“Our sticks are not weak”: Maulana Tauqeer Raza, who had earlier warned Hindus that they won’t find a place to hide in India, issues another threat

Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, the founder of the Islamic party Ittehad-e-Millat, has courted controversy once again with his remarks. Commenting on the deaths of two cow smugglers in Bhiwani, Tauqeer Raza said that now either the country will run as per the law or by the stick, but our sticks are also not weak. Further, he also demanded a ban on Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.

Addressing a press conference in Bareilly, Tauqueer Raza said, “The incident took place in Bhiwani on 16 February 2023, but we were silent. Our children were falsely accused and murdered. When the accused are supported in meetings and mahapanchayat itself, we feel that these murders and mob lynchings have become normal.”

Further, the controversial Islamic cleric said, “The way the PFI was banned, VHP and Bajrang Dal should be declared as terror outfits and ban them.”

Invoking Mahabharata, Raza called PM Narendra Modi Dhritrashtra and said that the PM is not doing anything about the Duryodhanas and Dushasans in India. He also warned of another Mahabharata in present-day India.

The controversial history of Maulana Tauqeer Raza

This is not the first time that the cleric has courted controversy through his incendiary remarks. Last year, while addressing a crowd of 20 lakh Muslims in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, the radical Islamist brazenly threatened Hindus in India that the day Muslims’ rage flares, they would have nowhere to escape.

“I see the anger within my Muslim youths and I am afraid that the day this anger bursts out, the day I lose control over them… I want to warn my Hindu brothers that I’m scared that the day my Muslim youths are forced to take the law into their hands, you will not find a place to hide anywhere in India”, said the Islamic leader, while displaying his extreme hate for the Hindus.

Earlier, after the government passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the radical Islamist had brazenly urged for a bloodbath in the country if CAA is not repealed. “We are Allah wale, what we say it happens, there will be blood bath Inshallah”, the Islamic leader had said while admonishing PM Modi for bringing in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Liberal MP Han Dong part of Chinese foreign interference, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau persisted with him despite being warned: Report

0

On February, 24, Friday, Canadian investigative journalist Sam Cooper reported that ahead of the 2019 federal elections in Canada, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had informed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that his Don Valley North candidate Han Dong was involved in the Chinese foreign interference.

Citing sources aware of the investigation in the matter, the Global News journalist claimed that Han Dong is among the 11 “Toronto-area riding candidates” backed by Beijing in the 2019 federal elections.

Moreover, Cooper said that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service began investigating Han Dong in 2019, as Dong emerged as a political successor of the then Member of Parliament Geng Tan in a sudden and suspicious manner.

During the 2019 investigation, it was the ‘circumstances’ under which Han Dong replaced an incumbent Geng Tan attracted the focus of the intelligence officers. CSIS reportedly had received the intelligence input that Beijing was not pleased with Geng Tan’s performance and preferred Dong over Tan.

“The Consulate was not pleased with Geng Tan’s performance,” a national security official aware of the investigation told Global News.

The nomination process for the Liberal Party reportedly alarmed CSIS. Cooper cited sources to support his claims that, among other irregularities, Chinese international students with fake addresses were allegedly bused into the riding (constituency) and pressured to vote for Dong.

The service alleged that “Han Dong was a close associate of Michael Chan, who is a target of CSIS,” according to a source with knowledge of the brief.

Cooper claimed that the Canadian intelligence agency suspects that Michael Chan is a Chinese agent providing “secret political information to the Toronto Consulate.“

An official reportedly said that “CSIS was concerned that Han Dong was connected to People’s Republic of China foreign interference in Canada,”  “And that Han Dong also was a close contact with Michael Chan, who was a target of CSIS.” However, downplaying the alleged CSIS concerns about Dong, the Liberal Party of Canada allowed him to proceed in 2019, and he won the seat.

Refuting the allegations levelled against himself, Michael Chan who now is the Deputy Mayor of Markham, in a mailed response to Cooper wrote, “This sort of vague innuendo is impossible to respond to. To the extent you are suggesting I am not a true Canadian, you should be ashamed of yourself.”

Han Dong also denied the allegations of his alleged involvement with the foreign interference network, “As a Member of Parliament, safeguarding Canada’s democratic institutions is a fundamental part of my job, and I take all serious allegations of foreign interference very seriously. I am unaware of the claims provided to you by alleged sources, which contain seriously inaccurate information,” Dong said, in answer to Sam Cooper’s questions in this investigation.

CSIS on foreign interference in Canada

A report by the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology details the take of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) on the foreign interference network.

Foreign interference threatens Canadian sovereignty, national interests, and values, making it one of the most strategic dangers to the country’s security. Foreign interference operations employ a variety of strategies, such as sophisticated cyber tools, state-sponsored or foreign-influenced media, and human intelligence operations.

To further the goals of a foreign state, social media, online sources, and traditional media outlets can all be targeted. Foreign governments that seek to influence public opinion, and discussion, and covertly interfere with democratic participation may also target mainstream media outlets and local sources.

Elections are just one instance of the democratic institutions and processes that state actors might use against them. “C Canada is not immune to these threat activities.”

Some state actors, like the People’s Republic of China, engage in hostile operations that aim to undermine the public’s trust in Canada’s democratic institutions and manipulate and misuse the democratic system to serve their own national objectives.

According to CSIS, it is the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government that poses a threat and not the Chinese Canadians.

CSIS states that China is employing all aspects of state authority to carry out actions that pose a direct threat to our national security and sovereignty as part of a strategy to gain a geopolitical advantage on all fronts, including economic, technological, political, and military.

Chinese illegal police stations operating in foreign countries

the Investigative Journalism Reportika explained in a report published in September last year detailed that the Chinese government had previously opened numerous illegal police stations around the world, including in developed countries such as Canada and Ireland, raising concerns among human rights activists.

Several local media reports claimed that such informal police service stations affiliated with the Public Security Bureau (PSB) have been set up across Canada to vilify China’s adversaries.

According to local media reports, Fuzhou had set up informal police service stations across Canada that are affiliated with the Public Security Bureau (PSB). Three such police stations are located in Greater Toronto Area.

According to the National Post report published last year, Chinese police stations are operating in three locations across Canada as was told by Safeguard Defenders. A private residence in Markham, a convenience store in Scarborough, and the address of the Canada Toronto Fuqing Business Association. According to the Fuzhou police, 30 such stations have already been set up in 21 countries. According to multiple media reports, countries such as France, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom have such arrangements for Chinese police stations.

Apart from operating illegal police stations, China is also accused of deploying consulates and overseas courts in several countries in an attempt to crush dissent against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

‘Mafia ko mitti mei mila denge’: Yogi Adityanath says SP patronised criminals over killing of key witness in BSP MLA’s murder

The issue of the murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005, triggered a heated debate between BJP and SP in the Uttar Pradesh assembly after CM Yogi Adityanath said that SP was harbouring criminals and mafia in the state. Replying to the motion of thanks to the governor’s address in the assembly on Saturday morning, the CM said that decisive action would be taken against the criminals, saying ‘mafia ko mitti mei mila denge’.

Umesh Pal was shot dead in Prayagraj on Friday evening at his residence by unidentified attackers. One man shot Umesh Pal when he was getting out of his car, while others hurled crude bombs. Two of security guards deployed by the UP govt were also injured in the attack. Umesh Pal was taken to a hospital where he succumbed during the treatment. The condition of one of his bodyguards is critical.

Umesh Pal was a prime witness in the Raju Pal murder in 2005, who was shot dead in broad daylight in Prayagraj on January 25, months after winning the Allahabad (West) assembly seat in a by-election by defeating Khalid Azim, brother of former SP MP Atiq Ahmed, a mafia don turned politician. The by-election was held after sitting MLA Atiq Ahmed was elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections on a SP ticket.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf are the main accused in the case and are currently lodged in jail. The murder case is being probed by the CBI, and 10 persons have been named in the charge sheet filed in the case, including Atiq and Khalid.

As the key accused in the Raju Pal murder case are SP leaders, CM Yogi Adityanath accused the party of patronising criminals, evoking a strong reaction from Akhilesh Yadav in the house. Talking about the Umesh Pal murder, the CM asked, ‘these criminals and these mafias, after all, who harboured them? Is it not true that the mafia against whom the FIR was filed by the victim’s family was made MP by Samajwadi Party?’

‘You will harbour criminals, put garlands on them, and then you create a scene?’ the CM said to the SP MLAs who started to object to his comments. Akhilesh Yadav asked which criminal is member of which party, and alleged that Yogi Adityanath was not naming Bahujan Samaj Party because BJP has a friendship with BSP. To this, the CM replied by asking that is it not true that Atiq Ahmed, against whom the victim’s family filed the FIR, is not a criminal patronised by SP.

Saying that the UP govt will finish the mafia in the state, Yogi said, ‘I am saying in this house, we will reduce the mafia to the ground’. He said that SP has not learnt anything except patronising ciminals, and crime is filled in their blood. He gave details of how Atiq Ahmed became MLA and MP several times either with the support of SP or on SP tickets.

Akhilesh Yadav objected to comments by the CM, saying the CM can’t say ‘mafia ko mitti mei mila denge’. He said this is the wrong language, and only the law can take action against the mafia, not the government. The speaker countered him by saying that there is nothing wrong in promising against the mafia, but the SP chief didn’t relent, saying it is wrong to say ‘mafia ko mitti mei mila denge’.

Yogi Adityanath taunted SP further on this, pointing out how the party is opposing taking action against criminals. He said that yesterday’s incident in Prayagraj is tragic, and the culprits won’t be spared. He questioned why the leader of the opposition is so disturbed by the promise to crush the mafia in the state. He said that during the SP rule, the mafia was patronised by the ruling party, they used to feel proud in glorifying the mafia, and the government used to bow down to the professional mafia, and now his government is on a mission to finish the same professional mafia.

It is notable that Atiq Ahmed is a five-time MLA from Allahabad, he won as an independent in 1989, 1991 and 1993. He won the assembly seat from an SP ticket in 1996, and then won in 2002 from Apna Dal. In 2004, he won the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat from SP. He was expelled by SP in the year 2008, and he contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from Apna Dal, which is lost. He contested the polls from Prayagraj after he was arrested in the Raju Pal murder case. Atiq Ahmed contested the 2012 assembly polls from jail and lost to Raju Pal’s widow Puja Pal. Before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was again inducted into SP and contested the polls from Shrawasti seat, which he lost to BJP.

Apart from the Raju Pal murder case, Atiq Ahmed is also facing several other criminal cases including cases of assault, kidnapping, torture etc.

Goa: Locals gherao man who claimed Muslim residents support Pakistan cricket team in the viral video, ‘I love India’ he now claims

0

Days after a video of a middle-aged man in Goa claiming allegiance to Pakistan for being a Muslim went viral on social media, locals in Calangute town gheraoed and confronted the accused.

In a video shared by popular Twitter user Madhur Singh on Friday (February 24), the locals could be seen asking the man to hold his ears and apologise for his behaviour.

“I love India baba, I really love India,” he was heard saying with folded hands. The man was also seen reluctantly chanting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ with his co-religionists, wearing a skull cap.

In another video that has now come to light, some locals were seen questioning an elderly man and the onlookers about their ‘alleged support for ‘love’ for India’s arch-rival, Pakistan.

“If you like Pakistan, then, why are you still here? Go to Pakistan then,” said one local. Another local cautioned, “If I ever hear Pakistan Zindabad slogans here, then, I will personally escort everyone to the border. Your shop will be shut.”

“You guys come here and do this because we locals do not object,” another man was heard saying.

The Background of the Controversy

On February 22 morning, travel vlogger Davud Akhundzada took to Twitter to share a video of Goa residents supporting Pakistan during a cricket match against New Zealand.

The video, which went viral on social media, showed Davud interacting with a few men in Calangute Bazar in the North Goa district. The travel vlogger saw that the men were watching a cricket match between Pakistan and New Zealand.

“You are cheering for New Zealand?”, Davud inquired. A middle-aged man, sitting on a chair, promptly responded, “Pakistan.” On being asked about the specific reason for supporting India’s arch-rival, he emphasised, “This is Muslim area.”

Davud, who hails from Prague in the Czech Republic, was taken aback by the response. “Interesting that they are cheering for Pakistan in India in the bazaar in Goa against New Zealand,” he added.

The video was originally posted by Davud Akhundzada on his official Youtube channel on December 26, 2022. In the longer version of the video, the middle-aged man could be heard saying, “This is all Muslim area. All Pakistanis.”

“And you are sitting in the bar…Nice guys, enjoy,” the travel vlogger reminded him that alcohol is prohibited in Islam. In the caption of his video, Davud wrote, “This was very surprising for me to see. But it is the reality that I want to share the whole story with no edits.”

As per the match fixtures of the Pakistani cricket team, it is clear that the video was originally recorded on November 9 last year i.e. during the 1st semi-final match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Bihar: 3 persons, including 2 history sheeters, beaten by Diha villagers over suspicion of theft, Police recover bullets and a knife from their SUV

0

On Thursday, three persons identified as Mohammed Babar, 28, Ruknuddin Alam, 32, and Mohammad Sajid, 28 were beaten by the locals in Diha village of Gaya in Bihar. The locals said that the three persons had arrived in the village with weapons to execute thefts and were apprehended as they tried to run away.

According to the reports, the local villagers stated that around 6 people had arrived in the village on the night of February 22. The 6 people carried weapons as they intended to steal money and assets belonging to a few villagers. The suspected thieves were caught by the villagers who later began beating them up.

While three of them managed to escape, Mohammed Babar, Ruknuddin Alam, and Mohammad Sajid were caught by the villagers. The police, meanwhile, were informed. They took cognizance of the event and took the three individuals to Gaya’s Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College. The doctors at the hospital declared Mohammed Babar dead while the other two have been now transferred to PMCH in Patna.

The Police filed two different FIRs in the case and confirmed that there was no communal angle in the case. The police were informed by villagers that they stopped the group to ask about their identities and were then fired upon by them.

The officers, during the investigation, recovered a Scorpio car and three bullets, one knife, a bomb, and an iron rod from the SUV of the accused persons. The Police also said that Ruknuddin Alam and Mohammad Sajid, who are injured in the incident, already have several FIRs registered in their respective names.

However, the family members of the accused claim that the three were deliberately beaten and that this was an attempt of ‘targeted killing’. One of the family members of Sajid stated that the three were beaten up over a long-standing land dispute. “The Police came home and told me that your son and two others, Babar and Alam were lynched in the village. The three worked in a Kolkata factory and went to Diha to recruit laborers. The incident occurred outside the village where they had stopped to relieve themselves. This is deliberate killing over a land dispute going on in our village,” he said.

He added that the three were threatened by several people amid the ongoing dispute. On asking who he thinks might have beaten the three persons up, Sajid’s relative named Mohammed Shahid Hussain and Mohammed Abdul Qadir, the video of which went viral over social media.

The three hail from Kurisarai village, which is around six kilometers from Diha. SSP Gaya, Ashish Bharti, confirmed the development and reiterated that there is no communal angle in the case. “We are probing all angles,” he said.

On Thursday, local politicians and the relatives of the three persons obstructed the Gaya-Patna route in Belaganj for many hours in order to demand the arrest of the ‘perpetrators’, Rs 25 lakh in compensation, and a government job for Babar’s family. The blockade was removed only after the police announced the formation of an SIT to probe the case.

UP: Key witness in 2005 BSP MLA murder case shot dead, 14 including Mafia Atiq Ahmed’s sons held in custody

0

The Uttar Pradesh Police have reported that Umesh Pal, the key witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was fatally shot on Friday evening at his home in Prayagraj.

Raju Pal had been elected to the Allahabad (West) assembly seat in his first electoral campaign, defeating Khalid Azim, the younger brother of former MP Atiq Ahmed. Months later, Raju Pal was murdered.

The prime suspects in the Raju Pal murder case are Atiq Ahmed, his brother, and former MLA Ashraf. All three accused individuals are currently lodged in jail.

Umesh Pal was murdered by an unidentified man who fatally shot him as he exited the back seat of a Hyundai Creta SUV in Prayagraj. CCTV footage captured when Umesh Pal and one of his two police bodyguards disembarked from the vehicle, and a man appeared from behind and fired at him.

After analyzing the CCTV footage, the police have reported that the attackers arrived at the scene in both a car and a motorcycle. The police have also stated that the assailants were pursuing Umesh Pal’s vehicle and had crude explosive devices in their possession. In one of the video clips obtained, an individual can be seen removing a bomb from their bag and throwing it at Umesh Pal.

The police said additional men used improvised explosive devices during the attack, resulting in a cloud of smoke and inciting panic and disorder. Umesh Pal was quickly transported to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries.

Police files FIR in the case

An FIR has been filed against Atiq Ahmed’s wife, Sahista Praveen, his brother, and his sons Ahzaan and Abaan, in connection to the murder of Umesh Pal. In addition, the police have apprehended 14 individuals, including Atiq Ahmed’s sons, for further questioning regarding the case.

Speaking to PTI, Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma confirmed that Umesh Pal was ambushed with improvised explosive devices and gunshots in front of his residence earlier in the evening. Two of his government-appointed guards were also wounded during the assault. One of the bodyguards’ condition is critical and he has been placed on a ventilator. Meanwhile, doctors are currently operating on the other guard.

During a media briefing, Prayagraj police chief Ramit Sharma informed reporters that the attack on Umesh Pal occurred in close proximity to his residence. Sharma also stated that the assailants utilized two crude explosive devices and a small firearm to carry out the assault.

In the aftermath of the murder, Jaya Pal, Umesh Pal’s wife, approached the Prayagraj police and filed a First Information Report (FIR). The family of the victim registered a complaint with the Dhoomanganj Police Station, and a case has been filed under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Explosives Act.

Ten task forces, under the guidance of the Joint Commissioner of Police for Prayagraj, were instituted to apprehend the suspects involved in the case.

In the meantime, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, “The Special Task Force (STF) is thoroughly investigating the incident. We will nab all the accused. We will take the matter to fast-track court. We will give strict punishment to the accused.”

After protest by family and Muslim ‘activists’, Rajasthan police says no clean chit to Monu Manesar despite no evidence against him: Details

On Friday (February 25), the Rajasthan Police said that they were still collecting evidence against gaurakshak Monu Manesar, whose name was forced into the FIR by the families of deceased cattle smugglers Junaid and Nasir. As per a report by The Times of India, the police have so far not found any evidence against Manesar. His name did not feature in the initial list of 8 suspects released by the cops.

However, the move angered the family members of Nasir and Junaid, post which they protested in Firozpur Jhirka in Nuh, alleging that the police were directing their focus away from Monu Manesar.

They even blocked the Delhi-Alwar Road and the route from Firozpur Jhirka to Pahari. The protest caused traffic jams for around two hours, and additional police were deployed in the area. The Muslim community across Rajasthan also held protests demanding justice for the cow smugglers. A Muslim ‘activist’ called Waseem Akram, who was leading the protest, said that only one accused has been arrested so far and others should be arrested soon.

It was only after that the police released a new list of 12 suspects and included the name of Monu Manesar, which did not feature in the original list of 8 suspects.

Bharatpur IG Gaurav Srivastav stated that no one has been given a clean chit so far and that the gaurakshak is among these dozen suspects whom the police are still collecting evidence against.

“We released the names and photos of eight accused after their involvement was proved. Other than the eight accused named by cops, we are investigating the role of a dozen other suspects, including those named in the FIR. We will name them only when we have gathered the required evidence,” he told TOI.

The Background of the Bhiwani Case

On February 17 this year, the Rajasthan Police reached Haryana to probe the Bhiwani case in which the charred dead bodies of ‘cattle smugglers’ Junaid and Nasir were recovered by the Haryana Police.

The family members of the duo alleged that five Bajrang Dal members named Mohit Yadav, Shrikant Pandit, Rinku Saini, and two other Gau Rakshaks abducted Junaid and Nasir and later burnt them alive in Bhiwani.

Based on the complaint filed by family members of the deceased smugglers, they barged into the house of Shrikant Pandit and detained two of his younger brothers named Vishnu and Rahul.

According to Shrikant’s family, around 30-40 Rajasthan police officers entered their house at wee hours of the morning and assaulted the alleged accused’s mother and his wife (leading to the loss of the premature child).

On February 21, 2023, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations called a Mahapanchayat to extend their support to Monu Manesar. The ‘gaurakshak’ has worked extensively to protect cows from smugglers in Manesar and Mewat areas, the organisations stated.

As per a sting operation dubbed ‘Operation Loharu’, conducted by news organisation TV9 Bharatvarsh, SHO (Gopalgarh) could be heard as saying, “Monu Manesar’s location was not discovered there (at the spot).”

Odisha police arrest DRDO senior officer for leaking sensitive defence information to Pakistan’s ISI operatives in lieu of nude videos

0

On Friday, February 24, the Odisha police arrested a senior technical officer at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Chandipur. The senior official was allegedly sharing confidential defence information with Pakistani ISI agents in lieu of sexual favours and monetary benefits.

The Balasore police in Odisha arrested the accused officer based on a complaint filed against him at Chandipur police station. He has been booked under Sections 120-A, 120-B and 31 of the IPC, and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act. He has been identified as Baburam Dey (57).

The accused was usually present at his assigned duties in ITR, Chandipur, throughout the testing of practically all DRDO and other defence agencies’ missiles and cluster bombs.

According to the police, the officer was honey-trapped by a Pakistani agent who was operating from Rawalpindi with sexual photos and videos via Whatsapp. Dey’s mobile phone has been seized by the police.

Speaking on the matter to the media, Inspector General (IG) of police (eastern range) Himanshu Kumar Lal said, “A senior official of the ITR has been apprehended for leaking sensitive information to some foreign agents working in Pakistan in lieu of nude videos.”

“The mobile phone of the officer has been seized and further investigation into the matter is on to find out if any other persons are involved. A similar honey trap case was also registered in 2021. We have traced the location of the queen bee and it is Rawalpindi,” Lal said.

Like the 2021 case, the ITR official was allegedly honey-trapped by some female operatives from Pakistan. They were sending some videos to the official through WhatsApp and in lieu of that, he (the ITR official) had shared sensitive defence information with them, added Lal.

Meanwhile, Balasore SP Sagarika Nath stated that the local police, in collaboration with a central agency, were continuing their probe into the 2021 case involving the leakage of classified material to Pakistan.

“Recently, we came to know that some sensitive information in the form of visual images as well as sensitive communication had been transmitted to Pakistani agents. Following interrogation, we have apprehended the ITR official,” she said.

Notably, on September 14, 2021, the Odisha police arrested five contractual employees of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) unit in Chandipur on suspicion of sharing classified defence information with unknown ISI agents from Pakistan.

Several cases of honey trapping have emerged in recent times

Last year a contractual employee of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad has been arrested for passing confidential defence information on India’s missile development to an alleged ISI operative in Pakistan through social media.

On September 13, 2021, an investigation team of CIA-3 Ludhiana and Counter-Intelligence Ludhiana arrested one Jaswinder Singh over alleged links with a Pakistani spy who identified herself to him as Jasleen Brar from Bathinda. As per Paramjit Singh, Ludhiana Police Commissioner, Jaswinder has been accused of providing access to Indian defence personnel to the spy.

In June 2021, Delhi Police arrested a 40-year-old man for impersonating an Indian Army Officer. He revealed during interrogation that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI) was trying to honey-trap him as they considered him to be a real officer.

In fact, in the wake of the sensational arrest of the BrahMos engineer in the year 2018 for allegedly spying for Pakistan, the Intelligence Bureau issued a high alert against the hostile neighbour’s ‘honeytrap’ strategy, which is prevalent in India. The alert stated that Pakistan’s ISI has been utilizing good-looking Chinese and Pakistani girls to lure and set the trap on high-ranking officials and those involved in dealing with sensitive information.

Turkish journalists harassed, detained for reporting about the deadly earthquake, authorities investigate under draconian law: What we know so far

0

Days after a massive earthquake hit several parts of Turkey and Syria killing around 50,000 victims, Turkish journalists are being harassed and are being investigated for reporting and commenting on the disastrous earthquake. The Turkey authorities claim that the journalists misreported the incident and are investigating them on suspicion of spreading fake news.

According to the reports, the Turkish authorities are investigating the reporters based on the new law which was adopted by the country in October last year. The law made punishable the public propagation of misinformation and granted the state considerably larger powers to regulate news sites and social media. The Venice Commission, a Council of Europe legal monitor stated that the measure would restrict free speech while the parties in opposition referred to it as a ‘censorship law’.

The report by BBC state that there are around 4 journalists who are being investigated in the matter. However, Press freedom groups state that there are around 12+ journalists who reported about the incident and are now being detained, harassed or prevented from reporting.

One of the journalists named Mir Ali Koçer, on February 6 was smoking on his balcony in Diyarbakir city when suddenly his two dogs started barking. He recalled that the dogs had similarly barked during the 2020 earthquake. “Within no time”, he said, “I felt I was shaking. I felt the house shaking, I felt the TV shaking.” He then took the dogs and hid under the dining table. Later he happened to rush outside.

He carried his camera and microphone and drove to Gaziantep city which was the epicentre of the attack. He was horrified to see sights of carnage and people suffering in subfreezing temperatures in villages close to the earthquake’s epicentre. In Gaziantep, the earthquake claimed the lives of at least 3,000 people. “When holding the microphone, behind the camera or in front of the camera, I could not hold back my tears,” Koçer said.

During reporting about the earthquake, the freelance journalist talked to a few victims and recorded their ordeal. He then posted videos on social media in which the victims stated that they had not received proper aid. The saga continued for days to come when the victims kept on saying that they had received no aid for days.

Koçer claims that while he was reporting from the region damaged by the earthquake, Diyarbakir police placed a note at his residence, asking him to come to the police station and submit a statement.

He was informed at the station that he was under investigation for violating a recently passed misinformation statute. He claimed that after questioning him about his reporting from the epicentre of the earthquake, the authorities charged him with disseminating false information.

Koçer says that he was diligent in his investigation and spoke with everyone involved, including survivors, police, gendarmes, and rescue personnel. He asserts, “I did not release anything without careful investigation and evaluation.” Reporters Without Borders (RSF) meanwhile have urged the authorities to drop the ‘absurd’ investigation against journalists.

A support group called the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) claims that at least three further journalists are being prosecuted. Turkish journalist Murat Yildiz said that the government had threatened his job and his safety. He said, “They were continually following us and harassing us.” According to Yildiz, some of the harassment has also been perpetrated by non-governmental organisations.

Uncertainty surrounds how many other journalists are being investigated. Police are said to have detained 134 people on Tuesday due to “provocative posts” and to have arrested 25, although their identities have not been made public. According to the police, some of those who were arrested may have been spreading untruths, such as the idea that Afghan refugees were scavenging in abandoned neighbourhoods.

Reportedly, the arrests followed a warning from Turkey’s presidential communications director against endangering the rescue attempts with “lethal disinformation.” In order to encourage individuals to report posts that spread false information about the earthquake, the directorate officially released a smartphone app named “Disinformation Reporting Service.”

At present, reports state that there are around 4 journalist who are being investigated in the matter. However, Press freedom groups state that there are around 12+ journalists who reported about the incident and are now being detained, harassed or prevented from reporting.

Politics over education in Bihar: Purnea University BA exams postponed by Nitish Kumar govt for Mahagathbandhan’s ‘Ekjutata Rally’, BJP fumes

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, on Saturday, February 25, the Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar, and Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav will hold a joint rally of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in Purnia district. Due to Mahagathbandhan’s ‘Ekjutata Rally’ the Purnea University exam has been postponed. Following the Vice Chancellor’s direction, the Controller of Exams issued the order.

It is for the first time that an exam has been postponed for a political rally. Today, Purnea University students of BA second year were to write their exam, however, now the exam will be held on March 15 as the Bihar government has given priority to the rally instead of the examination.

The notice was issued on Thursday, February 23. This states information about the change in date for the exam. The students enrolled in the colleges affiliated with the university in the neighbouring areas have also been affected by the cancellation of the examination scheduled for Saturday. The reason behind the postponement was stated as the Grand Alliance rally in the notice.

Notice issued by Controller of Examination, Purnea University

The Bihar government has come under fire from the BJP for cancelling the exam. It has been questioned whether the rally or the exam should have been the priority.

Taking to Twitter, Bihar BJP leader Nikhil Anand slammed the JDU-RJD coalition government for prioritizing their political rally over university exams and accused them of pressuring the Purnea University administration to postpone the exams.

“The Mahagathbandhan is putting pressure on the university administration and educational institutions to make its rally in Purnia successful and get the examinations postponed. In order to make the rally of the coalition parties part of the Bihar government successful, even educational institutions have been engaged in welcoming and gathering crowds,” a tweet by Anand in Hindi read.
