Jailed Maoist leader claims their organisation bore an irreconcilable grudge against Gauri Lankesh: Times Now

0

Ever since the news of the Gauri Lankesh murder broke, various so-called left liberals and eminent media personalities started to almost directly blame the Right Wing and Hindutva for the murder.

Their resolve was so strong that they even resorted to attack the brother of Gauri after he alleged that there could be a Naxal angle behind the murder. According to him, Gauri had been facing threats from the Naxals for helping the government in trying to convert and bring them into the mainstream.

Now it seems that the propaganda peddled by the left might suffer another blow, if a Times Now report is to be believed.

The report claimed that Special Investigative Team questioned a Maoist leader currently lodged in Bangalore Central Jail. This Maoist leader reportedly claimed that the ultra-left bore an irreconcilable grudge against Gauri Lankesh. According to the report, the Maoist leaders were particularly unhappy with Gauri Lankesh for urging them to surrender.

The reason being was that, they took her possible assurances at face value and surrendered. But after the surrender they reportedly remained languishing in jails with no hope in sight. The report pointed fingers if this sense of betrayal among the left-wing terrorists could have caused the murder of Lankesh.

The news anchor also during the report posed the question as to whether such facts are being deliberately suppressed. This isn’t the only time aspersions have been cast over this whole affair as questions were also raised over the type of probe being carried out by the Karnataka police.

Another Times Now report has now claimed that Gauri Lankesh had met a few Maoists a couple of months ago in Kerala. This revelation also seems to have been made by a Jailed Maoist Leader and the report later questioned as to whether the whole Right Wing murder theory was motivated for political gains.

Even as these reports claimed that there might be a sizeable chance of a Naxal involvement in the whole matter, other reports have categorically claimed that the SIT has found no evidence to establish the role of Naxals in the case. It seems that only time will reveal the truth behind the matter, or will it?

Rohingya row: Bengal cleric threatens to overthrow Central Government

0

In an outrageous move, a Bengal cleric, to show solidarity with the Rohingya Muslims has allegedly threatened to overthrow the central government over deportation of the Rohingya Muslims. Shia cleric Maulana Shabbir Ali Azad Warsi allegedly threatened the government at a rally on 18th September in Kolkata and said, “If the Muslims are in minority, are we weak? You don’t know the history of the Muslims. We are Hussaini Muslims. Even if we are 72, we can kill lakhs.”

In the video he could be heard saying,”This is our memorandum to the Delhi Government that Rohingyas are our brothers. Don’t think that the Rohingya Muslims are different from the Muslims of India. We all Muslims are brothers. Don’t try to evacuate the Rohingya Muslims from Bengal. This is Bengal, not Assam, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Muzaffarnagar or Muzaffarpur.

It is imperative to note that confidential government reports have said Rohingyas have terror links and an Al Qaeda man was arrested in Delhi trying to recruit Rohingyas. Government of India has made its stand very clear regarding the Rohingyas that they are illegal immigrants and need to be deported as per law.

We had reported in the past how the erstwhile UPA government had in 2012 turned a blind eye to the illegal immigration, due to domestic political pressure and international concern over human rights. As a result of this inflow, their numbers have been pegged at about 40,000 which was excluding the 14,000 odd Rohingyas who are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Husband gives wife Triple Talaq after she tries to stop him from forcibly selling her land

0

On August 22nd the Supreme Court in a historic judgement, had deemed the practice of instant triple talaq as unconstitutional.

Even though some clerics had opposed this judgement, the general consensus approved the judgement and it was expected that the practice would soon start to fizzle out from the Muslim society. But that doesn’t seem to be the case just yet.

Now almost a month after the judgement, reports have come out about a Triple Talaq incident. The incident pertains to the Barahpur Kuwar village in Basti district of Uttar Pradesh.

Here according to reports, a 50 year old woman named Asma Khatun reached the police station on Monday to lodge a complaint against her husband. There she alleged that her husband gave her her triple talaq and she was left wondering as to where she would go with her 7 children. She had come to the police station along with her son, grandson and daughter-in-law.

She claimed that she had sacrificed her whole life towards serving her husband and after she tried to stop him from doing an immoral thing, he gave her a triple talaq. The 62 year old husband named Mohammed Naseem had reportedly given her the instant divorce about 20 days back based on a false allegation of her not serving him during his sickness.

She claimed that the true reason behind it is that, he was forcibly trying to sell the land which was owned by her. According to reports, she used to own 4 bighas of land out of which the husband had already sold 2 bighas. When he allegedly wanted to sell the remaining 2, she tried to stop him. He as a result became angry and gave her triple talaq.

She now claims that he is not allowing her to stay at their home and is insistent on selling the land. She claims that the land forms a part of their livelihood and the kids won’t have anything to eat if the land is sold.

She also claimed that after getting the talaq she had tried to seek justice from the members of her community but nobody came to her aid.

The Circle Officer confirmed the complaint of Asma and stated that a station house officer would be carrying out the probe. If the husband is found guilty then action will be taken against him.

Another report quoted the Station officer who stated that even though the instant talaq has been banned by the Supreme Court, they haven’t yet received any instructions as to how they should proceed with the investigation.

Permission sought to prosecute Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah for nepotism, misuse of power

0

The Karnataka Police Mahasangha wrote to the state’s governor on Tuesday to ask permission for prosecuting their Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over Nepotism and misuse of power allegations.

The charges have been levied reportedly on the basis of his appointment of Hoskote MLA, N. Nagaraj as the Chairman of Bangalore’s International Airport area planning authority. The report claimed that the CM was violating the oath of office as he was appointing people as per his whims and fancies without having any knowledge of the candidate’s background. It further asked him to be held accountable for the same as the decision was allegedly made to benefit his own partymen to get such posts.

The letter also put out various criteria which one needs to fulfil for becoming a member of the planning authority, unless he/she is made a member by virtue of their office. The criteria includes having at-least a 5 year experience as either an engineer, town planner or architect. It also includes having to specialise in any one of the fields like economics, geography among others.

Shashidhar Venugopal the chief of this same Mahasangha had filed a complaint against Siddaramaiah and 27 other ministers in May with the Karnataka Lokayukta, over the transfer of police officers in the state. It was alleged that large scale corruption had taken place to facilitate the transfers.

Theses aren’t the only controversial instances clouding the public life of Siddaramaiah.

It was reported that the CM was found wearing a Hublot watch which allegedly cost Rs 70 lakh. This resulted in the opposition demanding a probe into the matter. Siddaramaiah claimed that he was gifted the watch by a friend and later declared it a state asset and deposited it with the state secretariat.

In April 2016 he faced allegations of nepotism after a contract to set up a CT and MRI lab at the government-run Bengaluru Medical College was given to a company headed by his son.

Even the Indira Canteen which seems to have become his poll plank have become marred with allegations of food shortage and unhygienic cooking.

BJD activists resort to widespread hooliganism after calling a bandh to protest fuel prices

0

On 18th September, ruling party of Odisha, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) called for a “State wide agitation” against central government to protest against the rising prices of petroleum products.

The party had released an official statement regarding this on 15th September. The statement said that, even though crude prices have reduced in the international market, our country is seeing an increase, which is a burden on common people. The party as a result will hit the roads to protest against this.

The situation on ground turned ugly from early Monday morning as BJD activists started blocking roads and resorted to hooliganism. They blocked various arterial roads of the capital city, forcing office goers to stay inside. Alert citizens and journalists posted photos and videos of various BJD activists beating up people, vandalising property and blocking general through fares. At some places, BJD activists even stopped trains with help from local MLAs, some of whom were later detained by the police.

The violence also included goons terrorising school going children:

All this didn’t go down well with the Odia tweeples. While, BJD’s social media influencers tried to trend #HakPainHartal translating to “Hartal for rights”, people questioned whose right they are fighting for by threatening common people:

Few incidents in particular did not go down well with public. In one such incident, BJD activists misbehaved with a women in full public view:

In other such incidents, BJD activists didn’t allow several ambulances to pass through. A patient requiring emergency care for his eyes, was not allowed to reach the hospital. After the video describing his ordeal reached the masses, anger against the ruling dispensation rose even further:

The goons didn’t even spare old people. A lady, who was driving her father in law to a nearby hospital was stopped midway, attacked with rods and her windshield was broken. She took it to Twitter to reach out to party supremo Shri Naveen Patnaik and told him that he lost her respect:

There were other incidents of attacks on aged people as well:

Many parents also faced an ordeal as yesterday was an exam day in several schools:

Even as enraged twitter users were venting their anger against the ruling dispensation for turning a deaf ear to the situation, BJD President Naveen Patnaik failed to pay heed and give an official statement.

However, party MP and senior leader Baijayanta Panda took to social media to express his dissatisfaction over the emerging situation. He termed it shameful and dissociated himself from those activities.

He said that, protests should be meaningful and peaceful without resorting to violence. He posted a photo of his earlier days, where he is seen protesting against the UPA government of 2010 sitting alongside former party MP and Naveen Patnaik’s bête noire Late Shri Pyari Mohan Moahapatra. He termed the current bandh as anti people:

He further added that the party he helped found, never had violence as one of it’s principle:

Union cabinet minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condemned the incident. He however gave it a spin by claiming that the BJD was resorting to violence to oppose BJP and his own rise in the state. He said that, in a democracy everyone has a right to dissent but any form of violence is condemnable and nobody is above law.

He further added that, “The local party can abuse me at a personal level to which I don’t have an objection, but to harass common people and even women to vent their ire against me is deplorable. In a democracy, people are the jury.”

After the favourable Panchayat election results and BJP’s national executive meet, the state unit of BJP is in election mode and has upped it’s game. Party president Amit Shah has visited the state several times and recently launched mission 120+, when he claimed that BJP is going to form the next government in state with full majority. Union cabinet minister Dharmendra Pradhan is now seen very frequently in the state attending a large number of public meetings and inauguration events.

Even Congress is trying to revive itself. Top leaders recently camped in New Delhi and met Rahul Gandhi.

While BJD has earlier protested against various policies of central government it was never accompanied by this kind of large scale bandh and violence. Some are guessing this to be party’s nervousness at the rising political heat in the state. While a healthy competition between political parties surely benefits the common man, one only hopes that the common man is not affected in this game of one-upmanship between political parties.

Al Qaeda man arrested in Delhi while trying to recruit Rohingyas

0

The status of Rohingyas is currently a very hotly debated topic in India. It is speculated that there are about 40,000 illegal Rohingyas illegally residing in the country even without any proper registration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

As a result they have elicited a very divided opinion. A section of the Indian society including the Indian government have time and again reiterated that Rohingyas are illegal immigrants who need to be deported by law. While another section comprising of human rights activists and the so called eminent citizens is trying to challenge this stance by citing compassionate grounds.

One of the main reasons being cited as to why this “compassion” angle might be detrimental is that, it has been reported that the Rohingyas are being radicalised by various terror outfits, as a result of which, they might become a serious security threat for the country.

We had in the past reported how this process had already began in 2013, with reports claiming that the Lashkar-e-Taiba was radicalising the Rohingya youths. It was later found in 2014 that a Rohingya Muslim was arrested in connection with the Burdwan blast. Later a foreign terrorist gunned down by security forces in South Kashmir also turned out to be a Myanmar national.

Now this whole Rohingya terror angle has somewhat been cemented by reports about Samiun Rahman, a key Al Qaeda recruiter being arrested while he was allegedly in the process of recruiting the Rohingyas.

According to the report, Rahman who hails from Bangladesh was setting up base in Delhi, Mizoram and Manipur for radicalising and recruiting Rohingyas to not only fight the Myanmar Army but also to wage war against India. Rahman in the past has waged Jihad in Aleppo, Syria after which he was sent to Bangladesh for recruiting terrorists.

He then was arrested in Bangladesh for terror financing and was released this April. Soon after his release he was contacted by an Al-Nusra commander named Mohammad Jowlani who instructed him to go to India and recruit the Rohingya refugees.

He as a result is believed to have shortlisted about 12 Rohingya refugees living in Kashmir, northeast, Delhi, Bihar and Jharkhand. The police got a tip-off about his activities about two months ago and were tracking him ever since.

Post the arrest, $2000 in cash, a 9 mm pistol, Bangladeshi sim cards and a Voter ID card in the name of Shumon Haq have been recovered from him. The police is now trying to unearth the entire Al Qaeda module which has been developed by him.

‘Journalist’ wishes death for Modi, brazens it out when publication disassociates

0

On Monday (India time), Suprateek Chatterjee, a columnist with leading Left-leaning media houses tweeted a death wish to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Incidentally, it was just past PM’s birthday for him when he tweeted, as the Modi hater was in US when he expressed his desire to see Modi dead:

The time stamp seen along with a tweet is based on location of the person who is reading the tweet. The above screenshot was taken as per Indian standard time.

In case you thought that the Modi hater ‘journalist’ was just pointing out the unpleasant reality that every human being inches towards his or her natural death with every passing day, the hater clarified in a subsequent tweet that not only he wanted Modi to be dead, he wished an unnatural death to Modi:

Hate filled journalist wishes death to Narendra Modi on Twitter
Hatemonger Suprateek Chatterjee admitting that he wants Modi dead, and that he has no guilt in wishing him death.
The so-called journalist virtually wishes that Narendra Modi dies the way a dog dies after being crushed under the wheels of a car

This is not the first time the Modi hater had wished for an unnatural death to Narendra Modi. Earlier he had wished that Islamic terrorists kill Modi:

Naturally such hate mongering didn’t go down well with people and he was called out for the same, considering just few days earlier, Prime Minister Modi was asked to be answerable for the abusive tweets by people he follows:

This is not for the first time a so-called journalist has wished for death of Narendra Modi. We have earlier seen how an NDTV journalist was ‘excited’ when Narendra Modi had caught swine flu, how a Times Now journalist waited for Modi to be assassinated, and how another columnist with The Quint wanted Modi to be shot dead. The Quint was the only one to act in wake of such complaints, and they had disassociated themselves with the man who wanted Modi killed.

Incidentally, hatemonger Suprateek had written for The Quint too. The website took the same step as it had done earlier, and declared that it will disassociate itself from the hate-mongering columnist:

Other organisations for which the hatemonger works, i.e. OPEN Magazine, The Hindu, Buzzfeed India, Caravan, GQ, etc. have not issued any statements so far.

The hatemonger changed his Twitter bio later and removed the mention of publications he is associated with

However, it appears that the other organisations are not going to act against the hatemonger, as he issued a cocky statement where he justified his wish to see Modi dead. He issued the statement in a series of tweets, where instead of apologising for his hate, he mocked The Quint for disassociating with his writings.

In a very apparent bid to drum up political support, the hatemonger Suprateek also dragged in BJP IT cell in his tweets justifying his hate. And his trick appears to be working, with many so-called left-liberals supporting the hatemonger and attacking The Quint. Even the India head of BuzzFeed supported the hate-filled tweets by the hate-monger. Most certainly, the left-liberal ecosystem will reward hatemonger Suprateek Chatterjee for wishing death to Modi.

It should be noted that the same bunch of left-liberals had tried to take away job of author Shuchi Singh Kalra for an angry tweet over terror attacks, apart from hounding OpIndia co-founder Rahul Raj by writing to his employers complaining about his tweets, which did not wish death to anyone. The double-standards employed by those on Left are staggering like their hate.

Facing 20 years of anti-incumbency, Gujarat Assembly elections won’t be a cakewalk for the BJP

0

Riding high on the unprecedented victory in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, BJP President Amit Shah has set the target of over 150 out of 182 seats in upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections. While the BJP does stand more than very good chance of winning the elections, 150 is a bit overambitious. Before we delve deeper into what to expect, let us quickly go through Gujarat’s history in politics.

The BJP is facing 20 years of anti-incumbency in the state. It was in 1995 when the BJP came to power with majority and formed the state government with Keshubhai Patel as the Chief Minister. Shankersinh Vaghela, an active RSS member who was even jailed during the Emergency, was not favoured by Narendra Modi, the then national general secretary of the BJP. Soon after that, Vaghela led a coup against Patel and flew about 45 supporting MLAs to Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, where Congress’ Digvijaya Singh was the Chief Minister. In 1996, Vaghela broke out of the BJP and started his own political outfit Rashtriya Janta Party, and formed the government in Gujarat in coalition with the Congress.

However, Vaghela’s reign as chief minister was short-lived. Elections were held in February-March 1998 and BJP again came to power. Right after the earthquake which hit Gujarat in January 2001, there was a tremendous wave of anger against Keshubhai Patel. There were allegations of corruption in the Patel government and people were unhappy for him not doing enough for those affected by the earthquake. In October, 2001, BJP replaced Patel with Mod as the Chief Minister of Gujarat to adress these issues.

While Modi led the rescue work, on 27th February, 2002, the Godhra carnage took place, followed by wide-spread riots. Modi was less than 5 months old as chief minister of a state, with not-so-friendly colleagues (as many were also Keshubhai loyalists, and some didn’t like working under such a junior leader). Neighbouring states, too, were hostile and did little to help curb the riots.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_25bEY7thE&w=560&h=315]

Despite things going wrong, in the Legislative Assembly, people of Gujarat yet again voted for the BJP in the assembly elections later that year. Except, this time, they were voting for Narendra Damodardas Modi. The BJP got 127 seats whereas Congress were reduced to 51 seats. In subsequent elections in 2007 and 2012, people voted for the BJP. As on today, the BJP stands at 120 out of 182 seats whereas Congress has been reduced to 43 seats after the exodus of Congress MLAs, including Shankersinh Vaghela and his son, to the BJP in August this year during the Rajya Sabha elections.

Congress, too, has had a dark history in Gujarat. One of the primary reason the BJP came to power with thumping majority was they promised the discrimination Congress was doing to communities because of vote bank politics. In the 1980s, Madhavsinh Solanki, father of current President of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, introduced the divisive “KHAM” (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslim) theory. The first half of the 1980s saw some of the worst inter-caste riots in Gujarat, which quickly escalated to communal riots. There was rise of crime, including bootlegging and don-wars. Don Latif flourished his bootlegging business, and getting rid of anti-social elements like Latif was the plank BJP used in 1995 which brought them to power.

However, with 20 years being in power, the state BJP seems to have peaked and reached a saturation point. Of these 20 odd years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister for little over 12 years. In the 3 years that Modi has moved to Centre, Gujarat has had 2 chief ministers.

The two years of Anandiben Patel were plagued with allegations of corruption, Patidar agitation, Dalit agitation and the omnipresent ‘Ben ne kuch nahin kiya’ was the reaction everyone had when asked about the new chief minister of Gujarat. After Anandiben’s unceremonious departure, Nitin Patel was second in command. He would have been the favoured choice for chief minister for two reasons: seniority and Patidar leader with stronghold in Mehsana, North Gujarat. However, even as Nitin Patel accepted congratulations from a news channel without formal announcement and had to face embarrassment as Vijay Rupani, an RSS leader from Rajkot and former Member of Parliament, was chosen as the Chief Minister.

Rupani, too, hasn’t had his share of criticism. He has been accused of being a rubber stamp chief minister who has little say in matters of governing the state. While Rupani has shown his unwavering loyalty towards Modi and the BJP, it is unfair to dismiss him such. He has 12 years of Modi’s ‘development model’ shadow and 2 years of Anandiben’s ‘corruption’ model to erase to make a space for himself as a genuine people’s person.

The issues, other than the personality clash, that will hound Rupani during the 2017 elections are lack of job opportunity in Gujarat, the unresolved Dalit and Patidar agitation issues and the mother of all – twenty long years of anti-incumbency. But what might work in his favour is lack of leadership, direction and credibility of Gujarat Congress and non-existence of Aam Aadmi Party. Hardik Patel has turned into a joke himself and no one except the Left-leaning mainstream media gives him any importance. Rumours are rife that another Dalit leader Alpesh Thakor might join either the BJP or Congress. That leaves us with Jignesh Mewani, former AAP leader and lawyer, who will not let the Dalit agitation die down. This, poses a serious threat since the mainstream media will pick it, even if he hasn’t picked up steam on ground, and discuss it on prime time.

People are unhappy with the colossal money spent on Narmada Mahotsav and Japanese PM Abe Shinzo’s visit when the roads of Ahmedabad are still full of potholes even 2 months after the devastating flood of July. Voter is not seeing the future of metro and bullet train. Voter is seeing the Corporation, which is led by the BJP, not doing anything, coupled with all other issues a common man is facing.

BJP Gujarat’s leaders seem far from ground reality and their social media presence seems limited to trending hashtags whenever there is a Modi visit to the state. On the other hand, Opposition has rolled up their sleeves.

There are a few social media campaign pages too, “Vikas Gaando Chhe” (Vikas has gone mad) mocking Modi’s “Vikas” plank. While it may or may not convert into votes for Congress, it will at least make people wonder if the BJP in Gujarat is capable of leading after Modi’s departure to Delhi.

Having said that, the BJP still stands more than fair chance of winning clear majority because Congress leaders in Gujarat have never been in power enough to be credible option. Along with that, Rahul Gandhi, who has ended up being an international embarrassment, doesn’t quite stand a chance with the enterprising Gujaratis.

While Gujarat Assembly elections may not end up as nail-biting climax as Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, we do expect a few twists and turns and a lot of drama.

Rumours of NDTV sale and some interesting share price graphs

0

NDTV has been in all sorts of trouble in recent times. The channel’s TRPs are at rock bottom, showing no signs of improvement. Its leading anchor Barkha Dutt left, in a not-so-cordial manner. NDTV’s tax troubles are here to stay. Even the founders of NDTV found themselves at the wrong end of a CBI raid. And of course, there is the recurring issue of fake news, which has become par for course for NDTV. In all this mess, sensible investors would prefer to jump ship before the channel hits the iceberg.

Today, Social media was abuzz with rumours that NDTV had been sold off to new investors:

While such unconfirmed rumours could have been ignored, one cannot ignore the very interesting and mysterious movements which NDTV’s shares had exhibited in the last few days. In fact, even before today’s rumours, many share market observers had noticed the erratic movement in share prices:

One of the websites to have noticed this, pgurus.com, had this to say:

Some say that when the shares in the stock market go below 10 percent, then with the consent of SEBI (Securities Exchange Board of India), the promoters can delist the shares and get off from the stringent SEBI and Stock Exchange Rules and Regulations. Now NDTV is facing several complaints in SEBI from investors for insider trading and stock exchange manipulation. But it may not be as easy as it sounds, to get the shares delisted. Moreover, the Enforcement Directorate is also probing the stock related trading complaints and money laundering aspects. Is NDTV expecting support from “big wigs” in the current government to escape from SEBI cases filed by minority shareholders like Sanjay Dutt and get the company delisted?

Independent market analyst Deepak Singh opined:

An 80% rally in a stock is huge. Speculators or Insiders may have ramped up the stock from 36 to 70 in anticipation of the sale of company. Historically – it has been seen that stock price movements precede major news flow announcement like promoter selling major stake egs Ranbaxy. On the other hand, other media companies have also risen. Thus it can also be thematic buying by investors too. But stock price movement does warrant this question.

Sooner or later, the truth will come out as NDTV files corporate information with the stock exchanges. Till then the market is open to speculation.

Know your Railways – Rolling Stock and Coaches

0

Indian Railways or as some call it the lifeline of India, runs 12,617 passenger trains everyday on its 115,883 KMs of track carrying 23 million passengers daily criss-crossing the length and breadth of the country over 7589 stations. In context, it moves the entire population of Australia everyday. Additionally, 7,421 freight trains carry 3 MT (Million Tonnes) freight everyday in almost 239,381 wagons and 9549 locomotive. Staggering numbers, isn’t it?

However, when you hear “Trains” in Indian context, what is the 1st picture that comes to your mind? Cranky blue metal pieces with iron railings jam packed with passengers standing in a crowded and filthy station? Well, that is how Indian railways has been, as long time we can remember. But why Indian Railways, which is rightly called the lifeline of India is caught in a time warp? We will try to explore in the 1st edition of this “Know Your Railways” series.

There are 2 primary aspect that I am going to cover. Why our trains are not aesthetically pleasing and why our trains are perennially late. The present article with focus on the 1st issue and we will cover the second problem which is closer to most of our hearts in the next edition. In upcoming editions we will discuss about solutions, future and of course “Bullet Trains”.

To figure out the 1st puzzle, let’s turn the pages of our history. The 1st train on Indian soil ran between Bombay (as it was called then) to Thane in 1853, on a track built by a British railway company called Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR). Since then, till 1955, the coaches of Indian railways used to be of wooden frame when the Swiss Car and Elevator Manufacturing Company, Switzerland designed the all Steel, integrated frame using the most advanced technology available at that time. The same company also helped establishing the ICF (Integral Coach factory) in Perambur, Chennai and that is how the coaches got their name, the “ICF” coaches.

An Old ICF coach

The coaches, no doubt, were one of the most advanced coaches of the 50’s but guess when was the next upgradation of the coaches in Indian Railway happened? 1995. Yes, that’s not a typo. For 43 years, there was never a significant technical upgradation to the coach structure or livery as the world moved from conventional loco hauled trains to Bullet trains and Maglevs.

In 1995, government for some reason decided to have a technology upgrade to the coaches and invited bids. That was the birth of the new Linke-Hoffmann Busch from Germany or LHB coaches as they are popularly known. They are made up of Steel plus Aluminium, they are lighter, designed for higher speeds upto 200 KMPH, have more passenger capacity, are relatively quieter, anti telescopic i.e. less prone to turn over or flip in case of an accident or derailment. They feature modular interiors which are more airy, have better hygiene, aesthetically pleasing and have a better finish with quality materials used for interiors.

A modern LHB rake

But, LHB still constitute only a minuscule percentage of Indian Railways rolling stocks, currently mainly used for marquee trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Tejas, Antyodaya, Humsafar and other premium trains. Most of IR rakes are still 1955 technology rolling on our tracks. The reason, as usual, is the “Chalta hai” attitude. There is no motivation. There is no competition. IR is the only rail company in India. Why would someone innovate when there is no incentive. As a result, the coaches today are a living example of bad workmanship, poor finish and total lack of imagination.

More than the good looking rakes, at a time when we read the news of a derailment almost every week, LHB coaches come as a blessing. They are anti-telescopic and won’t pile up, something which the ICF coaches are infamous for causing huge casualties. Compare the recent derailment of Utkal Express with Dibrugad Rajdhani derailment in June, 2014. In fact a statistics brought out by Indian Railways audit report says If a fast-moving train with ICF designed coaches derails, the deaths and injuries will be 25 times higher as compared to a train composed of LHB coaches.

Left – Utkal Express, Right – Dibrugarh Rajdhani

So you would wonder, if LHB coaches are so awesome then why not have all Indian Railways rakes constitute of LHB coaches? We have got manufacturing facility at RCF, Kapurthala and ICF also manufactures them. We have a upcoming facility at Rae Bareli. So why are we still producing those 1955 metal boxes. Well, as usual with any Indian public utility system, the solution is not so simple. ICF and LHB coaches use different coupling technics with ICF using a 60 year old Screw coupling, IR probably being the only large railway in the world still using this coupling technic. In fact, this is one of the main villain why ICF coaches pile up on each other in case of a derailment. LHB uses more advanced Centre Buffer Coupler(CBC) which is why LHB coaches have less jerk, allow more speed and do not turn turtle in case of a mishap.

Left – New CBC Coupling, Right – Screw Coupling

What the above means, for a non technically inclined reader is, you can not couple a LHB coach with an ICF coach i.e you can’t have a mixed rake. You can have a mixed type coach though, where a LHB shell is mounted on a ICF bogie, Duronto rakes for example.

A special note for for our media. What you keep calling bogies are not bogies. This is a bogie and what we travel on is called a coach.

Left – Modern LHB Bogie, Right – Old ICF Bogie

Hence, in an ICF rake, when a coach outlives it’s 25 years codal shelf life, it has to be replaced by an ICF coach only. You simply can not stop producing these metal boxes because you are already in a vicious cycle of maintaining a huge rake running on these boxes. While the previous governments have to be blamed with continuing with these stone age technology, it made absolutely no sense for the current government to introduce brand new trains with ICF rakes, the Mahamana Express introduced in 2016 between New Delhi and Varanasi or the Dindayalu express for example. It means, they made no effort to come out of the vicious cycle.

A Din Dayalu coach manufactured in 2016. (1st 2 digits in the coach number)

And that is not the only problem. IR has 7000 passenger trains & 42000 coaches. Keeping 5% as reserve, it leaves 6 coaches per rake. IR’s coach manufacturing units aren’t supplying enough. For that to happen, we have to come out of the PSU/ state owned manufacturing units mode and outsource coach manufacturing to people who specialise in that, Alstom or Bombardier for example who already have facilities in India. In fact Bibek Debroy committee report already suggested that IR should focus on it’s core business of running trains. Building locos and trains are specialised areas best left to specialists.

Of course there are other problems with IR than just “Looking Good” but this aspect will help regain at least some of the lost fame. Would you mind if your train looks like this and is 3 hours late. You would, of course but will still not curse IR as you do today, right?

The new rail minister Shri Piyush Goyal has said the manufacturing of ICF coaches is to be stopped completely. This would probably mean that now entire ageing rakes will be replaced by LHB rakes, lots of rake sharing has to change, lots of status quo has to be shaken. We wish Shri Goyal good luck with that. Hope it can be done sooner than 2040.
