In 2017 the government had stopped the ration for the officers posted in peace locations and had instead started paying them Rs 117. The decision had attracted a lot of criticism. A notice was sent by a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer to the Central government seeking the reversal of the decision within 60 days of its implementation.

The government had earlier put an end to the ration-in-kind for security personnel posted in peace areas on the recommendation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission with came into effect from July 1, 2017. The government had cited the reason that it was working out costlier than free ration. According to reports, the free ration cost around Rs 100 per day while ration-in-kind cost around Rs 205 per day.
The provision regarding ration in kind for security personnel posted in peace areas was started in 1983. But initially, it was applicable only to junior officers. Later, it was extended to all ranks.
