Jharkhand: Suspended IAS officer Pooja Singhal’s properties worth Rs 82.77 crore attached by ED

0

On December 1, 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached suspended IAS officer Pooja Singhal’s properties worth Rs 82.77 crore. According to the ED, the properties comprise two land parcels in Ranchi as well as the super specialty hospital named “Pulse Super Speciality Hospital” and the diagnostics center named “Pulse Diagnostic and Imagining Center.”

Between February 16, 2009 and July 19, 2010, Pooja Singhal served as the deputy commissioner (DC) of Khunti. MGNREGA money was allegedly misappropriated in the Khunti region, along with other shady financial activities, during her stay there.

On the basis of numerous FIRs filed by the Jharkhand Police and the Vigilance Bureau Jharkhand, the ED launched a money laundering probe against Pooja Singhal.

The Khunti district MGNREGA scam in Jharkhand is one of the biggest high-profile scams. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is currently investigating the MGNREGA scam case of Rs 18.8 crore in the Khunti district as well as the irregularities in Chatra worth Rs 6 crore in Jharkhand. Along with this, the ED is probing the illegal allotment of forest land for Palamu’s Kathotia Mines.

The ED gave this information to the Jharkhand High Court while it launched a probe against IAS officer Pooja Singhal who was the District Collector of the respective districts. On April 11, a division bench of Chief Justice Dr. Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad directed the CBI to investigate the scam as well as the role of police officials who kept investigations of the cases pending for the last decade.

On May 6, The Enforcement Directorate arrested Jharkhand mining secretary Pooja Singhal in the money laundering case related to the said embezzlement of MGNREGA funds during public works in the Khunti district of Jharkhand. Singhal, who is a 2000-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer along with her businessman husband Abhishek Jha and others is being probed under charges of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the ED.

Former Shiv Sena MP Pritish Nandy opposes redevelopment of Dharavi slum by Adani group, wants that its ‘spirit is retained and nurtured’

On December 1, Shiv Sena’s former Rajya Sabha MP Pritish Nandy opposed the proposed redevelopment of Dharavi slum in Mumbai, and said that the ‘indomitable spirit’ of Asia’s largest slum should be retained even after it is redeveloped. His remarks came following the reports of Adani Group winning the bid for the redevelopment of Dharavi Slum.

Pritish Nandy called the Dharavi slum a “tribute to the great entrepreneurial spirit” and ‘hoped’ the “indomitable spirit of what has been often described as Asia’s biggest slum is retained and nurtured”. Nandy emphasised that Dharavi is not a “slum”.

In his tweet, Nandy said, “Fact. Gautam Adani has won the bid to redevelop Dharavi. What is crucial however is that the indomitable spirit of what has been often described as Asia’s biggest slum is retained and nurtured. “Dharavi is not actually a slum. It is a tribute to the great entrepreneurial spirit of the weakest and smallest person fighting for his or her livelihood in Mumbai,” he tweeted.

Nandy further called Dharavi a model of collective coexistence.

When asked how he proposes to “retain” the spirit of Dharavi, he said, “Research the architectural grammar, the cultural history that builds integrated and interdependent societies like Dharavi that have survived and flourished over decades and make that the base for the new redevelopment plans. Not just look at the future but also build in the past.”

On giving out more details about his thought process, he said, “Spelling it out will require a multidisciplinary approach, the ability to combine today’s tools of change with Dharavi’s historic cultural assets. Bringing in a visionary architect who can assimilate the past and anticipate the future could be the first step, I imagine.”

It is unclear what spirit he is talking about anyway. It seems Pritish Nandy wants that the residential buildings which will be built for Dharavi residents should retain the characteristics of the slum, but it is not whether it is possible. The redeveloped Dharavi will look like a township of apartment blocks, there will be proper drainage and water connections and other amenities. It will certainly look very different from how it appears now.

A lot of research has been done about the problems faced by the people of Dharavi. Imagine a million people cramped up in on a small piece of land with virtually no access to clean water, sanitisation, decent living condition and more. The majority of the people living in Dharavi are daily wage workers and they often end up with more problems than any benefits in the area.

The drainage system in the slum is always a major concern. Maybe Nandy never visited Dharavi during monsoon. It is hard to imagine anyone living in that area wanting to stay in a slum and oppose any sort of development. However, looking at the history of how such development projects are often opposed, it can be expected that Dharavi development will face a lot of problems in the future especially when Gautam Adani’s name is involved.

Sadly, Nandy is not the only one to doubt the billionaire’s intentions of redevelopment Dharavi. Senior Adviser, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India Kanchan Gupta pointed out that a PTI report has already predicted a storm of foreign-funded NGOs causing trouble in development. He said, “A PTI report predicts coming storm of foreign-funded NGOs protest against the redevelopment of Dharavi: “Local resident Ayyub Sheikh said a large number of foreigners from different countries visit Dharavi as tourists to see from close quarters its ethos and character”.”

According to the report, Dharavi has an “international identity”. A large number of foreigners visit Dharavi as tourists. If what’s written is correct, does that mean India should start promoting a slum as tourist spots? “Ek din guzaro Dharavi mein”?

The report quoted one Paul Raphel, who runs Dharavi Nagrik Seva Sangh. He said, “We are not happy as the land that houses Asia’s biggest slum is being handed over to Adani Group. There are thousands of huts in Dharavi and four to five families reside in each hut. But after redevelopment, they will get only one flat, which may not be sufficient for them.” So this activist says that currently 4-5 families live in one hut, but after they get a flat, it will not be sufficient for them.

Who is Paul Raphel? He is an activist from Mumbai and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. In July this year, AAP on its official Facebook page for Mumbai’s chapter published a post announcing over 20 women joined the party in presence of Paul and another leader from Dharavi Shaheen Shaikh.

A Twitter user claimed Dharavi has been sold to Adani by PM Modi. He said, “Modiji has sold the whole of #dharavi to his sponsor #Adani. Don’t think any other “sponsored” has given such returns to their sponsor. In that way, every paisa spent by Adani on Modi is paisa a hundred times vasool.”

Another Twitter user Anurag Chivilkar claimed Mumbai Airport is also owned by Adani while Adani Group only manages the airport and does not own it. He said, “Already the  Mumbai Airport is owned by Adani, now they have won tender for Dharavi redevelopment which is the adjoining area to the airport… next you will hear they declare this area as a new district in Maharashtra.”

Congress leader Amir Shaikh claimed that soon all the houses will be sold to Adani. He said, “The day isn’t far when Narendra Modi will sell our homes to Gautam Adani.”

Another Congress leader Varsha Eknath Gaikwad raised doubts about the project. She hinted that the project will be opposed by the locals by giving an example of the protests being faced by Adani’s Vizhinjam port in Kerala. It is notable that a nexus of the Church is behind the protests in Kerala. She also raised doubts about the bidding process.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Preeti Sharma Menon said, “Get ready for Mumbai’s biggest scam yet. The poor of Dharavi will be rendered homeless, their livelihoods snatched, and their land grabbed to make #BloodFlats for the rich. And Adani and Fadnavis will get richer. #DharaviScam.”

Adani bagged the Dharavi redevelopment project

On November 29, Adani Group bagged the redevelopment project of Dharavi. The group had bid Rs 5,069 crores for the project which was almost double the amount bid by DLF Group. In the initial redevelopment project of Asia’s largest slum, 259 hectares of land will be covered.

TMC’s Saket Gokhale spreads fake report claiming ₹30 crore was spent on PM’s Morbi visit citing ‘RTI response’ that does not exist

Former ‘RTI activist’ and current Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale has been caught sharing a fabricated news report about an RTI query and its response that does not exist. He had claimed that ₹30 crore was spent on PM Modi’s Morbi visit, sharing a news clipping from an unnamed Gujarati newspaper, which was claimed to be Gujarat Samachar. But BJP has said that it is fabricated and no such report was published and there is no such RTI reply, and Gujarat Samachar has also said that they have not published such a report.

On December 1, 2022, TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale claimed that ₹30 crore were spent on arrangements for PM Modi’s visit to Morbi in Gujarat after the bridge collapse tragedy. Gokhale posted a clipping of a Gujarati newspaper on Twitter which claimed that an RTI reply has said that ₹30 crore was spent for the visit of the PM to Morbi for just few hours.

Citing the so-called report, Gokhale claimed that ₹ 5.5 crore was purely for “welcome, event management, & photography”. He also claimed that “Modi’s event management & PR costs more than life of 135 people”, as the families of the 135 victims of the tragedy were given ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each, totalling ₹5 crore.

Saket Gokhale was not alone to post this news, before him a Twitter user named Dax Patel had posted the same clipping yesterday. The alleged news report said that this was revealed by Morbi district collector’s office on an RTI query by one Deepak Patel. Giving the break-up of the alleged expense, the report claimed that ₹8 crore was spent on hospital’s painting, cleaning, new beds and water cooler, ₹11 crore for new roads, ₹3 crore for PM Modi’s welcome, ₹2.5 crore for the PM’s security, ₹2 crore for event management and ₹50 lakh for photography.

Many other Twitter users subsequently shared the clipping from their own accounts making the same claim.

However, BJP Gujarat has said that this is fake news, and no such RTI was filed and no such reply to any RTI was given. BJP Gujarat also posted on Twitter that the new clipping is fabricated, and actually no such report was published anywhere.

“TMC is a party of liars. It starts from @MamataOfficial   to lowly spokespersons like you,” Gujarat BJP said, tagging TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

West Bengal BJP also said the same thing, saying that Gokhale is spreading fake news and there is no such report and no such RTI reply.

Several other social media users also expressed doubt about the clipping and said that it is fake.

Notably, no such Gujarati report could be found while searching online. However, many regional newspapers do not have an online presence, and some only publish images of their printed papers as epapers, which means they can’t be searched. But the Gujarati news clipping that Gokhale shared does not bear the name of the newspaper and the date of the report, making it difficult to locate the ‘report’ and verify it.

However, Dax Patel, who had originally posted the clipping, claimed that it is from Gujarat Samachar. Replying to a Twitter user asking for the name of the newspaper and the link to the report, Dax Patel replied by saying just ‘Gujarat samachar’, without any link.

As no such link was given, OpIndia tried to locate the news report on the Gujarat Samachar website, but could not find it. We went through the epaper versions of Gujarat Samachar for the entire last week, but no such report was spotted in the newspaper.

After that, OpIndia team talked with the web department of Gujarat Samachar to know if the clipping is indeed from their newspaper. They categorically said that no such report has been published by them. They said that although the clipping looks like Gujarat Samachar, they did not publish it.

It is notable that while the font and layout of the clipping are similar to Gujarat Samachar, the format of the ‘report’ does not match with actual reports. Gujarat Samachar always prints the date or day, the name of the city and the source of the report at the beginning of the report, and these are absent from the clipping.

OpIndia team also talked to some residents of Morbi to inquire about the ‘RTI activist Deepak Patel’ mentioned in the so-called report, but nobody has heard of such a person.

Therefore, the claim of the BJP that this is a fabricated report seems to be true. As no such report of any RTI response was found, the news clipping seems to be fake and fabricated made to look like Gujarat Samachar, and people from Gujarat Samachar said that it was not printed by their paper.

OpIndia has contacted Morbi Collectors office and the Information department of the Gujarat department seeking more information about the matter and whether such an RTI reply was issued, and the report will be updated once responses are received.

Update: PIB fact check calls it fake

Later, PIB Fact Check posted a tweet saying that the claim made by Saket Gokhale is fake.

PIB Fact Check posted a tweet saying that the claim that ₹30 crore was spent on PM Modi’s visit to Morbi is fake. They also added that no such RTI response has been given. This assertion by PIB Fact Check makes it clear that the ‘news clipping’ is also fake, and it was fabricated to defame PM Modi and BJP ahead of the Gujarat elections.

Controversial Israeli director Nadav Lapid accepts facts are on Vivek Agnihotri’s side, but refuses to take back his comments on ‘The Kashmir Files’

0

Following the comments about The Kashmir Files film by the controversial Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, the film’s director Vivek Agnihotri had thrown a challenge to the IFFI jury head. Agnihotri had said that he would leave filmmaking if Lapid can highlight any instance in his film that is not true.

Responding to Vivek Agnihotri’s challenge over his remarks calling the film ‘vulgar’ and ‘propaganda’, Lapid said, “I’m sure that the director is furious. I would be furious too if someone would talk about my film the same way. The filmmaker knows very well that the question is not what exactly were the facts. None of us (in the jury), especially myself, ever doubted the facts. I don’t have any capacity, the tools to say what happened in Kashmir.”

However, despite saying that he doesn’t know anything about the facts of Kashmir, and that the film may have presented the facts correctly, Lapid went on to say that he still considers the film to be vulgar propaganda and he will repeat the same comments again and again.

“Whatever I said and I said clearly that for me and my fellow jury members, it was and it is a vulgar propaganda movie that didn’t have a place and was inappropriate for such a prestigious competitive section. I can repeat it again and again”, the controversial filmmaker from Israel said.

Going further to call The Kashmir Files a bad film as well, Lapid said, “Making bad films is not a crime, but this is a very crude, manipulative, and violent propaganda film. The truth is that I also couldn’t help but imagine a similar situation that might happen one day soon in Israel, and I would be happy that in such a situation, the head of a foreign jury would be willing to say things as he sees them.”

Trying to temper his stinging remarks criticising The Kashmir Files, Nadav Lapid issued a cursory apology to the victims of the genocide in Kashmir. Lapid said that he doesn’t want to hurt the sufferers of the violence and their relatives, even as he goes on to call the film about their genocide part of vulgar propaganda.

Meanwhile, Sudipto Sen, one of the members of the IFFI jury issued a statement saying that the remarks expressed by Lapid were his personal opinion, and not of the jury. “In the official presentation of the Jury Board to the Festival Director and in the official Press Conference, where we 4 jurors (the fifth juror had to leave for her emergency) were present and interacted with the press, we never mentioned anything about our likes or dislikes. We don’t indulge in any kind of political comments on any film and if it is done, it is completely in a personal capacity – nothing to do with the esteemed Jury Board,” he said.

The film ‘The Kashmir Files’ takes the viewers back to 1989, when due to rising Islamic Jihad, a large number of Kashmiri Hindus were forced to flee the valley. According to estimates, roughly 100,000 of the valley’s total 140,000 Kashmiri Pandit inhabitants migrated between February and March 1990. More of them fled in the years that followed until just about 3,000 families remained in the valley by 2011.

The movie which released on March 11 this year, proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Though the film was praised all over the world, a section of Indian opposition parties and leftists tried to run down the film or discredit the story shown within. While some directly called the film a pack of lies, others tried to target the BJP over the issue. Multiple theories were also peddled to discredit the film and its makers, but the public verdict muted all the criticism.

The Kashmir Files starring Darshan Pathak, Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi in the lead roles earned around Rs 337.23 crore, making it the first Hindi film to cross the Rs 300 crore club during the coronavirus pandemic.

After campaigning for AAP, Communists and begging before Mamata Banerjee to save India’s democracy, Swara Bhasker now ‘walks’ with Rahul Gandhi

Bollywood entertainer Swara Bhasker is known for two things, not for acting skills, but for being “ashamed as a Hindu” and begging before anti-Modi politicians to ‘save democracy.’ This time she has joined the Congress party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and walked with Rahul Gandhi to resist ‘hate’.

Known for her anti-BJP rants, Swara Bhasker lauded Rahul Gandhi and wrote on Twitter, “Joined @bharatjodo yatra today & walked with @RahulGandhi. The energy, commitment & love is inspiring! The participation & warmth of common people, the enthusiasm of Congress workers & RG’s attention & care toward everyone & everything around him is astounding!

In another tweet, Swara Bhasker described the Bharat Jodo Yatra as radical imagination and expression of resistance to hate. “At a time when hate is normal & the dominant logic is that ‘no low is too low as long as the election is won’.. when society is so brutalized that we barely blink at heinous crimes, @bharatjodo yatra is a radical new imagination & expression of how we can resist hate.”

Swara Bhasker has time and again showered praises on Rahul Gandhi, for reasons best known to her. In October, she tweeted, “Credit where due…Despite electoral defeats, trolling, personal attacks, and constant critique about being ineffective, Rahul Gandhi has neither succumbed to communal rhetoric nor sensationalist politics. Given the situation of this country, an effort like Bharat Jodo is commendable.”

Exactly a year ago in 2021, During an interactive session with Mamata Banerjee that was conducted at the Y.B. Chavan Centre in Nariman Point in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Swara Bhasker appealed to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to ‘protect’ the democratic principles of the country. She then introduced her to Hinduphobic comedians like Munawar Faruqi, Agrima Joshua and entertainer Richa Chadha.

Bhaskar claimed that those fighting to preserve the “idea of India” are caught between two opposing forces: a mob of “unaccountable” people and the State, which employs measures to limit freedom. “There is a state that is handing out UAPA and sedition charges as prasad from a God we don’t want to pray to,” she claimed.

Interestingly, she had named other ‘struggling’ actors, and rejected comedians and tried to make it sound as if their professional failures and unsuccessful careers are the faults of the BJP government at the centre.

Irony died a thousand deaths after Swara appealed to Mamata Banerjee, a person who jailed people for sharing memes and unleashing wrath on those who opposed her ideologically or voted against her in the last state assembly elections.

The persecution of dissenters and opposition workers has only increased since Mamata Banerjee’s party retained power in the state despite a surprisingly strong fight from the BJP. In a large number of such incidents, the victims were BJP supporters and workers, while the accused were said to be TMC supporters. More than a dozen BJP workers were killed in the post-election violence that erupted following the TMC party’s victory in the assembly elections.

It was the same Mamata Banerjee whose government had hounded Ambikesh Mahapatra for years, a Jadavpur University professor who had shared a cartoon of Mamata Banerjee. The same Mamata who had jailed Priyanka Sharma, for sharing a meme that was neither offensive nor abusive. The same Mamata, whose party is behind the worst political violence in recent years.

In 2019, the Bollywood entertainer known for her flops like Rasbhari and Jahan Chaar Yaar, campaigned for AAP leaders like Raghav Chadha, and Atishi Marlena, before that she had extended her support to the then Communist Party leader Kanhaiya Kumar and also campaigned for Congress leader Digvijay Singh.

Swara Bhasker who every day wakes up only to blame BJP for doing divisive politics had then dismissed the Aam Aadmi Party’s divisive identity politics as an “unfortunate truth”. Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia had back then called Atishi Marlena a ‘Rajputani’ warning BJP and Congress to beware of her.

She defended the AAP’s divisive politics by pointing out that the country is so large and diverse that caste and religion inevitably take centre stage.

During the Kathua rape case, Bhaskar strongly led the placard campaign denigrating Hinduism. The Kathua rape and murder case had gained national attention, with the placard gang and media hastily concluding that an innocent girl had been raped and murdered. The same gang had chosen to remain silent in a number of other cases where the perpetrators were Muslims.

Swara Bhasker, who claims to be a staunch feminist, had no problem in campaigning for Congress leader Digvijay Singh, who insulted women through his lewd remarks. He also made an inherently misogynistic remark against his opponent and BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya that she is a ‘mute doll’ for RSS. Singh, who was seen scampering behind Sadhus during campaigning to solicit Hindu votes was the one who was in a hurry to link Hindus with the Mumbai 26/11 terror attack. Digvijaya Singh, another motormouth in Congress, had once passed an obscene remark ‘Sau Taka Tench Maal‘ on one of his own party MPs Meenakshi Natarajan.

Bhaskar, who thrives on the idea of feminism, however, had no problem in supporting a candidate who has insulted women through his lewd remarks.

Bhaskar is known more for a short video clip of her dancing enthusiastically to attract Salman Khan’s attention, than for any of her movies.

‘It is not Kharge’s fault, he was ordered to call me Raavan in the land of Ram Bhakts’, says Narendra Modi

0

On Thursday, December 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting in Kalol ahead of the second phase of polling in Gujarat. During his speech, PM Modi attacked Congress fiercely and hit back at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for his ‘Raavan’ remark and said that it is not Kharge’s fault. The PM said that Kharge was ‘ordered’ to call him Raavan in the land of Ram Bhakts.

PM Modi said, “There is a competition in Congress about who can abuse me more. I respect Kharge Ji, he will say what he will be ordered to say. The Congress party does not know that this is the Gujarat of Ram bhakts. On this land of Ram bhakts, Kharge Ji was ordered to call me Raavan with 100 heads and he did so.”

Narendra Modi further added, “Those who never believed in the existence of Lord Rama have now brought ‘Raavan’ from Ramayana and, I am surprised, he never repented, forget apologizing after using such expletives for me.”

Talking in detail about the development projects by the BJP government, PM Modi said in his speech in Kalol, “When you sent me to Delhi in 2014, there were two mobile phone manufacturing factories in the country. Today there are more than 200. If you are getting real benefits from the development, why shouldn’t you press the lotus button in the polls? I am the son of Gujarat, the qualities you have given me, the strength that Gujarat has given me is troubling these Congressmen.”

Narendra Modi also said, “Congress leaders should listen with open ears, your faith and distrust in democracy is your problem. If you want to live for a particular family, then it is your choice. But note this, the more mud you throw, the more the lotus will bloom.”

It is notable that Mallikarjun Kharge while addressing a rally in the Behrampura area of Ahmedabad city on Monday night, had said, “The Prime Minister asks people to vote by looking at his face in all elections. Is he a Raavan with 100 heads?”

Maharashtra: Arshad Malik poses as Harshad to marry a Hindu woman, gets his father to rape, assault her for years, threatens to cut into 70 pieces

A novel case of Love Jihad has been reported from Deopur village of Maharashtra’s Dhule district. On Thursday, the Dhule Police registered an FIR against Arshad Malik and his father Salim Malik for trapping a Hindu woman (24) in a relationship under a false name and sexually assaulting her for around two years. The police have booked the accused under sections 376(2)(n), 377, 327, 504, 506, 34, and 323 of the Indian Penal Code and have launched an investigation into the case.

The complaint was filed by the victim woman on December 1, 2022, a copy of which has been obtained by OpIndia. The woman in the complaint said that the accused Arshad Malik had introduced himself as a Hindu person named Harshad Mali and then persuaded her to get married to him. The complaint read that the victim woman was also raped by Arshad’s father, Salim Malik who is named as the second accused in the case.

Copy of FIR obtained by OpIndia

According to the complaint, the accused have been harassing the woman and raping her since January 1, 2021. The saga began in the year 2016 when the victim woman first got married to Gaurav in the year 2016. The duo also had a child together but the circumstances for the woman happened to change after her husband died in a road accident in 2019.

Her deceased husband had sold their house already and left the woman with just Rs 2.5 lakhs. The woman then decided to study for a government job and so she joined Maharashtra Police Bharti classes at Khandesh Academy in the year 2020. There she met prime accused Arshad Malik who introduced himself as a Hindu named Harshad Mali. The duo became friends and exchanged phone numbers. They began chatting and talking over the phone while they also met each other daily at the academy.

The victim woman in the complaint added that the accused one day took her on his bike to the nearby jungle and raped her. “He forced himself upon me. I kept on refusing, opposing but he sexually assaulted me. He also video graphed the incident and used the tape to blackmail me later,” the woman said in the FIR filed on December 1.

Accused named in the FIR

“After that incident, I stopped talking to him. But he blackmailed me saying that he would distribute the video to the public if I stopped talking to him. He later confessed that he was in love with me and that he wanted us to stay together. He also said that he was ready to get married to me but then he proposed for a live-in relationship. I was scared that he would blackmail me again so I agreed to a live-in relationship,” she added.

The 24-year-old complainant said that it is during their live-in stay on July 2, 2021, that she discovered that Harshad was a Muslim man and that his original name was Arshad Malik. “On asking about his identity, he shut me up saying that these things hardly mattered in love and relationships. I thought he was madly in love with me so I trusted him. Later we shifted to Amalner and Ulhasnagar cities of the state. I also had my son named Vivek from the first marriage with me,” she narrated.

The woman said that she gave Arshad Rs 2.5 lakhs that she had attained from the will of her first husband. She also mentioned in the complaint that Arshad had demanded the gold chain which her deceased husband had gifted to her. “I refused to give the ornament to him which enraged him. He then hit me and also gave me motorbike silencer burn wounds on my hand. He snatched the chain and informed his parents in Dhule about me and my son,” the complaint read.

The victim woman and the prime accused happened to stay in Ulhasnagar city for around 4 months in a rented apartment. However, later Arshad’s father arrived at the residence and brutally raped the woman with permission of Arshad, as per the woman’s complaint. “Arshad and his father raped me for several days. I got pregnant. Later they took me to their home in Dhule and got me married to Arshad according to the Islamic rituals. After the wedding his father kept on sexually assaulting me several times despite knowing that I was pregnant with a child,” the victim stated.

Complaint registered by the victim woman. FIR copy has been obtained by OpIndia

According to the complaint, the woman was given a new Islamic name and was forcefully converted to Islam. The family members of Arshad including his mother Taslim and sister Arsheen also began pressuring the woman to perform ‘khatna’ (circumcision) on her small son named Vivek. On refusing the family members physically assaulted her amid her pregnancy. The woman then sent her son Vivek to his grandmother’s home in Dhule.

Adding the dreadful details to the case, the complainant said, “I gave birth to my second child in August this year. But I was not getting proper healthcare. Instead, my father-in-law and my husband continued to rape me together. My mother-in-law also tortured me mentally.” She said that after the Shraddha Walkar murder case happened, Arshad and his father would issue her threats saying that “Aftab cut Shraddha into 35 pieces but we would cut you into 70 pieces.”

The woman somehow managed to flee from Arshad’s home after she was issued death threats by both the accused on November 29. She reached out to her earlier mother-in-law (deceased husband Gaurav’s mother) and sought help. Meanwhile, she and her family member continued to get death threats from Arshad and his family including his father Salim and mother Taslim.

The woman reached the Deopur Police station on December 1 and lodged a police complaint against Arshad and his father Salim. The police have booked the accused under sections 376(2)(n), 377, 327, 504, 506, 34 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code and have launched an investigation in the case.

Earlier a similar case of love jihad was reported from Shrirampur area of Maharashtra, where Aman Sheikh (24) who posed himself as Amrut Ram Khairnar had lured a 17-year-old Dalit girl and abducted her from Shirdi where she had gone with her family to visit the Sai Baba temple. The accused also had forged documents, including Aadhaar Card, to convince the victim girl that he was a Hindu, reports said.

Also on November 12, a minor tribal girl was abducted by a person named Imran Sheikh from Malegaon, Nashik. The girl had disappeared from her home while she was alone. The family of the girl and several Adivasi and Hindu organisations then alleged that the police were not taking the case seriously as the victim girl belonged to the tribal community.

Know which party was termed as AIDS of Indian politics by Kumar Vishwas

A video clipping of former AAP leader and Hindi poet Kumar Vishwas is making rounds on the internet, where he is seen commenting on various political parties while taking a jibe at his former party. In this video, which is a clip from a program on News 18 Hindi from October 2022, Kumar Vishwas is seen comparing various Indian political parties with different diseases. The former AAP leader said that while BJP is like Diabetes and Congress is like Cancer, some parties are like AIDS, which has no cure, so it is best to avoid it. While he didn’t name any party for AIDS, it was clear that he was talking about AAP.

Kumar Vishwas was invited for an interview on the TV news channel News Nation. Anchor Amish Devgan hosted this interview. In the viral video clipping of this interview, Amish Devgan asked Kumar Vishwas if he will go back to the Aam Aadmi Party if Arvind Kejriwal agrees to make him a deputy chief minister. Answering this, Kumar Vishwas said, “There are two cases. One is you you don’t know about the things. The other is you know the confirmed things. So, the thing you are asking was not known earlier, but it is confirmed now.”

Amish Devgan asked what is confirmed. Kumar Vishwas answered, “It is now confirmed that there are many diseases and disorders in Indian politics. For example, the Bharatiya Janata Party is just like diabetes. They work well and be healthy if you make them toil hard, make them run here and there, and make them sweat. Doesn’t a doctor advise you to run and sweat if you have diabetes?”

Kumar Vishwas added, “The Congress is the origin of all the malpractices seen in Indian politics. It is just like cancer. You cut it, treat it, and transplant it. Then you get over it.”

Without naming AAP, Kumar Vishwas took a jibe at his former organization as he said, “Some parties in Indian politics are just like AIDS. There is no cure for it. Prevention from them is the only cure we have. So better to save ourselves from such people. We say sorry to them with folded hands and say that we won’t repeat this thing again.” However, it is clear that he was talking about AAP, as his response came to a question about Arvind Kejriwal.

Amish Devgan asked Kumar Vishwas, “What do you think why did he (Arvind Kejriwal) change in this way? He also comes from a humble background just like you do.” Replying to this, Kumar Vishwas said, “Look, I nowadays do a program based on the life and works of Bhagwan Shri Ram. When I already have such a big topic, why should I waste my time talking about such inferior topics?”

It is notable that Kumar Vishwas recently received a death threat from a supporter of Arvind Kejriwal for his comments against the Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and praising Lord Ram. A police complaint was also filed in this regard and the culprit was arrested from Indore.

If art tells a story and does not do propaganda on behalf of victims, it loses its purpose: What Nadav Lapid needs to learn

Propaganda – The word owes its origin to an entity called The Sacred Congregation for Propagation of the Faith (Congregation for Propagation of the Faith). This entity was established in 1622. The term became political for the first time Georgi Plekhanov proposed it a as valid tool for Marxist agitation in his work Our Differences in 1885. Lenin in 1902, in his essay What is to be Done, justifies Propaganda as a tool complementary to agitation writing We must without fail devote serious attention to propaganda and agitation… as a key tool to the Communist revolution. This idea of disinformation became sinister when Hitler’s  Nationalist Socialist German Worker’s Party or Nazis used disinformation to further their political agenda causing unprecedented cruelty to the Jewish citizens of Germany, with a structured campaign carried out by creating a Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.

Merriam-Webster gives three definitions to it, first is the historical reference of religious connotation mentioned above, and second is the spreading of ideas, information or rumour for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution a cause or a person. It also alternately defines it as ideas, facts or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause. Cambridge Dictionary defines it as Information, ideas, opinion or images, often only to give one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with an intention of influencing people’s opinion.

Now as we see, propaganda can be used to lie and support the perpetrator of the Oppression as in the case of Nazi Germans creating a narrative that the subjugation of the Jews was not only desirable, rather was necessary. On the positive side, using art to oppose such brutal oppression by magnifying the atrocities of the Nazis, could also, in the most honest definition be termed as Propaganda. The cause shall define whether the propaganda is noble or not. Any art which sides with the oppressed and tries to build an opinion in support of the oppressed, the brutalised and the wronged ones, by definition is still propaganda but a positive one.

When Nadav Lapid, the pro-Palestine and anti-Israel film-maker invited as a guest at the International Film Festival of India organised by the Government of India, called Vivek Agnihotri’s telling of the true and factual story of brutal violence in Kashmir in the 90s aimed at wiping out the Hindu population from the Valley to make it an Islamic State, a Propaganda, from all indications, he did not mean it positive propaganda meant to propagate the truth. In the aftermath of the outrage at the insensitive and somewhat out-of-place dressing down of The Kashmir File, the man at the centre of the whole controversy, Nadav Lapid came to one of the TV channels and stood his ground and left no scope for any benefit of the doubt, insisted foolishly that his calling the Film propaganda was in a negative sense. Now, this should imply two things, one, what the Film depicted is based upon lies, and two, that it is meant to injure a cause.

Well, if one has seen the movie, it stitches the narrative around the mass killings of Hindus by Muslim fanatics in Kashmir with the express objective of carving out an Islamic State out of Hindu-majority secular India with the support of the Islamic State of Pakistan; its story is woven across few critical events. These events shown in the movie through which the story moves are the killing of an Engineer in Telecom Department BK Ganjoo in March 1990, the killing of High Court Judge Neelkanth Ganjoo, the Murder of IAF officers, the brutal killing of Girija Tikku and the Nadimarg Massacre of 2003. One key feature of negative propaganda is that it is based on lies.

Now let us look at all of these incidents in isolation. Was BK Ganjoo killed in 1990? Yes, The Hindu, a known anti-Hindu newspaper carried a report which also speaks of his wife, Mrs Vijaya Ganjoo, now living in Delhi, having been driven out of Kashmir, the land of their ancestors by the Terrorists (see the Link, somehow having an unrelated picture from Gujarat in a Kashmir story). The killing is a story of worst betrayal and brutality where allegedly the terrorists made the grieving wife of a slain man eat rice soaked in the blood of the victim. The second story is about the killing of Judge Neelkanth Ganjoo. He was murdered in broad daylight. It was alleged that he was murdered to avenge the sentencing of terror accused Maqbul Bhatt.

As the victim was a High Court Judge, his assassination is a matter of public record and the story cannot be made up. The third incident in the movie is the gruesome rape and murder of Hindu woman Girija Tickoo. She was raped and murdered by cutting in the woodcutting sawing machine on June 4th 1990, while she was still alive. This was also reported in the newspaper and a factual real incident.  Another incident which is shown in the movie across which the story moves is the Nadimarg Massacre of 24 Hindus including the infants (NewYorkTime Article is linked). As for the mass-scale exodus of Hindus from Kashmir, the visible proof of that is the Kashmiri Refugee camps in Delhi.

Now we have established that there is enough documented proof of all the incidents built as a story around one single family, we know that this is not misinformation or a lie for which it can be termed as propaganda. That leaves the second part of the definition of Propaganda, which is damaging the cause. The only cause this is harmed here is that of the fanatics, who wanted to establish an Islamic state on the lines of the one made in Syria infamous for bloodshed and women and child slaves. The clause that it supports is that of the Hindu victims who were threatened to leave the valley by the announcement made from the Mosques. Now, if a threat is released from places of worship, then how is it not an act of religious terror is hard to believe and to support it is only supporting the cause of religious terror.

If Art tells a story and does not do propaganda on behalf of victims and oppressed, then it loses its purpose. Any art and positive propaganda associated with a German story from the world war needs to side with the Jews, not the Germans. That it moves the opinion of the masses could be one reason for calling it Propaganda. But then is that not the purpose of Art, to move people’s opinion – in favour of peace, in support of love, in defiance of oppression and terror? Why would create a word of Art at all if it leaves no impression on people, changes no opinion, or creates no ideas to improve a world ridden with violence and pain?

Another charge that Nadav Lapid makes is that the movie is vulgar. The term Vulgar comes from Latin Vulgaris, which is derived from Vulgus, meaning Common Folks. Although some amount of snobbishness is visible from the way Nadav lists out how he has been on the jury of many prestigious Film Festivals, still, why attack a movie merely because it caters to the sensibilities of common folks? The Kashmir Files is about the minorities of Kashmir facing Muslim majoritarianism. It is a movie about the pain that fell upon the common people- the telecom Engineer BK Ganjoo, the Librarian Girija Tickoo, the poor villagers of Nadimarg, common people abandoned by the state in front of the fanatics. The movie does not claim to be clever or crafty. It merely claims to be truthful and supports the cause of the victims. It does not tell the story of both sides. In this story, there is only one side. Just as the story of the Holocaust does not speak about the unjust treaty of the first World war which broke the back of German pride.

In Nazi Germany, it was the Jews who were the victims, not the Germans. A movie is not a mathematical equation where two sides have to be equal. Art is always a creation of the opinionated, just as Nadav has a very poor opinion of his own homeland which he believes has something rotten. This movie evokes very naked emotions towards violence in human mind, vulgar emotions, if I may say. There is nothing lofty or philosophical about the deaths depicted by Vivek in the movie. The acts of violence are deeply depressing and often disgusting. They do not leave the audience as angry as they leave her sad. Many half-educated men have jumped into it, once again attacking the movie and claiming it will create Islamophobia. Phobia by definition is fear, not hatred, and it is a nature-given defence mechanism.

It rises when one finds violence and terror, not because someone wants one to be fearful. The way to stop Islamophobia is not to threaten people to desist from being Islamophobes, but rather stop threatening people and to stop creating absolute terror of the faith. It is for the followers of the faith to stop being intolerant and violent. To demand that a film built on factual incidents of violence in Kashmir should be pleasant and not vulgar is insane and insensitive at the same time. This demand of Nadav is in reality fascism in art. As Susan Sontag wrote in her 1974 Essay, Fascinating Fascism- Fascist Art glorifies surrender, it exalts mindlessness, it glamorises death. This is what the Kashmir Files does not do. It presents death in its mournful sadness and painful ugliness. Maybe the reason why a practitioner of fascist art, Nadav, himself hated the movie is not that it is not truthful, but because it is too real. As Susan Sontag writes in the same essay quoted above that Fascist art scorns realism in the name of idealism.

When cornered, Nadav Lapid concedes that whether a work of Art is propaganda and vulgar or not- is a subjective decision and may vary from person to person but fails to explain why then he took to a public platform to denigrate a movie. There were Fifteen movies in the run. Out of them Costa Rican film I have Electric Dreams has been chosen by the jury. Nadav claims now that his criticism of the movie had nothing to do with the politics around it. But then he did not comment on art, nor did he utter one word about any of the other movies which did not make it to the winner’s place. Obviously, they were not unto the mark on one count or another, as far as the art of Film-making is concerned. If he had not made the highly political statement, picking and lampooning one movie, it would have passed without any notice. A seasoned man of many platforms like Nadav must have known that and made the statement for a purpose.

While Nadav has not commented on any lobby at play here, much like Jack Dorsey’s infamous ‘Smash Brahminical Patriarchy’ moment, those who are hell-bent on defending him, mostly those leaning towards left and Congress, bring forth another lame argument. They claim that Vivek Agnihotri has made money out of The Kashmir Files. Which other movie maker has claimed that they made the movie not for making money but because their movie carried a higher purpose. The second leg of their argument is that the Movie is supported by the ruling Narendra Modi Government. Both of these two are such lame arguments. When they claim BJP supported the movie depicting the horrors of Hindus left alone in a Muslim-majority state by an apathetic state, they imply that the opposition opposes the movie for the same reason.

Also, there is no evidence of the claim that the movie was promoted by the ruling BJP, in any material terms. On the other hand, the movie Gandhi made by a British filmmaker was funded with seven million dollars of Indian taxpayers’ money. The movie earned around 127 Million Dollars Worldwide. This is how a commercial private venture of a foreign production house was funded by the Government of India. Nadav has himself made a few movies. His own body of work mostly includes short films and documentaries. The fact that he abused the privilege given by the Government of India as a guest and Chief of Jury in an Indian event and that he was invited in the first place, both are problematic. As for the makers of the Kashmir Files, more power to Vivek Agnihotri and his team.
