‘Tweet jehad kab tak chalega?’ India Today journalist asks Afghan VP to ‘show his face’ as Taliban takes over Afghanistan

India Today journalist Ashraf Wani on Tuesday took to Twitter to question Afghanistan Vice President Amruallah Saleh on when will he show his face, after having ‘escaped to Tajikistan.

Ashraf Wani’s tweet

Wani, a journalist with India Today group based in Jammu & Kashmir, mocked the Afghan VP who has been very vocal about his anti-Taliban stand.

He was responding to a tweet by Saleh where he urged Afghans to ‘join the resistance’ against the Taliban. Wani mocked him and asked, “Why don’t you show your face? Till when will you continue the ‘tweet jehad’ from Tajikistan?”

Meanwhile, Saleh has said that he has not fled the country and is very much in Afghanistan. He has also declared himself caretaker President and sought international support.

He tweeted that in absence of President who is either absent, escaped, resigned or dead, the vice president becomes the caretaker President. He is currently in Afghanistan and is hence the legitimate caretaker President. He has also reached out to leaders to secure their support.

Indian hockey star PR Sreejesh lauds PM Modi for renaming Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand: Here is what he said

Indian Olympic hockey star PR Sreejesh on Tuesday heaped praises on PM Modi for renaming the prestigious Khel Ratna award after Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

“It is a big honour for us and for the sport of hockey to have the Khel Ratna named after one of the hockey legends Major Dhyan Chand,” PR Sreejesh said in a video that has gone viral on the internet.

The Olympian bronze medallist also spoke about the team’s interaction with PM Modi after returning from the Tokyo Olympics. Sreejesh said PM Modi put all of them at ease and struck a frank conversation with the players.

“We got an opportunity to speak to the country’s Prime Minister. But sir never made us feel that we were talking to a prime minister. He interacted with us in an open and friendly manner. He took us into our comfort zone…Sir (PM Modi) wished our coach for the victory and told us all that the entire country is celebrating our triumph at the Olympics. He also said that no matter how many laurels Indian athletes bring, but when the hockey team wins a medal, it is a special occasion for all the Indians,” Sreejesh said.

Indian hockey team creates history by clinching a bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics

The Indian Men’s Hockey Team created history at the Tokyo Olympics after it won the bronze medal in the Hockey event after registering a thrilling victory over Germany in the Bronze medal play-off. The Indian team defeated Germany 5-4, securing their first Olympics medal in 41 years. The Indian Hockey team had won the last Olympic medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Indian has won as many as eight gold medals in hockey events in the Olympics, besides a silver medal and three bronze medals. This was India’s 12th medal in the category, the latest being the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award rechristened as Major Dhyan Chand award

On August 6, a day after the Indian Hockey team won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that henceforth, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award shall be known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The Prime Minister said that he had received requests from people across the country to name the award after the Indian Hockey legend. Therefore, respecting their wishes, the name has been altered accordingly.

Radical Islam apologist profiled by Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint, who is a serial fake news peddler, now spreads Taliban propaganda: Details

Radical Islam apologist often branded as a journalist and profiled by Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint, CJ Werleman, is busy spreading propaganda that paints the Taliban in good light after the group managed to capture Kabul following the US Exit from Afghanistan. He appears to be making a considerable degree of effort to normalise the Islamist group.

Source: Twitter

On Tuesday, CJ Werleman claimed that the Taliban has not attacked civilians or US personnel at the Kabul Airport, assured women they could continue to work and study and that religious minorities could continue practicing their religion and announced a “general amnesty” for officials of the former government.

This was after he attempted to play defense for the Taliban by comparing them with crime statistics from the United States of America without any context.

Source: Twitter

The atrocities committed by Taliban against women and religious minorities are far too well documented for CJ Werleman to be not aware of them. And yet, he chose to play propaganda for the Islamist group by making ridiculous arguments.

Werleman, of course, has a history of spreading Islamist propaganda. During the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, he had claimed that the Uttar Pradesh Police had killed ‘peacefully protesting’ citizens.

The Police had responded to his tweet saying, “More than 250 police persons have been injured- 62 with gunshot injuries. Live and fired cartridges of non-prohibited bore (not used by the police) in excess of 700 have been recovered from ‘peacefully protesting’ citizens.”

Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint had eulogised Werleman in a profile describing him as a ‘bigot-turned-crusader against ‘Islamophobia’ who is taking on the Indian state’. C.J. Werlemen appears to have a special grudge against Uttar Pradesh, probably because a saffron-clad monk is the Chief Minister of the state. Numerous tweets of his refer to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as ‘Hindutva terrorist’.

Earlier, The Wire had provided platform to a journalist who attempted to provide legitimacy to the Taliban. “So merely because they are spreading terrorism or oppressing women one says that they (Talibanis) do not have a stake there (Afghanistan) is sheer stupidity,” the journalist had said.

Note: Earlier this article identified CJ Werleman as columnist with ThePrint. However, it turns out, he was only ‘profiled’ by Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint and has not written any article for them. We have updated the copy. Error is regretted.

Taliban claim they will allow women to study and work, but Afghans still remember the public stonings and floggings

Days after effectively taking control of Afghanistan, terror outfit Taliban declared an “amnesty” across the country and urged women to return to work, in a bid to reassure the wary population fretting over their fate under the Talibani regime.

Panic and fear had swept across the country after the fall of Kabul on Sunday, following which a multitude of city residents flocked to the airport, in a desperate attempt to fly out of the country.

“A general amnesty has been declared for all…so you should start your routine life with full confidence,” a statement issued by the Taliban said.

Enamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission, tried to allay fear among Afghan residents by asserting that the Islamic Emirate, the Taliban’s term for Afghanistan, doesn’t want women to be victims. “They should be in the government structure according to Shariah law,” he said.

The Taliban has reportedly said that women were the main victims of the crisis in Afghanistan for over 40 years and they dont want the women to be victims anymore. Samangani said that the Taliban wants to provide women with the environment to work and study, and even join the government “as per Islamic law and our cultural values”.

Speaking on the structure of the government, Samangani said, “It is not entirely clear yet, but based on experience, there should be a fully Islamic leadership and all sides should join.”

Samangani did not elaborate on the Islamic laws that people had to abide by, giving a hint that he assumed that people knew about the rules already and the Taliban’s expectations from them.

“People in this country are Muslim and we are not here to foist Islam on them,” Samangani said.

Notwithstanding Samangani’s assertions, many people remain sceptical about what the Taliban meant by amnesty and if it could be trusted to honour its promise. However, many Taliban leaders echoed Samangani’s assertions, saying that they won’t seek revenge against those who worked with the Afghan government or foreign countries.

Nevertheless, some in Kabul remain suspicious of the assurances made by the Taliban, alleging that the terror outfit has prepared a list of people who cooperated with the government and are seeking them out.

The Taliban made a lightning sweep across the country, swallowing one city after another as it intensified its bid to regain control of Afghanistan, raising alarm among the population of the prospect of regressing back to the repressive regime that defined the rule of Taliban in the late 90s.

However, ever since the Taliban commenced its offensive to recapture Afghanistan, it has sought to project greater moderation in its rule, something that is in stark contrast to its ham-handed rule from 1996 to 2001.

Back then, women were proscribed from attending school or working outside their homes, in conformity with Sharia Islamic law. Besides, they were also mandated to wear fully covered overgarments called chadaree and be chaperoned by a male relative whenever they went outside. The Taliban had also placed a ban on music and imposed severe punishments on those who violated the Sharia law, such as chopping off the hands of thieves, lashing women in public and stoning people over the allegations of adultry.

Moreover, the state on Monday, August 16, administered over 23.57 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to people in a single day, the second-highest so far. It had previously created a record by administering round 29.52 lakh doses in a single day on August 3.

Taking to Twitter, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath congratulated the authorities and the people of the state for pulling off the remarkable feat. He thanked PM Narendra Modi, the central government, the people of the state for their cooperation and the health workers for their efforts without which Uttar Pradesh could not have accomplished the “historic task”.

He ended his Tweet urging everyone to take their jab “Tika jeet ka”, and help defeat Covid-19.

According to data, so far, over 5,07,22,629 people in Uttar Pradesh have received their first doses while over 94,27,421 are fully vaccinated in the State. UP is the most populous state of India.

On the contrary, other States like Maharashtra lag with 5.01 crore doses delivered so far. The vaccination numbers in Rajasthan stand at 3.82 crores, West Bengal has vaccinated around 3.46 crore people, in Tamil Nadu only 2.71 crore vaccine doses have been given and Kerala has vaccinated only 2.46 crore of its population.

On August 3 OpIndia reported that Uttar Pradesh had administered 5 crore vaccines in total until that day. It’s commendable how in less than 15 days the state has administered another 1 crore vaccines to become the first state to reach the record breaking figure of of 6 crores.

The state administration stated in a press statement that the achievement is the consequence of Uttar Pradesh’s robust vaccination programme. According to the release, it is a key component of the Uttar Pradesh government’s comprehensive approach to limit and manage the epidemic, which also includes the tried-and-true ‘Test-Track-Treat’ (T3) technique and adherence to Covid recommended behaviour.

On Monday, the country’s most populous state – Uttar Pradesh reported 17 new cases of Covid-19 in a span of 24 hours. One fresh fatality was reported from the state in the same period, according to health department data. The number of active cases in Uttar Pradesh stands at 419, the health department said.

Deepika Padukone auctions clothes she wore for funerals, her ‘fans’ get into firefighting mode

Actress Deepika Padukone recently courted controversy on social media after she was found auctioning clothes that she wore during funeral ceremonies.

On Monday (August 16), popular Twitter user Maya (@Sharanyashettyy) shared pictures from the personal website of Deepika Padukone to showcase how the actress was auctioning clothes, dating back to 2013. She wrote, “I am so shocked…my favourite Deepika Padukone has auctioned her non-couture clothes from 2013… I repeat 2013 that she wore to different funeral events. Low blow!”

According to Maya, Padukone had auctioned the dresses she wore at the condolence meet of deceased actress Jiah Khan and the father of Priyanka Chopra. This includes a ‘white kurta with white-legged pants’ and a ‘Designer pin tuck Lakhnavi Kurti’ worth ₹2,700 and ₹8,000 respectively. The Twitter user had also pointed out how the actress had been selling clothes worn on other occasions. She had questioned Deepika Padukone’s decision to auction them instead of donating it to a charity.

Maya asked, “Who the hell buys old, second-hand Zara or Jhuttis for god’s sakes!!!! Rather why would you sell it and not donate this to the needy… classless! Sheesh…Don’t justify this by telling me she is doing it for charity.. you cannot be reselling Zara’s .. Jhoothis…10 to 15-year-old ordinary brand clothes… Why can’t you just give it to the needy or your househelp?”

While it is not usual for actresses and influencers to auction their clothes for a noble cause, the fact that Deepika Padukone chose to sell clothes that she wore at a funeral event drew social media criticism. According to a report by Bollywood Life, the actress sells her clothes (both couture and non-couture pieces) to support the ‘Live Love Laugh’ Foundation.

Netizens slam Deepika Padukone for her cheap act

Nevertheless, Deepika Padukone drew social media flak for making money off clothes worn at funerals. One user wrote, “They’ll do anything to swallow bucks! We middle-class folks give away clothes every now and then. And then too, we’re sensitive of what we pass on, what state the clothes are in, and how old/new they are. India survives on our taxes and our charities.”

One Ruchi lamented, “Such a cheap act… For everything, they go for donations with PR all over but she couldn’t even donate her old clothes?? What kind of ppl go and buy this second-hand stuff.. crazy.”

Another user pointed how even selling 50 of her wardrobe items would fetch a highly paid actress such as Deepika Padukone only about ₹1.5 lacs. “Instead of selling it for charity, she should’ve given these clothes to needy,” the user added.

PR team of the actress comes to rescue

Maya, the popular Twitter user who exposed how Deepika Padukone had been auctioning her funeral clothes, was soon bombarded by direct messages (DMs) and Twitter mentions. A fan of the actress named Avinash claimed that he felt lucky to ‘get his hands’ on a few of her wardrobe items. He also claimed that it was exciting to know that the actress had worn them.

Another user wrote, “Honestly we can take inspiration from Deepika on this one. There are so many clothes that we wear barely once or twice. It’s great if others can get a benefit out of it.” Other fans of Deepika Padukone justified her decision by claiming that the actress sells dry-cleaned clothes and that she is not ‘only wear once’ kind of person.

Fed by the incessant messages, Maya lamented, “Oh dear lord.. what do I with this Deepika Padukone PR activity in my mentions?” In order to please her blind followers, she conceded, “My God. Save me.. Deepika is so great. I accept. Happy?”

The Twitter user shared screenshots of a long message received from a Deepika’s fan. The deranged rant by the user got Maya irked so much so that she had to block her. Despite the last-mile damage control strategies employed by the PR team, the truth is out for everyone to see.

India carries out rescue operation, brings back Indian nationals from Afghanistan

Meanwhile, India has been carrying out its rescue mission amidst the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan’s capital city. At about 12 pm on August 17, the IAF’s C-17 Globemaster landed at Gujarat’s Jamnagar, safely with the evacuated Indians from Kabul. Additionally, two Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 carriers had landed in Kabul to evacuate the embassy staff and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel. On Monday (August 16), the first batch of 45 Indian personnel was successfully evacuated from Afghanistan.

Taliban takes over Afghanistan

After a month-long offensive against the Afghan army, the Islamist outfit Taliban finally reached the gates of Kabul on Sunday (August 15). They entered Afghanistan’s presidential palace hours after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

Since then surreal scenes have emerged as people try to flee the country to save their lives. Visuals of Afghan people falling from the sky as they tried to escape while hanging on to the wheels of the airplanes have gone viral on social media. Talibanis have been seen enjoying themselves as the amusement park as well in other surreal scenes.

Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is expected to become the new President of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, while US-based Ali Ahmad Jalali will head an interim government for the time being before the Taliban forms a full-fledged government.

Kerala: Two women arrested for pro-ISIS activities in Kannur

A team of National Investigation Agency(NIA) officials on Tuesday arrested two women in Kannur on suspicion of furthering the activities of ISIS and spreading its message on social media. The arrested women were identified as Shifa Harris and Misha Siddique.

The duo was reportedly a part of the group that was operating various ISIS propaganda channels on different social media websites, including Telegram, Hoop and Instagram. The premier agency believes that Harris and Siddique were involved in the online promotion of the terror group’s activity so as to radicalise people and recruit fresh blood for the organisation.

The investigating team from New Delhi arrested Shifa Harris and Misha Siddique, early morning from their house. The two will be transported to Delhi, reports said.

The arrests come months after the NIA had nabbed one of their accomplices, Musad Anwar, who was arrested in March 2021 from Kannur and following which a case had been filed against seven known and unknown people.

Incidentally, the NIA had visited the homes of Harris and Siddique earlier this year as well. However, they were not arrested then. Reportedly, the NIA got the breakthrough in busting this ISIS module following the arrest of Ameer Rehman earlier this month. Rehman was arrested on August 4 from Mangalore and belonged to the same team. Based on the revelations made by Rehman in his interrogation, the NIA team reached the house of the two women and arrested them.

For some time now, Kerala has been a flourishing grounds for Islamic extremism. Extremist ideologies from differing Islamic persuasions have gained currency in the state. Recently, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter suggesting that the Taliban might have recruited some of its members from the Indian state of Kerala. Tharoor quoted a video showing two “emotional” Talibanis converse in Malayalam (as claimed by him) said, “It sounds as if there are at least two Malayali Taliban here — one who says ‘samsarikkette’ around the 8-second mark & another who understands him!”

Kerala a breeding ground for ISIS

Investigations have revealed that ISIS had struck roots in Kerala as far back as 2014 with modules sponsoring religious conversions and trying to motivate professionals to join its fold in Afghanistan and Syria. Last year, in its report on terrorism, the UN cautioned that there are a sizeable number of ISIS terrorists in the Indian state of Kerala, adding that the ISIL Indian affiliate (Hind Wilayah), which was announced on May 10, 2019, has about 180 to 200 members.

Moreover, a charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency in July last year, regarding the murder of Special Sub Inspector Wilson exposed the nexus of the ISIS terrorists active and flourishing in the state of Kerala.

99% people in Afghanistan favour making Sharia the law of the land, most favour corporal penalties: Pre-Taliban Pew Research shows

On April 30, 2013, Pew Research Centre published findings of a survey, conducted during the days when there was US military presence in Afghanistan, stated 99 per cent of Afghanis wanted Sharia to be the official law of the land in the state. The study titled: “The World’s Muslims: Religion, politics and society” talked about the Muslims beliefs about Sharia. The survey was based on 23 countries where questions were asked pertaining to Islamic Sharia.

This survey was carried out before Taliban took over Afghanistan. Last week, in dramatic coup, the Islamist organisation Taliban took over the government as the elected President and other officials fled the country. The Taliban toppled the government weeks after US withdrew its forces.

Muslims favour making Sharia the law of the land

99% of Afghanis who were interviewed also favoured making Sharia law of the land. Similarly, 84% of the Pakistani who participated in the survey favoured the same. The survey stated that in South Asia, high percentages in all the countries surveyed support making sharia the official law, especially Afghanistan where as many as 99 per cent of Muslims favor making Islamic law the official law in their country.

Source: Pew Research Center

The survey asserted that level of religious commitment makes a big difference in attitudes about the implementation of sharia. Muslims who pray several times a day are more likely than those who pray less frequently to favor Islamic law as the official law of the land.

Muslims accept Sharia as the revealed word of God

According to the survey, in 17 of the 23 countries where the question was asked, at least half of Muslims say sharia is the devine word of God, and not a man-made script. A close look at the graph, suggests that roughly eight in ten Muslims (81%) in Pakistan say sharia is the revealed word of God. Similarly, in Afghanistan, 73% of Muslims believed that sharia is the revealed word of God.

Muslims feel the Islamic law should apply to all citizens

When asked whether the Islamic Sharia law should apply to only Muslims or to both Muslims and non-Muslims, it turned out that 61 per cent of the participants from Afghanistan believed that sharia should extend to non-Muslims as well. This percentage was, however, relatively low in Paksistan where only 34 per cent said that it should apply to all citizens in their country.

Source: Pew Research Center

There have been many reports of religious minorities, especially Hindus being persecuted in Pakistan where they are often subjected to forced religious conversion.

Should the Sharia court be allowed to address domestic and personal issues?

Marriage, divorce, and inheritance are a few of the many domestic and personal issues addressed by Islamic law. Most surveyed Muslims who believe that sharia should be the law of the land in their country are also in favour of applying Islamic law in these spheres.

In Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East-North Africa region, support for permitting Sharia courts to adjudicate family and property disputes is extremely strong. In Pakistan while 87 per cent of the people support this concept, 78 per cent Afghanis were also of the opinion that the Sharia courts should be permitted to interfere in property and family dispute matters.

What Muslims think about Hudud punishments?

Further, the survey stated that in 10 out of 20 countries, where people want sharia to be the law of the land, at least half say they support Hudud punishments such as whippings or cutting off the hands of thieves and robbers.

In South Asia, Pakistani and Afghan Muslims clearly support ‘Hudud’ punishments. In both countries, more than eight-in-ten Muslims who favor making sharia the official law of the land also back these types of penalties for theft and robbery (88% in Pakistan and 81% in Afghanistan).

Source: Pew Research Center

Hudud (also called Hadud or Hudood) punishments refers to capital or corporal punishment in Islam. There were traditionally regulated by Sharia, the religious law in Islam that comes from the Hadith that lists the sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad.

Hudud is a class of punishments prescribed by the Quran, Islamic holy book, and the sunna for crimes considered to be against God. While Islamists jurists have various interpretations, common crimes include theft, adultery, making unproven accusations of adultery, consuming intoxicants, armed robbery and apostasy. The prescribed punishments range from lashes to banishment to death. Strict evidence is required for conviction, such as four credible eyewitnesses to prove adultery. In addition, the crime must have been committed by a willful and sane adult.

Muslims favouring stoning as the punishment for adultery, death penalty for those who quit Islam

The survey stated that 89% Muslims in Pakistan, who stated Sharia should be the law of land, favoured stoning as the punishment for adultery. This figure stood at 85% in Afghanistan.

Apostasy, or leaving the faith, is a very controversial issue in the Muslim world and experts say the majority of scholars believe it is punishable by death. The survey by Pew Research Centre conducted in 2013 suggests that while 79% of the Afghani Muslims considered it to be okay to award death penalty to those who quit Islam, 76% Paksiatni Muslims also felt likewise.

Ever since the Islamist group Taliban has gained control over Afghanistan, it is being widely reported that the fundamentalist group has started imposing the strict Sharia in the country. However, this particular survey conducted by Pew Research Centre in 2013, shows that maximum number of citizens in Afghanistan were in favour of the Sharia, even when the country was not under Taliban rule. Hence, even before the Talibanis gained control on Afghanistan, a large part of the country’s population appeared to be allied with the thoughts of the Islamist organisation.
