Congress leader Milind Deora slams Delhi Congress chief PC Chacko for blaming late Sheila Dikshit for Delhi debacle

The Congress party’s appalling electoral run continued as it drew a blank at the recently concluded assembly elections in Delhi. Following the abject defeat, Delhi Congress chief, PC Chacko passed the buck for party’s poor performance to erstwhile Delhi chief minister late Sheila Dikshit.


Chacko reasoned that the Congress party’s downfall started in 2013 when Sheila Dikshit was the chief minister. Chacko added that the emergence of a new party AAP took away Congress’ vote back and it still remains with it.

However, senior Congress leader Milind Deora expressed his disapproval with PC Chacko’s assertions. Extolling Sheila Dikshit, Deora said that she was an exceptional politician and administrator, adding that under her Delhi was transformed and Congress became stronger than ever. Deora stated that it is inappropriate to shift the blame on her after her death.


Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera too expressed his disagreement with holding Sheila Dikshit responsible for Congress’ abysmal performance in Delhi assembly elections. To reinforce his point, Khera pulled up vote-share figures Congress had with and without the leadership of Sheila Dikshit. In 2013, when Congress lost, it had a vote-share of 24.55 per cent. Vote-share in 2015 slipped to 9.7 per cent when Sheila Dikshit was not involved and in 2019, under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit, Congress’ vote-share again rose to 22.46 per cent.


It may be noted that Sheila Dikshit is widely recognised as a good administrator, and her defeat in 2013 is seen as the result of country-wide protests against corruptions in the UPA government at the centre. Arvind Kejriwal led AAP had ridden this anti-corruption wave to attain power at that time.

Following the poll debacle in Delhi yesterday, various Congress leaders came out questioning the party’s strategy that led to an embarrassing defeat for the second time in the row. However, some Congress leaders were more occupied in expressing their happiness over BJP’s defeat in the Delhi polls. Former union minister P Chidambaram had hailed AAP’s victory as “defeat of bluff and bluster”. This did not sit well with the Delhi Mahila Congress President Sharmistha Mukherjee who trenchantly asked if the party had farmed out the task of defeating BJP to other parties. Mukherjee questioned Chidambaram for gloating over BJP’s defeat while being unconcerned about its own poll drubbing.

Amidst severe criticism, Delhi Congress chief PC Chacko has tendered his resignation following disastrous assembly elections for the Congress party.


In the 70-member assembly, Congress could not open its account, failing miserably in sending even a single legislator to the Delhi Assembly. Congress’ tally stood at zero as it scored back-to-back ducks in the Delhi assembly elections.

Replying to a query in Parliament, the Union Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Thakur has stated that 15 Cr loans amounting to 4.78 lac crores were disbursed to women borrowers under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, reports ANI.

Anurag Thakur said, “As on 31 January 2020, 15 Cr loans have been disbursed to women borrowers, since the inception of the scheme, amounting to 4.78 lac Cr under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana”.

Apart from that, the Union Minister informed, “Under PMMY, loans are extended to eligible borrowers for manufacturing, processing, trading, services, and activities allied to agriculture which help in income-generating and employment. However, profession wise details are not maintained centrally.”

As per the ANI report, The three major states where the highest number of Mudra loans have been distributed are, Tamilnadu with Mudra loan worth 58,227.47 Crores, West Bengal with 55,232.19 Crores, and Karnataka with 47,714.04 Crores respectively.

The Union Territories Daman and Diu saw the lowest number Mudra Loan borrowers, with loans totalling 10.28 Cr, Andaman and Nicobar islands got Rs 94.80 Cr as loans and Lakshadweep was disbursed Rs 5.07 Cr as loans under the PMMY.

A day after people in Delhi once again rejected the Congress party, the Delhi Mahila Congress chief and party spokesperson Sharmishtha Mukherjee took on Congress veteran P Chidambaram for ‘gloating’ over AAP’s win. The former union minister had taken to Twitter to welcome the AAP win as “defeat of bluff and bluster”.

Slamming the party stalwart, the daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, took to Twitter to ask the former union minister if the state Congress units should shut shop in case the party has decided to outsource the job of defeating BJP to regional parties in various states.

“With due respect sir, just want to know- has @INCIndia outsourced the task of defeating BJP to state parties? If not, then why r we gloating over AAP victory rather than being concerned abt our drubbing? And if ‘yes’, then we (PCCs) might as well close shop!“ asked Mukherjee.


Mukherjee was responding to the scam accused Congress leader P Chidambaram’s Tweet in which he had, yesterday, welcomed the AAP victory in Delhi polls, saying: “AAP won, bluff and bluster lost. The people of Delhi, who are from all parts of India, have defeated the polarising, divisive and dangerous agenda of the BJP. I salute the people of Delhi who have set an example to other states that will hold their elections in 2021 and 2022.”

Mukherjee had taken to Twitter after Congress’ debacle in the Assembly polls, calling for action rather than introspection. “Can we honestly say that we’ve done all 2 put our house in order? We r busy capturing Congress whereas other parties are capturing India. If we r 2 survive, time 2 come out of exalted echo chambers!” opined the Delhi Mahila Congress chief.

The Congress party spokesperson Sharmishtha Mukherjee had been critical of her own party after it not only scored a duck in 2020 Delhi’s Assembly elections, repeating its 2015 performance, but the party’s performance has worsened with respect to candidates holding on to their security deposits.

Out of the 66 seats, the Congress party contested in the Delhi election, it lost its security deposit in 63 of the seats. Thus 95 per cent of the party’s candidates could not hold on to their security deposit, unlike the 2015 Delhi Assembly Election, where the Congress party contested all 70 seats and lost its security deposit in 62 of the seats, amounting to 88 per cent of the party’s candidates losing their security deposit.

If a candidate fails to get one-sixth of the votes in his/her constituency then the amount deposited by the candidate is seized by the Election Commission. According to Section 34, 1(a) of the Representation of the People Act 1951, it is mandatory for candidates to deposit a security of Rs. 10,000 to contest assembly elections. A security deposit is required to ensure that only serious candidates file their nominations to contest the elections.

Two men from West Bengal loot 1.34 crore from Merit-cum-Means Scholarship in Jammu and Kashmir by creating fake beneficiary accounts

The Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch has initiated an enquiry against officials of the Ministry of Minority Affairs and others for their alleged role in a huge fraud with regards to merit-cum-means scholarship involving a whopping amount of Rs 1,34,21,168.

According to reports, the Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir police have initiated an inquiry on the basis of communication by the General Administration Department, which had received a complaint from the Ministry of Minority Affairs.

The enquiry conducted has prima facie revealed that out of 474 beneficiaries of the merit-cum-means scholarship scheme, 463 were fake and an amount of Rs 1,34,21,168 had been credited into the “fake beneficiary” accounts of West Bengal.

“As many as 317 fake accounts were in the State Bank of India, 69 each in Bank of Baroda and United Bank of India, five in Allahabad Bank, two in Bangiya Grameen Vikas Bank, one account in the Central Bank of India as against 463 bank accounts of J&K mentioned in the application form of candidates who were shown to be residents of Qazigund Kulgam,” an officer of the Crime Branch said.

It is reported that during the enquiry it has surfaced that the fake applications were uploaded on the National Scholarship Portal through two electronic devices in the name of Shubankar Sarkar S and Salim Sheikh, residents of West Bengal, who seemingly had the access to the username and password for uploading the applications and thereby furnished the institutional verification.

The verification furnished by District Nodal officer Kulgam, the bank revalidation through CBS, by PMFS followed by digital signatures by Ministry Nodal officer and State Nodal officer has been instrumental in processing and release of payment to the 463 fake beneficiaries, the press release said.

“The omission and commission on part of the officers concerned, Shubankar Sarkar of West Bengal and Salim Sheikh of Bedrabad, Malda district, West Bengal, and others acting in deceitful and fraudulent manner by way of impersonation have caused wrongful loss to the exchequer and wrongful gain to beneficiaries. So they have prima facie committed offences punishable under Sections 420, 468, 120-B of the IPC, read with Section 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 5 (2) of the PC ACT,” the Crime Branch added.

Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP Anil Desai has moved a private member bill in the upper house proposing the introduction of incentives to promote limiting the number of children to two per family.

Reportedly, the Shiv Sena MP has introduced a Constitutional Amendment Bill to introduce a new provision – Article 47A into Part IV of the Constitution of India to incentivise people who keep their family limited to two children and seeks to withdraw every concession from people who fail to adhere to the small family norm.

“47A. The State shall promote small family norms by offering incentives in taxes, employment, education etc. to its people who keep their family limited to two children and shall withdraw every concession from and deprive such incentives to those not adhering to small family norm, to keep the growing population under control,” the new article 47A proposed by Shiv Sena MP reads.

Citing the frightening population growth in India as the reason for proposing the amendment, Shiv Sena MP in his bill said, “The fact that the population of India has already crossed over 125 crores is really frightening. The country has doubled its population in just forty years and is expected to unseat China as the world’s most populated country in the next couple of decades, by the year 2050.”

“As per the UN report, India, Nigeria and Pakistan are the countries which have the highest rate of growth of population. India’s current yearly growth rate is 1.02 per cent. The country as a whole has a population density of 416 people per square kilometre, which ranks 31st in the World. Despite the fact that we have framed a National Population Control Policy, we are the second-most populous country in the world,” the bill reads.

The bill further argues, “Population explosion will cause many problems for our future generations. We have to be concerned about the population explosion. The Centre, as well as State Governments, should launch schemes to tackle it. Our natural resources are extremely overburdened. The rate of growth of any country is directly related to the size of its population.”

“Natural resources like air, water, land, woods etc. are subjected to overexploitation because of overpopulation. Today, there is a greater need to keep a strong check on the increase of our population.”

  The Shiv Sena MP called for encouraging people to keep the family small by offering tax concessions, priority in social benefit schemes, and school admissions. “Today, there is a greater need to keep a strong check on the increase of our population,” said Shiv Sena MP.

He also suggests that measures may be introduced to discourage people from having more children, by withdrawing tax concessions, imposing heavy taxes, and by making other punitive provisions for violations.

Speaking from the ramparts of Red Fort about population explosion in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence speech last year had stressed on the issue of ‘population explosion’ and had urged the country to work towards family planning, smaller families to ensure that dreams of children get fulfilled.

PM Modi had insisted on necessary of population stabilisation in the country. PM Modi had said keeping families small is “an act of patriotism”.

“I want you to do proper family planning and you will naturally see that a smaller family can be happier and more content. Your family will be away from diseases, will have more resources,” the Prime Minister had said.

On the lines of PM Modi’s idea, the premier government policy think-tank Niti Aayog had also held a national consultative meeting titled “Realising the vision of population stabilisation: leaving no one behind” to discuss a roadmap for population stabilisation and to analyse key gaps in India’s family planning programmes.

While answering a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Nityananda Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, informed the House that the children whose names did not find a place in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam will not be sent to detention centres, provided their parents are included in the final list.

The Minister of State clarified that there are approved standard operating procedures in place to deal with such cases. He added that specific provisions have been made for children whose parents have been included in the final NRC draft while they have been excluded.

Rai said in a written reply, “The Attorney General for India stated on January 6, 2020, before the Supreme Court that the children of parents included in NRC, Assam, will not be separated from their parents and sent to the detention centre in Assam pending decision on the application.”

While the initial NRC draft had identified over 40 lakh suspected illegal immigrants, the final draft in August had only over 19 lakh names.

NRC was conducted in Assam under the supervision of the Supreme Court. The final list published in August 2019 did not feature the names of 19 lac people. After the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by the Parliament, the left-liberal Jamat cast aspersions in the minds of the people and fuelled the mobility of violent mobs and Islamic supremacist protests.

Delhi: Shots fired at AAP MLA Naresh Yadav’s convoy, 1 party volunteer dead

Hours after winning the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed that unidentified men on Tuesday night opened fire on the convoy of its MLA-elect Naresh Yadav and volunteers while they were returning from a temple visit.

According to the reports, at least one volunteer Ashok Mann died due to bullet injuries and one has been injured, AAP tweeted on Wednesday.


Reportedly, the attackers opened fire at Naresh Yadav’s convoy while it was passing through Kishangarh area. Seven rounds were fired at the Mehrauli MLA-elect convoy.

Reacting to the attack, Naresh Yadav said the incident is unfortunate. “The incident is really unfortunate. I don’t know the reason behind the attack but it happened all of a sudden. Around 4 rounds were fired. The vehicle I was in was attacked. I am sure if police inquire properly they will be able to identify the assailant,” Naresh Yadav said.

Naresh Yadav, who was accompanied by volunteers, was returning from a temple visit from Mehrauli late last night when the incident happened. Naresh Yadav had won from Mehrauli assembly seat.

“The convoy of Yadav was attacked. Unidentified men opened fire at the convoy when Yadav was returning from the temple after results. A party volunteer Ashok has been killed,” senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said. Singh has slammed Delhi police and has called this attack the murder of law and order situation in Delhi.

The incident reportedly happened near Fortis Hospital. AAP spokesperson Ankit Lal has stated that miscreants from 1 car had fired shots and police was present in the area.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR in connection with the firing incident. Delhi Police said that investigation is on and working on all angles to find out the motive behind firing the shots at Naresh Yadav’s convoy.

As per latest reports, Delhi police has stated that Yadav was not the target of the shooter and the killer had come to specifically kill the man (AAP volunteer Ashok Mann).

The AAP won in 62 constituencies with a voting percentage of 53.57, while the BJP got eight seats with a vote share of 38.51 per cent. The Congress drew a blank for the second successive assembly elections in Delhi.

Dalit man converted to Christianity alleges girlfriend’s family made him convert to Islam and undergo circumcision as a precondition for marriage, later disown him

A 25-year-old Dalit man who had embraced Christianity, Bobbili Bhaskar, has alleged that his girlfriend’s family made him convert to Islam, undergo circumcision and changed dietary habits only to have his marriage proposal turned down by girl’s father. A resident of the Vikarabad district of Telangana, Bhaskar, now known as Mohammad Ahmed Hunain, has approached the State Human Rights Commission complaining about the girl’s family.

In a letter to the State Human Rights Commission dated 18 January 2020, Bhaskar has appealed to question the girl in its presence, and direct the police to lodge a first information report (FIR) against her family. The letter says that the station house officer (SHO) of Vikarabad police station isn’t taking any action against Nikhath Sultana (his girlfriend), her father Saleemuddin, and three men who beat him up, namely Asif, Siraj and Lateef.

It further said that after Bhaskar and Nikhath, who knew each other for the last 11 years, turned major, Bhaskar approached her father. He accepted the relationship but asked Bhaskar to convert to Islam. When Bhaskar approached her family for the wedding after his conversion and fulfilling all the pre-set conditions, they “behaved with me as (if) I am a stranger to them and don’t know them”, wrote Bhaskar in the letter to the Human Rights Commission.

Bhaskar approached some elders in the Muslim community for intervention. They asked the two parties to meet them together for an amicable solution, but the girl’s parents did not turn up. Three men from her family also thrashed him in a public park, the letter says.

According to a report by Swarajya Magazine, Bhaskar, went on to obtain a religious conversion certificate from a local Muslim organisation. He then underwent the circumcision.

The conversion certificate, dated 10 June 2019, was issued by one ‘Muslim Welfare Association Tandur’ (Tandur is an area in Vikarabad). It mentions Bhaskar’s “Islamic name” as Mohammed Abdul Hunain.

Bhaskar’s conversion certificate issued by a Muslim body in Telangana

Speaking to Swarajya, Bhaskar divulged that the circumcision was carried out by a Muslim surgeon in a Vikarabad-based hospital. He told that he regretted the decision as it has left him in perpetual pain and trauma.

“It was traumatising. It still hurts,” said Bhaskar who asserts that he would have never taken this step had this not been a precondition set by the girl’s family.

The atrocities, however, did not stop at this. The girl’s family further demanded that Bhaskar, who was a strict vegetarian should now become a regular meat-eater. In hope to get married to his lover, Bhaskar, from a Church-goer, readily became a five-time namaazi.

So committed Bhaskar was to win over his girlfriend’s family that he would shoot videos of him reciting Islamic prayers and send them to her family, divulged the devastated man to Swarjya.

However, four months after his conversion when Bhaskar approached the girl’s father, the later refused to even recognise him. Though Bhaskar gave ample proof that he had been religiously observing the Muslim way of life, he could not convince the girl’s father for getting the two married.

Bhaskar kept persuading him for weeks, but the father continued to be unresponsive towards him, he says. Three men from their family beat him up when he tried to get the community involved. Bhaskar approached the local police, but the cops refused to intervene, he says.

Left with no other option, Bhaskar has now approached the State Human Rights Commission.
