The campaign against Akshaya Patra: Fuelled more by morbid bigotry and vested interests than concerns for children welfare?

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (APF) is under attack again from motivated activists for its mid-day meals. Recently, ‘Experts’ wrote an open letter to the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) demanding that they withdraw the compliance certificate that was awarded to the APF after their technical opinion on the matter was sought by the Karnataka government.

About three weeks after the open letter, a report was published on The Hindu by Archana Nathan where the argument was made that children are not eating the food provided by the APF because it was too bland. It also relied on a report by the Karnataka State Food Commission (KSFC) which claimed that children were not eating as much as they should because they did not find it tasty enough.

How the KSFC came to that conclusion is not said, nor is it said if the KSFC conducted or pitched the idea for any comparative study to ascertain the level of food consumption by children in mid-day meals across the country. Before the APF is dragged through the mud, due diligence ought to have been observed to produce some manner of evidence to suggest that schools, where mid-day meals were not provided by the APF, performed better in this regard.

No evidence appears to have been provided either to suggest that children in schools were APF provides food suffer disproportionately from malnutrition. It is not clear if they suffer from malnutrition at all. Therefore, under such circumstances, the stubborn insistence to serve food that goes against the ethics of APF seems rather mystifying and bewildering.

One person on which The Hindu relied on for its report is Dr. Sylvia Karpagam, an activist associated with the Right to Food campaign, which has numerous foreign funded NGOs working under its banner as well. “They don’t like the food,” she said. “You can bring bowlfuls of something I’ve never eaten in my life and tell me it is really healthy for me, but I’m not going to eat it. It is human behaviour. You need to like the smell, the taste, you need to want to eat it. What’s happening is that because they’re so hungry, the children are eating a bit, but definitely not to a full stomach. Isn’t the entire objective of the mid-day meal scheme then just lost?”

The only problem with Karpagam’s claims is that she makes vast generalizations that appear true on the surface but does not stand the test of scrutiny. She makes the claim that children are being forced to eat because they are hungry and they never eat to a full stomach as the food is bland but any parent can confirm, children would hardly ever finish their food if left to their own devices.

Perhaps, a greater responsibility ought to be placed on school authorities to ensure that children finish the content on their plate. In real life situations, multiple factors are at play, to singularly blame the lack of onions and garlic alone for children not finishing their food, and even that has not been conclusively proven yet, will take an extraordinary deal of evidence even the minutest portion of which hasn’t been produced thus far yet.

Karpagam, herself, got some deeply problematic opinions and it’s unclear the extent to which her opinions are being influenced by her thinly-veiled bigotry. Her tweets and the kind of tweets she retweets are enough evidence of her inherent bigotry.

In the past, Karpagam has also written an article where she claimed that Brahmins obstruct India’s development. In the article, she wrote, “Brahmin doctors mislead patients about nutrition, promoting vegetarianism in spite of all scientific knowledge and medical guidelines pointing to the contrary.”

Karpagam also states that Brahmins have created “havoc” in the field of nutrition. She says that Brahmin nutritionists drink cow urine. Apart from Brahmin doctors and nutritionists, Karpagam has problems with Brahmins in bureaucracy, education and academia, research, feminism, literature, media, judiciary, civil society, banking, economics, politics, industry, basically in every field under the sun. The entire article is a virulent spectacle of anti-Brahmin bigotry and resembles the kind of propaganda that was run against Jews in Nazi Germany.

That the opinions of such bigots are treated so respectably in mainstream media is a grave cause for concern. It appears quite obvious that Karpagam’s tirade against Akshaya Patra is motivated by a virulent hatred for the Brahmin community and a desire to uproot ‘Brahmin hegemony’. In her mind, APF is a Brahminical organization despite the fact that it is an arm of ISKCON which is a Vaishnavite sect. Therefore, the mid-day meals must be opposed at all costs.

The campaign she is associated with, too, appears to have vested interests. The campaign against APF has been engineered by the Right to Food Campaign which represents a very specific section of ‘civil society’. This section receives funding from Christian organizations abroad, from George Soros’ Open Society Institute which has a very controversial record and has intimate links to ‘Urban Naxals’ and separatists.

An organization in the steering group of RFC receives huge funds from the same organizations that donated huge sums of money to another organization that published a report demonizing the Amarnath Yatra. Under such circumstances. the attack on Akshaya Patra appears to be part of the nefarious agenda of these ‘civil society’ organizations.

The opinions of Umashankar S.R., principal secretary of education in Karnataka, comes as a breath of fresh air in the otherwise motivated The Hindu report. He is quoted as saying, “NIN has said that APF meets the nutrition standards, so why should we cancel the contract with APF? Except for this one small reason (the refusal to use onion and garlic), there are a lot of advantages for the government to continue its contract with ISKCON. They provide hygienic meals and cater to a large group of children in the state as well as in the country. We aren’t delving into philosophical and religious issues. And we cannot punish them unnecessarily for somebody’s objections.”

“Who is going to serve such a huge number of children if we cancel this contract?” he said. “There are logistical issues; overnight, we cannot build kitchens and hire cooks. The administration cannot function on the basis of philosophical arguments. I’ve told these activists directly — they have their heads in the clouds. I live on earth.”

On one hand, we have activists motivated by vested interests and quite blatant bigotry. On the other hand, we have an institution which runs a very efficient mid-day meal scheme serving lakhs of children. On one hand, we have logistical issues that are very efficiently handled by APF, on the other hand, we have objections which are quite ostensibly motivated by bigotry. The question at the heart of the matter is, are we going to risk the future of our children by scrapping an extremely successful service that benefits a great many children without any solid evidence merely because of some objections fueled by bigotry and vested interests?

We will not allow Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi, AAP will give free healthcare for all: Satyendra Jain

Satyendra Jain, Health Minister in the Delhi government, has stated that the Aam Aadmi Party will not implement the Ayushman Bharat Yojana in the national capital. Instead, what the party is promising is free healthcare for all.

Speaking to media during his visit to the GTB hospital, the Delhi Minister told ANI, “First central government needs to provide to the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Yojana in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Around 70% of patients are coming here from Uttar Pradesh. Modi ji did nothing there. We will not differentiate between rich and poor. We will not allow this yojana as government hospital and medical check-ups are for all.”

“They just implement policies on papers, the ground reality is different. If the policy was implemented, people from Uttar Pradesh would have been treated in the state,” Jain said. “Delhi has a population of 2 crores, it will be applicable to 10 lakh people. There is no need to pick and choose. We will treat every patient in Delhi,” he added.

It is further reported that as a consequence of the flippant attitude of the Arvind Kejriwal government, people from other states can get free treatment in many private hospitals in Delhi as the central government has signed MOUs with them but citizens of Delhi cannot as the AAP government has refused to join the scheme.

It appears to be another instance of people suffering due to their elected representatives’ personal vendetta against Narendra Modi. In West Bengal, too, Mamata Banerjee had pulled out of the scheme after accusing Modi of taking credit for the scheme which is funded by the central government.

World Environment Day: Environment ministry urges people to plant trees, launches #selfiewithsapling campaign

On the eve of the World Environment Day 2019, the BJP government has launched the #selfiewithsapling initiative to encourage the people of India to plant more trees for a better tomorrow.

Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar took to Twitter to announce that former cricketer Kapil Dev and Bollywood celebrity Jackie Shroff will participate and plant a sapling in the programme organised by the government at Paryavaran Bhawan at 10:30 am on June 5 2019. Several other similar programs will be held in next 2-3 days where many more people will take part in the program, said the minister.

Encouraging citizens to participate, he urged them to plant saplings on the World Environment Day and click selfies with it and post it on the micro-blogging site with the hashtag #selfiewithsapling.

Since its inception in 1974, World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June each year to raise awareness and improve actions towards protecting the environment. The event has evolved to become a global platform for public outreach which is celebrated with great zeal in over 100 countries. The theme for every World Environment Day is decided on something that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern.

The theme for World Environment Day 2019 is “Air pollution”. In 2018, the theme was “Beat Plastic Pollution” and India served as the global host nation for the 43rd edition of the event.

Ahead of this year’s World Environment Day, the Environment Ministry had released a music video featuring Akshay Kumar and other Bollywood actors and dedicated to the #BeatAirPollution campaign.

The Ministry along with Bhamla Foundation supported by the UN has released the theme song titled ‘Hawa Aane De‘.

The music video made in accordance with this year’s environment day’s theme- ‘Air Pollution’ along with Akshay Kumar also features Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal, Kapil Sharma, Shiamak Davar, Shann, Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan.

The 3.32-minute which begins with a shot of Akshay jogging with a mask incorporates clips of factories spewing smoke, fire and people holding banners urging to stop air pollution, living up to the theme of the World Environment Day 2019

Bollywood Singer, Shaan took to Twitter to share the song on Thursday.

Last year, we had reported how a Padma awardee recipient, Ramaiah Daripalli, a resident of Reddipalle village in Khammam district of Telangana had claimed that the number of saplings he planted would have easily crossed 10 million or almost one-tree for every third citizen of the state of Telangana.

BJP’s West Bengal 2021 assembly election preparation, “Jai Maha Kali” slogans to accompany “Jai Shri Ram”

After the extraordinary gains in the recent Lok Sabha elections, confident of routing the ruling Trinamool Congress, BJP has started preparations for the impending 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal.

Amidst the ongoing row over “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, the BJP on Monday declared that it will continue campaigning in West Bengal with the slogans “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Maha Kali” until the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is ousted from power.

The three words, ‘Jai Shri Ram’ has been triggering the West Bengal Cheif Minister these days.

Attempting to hit Mamata where it has been hurting the most lately, BJP’s general secretary and West Bengal in-charge, Kailash Vijayvargiya told reporters during his first visit to the state after the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections that, “Our slogans in Bengal would be ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Maha Kali’. Bengal is the land of Maha Kali, and we need the goddess’ blessings.”

The inclusion of “Jai Maha Kali” in its list of slogans for the state comes at a time when Mamta Banerjee dubbed BJP of being a party of outsiders and criminals which does not understand the culture of Bengal.

Vijayvargiya added that the BJP’s work in Bengal will not be complete until it overthrows Mamata Banerjee. “I wonder why Mamata Banerjee always gets angry when people shout ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans. Is chanting it a crime? If so, why? We would like her government to explain,” he said, adding that his party is against the Trinamool Congress’ policies of “appeasement, terror tactics and oppression of opposition parties”.

The BJP leader also predicted that Mamata Banerjee government will not complete its full term. He said that the government will fall in advance as a large number of TMC MLAs are ready to rebel and quit. There will be en masse exodus of TMC MLAs, who can quit the party any time, he said.

The West Bengal Chief Minister who accused the BJP of creating unrest in the state by “mixing politics with religion”, incidentally, confronted people shouting the “Jai Shri Ram” slogan on at least two occasions since April.

The qualm of losing its significance in West Bengal has made Mamata oversensitive who recently took to Facebook to let the world know that she will continue to oppose ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans as they are a deliberate attempt ‘to sell hatred ideology’. In the Facebook post, Banerjee said that the BJP is using religious slogan Jai Shri Ram as their party slogan in a misconceived manner by way of mixing religion with politics.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Barrackpore constituency Arjun Singh said that the BJP has decided to send 10 lakh postcards with Jai Shri Ram written on them to Banerjee, following the angry outburst of West Bengal Chief Minister over people chanting the slogans of Jai Shri Ram. The postcards would be sent to Banerjee’s residence, added Singh.

Previously too, Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) had distributed 10 lakh postcards with ‘Jai Shri Ram’ message stamped on it addressed to West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. These postcards were made available at every post office from where people of West Bengal could have acquired it and send personalised messages to the Chief Minister.

Major jolt to Maharashtra Congress: Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil resigns, might join BJP with 10 other MLAs

In a major setback to the Congress party, former leader of opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has resigned from the party and as per media reports, he is likely to join the BJP along with 10 rebel Congress MLAs. The development comes amidst the speculations of the merger of Sharad Pawar’s NCP with the Congress party.

With assembly elections just months away, the resignation from 11 Congress MLAs including Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil might prove to be catastrophic for the fortunes of the Congress-NCP alliance in the state who are evidently battered and weakened by the Lok Sabha poll drubbing. Former minister Abdul Sattar too quit the Congress and claimed that he is going to join the BJP. He has even alleged that the remaining Congress MLAs will too join the BJP.

The depressing results in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra had set panic among the leaders of Congress and NCP. There were also reports of state Congress leaders being unhappy over seat distribution and denial of tickets due to political compulsions while being in an alliance with the NCP.

Earlier, before the Lok Sabha elections, a disgruntled Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had urged the Congress leadership to offer Ahmednagar’s ticket to his son Sujay Vikhe Patil but the party didn’t acquiesce, nor did the NCP chief Sharad Pawar agreed to yield the seat to Congress. The bitter rivalry between the Pawar family and Patil family eventually resulted in Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil resigning as Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra assembly. His son, Sujay, joined the BJP and contested the seat of Ahmednagar on a BJP ticket, winning it on 23 May. Since then speculations were rife that Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil might soon follow his son’s footsteps.

The rebellion amongst Congress MLAs was brewing for some time now. Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil was also found canvassing for support for a Shiv Sena candidate in Shirdi during the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. Former chief minister Ashok Chavan had expressed his desire to quit from the Congress party during the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.

It the claims are realised and Congress MLAs indeed resign en masse to join BJP, it might be a loss the party can never recover from. After the debacle of 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party is already in shambles.

Hey Congress, you forgot to make this one little change on your website

Now that we’ve got your attention, here’s one small change you ought to make on your website.

Congress website showing Rahul Gandhi as Amethi MP

You see, your party president Rahul Gandhi no longer represents Amethi in the Parliament. BJP’s Smriti Irani kind of gave him a run for his money and dethroned the ‘clown prince’.

Congress’ IT team needs an escape velocity of Jupiter to make changes on the website.

Delhi BJP MLA Vijender Gupta files defamation case against Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia

Just a day after BJP leader Vijender Gupta and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal were seen together at an iftar party hosted by Delhi govt, Gupta has filed a defamation case against Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi’s Deputy CM Manish Sisodia today. The BJP MLA in Delhi has accused the AAP supremo and his deputy of maligning his image after they had alleged that Gupta was part of a conspiracy to kill Kejriwal.

The defamation case was filed after Gupta had sent a legal notice to the AAP leaders asking them to apologise one week ago. “I have filed a defamation case in Patiala House court against them (Kejriwal and Sisodia) as they did not reply to my legal notice,” said the Leader of BJP in Delhi Assembly.

Gupta also tweeted to inform that his matter has been listed to be heard on 6th June at the court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate judge Samar Vishal.

Gupta has already filed a police complaint against Kejriwal and Sisodia, alleging that they were trying to falsely implicate him in an alleged conspiracy to kill Arvind Kejriwal. During the Lok Sabha polls, the Delhi CM has said in an interview that BJP may get him assassinated by his own bodyguards like former PM Indira Gandhi was killed. Kejriwal had alleged that his personal security officer (PSO) takes orders from Modi.

Reacting to this, Vijender Gupta had said that before Kejriwal was slapped by a person during a roadshow, he had asked the liaison officer to remove the security of his vehicle. He added, “The chief minister’s instruction is registered in the roznamcha (daily report). I had exposed this, hence AAP could not receive electoral gain out of it. So out of frustration, Kejriwal is saying that his PSO reports to the BJP.” Gupta had said this in a press conference, and he posted the same on Twitter with a video of the same.

Responding to this tweet, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia had alleged that BJP wants to kill the CM. He had tweeted on May 18 that the tweet of Vijender Gupta proves that BJP is receiving the daily security report of the CM, and on the basis of that BJP is conspiring to kill the CM.

Why West Bengal is in a hostage situation with no good choices

Another day, another murder of a BJP worker in Bengal.

The violence from Bengal has become so routine and so mind-numbing that people don’t seem to react any more. The TMC’s reign of terror continues from one day to the next.

The question is where is the TMC going with this? Are they crazy? To a large extent, this is true. But if you think just a bit more, you realize that there is definitely a method behind the madness.

First of all, let’s say the obvious. Mamata Banerjee knows that it’s all over for her in Bengal in 2021. I don’t just mean to say she will lose. I mean it’s over for her party. This is going to be no ordinary defeat. It will be a shattering defeat that will leave the TMC struggling to win even 50-60 seats out of 294.

The numbers tell the story and they don’t lie. The BJP’s voteshare in Bengal is 40%, which is a mere 3% behind the TMC. If you account for the fact that the BJP did not win any seats in the region around Kolkata in the last phase, it suggests that their margins in Purulia, Medinipur, etc (regions close to Jharkhand) and in North Bengal would have been huge.

Now let’s do the simple math. A 40% vote share overall. The Hindu population of Bengal is around 70%. That works out to a mind boggling conclusion : over 57% of Bengali Hindus have voted for BJP. This is Hindu consolidation on a scale perhaps unprecedented in the history of the state. With caste playing almost no role in Bengal, there are no checks to slow down this wave. By 2021, this number could rise above 80%.

It’s going to happen.

There is really nothing Mamata can do to stop this. In fact, it is really bad news for her that she has two full years before the Assembly Election. The farther away the election, the worse for her. Because the BJP is gaining voters with every single day.

This is generally the worst phase for an incumbent government to be in. Sort of like the Congress around mid-2013. If the election was in Sept 2013 say, the Congress perhaps would have not lost so badly. But it dragged on and on…..the public anger kept snowballing with every passing day. It’s a period when anti-incumbency becomes so pervasive that the government passes into a kind of unreal twilight zone. It seems they can’t get anything right. The people pull them up for literally everything they do. In fact, the government becomes a magnet for people looking to vent out all the frustrations in their lives.

By the time the election finally arrives, the incumbent is practically begging to be put out of their misery. The government of West Bengal is currently in that phase.

Mamata Banerjee knows this. She is too clever a politician not to get it. On top of that, she has made a devastating tactical error. Getting out of her car and getting three people arrested for saying Jai Shri Ram in a moment of rage is something she will regret.

Now every kid in West Bengal is out there taunting her with Jai Shri Ram slogans. Kids are making TikTok skits that show her getting angry at Jai Shri Ram slogans. That’s when you know it has gone deep into the culture. And there’s no logical comeback from the TMC for this. They are in an indefensible position.  You simply can’t find fault with people for saying Jai Shri Ram. Not possible. Especially not when 57% of Hindus are already against you.

That’s the madness. Where is the method?

There is only *one* thing Mamata Banerjee can do to turn Bengal around. The TMC has to somehow portray itself as a victim. But how?

I would say this is what is really behind the wave of violence in Bengal that has not abated even after May 23. The TMC is throwing the gauntlet before Modi and Shah, taunting them, daring them.

They are literally *trying* to get their government dismissed.

So many BJP supporters online say that Bengal should be put under President’s rule. But I have to ask: how exactly does it help in saving lives?

You can’t have President’s rule for more than 6 months. After that it can be extended for another 6 months max. During this period, you can either dissolve the Assembly or keep it in suspended animation. If it is kept in suspended animation, Mamata Banerjee just gets back all her power after a year’s break. Otherwise, there are fresh elections, Mamata Banerjee gets to play victim and perhaps has a realistic chance of winning again and ruling for five years. So does it really help save anybody?

The state is now entering a horrifying situation. There is no way TMC can win under “normal” circumstances. The incentive for the TMC is to keep making the situation worse, trying to get President’s Rule. Or at very least, push BJP workers to the point where they might go into open revolt, demanding that the powerful Central government intervene to save their lives.

And this means, there is going to be more and more violence in Bengal.

This is like IC-814 and the Kandahar hijack. Do you save the lives of the people on the hijacked plane in this instant? But what of the fact that Masood Azhar will ultimately kill more people if he is released?

This is a hostage situation. The TMC is holding BJP workers in Bengal hostage. And there are no good choices.

BSP-SP breakup: After BSP supremo Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav drops hint of SP going into the assembly by-polls alone

A day after BSP supremo Mayawati held Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav responsible for the disastrous performance of the SP-BSP Mahagathbandhan alliance in the Lok Sabha 2019 polls and hinted at going into the assembly elections alone, Akhilesh Yadav too has admitted the possibility of going into the by-polls alone if the coalition is broken.

SP chief has said that if the coalition between SP-BSP is broken, he will deeply reflect on it and Samajwadi Party will prepare for the local by-polls on 11 seats alone if the BSP breaks away from the coalition.

Earlier today, defending her decision to go solo in the upcoming by-elections in the state, BSP supremo Mayawati asserted that this hiatus in alliance with Samajwadi Party is not permanent but based on the condition that if the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav manages to be successful in his political work, BSP might again join hands with the SP. However, she also added that if Akhilesh Yadav fails, they will continue separately.

In addition, Mayawati said that her relationship with Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav will never end as they have given her immense respect.

Justifying her decision of breaking away from the coalition, Mayawati cited the political compulsions following the dismal performance by SP party in the Lok Sabha elections for them to go alone in the by-polls. Mayawati alleged that the UP base of Samajwadi Party, the ‘Yadav’ community didn’t support the party and even the formidable contenders of SP were defeated in the recently concluded general elections.

Yesterday, in a meeting with her party leaders to assess the reasons for SP-BSP alliance’s failures in the elections, Mayawati had held Akhilesh Yadav responsible for their poll rout. She also sacked election councillors of 6 states and asked for the resignation of presidents of two states for their party’s miserable show. It was in this review meeting that Mayawati declared of going into the upcoming assembly by-polls alone.

The debate around PLFS is back and here are the issues that the politicised controversy fails to consider

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) is officially out, and with it, the controversy on job growth over the last 5 years has resurfaced. At the onset, I must state that the unit level data of the survey should have been released long ago. As far as the report is concerned, we’ve enough evidence to now know for sure that it suffers from serious inconsistencies.

For starters, let it be known that PLFS and the previous Employment-Unemployment Surveys have different sampling techniques. While the EUS uses income levels for stratification, PLFS used education attainment for stratification. Therefore, any comparison of unemployment rates for these two techniques is fundamentally flawed so any article that claims unemployment is at a 45-year high is junk and you’re better off ignoring it rather than wasting your time on it.

With the PLFS report finally out, commentators can now explore the inconsistencies within the report in far greater detail. It will also be possible now to use the unit level data and adjust for the change in the sampling framework to arrive at near comparable estimates of unemployment. One such inconsistency has been in the rate of urbanization as reported by PLFS which is lower than the one provided by the NSSO in 2011-12. This suggests that post-2011 there was a decline in urbanization, but rapid urbanization is visible across the country. Another issue with the PLFS is its underestimation of the population which clearly is yet another inconsistent finding. Therefore, there are multiple problems with the PLFS, and it simply does not pass the basic smell test!

The question that is often being asked is why the government released the report if it is incorrect- but then when the report was not being released everyone was criticising the government for withholding it. Fact remains that the report is definitely problematic irrespective of the fact that it has been now officially released. This release should be welcomed as now we have the entire report with us to identify what went wrong with the sampling framework and the survey design so that we can rectify it for the future. But would I base my understanding of India’s labour market solely on the PLFS? Absolutely not!

As far as the issue of job creation in the economy is concerned, the debate has been far too politicized in the recent past and it continues to be politicized even after the elections. Such politicization will not help address the issue at hand and it would only direct our attention to the inconsequential and never-ending debate on whether there is robust job creation in the economy or not. The answer to this question is likely to be highly subjective: if you were looking for a job and got one then you’d believe in robust job creation, if not then you’d believe that there are no jobs in the economy.

But a modern economy like India does require a time series statistic that can estimate unemployment (and hence job creation) on a regular basis. This was the initial motivation for the Periodic Labour Force Survey and perhaps, there were some errors that were made in the process but now would be the time to correct for them and reconstitute a similar survey with an improved sampling framework along with a questionnaire that aims at capturing the self-employed and flexible employment contract workers in the process of estimation.

Additional questions on whether an income was earned and if yes then from what source could be instrumental in capturing the source of livelihood for a respondent. It would be difficult to quantify job creation during the last 5 years in the absence of such data, but there is macroeconomic evidence to suggest that job creation has definitely improved between 2014-18 compared to 2009-13.
