Set back for Congress leader: CBI seeks custodial interrogation of P Chidambaram in INX Media case

The Delhi High Court today provided interim relief from arrest to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media case till August 1. The CBI, on the other hand, has sought more time to file its response on Chidambaram’s bail plea. As per reports, the CBI has sought custodial interrogation of Chidambaram.

According to a report by Republic TV, the CBI is expected to file an affidavit in the court today seeking the custodial interrogation of the former Home and Finance Minister in the UPA government.

Both P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram are accused in the INX Media scam which involves charges of bribery and lobbying in granting foreign investments worth Rs 300 crores to INX Media. INX Media was later known as NewsX, it was owned by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea of the sensational Sheena Bora murder case.

Karti was arrested by the CBI in late February at the Chennai airport. He is accused of receiving bribes worth Rs 3.5 crores from the Mukherjee’s for granting the FIPB clearance from his father’s ministry to their company.

Indrani Mukherjee, who is now in jail for murdering her daughter, had earlier named both P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram with allegations that they had asked for bribes to the tunes of about 1 million USD. Several of the associates and suspected benamis of the Chidambaram family were also raided by the CBI and ED.

The Chidambaram family is also under the scanner in the Aircel Maxis case. In Chennai, the Income Tax department is pursuing several cases against P Chidambaram, his wife Nalini, son Karti and daughter-in-law in charges of Money Laundering.
