‘Manipulative, sex maniac’ – Woman accuses Alt News’ co-founder Pratik Sinha of sexual harassment

On January 14, a woman accused propaganda website Alt News’ co-founder Pratik Sinha of sexual harassment. Sharing her ordeal from an anonymous Instagram handle ‘fightforjustworld’, the woman alleged that Sinha is not only highly manipulative and a ‘sex maniac’ but also used the same modus operandi that he used with her with other women to get them into a physical relationship with him. The woman also expressed fears of her allegations being dismissed by stating that after her post, she would be called an ‘RSS stooge, a BJP mole’ as she was targeting Alt News but had “been fighting against the right wing with my own means and ways”.

The victim alleged to have known Sinha for a few years, and as she was impressed by his work, she started talking to him when he messaged him in DMs on Facebook. It all began on April 24, 2020.

On the first day itself, Sinha asked for her number, and she gave it out of trust. For months to come, they talked over messages daily and later started talking on calls and video calls.

Sinha expressed his “more than friendship” feelings for her within less than two months. As she had academic commitments, she told him a relationship would be possible only after two years. Pratik agreed to it and said he “isn’t talking with, seeing, exploring anything or anyone else and hence would like to continue this”.

However, in November 2020, Sinha said it would not be possible for him to continue the relationship. However, they continued talking. In December 2020, he took back his earlier remarks and claimed he still had feelings for her. He pushed her to meet as soon as possible once the pandemic was over and they had their vaccination completed.

In February 2021, she stopped contacting him due to his forever-changing stances on the emotional connection; however, he did not stop pursuing her. In May 2021, he expressed his desire to continue the relationship and invest time in it. She mentioned that Sinha maintained he wanted to have a ‘monogamous’ and ‘exclusive’ relationship with her and said he had not been physically involved with anyone since March 2019. He always denied it whenever she asked if he was involved with anyone physically or emotionally.

In July 2021, he again expressed his “genuine feelings” for her and asked her to meet before he shifted to Kolkata, which was scheduled for September 2021. They decided to meet in the first week of September and stayed together for three days. During that period, they got into a physical relationship. She made clear her idea was not to have a casual meeting or a fling. When she asked him point-blank, he said, “he wouldn’t put in so much effort, changing two flights to meet up with someone, if it was casual”.

The woman further alleged that he also expressed his desire to marry her once she completed her education. By the conversation, it appears Sinha’s mother also knew about them.

After 12 days of the meeting, in the third week of September, he informed her that he had been misleading her and that all the assurances he gave about the relationship were drama. He further added he had not been truthful about his feelings for her. Also he was having relationships with other women as well. Feeling aghast and heartbroken, her first instinct was to make a hue and cry about it. She warned Pratik she would go public about it.

This is where Sinha’s female friend allegedly entered the scene to ‘resolve the issue’ between them. She wrote, “He immediately sought the assistance of his friend to mediate, who in turn contacted me. She messaged & called me on the pretext of “trying to resolve the issue” but the real purpose was to dissuade me from going public, to coax me into silence, & thus “protect him”.

Through the “friend,” she came to know Sinha was having casual physical relationships with other people. In fact, he was allegedly in a casual physical relationship with multiple women. She came to see that it was his modus operandi to stage a little drama about a severe relationship and lie about his single/exclusive/monogamous status to get a woman in bed. As per the woman, the friend called Pratik a ‘sex maniac’, “someone who is desperate for sex and would go to any extent of lying to get women into his bed”. Notably, he had been avoiding her calls and messages and even blocked her.

Calling Sinha a fake, a fraudster, and someone who “ogles at women’s breasts”, the woman expressed her anguish over the fact that someone who calls himself “the buster of fake information, champion of truth and warrior of women’s rights” allegedly duped her with lies.

Interestingly, when the woman confronted Sinha, he claimed he behaved like that because of a previous toxic relationship. He claimed to have a psychological condition that makes him lie to get what he wants, and he was trying to approach a therapist for the same.

In an unprecedented move, while attacking Sinha, the woman did not leave a chance to attack the right wing for no reason. She claimed, “One reason we hate the right wing is that they lie to people, they spread fake news, they deceive people for personal/political gains.” She added that Sinha was just like the people from the right wing.

Towards the end, she warns all the women charmed by Sinha’s work not to fall for him. “they are just an elaborate trap, laid to satiate his hunger for physical pleasure. It will leave you damaged beyond imagination and make you question your self-worth. Beware of such ‘champions of truth’ & their enablers who call themselves feminists, female rights warriors. They think nothing of looking out for this person’s interests because he is a public figure. They will try to convince you to keep quiet and move on rather than think about other women—they will claim all women agreed to consensual, casual flings.”

She added, “If they paint me as an RSS stooge because I question lying sexual predators & their manipulating allies, so be it. What’s the difference between us & them if we safeguard a manipulator, liar, and predator?”

Towards the end, she particularly mentioned that her fight was not against Alt News but against Sinha. She said, “Once again, my case is not against AltNews. I stand by the cause AltNews is fighting for. I had trembled in agitation and righteous anger when Pratik was supposedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This news also put brakes on my coming out in public with my narrative. I did not want an accusation that this story was coming in the media because Pratik has been nominated for the most coveted honour in the world, and the story is only trying to sully his reputation. I have waited for the entire fervour around the nomination to abate to open up at last.” Notably, Sinha was never nominated for a Nobel.

The Text of the ordeal

Hello reader! I am reaching out to you to narrate my personal experience about being a victim to a predator. I am not the kind who talks about personal life on social media, but in this case, I had to make an exception. I have chosen to speak out after a great deal of agony & thought, as the experience has had a significant impact on me, in a deeply traumatic manner. I had to think a lot since this is about a man who has a huge public profile; I had to weigh in the consequences of voicing my experience owing to that. But then I have realised it is in larger public interest to speak out. And the person I am talking about is Pratik Sinha of AltNews.

I will make only one preliminary remark in that respect. To those who may think this is a hatchet job, done at the behest of the right wing, I say most emphatically: it is not. All my real-life acquaintances & my small social media circle know the truth, and for the benefit of whoever else is listening I support Mohammed Zubair, Priyanka, Pooja of AltNews in all sincerity, with all the little might I possess. The campaign against Zubair is vicious, so is whatever is happening politically, against which he stands courageously. It is just that, after months of trauma and dithering, I have finally chosen to be true to myself and to all the women out there. No time is a good time, they say—it is in that spirit that I offer my story. For, my silence entails risk different from, but no lesser than, what is entailed in my speaking.

I have known Pratik Sinha since a few years. Impressed by his crusade against false news abounding in the media, I had followed him on social media. Based on my own views & opinions regarding politics, he too had followed me back. However, we never conversed with each other one to one.

On April 24, 2020, Pratik Sinha messaged me & got into a conversation with me on Facebook. At the end of the conversation, he requested if he could have my phone number to continue the conversation. Because of who it was, I overcame my hesitation & gave it to him. Then onwards, he started interacting with me daily. I was drawn into the loop of conversations & soon, he requested that we move on from messages to calls & later, from calls to video calls.

In June 2020, he told me that he thought the feeling he had for me was more than that of friendship & he would want to pursue a relationship— and that we should meet up once the pandemic restrictions are over. Since I had my own career/academic plans, I mentioned that & said I could only think of being involved in a relationship after two years, since it would take me that to complete my academic commitments, and that in the meanwhile if he wanted to move on, he could. To this, he categorically said he “isn’t talking with, seeing, exploring anything or anyone else and hence would like to continue this”. The conversations continued like before and, almost on a daily basis, he would call/message/converse with me. Almost every other day we would talk for hours together.

During November 2020, he suddenly said that he doesn’t seem to be able to connect emotionally and hence doesn’t want to pursue this relationship anymore. Still, we kept talking/messaging/conversing. During December 2020, he reversed his earlier remarks and said he thinks he still has feelings and would want to pursue this relationship. And that he would want to meet up as soon as possible once the pandemic is over or when both of us have our vaccinations completed.

In Feb 2021, due to his changing stances over the emotional connect, I stopped contacting him, but he continued to pursue me, calling, and messaging me. And then, in May 2021, he again started telling me that he would like to continue this relationship and invest time on it. Once again, his calls and messages kept pace with his stated intentions.

All this while, he had been maintaining that he was in pursuit of a ‘monogamous’ and ‘exclusive’ relationship with me and was not at all talking to, messaging, flirting with, seeing, or being physically/emotionally involved with anyone else in any manner. He even mentioned once that ever since March 2019, he was not physically involved with anyone.

Throughout our conversations on intimacy, there was just one thing that I had always maintained. Which is that “the last thing I would want to do is being involved with a man who is involved (either physically or emotionally) with anyone else”. I always asked if he was “involved with someone physically or emotionally”. His answer was always a categorical ‘No’.

In July 2021, he again reiterated that he had genuine feelings towards me and would want to take the relationship to the next level and hence would like to meet up as soon as possible. Then he suggested we meet up before he moved to Kolkata (which was most likely to be September first week) since he would get busy after that. There was also the fact that I had to move out of the country’ for my academic pursuits.

He proposed that we meet up in the first week of September 2021- so we met and spent time together for three days. We got physically intimate while together. I had made it very clear to him that I was not at all interested in a casual meeting or a fling; when I asked him point-blank if this meeting was casual, his response was that “he wouldn’t put in so much effort, changing two flights to meet up with someone, if it was casual”. Also, that “you do know me enough to know that it isn’t a casual meet” and he really wanted to invest time in this relationship and come and see me before I left for my higher education. The mark of his commitment to this relationship, he said, was that he was seriously thinking about marriage after two years, by which time I would have completed my education. When I asked if his mother thought this was a casual meet-up, again his response was that “she thinks there is something serious happening between us”.

As I have previously stated, there was one clear bottom-line for me in this relationship, and I articulated it clearly again and again. Which was, simply, commitment, seriousness, and loyalty. And in each instance, Pratik made categorical assurances that his feelings were in line with those- serious, committed, and exclusive to me. I was satisfied with his assurances and believed in his words.

But after 12 days of our meeting, during the third week of September 2021, he suddenly sent a message saying that he had been misleading me for the past one-and-half years and that all the verbal assurances he had made about the relationship were mere drama and he hadn’t been truthful about any of those feelings with me. That he was lying about his feelings towards me and also about him being ‘monogamous’ and ‘exclusive’ to me.

I was aghast & heartbroken, and despite my mental condition, I was struck by how blatantly and deviously the whole thing had been conducted. My first instinct, naturally, was to make a hue and cry about this. I told him I would go public with how he had led me on. He immediately sought assistance of his friend to mediate, who in turn contacted me. She messaged & called me on the pretext of “trying to resolve the issue” but the real purpose was to dissuade me from going public, to coax me into silence, & thus “protect him”.

I also learnt that he had not been either monogamous or in any exclusive relation with me. Just a month before he had come to meet me, he had met someone and had had a casual physical relationship that he had hidden from me. Indeed, he had been with multiple women, indulging in casual physical relationships. He was mostly fooling around, and I learnt that this is his modus operandi – staging a little drama about a serious relationship and lying about his single/exclusive/monogamous status, to get women into bed. His friend even went to the extent of telling me that she sees him as a sex maniac, someone who is desperate for sex and would go to any extent of lying to get women into his bed. Ever since I tried to confront him, by telling him that I may have to take necessary action regarding this dubious face of his, he has tried to avoid my calls, messages & even started blocking my calls, messages.

Yes, I had fallen for his trap. And at the end of it, I felt violated, abused, traumatised, threatened, betrayed, damaged and wronged. I feel my consent for the physical relationship was not an informed consent because I was lied to. To think that this man had slept with a woman on August 15, 2021, just before meeting me during the first week of September 2021, and still claimed exclusive feelings for me even during that meeting, shatters me.

For me, it’s very important for a partner to be loyal, honest, trustworthy, truthful, and also monogamous during a relationship. I do not judge others – men or women – on their ways. It is just a clear line I draw in a relationship I would be in. A non-monogamous man who had been honest with me would have still allowed me to make my choice and would have thus earned my respect. Had I known that this man is a liar, a fake, a fraudster, one who could stoop to any extent to be in bed with a woman, who ogles at women’s breasts (I speak from personal experience…that is what he did the minute he met me), eyes every other woman, and presses them to have video calls with them during nights, I wouldn’t have even touched him with a bargepole, forget about consenting to meet him.

He admitted lying to me intentionally, knowing very well that if I knew about his lecherous, womanising personality, I wouldn’t have consented to have any kind of contact with him. That he did so is in line with his dubious history, as I got to know it. Behind this veneer of a man who calls himself the buster of fake information, champion of truth and warrior of women’s rights lies a deceptive, fraudulent personality who can tell any lie for some physical gratification.

When I confronted him, he cited the toxicity of a previous abusive relationship as an excuse for his current behaviour. He even tried to convince me that he lied to me because of a psychological condition that makes him lie to get what he wants & that he is trying to approach a therapist. But look at his modus operandi & you know this is disingenuous. He picks easy targets – women who wouldn’t have much social media support, who aren’t popular, so that he can be confident none of his victims will call him out in public. Or that they will indulge him or turn a blind eye to his excesses because of who he is. I recall he scanned my friend list too – must have been to make sure of my modest social media profile.

One reason we hate the right wing is that they lie to people, they spread fake news, they deceive people for personal/political gains. Well, this man hasn’t been any different. For his personal pleasure, he can deceive anyone—hiding that side of him under his ‘righteous’ public image, which is a mere facade. As confirmed by his own friend, there may be other women he has wronged, just that no one has been strong enough to call him out in public.

I felt ugly and dirty about myself when this friend tried to interrogate me with the utmost private details, even asking for chat screenshots, photos, call records, conversations etc. (Indeed, the man shares most private moments of his being with multiple women with this friend and hence she has almost all details.) She tried her best to dissuade me from talking about his dubious character, that I conceal how he lies to get sex.

I speak to give one message to other women out there—a warning to those who might on his list of would-be ‘conquests’. Please don’t fall for his words: they are just an elaborate trap, laid to satiate his hunger for physical pleasure. It will leave you damaged beyond imagination, and make you question your self-worth. Beware of such ‘champions of truth’ & their enablers who call themselves feminists, female rights warriors. They think nothing of looking out for the interests of this person because he is a public figure. They will try to convince you to keep quiet and move on, rather than think about other women—they will claim all women agreed to consensual, casual flings.

If you were a victim, please know that you have an ally in me, that I know how you feel, and that predators like him must be called out. I know the name of at least one other woman—as revealed accidentally by the friend— with whom he played a similar game. Hope that victim gets justice someday.

In any progressive country, this act would amount to rape by deception. A crime. Unfortunately, in India, where marital rape is not a crime, rape by deception is not even considered. Men like him think as long as the woman doesn’t actively resist, it is consensual—no matter how fraudulently they obtained that consent.

It’s time the National Commission for Women, women’s rights activists, feminist groups, women, and men of conscience in general cedi out such abusers. Otherwise, all women may have to hire a private detective to unearth the lies peddled by men like this person, the fact-checker. Fraud vitiates the very’ foundation of consent; it also exhibits moral degradation of the worst order. How’s consent obtained after drugging someone different from consent obtained through a web of lies? How’s using women for sex and then throwing them off as dead dogs once satiated different from those who try- to auction women online? And then he poses to be a bigtime supporter of #MeToo, of women’s rights, and is ironically a member of the Mahila Morcha (Gujarat).

I am aware that I may be tagged an RSS stooge, a BJP mole, etc. But I have been fighting against the right wing with my own means & ways. If they paint me as an RSS stooge because I question lying sexual predators & their manipulating allies, so be it. What’s the difference between us & them if we safeguard a manipulator, liar, and predator?

If you as a liberal do not support me, then you are indeed telling young women like me who are antifascists, anti-right-wing, that the moment one of “our own” men violate, manipulate & disrespect you, we will not stand by you; instead, disown you in the larger interest rather than disowning the culprit. You are telling me that even the liberal, secular left isn’t there for women who are truthful, honest, genuine, ethical & principled. I may have to walk a lonely road, but I am up for it, if it’s for my principles and values, and for justice.

Once again, my case is not against AltNews. I stand by the cause AltNews is fighting for. I had trembled in agitation and righteous anger when Pratik was supposedly nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This news also put brakes on my coming out in public with my narrative. I did not want an accusation that this story is coming in media because Pratik has been nominated for the most coveted honour in the world, and the story is only trying to sully his reputation. I have waited for the entire fervour around the nomination to abate to open up at last.

All I want is to caution other people out there about what kind of person Pratik Sinha is personally. It’s our duty to unmask predators and their abettors. He counts on the silence of his prey. He counted on the idea that the women he wronged wouldn’t speak up. Not only is he a sex addict in a position of power and prestige, he thought nothing of trying to gaslight, contort, and deny. Several times I fretted about how he would rearrange the truth to blame me. But the trauma that lives in the victim’s life forever needs to be tended to.

Muslim man assaulted on train for molesting woman, not for refusing to chant Jai Shri Ram, complaint filed a day later after talking to media: Police

Today several media houses reported that a Muslim man was beaten on board a train in Moradabad for refusing to chant Jai Shri Ram. A video of the incident appeared on social media, where a man named Asim Hussain was seeing striped to waist and being beaten by some people.

He had claimed that he was beaten on false allegations of theft, and also for refusing to chant Jai Shri Ram. But now the police have revealed that he is not speaking the truth, and he was beaten by the crowd for misbehaving with a woman.

Asim Hussain had alleged that when he was travelling from Delhi to Moradabad on Padmawat Express, 8-10 people started to cause disturbances, and suddenly someone shouted ‘ye Mulla chor hai’ (this Mulla is a thief). Talking to reporters, Hussain then alleged he was beaten by a group of people, his beard was pulled, and that he was asked to chant Jai Shri Ram.

He then alleged that when he refused to do that, his shirt was removed and was mercilessly beaten with a belt. While the video did show that the man’s shirt was removed and he was beaten with a belt, the reason for the assault was not known from the video. Based on the claims of the man, several media houses like Siasat, Zee News, Aaj Tak, and many others reported that the Muslim man was beaten for not chanting Jai Shri Ram.

But after probing the incident, now police have said that there was no religious angle behind the incident, and Asim Hussain was beaten on the train on the allegation of molesting a women. Police also denied the charge that he was beaten for not chanting Jai Shri Ram.

Giving an update on the case, Devi Dayal, DSP Moradabad of Railway Police, said the probe in the case has revealed that the victim of the incident is giving wrong details on the incident. He said that there is no evidence that he was beaten for not chanting Jai Shri Ram and his beard was pulled.

The DSP further said that Asim Hussain was misbehaving with some woman on the train, which angered some passengers, and they assaulted him for that reason. DSP Devi Dayal added that they are also investigating the angle of misbehaviour with woman by Hussain, and if any complaint is filed, they will proceed further.

OpIndia also talked to Sudhir Kumar, GRP Inspector at Moradabad, and he informed that Asim Hussain approached the police with the complaint a day after the incident only after he was instigated by some journalists to make the false allegations. The inspector confirmed that there was no religious angle in the incident, and Asim Hussain was assaulted because he had molested some woman on the train.

The GRP Inspector also said that he was not forced to chant Jai Shri Ram, as alleged by Hussain. He added that Hussain didn’t file complaint on the day of the incident, but he approached the police a day later after talking to reporters.

It is notable that DSP Devi Dayal had earlier informed that two men who had assaulted Asim Hussain was arrested after getting information about the incident. He had also added that at that time no complaint was filed by the victim, but despite that the police taken the two accused into custody after considering the gravity of the situation.

The railway police cops onboard the train had detained the two accused after some passengers informed them about the incident, and they were handed over to GRP officials at the Bareilly Junction.

According to reports, the two men who had assaulted Hussain have been identified as Suraj from Pratapgarh and Satish from Raebareli. As there was no complaint against them at that time, they were granted bail after charging them with disturbing peace on the train. After Asim Hussain lodged the complaint next day, an FIR has been registered, and steps are being taken to arrest them.

It is notable that after Satish and Suraj were nabbed, they had told the police that they had assaulted Hussain for molesting a woman.

The Wire gives platform to Jamaat-e-Islami linked IAMC to insult, gaslight American Hindus in their lawsuit against Audrey Truschke

Last month, the US District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed the defamation suit filed by the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) against Hindus for Human Rights co-founders Sunita Vishwanath and Raju Rajagopal, Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) executive director Rasheed Ahmed, Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) chairman John Prabhudoss, and Rutgers University professor Audrey Truschke.

Notably, the court had dismissed the lawsuit despite the fact that Vishwanath and Truschke, among others, were found to have made verifiably false statements attacking HAF.

Now, following the US court’s arbitrary rejection of the complaint, the ultra-leftist website The Wire, which has always been eager to provide platforms to those peddling anti-India, anti-Modi, and anti-Hindu narratives, has now given Rasheed Ahmed, the executive director of the radical Islamist organisation Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), a platform to insult and gaslight American Hindus in their lawsuit against controversial ‘historian’ Audrey Truschke and others.

Rasheed Ahmed’s article degenerating the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) was published by The Wire on January 13, Friday. The IAMC executive director not only accused the Hindu American Foundation of ‘deliberately cooking up falsehoods’ but also spewed venom against the Indian government by calling it a ‘fascist’ regime, a usual narrative peddled by the anti-Modi, anti-India brigade, both in India and outside.

In may be recalled that after the verdict, HAF’s Executive Director Suhag A Shukla in a statement said, “It is incredibly disappointing that, despite the fact that Vishwanath and Truschke, among others, were found to have made verifiably false statements attacking HAF, the judge dismissed our legal action on procedural grounds. We remain convinced that the defendants’ false and malicious statements about HAF constitute actionable defamation, and we have every reason to believe that they will continue to spread their malicious lies.”

Despite the fact that the court had noted that false statements about HAF were indeed made, IAMC’s Rasheed Ahmed wrote, “HAF’s response, though, on losing the lawsuit, was incredibly audacious: they celebrated their loss by misrepresenting short phrases sans context, deliberately cooking up falsehoods.”

“This reaction by HAF is hardly surprising. It is in line with how the Hindu far-right ecosystem in India – the current government, its stogie media and their hate-mongering leaders – constantly distort truth to humiliate, harass, disenfranchise and even kill Muslims, Christians and Dalits, all the while claiming to be on the right side of the law,” Rasheed Ahmed continued to spew venom in his article.

What is IAMC and what does it do?

For the uninitiated, Rasheed Ahmed is the executive director of the Indian American Muslim Council, Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), a radical Islamist group that has alleged links with banned terror organizations such as the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and has a long history of lobbying against India.

The IAMC is a Jamat-e-Islami-backed lobbyist organisation claiming to be a rights advocacy group. In the past, it had reportedly collaborated with and even paid money to various groups in the USA to get India blacklisted by the USCIRF (United States Commission on International Religious Freedom). A detailed report by Disinfo Lab has exposed its links with the terror outfit Jamat-e-Islami.

IAMC founder Shaik Ubaid and member Abdul Malik Mujahid have headed the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), the US front for Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan. According to DisInfo Lab, ICNA has established links with Pakistan-based terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Rasheed Ahmed, who heads the IAMC currently was the former executive director of the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA). IMANA’s Director of Operations is Zahid Mahmood an ex-Pak Navy official.

IAMC had been caught spreading fake news and misinformation to further the Islamist cause in India. It had also been slapped with the UAPA in 2021.

HAF Chief reiterates how the US court had found that the defendants had made verifiably false statements attacking HAF

Meanwhile, reacting to the hateful and malicious article written by Rasheed Ahmed for The Wire, HAF’s Executive Director Suhag A Shukla took to Twitter to reiterate how the defendants named in the lawsuit were, indeed, found to have made verifiably false statements attacking HAF. She also took a dig at the ultra-leftist portal The Wire for providing a platform for Rasheed Ahmed.

“Facts: -Author of Al Jazeera piece defaming Hindu orgs was on Exec Com of @IAMCouncil (conspiracy) -Truschke & Viswanath “plausibly verifiably lied” about HAF in different ways IAMC resorts to hateful cartoons & a piece in @thewire_in—as credible an outlet as their reaction,” tweeted Suhag A Shukla.

UK imposes sanctions on Iran’s Prosecutor General after the execution of British-Iranian Alireza Akbari by Iran

0

The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Iran’s Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri after the execution of British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari, UK’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced in a press release on January 14.

The sanctions impose an asset freeze and United Kingdom travel ban on Mohammad Jafar Montazeri. James Cleverly in the press release said that imposing sanctions against Mohammad Jafar Montazeri shows Britain’s disgust at Alireza Akbari’s execution. “The Prosecutor General is at the heart of Iran’s barbaric use of the death penalty for political ends. Sanctioning him today underlines our disgust at Alireza Akbari’s execution and our commitment to holding the regime to account for its appalling human rights violations,” James Cleverly said in the press release.

The UK government in the press release called the execution of Alireza Akbari a “politically motivated act.” The UK government noted that the Iranian regime has carried out the execution of four people in relation to ongoing protests while Mohammad Jafar Montazeri has been the Prosecutor General.

Earlier, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the execution of Alireza Akbari and termed it a “callous and cowardly act.” He tweeted, “I am appalled by the execution of British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari in Iran. This was a callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of their own people. My thoughts are with Alireza’s friends and family.”

James Cleverly also denounced the execution of Mohammad Jafar Montazeri. In a tweet, Cleverly stated, “The UK has sanctioned Iran’s Prosecutor General. Sanctioning him today underlines our disgust at Alireza Akbari’s execution. The Prosecutor General is at the heart of Iran’s use of the death penalty. We’re holding the regime to account for its appalling human rights violations.”

Iran executed a British-Iranian citizen, Alireza Akbari, over accusations of corruption and espionage, CNN reported citing the Iranian judiciary-affiliated outlet Mizan on Saturday. As per the news report, Akbari was charged with working as a spy for MI6, the British intelligence agency.

Alireza Akbari was reportedly given over USD 2 million in various currencies. Citing Iranian media, CNN report said that Akbari allegedly shared information regarding 178 Iranian figures, including the country’s chief nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh with foreign officials.

China records almost 60,000 Covid related deaths in one month, claims ’emergency peak’ to the latest surge appears to have passed

0

China’s health authorities disclosed on Saturday, January 14, that nearly 60,000 Covid-related deaths occurred in the country during the last one month. The disclosure came after the country was chastised for failing to share data on the status of the pandemic. While disclosing the figure, the country reportedly said that the “emergency peak” of the latest surge appears to have passed.

Jiao Yahui, the head of the Bureau of Medical Administration under the National Health Commission, told a press conference that the country logged in 59,938 Covid-related deaths between December 8, 2022, and January 12 this year.

The health organisation also stated that the death toll only included deaths that happened in hospitals, and that the actual toll is likely to be greater because it does not include individuals who died at home. According to the National Health Commission, 5,503 deaths were caused by COVID-19-related respiratory failure, and 54,435 deaths were caused by other underlying illnesses combined with COVID-19.

The average age of those who died was 80.3, and 90% of fatalities were aged 65 or over, South China Morning Post reported.

Earlier it was reported that the ‘zero Covid’ policy imposed by the Chinese government which had triggered massive protests across the country, had failed and that there was a huge spike in cases. The government relaxed all the ‘toughest’ restrictions imposed upon people’s movements in China as a part of the ‘zero Covid’ policy, likely resulting in a spike of cases across the land. The country also happened to relax the Covid test norms and allow the people to run a few businesses in their normal capacity.

It also allowed underground businesses such as bars, internet cafes, gymnasiums, dine-in services, hotel conferences, training, and banquets to operate in normal capacities.

On January 8, China reopened its borders to international travelers after a nearly three-year closure.

While China wants the world to believe its numbers of cases and the vaccine developments, the World Health Organisation said that China is “heavily underreporting” the number of COVID-19 deaths from the current wave of the virus sweeping the country.

“WHO still believes that deaths are heavily underreported in China. This is in relation to the definitions that are used but also to the need for doctors and those reporting in the public health system to be encouraged to report these cases and not discouraged,” Michael Ryan, executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme said in Geneva.

The Delhi Police Special Cell on Saturday recovered a dead body, chopped into three pieces, from the Bhalswa drain in North Delhi. The body of the unidentified person was recovered after two persons were arrested for suspected links with terror groups.

The two arrested persons have been identified as Jagjit Singh alias Jagga and Naushad. During questioning, they confessed to their terror activities, and when the police searched their residences and nearby areas, the chopped body was found. Both the accused were arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) on Thursday.

“Delhi Police Special Cell recovered a dead body which was chopped into three pieces from Bhalswa drain after two suspects Naushad and Jagjit Singh told the police. The deceased is being identified,” the Delhi Police said in a statement.

During the raids at their rented house at Shradha Nand Colony in the Bhalswa Dairy on Friday, the police recovered hand grenades, three pistols and 22 live cartridges. The two person allegedly killed a man in the house, and they had also shared a video of killing the man with their handler. A forensic team collected blood samples from the house.

“During the investigation, in pursuance of disclosure, both the accused led the police team to their rented accommodation at Shradhanand Colony in Bhalaswa Dairy area from where two hand grenades were recovered, traces of human blood have also been found,” Delhi police spokesperson Suman Nalwa said.

When the police questioned the neighbours about the two men, they said that they had bought a new refrigerator but returned it a week later. Police suspect that the accused had chopped the man after killing him and kept the remains in the refrigerator, and later they dumped the body in the drain.

After the Tamil Nadu Governor’s office lodged a complaint with Chennai Police seeking action against ruling DMK leader Shivaji Krishnamoorthy for his controversial remark, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime Cell D.V. Kiran Shruthi said that the video attached along the complaint was found to be defamatory in nature.

The complaint was lodged by the Deputy Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Governor against ruling DMK leader Shivaji Krishnamoorthy for his controversial remarks against Governor RN Ravi.

“Video attached along with the complaint, video of the full speech of Shivaji Krishnamurthy, and verbatim of the above videos were legally scrutinized and found to be defamatory in nature which falls under the ambit of section 499 and 500 IPC,” read a letter Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime Cell D.V. Kiran Shruthi.

In a response to the complaint, he said the complaint along with the video has been forwarded to the additional chief secretary.

“The complaint along with the enclosed video has been forwarded to the additional chief secretary to the Government, Home, Prohibition and Excise Department of Tamilnadu for taking further necessary action at their end,” read the letter.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wrote to the state Director General of Police (DGP) over the matter and sought immediate action.

“DMK has always indulged in ‘abusive’ politics. They have always abused leaders holding higher constitutional posts, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We have written to Tamil Nadu DGP seeking immediate action. The hands of the police are tied. Local DMK leaders treat police stations as their own offices,” Annamalai told ANI. He said people will give a befitting reply to DMK in the elections.

“Chief Minister Stalin must come out and clarify because no one has come out with an apology and no FIR has been registered yet. I am sure people will teach them a befitting lesson during the next polls,” added the Tamil Nadu BJP Chief.

DMK leader Shivaji Krishnamoorthy on Friday sparked a controversy with his remark against Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi.

Addressing an event on Thursday, Krishnamoorthy said, “If the Governor refuses to utter the name of Ambedkar in his Assembly speech, do I not have the right to assault him?”

“If you (Governor) do not read out the speech given by the Tamil Nadu government, then go to Kashmir, and we will send terrorists so that they’ll gun you down,” Krishnamoorthy said.

The outburst came after CM Stalin accused the Governor of “delivering a speech that was extempore and deviated from the approved text”.

Congress and communist parties and other ally members protested outside Raj Bhavan against TN Governor RN Ravi on Friday over the speech row.

Tamil Nadu MLA Thiru N Eramakrishnan on Wednesday moved a ‘Motion of Thanks’ on Governor RN Ravi’s address, with a mention of the word ‘regret’ over his action.

Earlier on January 9, the Governor sparked a controversy with his statement that the name ‘Thamizhagam’ would be more appropriate for the state. Governor Ravi’s remark during his customary address at the opening session of the House on Monday, triggered an uproar, especially from the Treasury benches.

Legislators of the ruling DMK and its allies, the Congress and the VCK, started raising slogans against the Governor and staged a walkout.

Pakistani consulate in China tweets on Rights and Freedom of Uyghurs, Islamabad says account hacked

0

Hours after tweeting that Islamabad and Beijing will “work closely on matters of mutual interests including Rights & Freedom of Uyghurs community”, Pakistan backtracked saying that their Twitter handle of Pakistan Consulate General Chengdu had been hacked.

The tweet referred to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs being thankful to China for support to flood victims and then mentioned concerns regarding the Uyghur community.

“MoFA Pakistan is thankful for Chinese aid and support for flood reconstruction. We will work closely on matters of mutual interest including the Rights and Freedom of the Uyghurs community,” read the tweet from the official handle of Pakistan Consulate General Chengdu on Friday.

The tweet was seen as the first instance of Pakistan coming out in support of Uyghur community, a predominantly Turkic-speaking ethnic group primarily in China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang which has faced “serious human rights violations” from Beijing.

UN human rights report had said last year that China is responsible for “serious human rights violations” in Xinjiang province.

In a strongly-worded assessment, OHCHR (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights) had said that the extent of arbitrary detentions against Uyghur and others, in the context of “restrictions and deprivation more generally of fundamental rights, enjoyed individually and collectively, may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.”

However, hours after the tweet, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson said that the Twitter account of the Pakistan Consulate General Chengdu, China “has been hacked”.

“As of today, any tweet or message issued from this account is not made by the Pakistan Consulate General Chengdu nor does it reflect the position of the Government of Pakistan,” the spokesperson said in a tweet.

Beijing has been accused for years of detaining more than one million Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang region. China has vehemently rejected these charges, insisting it is running vocational centres designed to curb extremism.

The UN released a report in September last year on alleged violations of the human rights of ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in China.

The report found that mass detentions in China’s Xinjiang region from 2017 to 2019 were marked by credible documentation of “torture, sexual violence, and forced labour, as well as forced abortions and sterilization”.

The UN report further stated that the allegations of sexual and gender-based violence, including rape, “appear credible and would in themselves amount to acts of torture or other forms of ill-treatment.”

UN human rights experts have raised serious concerns about the alleged detention and forced labour of Muslim Uyghurs in China, calling for unhindered access to the country to conduct fact-finding missions and urging global and domestic companies to closely scrutinize their supply chains.

Uttar Pradesh: Hindu organisations protest after the severed remains of a calf found in Awagarh

0

In the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, remains of a dead calf were found at a vacant plot. Following this, Hindu organisations staged a protest outside the Awagarh Police Station in Sai Colony. After learning about the matter, Circle Officer (CO) Jalesar, Raghavendra Singh Rathore, reached the spot and promised to take action. Additionally, a case has been registered at the Awagarh police station.

On January 12, a calf’s severed head and skin were found near a vacant plot in Sai Colony. Shubham Hindu and other Hindu Ekta Samuh members protested when they learned of this and demanded strict action against the perpetrators. Members of the Hindu organisation also demanded that the police take appropriate action against those operating meat shops and hotels near Hindu temples.

Taking to Twitter, the founder of Hindu Ekta Samuh, Shubham, wrote, “Hindu Ekta Group gheraoed Awagarh police station for not filing a case of cow slaughter in Sai Colony and demanded the closure of non-vegetarian hotels and meat shops near temples. Also asked CO Jalesar and station in-charge Awagarh to register a case against cow slaughter.

On Friday, Etah Police in reply to a tweet posted by Shubham Hindu stated, “In this case, the local police conducted an immediate on-the-spot medical examination of the remains and discovered that the cattle’s remains had been eaten by wild animals. However, necessary legal action is being taken.”
