Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton admits to planning attempted foreign coups

John Bolton, who served as the national security adviser under the Trump administration confessed to helping plan coups in foreign countries.

During an appearance on CNN, John Bolton said that he has helped plan coups in other countries while contending that former President Trump’s actions leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, the Capitol attack did not amount to a coup attempt.

“As somebody who has helped plan coups d’etat, not here, but you know, other places, it takes a lot of work,” Bolton said.

However, Bolton, who served as the national security adviser to Trump from 2018 to 2019, did not elaborate on the countries he helped to plan coups while in office. When Tapper pressed him for clarification over comments about having a planned coup, Bolton referred to the failed 2019 Venezuelan coup attempt against President Nicolás Maduro, though he added that the U.S. government did not have “much to do with” it.

Bolton said he disagreed with the notion that Donald Trump attempted a coup, which, he said, required cunning and elaborate planning.

“That’s not the way Donald Trump does things. It’s rambling from one … idea to another, one plan that falls through, and another comes up,” Bolton added.

Speaking to CNN’s Jack Tappers, Bolton described Trump’s actions to overturn the election results as indefensible but added that the former president was a “disturbance in the force” rather than a leader of an “attack on our democracy.”

He asserted that Trump did “unleash” the rioters on the Capitol, but it was not to subvert the Constitution and instead was to give himself more time to challenge the results in state legislatures.

Bolton, an unrepentant hawk, had served in various capacities in many Republican administrations, starting with Ronald Reagan’s in the 1980s. He was appointed as the US ambassador to the United Nations under former President George W. Bush and was among the most passionate proponents of the US invasion of Iraq. Bolton had also extended his support for bombing Iran and North Korea, an approach that put him at odds with Trump, who sacked him in 2019.

Telford sexual exploitation case: Inquiry finds over 1,000 children were groomed by Muslim gangs and authorities looked away due to ‘racial unease’

On July 12, an independent inquiry into Telford sexual exploitation case revealed how authorities looked away in the matter where over 1,000 children were groomed by Muslim gangs just because of racial unease. The report found that the key agencies investigating the matter dismissed child exploitation as “child prostitution.” They blamed the children for the situation and not the perpetrators.

The independent chair that investigated the case submitted the report on July 12, in which they concluded that the investigating agencies were nervous about the race of the accused and did not investigate the case properly. They added that the youth workers and teachers were discouraged from reporting the offences and exploitation of children. The steps taken by the authorities to ignore the matter resulted in the exploitation of the children for years.

As per reports, there had been a widespread grooming nexus in the town since 1989. The independent chair found that the men would approach girls while being disguised as taxi drivers or food delivery drivers. Then they would pursue them to be their ‘girlfriend.’ These men would give the girls lifts. They would buy alcohol and cigarettes for them and later pursue them to indulge in sexual activities. The children were made to believe that everything that happened was normal.

The girls were threatened with violence

The investigation revealed that the men would drive the girls to a remote location and then force them to indulge in sexual activities. If they refuse, they will threaten them with abandonment and violence. The perpetrators gave death threats to them and to their families. It was also revealed that gang rape was not an unusual thing to happen to the victims.

It was found that the perpetrators did not use contraceptives while having sexual relations with the victims. The lack of protection during sex led to unwanted pregnancies, and most of such pregnancies were allegedly terminated. However, some of the victims had to bear the children of the perpetrators.

Authorities were nervous because of the race of the accused

In its report, the independent chair found that there was evidence provided by the survivors that pointed toward the inaction of the West Merica Police. It was mentioned that the Police did not take proper action in several cases to avoid being labeled as racist or because Asian men were involved in the case. Pursuing such cases would potentially attract headlines that would have been deemed negative for the Police department.

The chair reported that during the 1990s and early 2000s, the Police officials were more nervous about pursuing such cases because of the race of the accused, especially in parts of Wellington.

It is pertinent to note that while western reports often brand these perpetrators as “Asian men”, the men who groomed thousands of white girls in the UK have more often than not been Muslim men, mostly belonging to Pakistan and other Islamic nations.

The case of Lucy Lowe

The investigating chair found that the accused used the murder of Lucy Lowe to threaten other children. Lucy was only 16 years old when her abuser set her home on fire. Her mother and sister were killed in the incident. Though the accused taxi driver, identified as Azhar Ali Mehmood, was jailed by the court for the murder charges, he was never prosecuted for the sex offences.

When Lucy was just 14 years old, she gave birth to a child. When she died, she was again pregnant. During the investigation, the chair found that one particular school was well aware of Lucy’s murder, and the children were intimidated from making any complaints about the matter. One of the witnesses said in a statement that the girls of that particular school were aware of Lucy’s murder and scared to talk about it.

The agencies knew but ignored the sexual exploitation of children

The report noted that the authorities and investigation agencies were well aware of the sexual exploitation of the children, but they chose to ignore it. Because of their attitude towards the matter, the exploitation continued for decades. During the 1990s, police officers, youth workers, and teachers expressed their concerns about the repeated incidents of children going missing. However, they were not taken seriously by the council or the West Mercia Police department.

The independent chair was headed by Tom Crowther QC. He said, “The overwhelming theme of the evidence has been the appalling suffering of generations of children caused by the utter cruelty of those who committed child sexual exploitation. Victims and survivors repeatedly told the inquiry how, when they were children, adult men worked to gain their trust before ruthlessly betraying that trust, treating them as sexual objects or commodities. Countless children were sexually assaulted and raped.”

Children were judged for having multiple sexual relations

A survivor identified as Holly Archer (changed name) said in a statement, “Social services let me down, the mental health team, children’s mental health service – they let me down.” Archer was sexually abused when she was only 14 years old. She added, “The police, my GP surgery, everyone would see us on the street and just drive past in the middle of the night without saying a word.”

Alleging they dismissed themselves from their duty to protect the children, Archer said, “So actually I think everybody who had a duty of care dismissed themselves of that responsibility for the whole of that time in my life. They could have asked me what was happening, and it could have been just something as simple as that, and nobody asked me. Lessons I’d like to be learned out of that is that everybody has a little bit of professional curiosity, whether or not it’s their responsibility. Everybody’s job is to protect children. We were judged as being promiscuous or making those choices ourselves.”

Reports suggest that the victims were treated as common prostitutes. There was a so-called ‘rape-house’ in the area that operated for decades. Some of the victims were even jailed as they failed to pay the fines.

The judgment of 2013 and the failure of authorities to follow up similar cases

The report pointed out the judgment of 2013 in which seven men were jailed following Operation Chalice, under which it was found that girls as young as 13 were sexually exploited and groomed in exchange for money and alcohol. Out of seven men who were convicted in Operation Chalice were brothers. The court noted that the brothers sexually abused, trafficked, prostituted, or attempted to prostitute at least four teenagers between March 2008 and December 2009.

However, following the convictions, the local authorities in the area failed to follow up on the cases and did not understand the importance of focusing on similar cases in the Telford region.

The report said, “By 2015, both the council and [West Mercia police] provision for child sexual exploitation [CSE] had in some ways gone back almost a decade”. The report further added that in order to save funds, the Police and the Council scaled-down the specialist CSE teams to almost NIL following Operation Chalice.

West Mercia Police apologies to the victims

In response to the report by the independent chair, West Mercia Police issued a statement apologizing to the victims and survivors. Assistant Chief Constable Richard Cooper said, “I would like to say sorry. Sorry to the survivors and all those affected by child sexual exploitation in Telford. While there were no findings of corruption, our actions fell far short of the help and protection you should have had from us, it was unacceptable, and we let you down. It is important we now take time to reflect critically and carefully on the context of the report and the recommendations that have been made.”

He further added that the force had made improvements, and they have teams dedicated to dealing with the cases of child exploitation. He said that the department is taking steps to prevent such incidents from happening. He said, “We want people who are, or think they are, being exploited or are concerned about child sexual exploitation to report this to us. We will listen, and we will act on any information given to us.”

The Telford & Wrekin Council also issued an apology to the victims and survivors. In an official statement, the government spokesperson said, “Public bodies, their leaders, and frontline professionals must be unafraid of confronting criminality, including child abuse, no matter the race, ethnicity, religion, or other characteristics of perpetrators or their victims. We welcome the recognition in today’s report that those services have improved. But we are determined that previous mistakes must never be repeated, and we will not hesitate to take further national action if required.”

The Mirror’s investigation of 2018 led to independent inquiry

The investigation into Sexual abuse of children in Telford was initiated after an expose in Sunday Mirror in 2018. In the expose, the publication revealed that at least 1,000 children could have been victims of the scandal. It further added that at least three people were murdered, and two others died linked to the scandal. In its 18-month investigation, The Mirror found the social workers had known about the incidents since the 1990s, and the Police bluntly ignored the incidents for decades.

Donald Trump claims Elon Musk begged for subsidies, Tesla CEO hits back with “old man yells at cloud” meme

There seems to be no end to the war of words between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former US President Donald Trump. Instead, it is only getting more intensified by the day.

On Tuesday evening, Trump responded to a series of tweets the tech billionaire had sent Monday exhorting Trump to end his political career.

“When Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all of his many subsidized projects, whether it’s electric cars that don’t drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocketships to nowhere, without which subsidies he’d be worthless,” Trump wrote, “and telling me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican, I could have said, ‘drop to your knees and beg,’ and he would have done it,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Source: Truth Social

And predictably, it elicited a reaction from Musk, who is known for his tongue-in-cheek remarks and at times, eccentrically bold declarations on Twitter. Replying to the barbs by Trump, Musk tweeted: “Lmaooo,” while further tweeting out a Simpsons gif in reference to the “Old Man Yells at Cloud” meme.

Trump’s allegations against Musk over seeking subsidies for his projects came in the wake of tweets posted by the Tesla CEO, asking the former US President to sail into the sunset and retire from active politics.

“I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset,” Musk had said on Twitter. “Dems should also call off the attack—don’t make it so that Trump’s only way to survive is to regain the Presidency.”

The tweets were in response to allegations made by Trump against the Tesla CEO. Earlier last week, during an event in Alaska, Trump assailed Musk for allegedly lying about voting for him in the elections. “He said the other day. He told me he voted for me, so he’s another bulls**t artist,” Trump said.

Besides, Trump also took a dig at Musk over the news that Twitter is suing the Space X CEO for not honouring its contract of purchasing the social media company.

“Now Elon should focus on getting himself out of the Twitter mess because he could owe $44 billion for something that’s perhaps worthless. Also, lots of competition for electric cars!” Trump said.

Uttar Pradesh: Gangster act imposed against brother and nephew of SP MLA Dharmraj Yadav, their house in Barabanki to be attached

Strict action by Uttar Pradesh police and administration against the history sheeters and miscreants continues. In Barabanki, the police have imposed the gangster act against the brother and nephew of local Samajwadi Party MLA Dharmraj alias Suresh Yadav.

District administration and the police have ordered to seal the house owned by the SP MLA’s brother Dharmendra Yadav. Dharmendra Yadav’s son Arjun Yadav was booked under the gangster act in a case in 2020. The action is being taken in the same case.

The public works department team has estimated the price of Dharmendra Yadav’s house in the Muneshwar Vihar area of Barabanki to be Rs 95 lakh. The plush house is set to be attached on Wednesday 13th July 2022 in the presence of the magistrate and CO Navin Singh. On October 8, 2020, inspector Brijesh Kumar Verma, then in-charge of the Satrikh police station, had filed the gangster’s case.

Vinod Yadav, Umesh Yadav, Rajkumar, Pankaj Verma, Deepak Kumar, Avadhram, Pankaj Yadav, and SP MLA’s nephew Arjun Yadav were charged in this case. Arjun Yadav’s father Dharmendra Yadav is also a local Samajwadi Party leader. Vinod Yadav was said to be the main dealer in this gang. The district administration and the Barabanki police are taking strict measures in this case.

Dharmendra Yadav’s son Arjun Yadav is accused of the gangster act. He is accused of building this house with the money he earned from the illegal mining business. As the facts surfaced in this case, the administration released the orders to attach this house. According to a report by Jagran, the Superintendent of Police Anurag Vats said that many properties of the members of this gang are attached so far in this case and the total worth of those properties is around Rs 5 crores 75 lakhs 79 thousand and 500. With this house getting sealed the number reached Rs 6 crores 70 lakhs 79 thousand and 500.

As Yogi Adityanath was sworn in as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in his second consecutive term, the actions against gangsters, miscreants, mafias, and rioters became stricter than earlier. Illegal properties of anti-social elements are bulldozed by the administration. Properties accrued by miscreants through illegal means are attached. Now similar action is taken against the brother and nephew of SP MLA Dharmraj alias Suresh Yadav of Barabanki.

Udaipur beheading: NIA takes half-a-dozen suspects into custody including chief and secretary of Anjuman Talimul Islam

The National Investing Agency (NIA) took into custody roughly a half-dozen suspects in the Udaipur murder case on Tuesday (July 12, 2022), including Chief of Anjuman Talimul Islam Mujeeb Siddiqui and Secretary Farooq. All of the suspects have been brought to Jaipur and are being grilled in connection with the horrible murder of Kanhaiya Lal for supporting Nupur Sharma. The NIA squad is said to be ready for arresting all of them at any moment.

According to media sources, the NIA searched Mujeeb Siddiqui’s residence near Mukherjee Chowk in Udaipur last night before capturing him. Similarly, the NIA has apprehended several additional individuals, including former Chief Khaleel Ahmed. According to reports, two advocates and a Maulana are also being held. At the same time, reports of firearms confiscated from the accused’s home have surfaced.

Anjuman Talimul Islam, according to media reports, is the leading group representing Udaipur’s Muslims. This group was founded 116 years ago. All Muslims in Udaipur follow the fatwas given from there. Under the guise of this organisation, violent protests were also planned in Udaipur in response to Nupur Sharma’s remarks on Prophet Mohammad. The organisation had also petitioned the collector for immediate action against Nupur Sharma.

According to the memorandum filed by them, Nupur Sharma’s comments offended the Muslim community. The issue of inciting Muslims had risen to the forefront of this entire matter.

It is notable that when Ghaus Muhammad and Riyaz Attari beheaded Kanhaiyalal, the same outfit, Anjuman Talimul Islam, was seen appealing to the broader public for peace and harmony. However, It also played a role in inciting the Muslims.

As per the statutory functions of Anjuman Talimul Islam, the dates of Muslim festivals such as Eid and others are announced by this organisation. This organisation claims to educate the children of Muslim society, resolve the controversy of watching the moon during Ramzan, expand the number of madrasas, connect the Muslim institutions of the state with Anjuman, and financially assist orphans and the destitute of the Muslim community.

UP govt forms SIT to investigate allegations against Mohammed Zubair: Details of the 6 cases filed against Alt News co-founder

On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government formed a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate six cases that have been lodged against already arrested Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair. Zubair is locked up in Delhi’s Tihar jail for making derogatory comments against Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

According to the reports, the SIT has been headed by IG Preetinder Singh, and also DIG Amit Kumar Verma has been made a part of the team. The SIT is to investigate six cases that have been lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Hathras, and Muzaffarnagar. Of the total six cases, two cases are lodged in Hathras district while one case each is registered in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, and Muzaffarnagar.

Zubair is held in Tihar jail after he was detained on June 27 by Delhi police in connection with an FIR filed against him for allegedly hurting religious emotions through a tweet written in 2018. According to Prashant Kumar, assistant director-general of police, law, and order, the SIT has been directed to conduct an immediate investigation and file a charge sheet in court.

Two cases in Hathras

Reports mention that one of the Hathras FIRs was registered on June 10 under sections 147 (attempting to cause riot), 149 (causing unlawful assembly with common intention), 153A (promoting enmity between religious groups), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and Section 7 of Criminal Law Amendment. The investigations in the case are underway.

The second FIR in Hathras was filed on July 4 at City Kotwali, Hathras, under sections 153A, 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 298 (intent to wound religious feelings), and 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IPC. According to the reports, the warrant has been issued by the CMJ court in the case and Zubar will be presented before Court in the case.

Ghaziabad

According to the official, the third FIR was lodged on June 15, last year at Ghaziabad’s Loni Border police station under IPC sections 153 (provocation to riot), 153A, 295A, 505 (statements creating public mischief), 120B, and 34 (acts by multiple individuals in furtherance of same intention). The investigation into the case is underway.

Muzzafarnagar

The fourth FIR was filed on July 24, last year, at Muzaffarnagar’s Charthawal police station, under IPC sections 192 (falsifying evidence), 504 (insult with intent to incite a breach of peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation). A chargesheet has been filed in the case. The matter stands pending in the Court.

Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri

On July 1,  Zubair was charged with IPC Section 295A and IT Act Section 67 at Sitapur’s Khairabad police station, and on September 18 last year, the case was registered against him under Section 153A of the IPC at Lakhimpur Kheri’s Mohammadi police station. While he was granted temporary release in the Sitapur case, a Lakhimpur court sentenced him to 14 days in judicial prison and will hear his bail motion on Wednesday.

Zubair was detained a week earlier by Delhi Police for infringing on religious sentiments. The Sitapur police in Uttar Pradesh have requested his detention in a case involving allegedly offensive tweets directed towards seers. On July 8, the Supreme Court granted Zubair five-day temporary bail in the Sitapur case. Zubair applied for bail in a Delhi court on Monday.

Sri Lanka: PM and acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe declares nationwide emergency after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to Maldives

As chaos continues in Sri Lanka after protests by citizens over collapsed economy, today prime minister and acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency in the island nation. PM Wickremesinghe became the acting president of Sri Lanka after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives on Wednesday, which has led to more protests.

Along with emergency, the government has also imposed curfew in the western province. “The prime minister as acting president has declared a state of emergency (countrywide) and imposed a curfew in the western province,” the PM’s media secretary told Reuters. The western province includes the capital Colombo.

“Since the president is out of the country, an emergency has been declared to deal with the situation,” the PM’s office said. It is notable that an economic emegency

After already capturing the president’s residence, the protestors today stormed into the PM’s office, prompting police to fire tear gas shells. The protesters are demanding resignations of both PM and Ranil Wickremesinghe President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “There are ongoing protests outside the prime minister’s office in Colombo and we need the curfew to contain the situation,” a police officer said.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa his wife, and other family members have left the country. According to the Sri Lanka Air Force, the President landed at Male, the capital of the Maldives at about three in the morning. This is a week after the President fled from his official residence just before tens of thousands of protesters overran it. For the last few days, the Presidential residence has become a free for all picnic spot for people after the president had fled to a military base.

Reportedly, the president reached Maldives on an Antonov-32 military aircraft from Colombo. An immigration official in Colombo said that as per laws, the authorities could not prevent a sitting president from leaving the country. On their arrival in the Maldives, the president and his family were driven to an undisclosed location under police escort.

It is notable that Gotabaya was scheduled to step down from the post of president today to make away for an all-party government, but he left the country before doing that.

Earlier Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had also offered to resign to form the all-party government, but he has not done so amid continued protests. And now after the president left the country, he became the acting president.

Punjab: After Sidhu Moosewala’s track SYL, YouTube bans Kanwar Grewal’s ‘Rihai’ song, Akali Dal to protest against ban on July 15

Days after YouTube pulled down Kanwar Grewal’s latest song ‘Rihai’, the Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) youth wing named Youth Akali Dal, has decided to organize a tractor march on July 15, Friday. The march is scheduled to be as a protest against the Centre’s ban on two Punjabi songs, one by Kanwar Grewal and another by deceased singer Sidhu Moosewala.

According to a report by The Tribune, YouTube had received a complaint against Kanwar Grewal’s song ‘Rihai’, which demands that the Sikh prisoners be freed. The song by Grewal was uploaded on July 2 but is unavailable now. YAD president Parambans Romana declaring the protest march on July 12 alleged that the Government of India was trying to suppress the voices of Punjabi Singers.

“Akali Dal in views the ban on Sidhu Moosewala’s SYL song and Kanwar Grewal’s Rihai song as an attempt by GOI to suppress the voice and sentiment of Punjabis. In protest against and defiance of this ban YAD will take out a tractor march playing these songs in all Districts on the 15th”, he tweeted.

Reportedly, the Akali Dal had earlier expressed anguish over the Centre’s decision to ban two songs. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, reacting to the ban demanded to lift the ban on the songs and said that ‘such bans are not in the interest of healthy democracy’.

“Shiromani Akali Dal appeals to GOI to lift the ban on Kanwar Grewal’s song – Rihai keeping in view citizens’ right to freedom of speech and expression as well as sentiments of the Sikh community”, Badal had tweeted. Further, the Akali Dal core committee led by Badal had also issued an official statement claiming that there was nothing objectionable in either the SYL song sung by the late Sidhu Moosewala or the Rihai song sung by Kanwar Grewal.

“The core committee expresses grave concern at how freedom of speech and expression is being throttled by banning songs which solely express the sentiments of the people. There is nothing objectionable in either of the songs that have been banned by the Centre”, the statement read.

Deceased Singer Sidhu Moosewala’s song named SYL was banned after YouTube received a complaint from the government. However, the platform failed to clarify whether the legal complaint was made by the AAP government or PM Modi-led central government.

The song SYL was released posthumously on YouTube on June 23 and the latest song named Rihai was released on July 2. Both the songs are unavailable on YouTube after the ban has been executed. Reportedly, the Akali Dal Youth Wing will carry out the protest march against the ban and will play both songs in all the districts across the state.

Iranian women protest against the compulsory hijab mandated by Islamic rulers, share pictures and videos removing veils on social media

Iranian women are defying the laws requiring them to cover their hair in public by recording themselves taking off their hijabs in an act of defiance against the nation’s hardline president. The women are posting images of themselves removing their hijabs to protest Islamic laws that forbids women from exposing their hair in public.

The current uproar against the hijab law, according to President Ebrahim Raisi, a cleric supported by the country’s ultra-conservative religious elite, is “an organised promotion of moral corruption in Islamic society.”

The government declared July 12 as “Hijab and Chastity Day,” which means that activities will be staged to support regulations that require women to wear the hijab. Men have been showing their solidarity as Iranian women remove their headscarves to protest the day.

As the country’s Islamic rulers press down on “immoral behaviour,” Iranian rights groups have urged women to openly remove their veils on Tuesday and breach the Islamic dress code. Masih Alinejad, an Iranian-American journalist, author and women’s rights activist, who has been fighting a battle against Islamic veils for women made mandatory in Islamic nations, supported the move saying, “Iranian women will shake the clerical regime by removing their hijab and taking to the streets across Iran.”

In the crackdown, the so-called “morality police” have arrested women, with allegations that certain authorities have asked that public transportation personnel, as well as staff in government offices, and banks overlook so-called “bad-hijab” ladies. “Morality police” have been observing medical facilities and educational institutions in numerous Iranian cities to make sure women are covering their heads.

Iranian authorities recently detained several teenage girls and others for not donning hijabs at a skateboarding competition in Shiraz, a city in southern Iran.

It is worth emphasising that women in Iran are forced to wear a hijab, which covers the head and neck and hides the hair, under Islamic law, which has been in place since the 1979 revolution. While Iranian women battle to be emancipated from the restrictions of headscarves, the hijab is used to further the Islamic agenda across the world.

Sri Lanka crisis: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flees to the Maldives, India denies facilitating escape

On Wednesday, the Indian High Commission in Colombo refused to have helped the outgoing Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa flee to the Maldives. Extending support to the people of Sri Lanka amid the mounting political and economic problems in the country, the High Commission said that the media reports which claimed that India helped Rajapaksa escape from Sri Lanka were ‘baseless and speculative’.

“High Commission categorically denies baseless and speculative media reports that India facilitated the recently reported travel of the President of Sri Lanka and Basil Rajapaksa, founder and national organizer of SLPP, out of Sri Lanka. It is reiterated that India will continue to support the people of Sri Lanka”, the Commission tweeted.

In the series of tweets, it also added that the High Commission will stand by the people of Sri Lanka as they seek to realize their aspirations for prosperity and progress through democratic means and values, established democratic institutions, and a constitutional framework. To allow a peaceful succession of power, Gotabaya Rajapaksa has pledged to formally step down as president on Wednesday.

Reportedly, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s office announced earlier today that President Gotabaya, his wife, and other family members had left the country. Further according to the information provided by the Sri Lanka Air Force, the President landed at Male, the capital of the Maldives at about three in the morning. This is a week after the President left his official residence just before tens of thousands of protesters overran it.

Last night the Antonov-32 military aircraft that took off from Sri Lanka’s main international airport boarded President Rajapaksa, his wife, and two bodyguards to Male. Reports mention that on their arrival in the Maldives, the First Family was driven to an undisclosed location under police escort.

Some earlier reports had stated that Rajapaksa had left the country in a Navy ship around the time the protestors had stormed into his palace on July 9.

The Rajapaksas skipped four flights on Tuesday that were supposed to take them outside of Sri Lanka when immigration officials voiced their displeasure with allowing them to pass, as per the latest reports. The President and his family intended to bypass immigration and customs without having to stand in line with the general public, but authorities at immigration and the Colombo International Airport refused to comply.

The flights eventually took off without the Rajapaksas on board. Earlier on Tuesday midday, an enraged public detained Basil Rajapaksa, and immigration officials refused him passage to the aircraft by refusing to stamp his passport. Sloganeering ensued, and Basil soon fled the airport. He was supposed to go to Dubai, where he would have connected to another flight to Washington, DC.
