Rajasthan: Mali, Saini, Kushwaha, and Maurya communities block highway demanding 12% reservation, police use tear gas after stone-pelting

On Friday, 21st April 2023, people of the Mali, Saini, Kushwaha, and Maurya communities in Rajasthan blocked the important Jaipur-Agra National Highway in Bharatpur. Demanding 12% special reservation in government employment and educational institutions, these people protested and blocked the roads.

The protesters also threw stones at the police, who responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowd. The communities, which fall under OBC, are now asking for a separate 12% reservation. They had already made it known that on Friday they will hinder the motorway. It is notable that chief minister Ashok Gehlot also belongs to the Mali community.

To prevent the agitators from reaching the main road, the police installed roadblocks on the highway near the villages of Ballabhgarh, Halaina, Vair, Aronda, and Ramaspur. However, some protesters made a ruckus and threw rocks at the police, who then used tear gas to subdue the crowd.

Superintendent of Police Shyam Singh said, “The agitators pelted stones at police following which mild force was used to disperse them. Tear gas was also used.”

In order to stop rumours from propagating, the Bharatpur district administration has shut down internet access for 24 hours in three tehsils. Bharatpur Divisional Commissioner Sanwarmal Verma said, “The protest is continuing. We have suspended internet services in Vair, Nadbai and Bhusavar tehsils for 24 hours.”

Members of the Saini community held a meeting with social justice department officials in Jaipur on Friday. A distinct Luv Kush Welfare Board, a hostel facility for the community’s youngsters, a reserve of 12%, and other demands were made during the meeting, according to an official statement from the Saini community leaders.

The state government has established the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Welfare Board, and April 19 has been designated as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Day, a public holiday, they said. Similar protests were organised by the community in June 2022, but they were put down after certain promises.

Ahmedabad: Stray dogs snatch infant from the cradle and maul her

0

In alarming news from Ahmedabad, a seven-month-old baby, Pooja, a child of construction workers was carried for roughly 30 metres by four stray dogs. Bystanders noticed the terrifying situation and intervened to save the infant. The incident happened on Thursday, April 20.

The child was put in a makeshift cradle near Sonal Cinema Road in Sarkhej, Juhapura, where her parents were working when the stray dogs suddenly attacked her. The entire instance that took place at Bagh-e-Nishat Society in Juhapura was captured on CCTV. The footage (video discretion advised) was also posted on social media.

The child was severely bitten and scratched, resulting in significant injuries, and was transferred to Civil Hospital. She was discharged following the treatment.

“It is a horrifying incident. The baby girl, Puja, after the severe attack was rushed by her parents to the Sarkhej Arogya Center, later to VS Hospital, and then to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital where she was treated. She was given an injection, however, there is concern over the infection since she has injuries all over,” Haji Mirza, Congress Councillor from Maktampura stated.

“The parents were working at a construction site near Sonal Cinema Road and had put the infant in a cradle. Suddenly stray dogs attacked the child. The 7-month-old girl would have died had residents not chased away the dogs in time,” he continued.

“The attack by dogs is a huge concern in this area. Earlier, a similar incident occurred in Fatehwadi about four months ago. There are crores of rupees spent in the department without fruitful results. Children are scared of dogs and a child has recently been bitten by a dog thrice in Nasheman society. It is unfortunate that dogs are not caught by the teams,” the leader added.

In Ahmedabad city, 58,668 dog bite incidences were reported in 2022, 7,457 more than in 2021. The month of December 2022 saw the highest number of dog bite reports, with 5,880 incidents being recorded in hospitals and urban health centres, according to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) data.

As per AMC, dog bite cases decreased during the lockdowns in 2020–2021. 65,881 dog bite cases were reported to hospitals and UHCs in the city in 2019, 51,244 in 2020, and 50,668 in 2021.

“However, as 2022 saw activities resume, cases of dog bites increased,” an AMC official informed. The 2022 number, he specified, is still less than that of 2019.

Gaddar party… BJP agent: Mamata Banerjee attacks BJP and AIMIM while addressing crowd on Eid in Kolkata

While addressing a gathering for Eid-ul-Fitr namaz in Kolkata’s Red Road on Saturday, April 22, West Bengal CM and TMC supremo launched a veiled attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Without taking names, Mamata Banerjee went on to call BJP a ‘Gaddar Party’ (traitors) while accusing AIMIM of being a BJP stooge.

“All I would like to tell you is stay peaceful, don’t listen to anyone. A ‘gaddar party’ with whom I have to fight… I have to fight agencies too – I fight them because I have the courage to do so. I am not ready to bow down,” she said, without naming any party.

In an obvious reference to the All India Majilis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the TMC supremo further claimed that some political parties were trying to divide Muslim votes to help the BJP. She assured the gathering that she would not let it happen.

“Someone takes money from BJP and says that they will divide Muslim votes. I tell them that they don’t have the courage to divide Muslim votes for BJP,” she snarled, attempting to instigate the Muslim crowd assembled for Eid-ul-Fitr namaz on Kolkata’s Red Road.

It is pertinent to note here that Mamata Banerjee’s allegations of Owaisi being hand-in gloves with the BJP are not new. In 2021, she made similar inference while addressing a crowd in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar. “A person came to Bengal from Hyderabad, he took money from BJP. Don’t allow him here”, she said. Basically, Mamata Banerjee had insinuated that Asaduddin Owaisi, who is predominantly from Hyderabad, is on the payrolls of BJP and is trying to make inroads in Bengal to divide the Muslim vote on BJP’s command.

Mamata Banerjee vows to maintain peace and unity in West Bengal

Ironically, Mamata Banerjee further emphasised her commitment to maintaining ‘peace’ and ‘unity’ in the state. The West Bengal chief minister asserted she did not want riots or divisions in the country and promised to do everything in her power to prevent such occurrences.

Here it becomes imperative to recall, how only last month several incidents of violence were reported from many places in the state during Ram Navami celebrations. Recently, Mamata Banerjee had also downplayed the post-poll violence in her state, which claimed the lives of more than a dozen BJP workers, by calling it ‘small-time incidents.’

Clearly disregarding all her past apathetic remarks and attitude towards the several violent incidents that have rocked the state under her regime, the West Bengal CM said, “We want peace in Bengal. We don’t want riots. We want peace. We don’t want divisions in the country. Those who want to create divides in the country — I promise today on Eid, I am ready to give my life but I will not let the country divide.”

Mamata Banerjee further attacked the central government by evoking democracy. She said, “If democracy will go away, everything will go away. Today Constitution is being changed, history is being changed. They brought NRC. I told them that I will not let them do that.”

“In one year’s time, elections will be held to decide who will come to power in our country. Let us promise that we will unite and fight against divisive forces. We must ensure that all of us together vote them out in the next polls. If we fail to protect democracy, then everything will be finished,” she added.

Karnataka: DK Shivkumar accused of taking bribes from Congress candidates, Minister Shobha Karandlaje files complaint with EC

Union minister Shobha Karandlaje has filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar for allegedly taking bribes from Congress candidates. She alleged that bribes were demanded from party candidates while issuing B-forms for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly polls.

The last date for filing nominations was April 20 and the papers were scrutinised by the EC authorities on Friday. The polling for the Karnataka assembly is scheduled to take place on May 10. The results will be declared on May 13.

Shobha Karandlaje is the convenor of the state election management committee. The Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare alleged that Shivakumar himself had admitted that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee had taken money from ticket aspirants in violation of the election code of conduct. In a complaint lodged with state Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena, Karandlaje sought appropriate action against Shivakumar as well as all Congress candidates.

Shobha Karandlaje said in his complaint to Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena, “DK Shivakumar, who is also the authorised person to issue B-forms to contest elections, has openly stated that the KPCC (Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee) has taken money from Congress party candidate aspiring for a ticket.” She also demanded appropriate action against the Congress leader as well as all party candidates. “This is nothing but bribery under the Indian Penal Code and also a serious violation of election laws and the model code of conduct,” Shobha Karandlaje said.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar is facing controversies over alleged money laundering and tax evasion. Several investigations have also been carried out by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax (IT) department. However, he dismissed all the allegations against him and accused the BJP government of political vendetta.

Watch: JDU leader Neeraj Kumar recites Quran on the occasion of Eid at an event in Bihar

0

On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr on Saturday, April 22, Neeraj Kumar, the leader of Nitish Kumar’s JDU recited verses of the Quran during an event, the video of which was shared by the news agency ANI.

Earlier, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar also marked his presence in an Eid al-Fitr celebration and witnessed people offering Namaz. The CM visited Patna’s iconic Gandhi Maidan to attend prayers on the occasion of Eid.

Interacting with media persons after the prayer, Kumar said, “Everyone should respect each other’s faith. This festival symbolises feelings of peace, brotherhood and harmony. I extend my hearty greetings and best wishes to all the people of the state. People must maintain mutual harmony on this auspicious occasion”.

“I have been visiting Gandhi Maidan on the occasion of Eid since 2006…We respect all religions and faiths… we have been working for the upliftment of every section of society”, Bihar CM and JDU chief said.

In February this year, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said that those who want to make India a Hindu nation want to destroy the country. His statement has come two days after Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that India was, is, and will be a Hindu nation.

The Janata Dal (United) leader said, “People of every religion and sect live here. If one wants to do this (make India ‘Hindu-Rashtra’) then one wants to destroy the country. We should only adhere to what the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi said. He was killed eventually. We are following the path of Gandhiji.”

Kerala: High alert after state BJP office receives threat letter ahead of PM Modi’s visit

0

The Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has received a letter claiming a life threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his scheduled two-day visit to the state. Henceforth, the state has been placed on high alert in preparation for his impending visit. The letter, which included the sender’s identity and other information, threatened a suicide attack on the PM during his visit to Kochi scheduled for April 24.

The letter, which was received at the Kerala office of the BJP on April 17, has been handed over to the Kerala Police by state party president K. Surendran.

“We handed over the threat letter to the police. It’s also baffling to note that an intelligence report of the Kerala Police mentions the strong presence of terrorist and anti-national forces in the state and it’s baffling as one doesn’t know if the timing of the report comes at a time when the PM is visiting or is it something else,” he proclaimed.

Joseph Johnny, a resident of Ernakulam, is listed as the sender on it. Police were able to locate him, although, he refuted any wrongdoing. He claimed that his opponents had used his name to frame him.

Security measures have been reinforced and further information is being sought by central investigation authorities.

A 49-page letter from the Additional Director General of Police detailing security drills was leaked to the media in the meantime. One such perceived major threat, from the outlawed Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI), was also mentioned in the ADGP’s report. M. Muraleedharan, minister of state for external affairs, who is from Kerala, expressed concern over the leak and called it a serious lapse on the part of the Kerala police.

K. Surendran also slammed the police, asserting that the leak of security measures to be implemented by top Kerala Police Intelligence officials constituted a serious security violation. He, however, has maintained that all scheduled functions will take place.

“Prime Minister’s visit to Kerala will give impetus to the state’s development. There is a great expectation among the people of Kerala for this visit. PM Modi will hold a road show. People will come voluntarily to receive him. ‘Yuvam’ will be the conference that would mark the beginning of Kerala’s political change. The youth who want the development of Kerala beyond party politics will participate in this,” he remarked.

The letter outlined every action to be taken as well as the duties of senior police officers during the BJP’s stalwart visit, and now that it has been leaked, a new plan is being developed.

On April 24, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Kochi and participate in a road show. He will meet with the top leaders of nine different Churches after addressing a youth gathering.

He will spend the night in Kochi and leave for the state capital Thiruvananthapuram the following morning to kick off the inaugural Vande Bharat Express. From there, he would head to the Central Stadium to inaugurate a few projects and deliver a speech to the public at around midday. He will then leave for Gujarat.

Poonch Terror Attack: Drones, sniffer dogs, and a chopper used in the manhunt; 12 detained

0

While a MI helicopter, drones, and sniffer dogs were used in a massive manhunt for the perpetrators of the attack on security personnel, at least 12 people were detained on Friday for questioning in relation to the deadly ambush of five army soldiers in the dense forest area of Bata Doriya, in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir.

According to officials, the security forces are questioning those who have been apprehended at multiple levels to determine the identity of the terror organisation, which is reported to have been active in the area for more than a year and likely includes a sniper as well.

A day after the assault, Dilbag Singh, the director general of the Jammu and Kashmir police, and Mukesh Singh, the additional director general of police, were camped in the nearby Rajouri district to supervise the inquiry. The two officers went to the location of the incident as well.

As the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to take over the case, a team led by an officer with the rank of Deputy Inspector General was also present.

Although neither the Army nor the J&K Police has released an official statement, reports remarked that the inquiry has so far pointed to the involvement of three to four unidentified terrorists who are believed to have utilised 7.62 mm steel core bullets made in China.

The forensic science laboratory and bomb disposal teams examined the scene on Friday morning and collected armour-piercing bullets with marks that read ’71,’ which are believed to have been manufactured at a Chinese facility, per sources.

The assailants may have been concealed on both sides of the road (in a heavily forested area on one side and a gorge on the other) based on the trajectory of the gunfire and the angles at which the Army vehicle was hit from all sides.

The national highway between Bhimber Gali and Jarran Wali Gali was closed to vehicular traffic for the second day in a row.

The perpetrators of the attack, according to the officials, are thought to have lived in Rajouri and Poonch for more than a year and had sufficient knowledge of the difficult terrain. They confirmed that the region is a hotspot for the Jammu and Kashmir Gaznavi Force (JKGF), whose commander is Rafiq Ahmed, also known as Rafiq Nayi, a local.

Three to four terrorist organisations are presently operating in the Rajouri and Poonch regions, as per the sources. The attack has been attributed to the banned terror organisation People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), a front for the Pakistani terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed. In accordance with some accounts, it could also have been the work of another Pakistani terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Recent intelligence inputs implied that LeT operatives planned to infiltrate the Krishna Ghati and Bhimber Gali districts. Infiltrators in the Balakote sector have in the past used the path through the Bhata Durian forests before finally entering the Kashmir Valley, explained a senior police official who has served in the area.

The heavily forested area of Tota-Gali-Bata Doriya has been completely sealed off. According to authorities, the army conducted a reconnaissance flight over the area using an MI chopper while deploying drones and sniffer dogs to track down the terrorists. A high alert has been sounded in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch amid heightened vigil along the Line of Control.

Five Army servicemen were killed and another suffered serious injuries on Thursday after the attack when their vehicle caught fire. The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Top military and law enforcement officers laid wreaths and paid tribute to the slain soldiers, Havildar Mandeep Singh of the Chankoian village in Ludhiana, Lance Naik Kulwant Singh of the Charik village in Moga, Sepoy Harkrishan Singh of the village Talwandi in Gurdaspur and Sepoy Sewak Singh of the Bagha village in Bathinda, on Friday. The dead bodies were sent to their native places.

Around 3 pm on Thursday, the Army vehicle came under fire while travelling between Bhimber Gali and Poonch in the Rajouri sector. The Northern Command, based in Udhampur, had suggested that the use of grenades was likely what caused the vehicle to catch fire. Military sources informed that the truck was part of a sparse convoy of two to three vehicles that had little security.

On one side of the area, the Mughal Road’s Dehra Ki Gali, and on the other, Surankote, which is adjacent to the Poonch tehsil, are both bordered by thick trees. Based on aerial measurements, the LoC in the Balakote sector is only around 3–4 km distant, making it an attractive path for infiltrators who travel directly through nullahs and woodlands to reach their destination.

Given the significant Army presence in the surrounding areas, sources revealed that those who take this route do not linger in the Bhata Durian area for very long. They only stay for a day or two at most before going on to the village of Behramgala on the Mughal Road and then entering Shopian in the Kashmir Valley.

Notably, a motorist reported two suspicious-looking armed men had boarded his car in Rajouri and exited in the Bhata Durian area of Poonch district to Surankote police station in February of this year. His report prompted the Army troops and Jammu & Kashmir Police to conduct a search operation in the area. However, the searches yielded no results, and the police alleged that the man was lying.

No Eid celebrations in Sangiote

Sangiote hamlet residents in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district will not observe Eid on Saturday because the ill-fated Army truck was headed for the village. The vehicle was transporting fruits and other supplies for an iftar gathering that was scheduled to take place in Sagiote later that day.

The Rashtriya Rifles unit was in charge of making preparations for the 7 pm ceremony, according to the village’s 4,000 residents, to whom invitations had been sent.

The truck was transporting provisions from the RR’s Basooni headquarters in Balakote, and it also picked up additional commodities en route from the Bhimber Gali area, where the RR is heavily present due to the movement of Army convoys between Poonch and Rajouri.

The Sarpanch of the Sangiote panchayat, Mukhtiaz Khan, said he was among those invited for the Iftar. “Kya iftar jab hamare paanch jawan uss unfortunate haadse mein shaheed ho gaye (what iftar fast when five of our soldiers were martyred in that unfortunate incident),” he bemoaned.

“As soon as we got information about the terror attack from social media groups, a pall of gloom descended on the village. We too wanted to go there,” (but the police and Army had cordoned off the area by then) he bewailed.

He added, “The villagers will not celebrate Eid on Saturday. We will only offer namaz. The deceased were part of the RR unit deployed in our village and our thoughts are with their families.”

In Jammu, various groups, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Rashtriya Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena, Dogra Front, and Jammu Statehood organisation, demonstrated against the dreadful attack.

Caught on camera: 9-year-old boy attacked by stray dogs while going to mosque in Karnataka’s Kolar, rescued by a cop and hospitalised

At Rahmatnagar in Kolar town in Karnataka in the early hours of Friday, a nine-year-old kid was bitten by roughly 20 stray dogs as he made his way to a mosque for prayers. A local police constable was successful in rescuing the little boy.

The victim Jaffer, who is a class 3 student and the son of tea store owner Babu, was taken to Kolar’s SNP Hospital immediately and is now recovering there. The boy, according to his father Babu, left the house to visit the adjacent mosque for Ramzan prayers early in the morning.

The incident was caught on a security camera, which shows that a pack of 15-20 dogs attacked and mauled the kid on the road. While the boy was being attacked by the dogs on the main road, someone on a two-wheeler can be seen passing the area, without paying attention to what was going on. Moments later, the police vehicle arrives at the spot and a cop chases away the stray dogs.

Jaffer was going towards Moorandahalli at approximately 3.20 am when, according to police constable Rajanna, who is attached to a police emergency response support system truck, he heard faint noises from among a group of barking dogs. Rajanna urged his driver-colleague Manjunath Shetty to slow down the car because he thought the dogs were attacking an animal. When Rajanna got off of it, he was terrified to find that the dogs were attacking a boy.

The police constable then chased the dogs away by hurling stones at them and recovered the boy who was severely bleeding. The boy was then immediately taken to the hospital.

A similar incident was reported from the Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A eight-year-old boy identified as Harris Khursheed Mir was attacked by a pack of 20 dogs on April 20 near his home. The boy has sustained major injuries on his entire body.

NIA to probe Kerala train terror attack, DGP orders to provide full details of the case to probe agency

The Kerala Police chief has directed the state crime branch to hand over the complete details of the investigation into the recent train arson incident to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as the NIA is probing the matter. The Director General of Police asked the Crime Branch to hand over all the details to the investigating agency.

In an order issued on Thursday, 20th April 2023, DGP Anil Kant said that the case registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Railways Act and Explosive Substances Act had been transferred from the state crime branch to the Kochi unit of the NIA. The order issued by the DGP said that the Superintendent of Malappuram Crime Branch, the investigating officer is directed to hand over CD files, connected records and case assets to the central agency ahead of time.

Kerala train terror attack

The terror attack took place on an express train in Kozhikode, Kerala on April 2. The accused Shahrukh Saifi set a passenger on fire. Nine people were burnt in this incident, while three people, including a child, were found dead on the tracks. Police suspect that they may have fallen while trying to escape the fire. A railway official said that passengers of the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express pulled the emergency chain due to the fire.

Shahrukh, a YouTuber, and carpenter by profession is believed to have landed in Shornur town in Kerala from Delhi on April 2 and spent the entire day there before boarding the train. Investigators claimed that he filled a couple of bottles with petrol from a Shornur outlet during this time. On Tuesday, April 5, a special investigation team from Kerala nabbed the accused around 3 am from a train at Ratnagiri.

Shahrukh claimed to have carried out the attack near Elathur by himself, however, police suspect there may have been other people involved in the attack. Shahrukh also had a list of railway stations in the state that he wanted to target.

Shahrukh Saifi, a YouTuber by profession changed his lifestyle in June last year as he quit smoking and started to spend more time in Namaz. The police suspect that despite having a very small number of subscribers on his YouTube channel, Saifi is thought to have been approached by radicals because of his social media activity.

While Shahrukh reportedly told the cops about his changed lifestyle before carrying out the train fire attack, his family in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh claimed that he never showed any explicit religious behaviour. The Kerala Police team visited the accused Shahrukh’s residence in Shaheen Bagh and questioned his parents. He went missing from his residence on March 30, following which his parents lodged a missing person complaint.

According to Additional Director General of Police M R Ajith Kumar, who also serves as the head of the special investigative team in Kozhikode, “Saifi has been constantly watching Naik’s videos. He is an extremely radicalised man who arrived in Kerala with the intent to do a crime. All of the evidence linking him to the crime has been acquired.”

On this day in 1998: When Sachin Tendulkar conjured up the iconic ‘Desert Storm’ that stunned the Aussies and immortalised his legend

It was the sultry day of 22 April 1998 when the two international cricket teams, Australia and India, in the desert town of Sharjah, UAE, competed in a match that produced one of the most memorable innings by prolific Indian batsman Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

Such was the historic innings played by Master Blaster, as Sachin Tendulkar was fondly called, for his ability to take the attack on the opposition, that even after 25 years since his iconic performance, it continues to enchant and bewitch cricket fans and admirers around the world and particularly in India.

The odds were stacked against India even before the start of the match. It had found itself in an unenviable position—to beat Australia or finish with a better net run rate than New Zealand—the third team in the Coco Cola tri-series, to qualify for the final.

The Australian team at that time was a formidable side, with the likes of Shane Warne, Steve Waugh, Micheal Bevan, and a host of other phenoms who went on to win their country three world cups in a row.

Batting first, Australia posed an imposing total of 284 on the board. India had to score a minimum of 254 to qualify for the final—a total considered daunting during those times—when teams lacked self-belief in surpassing daunting scores and when T20 cricket was not even conceived.

During the match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, a sandstorm hit and play was suspended for around 25 minutes. This not only made the target more challenging for India but also added to the drama of one of the most memorable innings in ODI cricket history.

With the Duckworth Lewis method mandating India to need 276 runs for victory and 237 to qualify, Sachin Tendulkar entered the ground, focused and disciplined, and began his counter-attack, chipping away at the might of the Australian bowling attack, blow after blow.

Tendulkar went past his century in a jiffy and played with an almost supernatural intensity, smashing bowlers to corners of the ground.

India breached the 237 mark, ensuring their place in the final, which was to be played two days later. Tendulkar bettered his previous best of 137 in ODIs with a magnificent stroke, adorning his masterclass innings in an already eventful match.

Even though India had secured a berth in the finals, the job was far from over for Tendulkar, who appeared like a man possessed, engrossed in the task of taking his team over the victory line. Despite the challenging scoring rate, with India needing 38 runs off just 20 balls, brimming with self-confidence and appearing determined, Tendulkar believed that the Australian total can be surpassed.

However, in his bid to score fast, Tendulkar was caught behind on the last ball of the 43rd over, bringing an end to an otherwordly display of batting prowess, one that would seal his legend in the annals of cricketing history.

Tony Grieg’s commentary added an extra spark to Tendulkar’s stupendous innings. Grieg’s famous lines, “They are dancing in the aisles in Sharjah,” captured the electrifying atmosphere among the fans in the stadium. Grieg’s description of Tendulkar as a “whaddaplaya, what a wonderful playa!” memorialised the batsman’s incredible performance.

While VVS Laxman and Hrishikesh Kanitkar managed to score eight more runs in the next three overs after Tendulkar’s dismissal, India fell 25 runs from victory, demonstrating the grit and gumption of the Master Blaster in bringing India on the verge of a historic win and attested to his outstanding class that set him apart from other batsmen.

However, two days later, on his 25th birthday, Tendulkar scored yet another century, this time leading India to victory in Coca Cola Cup.

25 years after the iconic ‘Desert Storm’ innings, Sachin Tendulkar reminisced about the match and expressed his gratitude while interacting with his fans.

“I don’t think whatever I have been able to achieve would have been possible without your support, love & affection. That positive energy gave me the strength to go out and do what I did for India. The dream was to play for India, to lift that beautiful trophy – the birth of that dream took place in 1983. From there on till 2011, I only had one desire in life – to hold that beautiful trophy,” Tendulkar said.

Cricket had changed a lot since those days in 1998 when Tendulkar produced a magical inning that got baptised as ‘Desert Storm’, but it was, arguably, a primer to what was to come next, with Sachin Tendulkar, with his sheer talent and ability, ushering the game into its arguably the most popular format: T20 cricket.
