Illegal Rohingya immigrants reach as far as Ladakh, agencies suspect local support

Security agencies had earlier alerted the government about the mass movement of Rohingyas from the north-eastern states.

Security Agencies have submitted a report to the Home Ministry cautioning about a steady influx of Rohingyas in Ladakh in search for a safer place to settle. According to the agencies, 55 Rohingyas have reached Ladakh.

A probe has been initiated by the agencies to determine how the Rohingya illegal immigrants reached Ladakh. After the news trickled in, the Home ministry officials reportedly alerted all states and Union Territories saying that Rohingyas who are living in different states should keep an eye on their movement. Home Ministry sources have informed that some local people are supporting settling of the Rohingyas in Ladakh. As per security agencies, some of the Rohingyas have reached Kargil too.

In September this year, the Intelligence agencies had warned the center and the state governments about a possible mass movement of Rohingyas from the northeastern states to the southern states of India. Even Railways were warned of the movement by the Rohingyas. The RPF officers were instructed to find the Rohingya immigrants and hand them over to the local police, as they are considered to be a security risk.

So far, the Indian government has sent seven Rohingyas who had illegally entered from Myanmar in 2012 back to their own country. This was the first time that India sent illegal Rohingya intruders back to Myanmar. The Centre in collaboration with the Assam government is now preparing to send another 23 illegal Rohingya intruders back to Myanmar.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and Myanmar have agreed on the modalities of repatriation of Rohingyas back to their home from this month. Last month, the United Nations investigators had said that the Myanmar Army is prosecuting the Rohingyas with a genocidal intent which the Myanmar authorities have denied. Lakhs of Rohingyas are now believed to be living in Bangladesh. The Indian government had clarified earlier that the Rohingyas are not refugees but illegal immigrants and they need to be deported as per law.
