Praveen Sood, the DGP of Karnataka, has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

The order said, “Approval of the Competent Authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Shri Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) consequent upon completion of his tenure.”

He was appointed the Karnataka DGP in 2020. His other stints include Superintendent of Police, Bellary, and Raichur before getting posted to Bangalore city as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.

Sood also worked as principal secretary of the Home Department, ADGP Karnataka State Reserve Police, and ADGP Administration. He was slated to retire in May 2024. However, with his appointment as the new Director of the CBI, he will now work for a tenure of two years, ensuring his presence in office until at least May 2025. It must be mentioned that an existing Director of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) can serve for a maximum period of 5 years and a minimum tenure of 2 years.

On May 13, a three-member panel consisting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition (Congress) in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury finalized the appointment of Mr. Sood as the new Director of CBI. The three-member committee chose the new CBI Director as the existing CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal’s tenure is slated to end in May 2023.

Maharashtra: Foreign cigarettes worth 24 crores seized by Revenue Intelligence in Mumbai, 5 individuals arrested

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai reported on Sunday that it has apprehended five people, including an importer, for attempting to smuggle 1.2 crore sticks of cigarettes of foreign origin, with an estimated market value of 24 crores. The agency informed that these cigarettes are prohibited because they do not meet the country’s prerequisite standards.

The items were taken from a container after an intelligence input. The shipment was intended to be trans-shipped to Arshiya Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) for further clearance.

The officials kept an eye on the container’s movement after getting the intelligence. It was discovered that the container, which had departed Navi Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port on its way to Arshiya FTWZ, had been rerouted to a private godown where it was subsequently seized by DRI officials.

The entire 40-foot container was discovered to be filled with foreign cigarettes of multiple brands which are not allowed to be imported in India.

The syndicate intended to deceive customs officers by taking the cigarettes out of the container and replacing them with commodities listed on import documents. Before the container was carried into Arshiya FTWZ, the godown was already packed with the stated goods that were meant to be placed inside once the cigarettes had been moved out.

In an immediate follow-up operation, another cache of 13 lakh foreign-origin cigarettes that had previously been smuggled by the same network was found in another godown.

USA: 13-year-old girl thwarts a shark attack at Florida beach, gets bitten in the stomach, arm, knee and finger

A brave 13-year-old girl named Ella Reed is on the mend after she courageously fought off a shark that attacked her at a Florida beach on Thursday. She was at Fort Pierce Beach, sitting in the shallow water next to a jetty when she suddenly felt a searing pain in her side and spotted the predator.

“The shark itself was so powerful. That was what I felt the most because it was hitting my stomach really hard,” she informed. She reported to have hit the bull shark, which was five to six feet long, causing it to briefly recede before approaching again.

The Florida native mentioned, “It wouldn’t leave me alone, so I had to use my arm and use my hand too, so it got my arm and my finger.”

The teenager yelled for her mother and brother who were at the beach with her as the water beast came closer to her again. “It was insane because she was totally covered in blood pretty much from head to toe so she couldn’t really see what went on. She was shaking, but she was calm,” noted her mother.

She was bitten on the top of her knee, arm, stomach, and finger and had to receive 19 stitches for her injuries.

“I was kinda in shock about everything that happened, so I wasn’t really in pain because the adrenaline was through the roof,” the teen girl remarked. She added that she is proud of her scars.

She asserted that she has never been frightened of the ocean and that she intends to return to the water following this incident. “It was clear water so you never really know when it’s going to happen,” she commented.

Florida is the shark bite capital of the world, according to the University of Florida’s international shark attack file. The region accounted for 16 of the 57 unprovoked shark bites documented in 2022. Shark attacks there led to two amputations last year.

The majority of unprovoked shark bites worldwide occurred in the US and Australia. Despite the fact that there were five fatal attacks in 2022, the statistics showed a decrease from 10 in 2020 and 9 in 2021.

“Generally speaking, the number of sharks in the world’s oceans has decreased, which may have contributed to recent lulls,” disclosed Gavin Naylor, of the Florida Museum of Natural History.

BJP turncoat Jagadish Shettar passes the buck after losing in Karnataka polls, blames ‘money power’

Hours after losing the Karnataka elections from the Hubli-Dharwad-Central constituency on a Congress ticket, Jagadish Shettar went on to blame the ‘money power’ and ‘pressure tactics’ of BJP for his unceremonious defeat.

Shettar, who was earlier a Minister in the cabinet of ex-Karnataka CM and BJP leader BS Yediyurappa, reportedly left the saffron party after being denied a ticket in the 2023 Karnataka elections.

“In the last six elections, I have not at all used any money power. I have not distributed any money to the voters. It is the first time that the BJP candidate has distributed ₹ 500-1000 to the voters,” he claimed.

“Money power and pressure tactics have affected my (candidature)…Money power can change a lot of things…There are a lot of business people and industrialists in the Hubbali constituency,” Jagadish Shettar alleged.

He further claimed that the loss of the BJP in the 2023 Karnataka Vidhan Sabha election is a setback for the Modi-Shah duo in the run-up to the 2024 General Elections.

“All of them targetted Jagdish Shettar, and what did that do? They lost the entire state…What did they achieve? Was defeating Jagdish Shettar the final goal?” the former BJP leader brazened it out.

Interestingly, Shettar’s allegations of the use of ‘money power’ and ‘pressure tactics’ come at a time when his new party aka Congress managed to ace the polls with a large margin.

Jagadish Shettar loses to BJP’s Mahesh Tenginakai

Jagadish Shettar won on a BJP ticket three times from the Hubli-Dharwad-Central seat during the 2008, 2013, and 2018 Vidhan Sabha elections. However, defecting to the Congress proved unfruitful as he lost out to his rival Mahesh Tenginakai by 34289 votes in the 2023 polls.

Shettar had resigned as MLA and from the primary membership of the party in April this year, after he claimed he felt ‘humiliated’ as BJP, sidelined him to give preference to younger candidates in the upcoming state assembly elections.

Reacting to his allegation, Karnataka’s chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, had said that BJP offered Shettar a number of options, including a bigger post inside the organisation, governorship, or party ticket to a relative; however, Shettar rejected each one of them.

Migrant worker from Bihar beaten to death in Kerala’s Mallapuram on suspicion of theft; 8 arrested

On Sunday, May 14, Kerala police arrested eight people in connection with the lynching of a migrant worker in Kizhissery. The deceased victim has been identified as Rajesh Manjhi, a 36-year-old native of the east Champaran district of Bihar. The migrant worker was lynched by a mob on Saturday over the allegations of theft.

Reportedly, the matter pertains to the Kondutty Police Station precinct in Mallapuram. The accused persons captured Manjhi from a house along the Kizhissery-Thavanur road on Saturday at around 1:00 am. The police learned about the incident at 3:25 am.

When the police arrived at the crime spot they found the victim lying on the wayside in a severely injured state. Police took Manjhi to a local hospital early in the morning. However, he was declared dead and his body was later transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. The post-mortem examination revealed multiple wounds on the body of the deceased, exposing the mob attack.

Providing details of the mob attack on Rajesh Manjhi, Mallapuram District Police Chief Sujit Das stated that the victim’s hands were tied and he was brutally assaulted with sticks and plastic pipes.

“The accused bound and assaulted the victim with sticks and plastic pipes.” We have gathered evidence, including pictures, from the accused’s phones. “They attempted to destroy evidence, including CCTV footage,” Malappuram district police chief Sujit Das said.

Manjhi had only recently arrived in Kondotty, according to Kondotty ASP B V Vijaya Bharath Reddy. “The people detained claim that the migrant worker fell from the house’s first floor after a failed theft attempt.” They apprehended and attacked the boy for over an hour after he fell from the building (home).

According to ASP Reddy, the police verified the house owner’s claim that the migrant worker fell from the building during a break-in attempt. ASP Reddy added that the family of the deceased migrant worker has been informed about his death.

The victim, identified as Rajesh Manji, worked at a chicken farm in Kizhissery, Kerala. Later, the police arrested 9 men in connection with his murder. The individuals apprehended consisted of three siblings: Mohammed Afsal, Fasil, and Sharafuddin. Additionally, those taken into custody were Mehaboob, Abdussamad, Nasar, Habeeb, Ayoob, and Zainul Abid. It is noteworthy that all of them hailed from Kizhissery.

In 2018, Ubaid took a selfie before the Kerala lynching: Details of the horrific case

It is pertinent to recall that in February 2018, a similar incident was reported wherein a poor tribal youth named Madhu was brutally lynched by a mob in Kerala’s Attapady over the suspicion of theft of food items.

What was perhaps most distressing was pictures that emerged later showing a man brazenly taking a selfie right before lynching Madhu to death. As demands for his arrest grew louder, netizens found a Facebook profile of a man named Ubaid whose page was filled with people condemning him for the act.

The police then arrested the selfie man, Mukkali Thodiyil Ubaid Ummar (25) and named him the fifth accused in the case.

Ubaid was booked under various sections of the IPC including Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Tribes and IT acts for circulating pictures and videos of the lynching.

At that time, allegations had also emerged that Ubaid was the personal staff member of the Muslim League politician and member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, N. Samsudheen. The MLA, however, had distanced himself from Ubaid and asserted that Ubaid only ‘participated in the election campaign’.

Elon Musk quotes OpIndia tweet on how CNBC was conned by fake Twitter employees, causes heartburn to left-liberals

On May 14, Twitter owner and billionaire Elon Musk quoted OpIndia’s tweet from December 2022, which was part of a thread on how media was duped by fake Twitter employees. A man who identified as Daniel Johnson talked to the media on the day Musk fired many Twitter teams. Johnson posed as a Twitter employee along with another person who was identified on camera as Rahul Ligma. Quoting OpIndia’s tweet, Musk wrote, “Feel so long ago.”

While the well-wishers were pleased to see OpIndia getting recognition, many attacked Musk accusing OpIndia of publishing fake news because its reportage doesn’t jibe with the liberal propaganda.

Interestingly, some of them added screenshots of Wikipedia, an open-source encyclopedia, as a source of the claim. Wikipedia itself says it is not a reliable source and should not be considered an authentic source of information.

Furthermore, Wikipedia’s co-founder Larry Sanger once said during an interview with OpIndia to never trust the open-source encyclopedia as it is heavily infiltrated by specific ideologies. OpIndia has covered extensively how Wikipedia not only publishes false information but also removes content that does not suit the ideology of the editors of the portal.

Netizens target Elon Musk for quoting OpIndia

Md Asif Khan, who is famous for publishing fake news, said, “Hello @elonmusk, why are you sharing a video of this propaganda machinery which has a track record of sharing fake news and spreading communal hatred in India?”

Anti-Hindu and propaganda Twitter handle HindutvaWatchIn wrote, “Twitter’s executive chairman. Elon Musk shares video of a supremacist propaganda website that is at the center of running an elaborate operation to spread anti-Muslim and anti-Christian hate in India.”

Twitter user imChokli said, “Musk quoting the biggest fake news factory of India just because they sucked up to him once.”

Another Twitter user Sanspareil questioned Musk why he was quoting OpIndia and whined that it is a fake news portal.

Twitter user Sachi Mohanty tried to connect to Elon Musk on a bhai-behen level and said, “Elon bhai, OpIndia is so trash that it’s banned on Wikipedia. Now, don’t try to buy Wikipedia as well to unblock OpIndia there.”

Twitter user Basheed claimed OpIndia is a propaganda machine.

Twitter user Ankit Shukla said, “The guy intending to run the “one source of truth on the internet” cannot be bothered to check before sharing an openly evil platform (aka PoopIndia) that LITERALLY copies Goebbels in demonising a community in the world’s largest democracy.” PoopIndia is a derogatory term left-liberal use for OpIndia whenever we debunk their false claims, expose their anti-national activities or publish reports that go against their ideology, which is, well, always!

Twitter user Faizul Hasan claimed Indian courts had labelled OpIndia as a “spreader of false information”. No court has ever labelled OpIndia as a “spreader of false information” in any judgment. Hasan’s claims are false.

Twitter user Kuch_mat_karo claimed the tweet by Musk by intentional as the same video was available on many sources.

Twitter user Senthil Venkatrajan called OpIndia a “rightwing propaganda” internet media.

Twitter user mutta_pupsu expressed her anger while replying to a Twitter user Jacob who said Musk shared a video about Tesla (It was about Twitter) and he might not be aware of the organisation. Reply to it, Mutta said, “Stil doesn’t excuse him! With him openly supporting the right, I don’t think he would flinch even if he knows Opindia is a fasc*st organisation.” Jacob was replying to HindutvaWatchIn twitter handle.

Divyanshu Jha urged Musk to ban OpIndia as the news portal is “working for the BJP”. He also urged him to tag OpIndia as “Government funded”.

CNBC falls for a prank by random strangers posing as Twitter employees

On Friday (October 28), American business news channel, CNBC, fell for a prank by random strangers, who posed as Twitter employees and claimed that they were fired by the company’s new owner Elon Musk.

CNBC mistook two strangers for ex-Twitter employees after they were spotted with boxes near the entrance of the company’s headquarters in San Francisco. When quizzed about their ouster, the duo decided to play along.

One of the pranksters identified himself as ‘Rahul Ligma’. “It makes me worry about the future of our democracy… the future of celebrity conservatorship. I mean, when Britney [Spears] happened…” he was heard as saying.

The Kerala Story crosses the Rs 100 crore mark as the film continues its dream run at the box-office

Sudipto Sen’s film The Kerala Story continues its dream run at the box office as the movie entered the Rs 100 crore club on Day 9 of its theatrical release on May 5. The Adah Sharma starrer earned Rs 12.35 crore on Friday (May 12), and Rs 19.50 crore on Saturday (May 13) taking its total to an impressive Rs 112.99 crore.

Noted film critic Taran Adarsh shared an update regarding the box office collection of The Kerala Story as he stated that the film has become the fourth Hindi film this year to cross the Rs 100 crore mark.

“#TheKeralaStory is a ONE-HORSE RACE… Has a SUPER-SOLID [second] Sat, cruises past ₹ 100 cr in style… The BIG JUMP was on the cards, given the trends… Biz on [second] Sun should be HUGE again… [Week 2] Fri 12.35 cr, Sat 19.50 cr. It is pertinent to note that the film The Kerala Story received strong objections from Muslims, liberals, and the opposition parties. It also faced multiple threats and bans in states including Tamil Nadu and West Bengal where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered to stop its screening to ‘maintain law and order in the state.’ However, the makers of the movie have approached the Supreme Court against this decision. Despite the stiff resistance, the film managed to get good word of mouth and box-office collections. On May 12, the film was released in USA, Canada, and France.

Although The Kerala Story was scheduled for a theatrical release in the United Kingdom as well the screening of the film was deferred as the British Board of Film Certification (BBFC) caused a delay in giving age rating and classification to the film prior to its scheduled release.

The plot of the film The Kerala Story revolves around a Hindu girl, Shalini Unnikrishnan from Kerala who is brainwashed to accept Islam by her Muslim friend, gets married to a Muslim man, and goes to Syria along with her spouse where she is sent to ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and tortured there.

Jharkhand: Govt school girls fall ill after warden Elizabeth Toppo punishes them with 200 sit-ups for missing PT class

In an unsettling incident at a government girls’ residential school in Latehar, Jharkhand, the warden named Elizabeth Kumud Toppo ordered the girls to perform 200 sit-ups as punishment for skipping physical training (PT) also known as games class on Thursday, and as a result, up to 170 of them became sick.

After completing the rigorous exercise, many of the girls passed out, and the majority of them complained of severe leg discomfort. The school personnel administered first assistance to them in the dormitory. Afterwards, at least 10 of them were transported to the neighbourhood health and wellness centre for treatment the next day on Friday as their conditions worsened.

“Since we did not attend the games class on Thursday, we were asked to do 200 sit-ups by the warden Elizabeth Kumud Toppo,” reported a class VII student, Sabita Kumari.

Block Development Officer (BDO) Pradeep Kumar Das visited the students on Friday and assessed the situation after learning about the occurrence. He stated, “I was told by the girls that after the games period, they were punished by the warden to do 200 sit-ups for not attending the class following which they complained of intensive pain in their legs and many of them got uncurious.”

“We will soon prepare a report and hand it over to the district headquarters,” he added. When contacted, the warden responded that she no longer wanted to work there and wanted to be transferred because of the stress caused by the burden of all the students.

She also professed that she had indeed given them punishment for skipping the games period. “Out of the total of 176 students, only six girls attended the games class, due to which, they were punished to do the sit-ups,” she accepted.

Local public leaders have requested that the warden be subjected to stern punishment for such insensitive action. Furthermore, complaints were filed about the warden earlier, but they claimed that nothing was done to address them.

Cyclone Mocha: Bangladesh’s St Martin’s Island may temporarily submerge in water

0

As Cyclone Mocha intensifies and winds are getting stronger, Saint Martin’s, the one and only coral island of Bangladesh, may go temporarily underwater, according to the head of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), reported Dhaka Tribune.

“Since there is no major infrastructure on the island, the storm will not get obstructed anywhere and hit the island directly. As the centre of the storm passes over St Martin’s, water will move from one side of the island to the other, and due to the intensity of the storm, the island may be underwater for some time,” BMD Director Md Azizur Rahman said on Sunday.

He added, “But the water will not stay still; it may also move away. The situation depends entirely on the speed of the storm.”

Meteorologist Shahinul Islam stated the bulk and centre of the storm would pass over Myanmar and the rest would lash Cox’s Bazar coast, as per Dhaka Tribune.

Islam also said that rainfall had already started across the coast of Bangladesh and most parts of the country might experience wet weather throughout the day.

In its morning bulletin, the BMS said that very severe cyclonic storm Mocha over east-central Bay and adjoining areas had moved north-northeastwards, intensified over northeast Bay and adjoining areas and was centred at 6 am about 385 km south-southwest of Chittagong port, 305 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 450km south of Mongla port and 370km south of Payra port.

The peripheral effect of Cyclone Mocha began on Sunday morning over the coastal areas of Chattorgram and Barishal divisions, according to the latest bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka Tribune reported.

According to BMD, Cyclone Mocha is moving towards the coastal areas of Bangladesh and Myanmar with winds up to 210 km/h.

The very strong cyclonic storm, according to the advisory, was located at midnight about 490 kilometres south-southwest of Chattogram port, 410 kilometres south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 530 kilometres south of Mongla port, and 460 kilometres south of Payra port, according to Dhaka Tribune.

The Indian Meteorological Department on Sunday said that Cyclone Mocha will cross southeastern Bangladesh and north Myanmar today with a sustained wind speed of 180-190 km per hour gusting up to 210 km per hour.

The maritime port of Cox’s Bazar has been instructed to hoist the Great Danger Signal 10, it stated, as per Dhaka Tribune.

Additionally, it has been advised that the maritime ports of Chattogram and Payra hoist Great Danger Signal 8, while the maritime port of Mongla should hoist Local Warning Signal 4.

The bulletin states that Cox’s Bazar’s coastal district, as well as its surrounding islands and chars, will come under Great Danger Signal No. 10.

The coastal districts of Chattogram, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Barishal, Patuakhali, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, and Bhola as well as its outlying islands and will come under chars Great Danger Signal No. 8, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Amethi: Dalit minor girl gang-raped by Waris and one other, FIR registered

On Wednesday, May 10, a minor Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped in the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. Police have registered an FIR in the case on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s father. The accused has been identified as Waris, meanwhile, the identity of another accused has not been disclosed yet. Police are conducting searches to nab the accused persons.

Reportedly, the matter pertains to the Saimbasi village in the Mohanganj Police Station precinct. In his complaint, the victim’s father, a resident of the Saimbasi village claimed that two local youths contacted his home number on Wednesday night. Other members of the family were sleeping at the time. The victim picked up the phone and stepped out of the house when the bike-borne accused kidnapped her and took her outside the village, the complaint said.

The complaint further stated that after taking the victim outside the village, accused Waris and the other raped the Dalit girl and fled the scene leaving the victim there. Before escaping, the accused youths threatened to kill the victim if she dared to tell anyone about their horrific crime. The victim, however, upon reaching her home revealed her ordeal to her family members.

Thereafter, the police filed a case against Waris and another accused under IPC section 376 D (gang rape), POCSO, and the SC/ST Act, and initiated searches to apprehend the accused.

SHO Mohanganj Dhirendra Yadav told OpIndia that after registering an FIR police are looking for the absconding accused. He stated that the accused are truck drivers, that police teams are deployed to nab them, and that they will be arrested soon. When asked about accused about the name of the accused Waris’s father, Rajbahadur, the station in charge said that many Muslims with such names reside in this area.
