Not the first time an FPO has been taken back, won’t affect perception of India: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

0

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said that regulators independent of the government will do their jobs and that a pullout of FPO pullout will not have any impact on the perception of India.

“Regulators are independent of the government and they are left to themselves to do what is appropriate so the market is well regulated,” the Finance Minister said while addressing a post-Budget 2023-24 conference in Mumbai on Saturday. “This is not the first time that some FPO (follow-on public offering) is taken back. How many times that has affected the image of the country?”

On Wednesday, Adani Enterprises decided not to go-ahead with its fully subscribed Follow-on Public Offer (FPO), with the Group chairman Gautam Adani stating on Thursday that it would not be “morally correct” to go ahead with the Rs 20,000-crore share in the current market condition.

A report by the New York-based short seller had on January 24, accused Adani Group of brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud among others.

The US-based firm, in its report, raised concerns about shares of Adani group companies having a possibility of declining from their current levels, owing to high valuations.

In response, Adani Group said Hindenburg’s report was not an attack on any specific company but a “calculated attack” on India, its growth story, and ambitions. It added the report was “nothing but a lie”.

In its rebuttal, Hinderburg said Adani has “stoked a nationalist narrative” that seeks to conflate the “meteoric rise and the wealth of its chairman, Gautam Adani, with the success of India itself.”

In today’s press conference in Mumbai addressing a query about Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)’s exposure to the Adani Group, the Union minister said, “LIC have themselves come on the issue about their exposure to the Company (Adani).”

The Finance Minister said the government wants to sustain the recovery which had kept India at a good level of growth.

“We want to sustain the recovery which had kept India at a good level of growth, which no country – except for one because it’s fuel rich – has managed to reach,” she said.

Sitharaman added, “…and the credit goes to the people of India for somehow absorbing all the little help the government has come up with, either in the form of relief or a policy between 2022 and today.” She added that this recovery momentum should not be lost.

The minister added, “It was an expressed desire of the Prime Minister that capital expenditure should be kept up and that is why it has reached Rs 10 lakh crore.”

On the purpose of her visit to the financial capital, the Union finance minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had highlighted that it would serve well if the finance ministry goes all over the country and explain what is the idea behind the Budget.

“For the past three to four years we have started a process that we go to places post-budget and discuss the budget with stakeholders. Take their suggestions etc and include those suggestions into the amendments of the Budget. This was the first such outreach in Mumbai after this Budget,” the finance minister said.

Banned PFI member Sultan Usman Khan posts provocative video, vows to replace Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir with Babri Masjid

On February 1, Sultan Usman Khan, a member of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), posted a video on social media indicating and vowing to replace the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya with Babri Mosque. The video was posted as Shaligram stones or Shaligram Shila from Nepal were being transported to Ayodhya for the construction of the Ram temple.

Khan posted the video on Facebook and said, “This stone is being taken to Ayodhya for Ram Temple, for RSS’ temple which is being built on our Babri Masjid. Take this stone there today but remember Babri Masjid will be built one day at the same place. Babri Masjid Jindabad. Nara-e-Takhbeer Allah-hu-Akhbar.”

The video was widely shared on social media and has attracted a large number of likes and comments on Facebook. Khan is a resident of Chakia, Bihar and reports suggest that he posted the video in the wake of recent NIA raids in the East Champaran district in Bihar.

The Police took cognizance of the incident and said that Khan was saying some objectionable things targeting a community that might create unrest in the country. “We have seen the video, veracity of which is being investigated scientifically. Further legal action will be taken after verifying the veracity of the video,” said SP Kantesh Kumar Mishra.

Reports mention that Khan had posted another video in the past in which he could be seen training some young Muslim men by hoisting the PFI flag. The video was posted by Khan in which he mentioned that he was a PFI member. However, he is said to have deleted the account and created a new one later in which he mentioned that he is an SDPI member.

The Shaligram stones, also known as the Shaligram Shila, arrived in Ayodhya on February 3 and are to be used to make the idols of Lord Shri Ram and Sita Maa. The stones were unearthed in Nepal’s Kali Gandaki river and are 60 million years old. The idols will be erected in Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, which is currently under construction.

Notably, the Centre on September 27 last year issued a notification banning the Islamist organization Popular Front of India and its affiliate organizations. The MHA stated that the organizations including All India Imams Council, Campus Front of India (CFI), Rehab India Foundation, National Conf of Human Rights Org, National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation, and Rehab Foundation operated unlawfully and needed to be banned under UAPA.

The ban on the PFI came after two rounds of searches by the NIA in a multi-agency investigation against the organization for sponsoring terror operations in the nation. The initial series of raids occurred on September 22, with a follow-up on Tuesday, September 27 in multiple states, resulting in the arrest of at least 250 persons associated with PFI.

The NIA officials also recovered several incriminating materials from the PFI hubs located in around 17 states of the country. Prominent among them include a brochure and CD related to ‘Mission 2047’. The PFI members had also planned to blow up the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya and build Babri Masjid at the same location. They also had planned to make India an Islamic country by 2047, the year in which India would complete 100 years of its Independence.

‘Will return in July 2023’: Olympian Dipa Karmakar breaks silence on doping ban

On Saturday (February 4), Indian gymnast and Olympian, Dipa Karmarkar, spoke about the ban handed out to her by the International Testing Agency (ITA) for the use of the prohibited substance, Higenamine.

In a statement, she said, “Today marks the end of one of the longest battles I have fought for myself and my career.” Dipa Karmakar informed that the matter came to light in October 2021 when a sample was taken for ‘out-of-competition’ testing and assessment.

“The result was positive for a banned substance which I unknowingly ingested and could not determine the source of. I decided to take a provisional suspension with the hope of a swift resolution with the international federation,” she emphasised.

The Indian Olympian pointed out that her suspension by the ITA has been decreased by 3 months and back-dated by 2 and half months. As such, she can return to the professional gymnastics arena in July this year.

“I am happy that the matter has been amicably resolved,” she said. Dipa Karmarkar emphasised, “Multiple media reports have speculated that was under a 2-year suspension for failing to inform WADA of my whereabouts through the Anti-Doping Administration Management System (ADAMS).”

However, I would like to clarify that these are false and inaccurate and do not reveal the true facts and nature of the matter…It has been distressful to not know how the substances entered my body, however, more so to be in a position where my ethics have been questioned,” she asserted.

“Never in my career has the thought of consuming a banned substance crossed my mind. Gymnastics is all have, and I would never do anything which would bring myself or my country into disrepute,” Dipa Karmakar concluded.

It must be mentioned that the gymnast hails from the Northeastern State of Tripura and came to the limelight after qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Despite her stellar performance, Karmakar narrowly missed out on the bronze medal.

‘I am an adult, I converted and married with my own free will, I love the Hindu faith’: Saba adopts Hinduism and marries Ankur Deval in Agastya Muni Ashram

0

A Muslim girl, Saba, from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has married a Hindu man and reverted to Hinduism. After adopting the Hindu religion, Saba named herself Soni and married her Hindu boyfriend Ankur Deval in Bareilly’s Agastya Muni Ashram as per Hindu rituals on Friday, February 3.

Notably, the girl’s father filed a kidnapping case against Ankur Deval and his family on Wednesday (February 1) after Saba left her residence for the sake of her love. Saba’s father described her as 16 years old in the complaint, although Saba is a 21-year-old adult. He accused Ankur and his family of kidnapping and luring his ‘minor’ daughter, converting her to Hinduism, and marrying Ankur.

Newlywed Saba, in response to her father’s accusations, stated that her interfaith marriage was not forced on her. She stated that she is an adult who has made the decision to marry the person she wants of her own independent volition and she requested that the police not harass Ankur’s friends or family members over phony allegations filed by her family. Saba appealed for police protection for her and her husband claiming a threat to their lives from her family members.

She went on to say that she has immense respect for the Hindu religion because there is no concept of triple talaq in Hinduism. She further said that she loves worshipping Hindu deities. Saba added that she wants to spend the rest of her life with her husband. Saba also implored her family and the police not to bother or harass her in-laws or husband in any way.

How did the Bareilly couple come together?

Ankur Deval, a resident of Bareilly’s Visharatganj police station area, is a garment trader. A Muslim businessman, who also sold clothes in the same market, frequented Ankur’s shop with his daughter Saba. Ankur Deval met Saba approximately 6 years ago and their friendship grew into love. Following that, they decided to marry each other. However, a religious barrier appeared in the midst of love. Saba and Ankur both urged their families to arrange their marriage, but Saba’s father refused.

On Wednesday, February 1, Saba left home to marry Ankur. The duo went to Bareilly’s Agastya Muni Ashram where Saba adopted Hinduism. After that, Acharya Pandit KK Shankhadhar solemnized her marriage with Ankur as per Hindu Vedic rituals and customs. Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sadhvi Prachi, who was also present during the ceremony, blessed the newlywed couple and assured them of protection.

ED questions Rahul Gandhi’s close aide on Saket Gokhale’s claims of receiving Rs 23.5 lakhs from Congress

On Friday, February 3, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s close aide Alankar Sawai. ED questioned Sawai in connection with its money laundering investigation of the financial irregularities of Trinamool Congress leader and ‘RTI activist’ Saket Gokhale while raising funds from a crowdfunding platform.

Reportedly, Rahul Gandhi’s close aide was questioned by ED after Gokhale, in his statement to ED, claimed that he had received Rs 23.54 lakh from Alankar Sawai to manage the Congress party’s social media presence. Alankar Sawai is reportedly heading Rahul Gandhi’s research team.

Over three days earlier this week in Ahmedabad, Sawai was interrogated and also confronted with Gokhale. “We are now confronting him with Gokhale to find out the truth,” an ED officer said.

When questioned about the 23.54 lakh deposited in his bank account in cash over a year, Gokhale told the agency that “this sum was given in cash by Alankar Sawai of the Congress Party for social media work and other consultancies,” the Enforcement Directorate informed an Ahmedabad court on January 25, when Gokhale was in the custody of Gujarat Police.

However, the ED has questioned Gokhale’s assertions as it claimed that Gokhale had received money from Sawai after joining the Trinamool Congress. Gokhale joined the TMC in August 2021, however, the money was deposited in his account in November 2021. Furthermore, according to the ED, Gokhale failed to offer any official documentation proving that he had received the funds from Congress, claiming that their agreement regarding the social media services was only “verbal.”

The Gujarat High Court Thursday this week dismissed the bail application filed by Saket Gokhale in the money laundering case. While dismissing the bail plea, the court observed that prima facie it appears that Gokhale had utilized the funds raised for his personal expenses. Noting that the case is of the nature of fraud and cheating and that the investigation is still going on and that the necessary evidence is to be recovered, the court denied bail to the TMC leader.

On December 29, Gokhale was arrested in Delhi by the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Branch. Gokhale is accused of misappropriating ₹1.07 crore collected from the public through crowd-funding. Saket Gokhale was charged under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 467 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code.

TMC leader Saket Gokhale was arrested by the Gujarat Police in December last year for siphoning off money in the name of activism. The police had found accounts linked to Gokhale where he was receiving money, which he claimed was being used for legal fees for activism-related cases but was instead being used for personal expenses like intra-day trading in the stock market and for treatment of his family members as told by ED to an Ahmedabad court.

Uttar Pradesh: Man accused of selling sugarcane juice adulterated with beef granted bail by Allahabad High Court

0

A man named Fuzail, who is accused of selling sugarcane juice contaminated with beef in the Bareilly region of Uttar Pradesh, was granted bail on Monday by the Allahabad High Court. He was arrested on November 30, 2022, at Prem Nagar police station in the Bareilly district under Sections 323 (causing hurt), 504 (attempt to break public peace), 295-A (outraging religious sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Sections 3, 5, of the UP Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act. The case was registered against him as a result of a complaint made by one of his customers.

Considering the FIR’s claims, the evidence, the accused’s complicity, and the rules established by the supreme court, Justice Deepak Verma’s single-judge bench granted bail to the accused. Despite the state attorney’s opposition, the court decided in Fuzail’s favour.

Court ordered, “without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case and the law laid down by the Apex Court in Satendra Kumar Antil Vs. C.B.I. & Another, S.L.P.(Crl.) No. 5191 of 2021, the Court is of the view that the applicant has made out a case for bail. The bail application is allowed.”

The applicant’s attorney, Hasan Parvez, argued, that he is innocent and has been wrongfully accused in this case for nefarious reasons. He stated that Fuzail was engaged in the business of selling sugarcane juice, and that when a disagreement developed regarding payment, the complainant falsely accused him of selling juice laced with beef and filed an FIR.

Furthermore, he asserted that there was no Chemical Analyst’s Report (Forensic Science Laboratory Report) of the alleged incident, which would have been able to support the prosecution’s version of events. Therefore, no violation of the stated sections is established. Moreover, Fuzail has been incarcerated since November 30, 2022. In addition, the attorney promised the court that if his client is granted bail, he will cooperate with the prosecution and not abuse his freedom.

In light of the foregoing, the Court granted the accused relief upon his provision of a personal bond and two sureties each in the equivalent amount to the satisfaction of the court in question. The court further said that after being released on bail, the accused will not tamper with the prosecution evidence by intimidating/pressurizing the witnesses, he will cooperate in the trial sincerely without seeking any adjournment, and will not indulge in any criminal activity. If he breaches any of these conditions, the bail will be cancelled, the court order stated.

Pakistan-origin Islamic preacher attends religious events, one such in AMU, while visiting India on a tourist visa, complaint filed

Legal activist group Legal Rights Protection Forum has filed a complaint against a foreign Islamic preacher Muhammad Saqib bin Iqbal Shaami alias Saqib Iqbal Shami who visited India on a tourist visa but attended the Islamic religious conferences organised in several cities. He had attended one such event organised by the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh.

The Forum tweeted tagging Home Minister Amit Shah and his office, the High Commission of India in the UK, the DGPs of UP and Telangana and Warangal CP, “Gross violation of Indian Visa provisions by Pakistan-linked UK-based Islamic Preacher Saqib Iqbal Shaami & his intervention into internal matters. Lodged complaint with @AmitShah ji, @HMOIndia @IndiainUK, @cpwarangal1 @TelanganaDGP @dgpup & immigration seeking ban on his entry.”

According to reports, the Pakistani-origin preacher, who is a UK citizen, is touring India on a tourist visa and organizing Islamic religious events in various cities. As a part of his schedule, he will attend a massive religious event in Azam Jahi Mill Grounds, Warangal as a chief guest and principal speaker on 4 February 2023.

On 2 February 2023, he participated in a mass Islamic religious event at Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh. In fact, Saqib bin Iqbal Shaami had taken to Twitter to share glimpses of the event held at AMU, referring to it as the “biggest political, cultural, social & Islamic gathering of all time”.

Notably, the hardline preacher Saqib bin Iqbal Shaami, who has 776 thousand YouTube subscribers, leads an organisation called Kanz Ul Huda, through which he regularly conducts religious sermons and engages in da’wa or Islamic proselytising. In fact, his YouTube channel is littered with videos of him coercing his non-Muslim followers to convert to Islam.

The Forum, in its complaint, noted that Saqib bin Iqbal Shaami is interfering in Indian internal policy matters. “Given the above circumstances and the most serious matter, we humbly request you to take preventive steps to stop his event scheduled in Warangal and take action against him and the sponsors/organisers of the event under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946. We also request you blacklist him to prevent his further entry into India.”, LRPF said in its complaint to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

It is notable that it is illegal for foreigners on tourist visas or any other visa to be involved in preaching in the country. For missionaries, the missionary visa is granted, with the condition that the missionary work does not involve proselytization. According to the Indian visa rules, India does not grant visa to preachers and evangelists who desire to come to India on propaganda campaigns, whether on their own or at the invitation of any organisation in India.

It may be recalled that in the year 2020, the Home Ministry blacklisted and cancelled the tourist visas of 960 foreign Tablighi Jamaat members for violating visa conditions by engaging in missionary activities while in India.

It has also asked the states and union territories where these foreign Tablighi Jamaatis are present, to take necessary legal action against them, for violating the provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946 which might involve their deportation after payment of a $500 penalty, and the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Home minister Amit Shah stated: “960 foreigners have been blacklisted and their Indian visas have also been cancelled after they were found involved in Tablighi activities on tourist visas”.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra lies about SBI’s exposure to Adani Group, deletes tweet on being called out

On Saturday (February 4), Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra stirred the hornet’s nest after she falsely claimed that the State Bank of India (SBI) owed 27% of its loan book to the Adani group.

In a tweet, she claimed, “SBI says Adani group owes it ₹27000 crores – a whopping 27% of its loan book. Finance Secretary says it is a storm in a cup.”

The TMC leader tried to create panic and hysteria among the Indian masses at a time when a malicious Hindenburg Research report targeting Adani Group caused a loss of $100 billion for investors in Adani Group.

Screengrab of the tweet by Mahua Moitra

Opindia also found that the fake claim about SBI owing 27% of its loan book to Adani Group was also published by The Telegraph.

While it is true that the conglomerate has taken loans totalling ₹27000 crores from the Indian public sector banks, the total exposure stands at a mere 0.88% (~0.9%) of the overall loan book and not 27% as claimed by Mahua Moitra or The Telegraph.

SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara has confirmed the development while speaking to the Press Trust of India.

After she was called out on social media, the Trinamool Congress leader quietly deleted her tweet without citing any apology or clarification.

Later, Mahua Moitra posted another tweet after getting rid of the percentage of the exposure of SBI to Adani Group.

“$100bn market cap lost in 4 days. LIC, SBI & PNB with large positions in stock. Indian markets slammed for cancelled FPO. Investors losing faith in SEBI. Some storm, some teacup, Mr Finance Secretary,” Mahua Moitra tweeted making a desperate attempt at face-saving.

On January 24 this year, the US-based investment research firm published a 32,000-word report, accusing the Adani Group of stock manipulation and use of tax havens.

The Adani Group trashed the Hindenburg Research report as a “malicious combination of selective misinformation and stale, baseless and discredited allegations”.

On January 29, the Adani group slammed Hindenburg Research with a 413-page report, dismissing allegations levelled by the latter. The Adani group pointed out how the US-based investment research firm sought to benefit from its report attacking the Indian conglomerate.

“This is rife with conflict of interest and intended only to create a false market in securities to enable Hindenburg, an admitted short seller, to book massive financial gain through wrongful means at the cost of countless investors,” Adani Group emphasised.

‘Actors must be respected, but so should be the sentiments of the masses’: UP CM Yogi Adityanath on ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign

On Friday, February 4, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath spoke about the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and the controversy around it along with the upcoming film city in Uttar Pradesh.

In an exclusive interview with India Today, UP CM discussed Uttar Pradesh’s film city project in Noida and the cancel culture around Bollywood.

When asked by anchor Rahul Kanwal about the progress in the Noida film city project and Bollywood, CM Yogi said, “In regard to the film city project, I recently had a conversation with film actors, directors, and producers in Mumbai. Things are moving in the right direction and you will see a world-class film city developed in UP.”

When asked if there exist two types of Bollywood—one the existing one and the second, the Yogi Adityanath’s Bollywood, the UP CM said, “We are here to unite, not divide, the film city in UP will bring everyone together.”

About the Boycott campaigns faced by actors and Bollywood, Yogi Aditynath said,  “I have always said that artists should be respected but the film directors should also make sure that the sentiments of the people are also respected. Besides, a Talibani culture cannot prevail in a state like UP. UP is UP, it is India’s heart and it will move ahead in its own way.”

Earlier in January, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister was in Mumbai on a two-day visit to discuss shooting and investment prospects in Noida Film City. During an interactive session there actor Suniel Shetty had urged CM Yogi to take the initiative and help Bollywood eradicate the stigma around it. He also asked CM Yogi to speak to Prime Minister Modi about it.

“Today, if I am Suniel Shetty, it is because of UP and the fans from there. This is very likely if you take the initiative. It is important that we remove the stigma that has been placed on us. It’s a very strong feeling for me. It pains me to tell you that we have this stigma but 99% of us are not like that. We don’t do drugs all day, and we don’t do not do wrong work. We are associated with good work. Bollywood music and our stories have connected India with the rest of the world. So, Yogi ji, if you take the initiative and speak with our beloved Prime Minister about it, it will make a significant difference,” Shetty had said.

This comes after boycott campaigns against some film actors and their movies as well as calls for boycotting Bollywood completely have been on the rise. It is worth noting that the BoycottBollywood hashtag first became mainstream following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020, which sparked debate about the industry’s nepotism and the gate-keeping attitude of top production houses. Since then many films have faced the impact of the boycott campaign the worst of which was suffered by Aamir Khan’s ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’.

After threat by Al Qaeda, Ram Janmabhoomi receives phone call threatening to blow it up, case registered

0

A month after the terror organisation Al Qaeda threatened that it will blow up the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and build a Mosque in its place, the Ram Janmabhoomi received a bomb threat on Thursday morning. Now police are on high alert following the threat.

On Thursday morning, a person named Manoj Kumar received a phone call, in which the caller threatened that the Ram Mandir will be blown up with bombs. Manoj Kumar is a resident of the Ramlila Sadan in Ayodhya and is currently a resident in Prayagraj. Manoj said that at around 5 am on Thursday, he received a call from someone claiming to be from Delhi, who told him that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple would be bombed in the next five hours by 10 am.

Manoj Kumar immediately informed the police about the threat, after which the police swung into action. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, the station house officer of Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station, stated that a case has been filed in this regard.

Ayodhya City SP Madhuvan Kumar Singh said that Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station is probing the case. He said that as soon as Manoj Kumar informed the police about the phone call he received, the police station immediately registered a case. He added that police teams have been formed to trace and nab the caller. He assured that the police will arrest the person soon.

Ever since the beginning of the construction of the grand Ram Mandir started in Ayodhya, Islamist terror groups are threatening to blow it up to construct a mosque again on the site. Last month, Al Qaeda in its magazine Ghazwa-e-Hind said that it will one day blow up the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and build a mosque there. They added that this will require the sacrifice of Indian Muslims. The terror group also appealed to Indian Muslims to abandon their country and choose Islamic Jihad.

A plot of this kind incorporating the Ram Mandir is among the malicious goals of banned group Popular Front of India’s (PFI). It intends to restore the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and convert all of India to Islam by the year 2047. For this, PFI had already started utilising Muslims in Ayodhya as its pawns. Mohammad Zaid from the city’s Old Vegetable Market and Mohammad Zaid from Kudha hamlet in Bikapur, were arrested in October of last year. Both were actively involved in deceiving the Muslim youth.

Masood Azhar, the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed, previously issued an audio threat on November 30, 2018, in which he declared that if India built a Ram temple instead of the Babri Masjid, it would bring havoc from Delhi to Kabul. There have many such threats from terrorist groups, to which the security forces have likewise appropriately responded. In 2019, 4 accused involved in the attack on Ram Janmabhoomi on July 5, 2005 were sentenced to death.
