A group of students claims that Hindu students in the Jamia Millia Islamia are being threatened and alleged that two Hindu students were beaten up inside the campus.
The group led a march to Gate No 7 on Tuesday at around 6 p.m. protesting against such intimidation by allegedly raising slogans such as “Jinnah premi desh chhodo” (Jinnah lovers, leave the country) and “Hinduon ko darana band karo” (stop scaring Hindus). They have claimed that ‘radical’ organizations were threatening Hindu students after the Kathua rape incident and the more recent controversy over Jinnah’s portrait in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
One of the organizers, Rahul Tiwari, claimed that such organizations were not only against Hindu students but against any student who doesn’t support their ideologies. He claims that these things have been happening for the past four weeks.
The university’s media coordinator has refused such claims of Jinnah’s portraits in the campus and alleges that the protestors were inciting violence. The Delhi Police has been requested to provide security near all the access points of the university. The police have said that it is on “high alert” and will prevent any unpleasant incident from happening.
The controversy started in AMU after Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait was noticed in the student’s union hall and has been a point of contention among student groups and the public in general. The controversy escalated into violence and has invited reactions from all corners – member of the All India Muslim personal law board, clerics, Muslim organizations and politicians. AMU has been at the centre of controversy earlier when the student’s union had protested against University’s invitation to President Ram Nath Kovind.
