Pro-monarchy protests erupt in Nepal, police use water canons and tear gas; read how this demand emerged in the once-Hindu nation

On Thursday (23rd November), thousands of Nepals took to the streets, demanding the restoration of the Hindu monarchy. Subsequently, law enforcement resorted to deploying water cannons and tear gas to scatter supporters of businessman Durga Prasai, as per reports.

The situation required the firing of numerous rounds of tear gas for control. The police reported that the gathering made an attempt to breach the designated demonstration area.

It is noteworthy that a prominent businessman named Durga Prasai, has been mobilising people through his ‘Nation, Nationality, Religion-Culture, and Citizen Rescue Campaign.’ Prasai advocates for the improvement of Nepal, calling for the dissolution of the current government and the restoration of the monarchy, along with the re-establishment of the Hindu Kingdom, as it was till 2006.

The police have levelled accusations against Prasai, alleging that he incited the crowd. Following Prasai’s departure from the scene after addressing the protest at Balkhu, protesters purportedly hurled stones at security personnel. Earlier in the day, there was a clash between members of CPN-UML’s youth wing and Prasai’s supporters during a protest in Kathmandu’s Balkhu area.

CPN-UML stands for the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist-Leninist. It is a political party in Nepal that follows a Marxist-Leninist ideology. Upon the arrival of UML cadres during a motorcycle rally, Prasai’s supporters reportedly threw stones, causing damage to both vehicles used by demonstrators and those parked along the roadside.

This week, the Kathmandu district administration imposed a month-long prohibition on protests along the Maitighar to Baneshwar road section, as both factions planned demonstrations in the same areas. They were directed to conduct their protests outside the Ring Road. Following suit, the Lalitpur district administration also declared specific areas off-limits for protests over a three-month period.

Nepal was the only Hindu nation before abolishing the Hindu monarchy

Nepal held a unique position as the sole Hindu nation before the historic decision to abolish the Hindu monarchy. For centuries, the country’s identity was deeply intertwined with Hinduism, and the monarchy played a central role in upholding and preserving this cultural and religious heritage. The formal abolition in 2008 marked a profound shift, not only in Nepal’s political structure but also in its status as a Hindu state. This significant departure from tradition was influenced by China and leftist ideology.

In the early 21st century, Nepal witnessed a seismic shift in its political landscape, culminating in the abolition of the Hindu monarchy. The Maoist insurgency, rooted in Marxist-Leninist ideology and influenced by China-backed Maoist principles, sought to replace the constitutional monarchy with a People’s Republic.

After years of conflict, a peace agreement between the Maoists and the government was reached in 2006, setting the stage for the formal abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of Nepal as a federal democratic republic in 2008. This transition marked the end of the centuries-old Shah dynasty’s rule and reflected a move towards democratic governance.

Influence of China and leftist ideology on the new regime

China’s influence played a role in shaping Nepal’s political trajectory, as it supported leftist ideologies aligned with its interests. The geopolitical dynamics in the region contributed to the realignment of Nepal’s political identity, with China-backed leftists driving significant changes.

The abolition of the monarchy symbolized a complex interplay of domestic political forces and regional influences, highlighting the evolving geopolitical landscape in South Asia. The events leading to this transformation underscored the impact of China-backed ideologies on Nepal’s political evolution, ultimately reshaping the country’s governance structure.

The most noted impact of this policy was increasing the distance between Kathmandu and Delhi. India being a Hindu-majority neighbour of Nepal had historically been a natural ally; but during the years of China’s influence, the diplomatic ties hit a historic low. Narendra Modi chose Nepal as the first nation to visit after assuming the Prime Ministerial responsibilities in 2014. Since then, the relations between the two countries are continuously improving.

Now, a considerable number of people in Nepal want the Hindu monarchy back

The shift away from Nepal’s Hindu monarchy and the rise of left-leaning ideologies has left the Nepalis discontented, with many expressing a desire for the reinstatement of the Hindu monarchy. the former King of Nepal, Gyanendra Shah has also joined the campaign with this demand. The embrace of leftist principles has resulted in the erosion of Nepal’s cultural heritage and traditional identity, the protesters believe. The monarchy served as a unifying force, preserving the nation’s rich Hindu practices and providing a bedrock for the Dharmik way of life. The removal of the monarchy has led to an unnecessary dilution of these cultural elements, contributing to a sense of disconnect among the people of Nepal, the pro-monarchy voices have stated.

Supporters of the Hindu monarchy believe that reinstating the monarchy would not only safeguard Nepal’s cultural and religious traditions but also contribute to the overall well-being of the country. Advocates argue that a constitutional monarchy, firmly rooted in Hindu principles, could play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance between modernisation and the preservation of Nepal’s unique heritage, offering a pathway to progress that aligns with the nation’s historical values.

The FIR has been filed by an activist identified as Pandit Keshav who alleged that Marsh’s actions of positioning his legs on the World Cup trophy had deeply offended the sentiments of Indian cricket team fans.

Pandit Keshav also forwarded a copy of the complaint to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting that the Australian player should not be allowed to play cricket in India.

Earlier, Shami criticized the Australian cricketer for the disapproving gesture. “I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy,” he was quoted as saying on 23rd November.

PM Modi on 19th November consoled and boosted the Indian players after the country lost the match to Australia for 7 wickets. Agra youth Fuqran arrested from Delhi for eloping with a Hindu girl after befriending her on Instagram

An alleged case of love jihad has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra where the daughter of a Hindu cold storage facility owner was tricked into falling into a love trap by Furqan, a leather belt maker who initially befriended her on Instagram, reported Jagran. Kamla Nagar police filed a case after being notified of the incident by her father and arrested the accused within three days as well as recovered the 19-year-old girl from Delhi.

According to the young woman’s relatives, the accused had also committed the same crime a year prior, but the police found them and settled the matter. She is a resident of Kamla Nagar while the perpetrator is from Achhnera. She is pursuing her studies in a different state and had returned home on vacation after which she went missing on the evening of 19 November. As per reports, Furqan lured her into a relationship with him after making friends with her on the popular social media app Instagram.

The grandfather of the girl lodged a police complaint and opened a case against the culprit, his father Salim and his brother. Following this, the police launched a probe and traced the girl to Delhi using her phone number. She was brought back from the national capital and Furqan was apprehended by cops. Anand Veer, the in-charge of the police station stated that her statement would be entered into the court record following her medical examination.

The girl and Furqan became Instagram friends two years ago. She was relocated to another state to continue her studies when her family discovered the conversation between the two and forbade her from accessing the app. However, when the girl came home during vacation, he lured her and took her away with him to Delhi on 19 November.

Notably, the offender had taken the girl away in a similar manner a year prior. However, the authorities found her and did not register any case after the two sides came to an agreement. She was a minor at the time and he would have been booked under many serious sections including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The instance is being related to love jihad online.

KCR only accumulated corruption money for his son, did nothing for the state: Home Minister Amit Shah in Telangana

0

Launching a blistering attack on the BRS government in poll-bound Telangana, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday claimed Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao did nothing in his 10-year rule other than indulging in corruption for his son and state minister KT Rama Rao.

Addressing a rally in Armoor city in the Nizamabad district of Telangana on Friday, the Union Minister said all those found guilty of corruption in the state will be brought to book if the BJP is elected.

“KCR hasn’t fulfilled any of the promises he made to the people of the state. He didn’t do anything other than misappropriate thousands of crores in corruption money for his son, KTR. If elected, the BJP will set up an inquiry commission to look into all the scams and frauds committed by KCR. Every single found guilty of corruption will be put in jail,” Shah said.

He alleged that KCR’s party gave tickets to the people involved in corruption cases, adding that the BRS ‘trades party tickets’.

“The BRS legislators seized government land allocated for building bus depots for the convenience of commuters and raised shopping malls instead. Why did KCR give tickets to such MLAs? It is because the BRS trades party tickets,” he said.

In a further swipe at the BRS chief, the Union Home Minister said the latter doesn’t celebrate the Hyderabad Liberation Day for fear of ruffling the feathers of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.

“Due to the fear of Razakars (a Muslim section) and Owaisi (Asaduddin Owaisi), KCR doesn’t celebrate the Hyderabad Liberation Day. However, Modi-ji has decided that the Hyderabad Liberation Day will be celebrated with much fervour every year if we are voted to power,” he added.

Shah said the culprits behind the question paper leak shall also be identified and put behind bars.

“In the last seven years, exam papers in six categories under Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) were leaked. We have decided that we will give jobs on merit to 2.5 lakh youth of Telangana. Those accused in the paper leak incidents will also be identified and put behind bars,” Shah said.

He also promised a National Turmeric Board in the state if the BJP is elected. “PM Narendra Modi has promised to set up a National Turmeric Board here so that the turmeric farmers get fair remuneration for their produce, build a value chain, and increase exports. We will also encourage research in medicines made from turmeric,” he added.

The state is set to witness a triangular contest between the ruling Bharat Rasthtra Samithi, Congress and BJP in the November 30 polls while the votes will be counted on December 3.

In the previous Assembly election in 2018, the BRS, previously known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), won 88 of the 119 seats, grabbing 47.4 per cent of the total vote share.

The Congress came in a distant second with just 19 seats.

Kerala: 3 madarsa teachers arrested for sexually assaulting students; Islamic preacher caught for sexually abusing a boy

0

Two shocking cases of sexual exploitation of young children at the hands of Islamic preachers have come to light in the state of Kerala. In the first incident, three madrasa teachers one of whom is from Uttar Pradesh, have been arrested by Nedumangad police. On 18 November, the authorities informed that were arrested on charges of sexual assault on minor students.

The accused were identified as 24-year-old L Siddique from Kadackal Kanjirathummoodu Bismi Bhavan, 28-year-old S Muhammed Shameer from Jasmin Villa near Karibah Auditorium and 30-year-old Muhammad Rasalal Haq from Ganeshpur in Uttar Pradesh Kheri district. The three used the pretence of a madarsa to exploit the youngsters and expose them to unnatural sexual violations.

The operation was undertaken after a complaint was lodged by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The Juvenile Justice Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and pertinent Indian Penal Code sections were invoked to register the case against the culprits.

They have spent the last year operating a madrasa in Nedumangad. District Superintendent of Police Kiran Narayanan oversaw the arrest of the offenders after Kattakkada Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP) N Shibu, Nedumangad Station House Officer (SHO) A Sunil, Sub-Inspector (SI) Suresh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shaji, Rajith, Senior Civil Police Officers (SCPO) C Biju, Deepa and Civil Police Officer (CPO) Ajit Mohan received a tip from the CWC about their horrific crimes against the victims who were attending the institution for religious studies. The trio was sent on remand after being presented in court.

Meanwhile, The Vazhikadavu Police nabbed an Islamic preacher named Puthukkadavu Muhammad Shakir also known as Shakir Baquavi Mampad in Malappuram on 22 November after he was accused of molesting a young kid for a year.

The youngster told his teacher about the abuse on 21 November and after receiving a complaint, cops acted promptly to make an arrest. Manoj Parayatta, Station House Officer of Vazhikadavu Police informed, “We received the complaint against Shakir on Tuesday. The boy told his teacher about the abuse from Shakir. We wasted no time and nabbed him from his house.”

The assault continued for a year and the perpetrator also threatened the victim to keep the horrible occurrences a secret. Furthermore, the investigative squad is going to probe the culprit’s possible prior involvement in a similar crime. He’s been placed under judicial custody and the boy would receive counseling at the school, according to the officials.

The preacher has a strong social media following, with more than 23,000 Facebook followers and over 8,000 YouTube subscribers. His lectures are centred around religion and family.

Turkeys are not vegan: PETA’s non-stop preaching ahead of Thanksgiving gets ‘fact-checked’ by community notes on X

Thanksgiving is a major national holiday in the United States and Canada that is observed with gusto. The first image that springs to mind when one thinks of Thanksgiving is a turkey; Thanksgiving celebrations are incomplete without eating turkey. While Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate the harvest season and show gratitude for the year’s blessings, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) faced some serious embarrassment this year.

On November 23, PETA took to X to preach to people not to eat turkeys on Thanksgiving and posted an illogical illustration of a ‘family’ of turkeys holding ‘hands’ while sitting around a table set for dinner. The turkeys wear clothing yet preserve their facial traits. In the centre, a plate of roasted human meat on a bed of salad in the centre of the table where the cooked turkey would normally be put is seen. The main dish is surrounded by several dishes.

Along with this illustration, PETA wrote, “We’re lucky turkeys would never do this to us—you don’t have to do it to them, either.”

Soon after, an X Community Note was added to the said post, which stated that contrary to PETA’s assertion that turkeys would never eat human meat, turkeys are omnivorous and can eat anything they can fit in their mouth, and that if they were larger in size and had the necessary means to farm and eat human meat, they would most probably do so.

According to the article linked with the Community Note, Turkeys are omnivorous and will eat insects, spiders, grubs, mice, lizards, seeds, acorns, fruits, grasses, and forbs. The article goes on to say that an “aggressive tom may charge at the person, chase them, or even attempt to attack by flapping its wings, pecking, or spurring.”

Along with the ironic Community Note, PETA’s X post also received numerous critical and even sarcastic responses with many calling out PETA for suggesting that Turkeys would never eat humans.

One X user wrote, “Looks like we need to get them before they get us. Good PSA.”

Another one replied, “That’s why I like my place on the food chain, at the top. I also don’t swim in the ocean or go beating around the jungle with a pork chop tied around my neck. Humans are omnivores. You don’t have to eat meat. You don’t get to make that choice for anyone else.”

One Derrik Behler wrote, “We aren’t lucky. We are better, smarter, more valuable, and a higher form of life.”

Another X user wrote, “Best community notes ever??”, commenting on the community note added to the PETA post.

One Lucas wrote, “Speak for yourself! I love getting spit roasted!”

Another one wrote, “The community note is sending me [face with tears of joy emoji].”

One “Squirrel Mob” wrote, “Lol PETA has been making metal album covers for the last decade.”

Another one wrote, “What do we have to do to get Peta shut down already?”

Notably, PETA was conducting a ThanksVegan campaign in the United States with “turkey showgirls,” star-studded messages to make people celebrate a ‘vegan’ Thanksgiving holiday and “give birds a break”.

PETA’s habit of preaching veganism on festive occasions is not new. Its Indian outfit PETA India is notorious for giving sermons on Hindu festivals. PETA India has a history of shaming Hindu festivals and how they are celebrated. In the past, during Holi, it has urged Hindus to refrain from applying colours at animals and instead opt for vegan thandai. It has also urged Hindus to refrain from lighting fireworks during Diwali in order not to ‘scare’ the animals. However, their determination to promote veganism and protect animals vanishes on Islamic festivals like Bakrid. In a rare display of courage to stand against animal sacrifice on Bakri Eid in Bhopal in 2014, the PETA activists were allegedly assaulted by a mob.

Punjab: Children from Muslim community throw toilet cleaner on women in Hindu Shobha Yatra in Nabha, complained filed

0

On Thursday (23rd November), the Hindu women who participated in the Khatu Sham Yatra in the Nabha region of Punjab’s Patiala district were mistreated by a group of children from the Muslim community. The children threw toilet cleaner on the women after which the latter is said to have developed some serious allergy.

According to the reports, the Hindu community in Nabha had organized a Shobha Yatra on the occasion of Khatu Sham Janmotsav. Hundreds of Hindus participated in the rally and celebrated the occasion together in Nabha.

However, some of the women participating in the rally were mistreated by Muslim children as the rally reached the Sadar Bazar area. The children from lshop belonging to an individual from the Muslim community collected the toilet cleaner from the nearby toilet and threw at the women, causing them rashes and allergies.

The Nabha Police took cognizance of the incident and filed a complaint in the matter. The Nabha SHO confirmed the incident in a video posted by Patiala Police and said that the children belonged to the Muslim community.

“The rally was peacefully passing through the Sadar Bazar area. Some children belonging to the Muslim community threw toilet cleaner at the women from the rally. The children threw the cleaner from a shop that belonged to a Muslim individual. The children were supposedly his relatives. The women have developed severe allergies. No rumors should be spread. Probe underway in this case,” the SHO stated.

He also said that the Police must immediately be informed if something like this happens. “I request people to maintain peace and stop spreading any rumors in this case,” he added.

Rajasthan: Rajdeep Sardesai follows Congress’s campaign trail. Here are the 8 “difficult questions” he asked

TV presenter Rajdeep Sardesai is on the ground with “elections on his plate” to follow the campaign trail, which looks more like the Congress trail, or safe to say, the ‘any party but BJP’ trail. The only questions that Rajdeep Sardesai managed to ask in his on-the-go interviews with leaders of Opposition parties and sometimes, the people, were based on what the BJP said and on songs. Yes, songs.

In a video from one such interview now going viral on social media, Sardesai is seen sitting with Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and singing a song while asking the latter a question.

For the first time since its inception when the Congress is facing scrutiny from the country at large with demands for accountability, Rajdeep Sardesai towards the end of his interview with Gehlot asked that he has heard that the CM takes interest in Hindi songs.

“When Ashok ji is alone with family at home, not surrounded by anyone, What does he like to listen to?” Sardesai asked critically. Gehlot said he likes listening to old songs. Dissatisfied with a half-hearted answer, Sardesai tweaked his question. He asked, “I am trying to know that there must be something about Ashok Gehlot that the people don’t know.”

Gehlot said it is the same thing about music. Still unable to prove his bonhomie with the Congress, Sardesai rephrased the question, again, as he asked, “Your journey has been very…You have come from a small family in Jodhpur and you have reached to this point today. What has been the biggest challenge before you in all these years?

The Rajasthan CM replied saying, “Nothing, just wanted to work and all priorities were left behind and political activity and the desire to serve was there since childhood.” Naturally, Sardesai’s emo questions appeared as a cue for the Congress leader to paint an image for himself ahead of voting day.

“So 24×7 neta (politician)? You will be a politician for life? No tired, no retired?” Sardesai asked with a broad smile. When Gehlot replied saying that he intends to do service till his last breath, Rajdeep Sardesai broke into an old Hindi song, perhaps to Gehlot’s liking, out of nowhere.

Sardesai recited the tunes of the song “Zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain” from the 1974 movie “Aap ki kasam” and asked Gehlot whether he remembers that song. Gehlot shrugged with a grin when Sardesai cracked another tune of the song “Musafir hoon yaaron” from the movie “Parichay.

The bonhomie was finally revealed when Sardesai said that India Today is travelling with Ashok Gehlot because the election is being fought by Congress in his name. He said, “Ashok ji you spoke to us, you are travelling across Rajasthan. The election is being contested in your name which is why we are with you because wherever are going, we can see your face. So Congress has given all its eggs to you for hatching.”

The wide smile on Ashok Gehlot’s face put a stamp on just the kind of validation the Congress seeks from its footmen in the mainstream media. Although the Rajasthan CM did not need the flattery coming from Sardesai, he was full of it himself.

This saga lasted only a few minutes towards the end of the interview. The first 30-plus minutes of the conversation were based on Sardesai’s questions about the political statements made by the BJP, the accusations made by the BJP, and the statements made by PM Modi. If Gehlot’s advisors had failed to brief him about the headlines, Sardesai was there to fill in the gaps.

In the interview with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the second last question that Sardesai asked the Congress leader was what change has she seen in herself in the 20 years of her political career. “Learned about the realities of politics,” Priyanka replied.

Finally, in the last question, Sardesai went back to a question about his favourite person, PM Modi. He pointed at the camera and told Priyanka that Modi ji is there (as if he is seeing her live from the India Today camera). “What will you say to BJP who say that you are only seen during elections?” he asked.

Priyanka said that that is their perception and not hers.

Sardesai also visited the campus of Rajasthan University where he assembled a bunch of students outside the Central Library. Speaking to them about the paper leak controversy that has gripped Rajasthan, Sardesai was faced with stark criticism against the Gehlot government and the entire administration.

To balance the equation for the sake of balanced journalism, Sardesai crafted a question, asking, “So you are saying the entire system has been captured. Are the Congress, BJP both responsible because paper leaks also happened when there was Vasundhara Raje’s government and it is happening in the Ashok Gehlot government too?”

While some students said both are responsible, others said the paper leak cases have risen under the Congress government. “Those in the system themselves are leaking papers,” a student said.

Another student, who appeared to have seen through Sardesai’s motivated question, replied saying that let’s talk about who is responsible for the present situation, no point talking about the past and the future.

“It is the government of the day that is responsible, there is nothing aage and peeche (ahead and behind). We will talk about the present-day government under which the paper leaks happened in this state, we will hold this state’s government responsible. What happened before, what happened in the neighbourhood, what have we got to do with that?” said the student.

Whether Rajdeep Sardesai captured the pulse of the nation from his armchair to ground election reportage is not for anyone to say, but he must surely have gotten the pulse of the nation, both on social media and on the ground, about the nature of his journalism for sure.

This is not the first time that the veteran journalist has pulled off such stunts. His soft corner for Congress is a widely known fact. In an interview with Sonia Gandhi in 2016, Sardesai’s questions bore less resemblence to the nature of a news interview and more to Simi Garewal’s talk-show “Rendezvous”.

Sardesai’s questions seemed directed not towards Congress leader Sonia Gandhi but towards Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-law. This was a perfect PR set up for the party two years after its abysmal loss to the BJP in 2014…alas it did nothing to help the Congress in 2019. Albeit, the current Congress trail of Rajdeep Sardesai proves that he is continuing on the same path with utmost loyalty.

Actor Mansoor Ali Khan apologises to Trisha Krishnan for his sexist comments fantasising rape and bedroom scenes with her

0

Actor Mansoor Ali Khan, who is facing backlash for his alleged misogynistic remarks against his ‘Leo’ co-star Trisha Krishnan, on Friday apologized to the actress.

Mansoor Ali Khan released a statement saying, “My co-actress Trisha, Forgive me. Let the god bless me by having me during your wedding.”

The All Women Police Station (AWPS) of Thousand Lights, Chennai, had issued summons to Mansoor Ali Khan for not appearing at the police station.

The Chennai City Police booked the actor for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Trisha Krishnan. The action was taken on an order to that effect by DGP Shankar Jiwal.

Earlier, the National Commission for Women took suo motu cognisance of the matter and issued directions to the Tamil Nadu police to register a case against the actor.

After summons were issued against him, Mansoor Ali Khan gave a statement asking for more time claiming that he was suffering from a throat infection.

The actor was booked under Sections 354 A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

A video of Mansoor Ali Khan from one of his interviews surfaced on social media, where he is purportedly heard saying that he hoped to have a rape scene in ‘Leo’ starring Trisha just like he had in older films with stars such as Khushboo and Roja.

“When I heard that I was acting with Trisha, I thought there would be a bedroom scene in the film. I thought that I could carry her to the bedroom just like I did with other actresses in my earlier movies. I have done rape scenes in a number of movies and it’s not new for me. But these guys didn’t even show Trisha to me on the sets during the Kashmir schedule,” Khan purportedly said.

Trisha and Mansoor Ali Khan don’t share screen space in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film ‘Leo’ but have pivotal roles in the film.

Responding to Khan’s remarks, Trisha took to microblogging site X to post, “A recent video has come to my notice where Mr. Mansoor Ali Khan has spoken about me in a vile and disgusting manner. I strongly condemn this and find it sexist, disrespectful, misogynistic, repulsive and in bad taste. He can keep wishing but I am grateful never to have shared screen space with someone as pathetic as him and I will make sure it never happens for the rest of my film career as well. People like him bring a bad name to mankind.”

NCW member and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar also hit out at the actor over his comments, posting on X, “Nobody can get away with such a filthy mind. I stand with @trishtrashers and my other colleagues where this man speaks in such a sexist disgusting mindset about them, including me. When we are fighting tooth & nail to protect women & bring dignity to them, such men are like a blot in our society.”
