Anti-encroachment drive in Shaheen Bagh begins as planned, Delhi police provides cover: Reports

Amidst conflicting reports that the anti-encroachment drive in Shaheen Bagh had come to a halt due to a lack of police protection, news agency ANI has reported that the Delhi police will provide sufficient force to carry out the operation.

The anti-encroachment drive, by South Delhi Municipal Corporation, in Shaheen Bagh was scheduled to take place on Monday (May 9).

In a statement, the Chairman of the standing committee of SDMC central zone said, “Municipality will do its work; our workers & officials are ready, teams & bulldozers have been organized. Encroachments will be removed wherever they are, be it in Tughlakabad, Sangam Vihar, New Friends Colony or Shaheen Bagh.”

Meanwhile, Times Now has reported that the civic body officials had reached Shaheen Bagh. The news channel showed visuals of shopkeepers removing illegal structures on their own in anticipation of the demolition drive.

Citing sources, Aaj Tak earlier reported that the Delhi police had expressed their inability to provide security to carry out the operation. Another report by ABP News claimed that Delhi police did not have sufficient strength to deploy forces in Shaheen Bagh.

Opindia had also reached out to Shaheen Bagh police station but they claimed to not have any knowledge of the development.

The Communist Party of India (CPI-M) Marxist had earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the decision by the civic body to remove illegal settlements in Okhla, Shaheen Bagh in South Delhi.

Sharda University suspends prof Waqas Farooq Kuttay for setting question comparing Hindutva with Nazism and Fascism, issues ‘show cause notice’

Sharda University has issued a show-cause notice to Professor Waqas Farooq Kuttay for framing a question that equated Hinduism with Nazism and Fascism. Previously, it was stated that the professor who asked the question had been suspended, but now he has also been notified of a show-cause notice. 

Sharda University in Noida had come under scrutiny owing to anti-Hindu remarks. Hindus were equated to fascists in a question paper set for the BA Political Science batch of 2021-2022.

According to BJP politician Vikas Pritam Sinha, it was purportedly prepared by a Muslim teacher. In his post, the BJP leader mentioned Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Shalabh Mani Tripathi.

The fifth question on this question paper was, “What are the core reasons behind religious conversion?” At the same time, number six was, “Do you see find any similarity between Nazism/Fascist and the Hindu right-wing (Hindutva)?” In the question paper both the questions have been asked to be explained in detail.

Following notification of the issue, the university formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter.

This committee met with the students on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Professor Waqas Farooq Kuttay, who framed the question, was then served with a show-cause notice. In its preliminary investigation, the Committee also determined that the aforementioned question was inappropriate. It was also determined that this question would be omitted during answer sheet checking and marking and would have no bearing on the grade.

Sharda University’s Registrar posted a message on social media in which he stated that the Vice-Chancellor (VC) has also endorsed these suggestions. In addition, the university’s administration has apologised to the students for the question paper.

It is worth noting that Waqas Farooq Kuttay also attended Jamia Millia Islamia University. He had passed the JRF and NET (National Eligibility Test) exams. He continues to write articles targeted toward nationalists. He has criticised the Indian Army while writing on Kashmir. In some ways, he held the Indian government responsible for the terrorism in Kashmir.

Days after being attacked for leaving Islam, a 24-year-old former Maulana from Kerala Askar Ali has revealed that Indian Muslims are taught to not join the Indian army.

During a press conference on Friday (May 6), Ali informed, “We were taught to hate other communities and not to join the Indian army as we will have to kill our own community members which is against our religious principles.”

“This is what we were taught as we will be forced to kill the terrorists who try to infiltrate Indian soil. Aren’t they Muslims? Our religion teaches us not to kill another Muslim. This is truly a dangerous education,” he emphasised.

Aksar Ali stated that Muslims are taught to spread the same ideology to fellow members of the community. “This is extremely dangerous. Banning an organisation won’t help in curbing this menace. Islam as it is, is the real fascism,” he concluded.

Aksar Ali was attacked by family members for apostasy

The former Islamic scholar had recently alleged that he was being harassed by his relatives. While speaking to The New Indian Express on May 1, he said that his kin tried to kidnap him.

He informed, “Two relatives came to me on the pretext of discussing family matters and took me to the beach in the morning. Later, with the help of others who arrived in a car, they forcibly tried to put me in the vehicle. One person smashed my mobile phone. I screamed, and people who rushed to the spot called the police.”

On May 4, it was reported that 24-year-old Askar was attacked by a Muslim mob for leaving Islam. He filed an attempt to murder case with the Kollam police. In his complaint, Ali alleged that the mob attacked him after he quit Islam and added that he was facing threats from within the community for doing so.

Russian space chief threatens Elon Musk with consequences for supporting the Nazi Azov Battalion with his Starlink internet equipment

On May 9, billionaire Elon Musk said on Twitter that the head of Roscosmos (Russian Space Agency), Dmitry Rogozin, threatened him with consequences for providing ground-based subscriber equipment of the Starlink satellite company to the militants of the Nazi Azov Battalion and the Marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using military helicopters in Mariupol.

Musk shared a screenshot of a Telegram post by Rogozin in Russian that translated to, “From the testimony of the captured chief of staff of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel Dmitry Kormyankov, it follows that the ground-based subscriber equipment of the Starlink satellite company Elon Musk was delivered to the militants of the Nazi Azov Battalion and the Marines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to Mariupol by military helicopters.”

It further read, “According to our information, the delivery and transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine of PO boxes for receiving and transmitting the Internet from Starlink were carried out by the Pentagon.”

Threatening Musk for the consequences, the post read, “Elon Musk is thus involved in the supply of fascist forces in Ukraine with military communications. And for this, you will have to answer in an adult way, Elon, no matter how you turn on the fool.”

Musk said the post was sent to the Russian media. He further added that the word ‘Nazi’ used for Azov Battalion is not what Rogozin thought it meant.

In a follow-up tweet, Musk said, “If I die under mysterious circumstances, it’s been nice knowing ya.”

Rogozin has targeted Musk multiple times in part

Rogozin, on his Telegram channel, has targeted Elon Musk multiple times. When the social media platform Twitter had yet to announce the takeover by Elon Musk, he said it was funny to read about the “fight” between the White House and Elon Musk. He said, “The situation is presented as if the South African multibillionaire is fighting for freedom of speech on this social network, and the American Democrats, who have settled in power, are resisting this.”

He further added that the fight was not for the freedom of speech but for the ownership of an influential social media network. “This is a struggle for power between formal power and the power of moneybags,” he said.

Starlink support for Ukraine

On March 19, it was reported that Starlink‘s satellite internet service was keeping Ukraine’s internet alive amidst Russia’s attempts to cut it from the cyber world. Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, had directedly approached Musk for support on Twitter. Within a few hours, Musk said the service was active in Ukraine, and more terminals were en route.

Days after the service got active, on March 27, DW reported that Ukraine was allegedly using Starlink services to execute drone attacks on Russian tanks and positions. Rogozin had said, “This is the West that we should never trust. When Russia implements its highest national interests on the territory of Ukraine, Elon Musk appears with his Starlink, which was previously declared as purely civilian.”

On April 22, it was reported that Dave Tremper, the Director of electronic warfare for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, was impressed by the way Starlink resisted the Russian attempts of hacking and jamming. He had said, “The way that Starlink was able to upgrade when a threat showed up, we need to be able to have that ability. We have to be able to change our electromagnetic posture, to be able to change very dynamically what we’re trying to do without losing capability along the way.”

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau visits Ukraine a week after Russia allegedly captured Canadian Lieutenant-General in Ukraine

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has arrived in Ukraine to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the middle of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Interestingly, Trudeau’s visit comes a few days after Russia claimed to have captured Canadian Lieutenant-General Trevor Cadieu in a bunker in Azovstal, the last stand of the Neo-Nazi Azov battalion.

Justin Trudeau, along with his Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, made a surprise visit to Ukraine to meet Zelensky in the middle of the ongoing war.

Welcoming PM Trudeau, the Mayor of Ukrainian city Oleksandr Markushynsaid said, “I just had the honor of speaking with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. He came to Irpin to see with his own eyes all the horror that the Russian occupiers have done to our city. And, of course, he was shocked. He saw that those burnt and completely destroyed were not military facilities, but the homes of Irpin’s residents, who until recently enjoyed life and had their own plans for the future.”

Interestingly, the visit of PM Trudeau comes just a few days after Russia allegedly captured a retired Canadian Lieutenant-General Trevor Cadieu. Cadieu, who was under investigation for sexual assault allegations in Canada, was rumored to be in Ukraine for a while. Now, Russia has claimed that they captured the former Canadian General from Azovstal in the city of Mariupol, where Russia had surrounded the infamous Azov battalion.

Cadieu was allegedly running a bio lab in the region as per Russia and has now been captured.

Justin Trudeau was not the only surprise visitor to Ukraine, American first lady and Joe Biden’s wife Dr Jill Biden also paid a surprise visit to Ukraine to meet the first lady of Ukraine. With Russia allegedly bombing random areas of Ukraine haphazardly targeting civilians and Ukrainian politicians, these visits by the VVVIPs raise a few eyebrows.

Terror attack foiled in Punjab, IED packed with RDX recovered from Tarn Taran, two arrested

A massive terror bid has been foiled by Punjab police in Tarn Taran where an IED made with nearly 1.5 kilograms of RDX was seized from two people who were arrested on 8th May 2022. According to the police, the RDX was packed in a gunny bag and was recovered from the Naushehra area. The police are interrogating both arrested and getting more information about where and how the terrorists were planning to execute attack using these explosives.

The accused terrorists were arrested from a village in Tarn Taran. The police recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) equipped with RDX packed in a metallic box from the two arrested. The IED weighing over 2.5 kg was equipped with a timer, detonator, battery, shrapnel and 1.5 kg of RDX.

These arrests have come days after four people were arrested with the recovery of three IEDs packed in a metallic case (weighing 2.5 kg each) and one pistol in Karnal by the Haryana Police. The two accused terrorists arrested on Sunday 8th May 2022 are identified as Baljinder Singh alias Bindu (age 22) and Jagtar Singh alias Jagga (age 40). Baljinder is a resident of the village Gujjarpura in Ajnala, Amritsar, and Jagtar Singh is a resident of the village Khanowal in Ajnala, Amritsar.

Bindu worked as a nursing assistant in a private hospital in Ajnala, while Jagga worked as a laborer. Both admitted that they carried out the activity for money and drugs. Besides the explosives, a Bajaj Platina motorcycle and two mobile phones were also recovered from the arrested accused terrorists.

Additional Director General of Police (Internal Security) R N Dhoke said, “The Tarn Taran Police had received information that Bindu and Jagga were roaming in the Naushehra Pannuan area carrying explosives. They were planning to carry out a blast to spread terror among people in the area. Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ranjit Singh sent police teams to conduct raids in the area and both the accused were arrested with an IED in a metallic box when they were going on a motorcycle after retrieving it from the abandoned place”

SSP Ranjit Singh said, “The initial investigation reveals that the accused persons had gone to retrieve the IED on the instructions of their accomplice identified as Jobanjit Singh alias Joban, a resident of Awan Vasau in Ajnala. Jobanjit is already facing criminal cases under the NDPS act and has been declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO). A bomb disposal team of the Punjab Police later diffused the IED, which had nearly 1.5kg of RDX.”

An FIR, in this case, is registered under the relevant sections of the Arms Act, the Explosive Substance (Amendment) Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Tarn Taran police station.

It is notable that on 5th May 2022, four suspected Khalistani terrorists were apprehended from Karnal in Haryana and a large cache of weapons was recovered from them.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s MP Harnath Singh Yadav on Sunday (8th May 2022) slammed All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Asaduddin Owaisi and demanded his arrest in a sedition case for his remarks over disputed structure of Gyanvapi mosque. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi had criticized the Varanasi court’s decision to order a survey and videography of the disputed structure of the Gyanvapi mosque and the Shringar Gouri temple complex there. Owaisi said that this survey violates the law and by allowing the survey and videography of the premises, the court is paving the way for anti-Muslim violence.

Speaking to news agency ANI on the issue, MP Harnath Singh Yadav said, “Owaisi’s intention needs to be understood. Owaisi wants to create a rift between Hindus and Muslims in the country and he is dreaming of becoming Jinnah. So a case of sedition should be registered against him and should be put in jail immediately.”

He further said, “As far as the survey of Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi is concerned, any person, any institution is free to approach the court and when the lower court’s decision was challenged by the Muslim side in the higher court, the court rejected. The court’s decision must be respected.”

Harnath Singh Yadav added, “The local court had ordered a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque, which was later challenged in the Allahabad High Court. What is the fear in the survey of the Gyanvapi mosque? Which is the truth that he does not want to be exposed through the survey?”

Citing the Supreme Court’s decision on the Ram Janmabhoomi case, veteran BJP leader Harnath Singh Yadav said, “The way in which the Muslim brothers created communal harmony within the country on the decision of the Ram Janmabhoomi verdict and accepted it, in the same way, the survey of the Gyanvapi should be allowed on the orders of the local court.”

Earlier on Saturday 7th May 2022, Asaduddin Owaisi wrote in his tweet, “This order to survey Kashi’s Gyanvapi Masjid is an open violation of 1991 Places of Worship Act, which prohibits conversion of religious places. SC in Ayodhya judgment had said the Act protects secular features of Indian polity which is 1 of basic features of Constitution.”

He wrote in the next tweet, “Unfortunate that the Court* is blatantly defying the SC. By this order, the Court is opening the path for the bloodshed of Rath Yatra and anti-Muslim violence of the 1980s-1990s.”

This statement by Asaduddin Owaisi came a day after the survey and videography of the premises of the disputed structure called Gyanvapi mosque along with the Shringar Gouri temple idol were done on 6th May 2022 by the court commissioner as per the order of Varanasi’s civil judge. 

In the latest update on the issue of the disputed structure at the Gyanvapi in Varanasi, the survey and videography of the disputed Gyanvapi mosque structure in Varanasi had to be stopped today, as a protesting Muslim prevented the survey team from entering the mosque on Sunday. While the team was able to survey the outer façade of the structure, they could not enter the structure for survey despite a court order, as the entrance to the disputed mosque was blocked by the protesting Muslims. The survey process has been stopped now due to the protests, and the survey team will approach the court for further orders.

IPL: Faf du Plessis and Wanindu Hasaranga keep RCB in the hunt for a playoff spot even though star player Virat Kohli continues to struggle

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are right in the hunt for the playoff spots in this IPL even as their star player Virat Kohli’s struggles refuse to go away. Despite Kohli departing for another golden duck, his 3rd of the season, RCB put up an imposing 192 for 3 from their 20 overs and then restricted Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to just 125 bowling them out in 19.2 overs.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Bangalore got off to the worst possible start as Virat Kohli was dismissed off the first ball yet again. However, skipper Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar put on an impressive 105 runs partnership to get RCB back on track. Once Patidar was dismissed, Maxwell joined Faf and put on a 50 runs partnership to get RCB towards a sizeable total.

Just when SRH looked to be clawing back into the game with some tight overs and Maxwell’s wicket, Dinesh Karthik stepped into the arena to push RCB to a huge total with a hugely impressive 30 off 8 balls, including 22 from the last 4 balls of the innings bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi. For Hyderabad, uncapped Indian bowler J Suchith was the only standout bowler as he bowled his 4 overs for just 30 runs taking the wickets of Virat Kohli and the impressive Rajat Patidar.

In response, SRH’s chase got off to the worst of starts as they lost their captain Kane Williamson for a duck without facing a ball as he was run out to a direct hit from Shahbaz Ahmed. Before they could recover, they lost their other opener also for a duck as he was bowled by Glenn Maxwell.

The middle order of Rahul Tripathi, Aidan Markram, and Nicholas Pooran tried to keep SRH in the game, with Tripathi being particularly impressive yet again scoring 58 off just 37 balls but then Hasaranga took over the game as he ripped through the SRH middle and lower order taking 5 wickets for just 18 runs in his 4 overs.

The result keeps RCB in the 4th spot and 4 points above SRH in the 6th spot who do have a game in hand. The huge margin of the victory also did a world of good to the net run rate (NRR) of RCB even though it is still the worst NRR among the top 6. However, one win from their next 2 games will almost certainly guarantee them a place in the playoffs.

RCB next faces a struggling Punjab Kings on Friday, while SRH will lock horns with 8th placed Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday.

Anand Mahindra fulfils his promise, gifts a house to ‘Idli Amma’ on Mother’s Day

On Sunday (May 8), businessman Anand Mahindra took to Twitter to inform that the Mahindra Group has gifted a special kitchen to an impoverished woman named M Kamalathal on the occasion of Mother’s Day.

M Kamalathal is a resident of Vadivelampalayam village in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The elderly woman wakes up before sunrise each day, prepares 1000 idlis in her humble cottage and sells each for just ₹1. She prepares the batter, steams the idlis and grinds the chutneys.

Her objective is not to generate profits but serve humanity. She wants to make her idlis affordable for the daily wage labourers, migrant workers and their families. On learning about her story, Anand Mahindra posted a clip of The News Minute‘s coverage of the woman’s story on Twitter in September 2019.

He had tweeted, “One of those humbling stories that make you wonder if everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people like Kamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows her I’d be happy to ‘invest’ in her business & buy her an LPG fuelled stove.”

In the video shared by Anand Mahindra, a man named Senthil could be heard as saying, “If you go to the neighbouring village, one dosa is ₹20 and Idli is ₹6. But here people eat it for just ₹1. They come from 2 km away and if they buy idlis worth ₹30, three people can eat. Lot of people come here, eat well and wish her the best.”

“And whether they give money or not, she accepts it. There are people who eat for ₹10 and there are others who eat 10 idlis but give ₹5. But as long as she is alive, a lot of people will eat well. “

M Kamalathal had informed that she earlier used to sell idlis for 50 paise but had to increase the price to ₹1 due to an increase in the price of ingredients. Also known as Idli Amma, the elderly woman had expressed her desire to expand her kitchen.

“Mr Pugal from Mahindra came to my hut. It was too congested. I requested him for a new house for me. He promised to check and get back to me,” M Kamalathal had informed.

After she expressed the need for a better workspace, the Mahindra Group decided to act on it. A piece of land was bought and registered while Mahindra Lifespaces put together a house plan. A bhoomi pujan was conducted, followed by site excavation, bricklaying, roofing and painting.

The brand new building was handed over to M Kamalathal on the occasion of Mother’s Day. While speaking about the development, Anand Mahindra emphasised, “Immense gratitude to our team for completing the construction of the house in time to gift it to Idli Amma on MothersDay She’s the embodiment of a Mother’s virtues: nurturing, caring & selfless. A privilege to be able to support her & her work. Happy Mother’s Day to you all!”

Tamil Nadu: Ban on ‘Pattina Pravesam’ of the Dharumapuram Adheenam seer revoked after protests by Hindus

The Revenue Divisional Officer in Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai has revoked the ban imposed on the palanquin carriage of the Dharmapuram Adheenam Seer during the ‘Pattina Pravesam’ ritual. The administration in an order last week had banned the traditional practice of people carrying the seer in a palanquin citing law & order concerns and alleged human rights violations caused by the tradition.

A huge controversy had erupted in Tamil Nadu after the Mayiladuthurai Collectorate refused permission to conduct the traditional ritual of ‘Pattina Pravesam’ – a tradition in which devotees pay reverence to the seer of the Dharmapuram Adheenam by carrying him on a palanquin around the premises of his mutt. The Revenue Divisional Officer of Mayiladuthurai J Balaji, justifying the ban, claimed that the practice was a “violation of human rights” and would create law and order problems.

It all started when the Dravidar Kazhagam and other far-left outfits objected to the tradition and opposed the district authorities for permitting the event. Further, the groups had also questioned the conduct of the ‘Pattina Pravesam’ ritual by the Shaivite mutt based in the town of Tiruvavaduthurai in Kuthalam Taluk in the district earlier.

Protest by Hindu authorities

Following the order issued by the Mayiladuthurai Collectorate, Hindu organisations and devotees reacted strongly with a demand to withdraw the order. The 293rd pontiff of Madurai Adheenam Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal took a stand that he will himself lift the palanquin if permission to the same is denied. BJP Tamil Nadu President K Annamalai had tweeted to voice out his support in a similar gesture. “Ban on Dharmapura Adheenam’s centuries-old ‘Pattina Pravesham’ is an affront to TN’s civilisational culture. I’ll be personally there to carry the Adhinam on Palanquin on my shoulders,” he tweeted.

Following the fiasco, the chief of Madurai Adheenam Sri Harihara Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Swamigal stated that there is a threat to his life for speaking out against the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government’s order. According to the reports, he alleged that he was being threatened for posting questions to the MK Stalin-led government over their encroachment on the rights of Hindu temples. The Hindu seer also expressed to meet PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to convey to them the concerns regarding danger to his life.

In a fresh order on May 8, Sunday, Mayiladuthurai’s Revenue Divisional Officer has now officially revoked the ban on Dharmapuram Adheenam Seer’s Pattina Pravesam ritual. Revenue Divisional Officer of Mayiladuthurai J Balaji has taken the decision after a large number of Hindus and Hindu groups in Tamil Nadu objected to the invasion of the State in the religious tradition.

After the ban has been revoked, the Pattina Pravesam of the Dharmapuram Adheenam Seer will take place on 22nd May. Reacting to the development, BJP Tamil Nadu president Narayanan Thirupathy said that the DMK govt is anti-Hindu govt, which regularly attacks the Hindu rituals, cultures and traditions. He said that the ban has been revoked due to a strong opposition.
