holy. This includes violating religious sites, artefacts, or symbols, as well as participating in conduct that is objectionable to a specific religious community.

Punjab has experienced numerous incidents of violence and sacrilege events in recent years.

Last year, protests erupted after a man allegedly attacked two ‘granthis’ (Sikh priests) and desecrated the ‘Guru Granth Sahib’ at a gurudwara in Morinda. The accused, Jasvir Singh, had been apprehended by the Punjab Police.

In a video of the event that circulated on social media, Jasvir was seen entering the sanctum sanctorum of medieval Gurudwara Kotwali Sahib Kotwali after crossing the railing and then hitting two ‘granthis’ reciting Gurbani, before throwing the holy book on the ground. Jasvir was later overpowered and beaten by worshippers at the temple. He was then turned over to the police.

In another incident reported in November 2023, a Punjab home guards constable was killed and five policemen were injured in a clash with Nihang Sikhs in Kapurthala’s Sultanpur Lodhi. The deceased constable has been identified as Jaspal Singh, who was posted at Sultanpur Lodhi police station.

The incident happened as two of the Nihang groups had been at loggerheads for the past days over the control of the Gurudwara Akal Bunga situated opposite to main Gurudwara Ber Sahib. The Nihangs, who were heavily armed, had locked the Gurudwara from the inside. The police had barricaded the whole area and initiated talks with the Nihang group to vacate the possession. However, clashes erupted and the police home guard constable was killed.

NITI Aayog says 24.82 crore Indians have been lifted from multidimensional poverty in last 9 years, UP shows best performance

India has made significant strides in terms of reducing poverty on a multidimensional level. As per the discussion paper released by NITI Aayog, there has been a remarkable decline from 29.17% in 2013-2014 to 11.28% in 2022-23. The numbers translate to approximately 24.82 crore people escaping poverty during this period.

The data is based on the National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which uses the Alkire Foster methodology. It assesses poverty across 12 indicators aligned with sustainable development goals, including child and adolescent mortality, nutrition, years of schooling, school attendance, maternal health, cooking fuel, electricity, drinking water, assets, housing and bank accounts.

As per the discussion paper by NITI Aayog, Uttar Pradesh showed the most significant progress in terms of decline in poverty. The data showed around 5.94 crore people escaped poverty in the given period. Bihar followed UP with 3.77 crore people escaping poverty and Madhya Pradesh with 2.30 crore people. Historically, these states had high poverty rates and have demonstrated remarkable progress, significantly contributing to the national reduction in poverty levels.

The government of India’s initiatives played a vital role in helping people to escape poverty. Programs such as Poshan Abhiyan and Anaemia Mukt Bharat enhanced healthcare access. Under the National Food Security Act, Targeted Public Distribution System helped provide food security to a large population segment. Other schemes, including Mission Poshan 2.0, Saksham Anganwadi, Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN), and Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan collectively helped in improving health and nutrition across the country.

Furthermore, PM Awas Yojna provided housing to 4 crore homes for the underprivileged. The Ujjwala Yojna provided clean cooking gas to 31 crore individuals. Programs like Saubhagya provided better electricity coverage to the last mile, benefitting an additional 2.86 crore households. Not to forget, campaigns like Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevam Mission also significantly improved sanitation facilities and provided tap water connections.

The government of India aims to reduce multidimensional poverty below 1% further. Reports suggest that the GoI is on the right track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1.2, targeting the reduction of multidimensional poverty by at least half, well ahead of the deadline of 2030. India is expected to reach single-digit poverty levels during 2024, thanks to the initiatives started and progressed by the union government. In recent years, India has demonstrated a faster pace of poverty reduction compared to earlier periods, which shows the dedication and zeal of the central leadership towards the betterment of the people of India.

Iowa caucuses: Vivek Ramaswamy drops out of US Presidential race, puts weight behind Donald Trump who scored record-breaking votes

0

Vivek Ramaswamy has withdrawn his candidacy from the race for US President following a lack of votes in the Iowa caucuses. “It is true that we did not achieve the surprise that we wanted to deliver tonight. It is just a hard fact that we are gonna have to accept,” he said.

“As of this moment, we are going to suspend this Presidential campaign,” the Indian-American businessman said. Ramaswamy congratulated former President Donald Trump for winning the Iowa caucuses.

Ramaswamy also endorsed Trump saying that the latter will have his full backing for the presidency. “Tomorrow, I will join Donald Trump at a rally in New Hampshire to share our vision for the country’s future,” Ramaswamy said.

The Indian-American entrepreneur said that he will work to make sure that Donald Trump is the next President of the United States.

Donald Trump won the Iowa caucuses with 51.1% votes gaining 20 delegates followed by Ron DeSantis at 21.2%, Nikki Haley at 19.1% and Vivek Ramaswamy at 7.7%.

Ramaswamy has been a firebrand US Presidential candidate with his outspoken campaigning and debates grabbing eyeballs and making headlines in the US and beyond.

Ramaswamy was often questioned about his religion and how he would appeal to the largely Christian populace as a non-Christian leader. The underlying message of his campaign was better to speak the truth and lose than lie and win.

Meanwhile Trump as reportedly won every county in Iowa. It is said that no Republican has ever won a contested Iowa Caucus by more than 12.8%, a record broken by Trump by 30%.

“Every other candidate needs to drop out, follow Vivek Ramaswamy’s example tonight, and rally behind Trump or else you’re a Democrat,” wrote investigative journalist Laura Loomer on X.

Trump supporters and Republicans are rejoicing on social media marking his victory in the caucuses as the return of the former President of the United States.

Houthis hit US-owned cargo ship in Red Sea with missile, areas near US consulates in Erbil, Iraq bombed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard

A Houthi anti-ship ballistic missile hit a US-owned and operated cargo ship on Monday, US Central Command announced in a statement, CNN reported.

The attack against the Gibraltar Eagle seems to be the first time the Houthis have successfully hit a US-owned or operated ship, increasing the stakes in the Red Sea after the US pledged that further Houthi launches would be given a response.

The Houthi attack comes just days after a US-led coalition conducted strikes against the Iranian-backed rebel group in Yemen. The US warned more strikes were possible if the Houthis continued to attack, CNN reported.

The M/V Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier owned and operated by US-based Eagle Bulk, suffered no injuries or significant damage, US Central Command said.

In a post shared on X, US Central Command stated, “On Jan. 15 at approximately 4 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and struck the M/V Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged, U.S.-owned and operated container ship. The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey.”

In addition, the US Central Command also added that another anti-ship ballistic missile was fired toward the southern parts of the Red Sea shipping routes, at around 2 pm on Sanaa time. However, the missile failed to reach the sea and impacted within Yemeni land territory.

In a statement, Eagle Bulk Shipping said that the Gibraltar Eagle, which is carrying a cargo of steel products, was hit “by an unidentified projectile” roughly 100 miles offshore in the Gulf of Aden.

The statement said, “As a result of the impact, the vessel suffered limited damage to a cargo hold but is stable and is heading out of the area.” It further stated, “All seafarers onboard the vessel are confirmed to be uninjured,” according to CNN report.

The UK Maritime Security Agency (UKMTO) said it had received a report regarding the incident. Eagle Bulk Shipping stated it was in “close contact with all relevant authorities.”

The Maritime Security Agency said, “Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.”

The Houthis took responsibility for the attack, saying they fired a number of “direct” and “accurate” missiles, CNN reported.

Earlier on Monday, the Houthis tried to fire an anti-ship ballistic missile that failed in flight and crashed in Yemen, according to a statement released by US Central Command. No injuries or damage were reported in the incident, US Central Command said.

In a post shared on X, US Central Command stated, “Earlier in the day, at approximately 2 p.m. (Sanaa time), US Forces detected an anti-ship ballistic missile fired towards the Southern Red Sea commercial shipping lanes. The missile failed in flight and impacted land in Yemen. There were no injuries or damage reported.”

Meanwhile, UK-based maritime security group Ambrey said that a total of three missiles were launched towards the Red Sea on Monday, CNN reported. According to the group, two of the three missiles did not reach the sea, and the third one affected a US-owned and operated vessel.

After the US and UK carried out strikes against Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen on Thursday, the Biden administration said the US would defend its assets and interests in the region. Following the strikes, Houthis vowed to retaliate, saying that any US or UK asset would be a “legitimate target.”

Since mid-November, the Houthis have launched approximately 30 attacks toward international shipping lanes, forcing many of the world’s largest shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea.

On Thursday, the US and UK hit 28 separate Houthi sites in an attempt to disrupt the group’s ability to fire on international shipping lanes in the Red Sea. The strikes carried out by the US and UK were backed by Canada, Australia, Bahrain, and the Netherlands.

Following the strikes, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that the Royal Air Force has conducted targeted strikes against military facilities used by Houthi rebels in Yemen, calling it “limited, necessary, and proportionate action in self-defence.”

Rishi Sunak said the UK will always stand up for “freedom of navigation and the free flow of trade.” He stated that the Houthis, despite the repeated warnings from the international community, continue to conduct attacks in the Red Sea, including against UK and US warships.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden said that the targeted strikes were a clear message that the escalation of attacks by the Houthi rebels against commercial vessels would not be tolerated.

In his statement, Biden said these strikes were in direct response to “Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea, including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history.”

After the missile strike on the US-owned ship, tensions in the area are expected to escalate.

Meanwhile, areas near the US consulate in Iraq’s Erbil were bombed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGS) has taken responsibility for the attacks near the US consulate in Erbil, ABC News reported. The IRGS said it was targeting the “headquarters of spies” and “anti-Iranian terrorist gatherings in parts of the region” with ballistic missiles.

Four people were killed in the bombings carried out by IRGS, ABC News reported citing an Iraqi security source. The Iraqi security source said there were no coalition forces or American forces killed in the bombing in Erbil.

According to the source, coalition forces shot down three drones near Erbil airport in Iraq. Air traffic has stopped in Erbil, ABC News reported citing an Iraqi security source.

According to the source, the bombing was very violent. The source said eight locations were targeted near the US Consulate.
