Wine jug of Jesus, Prophet Mohammad’s prayer mat, Leonardo Da Vinci’s original paintings: How scammer Monson cheated people in Kerala and was finally sentenced in a POCSO case

Fake antique dealer Monson Mavunkal was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment after a special POCSO court in Ernakulam found him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor girl. The special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case court held him guilty of sexually harassing his domestic helper’s minor daughter multiple times. Sections 376(2)(n) and 376(2)(f) of the IPC were imposed on him.

While Mavunkal has been convicted in the case of sexual assault of a minor girl, he also committed major crimes as a fake antique dealer, as he defrauded people claiming to be having many rare and antique items.

Monson Mavunkal is the infamous conman who sold antique artefacts

Monson Mavunkal is accused of allegedly swindling crores of rupees by selling fake antiquities. The Crime Branch of Kerala Police arrested him on November 6, 2021. Mavunkal had pretended to be a collector of artefacts and relics over the last several years and cheated people of over Rs 10 crore. As per a report, Mavunkal had claimed that his precious antique collection includes a throne of Tipu Sultan, the first edition of the Holy Bible, books used by Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji, the last Mughal emperor Aurangazeb and Mysore Sultan Tipu Sultan. Looking at the grandeur of the claims made by this con man, it becomes necessary to take an account of the special artefacts he allegedly possesses and fools people by making such false claims.

Monson Mavunkal deceived numerous individuals by posing as a self-proclaimed antique dealer. He employed impressive amounts of money and name-dropping of influential people to entice and ensnare his targets. Investigations later revealed that Monson’s persuasive words and demeanour were so convincing that he managed to obtain substantial sums of money, totalling crores of rupees, from unsuspecting individuals without providing any form of collateral.

However, not everyone readily accepted Monson’s claims at face value. Those who expressed scepticism found themselves invited to his heavily guarded residence in Kaloor, Kochi. To their astonishment, Monson unveiled an entire “antique” world before their eyes—a collection of “artefacts” that they had never known existed.

The display would lure anyone to buy these artefacts

Monson Mavunkal bolstered his credibility by maintaining round-the-clock security personnel and showcasing luxury cars parked in the driveway and front yard of his residence. He claimed to have received a staggering amount of Rs 2,62,600 crore in his Delhi bank account, purportedly the proceeds from selling artefacts to royalty in the Gulf countries. Monson entreated his guests to lend him money, citing the need to bypass the restrictions imposed by the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), which allegedly prohibited cash withdrawals from his account.

Exploiting his supposed connections with influential figures across various domains, Monson enticed his victims with promises of partnership in his proposed museum. Falling for his deceit, they handed over their money to him.

Allegedly, Monson managed to swindle several individuals out of Rs 10 crore using this method between June 2007 and November 2020. Frustrated by their unsuccessful attempts to recover their funds despite repeated efforts, the lenders approached the chief minister with their complaint. Investigating authorities have uncovered evidence indicating Monson’s close association with several prominent personalities, including leading actors, politicians, and senior government officials.

Monson Mavunkal’s antique list included items from the era of Jesus and Prophet Muhammad

Monson Mavunkal’s ability to blur the line between reality and mythology through his presented “antiques” should have raised suspicions. However, the meticulously crafted presentation and immersive ambience he created effectively erased doubts in the minds of many, including the well-educated and affluent, who found themselves believing in his fabrications and lost their money to him.

Among the exhibits showcased by Mavunkal were supposedly two of the 30 silver pieces Judas Iscariot received for betraying Jesus Christ, a fragment of the Holy Shroud, a stone jug attributed to the miracle of water turning into wine at Cana, Moses’ staff, Chhatrapati Shivaji’s personal copy of the Bhagavad Gita, the coronation ring of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, a purported 4,500-year-old sculpture, social reformer Sree Narayana Guru’s walking stick, a panchaloha-coated sculpture of Nandi (the sacred bull of Lord Shiva), the registration document of Mysore Palace, the throne of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sathya Sai Baba’s 1.5-kilogram golden footwear, paintings claimed to be by Raja Ravi Varma and Leonardo da Vinci, a clay lamp and prayer mat supposedly used by Prophet Muhammad, gold copies of the Quran said to have been used by Mughal emperors Akbar, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, a fragment of St. Antony’s nail, hair allegedly belonging to Mother Teresa, St. Alphonsa’s habit, a Picasso painting purportedly made of 100 kilograms of gold, a 250-kilogram emerald, and a palm-leaf manuscript containing quotes from the Quran. These were just some of the “antiques” Monson displayed to his invited guests at his residence in Kaloor.

The complainants explained that it was the impressive nature of these exhibits that led them to trust Monson. He even went so far as to claim possession of a multi-crore chemical compound used in rocket launches, further boosting their faith in him. However, the investigation by the Crime Branch has uncovered significant inconsistencies in Monson’s claims. It has been revealed that all of the antiques showcased by him were fake.

Not a single item had any documentary proof of originality

Despite claiming to possess a vast collection of valuable artefacts, Monson failed to produce any documentation to authenticate their age or ownership. When the lenders who had provided him with Rs 10 crore demanded repayment, Monson assured them that he would sell some of the antiques from his collection to settle the debt.

However, he managed to deceive them once again by claiming that he was unable to travel overseas due to a travel ban. Consequently, the creditors, believing his explanation, attempted to find potential buyers and approached the royal families in Qatar and Dubai. Unfortunately, the royals insisted on proper documentation that would verify the age and ownership of the artefacts.

When pressed for the necessary paperwork, Monson refused to provide it. Instead, he handed them an order from the state police chief, supposedly guaranteeing the security of the valuables. This conman is now sentenced in a case of sexual assault on a minor girl.

NSA Ajit Doval lauds Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, says India would not have been partitioned if he had been alive

On Saturday, June 17, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval said that if Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had been alive, India would not have been partitioned. He added that Netaji would not have settled for anything less than complete freedom and independence.

NSA Doval was speaking at the first Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Memorial lecture in Delhi. The event was hosted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

Ajit Doval stated, “The idea that came to his (Subhas Chandra Bose’s) mind was ‘I will fight the British, I will not beg for freedom. It is my right, and I will have to get it’. India would not have been partitioned in Subhas Bose was there. Jinnah said I can accept only one leader, and that is Subhas Bose”.

NSA Ajit Doval hails Subhas Chandra Bose for showing the audacity to challenge MK Gandhi

During his address, Doval lauded Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s valour and audaciousness saying that he had courage throughout his life. He hailed Bose’s tenacity in his commitment to the country. Doval hailed Subhas Chandra Bose for showing the audacity to challenge MK Gandhi.

“I am not saying good or bad, but there are very few parallels in Indian history and the world history of people who had the audacity to sail against the current and not an easy current,” Ajit Doval said.

Doval talked about when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi backed Pattabhi Sitharamayya to become Congress President contesting against Subhash Chandra Bose. He recalled that despite having overwhelming support, Bose decided to resign due to his respect for Gandhi.

“But Gandhi was at the prime of his political career. When Gandhi wanted to support Pattabhi Sithamrayya to become Congress president and Subhash Bose had overwhelming support and the majority of people. But then he resigned and when he came out of the Congress he started his struggle afresh. He decided to escape from India. Getting into the attire of Afghan, quite difficult for a Bengali to do, he left for Kabul. He then moved to Russia, Germany where he met (Adolf) Hitler. He wasn’t very comfortable with his policies; he got 4000 Indians released who were jailed in Germany by Hitler. He then formed the Indian National Army,” Doval said.

NSA Ajit Doval stated when former British Prime Minister Clement Atlee, under whom the Indian Independence Act was signed, came to India in 1956, he stayed at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. He added that the ideas of nationalism disseminated by Bose scared the British even after his death.

“The then Governor asked Atlee why the British agreed to Independence in 1947 when there was no pressure. Gandhi had given up on the Quit India movement in 1942. There was no immediate pressure to leave. Just see how history has been unkind to Netaji. Atlee replied that it was because of Netaji. He said even though Netaji had died in 1945 in a plane crash in Taipei. Even after his death, they were afraid of the ideas of nationalism that it created, many Indians would have gone down that path,” the National Security Advisor said.

Doval further delved into Netaji Bose’s religious side as he said that Bose had a secular outlook but deep down he was a highly religious person.

“He believed in a strong economic framework for India, he supported planning. He was a highly religious man, and always carried Gita with him. Bose was secular in his outlook, but deep inside he was pious and devoted and did not make a display out of it,” Doval said.

Subhas Chandra Bose and his ouster from the Congress

Bose had been elected as the president in the Haripura session of Congress in 1938. Bose had been advocating opposition to the British government’s federal scheme as per the Government of India Act 1935. He had been proposing a mass movement for ‘Purna Swaraj’, unlike other elements within the party which were in favour of accepting the new concessions from the British. However, the old guard, including Mahatma Gandhi, refused to heed his words. Therefore he contested for re-election to the presidency of the next annual Congress session that was to be held in Tripuri.

Unlike today’s Congress party, there were real elections for the post of president during that time. He won against Gandhi’s candidate Pattabhi Sitarammayya (1,575 to 1,376 votes). In response, the entire CWC (Congress working committee) resigned. Thereafter, he was shunted out of the Congress party because he had the charisma and ability to win an election against the wishes of Mahatma Gandhi.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose mysteriously disappeared after a Japanese plane allegedly carrying him crashed in Taiwan on 18th August 1945. It is believed he died of third-degree burns. However, it was never confirmed.

Anti-India Islamist and leftist groups plan protests during PM Modi’s US visit, prepare “Modi Not Welcome,” “Save India from Hindu Supremacy” banners

Several Islamist and anti-India groups have planned protests during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming USA visit. According to reports, Indian American Muslim Council and other anti-India organisations have planned to protest and wave banners stating “Save India from Hindu Supremacy” and “Modi Not Welcome” during the action-packed state visit of PM Modi from June 20 to 23.

Several organisations including the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), Peace Action, Veterans for Peace, and Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition have planned to orchestrate a protest outside the White House on the 22nd of June. PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Biden on that day in Washington DC on that day.

They have assembled banners that would state “Modi Not Welcome” and “Save India from Hindu Supremacy,” according to Reuters.

Apart from a protest outside the White House, these organisations have planned another protest in New York. To garner eyeballs, the protestors have tried to use PM Modi’s 2019 “Howdy Modi” event in which Indian Prime Minister and then-U.S. President Donald Trump addressed a large gathering in Houston, Texas. They have named their show, “Howdy Democracy”.

Further, two other rabid anti-India organisations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, will screen the highly controversial BBC documentary. Notably, it is a ‘propaganda piece’ that tried to undermine the Indian Judiciary’s verdict regarding the 2002 Gujarat riots and peddle its politically driven falsehoods. The BBC documentary was banned by the government in India for the same reason.

Now, both these organisations have invited their sympathisers including ideologically coherent policymakers, journalists, and analysts for the next week’s screening. They have planned to screen the BBC documentary just two days ahead of PM Modi’s official state visit, hosted by President Joe Biden.

Human Rights Watch’s Asia Division director Elaine Pearson wrote a letter to Biden urging the White House to raise concerns, both publicly and privately, about these so-called Human Rights issues in India during Modi’s visit.

As per Reuters, in her letter, she said, “We strongly urge you to use your meetings with Prime Minister Modi to urge Modi to move his government and his party in a different direction.” However, it is unlikely that Biden will raise anything like that during the meeting. Donald Camp, a former State Department official and part of the Washington think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that Washington would be reluctant to raise human rights issues to make the trip successful for both sides.

Several international organisations, including institutions under the US government, have released ‘reports’ accusing India of trampling the human rights of Muslims. But it is unlikely that president Biden will mention it during his high-profile meeting with PM Modi where several important matters will be discussed.

Despite being sympathetic to the falsehoods of these Islamists and anti-India organisations, Washington has been courting vibrant democratic India as it realises that growing India is the only counter to China, their long-term rival. Interestingly, India recently declined United States’ purported invitation to join the NATO-plus five grouping.

During this visit, PM Modi will address the joint session of the US Congress and with this, he will become the first Indian PM to address US Parliament twice. A state dinner also has been planned for his honour.

It is important to note that several top American lawmakers have also released a series of video messages to welcome PM Modi for his Official State Visit to the US. All of them have unequivocally highlighted that they are eagerly looking forward to his address at the Joint Meeting of the Congress.

West Bengal: BJP and TMC workers clash in Coochbehar ahead of Panchayat polls, convoy of Union Minister Nishith Pramanik attacked

On Saturday (June 17), a scuffle broke out between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party workers and the BJP in the Dinhata area in the Coochbehar district of West Bengal.

As per reports, the clash took place at the Sahebganj Block Development Office (BDO) when the scrutiny of nomination papers was underway. In the meantime, the convoy of BJP MLA Sukumar Roy and Minister of State of Home Affairs Nishith Pramanik was attacked.

The latter was also stopped from entering the BDO office by the police under the pretext of Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The development comes amid reports of violence in the State ahead of the Panchayat polls.

In a viral video, Union Minister Nishith Pramanik was heard saying, “We are not being allowed to go to the BDO office and you can hear the TMC goons sloganeering from inside the building. Section 144 seems to be only applicable to us. The cops are not stopping the TMC goons, who are raising slogans. Shameless.”

“A bomb was hurled at the car of Nisith Pramanik, Police is literally helpless…If a minister can be attacked like that, we can imagine what the situation in West Bengal must be,” BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar informed the media.

Mamata’s TMC unleashes ‘Khela’ of violence against Opposition

Ahead of the Panchayat polls, the State of West Bengal is witnessing an orgy of political violence. TMC workers have created an atmosphere of chaos & unrest since June 9. So far, at least 3 people have lost their lives.

A Congress worker named Fulchand Sheik was shot dead on the night of June 9 at his residence in Khargram in Murshidabad district. The police arrested two accused, identified as Safique Sheikh and Kaber Sheikh, on June 10. Both of them are said to be the workers of the Trinamool Congress party.

On June 15, a CPI (M) worker named Mansur Alam was killed after being allegedly fired upon by members of the ruling TMC party. The incident took place in Chopra community development block in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal.

Two other CPI(M) workers were critically injured in the attack. They were rushed to the Islampur sub-district hospital. Members of the ruling Trinamool Congres and the Islamist party ‘Indian Secular Front’ (ISF) clashed several times in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district between June 13 and June 15.

Stones and bombs were hurled at each other by both political groups. ISF has accused the Trinamool Congress of preventing their candidates from filing nomination papers. One worker of the party, identified as Mohammad Mohiuddin Molla, was killed on June 15, 2023.

The ongoing violence in West Bengal is part of the ruling dispensation’s playbook to intimidate the Opposition parties. The State has witnessed similar cases during the infamous 2021 Vidhan Sabha election and the 2022 civic body polls.

WB Panchayat poll violence: Congress leader Ramzan Sheikh’s father murdered, party accuses TMC goons for the attack

On Thursday, June 15, a fresh spate of political violence broke out in West Bengal as the father of a Congress leader was brutally killed in the Hajbibidanga village in Murshidabad district in the state. The Congress has blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for the incident.

The victim identified as Meherul Sheikh is the father of local Congress leader Ramzan Sheikh who has filed his nomination for the upcoming West Bengal panchayat elections.

According to reports, a group of Trinamool members stormed into the residence of Congress candidate Ramzan Sheikh armed with guns and country-made bombs but they couldn’t find Ramzan. After this, they assaulted Maharulla Sheikh, the candidate’s father.

The family members of the victim told the media that Mehrul Sheikh was sitting at a tea stall when a group of miscreants attacked him.

It is being said that the assault was carried out in vengeance for the murder of Trinamool Congress leader Mozammel Sheikh.

“Around 9 pm on Thursday, Trinamool Congress leader Mozammel Sheikh was accosted by unidentified assailants and shot while he was campaigning. He was knocked to the ground first and then shot, after which his assailants fled,” The Telegraph quoted a source as saying.

He added that Mozammel Sheikh was rushed to the Nabagram rural hospital in the district, where he was declared dead.

“Once the news of his death reached Trinamool workers, they got together and attacked the home of the Congress candidate without much evidence, ostensibly owing to the fierce Congress-Trinamool rivalry in the area,” the source added.

This year’s Panchayat elections are set for July 8, and the State of West Bengal, which has a history of political violence, is once again going through a wave of unrest. Since the start of the submission of election nominations, goons linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party have sparked disruption and unrest.

In the latest, Union State Minister Nisith Pramanik and BJP MLA Sukumar Roy’s car was allegedly attacked in Sahebganj in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district on Saturday. Pramanik said an “arrow was aimed at our vehicle. Bombs are being lobbed”. “BJP candidates’ documents were snatched, and they were beaten in front of the police. We have videos and photos,” he added.

Prior to this, at least 3 people had lost their lives.

As Delhi govt launches drive to scrap old vehicles, citizens accuse ‘scrapping mafia’ and officials of impounding cars without notice from private properties

In March of this year, the Delhi government, led by CM Arvind Kejriwal, initiated a campaign to impound end-of-life vehicles (ELV) or simply overage vehicles plying on roads or parked in private spaces. This, however, has become a concern for many citizens of the national capital, as they have alleged that their vehicles have been towed away and shifted to scrapyards without prior notice by Delhi Transport Department officials and scrapping agencies.

The campaign was launched on March 29, of this year, in view of the 2014 order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and a 2018 Supreme Court order stating that vehicles older than 15 years should be deregistered and barred from operating in the national capital region to combat pollution.

Recently, many people opened up about their vehicles being impounded by the authorities despite having valid registration certificates (RCs) and in many cases without informing them. As a part of its “Old Car Not Bekaar” campaign, Times Group’s Mirror Now spoke to several persons, who alleged that their vehicles were taken away even from gated societies without any prior notice despite having valid registration certificates and fitness certificates. Calling it a ‘scrapping mafia’, they even alleged impounded vehicles are being returned by the scrapping agencies and transport officials in exchange for money.

In one of the episodes, Mirror Now talked to a Supreme Court lawyer and a corporate employee who alleged that the Delhi government’s campaign is mired in corruption involving the scrap mafias. They claimed that their vehicles were impounded even after having valid RCs.

“We are victims of the scrap mafia work which is going on in Delhi in the name of NGT and Supreme Court order. This is a clear case of extortion whereby they are picking up even the vehicles which have valid RCs and fitness certificates. My vehicle had valid registration for the next five years,” Supreme Court lawyer Shanta Kumar Mahale said.

He further said that the vehicles are being forcefully taken away even from gated societies and private properties. Mahale further claimed that in the society where he resides, more than 18 to 20 vehicles were impounded in a single day. Alleging a “misuse” of the NGT and Supreme Court orders, Mahale said that the authorities are not considering the valid RCs and that the vehicles are parked on private land in gated societies. “They did not even allow us to take away our belongings,” Mahale said.

MCD officials hand-in-glove with ELV scrapping “mafia”

Moreover, Advocate Mahale alleged that one scrapping agency named Pineview is a “scrapping mafia” and is hand-in-glove with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials.

“After my vehicle was illegally taken away, I had approached the MCD South Shahdara zone officials, I met the assistant commissioner, and deputy commissioner there. I had given it in the writing about my vehicle being taken away, that it was not moving but parked. My plea was not heard. My written complaint and those of my co-residents didn’t matter to them. After five-six visits to the assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner south Shahdara office, they asked me to contact Pineview (the ELV scrapping agency),” Mahale said.

The Supreme Court lawyer claimed that he was asked to follow the indications given by Pineview and then it is up to them to release the vehicle. Shanta Kumar Mahale further alleged that when he visited the Pineview office to get his vehicle released, he was asked to pay Rs 15,000.

“I was completely left at the mercy of Pineview. When I went to their office, they said that we can release your vehicle but you will have to pay Rs 15,000 in cash and we will not give any receipt. This is simply the margin we pay to the MCD and you know some kind of taxes that we do,” Mahale claimed.

He added that the agency was reluctant to provide a receipt in exchange for the payment if they are paying some taxes. He also claimed to have a witness of the incident and video evidence. Mahale also said that he found his vehicle in a damaged state after paying the amount asked. “I noticed that the front glass and fuel were stolen,” Mahale claimed.

Another Supreme Court lawyer said that his vehicle was towed away on February 27, when he was arguing a matter in Supreme Court. Some people he called “goondas” came to his house, and handed a receipt to his wife saying that this vehicle has to be taken away. They did not even wait for him to come back and take his important case files kept inside the car.

Similar allegations are being made by many others on social media. Advocate Amit Rajora of the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court has posted several tweets alleging illegalities by Pineview and govt officials. “Pinview technology pvt ltd is fraud scrapping company and MCD is involved in this fraud. its scam of crores of rupees there is no SOP of Pineview company,” he alleged in one tweet.

Earlier in April, an FIR was registered against MCD’s Additional Commissioner and Bharat Scrap Facility, another scrapping agency, for taking away vehicles for scrapping without following proper procedure.

He also posted police complaints the car owners have filed accusing the scrapping company and transport officials of theft.

The affected people opined that the authorities do not have the right to enter private properties and take away the vehicles. The NGT order only pertains to ELVs parked in public spaces.

Reacting to the issue, BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri alleged that this is a scam and the vehicles of Delhi people are being forcibly taken away and sold in other states.

A detailed review of Adipurush: 3 hours of uncouth dialogues, zero logic, copying Hollywood and cringe scenes

Let’s get straight to the point – Adipurush is a gross misinterpretation of the revered Hindu Mahakavya Ramayana, authored by Valmiki Ji. Driven by personal ambition and hubris, director Om Raut has served an appalling concoction of video-gamified, perverted, and nonsensically jarring mockery of Ramayana, a sacred epic cherished by billions of Hindus worldwide.

This ill-conceived adaptation will undoubtedly go down as one of the most horrendous attempts at retelling Ramayana. The resulting version is as repugnant and repulsive as the demonic creatures of Lanka depicted in the movie.

It is a Himalayan task to find positive aspects in Adipurush

In an otherwise excruciating 3-hour watch, the movie offers rare moments of positivity that cannot be denied. Among them, its music and background score stand out undeniably. From the soul-stirring chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram Raja Ram’ to the powerful resonance of ‘Shivoham,’ the music momentarily uplifts the viewing experience, evoking a profound sense of pride and creating an electrifying sensation.

Kriti Sanon as Mata Janki has delivered few impactful dialogues but other than that there is hardly anything that is compelling to watch or strike the right emotional chords with the audiences.

Storyline

On the face of it, the makers have followed the storyline of Ramayana right from the episode of Ravana abducting Jaanki up to Ravan’s Vadh. However, in a real sense, the film has recklessly amended Valmiki Ji’s Ramayana to cater to their own whims and fancies. The story suffers from a lack of cohesive connections, with abrupt transitions shifting the plot from one scene to another.

The movie “Adipurush” barely scratches the surface of sub-plots and hastily moves on without fully developing them or establishing connections to the next plot or the overarching storyline.

A prime example of this is Adipurush’s superficial treatment of Brahma ji’s boon to Ravana. The movie fails to delve deeper into the intricacies of the boon, which included everything and everyone except humans. Ravana, in his arrogance, dismisses the potential threat posed by ordinary humans, mistakenly believing that humans are incapable of harming him, let alone killing him.

Similarly, the movie completely omits how Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram (Raghav here) finds out about Ravana’s fatal flaw. No, Vibhishan doesn’t spell out to Raghav that the vulnerability lies within Ravana’s nabhi (navel). Raghav on his own gets enlightened and fires an arrow at Ravana’s navel.

Diverging from the conventional narratives, here in Adipurush, it is Mata Sabri who stumbles upon Raghav, rather than the other way around. In a hurried manner, she commits self-immolation and transforms into a divine angel guiding Raghav in determining his subsequent path.

Deconstructing Adipurush: Colossal flaws, gaping holes

Addressing the glaring issues, it is impossible to overlook the abysmal quality of VFX, repugnant dressing, hairstyle, and the appalling dialogues in Adipurush. One can count the real humans shown in Adipurush on fingertips. Interestingly, the appearance of the tattooed Indrajeet resembled that of a mermaid in water, although this perception may be subjective to my personal opinion alone.

The scarcity of actual human characters is striking, as the majority of the cast is composed entirely of digitally rendered creations through the implementation of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI).

During the second half, which unfolds in Lanka, the background is engulfed in darkness, exuding an atmosphere of perpetual doom and gloom. There is hardly anything noticeable happening in Lanka in the daytime.

Further, the animated creatures are cheap copies compiled from Hollywood movies, all in the name of making it appealing to Gen Z audiences – the ‘Marvel’-isation of Ramayana and that too in the worst manner possible. This is really problematic and even ridiculous as Ravana has deliberately been given the striking similarity with Thor, the Norse God of Thunder.

During various intense fight sequences and beyond, Ravana wields a powerful blue light sword – somewhat similar to a lightsaber in the Star Wars universe. The combined outcome of Thor’s hammer striking lightning and blue light sword, decimate Vanar Sena and leave every character hapless.

Now, the blue colour symbolizes calmness (Shitalta), tranquillity, and purity akin to the serene qualities embodied by water. All of these qualities can’t be attributed to Ravana, even in his hagiographic descriptions, but Adipurush makers have.

In contrast to Ravana, the reddish-orange colour, which symbolises anger, is attributed to Raghav.

Writing and dialogues

Apparently, Manoj Muntashir has written the dialogues of Adipurush and this seems to be the worst performance in his career. The writing appears to have attempted to recreate a new Ramayana altogether, disregarding the deeply revered names of our ancestors. Adipurush’s dialogue notably lacks references to the sacred names of Prabhu Shri Ram, Mata Sita, Laxman ji, and Hanuman ji.

Surprisingly, even during the construction of the iconic Ram Setu bridge, the omission of Prabhu Shri Ram’s name on the stones is evident. In place of the heartening chants of “Jai Shri Ram,” an alternative phrase, “Jaha Raghav waha Vijay,” has been coined, seemingly aiming to leave their own artistic mark.

There are many uncouth dialogues that shouldn’t have been imagined in the first place while writing down dialogues for Hindu Mahakavya like Ramayana. It’s appalling that these dialogues even made it to the final cut and were not struck out by the Censor Board considering the sensibilities of the public.

There are characters using street-level language like “Bete”, “Tere Baap ki Jali” and ”Bua ka Bagicha” among others. Let me include a few of these dialogues so that you can decide on your own whether they deserve to be thought of in the same breath as the Hindu epic Ramayana or not.

This cringe tapori language seems to be nothing but a desperate attempt to please audiences and cheap attempts to garner a few claps from an audience addicted to Insta reels.

As mentioned earlier, the writing of the sub-plots has been tampered with in an attempt to infuse a distinct flavour. It remains unclear whether the creators were apprehensive about potential plagiarism concerns from Valmiki Ji or Hindu devotees by prominently featuring Prabhu Ram’s name or adhering to the original plot.

The love between Shri Ram and Maa Sita was not spared either. It had to suffer the brutal treatment of Karan Joharish Bollywoodisation. Here, Raghav and Janki, don’t interact or share pleasantries but are just present in artificially created natural scenery that keeps changing to show unreal flora that is probably found nowhere in Bharat or even Sri Lanka.

The interactions within the film are notably lacking in depth, with minimal dialogue exchanges that seem rushed, leaving little room for meaningful exploration. The absence of substantial interactions deprives the scenes of a sense of poise and tranquillity, failing to capture the essence of stillness and depth that could have enriched the overall experience.

Acting and character arc

In Adipurush, the character of Raghav diverges significantly from the traditional portrayal of Shri Ram in Hindu Janmanas and other accounts. Instead of embodying the expected nobility, Raghav is portrayed as lacking in grace and charm. Prabhas’ performance fails to capture the poised and serene qualities that define Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram. The absence of a radiant and calm demeanour in the portrayal is a notable flaw.

It appears that the actor has been unable to shed the remnants of his Bahubali persona, as he only appears truly composed and fittingly portrayed during moments of battle or heightened intensity. However, it’s important to note that in reality, Shri Ram’s life encompassed far more than just these fleeting instances of anger. His character was defined by a multitude of virtues and experiences, which unfortunately do not shine through in the portrayal.

Since the majority of the characters are CGI/VFX created, hoping for sharp facial expressions was only our fault. But even, human characters like Laxman ji (Shesh here) and Vibhishan among others, have done very disappointing acting performances.

Ironically, Ravana has an interesting character arc swinging between narcissistic and psychotic. In normal scenes, he is the tallest and strongest character, barring “flash-mood” Indrajeet. As usual, Saif Ali Khan has shown his peculiar walk during the Ashok Vatica scene and other times as well.

Absolute mockery of Gods and major omissions

Here is an apt example of the shallow treatment Adipurush has given to many scenes and treated Hanuman ji and others with utter contempt. During Raghav and Shesh’s initial encounter with Bajrang (not even referred to as Bajrang Bali), the interaction between Bajrang and Shesh raises doubts. The questions posed to Bajrang appear trivial and insignificant, undermining his wisdom. This portrayal comes across as a mockery of Hanuman ji, who is revered for bestowing the blessings of Vidhya Buddhi (intellectual prowess).

Having answered Shesh’s aptitude questions, Bajrang and Raghav immediately recognize each other, how? no explanation, none at all. On top of that, Raghav hugs and says to Bajrang, “Kya jaroorat thi is natak ki”.

Further, there are many scenes where Bajrang finds it astonishing to be in the fix to get things done. The depiction was somewhat similar to Dhamal’s Adi, who in self-pity asks why I step affront in such situations.

Surprisingly, Hanuman ji does not display the immense power often attributed to him, and similarly, Shri Ram and his allies appear to lack their expected prowess. Indrajeet and Kumbhakarna easily overpower Bajrang, Raghav, Shesh, and Sugreev in a straightforward fight scene towards the end.

Furthermore, Adipurush shows a lack of respect toward the revered Rishis and Munnis. In contrast to the original story, where Prabhu Ram receives assistance from sages during his search for Maa Sita, the film completely omits their presence. The absence of serene hermitages and humble abodes, like Rishi’s kuti, is striking. Instead, generic caves are used as a substitute, detracting from the authentic atmosphere that these sacred spaces create.

The mention of Nal and Neel is conspicuously absent, and the sacrifice of Jatayu fails to evoke any emotional impact and there is no interaction between Jatayu and Raghav. Rather than dying Jatayu tells Raghav about Janki’s abduction and which direction to move in, Raghav is seen within visible range when Ravana is abducting Janki. Raghav along with Shesh doesn’t fire an arrow or act but runs like a hapless husband unable to save his wife.

In one scene, Ravana recites partial Shiv Tandav Stotram in a crude manner.

There is a notable absence of references to Ram ji invoking Bhagwan Mahadev or performing any Puja or conducting religious rituals.

Another problematic aspect is that, in the midst of the battle, Ram ji is depicted as shedding tears and looking toward the sky, seemingly seeking help from above.

Needless experiment

There is another completely useless alteration. Pushpak Viman is transformed into a living creature and that too an ugly one. Ravana feeds this bat-shaped Viman large chunks of meat and creates a disturbing image. Ironically, this Pushpak Viman is not fully under control in Lanka and had to be tamed and leashed in one scene.

Talking about costumes, attires, and set locations is completely a waste of time as the makers paid no heed to that. Ravana wears T-shirts, Capes; everyone is using leathered body armour. Lanka is not made of Gold but is black in colour with golden linings. To give it a sassy look to make it ‘appealing’ basically every Lankan shape-shifting or normal person had tattoos and funky hairstyles.

All in all, Adipurush is an abomination. In the want of personal glory and artistic arrogance — “I can redefine Ramayana for Gen Z by altering it at will”, the director Om Raut has served a disgusting porridge that should be avoided at all costs.

Nepal: Former Deputy PM, former Home Minister and 14 others sent to judicial custody in the scam of sending Nepalese citizens abroad as Bhutanese refugees

The Kathmandu district court on Friday sent 16 defendants including a former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister to judicial custody in a fake Bhutanese refugee scam.

The court made the preliminary verdict over the case and sent Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former Deputy Prime Minister, and Bal Krishna Khand, former Home Minister to jail thus making it one of the high-profile cases of Nepal. A single bench of Justice Prem Prasad Neupane delivered the verdict late on Friday evening passing the court hours following the conclusion of a marathon detention hearing that went on for nearly a fortnight.

“16 out of the 18 indicted on the charge of their involvement in the refugee scam has been sent to judicial custody. All of them have been sent to the Sundhara-based central jail,” Deepak Dahal, information officer at the Kathmandu District Court told ANI over the phone.

Two of the indicted in the case to be released on bail are Tanka Kumar Gurung and Laxmi Maharjan who have been slapped with the amount of NRs 1 million and half a million Nepali rupees, respectively.

“All the defendants will remain in judicial custody until the court delivers a verdict over the case. However, they can appeal with at high court against their latest verdict and seek release on bail,” Dahal added.

The District Attorney Office Kathmandu on May 24 filed criminal cases at the District Court Kathmandu against 30 individuals allegedly involved in the refugee scam.

They have been charged with four types of crimes- treason, organized crime, fraud and forgery. The accused have been charge-sheeted for collecting Nrs. 288.17 million from 115 victims ranging from Nrs. 200,000 to Nrs. 4.8 million each-promising to send them to the US in the guise of Bhutanese refugees.

According to the charge sheet of the attorney’s office, the accused had been indicted for crimes against the state as they were involved in offences provisioned in sections 51 (1) and 2 (a) of the Criminal Code Act-2017.

As per the section, nobody should act against national interest or encourage others to do so and nobody should act in a way that impairs the country’s image internationally.

The charge sheet said that their acts proved to be an offence against the state as turning Nepalis into Bhutanese refugees impaired Nepal’s international image and prestige. The prosecutor had sought punishment as per section 51 (4a) of the Criminal Code Act-2017 for all the accused.

Former Home Minister and opposition CPN-UML leader Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, former speaker Ang Tawa Sherpa, and former home secretary Tek Narayan Pandey also are now sent to jail. Amongst those in judicial custody includes exiled Bhutanese refugee leader Tek Nath Rizal.

Others arrested over the case are: Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Tanka Kumar Gurung, Sandesh Gurung, Sagar Rai, Sandeep Rayamajhi (Son of Top Bahadur Rayamajhi), Indrajit Rai, Bal Krishna Khand’s personal secretary Narendra KC, Ram Sharan KC, Govinda Chaudhary and Shamsher Miya

The Kathmandu District Court has issued arrest warrants for former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa’s son Prateek, Indrajit Rai’s son Niraj and other intermediaries.

The case of a fake Bhutanese refugee scam came to the limelight in April after the publication of an investigative piece through the grant of the Center for Investigative Journalism- Nepal. With mounting pressure, the incumbent Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha directed Police bodies to carry out the investigation.

The scam slowly came to understanding after Police apprehended Tek Narayan Pandey, the incumbent Secretary at Vice President’s Office and former Home Secretary. Data and documents retrieved from the possession of Pandey busted the scam web which has been completed for the first phase.

The data and documents retrieved by Police during the investigation exposed how Nepalis were swindled out of millions of rupees in return for sending them to the United States as Bhutanese refugees. A total of 106 victims have registered complaints to the police noting that the fraudsters fleeced over Rs 232.5 million from them over different times.

The case further came into the limelight when an arrest warrant was issued against chief opposition CPN-UML Secretary Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, his (Top Bahadur) son Sandeep and Prateek Thapa, the son of former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa.

A police investigation has unearthed the facts that government officials have been helping the racketeers to obtain the fake document from the Home Ministry which worked as certification for them to send Nepali nationals as Bhutanese refugees to the US.

On June 14, 2022, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Nepal Police launched an investigation into a criminal group involved in a case of fraud. The group had allegedly been scamming people for years by promising to send them to the US as Bhutanese refugees.

The government action was in response to a case filed by the victims at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority against the group a few months earlier. The case was brought to the Kathmandu Valley Crime Division only in June 2022 after which the investigation was launched.

The group has allegedly swindled over 875 people from different places in Nepal of millions of rupees. The Police investigation found suspects collecting between one to five million Nepali rupees per head promising to send them to the US as Bhutanese refugees.

After 1990, Nepal saw a huge influx of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese nationals who were expelled from their country by the Bhutanese government in a massive ethnic cleansing drive.

The refugees were kept in several refugee camps in Morang and Jhapa districts. After a series of bilateral talks between Nepal and Bhutan failed, the international community led by the UN refugee agency started resettling the refugees in third countries, mostly in the US and Europe.

Between 2007 and 2016, the UNHCR helped resettle more than 113,500 Bhutanese refugees in eight countries in one of the largest resettlement programs globally.

Nepal’s Home Ministry had formed a task force to find out the ways for remaining Bhutanese refugees who were denied resettlement. The investigative report by CIJ disclosed the infiltration by a government official- Rai in the report where he managed to manipulate the number of “left out” refugees for resettlement.

AIMPLB says UCC not needed, nobody can alter Muslim laws, Maulana Tauqeer Raza warns the govt over demolition of illegal mazars

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has raised serious objections to the idea of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. The Law Commission has recently invited suggestions from the public regarding the long-promised law. However, according to AIMPLB, this is a waste of resources.

Notably, the UCC calls for the formulation of one law for India, which would be applicable to all religious communities in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. It has been an essential part of the election manifesto of the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party government over the past many years.

The organization also termed the UCC unnecessary and described it as impractical and dangerous. Its spokesperson Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas stated that the country’s diversity is its identity and it should not be tampered with.

The board also dragged the tribal groups into their argument and claimed the latter’s unique privileges will also get terminated as a result of the law. Ilyas contended that the AIMPLB’s guidelines originated from the Quran, and even Muslims are not permitted to alter them. “Then could the government pass any law to interfere with it,” he asked.

He asserted that other faiths in the nation have similar worries and cautioned the administration against the same. More importantly, he threatened to incite riots across the country if the law ever comes into effect.

The president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, has also voiced his discontent against the idea of UCC and the destruction of unauthorized or illegal Mazars (Islamic shrines). He declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party should first destroy temples before discussing Muslim shrines.

He added that the government shouldn’t put their patience to the test and threatened reaction against the action. He alleged that a plot is underway to repeat the demolition drive presently underway in Uttarakhand, across the whole country. He announced that if the bulldozers continue to destroy illegal shrines, Muslims will reach the state to demonstrate against the government.

The Muslim leader from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh even labelled love jihad as ‘saffron trap.’ He stated, “We have put a ban in place that would result in the boycott of both the man and his family if he marries a Hindu female.” He maintained that we have kept our youth in check by pacifying them.

He pointed out, “We are also not wearing bangles,” and asserted that all places of worship constructed prior to 1921 are legitimate while referring to The Place of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

People who think they understand entire Ramayana are fools; they should understand Adipurush is just a part of Ramayana: Director Om Raut

The movie ‘Adipurush,’ a cinematic adaptation of the epic ‘Ramayana,’ has stirred up controversy ever since its theatrical release on June 16, 2023. While the movie is accused of misrepresenting the story of Ramayana with inappropriate character design, storyline, dialogues etc, the makers of the movie are staunchly defending it. In a recent interview, director Om Raut made a statement suggesting that individuals criticising the movie are misguided.

In an interview with Republic World, Om Raut said, “Ramayana is so big that it is impossible for anyone to understand it. If someone is saying that he or she understands Ramayana, either they are fools or they are lying. The Ramayana that we have seen on TV before, is something that I have grown up watching in the big format. We can’t call it a film (Ramayan). That is why we are calling it Adipurush because it is a section within the Ramayana. This is a Yuddh Kaand which is the chapter of war in Ramayana, which we are trying to show and it is just a small part of that war chapter.”

When asked if the film is only for practising Hindus, Raut said, “This film is for every living being. The way of Ram is Ramayan. It is for everyone. Whatever little I have learned about Ramayan, I have tried to portray it on celluloid. If you make a kid draw a painting for Prabhu Shri Ram, it may look the best but the spirituality that the kid has, that is something I will appreciate.”

He further said, “You need that validation as a filmmaker. You need to know that there are so many people that are liking your work. I was going through the ticketing websites and for tomorrow all the charts are looking orange which means the advances for tomorrow are very high. Advances for Sunday and Monday also are very high, which means people are actually liking it. The type of responses we are getting from cinema halls, the way people are cheering and chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram,’ really makes me feel very happy.”

He added, “I am very happy to say that we are going for an unprecedented number of day 1 of the global box office. Definitely, it is a huge number in India but when you look at the global box office, it is a very large number. What I am told is ‘Om you will be surprised.”

The movie ‘Adipurush’ witnessed an unprecedented opening day at the box office, setting new records for earnings. However, alongside its commercial success, the film has also faced an escalating controversy. Critics have labelled the film’s dialogues as “tapori” or street-smart, with even the portrayal of characters like Ravana and Indrajit being criticized as lacking depth. This departure from expectations has surprised audiences, given that renowned writer Manoj Muntashir penned the script for director Om Raut’s ‘Adipurush’. Nonetheless, Manoj has defended his approach, asserting that he intentionally crafted relatable dialogues to connect with the audience.
