JD(U) to oppose Citizenship Amendment Bill in Rajya Sabha, will send leaders to join protests in Assam

Bhartiya Janta Party’s Bihar ally Janta Dal United has decided to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill, that is yet to be passed in the Rajya Sabha. JD(U) had also abstained from voting in the Lok Sabha when the bill was tabled.

According to reports, JD(U)’s national vice president Prashant Kishor, its national secretary general KC Tyagi and national secretary Sanjay Verma will attend the protests to be staged by BJP’s former ally Assam Gana Parishad on the occasion of the Republic day in Guwahati.

“Different outfits opposing the Bill will hold a joint rally in Guwahati on January 27, while the AGP’s rally is scheduled to be held in Guwahati on January 28. We will join in both the rallies and extend the JD(U)’s support to all those organisations who are opposing the Bill,” JD(U)’s national secretary Sanjay Verma was quoted by Times of India.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on 8th January, seeks an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, to provide citizenship to the persecuted minorities (Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains, and Christians) from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

The bill was met with severe opposition from Assam and other political parties of North-east. It was alleged that the bill will pave way for demography change in the states like Assam, as it will allow non-muslims from bordering countries to settle there. They have alleged that bill is in violation of the 1985 Assam Accords.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has stated that groups with vested interests are spreading misinformation about the bill and it will in no way bring an influx of immigrants into Assam, contrary to what is being spread among the people. Instead, he added, the bill will be a check gate for a demographic shift in the state. He added that there are stringent criteria involved to apply for citizenship in the bill and his government is dedicated to preserving the interests of indigenous communities in the state.

The Bill has united parties which have traditionally been arch enemies. The CPI(M) has been supported in its opposition to the Bill by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. Members from the TMC and CPI(M), along with Congress and Samajwadi party, had also moved dissent notes to the JPC report on the Bill.

JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi has cited “Assamese Asmita” as its reason to stage protests against the bill. The resolution was passed at CM Nitish Kumar’s residence. Party has decided to hold a meeting of its national executive in the last week of February.

Government refutes reports of issue of en masse prosecution notice to TDS defaulters, says reports completely misleading

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Monday clarified that reports by certain media houses regarding the en masse issue of prosecution notices to small companies for TDS default are “completely misleading and full of factual inaccuracies”.

It further stated that the Mumbai Income Tax TDS office has issued Show Cause Notices only in a limited number of big cases where more than Rs 5 lakh of tax was collected as TDS from employees etc and yet the same was not deposited with the Income Tax Department in time.

“Having deducted tax from employees and other taxpayers and not depositing the same in time in the government treasury is an offence punishable under the law. It also affects the interest of the employees from whose salary the tax has been deducted by the unscrupulous employers who have not deposited the same in time in the government treasury,” CBDT further said.

The taxation body claimed that a few defaulter firms are “deliberately misleading the media to thwart action against themselves.”

CBDT further clarified that Mumbai IT TDS office has issued the prosecution notice to only 50 big firms in the last one month. Out of these, in 80% of the cases the TDS tax default is above Rs 10 lakh and in 10% cases, TDS default is between Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh. In the remaining 10% of cases, TDS default is of more than Rs 1 crore as detected in the survey.

The department also confirmed that “Prosecutions have also recently been launched against 4 big business houses where more than Rs 50 Crore of tax was collected by them from the taxpayers and yet not deposited with the Government in time.”

It can be noted that when an entity deducts TDS from payments made by it to employees, vendors etc, the total tax deducted in a month has to be deposited with the government by the 7th of the next month. Inability to do so is a violation of Income tax law.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has said that so far in this financial year only 1,400 prosecutions notices have been sent to assessees out of over 60 million returns filed. This, according to the CBDT, under no circumstances can be termed as mass harassment by the income tax department. Therefore, to say that prosecution notices en masse have been sent to taxpayers for minor defaults is completely incorrect and misleading, the CBDT added.

Taunting at the recently announced pension scheme for sadhus, Akhilesh Yadav asks for pension for Ramlila artists

Taking a jibe at the recent announcement by the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of giving pensions to Hindu sadhus, Samajwadi President Akhilesh Yadav said that even Ramlila artists should be provided a pension.

“Pension should also be provided to artists who play the roles of Ram, Seeta and Lakshaman and even Ravan”, Yadav said. He said that the saints should be provided a pension of at least Rs 20,000. Yadav was addressing the media in the party headquarters when he reacted to the announcement of pension to sadhus. He attacked the Yogi government of discontinuing similar schemes started by the Samajwadi government.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath announced that pension will be provided to sadhus in the state under the state pension scheme for senior citizens. The pension for destitute persons has also been increased from Rs 400 per month to Rs 500 per month. p

Opposition parties are calling the move of the UP government as appeasement of Hindus before the 2019 General elections.

Mehul Choksi gives up Indian citizenship, hands over his passport to Antiguan government

0

Fugitive businessman, Mehul Choksi, accused in the $2 billion Punjab National Bank fraud case, has surrendered his Indian citizenship and has handed over his Indian passport in Antigua. It was reported last year that Choksi had taken Antiguan citizenship.

Mehul Choksi, along with his passport has also submitted 177 dollars to the Indian High Commission in Antigua.

It has been reported that it might be an attempt by Chiksi to avoid extradition to India, where he is wanted by several agencies in connection to the PNB fraud.

The foreign ministry had reportedly stated that Mehul Choksi could not have dual citizenship. Though there are no bilateral ties between India and Antigua the government is trying hard to bring back the fugitive from Antigua under an Antiguan law that allows it to send back a fugitive to a designated Commonwealth country.

Choksi had moved to Antigua from the United States in July 2018 and had taken the citizenship of the Carribean nation under an investment program.

On January 4, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said that it has attached a factory in Thailand worth over Rs 13 crore of a Gitanjali group company, owned by absconding diamond jeweller Mehul Choksi, in connection with the alleged $2 billion PNB fraud case.

The ED, after probing and gathering concrete evidence about a Thailand factory, discovered it is owned by Abbeycrest (Thailand) Ltd. which is connected to Choksi’s Geetanjali group of companies. ED said that the attachment has been done under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, and the factory is a beneficiary of the Letters of Understanding (LoUs), that were fraudulently issued from the Punjab National Bank, worth Rs 92.3 crore. ED under the same act had attached various other properties of Choksi last year.

Earlier on December 25, 2018, Choksi has told a court in Mumbai that he cannot travel to India as he cannot suffer a 41-hour journey from Antigua because of his poor health.

In a written statement, he also said that the Enforcement Directorate had misled the court by not revealing his condition and the fact that he had been in touch with banks and wanted to settle his dues.

He had also used a ludicrous excuse of mob lynching in order to evade returning to India after a non-bailable warrant was issued by CBI against him.

On December 13, 2018, the International Police Organisation (Interpol) has issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Mehul Choksi on the request of the CBI. Interpol had also issued RCNs against Nirav Modi, his Belgian national sister Purvi Modi and brother Nishal Modi in relation to the scam.

Choksi, his nephew Nirav Modi, and others are being probed under various criminal laws, following a complaint from the Punjab National Bank (PNB) alleging that they have cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of Rs 13000 crore, with the purported involvement of some of its employees. The duo has been absconding ever since the case has been registered by the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

AAP IT cell faces humiliation over their old tweets as Kejriwal joins hands with Sharad Pawar

The anti-corruption crusader Arvind Kejriwal, who rose to prominence and power promising to take on the mighty and powerful, has left more than his party members disillusioned. After hugging fodder scam convict Lalu Prasad Yadav during the swearing-in ceremony of Nitish Kumar in November 2015, Kejriwal was seen joining hands with Sharad Pawar of Nationalist Congress Party during the ‘United India’ rally hosted by TMC chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday. Kejriwal’s bonhomie with Pawar, who has his own share of allegations of corruption to his name, didn’t go down too well with Aam Aadmi Party IT cell members who were at a loss of words trying to defend the indefensible.

Twitter users dug out the old, embarrassing tweets of AAP IT cell members where they had called all sort of names to Sharad Pawar, the same man their Dear Leader was found hobnobbing with.

Other AAP supporters also expressed their disillusionment.

Amusingly, Arvind Kejriwal, who has suddenly found an ally in Mamata Banerjee, at one point had sworn he would not back her even if Anna Hazare would.

Old tweets of Arvind Kejriwal himself were dug out where he had accused Sharad Pawar of having ‘black money’.

Clearly, things have changed a lot since November 2016.

That is not it. Former AAP leaders, who left the party after being disillusioned, too, took to Twitter to express their disappointment at the way things have taken turn in Aam Aadmi Party.

Mayank Gandhi further added how Kejriwal, in his desperation for power, has joined hands with the disruptive forces in India.

Arvind Kejriwal has been facing a lot of criticism from his supporters, many of whom have quit the party complaining about his dictatorial tendencies and unwillingness to take criticism. Kejriwal has also been accused of straying from the core principles the party was formed on.

Vivek Doval files criminal defamation case against Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Caravan Magazine editor and reporter

Vivek Doval, son of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has decided to file a criminal defamation complaint against Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Editor-in-Chief of Caravan Magazine and Caravan Magazine reporter Kaushal Sharoff, reported ANI

According to the reports, Vivek Doval, son of NSA Ajit Doval has filed a criminal defamation plea in Delhi’s Patiala House Court after Caravan Magazine, a left-wing portal had published a report claiming that Vivek Doval had started a hedge fund in Cayman Islands days after demonetisation. The Delhi’s Patiala High Court has decided to hear the matter tomorrow.

Following the report, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had accused Vivek Doval of tax evasion and had sought the RBI to make public details of FDI inflows from Cayman islands since demonetisation, which he claimed were to the tune of Rs 8,300 crore during 2017-18 and equalled total funds flowing into India between 2000 to 2017.

However, Ramesh did not substantiate his allegations with any documentary evidence. The Congress leader went on to claim Vivek Doval had involved in channelling money out of the country to bring them back to India after demonetisation.

Rajasthan High Court summons Robert Vadra and his mother to appear before ED

0

Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, has been summoned by the Rajasthan High court to appear before the Enforcement Directorate. The ED is investigating Vadra in the Bikaner land scam, and he will have to appear before ED along with his mother on February 12th as per court’s order

Robert Vadra was summoned by the ED for the third time in last week of November 2018, after he had ignored two summons issued by the agency earlier.

During a hearing of a petition filed by Vadra’s Sky Light Hospitality Ltd, the Rajasthan High Court said that all partners of the firm will have to appear before the ED on February 12. Appearing on behalf of the union of India, Additional Solicitor General Rajdeepak Rastogi said that only an investigation is going on at present in the case, no FIR has been filed or charges have been fixed, hence the process can’t be stopped at this moment. Satisfied with the arguments of ASG, the court ordered all the partners of the company to cooperate with ED in the investigation.

The lawyer of the company said that his client is ready to cooperate in the probe, but his son is scheduled to undergo knee surgery in London. On this, the court gave them the flexibility to fix the date after discussion between the lawyers of both the sides. Accordingly, the date of February 12 was determined. On that day, Robert Vadra’s mother Maureen Vadra will also have to appear before the ED, as both Robert Vadra and Maureen Vadra are directors of Sky Light Hospitality Private Limited.

The court maintained the stay order on the arrest of Robert Vadra in the case granted earlier. When Rajdeepak Rastogi requested that arrest should be allowed if there is a need to do so, the court said if such need arises an application can be filed with the court to obtain permission.

The case pertains to a land deal in which Sky Light Hospitality had allegedly purchased a plot in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The ED had registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in this matter in 2015, after the state police had filed FIRs based on a complaint by local tehsildar alleging forgery in the deal. It is alleged that Skylight had sold 69.55 hectares of land to Allegeny Finlease at ₹7.41 lakh per hectare, but it had purchased the land at the rate of ₹ 1 lakh per hectare. Mahesh Nagar, an authorised representative of several companies linked to Vadra, had bought and sold land on behalf of Skylight Hospitality.

The amount used by Allegeny Finlease to buy the land came from a loan given by Bhushan Power and Steel company (BSPL). In the same year, BSPL was granted an exemption of ₹500 crore by the Income Tax Settlement Commission (ITSC), a decision which has come under the scanner.

The state government had cancelled the transfer of 374.44 hectares of land sold in various deals after it was found that land allotments were made in the name of fake persons. It is alleged that land meant to expand army’s firing range was grabbed by the land mafia through forged and fabricated documents.

Father Muttungal claims MP govt agreed to withdraw ‘false cases’ of conversion against Christians: Here is all you need to know about him

A delegation of Rashtriya Isai Manch Sangh (RIMS), headed by Father Anand Muttungal, met the Law Minister of Madhya Pradesh, PC Sharma, on Thursday. He said that the Minister had agreed to withdraw the ‘false cases’ of conversions against Christians, according to Daily Pioneer.

“We briefed him that the BJP-led Government in Madhya Pradesh had persecuted Christians in the name of conversion to take revenge as they believed that Christians were supporters of the Congress,” The Free Press Journal (FPJ) quoted Muttungal as saying. “The BJP and other right-wing organisations believe that Christians and those drawing benefit from the works carried out by Christians too will support the Congress and so they used all means to stop Christian activities in the state,” he is reported to have said.

RIMS’ spokesperson Richard James said as per FPJ, “There have been about 264 cases in the state during 15 years of BJP rule in the state. The organization supporting the BJP has taken help from the police and administration to persecute Christians working in the field of social work, education and religious activities. They have used power to defame Christians and stop the works done by them for the poor.”

Muttungal has been at the forefront of demanding special concessions for the Christian community in the state. In 2016, he had claimed that Christians are “systematically being sidelined” from government quotas for religious minorities. He remarked that the over 90% of these benefits go to the Muslim community.

In 2017, Muttungal denied that Christian missionaries indulge in religious conversions despite great evidence to the contrary. “Christians live as a very microscopic minority in the villages dominated by the Hindu community,” he said. “It’s impossible to deceitfully or forcibly convert any Hindu to Christianity. The charges against the churches by the RSS and other Hindu outfits have been there for 25 or 30 years. But till today, not even in a single charge has been proved in any legal system of the country.”

In an article on his website, Muttungal emphasized that worshipping ‘Bharat Mata’ as a Goddess is an “aggression” against monotheistic cults. But he added that Christian authorities need to come up with a special prayer for ‘Bharat Mata’ who should be conceptualized as a religion-less entity to “further establish” the Church in India.

Although Muttungal claims that Christian missionaries do not deceitfully convert Hindus, in an undated article on his website, he highly appreciates a “barefooted saffron clad priest” who seeks to convert people. Another “creative mission” that he appreciated was one where a club was started by a missionary with facilities such as “coffee, snacks, free internet, a library for books, music, videos games, pool tables etc.” He then states, “The word of God is open to them in different forms and he (the missionary) says a few are getting attracted to Jesus.”

Muttungal appears to harbour a deep-seated hatred for the RSS. He writes about them, “They have exploited the religious sentiments of devout Hindus with the ulterior motive of planting themselves into all sections of the society. They have managed to have their people from village secretaries to the highest offices in the country. They have their people in all political parties, socio-cultural organizations, literal and scientific field, educational, industry and all possible sections we can think of. They have hovered over the whole nation like an octopus tightening its arms over people to breathlessness. They have become the most feared force challenging the Constitution and Governments. A terrorist attack kills a few people but what about this organization which poisons the minds of millions. If we tend to believe that there could be some truth in these allegations, then we need to answer the question, Is RSS a Nationalist organization?”

On another occasion, he accuses the RSS of trying to ‘convert’ tribals to Hindus and eroding their culture while ignoring the Christian missionary activities that present a great threat to the way of life of tribals. He stated, “Sangh Parivar organizes all kinds of Melas in areas legally protected to preserve the traditions and cultures of tribals and other aboriginals under Scheduled Five of Constitution. Media widely reported that tribal farmers’ land is forcefully attached for the use of Mela, their original culture, environmental laws are violated and religious practices are vitiated etc. They incited local residents to rise against followers of other religious followers and political ideologies.”

In 2011, in an open letter to the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Muttungal appealed “to introduce an all religious prayer in inauguration, foundation stone laying ceremonies etc. in government programmes or programmes that utilizes taxpayers’ money instead of the current practice of reciting the prayers from one religion, to uphold the secular values of the constitution, if at all the government wishes to have religious prayer. However, it would be more appropriate to evolve a purely secular form of inauguration/foundation laying ceremony.” It appears to be a thinly veiled appeal for the de-Hinduization of such cultural practices in a country whose native culture is derived from Sanatana Dharma.

Muttungal, naturally, isn’t a huge fan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well. In an article which appears to have been penned when the latter was still the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he describes Modi as a man “who spit venom against the minorities”. Regarding Modi’s appeal for communal harmony, Muttungal stated, “It can also be interpreted as the faith of a sinner who undergoes mental tension and depression then he decides to turn to the mercy of God for forgiveness and absolution from his grave sins committed against the innocents. So that he can start afresh a new life dedicated to serving the peoples regardless of creed, class and caste. It gives us hope that all those fundamentalists who used violence to harm and kill innocents too may come into fasting and asking for forgiveness. Let the whole world call it a political stunt but in the coming days the so-called Sadbhavana (Communal harmony) concept thrown by him is going to be playing a central stage in the religio-political history of India.”

In another undated article, he urges the Vatican to devise a clear strategy for Christians to gain political power in India. He wrote, “It is the right time that Church heads to plan for a clear policy on promoting the motivated Christian and Christian friendly youths into the political leadership. Vatican Council II has clearly said that evangelization and development of the ecclesial community is the only and fundamental duty entrusted to the priests, nuns and bishops but the laity are entrusted the world to be developed into a better place for inhabitants. If we plan well today, maybe after a quarter of a century; Christians will come up themselves to the post of the Prime Minister and President of this Country.”

In light of his articles, it appears Muttungal’s meeting with the Law Minister of the newly elected Congress government in Madhya Pradesh is intended to further the Christian evangelical agenda in India. There appears to have been some sort of pressure from the erstwhile BJP government on missionaries but with the Congress in power, which is perceived as ‘secular’ and thus more sympathetic to them, Christian missionaries are seeking assurance from the Congress government that their missionary activities will not be hampered by them.

ED attaches properties of radical Islamist preacher Zakir Naik worth 16.40 crores

0

In a massive crackdown, the Enforcement Directorate has reportedly attached properties worth Rs.16.40 crore in Mumbai and Pune, belonging to radical Islamist preacher Zakir Naik, under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

According to reports, the ED investigations have revealed that funds of Rs around 49.20 crores were received in the non-resident external (NRE) bank accounts of accused Zakir Naik in India from his Dubai accounts and the origin of these deposits were unknown.

Earlier in October 2018, the NIA court had ordered the attachment of five properties belonging to Naik in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area.

Zakir Naik reportedly used the funds to the tune of Rs 17.65 crore to buy properties in projects like Fatima Heights and Aafiyah Heights in Mumbai, ENGRACIA in Pune and also a venture at Bhandup, Mumbai. The builders involved include Salim Kodia from M/s MK Enterprises, Munaf Vadgam from M/s Aafiyah Realtors, Sameer Khan from M/s Pacific Orient Genesis Associates, and Musa Lakdawala, partner of M/s Lakdawala & Yash Associates.

In an attempt to disguise the origin of funds and the real ownership of properties, the initial payment from Zakir Naik’s account was diverted to those of his wife, son and niece to buy properties in the name of relatives, as reported by the money trail established by ED. “The total attachment as Proceeds of Crime, in this case, is Rs 50.49 crore including the present attachment. Further investigation is in progress,” said a statement released by ED.

The investigation was initiated by ED on the basis of the charge sheet filed by National Investigation Agency (NIA) on 26 October 2017 before the court of Special Judge, NIA, Mumbai, against Zakir Naik and others under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The criminal case against him was registered in 2016.

According to the charge sheet, Zakir Naik had deliberately and maliciously insulted the religious beliefs of Hindus, Christians as well as Muslims who didn’t follow the Wahhabi-Salafist ideology preached by him. Naik is accused of making abusive remarks against Hindus, Christians, Shia, Sufi and Barelwis, with intention of outraging their religious feelings.

For such activities the accused was receiving funds from the Islamic Research Foundation as well as other unknown sources, states the ED release, adding that the Islamic Research Foundation and M/s. Harmony Media has been instrumental in the maximum circulation of Zakir Naik’s incriminating speeches.

Naik has been notorious in spreading hatred between religious groups and for inciting Muslim youth to join in the jihad against non-believers of Islam. He used to use his NGO ‘Islamic Research Foundation’ (IRF) and a TV channel (Peace TV) to air his hate speeches in the country. The government of India had taken the channel off the air and banned the NGO.

Ayyappa Bhaktha Sangamam: Kerala sees one of the largest congregations of Hindus against Communist govt’s desecration of Sabarimala

A massive gathering of devotees had come together on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram to protest against the communist government in Kerala which has been ‘incessantly trying to destroy temple traditions and Hindu customs’ in the state.

Devotees, seers and spiritual leaders from across South India had gathered, making it one of the largest congregation of Hindus in the history of Kerala. Inaugurating the Sangamam, Mata Amritanandmayi said that while changes are required in temples, they should not forget the temples. She added that the recent incidents at Sabarimala temple were unfortunate and the root cause of the problem was ‘lack of knowledge about temple traditions’.

She added that temples require thantri, poojari and also the faithful. Lord Ayyappa is of Sabarimala is an eternal celibate and while changes are required, they should not be brought in by forgetting the temple.

Presiding over the function, Swami Chidananda Puri said that temple traditions could not be altered by a secular government. He criticised the ruling CPM government and said that the Hindus should be thankful to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan for organising the Hindus of Kerala against the backdrop of Sabarimala issue. He even condemned the repeated criticism of Hindu priests and sannyasins by CPM ministers. Swami Paripoornanda said that Kerala CM can administer the people of the state but he can’t administer Lord Ayyappa.

Bharathbhushan, brother of Kanaka Durga, a CPM activist who entered the Sabarimala shrine earlier this month, was also present. He apologised to the devotees for the ‘sin’ committed by his sister. He even said that she won’t be allowed to come inside the house unless she puts an unconditional apology to Hindu society.
