Major Gogoi’s ‘arrest’: How stories have changed overnight

Yesterday, reports emerged which claimed that Major Leetul Gogoi of  “human shield” fame had been “arrested” in Kashmir. Various reports made various claims such as he was caught with a minor girl, in a “compromising position” etc. We had shown how all the reports contradicted each other.

Today, the same reports have changed their tune significantly. Starting with Outlook. Yesterday, their report had the following headline which said he was detained with a “girl”:

Today the same report has removed “girl” from the headline.

Further, the report now carries a note which clarifies that the female was not a minor, as per police

The Outlook report now also goes on to mention that Major Gogoi was “briefly” detained, indicating that he was not arrested and that he is not in police custody. A similar view was expressed by journalist Aditya Raj Kaul


Yesterday, another report from a portal called thekashmirpress.com was shared widely on social media. The report initially was titled as below:

Today the same report has changed the headline, and has dropped the word “minor” from the headline:

Once the investigation is over, it will be clear that at least one version of the news peddled by above media houses was fake, since overnight the version has changed.
