Uttar Pradesh: Maulana Syed Mohammad Ashraf of Kichhauchha Dargah arrested for raping a female devotee from Mumbai, issued death threats to victim and her family

A 24-year-old young woman from Maharashtra’s Mumbai has reportedly been raped after visiting the Dargah in Ambedkarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The accused has been identified as a 50-year-old Maulana (cleric) named Syed Mohammad Ashraf of Kichhauchha region. The incident transpired on 7th March and the authorities arrested him on the next day after a case was submitted.

He is accused of instilling the fear of supernatural forces in the victim and committing the heinous crime. Afterwards, she was threatened that her entire family would be killed if she talked to anyone about it. The matter pertained to the Baskhari police station neighbourhood of Ambedkarnagar. Pilgrims from around the country travel to the popular Sharif Kichhauchhada Dargah. The woman who faced the shocking sexual violation was one of the devotees.

She came to Ambedkarnagar to visit the place with her family where she met the perpetrator who is also known as Shamshad inside the dargah. He first scared her in the name of evil spirits and then claimed to heal her with his spiritual powers. She was duped by his talks.

On the fateful day, the culprit took the woman to his room in the name of spiritual healing and sexually abused her after directing her family to stay outside under the pretence of religious medicinal practice. When she protested he threatened to kill her along with the rest of her family. The family members forced the door open after it remained closed for approximately an hour.

The woman sobbed and confided in them about the wrongdoings that had occurred as soon as the door opened. However, instead of apologising, the offender threatened them with dire consequences if anyone made a complaint regarding the instance.

Eventually, the woman mustered the courage to report him to the Baskhari police station in the area after which he was taken into custody and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered. He has been charged under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 (punishment for sexual assault), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation). He was apprehended by police on 8th March at around 9:00 in the morning from Jalalpur Road.

The woman has also undergone a medical examination. The issue is under investigation. The police have assured to conclude the probe into the case as soon as possible, file the charge sheet, and conduct the hearing in a fast-track court. According to the cops, steps are being taken to identify such individuals. Both the victim and the perpetrator are members of the same community.

Karan Morwal, expelled from Congress over rape accusations, seen with Rahul Gandhi and senior party leaders during Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

Controversial politician Karan Morwal, who was expelled from the Madhya Pradesh Congress over charges of rape, was recently seen with Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders, including former MP CM Digvijaya Singh, during the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Pictures shared by media organisation Times Now showed Karan Morwal sitting next to Rahul Gandhi during the Madhya Pradesh leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Earlier this week, on March 6, Karan shared photos of himself with Digvijay Singh and other Congress leaders. He mentioned that Digvijaya Singh had arrived in Badnagar to participate in Rahul Gandhi ji’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

“In the late hours, the former Chief Minister, Shri Digvijay Singh ji, arrived in Badnagar for Shri Rahul Gandhi ji’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. On this occasion, Raja Saheb interacted with the city’s businessmen as well as senior and junior members of the party, engaging in various discussions,” stated Karan Morwal.

In January of this year, Karan posted photos from the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, where he was pictured alongside Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari.

Karan Morwal was expelled from Congress in 2022 following rape charges filed against him

It is worth noting that Karan Morwal, the son of former Badnagar Congress MLA Murli Morwal, was expelled by the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) in 2022 for six years following rape charges filed against him.

In October 2021, Karan was arrested after a woman filed a rape complaint against him at the women’s police station in Indore, as reported by PTI. Police officials stated that a reward of ₹25,000 was announced for his arrest at that time.

Karan Morwal was arrested near Maksi town in Shajapur district in connection with a rape case that was filed on April 2, 2021, in Indore. Allegedly, the woman claimed that he raped her under the guise of marriage.

Upon his expulsion from the Congress, MPCC organization secretary Chandra Prabhash Shekhar issued a letter to Karan Morwal stating that the party had investigated the allegations against him. It was found that prima facie, the allegations appear to be true, although the case is still pending in the court of law.

Entire country discussing what TMC leaders did to women of Sandeshkhali: PM Modi launches scathing attack on TMC in Siliguri

0

Launching scathing attack on Trinamool Congress and opposition’s INDIA bloc, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that it does not affect West Bengal government when people are struggling or suffering and the “entire country is discussing what TMC leaders did to the Dalit and Adivasi women of Sandeshkhali”.

Addressing a gathering in Siliguri, PM Modi pointed out that to benefit the TMC’s ‘tolabaz’, 25 lakh fake job cards were created and given to the people.

“TMC government gives money to people chosen by ‘tolabaz’. It does not affect TMC when you are struggling or suffering. The entire country is discussing what TMC leaders did to the Dalit and Adivasi women of Sandeshkhali. Atrocities against women and to loot the hard-earned money of the poor this is what TMC’s ‘tolabaz’ do,” he said.

Further, hitting out at the TMC over release of MGNREGA wages (issue on which the Mamata Banerjee-led government has been protesting for a long time), PM Modi said that Centre sends the money from Delhi but TMC government looted it.

Exposing the malafide pratices of the TMC government, PM Modi said, “TMC government is looting you at every step. Modi sends the money for MNREGA wages from Delhi but the TMC government here has looted you at every step. To benefit the TMC’s ‘tolabaz’, 25 lakh fake job cards were created and given to the people. If Modi sends money to the poor’s houses, then the TMC government gives your money to the people chosen by ‘tolabaz’,”

The Prime Minister said that everyone in the country is able to see the problems in West Bengal but the irony is that, “First the left did not listen to you and then the TMC also ignored you. They were busy looting the land of the poor”.

“Therefore, when you gave me the opportunity I gave back all those facilities to you all. We gave free gas connections to the sisters under the Ujjwala scheme, but the TMC government is not even allowing Ujjwala gas connections to more than 14 lakh sisters. Yesterday on Women’s Day, we have taken another step that now the gas cylinder will become cheaper by Rs 100 more. The free ration scheme has also been extended for another five years,” he said.

Further, hitting out at the INDIA bloc, the Prime Minister said that the INDI Alliance of TMC, Congress and Left is also opposing giving you a free ration. Here in Bengal, the corrupt government has made a scam in your ration scheme itself.

“TMC, Congress and INDIA alliance has discriminated with the people of North Bengal. They have devoid this place of development. These people have deprived this area of development. Their leaders and ministers are in jail in the ration scam case. Here the government is not implementing the Ayushman scheme at all,” the Prime Minister said.

He also mentioned that the BJP is committed to fulfilling every aspirations and dream with peace and harmony that’s why after waiting for years, the Ram Temple has been built in Ayodhya.

“Article 370 has been removed from Jammu and Kashmir. There were many issues whose solution no one had even imagined but Modi has solved every such issue.

PM Modi emphasized that due to continuous work for the poor, 25 crore people have come out of poverty in 10 years.

“Modi is creating more and more opportunities for every poor but this is not liked at all by those family members who have come into politics only for power. Therefore, they hatch conspiracies to keep their family at the top of power. This alliance of TMC and Congress also does the same. TMC people are worried about their nephews, and Congress people have to promote the sons and daughters of their royal family. They do not care about you. If anyone cares for your future it is Modi, BJP and NDA,” he said.

“The door to remove TMC will open through Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections. Therefore, lotus should bloom on every Lok Sabha seat of North Bengal,” PM Modi urged voters to vote for the BJP.

“Win-win situation for Andhra”: TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu confirms BJP-TDP-Jana Sena alliance for Lok Sabha, Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh

On Saturday (9th March), TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu confirmed that the party has forged an alliance with the Bhartiya Janata Party for the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. In an off-the-record talk with a group of journalists, he noted that Andhra Pradesh has been destroyed badly. While lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he described the BJP-TDP alliance as a “win-win” situation for the country and the state.

Further, Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena is also an alliance partner of both parties for the upcoming polls and it has also joined the NDA camp.

BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda welcomed the parties in the NDA camp stating that leaders of the alliance are committed to the progress of the country and the upliftment of the state and people of Andhra Pradesh.

With this, the Telugu Desam Party has returned to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold six years after exiting it. As per News agency ANI, TDP MP Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar also confirmed that TDP is joining NDA.

Regarding the TDP-BJP-Jana Sena’s tripartite alliance for Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, TDP President Naidu asserted that it will be a “clean sweep”.

While the exact details on the seat-sharing formula is yet to be announced, according to media reports BJP could get 6 seats, JanaSena will field candidates on 2 seats while the remaining 17 seats in the state will go in the TDP kitty. As part of the deal, around 30 Assembly seats will be divided between Jana Sena and BJP. Andra Pradesh has 25 Lok Sabha and 175 Assembly constituencies.

A statement issued by BJP said that the modalities of seat sharing will be deliberated within a day or two. “We hope that the alliance will come up to the expectation of people of Andhra Pradesh with their wholehearted support of people at large,” the party stated.

The BJP said, “The BJP and TDP have a very old relationship together. TDP joined NDA in 1996 and has worked together successfully in Atal Ji’s and Narendra Modi Ji’s government. In 2014, the TDP and the BJP fought the Lok Sabha election and assembly election together. The JSP had supported the 2014 general and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.”

The confirmation of the tripartite alliance comes hours after TDP President Naidu held the second round of talks with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda on Saturday (9th March).

Notably, Lok Sabha and state assembly polls will be held simultaneously in Andhra Pradesh. Alliance negotiations had been ongoing between leaders of the three parties for several days and it resumed on Friday.

Earlier on Friday (8th March), Senior TDP leader and Rajya Sabha MP K Ravindra Kumar had admitted that the BJP, the Jana Sena, and his party have decided in principle to work together for upcoming polls adding that the modalities are being worked out.

While the TDP and BJP had been allies earlier, Chandrababu Naidu broke ties with the NDA in 2018, in a bid to combine a third front under his leadership. However, after the party’s crushing defeat, Naidu made efforts to again join the NDA camp.

PPP co-chairman and ruling alliance joint candidate Asif Ali Zardari elected as 14th President of Pakistan

0

Asif Ali Zardari, co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has been elected as Pakistan’s 14th President, Geo News reported.

Zardari became the head of the State for the second time as he served as the president from 2008 to 2013.

Zardari, the joint candidate of the ruling alliance, secured a remarkable 255 electoral votes in the parliamentary election, beating the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council candidate, Mahmood Khan Achakzai.

In contrast, Achakzai garnered 119 votes in the combined National Assembly and Senate, with only one vote being rejected in parliament, according to Geo News.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, in his post, announced, “In the presidential elections, his party’s candidate and father, Asif Ali Zardari, secured a total of 411 votes against the candidate backed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Mehmood Khan Achakzai, who only managed to garner 181 votes.”

In a post on X, the former foreign minister said Zardari received 255 votes from the National Assembly and Senate, 151 from the Sindh Assembly, 246 in Punjab, 17 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 47 in the Balochistan Assembly.

The results clearly favoured Zardari, leading to jubilant celebrations by PPP workers outside the Punjab Assembly. The victory dance to the beat of Dhol marked the party’s triumphant moment.

Zardari, the joint nominee of PPP and PML-N, and Achakzai from the Sunni Ittehad Council, were the contenders for the presidential office.

The president was chosen by an electoral college consisting of members from the Senate, the National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies. A joint session of the parliament was conducted at the parliament house in Islamabad, where members from both the National Assembly and the Senate exercised their franchise, according to ARY News.

Bulldozer action in Gujarat: Illegal constructions, including three madarsas, demolished in Kutch

In the border district of Kutch, efforts to clear encroachments on government land are ongoing. Recently, the local administration deployed bulldozers to demolish permanent structures erected through illegal encroachment in villages such as Jamkunaria and Kuran in the Bhuj taluka. Additionally, three madarsas built unlawfully on government land were also demolished during the operation.

In Jamkunaria and Kuran villages of Kutch, madarsas were demolished alongside other structures, including shops, hotels, and rooms, which were unlawfully constructed. This demolition operation extended to various villages such as Jamkunaria, Kuran, Raimavandh, and Dekanand. Before this, a total of 26 encroachments were cleared, comprising 24 on the Santri Kala Hill border and two in Dhrobana.

The administration, following a thorough survey and map analysis in Kutch, coordinated bulldozer operations with the assistance of police teams. Numerous police convoys were deployed during this initiative. It has been indicated that further actions are planned to address illegal constructions by identifying and marking additional encroachments. Moreover, it has been observed that certain locations where encroachments were removed were previously occupied by defiant individuals.

The bulldozer action also took place in Jamnagar on Friday

On Friday (8th March), the administration in Jamnagar demolished two bungalows unlawfully constructed by the notorious criminal Razzaq Saicha and his brother. The Jamnagar police and administration initiated bulldozer operations following a case of land grabbing registered against Razzaq and his brother, who are presently incarcerated. Situated in the Bedi area of Jamnagar, the two bungalows were entirely razed to the ground. Previously, in December, the government had also conducted bulldozer operations against Razzaq’s illicit constructions.

Bulldozer action continues in Kutch from the last week

In Kutch, the local administration remains vigilant in identifying and demolishing illegal encroachments. Just last week, encroachments near the dargah on the Mandvi beach were cleared. It was observed that the dargahs of Yusuf Shah Pir on the Maska border and Arif-e-Billah on the Gundiali border in Mandvi had exceeded the sanctioned limits and encroached upon the beach area. Despite prior notices from the administration ordering the removal of these encroachments within a specified timeframe, no action was taken. Consequently, the administration resorted to bulldozer operations to dismantle the unauthorized structures.

“Your hard work paid off”, PM tells a man in Srinagar: Read who is Modi’s ‘Host and Dost’ Ashraf Azad and how Modi went on a mission in Kashmir with him 3 decades ago

As part of the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu and Kashmir’ program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a Kashmir tour on Thursday (7th March) to inaugurate several development works in the valley. At the Srinagar airport, PM Modi was greeted by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh, and other senior officials. However, amidst the distinguished gathering, PM Modi took a moment to meet a 60-year-old man and inquire about his well-being and that of his family members.

On his return from Kashmir on the same day, PM Modi once again met with the same person at the Srinagar airport. During their second interaction, PM Modi appreciated his efforts, stating, “Azad Saheb, your hard work has paid off. Many people had come to the gathering.”

Ashraf Azad – more than 3 decades of friendship with PM Modi

At the Srinagar Airport, the man who met PM Modi was seen wearing a black kurta with a white beard and a saffron-coloured waistcoat, a tricolor turban on his head, and a BJP scarf on his shoulder. The 60-year-old man who surprised many with his presence was Ashraf Azad, known as the ‘Host and Kashmiri Dost’ of PM Modi and BJP’s 1st Muslim Leader from Valley.

Azad is a resident of Hakarmulla village in the Budgam district. He developed a friendship with BJP leader Narendra Modi long before Modi became the Prime Minister of India or the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Azad also hosted PM Modi at his home for several days when the BJP leader visited the valley over three decades ago, at a time when militant insurgency was at its peak.

BJP leader’s Tiranga Yatra that shaped Azad’s future course of action

In January 1992, as part of their Tiranga Yatra and to mark Republic Day, Narendra Modi along with the then BJP President Murli Manohar Joshi reached Lal Chowk in Srinagar to hoist the Indian flag. In those days, Kashmir was gripped by violent extremism and terrorism. Their courageous announcement to unfurl the Indian tricolour despite death threats from terrorists had surprised a 26-year-old youth who was back then reportedly associated with extremist organisations.

Amazed by the commitment and courage of BJP leaders, Mohammad Ashraf Hazam, also known as ‘Azad,’ went to Lal Chowk out of curiosity to see who the individuals were determined to embark on a suicide mission, risking their lives during the era of terrorism.

(Excerpts from Indian narrative article outlining PM Modi’s personal ground connect with Kashmir for more than 3 decades)

As BJP President Murali Manohar Joshi and his associates hoisted the flag at Lal Chowk, Ashraf Hazam ‘Azad’ saluted the Indian flag which caught the eye of BJP leader Narendra Modi who took him along to a guesthouse in Chashma Shahi. Modi was thrilled to know that at least one Kashmiri Muslim had joined his group, which was almost unimaginable during those days. There Narendra Modi introduced Ashraf to Joshi and others in his team.

The BJP leaders asked him if he would like to work for peace and welfare of Kashmir’s youths, and he agreed. Thus began his association with the BJP and he left his extremist leanings. Later, BJP leaders, including Narendra Modi, invited Azad to Delhi, where he met with Atal Bihari Vajpayee. A few months later, Narendra Modi returned to Srinagar and reunited with Azad, who then hired a private taxi and personally drove Modi to his village in the Budgam district.

Travelled from village to village in Kashmir for 10 days

Azad hosted Narendra Modi at his home in Hakermulla near Soibudh, which was dreaded for being the native village of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. They then embarked on a visit to every village in all the six districts of Kashmir for about 10 days without any security. According to Azad, Modi was then on a BJP-RSS mission, but he had presented himself as a human rights activist.

During his trip to villages in Kashmir, Modi remained as a nondescript BJP activist to study and survey separatism. On his way, Modi met hundreds of people in all six districts during his visit and took notes as a ‘social worker’ without arguing with anybody. Azad said that the villagers didn’t ask from which state he was from, and Narendra Modi also didn’t reveal the same.

Azad said in an interview to India Narrative, “We went to the top militant strongholds of Soibug in Budgam and Zoonarishi in Kupwara. We also visited Dargah Hazratbal, Jamia Masjid and many places in Srinagar. We went inside the University of Kashmir campuses where he chatted with the teachers and students. He introduced himself as ‘a social activist from our own Jammu Kashmir,’—some took him as a sympathiser from Jammu— listened to everybody with patience and took extensive notes without arguing with anybody.”

During the interactions with the villagers, Modi asked them about the reasons for their alienation from India and their political aspirations. Some people told him that nothing except Azadi (independence from India) would be acceptable for Kashmiris, while others wanted development, better roads, education, jobs etc.

Afterward, Azad joined the Bhartiya Janata Party and has been associated with the saffron party to date. He had campaigned for the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Srinagar-Budgam in 1996. He ciontested assembly polls on BJP ticket from Budam in 1996, 2002 and 2008.

In the interview published in January 2022, after the abrogation of Article 370, Ashraf Azad said that even though he didn’t receive any higher position or material benefit, he is happy that the mission that they started in 1992 has been accomplished to a great extent. “I beseeched the people of my Soibugh area to hate violence and forget about Salahuddin, who was in the village and left for Pakistan later in 1993. This village, which was the seat of Hizbul Mujahideen’s influence, donated 155 kanals of land free of cost on my request for Degree College, Sub District Hospital, Tehsil Office and Azad Bharat Stadium. A football playfield is coming up at Daharmuna”, Azad said.

Ashraf Azad has been meeting Narendra Modi regularly since their early association, even after Modi became Gujarat’s CM and then the PM of India. Talking about these meetings and PM Modi, he had said, “Every time we meet, he asks me about my family, neighbours and other residents of the area. I am sure no Indian politician matches Narendra Modi’s ground knowledge about Kashmir and its political conflict. It was not for nothing that he once told Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed at the public meeting in Srinagar that he didn’t need anybody’s advice on Kashmir”.

Taking to X, Kashmir’s independent journalist Ahmed Ali Fayyaz recalled about that tour in his social media post. According to him, Modi then talked to the people about their political aspirations, social and economic issues, development, history, etc.

According to Fayyaz, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Azad met again at Srinagar airport during the Lok Sabha election campaign in February 2019, both friends reminisced about their old days. On Thursday (7th March 2024), the two friends met again at the Srinagar airport and inquired about each other’s well-being. At the airport, PM Modi introduced Azad as his old friend.

Kerala CM orders CBI inquiry into the death of veterinary student who was found hanging in hostel after torture by SFI members

0

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of J S Sidharthan, a second-year veterinary student, after his family met him at his office.

Opposition parties and the father of the student had blamed the Student Federation of India (SFI) for the death of the student.

“The Chief Minister has ordered CBI enquiry into the death of Sidharthan, the second-year veterinary student in Pookkode after his family met CM at his office,” an official release said on Saturday.

Sidharthan was a student of Government Veterinary College, Pookkode in the state. According to police, he was found hanging in his hostel room on February 18.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan had suspended Vice Chancellor of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Dr MR Saseendranath in connection with the death of the veterinary student.

On March 1, T Jayaprakash, the father of the veterinary student, alleged that the death of his son seemed to be a “murder sponsored by the leaders and workers of the SFI.”

Talking to ANI, Jayaprakash said that one of the friends of Sidharthan informed him that the death of his son was “a well-planned murder” and that “brutal ragging” is regular in the college.

Sidharthan’s relatives told reporters that he was brutally attacked by a group of students inside the campus and it “is a case of murder and not suicide”.

Kerala Police had arrested six people in connection with the death of the student.

Following the government’s decision for a CBI probe, opposition parties ended their protest Mahila Congress president Jebi Mather, Youth Congress president Rahul Mamkootathil and KSU state President Aloshious Xavier were among those who were protesting over their demand for a CBI probe.

Tamil Nadu politician Sebastian Simon mocks Bharat Mata, claims there was no India before British rule, had earlier vowed to beat Hindi speakers

A video of Tamil Nadu-based-Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader, Sebastian Simon, mocking Bharat Mata and peddling lies about India’s history has gone viral on social media.

Popularly known as Seeman, the Tamil supremacist is infamous for his fundamentalist views and hate against Hindi speakers. During an event conducted a few weeks ago, Seeman attempted to erase the ancient history and rich civilisation of India.

“Where was India in our grandmother’s time? Where was your India during the time of my grandfather Pulithevan and Alagumuthukoan?” he was heard saying.

“Where was your Bharata Mata? ‘Pudunguna Matha’ (hell with Bharat Mata)” he mocked. Seeman then went on to claim that the Britishers named the land ‘India’ after defeating the natives of all provinces.

The ignorant politician continued, “This is my country. After defeating all of us, the white man named India the land he created by combining all the provinces,”

Seeman further claimed, “This was Tamil Nadu when my grandmother and grandfather were alive. What was India then? At that time, my grandmother did not say Bharat Matha Ki Jai, we only said Vetrivel Veeravel (war cry of lord Murugan).”

During the same speech, he also mocked Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai and dubbed him as ‘scared chicken’ for being assigned Z security by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sebastian Simon and his controversies

This is not the first time when Seeman stirred the hornet’s nest through his provocative comments. In the past, he has expressed strong support for the terror outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and its slain chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Seeman was previously booked for committing sedition and detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). In March 2023, he made headlines for abusing Hindi-speaking people and calling for violence against them.

“Hindi-speaking people will hastily pack their stuff and flee from this place. I don’t know how many I will beat. They will pack their belongings within a week,” the Tamil supremacist had threatened.

He was later booked by the police under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 153 (b) (c) and 506 (1).

While Mamata Banerjee claims West Bengal is the ‘safest’ place for women, here is how they are mistreated, harassed and victimised in her regime

Irony died and went to hell when West Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, after leading a procession on the eve of Women’s Day on Thursday (March 7) asserted that West Bengal is the safest State for women.

Claiming that the reports of atrocities on women at Sandeshkhali were misleading, Mamata said, “Bengal is the only place where women are safe, it is the safest place.”

What an astonishing paradox it is to witness that while Mamata Banerjee stood on a dias, that too on the eve of women’s day, making tall assertions about women’s safety and security in her state, the West Bengal police, working at her behest, on that very day, unlawfully detained BJP women leaders en route Sandeshkhali to meet the several local women who have been voicing their outrage against the institutionalised sexual exploitation, rape, property encroachment, and corruption they have suffered at the hands of the influential TMC leader and his goons.

In fact, BJP member and former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, who along with party state secretary Agnimitra Paul and Locket Chatterjee was detained on Thursday evening by the West Bengal police in the New Town area in Kolkata, took to X to inform how she was dragged, beaten and then illegally detained for hours. She posted a video of herself being physically assaulted by three female police officers, shoved into a police jeep, and taken to the police station.

Agnimitra Paul, BJP MLA representing Asansol South, said that the team only intended to visit areas in Sandeshkhali which remained outside the ambit of the prohibitory section. “Is section 144 imposed in Kolkata? On what grounds can the police stop our movement here?” she questioned.

The police and the TMC still have a lot to hide in Sandeshkhali even though a lot of the atrocities committed there have already been exposed, Locket Chatterjee, an MP from Hooghly, maintained.

BJP leader Falguni Patra, who was also part of the team, added, “We merely wanted to be on the side of the tormented women in Sandeshkhali who are still reeling under fear since musclemen of Shahjahan Sheikh are still at large and police are doing little to address their concerns.”

In these last two months, the state police, working at Mamata Banerjee’ behest, have been trying to do whatever it takes to hush up the matter, even if it means abusing, assaulting and mistreating the women victims or those who have been attempting to meet with the victims at Sandeshkhali.

The Sandehkhali issue has become a source of gnawing anxiety for the West Bengal government after it has been at the centre of protests since February with local residents, especially women coming out in huge numbers narrating the atrocities they have been subjected to by Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his aides who enjoyed political patronage and impunity from police action for all these days until the media unravelled the shocking truth.

Several such testimonies emerged as the Sandeshkhali issue snowballed. Women spoke of how their husbands were intimidated and threatened if they dared to protest against the sexual exploitation of their wives.

OpIndia had compiled 12 videos where victims narrated the ordeal faced by them.

According to Republic Bangla, the police accompanied the Trinamool Congress workers and harassed the women protesting against party goons Sheikh Shahjahan, Uttam Sardar, and Shibo Prasad Hazra.

Other residents of Sandeshkhali recounted the ill-treatment by the local cops. One woman was heard saying, “The police asked me if I sleep with other men. How could they ask me this? I need an answer. What wrong have I committed to be insulted with abuses like mother f*cker?”

“The police abused my husband as a ‘son of a pig.’ He was pulled out of the house. What crime did he commit? We need justice. Can the police personnel abuse someone like this?” she continued.

Recently when the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma visited the Sandeshkhali village, she also accused the state administration of suppressing the voice of the victims so that the truth would not come out.

In fact, the National Commission for Women (NCW) had also said in its report that its fact-finding team in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali found that women who spoke out against the atrocities faced reprisals.

“Our inquiry committee found that the victims in West Bengal are being threatened by local police, deterring them from coming out and reporting instances of sexual and physical harassment. Victims also recounted instances of physical and sexual violence perpetrated by both police officers and members of the TMC.”

“Disturbing testimonies gathered from women in the village painted a harrowing picture of widespread fear and systematic abuse. Victims in Sandeshkhali recounted instances of physical and sexual violence perpetrated by both police officers and members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC),” the NCW report read.

Speaking further about the West Bengal police excesses, on March 6, BJP leaders alleged that the West Bengal police tried to stop a few buses in which women of Sandeshkhali were travelling to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in West Bengal’s Barasat citing ‘security protocol’.

The state BJP made arrangements for buses to take the women of Sandeshkhali, who were allegedly tortured by suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his aides, to the rally venue, around 80 km away.

“The buses were first stopped at the Biswa Bangla Gate in New Town, and then again at Airport Gate 1 on the way to Barasat, citing security protocol. The police are trying to stop us from going to the PM’s rally,” a BJP leader on one of the buses alleged.

On March 9, Calcutta HC gave a nod to 80 women from Sandeshkhali to file affidavits. This came after advocate Priyanka Tibrewal, who was representing the group of women victims of Sandeshkhali, said that these women had wanted to file their complaints earlier but were not allowed by the local police.

Tibrewal said, “These women had wanted to file a complaint but police did not allow them. I mentioned that before the Honourable High Court. The Chief Justice allowed them to file an application before the court.”

The West Bengal police’s conduct towards the Sandeshkhali women victims or those who wished to reach out to them has been certainly appalling, but not shocking. This is the harsh reality of West Bengal. While Mamata Banerjee makes tall claims of women being the safest in her state, there are multiple instances where women have been mistreated; harassed and victimised in the mafia rule of the TMC government led by her.

The Governor of West Bengal has recently reiterated these same facts. Upon hearing the stories of the victimised women and their relatives in Sandeshkhali, Governor C V Ananda Bose became deeply emotional and burst into anger, “What I saw was ghastly, shocking, shattering to my senses. I saw something I should never have seen; I heard many things I should never have heard. I cannot believe this could happen in Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore’s land,” he lamented.

One wonders what rational people think of West Bengal’s growing rate of horrific criminality against women. It is despicable and inhumane that politicians who win support by making lofty promises then take advantage of weak and helpless women; and Mamata Banerjee, the state’s chief minister, not only looks for ways to shield these criminals but also employs the state apparatus to silence voices that dare to speak against her ‘jungle raj’.

West Bengal’s disturbing legacy of post-poll violence had shown its macabre face once again and that time too it were the women in the state who bore the brunt of the violence in the worst possible way.

Following the Assembly elections in May 2021, the state of West Bengal saw phenomenal anarchy and bloodshed. Several BJP activists were attacked, intimidated, and killed during the Trinamool Congress-sponsored bloodbath. After the Trinamool Congress (TMC) won the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha elections, party thugs went mad and attacked BJP members in the state.

On May 30, 2021, the Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA) has submitted a report on the post-poll violence in West Bengal where they have documented the concerted campaign against opposition party workers by the cadres of the Trinamool Congress. The report documented several instances of sexual assault on women by TMC cadres due to political motivations.

How women in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal were victimised after Assembly elections in May 2021

OpIndia had also reached out to some of the victims of the violence and spoke with them about their horrific experiences, which they claim were overtly sponsored by West Bengal’s state apparatus. We were told how TMC men had gone on a killing, arson, and raping spree against Hindus. Several victims had spoken to journalists about the sexual exploitation and the rape they had been subjected to at the hands of TMC goons after Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory in Assembly Elections. During the violence itself, the police were woefully unavailable. They had refused to take action against the TMC goons.

OpIndia had spoken to one such victim who was gang-raped in front of her father by goons who demanded “Hindu women” specifically. While she came on record, there were several who could not. First, they were already in fear. Second, they knew that they had to live and survive in the very area where even the police would protect the goons who tormented them. Having no avenue to safeguard themselves, the victims refused to come on record and file complaints. As such, those stories would forever remain buried because, without any evidence or victim testimony, it would be impossible to report.

The West Bengal Police labelled some of the unsettling instances that spread via social media as ‘fake’, or normalised them as part of the post-election process, but the voices continued to linger.

report by Organiser also penned down the horrifying story of a few of such women, who had to pay the price of supporting BJP in Mamata’s West Bengal.

BJP polling agent from West Bengal Pinky Baj recounts the atrocities inflicted on her family by TMC cadres. In her complaint to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, New Delhi, one Pinky Baj (34), resident of Jaygram, village, North Parganas, West Bengal, revealed the horror that unfolded on May 2, when Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress returned to power in the state.

Pinky alleged that around 7:30 pm on May 2, around 50 TMC goons led by Mujaffar Baidya, Mahabur Baidya, Akhar Bhagi, Aja Mullah, Labawali Gazi and others barged into her house. “They started abusing me in the filthiest language. They started beating us with bamboo sticks, iron rods, their bare hands, and destroyed each and everything in the house and looted items worth 3 lakhs.”

“Jaisi tumhari Hindu devi maa Kaali n*ngi hai.. waise hi tumko n*nga karenge (the way your Hindu devi Kaali is naked, we will make you naked as well)”, they attacked my religious belief by abusing my God, lamented the BJP worker. She alleged that they hurled filthy abuses at her and threatened to rape her and also hurled sexually explicit abuses towards Goddess Kaali and Lord Ram.

“They have tortured me physically, mentally and attacked my religious belief by abusing my God. It is such a humiliation that I cannot forget it ever in my life,” rued the BJP polling agent while narrating her horrific tale.

However, according to Organiser, the TMC goons had started harassing the BJP supporter much prior to May 2. In fact, on April 17, Pinky, who belongs to the schedule caste community, was present at the polling booth, when the TMC cadres approached her and started hurling casteist abuses at her. Using extremely derogatory language against her, the TMC goons threatened to rape and thereafter shoot her when their party comes back to power.

BJP worker Aparna Das raped, poisoned by TMC goons in West Bengal during post-poll violence

Likewise, BJP worker Aparna Das, resident of Barotola in Khejuri Vidhan Sabha also left her village due to the constant harassment she was subjected to by the TMC goons. Recalling how TMC goons raped and poisoned her, Das said she would return to her village after 5 years if the BJP forms the government in Bengal.

BJP worker daughter gang-raped on gun point in front of the father

Likewise, Diya Guha (21) from Birbhum, alleged that on May 2, local TMC leader Mamul Sheikh, and 10 to 12 other TMC goons belonging to the Muslim community barged into her house where she lives with her father, a BJP worker, and started thrashing everyone.

“They tore my clothes and when my father tried to save me, they beat him up brutally and said, “Nahi hum logon ko tu nahi chahiye.. teri beti chahiye .. hum logon ko Hindu ladki chahiye. (We don’t want you we want your daughter. We want a Hindu girl)”.

The report by Organiser further says that these TMC goons then took turns to rape the 21-year-old woman in front of her father, who was held on gun point. 7 men violated the girl one after the other, while her helpless father looked on.

TMC goons sexually assault BJP supporter from Haldipara village, Purba Bardhaman

“I am a BJP supporter, and due to this fact alone TMC goons stormed into my house to punish me and beat me up with dandas and their bare fists. They tore my saree, my blouse, and assaulted my breasts with a knife multiple times. They kept touching my private parts,” lamented one Pratima Das, from Haldipara village, Purba Bardhaman. She said that she has been kept in confinement in her own house for days now, as the TMC goons have cordoned off the whole area not allowing anyone to go out or enter the village.

This report covers just a tiny fraction of the overall situation that daunts the women of West Bengal. An outline of the horrors that a few of the countless destitute Hindu women in West Bengal have faced under Mamata’s regime.

Presently, we are left with a series of questions: Has West Bengal’s law and order collapsed to such an extent that victimised women feel compelled to look for justice outside of the state? Is Bengal, the state that boasts of having the most female MLAs in a state assembly, having a woman as chief minister, and being the “safest” state for women, content to stand by like a mute spectator and watch these horrors happen to its women? Will the civil society of Bengal also be politicised like the police force? Will the people of Bengal, who are steadfast in condemning crimes against women all across the globe, take cognisance of what is happening in their own backyard and demand an answer from the government that they brought to power for the third consecutive term?

Violence against women in West Bengal extends beyond politics. It’s a serious human rights issue here. If nothing is done quickly, soon enough the politicking would take precedence and the women would be left to fend for themselves.
