Pakistan’s Ahmad Nawaz forced to resign as President of Oxford Union over missing meetings, being arrogant, and safety concerns: All you need to know

0

On November 17, Ahmad Nawaz resigned as President of the Oxford Union, the famed university’s debating club. Ahmad Nawaz (21) became the second Pakistani to be President of the Oxford debating society when he took up the role in June 2022. On Thursday, however, his 5-month stint as president came to an end as fellow students voted to remove him from the position.

On Thursday evening, Union members voted on a Special Adjournment Motion to reject the Union’s Access Committee’s prior decision to force Nawaz to quit. There were 421 ballots cast, with 164 voting to reject Nawaz’s resignation, 251 voting to uphold Nawaz’s resignation and 6 spoilt ballots.

Though this ‘forced’ resignation comes after a period of dissatisfaction with Nawaz’s behaviour toward other committee members, the President was dismissed on a technicality. Union members voted against excusing Nawaz’s inability to attend four out of six Access Committee meetings. Nawaz attempted to excuse his absences owing to ‘sickness,’ but the committee decided against it.

The Union Access Committee meets every Thursday and the President is obliged to attend. Failure to turn up on three occasions triggers an automatic resignation unless a valid reason for absence can be given. When Nawaz failed to show up for several such meetings, he claimed that he was unable to attend due to sickness, but members of the committee rejected his excuse.

However, the day Nawaz claimed he missed the meeting due to illness, he uploaded photos of himself with a guest speaker, Bhad Bhabie.

Nawaz requested that the committee consider the legitimacy of his excuse due to this purported sickness. However, multiple members objected, resulting in a secret ballot within the committee. Nawaz needed a simple majority to be successful, however, he was defeated with 9 votes against him, 7 votes in his favour, and 1 abstention.

Later, he urged members to vote against an access committee that he portrayed as highly partisan, stating “this house should pass the motion because this house is better than the access committee.”

Oxford Union students term Ahmad Nawaz ‘arrogant’

However, much to his disappointment, 251 out of the 421 Union members voted against him on Thursday, forcing him to resign from the position.

Notably, besides the prolonged dissatisfaction with his presidency from some members of the Union, he has also been branded ‘authoritarian and impulsive’ by other members of the Union.

A few students told the student newspaper Cherwell that Nawaz was arrogant and had not done enough work.

“There have been countless times when he has failed to turn up to some of the more manual jobs such as moving benches or term cards,” Matthew Dick, a senior member of the Union, was quoted by media as saying.

Another senior member, Disha Hegde, accused Nawaz of failing to do his duties. “He has, however, shown up to every free debate dinner and drinks reception – which are all financed from the members’ money,” said the student.

One student, speaking in the chamber, said they no longer felt ‘safe’ working on his committee. “Following this speech, I do not feel safe enough to continue working on this committee if the president does not resign.”

Aside from students, some parents have also expressed happiness that Nawab has been removed from the presidency. A social media user going by the handle @ashajadeja, who claimed that her daughter is a student at the institution, expressed satisfaction, adding that students had told her two months ago how Nawab had assaulted numerous women in the varsity. She also alleged that the prestigious Oxford university had conveniently brushed the issue under the carpet. “Justice has been served,” said the social media user sharing a media report about the removal of Nawab from the post.

Ahmad claims he is a victim of racism

Nawaz, on the other hand, has claimed that he has been a victim of racism. He said in a recent Facebook post that the events of the past few weeks had put him in a ‘state that I’ve not felt for a while and that he has struggled with racism in society.

‘I have been made to realise that as a non-British Muslim person, I have to do a lot more than anyone else to prove that I belong here.’

‘I usually only post positive and good things but my mental health has just been so f****d up lately. I haven’t slept properly in weeks and my chest contracts every time my phone notifications go off.’

Who is Ahmad Nawaz

Ahmad Nawaz was elected president of Oxford University’s debating society Oxford Union in June 2022. He was the second Pakistani to be elected for the post, the first being Benazir Bhutto, the former prime minister who was assassinated in 2007, who led the debating group in 1977.

Nawaz, a Philosophy and Theology student at Lady Margaret Hall, was 14 when he survived a massacre at the Army Public School in Peshawar, North-West Pakistan.

On December 16, 2014, 147 people, including 132 schoolchildren, were massacred in the deadliest terrorist attack in Pakistan’s history when Taliban terrorists stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar Cantonment and opened indiscriminate fire.

He was wounded in the shoulder and left for dead, but he crawled to a little wooden shelter, which was subsequently set on fire.

Haris Nawaz, Ahmad Nawaz’s younger brother, was one of 132 students massacred in the school by the Talibanis.

With Nawaz’s resignation, President-elect Charlie Mackintosh has taken over as Acting President, effective at 00:03 on Friday, November 18.

Satyendar Jain massage row: Former Tihar official dismisses claims of physiotherapy by Manish Sisodia

Videos of Satyendar Jain, the Delhi Health Minister who is being held in Tihar Prison, receiving a foot massage have gone viral on social media, sparking a controversy. Defending the videos, Delhi’s deputy chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia claimed that Satyendar Jain was getting his usual physiotherapy treatment for a spine injury and not some massage.

Now, a former official of the Tihar jail has come forward to refute the claims made by Manish Sisodia. Sunil Gupta, former PRO of the Tihar jail has shared detailed information about the practices allowed in the jail and things that are not allowed.

According to a report by India Today, Sunil Gupta said, “The physiotherapy is always done in a separate room by professionals with physiotherapy equipment and never in a jail cell. In the video, the convicts are seen massaging the minister, which is illegal. Usually, convicts line up to provide massage to influential people so that once they get out, they can provide favours to the convicts as well.”

Sunil Gupta added, “Home-cooked food is completely banned and even packed food from outside is not allowed. This is because wrong things were being smuggled under the garb of home-cooked food. If a minister had a one-on-one meeting with his wife, then it is illegal. We don’t allow any special treatment in terms of meetings and no one-on-one meetings are allowed inside the jail.”

Sunil Gupta further added, “TV sets are generally in barracks but under some conditions, they can be provided in jail cells, so it is not illegal. Mineral water bottles can be purchased and taken to jail cells, according to the jail manual. If an influential person such as a gangster, or politician comes to jail, then the system collapses and the ordinary jail officials succumb to the pressure. For a free and fair probe, Satyendar Jain should have stepped aside from the post.”

About Satyendar Jain getting a massage, Sunil Gupta spoke in detail with the news agency ANI. He said, “The video clearly showed that other prisoners were giving him massages. Massage is different from physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is given in physiotherapy wards in the hospital. The massage that he was being given inside the cell is not permissible under jail rules. As far as physiotherapy is concerned, in every jail, there is a physiotherapy center where massage can be given by a physiotherapist or a trained expert.”

Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) stated that Satyendar Jain was being given preferential treatment inside the Tihar jail, CCTV footage from within the jail premises was made public on Saturday showing Jain enjoying his stay in the jail.

The video which surfaced on November 19 showed Jain getting special treatment inside the jail. In the video, Jain is being given foot massage and head massage in jail while he is lying on the bed and reading some documents.

Bihar: Already married Taufiq pretends to be Raj to marry Julie Kumari; asked her to convert to Islam after his identity became known

Cases of ‘love jihad‘ continue to appear in different parts of the country. Now, one such case has surfaced in Bihar in which one Taufiq Alam pretended to be Raj Rajput to lure a Hindu woman Julie Kumari of Katihar into a love marriage. Once Julie knew the reality and resisted Taufiq, who is already married and has an 11-year-old daughter from his earlier marriage, he started forcing the victim woman to convert to Islam.

Not only this, but when the victim expressed her desire to take a divorce, Taufiq threatened her that he will kill her and her family members. The victim Julie Kumari has filed an application with the Superintendent of Police Katihar in this case. The accused Taufiq Alam is currently living in Gulf.

Taufiq Alam had a Facebook profile as Raj Rajput

Julie Kumari (age 29) lived in the BN Colony under the Manihari police station area of Katihar district with her family that sells vegetables to earn a livelihood. In her complaint, Julie said, “In 2015, talks with the accused started through Facebook. He had created an ID in the name of Raj Rajput on Facebook. He also told me his name was Raj. The numbers were exchanged and the conversation began. Then he also came to meet me. Raj said his father’s name is Amit Singh. He lives in Delhi with his family. We got engaged in 2016. No one from his family came then. Later, we got married in court.”

The reality was exposed due to Taufiq’s sister

Julie Kumari further said in her complaint, “After marriage, he took me to his sister’s house in Supaul. He didn’t let me out of the house. Initially, I found her sister’s diet strange. When I told Raj, he said there was nothing like that. Then I started to understand that Raj is not a Hindu. After some time, I came to know from the people around that Raj’s real name is Taufiq Alam.”

Taufiq Alam was already married

As Julie Kumari confronted Taufiq Alam, she was shocked to know that he is already married and has a daughter as well. Julie Kumari wrote in her complaint, “When I asked Raj about this, he said that he is already married. He also has an 11-year-old daughter. I asked why you cheated on me, but he asked me to keep quiet and live together. He also said if you try to leave me, I will kill you.”

Pressure to convert and other tortures

Julie Kumari said, “After some time, Taufiq started pressurizing me to change my religion and started assaulting me. He refused my Hindu way of worship. He asked me to offer Namaz. He started asking me to dress just like Muslim women.”

Enforcement Directorate files chargesheet against operatives of the banned Islamist outfit PFI

0

On Saturday (November 19), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against several office bearers of the now-banned Islamist out Popular Front of India (PFI) in a special court in Delhi.

The PFI leaders named in the chargesheet include Delhi PFI President Perwez Ahmad, Delhi PFI General Secretary Mohammad Ilias, and PFI Delhi Office Secretary Abdul Muqeet.

Notably, the Islamic extremist outfit was banned for five years in September of this year for allegedly having terrorist links.

The chargesheet will be taken into consideration on November 21. ED filed the chargesheet in Delhi’s Court through Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Naveen Kumar Matta and Advocate Mohd Faizan Khan.

“A new complaint has been filed under section 44 r/w section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering (PML) Act for the commission of an offence under section 3 r/w section 70 of the PML Act. It will be verified and registered. Put up for consideration before the concerned court on November 21,” the Sessions Court noted.

According to the ED, the three accused have admitted that they were involved in raising bogus cash donations on behalf of PFI and projecting the unaccounted cash received by PFI as legitimate.

In its chargesheet, ED mentioned that it has been found in the PMLA investigation that suspicious funds from within the country and abroad were raised by the accused PFI office bearers as a part of a larger conspiracy. These funds raised by PFI and related entities were covertly remitted to India and deposited in their bank accounts over the years.

“These funds were raised as part of the scheduled criminal conspiracy. PFI’s funds are thus nothing more than the proceeds of crime, which they have layered, placed, and integrated through their numerous bank accounts as well as those of their members or sympathizers. Thus, PFI and its related entities have been continuously involved in money laundering over the years,” ED noted.

Statements and bank details of several PFI organizations and individuals were examined during the investigation.

“In this case, the non-cooperative and evasive attitude of Perwez Ahmad, as well as his deliberate attempts to avoid joining the investigation in light of new evidence, namely the statements of so-called donors and evidence seized from various locations during searches, create further suspicion about his activities and involvement in money laundering,” the ED added.

“It is clear that Perwez Ahmad intentionally withheld disclosure of true facts and intentionally lied to mislead the investigating officer when his statements were recorded under section 50 of PMLA, 2002,” ED added.

Earlier, the ED stated that over the years, more than Rs 120 crores have been deposited in PFI and its related concerns, with a large portion in cash. According to the investigation, funds were collected from abroad, layered, transferred, and used for purposes such as the 2020 Delhi riots, the visit of PFI/CFI members with the intent to disrupt communal harmony in Hathras, the simultaneous launch of attacks, training, and carrying out attacks on individuals.

According to the chargesheet, the PFI organized training camps with the intent of causing disruption during the PM’s visit to Patna on July 12 and preparing to possess literature with the intent of posing a threat to the nation’s unity, integrity, and security.

‘If you do not vote for AAP, I will not get the sewers cleaned’: AAP MLA Mahinder Yadav threatens locals during MCD election campaign

Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mahinder Yadav has come under fire ahead of the forthcoming Delhi Municipal Corporation elections after a video emerged in which he can be heard threatening people that he would not work for them if they do not vote for the AAP candidate.

A video has appeared on the internet in which AAP’s Vikaspuri MLA Mahinder Yadav is heard apparently warning residents that if they do not vote for the AAP candidate, the sewage in the area would not be cleaned.

“If you do not vote for AAP, I will not get the sewers cleaned, no matter how dirty they become. It will not be my responsibility. I’m stating it loud and clear.” He stated this while some people laughed and cheered. The AAP candidate for the ward in the MCD election was standing beside him.

BJP politician Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga shared the video with the caption, “He is Vikas Puri @ArvindKejriwal MLA Mahendar Yadav. He is threatening people for Votes, this is Kejriwal model”

AAP MLA asking bribe

A video depicting Mukesh Goyal, a five-time municipal councillor who switched from the Congress to the AAP on November 27, 2021, requesting a junior engineer for a bribe was uploaded on November 18 by the BJP’s Sambit Patra. Patra pressed Kejriwal to dismiss Goyal after the sting.

In the recording of the sting, the AAP Councillor is heard purportedly claiming that money is needed to disperse over ‘150 gifts.’ The BJP further stated that the video was taken in October during Diwali when Goyal phoned the engineer and compelled him to pay crores of rupees.

Anti-Corruption Bureau arrests AAP MLA’s kin

On November 16, Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Model Town MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi’s brother-in-law Om Singh, Tripathi’s Personal Assistant (PA) Shiv Shankar Pandey alias Vishal Pandey and Prince Raghuvanshi for allegedly taking bribe for tickets of Municipal Elections in Delhi. They were arrested under relevant sections of the Corruption Act and bribery in elections.

Following the arrest made headlines, the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party called out AAP and said the party was full of corruption. BJP leader Harish Khurana called it a clear case of ‘cash for ticket.’ Pointing towards the alleged liquor policy scam and other cases against AAP leaders, he said, “All this shows that AAP is full of corruption and the kingpin is Arvind Kejriwal.”

‘Educated women have double standards’: Jaya Bachchan goes on a rant on her grand-daughter Navya Naveli’s podcast

Veteran Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan who often makes headlines over her controversial statements and antics, is again in news for her recent comments on educated women. Jaya Bachchan said that educated women display double standards.

The actress was speaking out her opinion on the podcast hosted by her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda and joined by her daughter Shweta Bachchan.

Whereas Navya Nanda was discussing how sons should be raised in a similar manner as daughters, Jaya Bachchan interrupted, saying, ”Educated women also have double standards, which is so sad. I want to say it but don’t feel comfortable doing so, but women are their own enemies.”

Shweta, on the other hand, said that her mother isn’t always nice to her, saying earlier in the episode, “Women need to be nicer to other women and more supportive of other women.” “I am very nice to Navya,” Jaya Bachchan said in response. “I am constantly assisting and advocating for other women. Let’s not bring up mother and daughter.”

However, Shweta retorted, ”There is a Madeleine K Albright quote, ‘There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women’. Mother, charity should begin at home!” To this, Jaya said, “Ohh shut up.”

Navya Naveli Nanda discussed Indian women’s fashion sense. Jaya Bachchan said that she does not understand why people prefer western clothing over Indian clothing.

“I think we’ve probably assumed that foreign clothes give women equal rights as men,” said Jaya Bachchan, adding, “whereas I want women to showcase their femininity.” I’m not saying go out and buy a saree, but women in other countries also wear dresses. All of this changed when women began wearing pants.

Shweta Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan’s daughter, says, “Wearing pants makes it easier for women to move around and also makes it easier to do work. We can easily move around. It is much easier to put on pants and a T-shirt than to keep fixing the pallu of the saree.”

Notably, a video of Jaya Bachchan cursing a photojournalist recently went viral on social media. Jaya attended Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai with her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda on October 16. She was seen getting irritated with the media as she arrived at the venue.

A video of Jaya Bachchan telling a media person who suddenly fell, “It does you good. I hope you… fall twice.”

Jaya was trolled on social media for her rude behaviour.

‘Your bad days will soon be here’

In December last year, the Samajwadi Party made controversial remarks in the Rajya Sabha. “Your bad days will come soon…I curse you,” Jaya Bachchan said during a debate on the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill in the Upper House of Parliament.

The Samajwadi Party leader was apparently triggered after one of the RS members questioned her about the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate to her daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the Panama Papers leak case.

She then chastised the Chair for failing to listen to the opposition: “…aap gala ghont dijiye ham sabka (you please strangle us all),” she exclaimed in the Rajya Sabha.

Tameez seekho: Jaya Bachchan gets angry at her fan

Jaya Bachchan was leaving Hiroo Johar’s birthday event in March 2019 when an eager fan attempted to photograph her. She called him back right away to give him a piece of her mind. “Aap mobile pe kyun photo le rahe ho? Poocha mujhse aapne? Tameez seekho,” (why are you taking photos on your phone? Did you ask me? learn some manners), she said.

Jaya Bachchan slams paparazzi for addressing Aishwarya as ‘Aish’

During Subhash Ghai’s birthday bash in 2013, one of the photographers inadvertently referred to Aishwarya as Aish. Outraged by the paparazzi’s deliberation of addressing Aishwarya by her first name rather than respectfully as ‘Aishwarya ma’am,’ Jaya Bachchan, Aishwarya’s mother-in-law, lashed out at the photographers, saying: “Ye Aishwarya kya hota hain huh?, Tumhari class mein padhti thi kya?”  (What is this Aishwarya? Did she study in your class?).

Fatehpur mass conversion racket: UP ATS suspects accused received foreign funding for illegal religious conversions in the state

0

Days after the Uttar Pradesh police arrested a Christian pastor named Vijay Masih and 13 other people for illegally converting a group of Hindus to Christianity in the Fatehpur district of the state, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police has started probing foreign funding links of the accused. The arrested people, associated with a local church in Fatehpur, were linked with a mass conversion racket, reports News 18 Hindi.

The racket was unearthed in April this year. Since then, police in UP’s Fatehpur have carried out three rounds of arrests following complaints from VHP and Bajrang Dal members about Christian groups trying to convert Hindus through bribes and allurement.

The UP ATS are now suspecting that the accused have been receiving foreign funding to fuel illegal religious conversions in the state. To probe this angle, the ATS has started investigating the foreign funding network of the arrested accused. The details of the bank accounts of as many as 31 of the 36 accused are being scrutinised.

The ATS is also investigating the role of a police officer, according to sources. The ATS inquiry indicated that there was laxity in handling the case because one Christian missionary is connected with an influential individual. However, the ATS is hopeful that numerous critical information about the racket may emerge following the investigation.

Uttar Pradesh police busts mass conversion racket in Fatehpur

Since April, the police have arrested 40 people connected to the Evangelical Church of India (ECI) in the Hariharganj locality of Fatehpur, with 14 of the arrests taking place between 30 October and 9 November.

On October 30, continuing its probe into the alleged illegal conversion racket, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested an accused Christian pastor named Vijay Masih for illegally converting a group of Hindus to Christianity in the Fatehpur district of the state. The accused was absconding after he was booked in another case of illegal mass conversion two and a half months ago. The Police arrested him on Sunday after they got a tip against the accused who was secretly carrying out another mass conversion in Hariharganj Church of the city.

The accused pastor, in the name of prayers, was giving lessons about Christianity to Hindus and was trying to forcefully change their religion. The Police arrived at the spot after they were informed about the illegal conversions and arrested the pastor for luring the Hindus. The Police have also recovered several Aadhaar Cards with different identities from the accused.

The accused pastor confessed that he was illegally converting a group of Hindus to Christianity in the Hariharganj Church of the city. He said that the Aadhaar Cards recovered by the Police belonged to those Hindus who have been converted and that their identities have been updated after they have been given lessons about Christianity and converted to a new religion.

Earlier, in April this year, the Fatehpur Police had arrested 26 people including the pastor in a case of mass conversion of Hindus to Christianity in the ECI Church building in Uttar Pradesh. Police had also booked 55 people in total in the case, including 10 women. The names of the accused included Vijay Kumar Samson, Reshma Samson, Ratna Daud, Sharon, Jyoti Monalisa, Geeta Masih, and more.

Hindu outfits raise alarm

The matter had come to light after the members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal surrounded the ECI Church building in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, and staged protests against the pastor who was allegedly converting more than 50 Hindus inside the Church. Around 100 people had gathered inside the Church on April 14 of which more than 50 were Hindus. The VHP members had also gathered outside the Church and alleged that the pastor in the name of prayers was giving lessons of Christianity to Hindus and was trying to forcefully change their religion.

Later, the accused after being released on bail continued to convert poor Hindus under the guise of a healing assembly. On receiving the complaint two and a half months ago, the police registered a case against Masih and the other persons involved. While they arrested many other accused involved in the case, they could not nab pastor Vijay Masih who went absconding from the spot. However, the accused pastor was arrested by the Police on October 30 while he was secretively luring, brainwashing innocent and poor Hindus and forcing them to convert to Christianity. Further investigations into the case are underway.

Qatar 2022: Fans risk being jailed, flogged over vague laws in the gulf country. Here is what you need to know if you plan on visiting

The 2022 FIFA World Cup has been mired in controversies even before its official commencement, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday (November 20). The choice of Qatar, a regressive Islamic country, as the host nation has put fans and players at risk of being penalised over Qatar’s very strict laws.

As per an exclusive report by The Sun, the ‘strict’, ‘confusing’, and ‘vague’ nature of laws in Qatar can land virtually anyone in jail. It could be for drinking alcohol, swearing, taking photographs, and even for engaging in sexual intercourse.

Archaic and medieval punishments such as stoning and flogging are legal in the Islamic country. And it poses a serious risk for the visitors who are expected to land in Qatar to watch the tournament.

Screengrab of the news report by The Sun

While speaking about the matter, Radha Stirling, founder of a London-based legal aid group’ Detained in Dubai’, told The Sun, “Qatar has not experienced mass tourism before this year and it is highly likely visitors will get into trouble, similar to the cases we have seen in Dubai over the past decade.”

“It is difficult to advise people to ‘obey the law’ when the laws are so strict that Qatar is telling police to ‘go easy on tourists’ during the cup. Arbitrary enforcement of the law creates confusion and risk to visitors,” she added.

She further emphasised that the police are obliged to act on complaints made by locals against visitors from other nations, even if they are without merit.

Challenges await football fans in Qatar

According to The Sun, football fans are at the risk of being charged with ‘public drunkenness’ for drinking and ‘offending’ someone. Importantly, drinking alcohol in public can land visitors in a 6-month-long prison sentence and a heavy fine.

Besides jail time and fines, those found flouting the unclear laws surrounding alcohol consumption can also be flogged. Indulging in flirting, heated arguments, and hurling abuses can also put football fans behind bars. The same holds true for clicking pictures without permission.

Moreover, homosexuals may face imprisonment up to 7 years in prison for ‘same-sex’ conduct. Due to the regressive outlook of the Qatari government, detainees have little protection against wrongful prosecution.

Meanwhile, demonstrators can face up to 5 years in prison and get fines of up to £23,000 (₹22.29 lakhs) for harming the ‘public system of the state.’ Radha Stirling pointed out that the first person to complain to the police is often taken seriously, even if the complaint is frivolous.

She further informed, “Sex outside marriage is illegal in Qatar so couples who book hotel rooms together are already in violation of the law, simply ‘hoping’ the law won’t be enforced.”

“Homosexuality is unlawful and those who share a hotel room could be equally at risk. Visiting a destination and ‘hoping’ that illegal acts are not prosecuted puts visitors in a dangerous situation,” the founder of Detained in Dubai added.

LGBTQ+ rights aren’t the only problem with Qatar hosting the World Cup, there have been concerns raised over the use of “slave labour” and poor working conditions in the Gulf state as well. Thousands have reportedly died while working on the infrastructure for the World Cup due to poor working conditions.

In a new development, Qatar banned the sale of beer and other alcoholic beverages at the World Cup stadiums just two days before the commencement of the mega tournament after promising alcohol availability.

While football fans from around the world who have made their way to Qatar are left disappointed with the sudden flip by the organisers, several English fans have demanded a refund after this decision.

Female football fans risk sexual abuse

The risk of unjust incarceration and sexual exploitation increases several folds for female football fans. According to The Sun, women who are subjected to abuse can be jailed for reporting crimes committed against them.

Given that Qatar restricts sex outside the ambit of marriage, even rape victims are known to be prosecuted under the impression the victim had ‘sex’ outside marriage.

“Around 100 prosecutions a year have been recorded under the strict “zina” laws banning sex and pregnancy outside of marriage. And even rape victims have been prosecuted after suspects claimed the sex was consensual – and handed sentences ranging from seven years jail to flogging with a whip or stick,” reported The Sun.

A glaring example of such a hostile police system came to light in 2016 when a rape victim was fined $845 and jailed for 3 months for reporting that she was abused.

Response of Qatar to criticism

Qatar’s Foreign Minister, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has meanwhile responded to the criticism about the country’s human rights abuse by calling the criticism “arrogant” and “racist.”

“It seems difficult for some to accept that a small country, a small Arab country, should be allowed to host the soccer World Cup. Racist clichés also keep cropping up. But that is not the case everywhere for a long time. There are fewer than ten countries from which such sharp criticism comes. The rest of the world is happy for us. 97 percent of the tickets have already been sold. That is a clear sign,” he had said.

Despite assurances from the Qatari police and FIFA organisers, everyone is not convinced. Radha Stirling said, “Female rape victims have been jailed for sex outside marriage and local prisons are notorious for human rights violations.”

The director of ‘Detained in Dubai’ informed that they have launched an app to help visitors stay out of danger during their visit to Qatar.

“We have launched an app where people can use the chat function to request urgent help or to receive warning alerts and notifications to keep people out of trouble as much as possible,” she told The Sun.

SC finds nothing ‘alarming’ in Gautam Navlakha wanting to be under house arrest in a CPI-owned house, dismisses NIA’s appeal

0

On Friday 18th November 2022, the Supreme Court denied the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) request to overturn an earlier order of the Court ordering Bhima Koregaon accused Gautam Navlakha to be placed under house arrest rather than imprisoned. Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy were on the bench that issued the ruling, and they ruled that it must be followed within 24 hours. To prevent abuse of the home arrest, the Court imposed several extra measures.

The bench also dismissed the NIA’s concerns during the hearing on the Communist Party of India owning the property where Navlakha requested to be placed under house arrest. Justice Joseph asked Solicitor General (SG), Tushar Mehta who appeared for the NIA, “Communist Party is a recognized party of India. What is the issue?” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, “If it does not shock you then what can I say?” Responding to this, the bench said, “No it does not shock us.”

The court said in the order, “We record submission of SLP petitioner (Navlakha) that he has no objection to NIA sealing the kitchen door leading to exit door. NIA is free to seal the kitchen door leading to the exit point. NIA shall not close the door between the hall and the kitchen.”

It further said, “Another concern is about openable grills. We direct such grills can be locked and keep the key with themselves. Apart from the CCTV installed, there is another one on the southern door. Order of Nov 10 shall be given effect within 24 hours from the date of the receipt of the copy of the order.”

During the hearing, the Court further made it clear that using the internet is strictly prohibited and that the NIA may again petition the top court if this rule is flouted. NIA in its petition had said that “it was never a consented order and the NIA had opposed it tooth and nail” while the court said that the order ruled on November 10 was having consent from parties.

NIA reminded the court that the order was based on the reasoning that the location of house arrest would be residential in nature. However, the NIA emphasized that Navlakha’s preferred site is a public library run by the Communist Party of India. It includes three entries through the main gate, a ground floor, a hall on the first level, and an open terrace. The agency discovered that the building is registered in the name of the Communist Party Secretary, who also runs it.

The library, according to Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, was converted into a temporary residence, and the defendants also concealed the fact that it has two entrances. Additionally, Navlakha submitted a petition to the Supreme Court complaining that the authorities were disobeying the ruling from November 10. Navlakha’s senior lawyer Nitya Ramakrishnan stated on Friday that the location suggested for his stay is a residential unit.

Ramakrishnan stated that the Communist Party of India “itself condemns Maoists” in reference to the claim made against them. It is a recognized party, according to Ramakrishnan, who asserted that anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of modern politics would know this. NIA also contended that the accused Gautam Navlakha is having links with ISI and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier on November 10, the Supreme Court pronounced the order on the application of Bhima Koregaon accused Urban Naxal Gautam Navlakha, seeking transfer to house arrest on account of his medical condition. The NIA vehemently opposed the petition moved by Gautam Navlakha, with Kapil Sibal making a passionate plea in his favor, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

NIA charges against Gautam Navlakha

Gautam Navlakha was arrested in 2020 when 11 people were taken into custody for organizing and giving provocative speeches during the Elgar Parishad event on the 31st of December 2017. The event was organized by “activists” of Kabir Kala Manch in Pune. The NIA says that the event promoted enmity between different groups of people and caste groups, leading to violence and loss of life. The NIA investigation revealed that the organizers of Elgar Parishad were in touch with leaders of CPI (Maoist), a banned terror outfit under UAPA, and were spreading the ideology of Naxalism/Maoism to encourage unlawful activity.

Shraddha Walkar murder case

On November 14, the Delhi Police solved the six-month-old murder case of Shraddha Walkar and arrested Aftab Poonawala for murdering her, and then chopping her into 35 small pieces. Aftab executed the murder on May 18 and stored her body parts in the refrigerator. He then disposed of the body pieces in Delhi’s Mehrauli forest during the next 18 days.

The accused was arrested based on the complaint filed by Shraddha’s father on November 10. He stated in the complaint that the accused and the deceased had rented an apartment in Delhi and were staying in an unhealthy live-in relationship. He said that he had always opposed their relationship as Aftab used to physically assault Shraddha.

The girl, a resident of Palghar was adamant about continuing her relationship with accused Aftab and shifted to Delhi with him. Three days after they shifted to Delhi, they engaged in a quarrel and Aftab happened to kill Shraddha. He confessed his crime on November 14 and stated that they used to fight a lot. He said that he murdered Shraddha on May 18 as she was forcing him to get married to her. They also fought over who would manage the domestic household expenses.

The accused has been arrested and a case under IPC section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offence committed) have been registered. Further investigations into the case are underway.
