Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, constituted a four-member committee to examine the legal authority of the state legislature to implement a law prohibiting polygamy.
Though it is not legal according to the Hindu Marriage Act and the IPC, the man and his two wives can live according to the terms of the contract with mutual understanding.
As per Muslim personal law, a Muslim man can remarry without divorcing his first wife, and is allowed to keep multiple wives but a Muslim woman does not have that right.
