Rahul Gandhi repeats a long debunked lie about health insurance for Jammu and Kashmir govt employees

There is no end of lies by Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Continuing with his baseless allegations about the central government favouring industrialist Anil Ambani, today he repeated a lie which is circulating on social media for more than a week, and which has been debunked already.

Today he posted this tweet on micro-blogging site Twitter:

He has claimed that employees of the Jammu and Kashmir government have been arm-twisted to buy health insurance from Reliance General Insurance company, which is part of Anil Ambani’s Reliance group. Referring to PM Modi as BFF of Ambani, Rahul does not forget to include his lie about the Rafale deal too in the tweet.

The allegation of Reliance on health insurance being made mandatory for govt employees in J&K was made in last week of September. It was also alleged that state-run LIC was ignored in favour of Reliance.

Reacting to the allegations, the J&K government has asserted that Reliance General Insurance was selected as health insurance provider for state government employees after the company won the bid for the same. A state government has spokesperson said, “The entire bidding process has been done in a competitive, clean and transparent manner in line with all Financial Rules and Regulations as well as CVC guidelines”.

We have already reported that the J&K government invited tenders on June 1, 2018, from insurers for the scheme. The tender notice invited bids from IRDAI registered General Insurance companies, and it should be noted that LIC is not a general insurance company. So bypassing LIC, in this case, does not even arise.

It was also pointed out that before this, the scheme was being administered by ICICI Lombard for the last 4 years, another private sector general insurance company. After that contract had expired, the state government invited fresh bids, which was won by Reliance General this time.

Reacting to the allegation by Rahul Gandhi, union minister Jitendra Singh tweeted that Rahul Gandhi is lying, addressing him as “O Lord of Lies, Master of Misinformation”.

Ahead of assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi has been targeting the NDA government with one lie after another. If he finds any allegation of Modi favouring Anil Ambani, he will use it to attack the government, without bothering to check the detail of it and ignoring even if that has been debunked already.

While AAP has claimed credit for Punjab’s rise in the education sector, the timeline suggests the state’s improvement may have begun before the party came to power in 2022. The AAP government was sworn in in March 2022. But some key surveys or studies have cited the data prior to 2022. It raises the question: Does the AAP government deserve the actual credit, or are they riding on someone else's work?
