Fake currency with face value of Rs 7 crores seized in Belagavi ahead of Karnataka elections

7 crore rupees in fake currencies has been seized in Karnataka’s Belagavi ahead of state assembly elections. According to reports, the police thinks the fake currency printing and distributing was being done for a particular candidate. They have not revealed the name of any suspected party or candidate this currency was intended to be used for.

According to reports, the police have arrested one person and registered a case in this regard. In the police raid, printing materials including ink and machinery were also seized. The seized notes reportedly include fake currencies of 2000, 500 and even the old 100 rupees notes.

Earlier in March, two persons were arrested and fake currency and printing material were seized in the same Belagavi district by the state police. The police had acted on the basis of information provided by NIA and the persons arrested reportedly had links to fake currency rackets in Malda, West Bengal. The arrests were made after a raid in Chikkodi area in Belagavi and the police sources had reportedly stated that the arrested persons were linked to Dalim Mia racket in Malda and from Malda they used to bring fake currency to Karnataka and Maharashtra. Dalim Mia was arrested in Pune in March.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has reportedly issued warning over fake currency rackets being active in the area.

Karnataka is scheduled to conduct state assembly elections in May and political parties have reportedly upped their game in luring voters by any means possible. Earlier many politicians were seen distributing cash and freebies to voters in the state. In the Belagavi area Mrinal Hebbalkar, the son of PCC women’s wing President Laxmi Hebbalkar was seen distributing pressure cookers to local voters with his mother’s face printed on them.

While AAP has claimed credit for Punjab’s rise in the education sector, the timeline suggests the state’s improvement may have begun before the party came to power in 2022. The AAP government was sworn in in March 2022. But some key surveys or studies have cited the data prior to 2022.
