The caste census of the population has begun in Bihar on Saturday, January 7. Speaking a day before the census began, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar also reiterated his demand to conduct a caste survey at a national level.
During a media interaction in the Sheohar district, CM Kumar said, “The caste-based census will be beneficial for all. It will allow the government to work for the development of various sections of society. The final report will be sent to the Centre after the enumeration exercise is completed.”
We have decided to start the caste-based census in the state for the benefit of people in Bihar. We are doing this to understand other aspects as well and work for development accordingly. The Bihar CM further added that the caste-based headcount will not only enumerate the current population of Bihar but will also find out the economic status of every caste.
The first phase of the survey, which will span two weeks, will consist of listing houses and calculating families and buildings.
The second phase will run from April 1 to April 30. The second phase will collect data on people of all castes, sub-castes, and religions. Trained Enumerators, will also collect data on the financial status of the people. Although this exercise was planned to be completed by February 2023 earlier, now it will be completed by May this year.
Notably, an official from Bihar’s general administration department stated that as per an estimation, nearly five lakh government employees will be required to complete the survey by May this year.
It is pertinent to mention that the expense of conducting this caste-based census is to be met by the Bihar contingency fund (Bihar Aakasmikta Nidhi). As per a notification issued by the general administration department, the estimated cost for the survey is Rs 500 crore and the state government will spend the amount from its contingency fund.
An all-party delegation led by Nitish, in coalition with the then-NDA government, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August of last year, requesting that the demand for a caste-based census be considered. However, centre dismissed this demand to conduct a caste-based census. Following this, the Nitish Kumar-led government decided to conduct it on its own.
It is notable that the ruling coalition Janata Dal (United) and Rashtriya Janata Dal are known for their caste-based politics, and they are aiming to get this caste census done ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year
Chinese magnate Jack Ma will no longer be the controlling person of Ant Group, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing a statement put out by the Chinese fintech giant.
The changes are made to reduce Ant’s reliance on the flamboyant Chinese billionaire, who co-founded Alibaba Group Holding and helped create Ant, the Journal reported previously.
Ma continues to hold voting rights in an entity that controls Ant, alongside nine Ant executives and employees who were also given voting rights. Together, they jointly control the company, the statement said.
Ma only owns a 10 per cent stake in Ant, an affiliate of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding. He is said to have exercised control over the company through related entities, according to Ant’s initial public offering (IPO) prospectus filed with the exchanges in 2020.
Ma has mostly disappeared from public view since giving a speech that criticised regulators on the eve of the cancelled Ant listing in 2020.
Regulators had pulled the plug on November 3, 2020, on the initial public offering of Ant Group, the internet finance giant, which had been all but ready to press “Go” on its $34-billion stock debut in Shanghai and Hong Kong, the New York Times had reported.
NYT had reported that the initial public offering would have brought in more cash than did Saudi Aramco, the state-run oil giant, when it went public last year. And Ant would have raised the money on the opposite side of the planet from New York, which has long been the favoured listing destination for Chinese tech groups.
Ant Group’s controller Jack Ma, executive chairman Eric Jing and CEO Simon Hu were summoned and interviewed by regulators in China, according to a statement from the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

On Friday (January 6), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Jagadanand Singh courted controversy for labelling the Ram Janmabhoomi as the ‘land of hatred’ while talking about the under-construction grand Ram Mandir.
While speaking to the media, the Bihar State President of the RJD claimed, “Today, Ram is confined within 4 walls…His temple is being constructed on a land of hate (Nafrat ki Zameen)…Today in India, the ‘Ram’ of hooligans is thriving in place of humanity.”
“The Ram of the common man is no more. Only a form of him exists, which is confined within the walls of a temple…This is what happened. India was considered to be the land of Ram and Krishna. It is over now,” he further said.
#WATCH | Ram temple is being built on the land of hatred. Ram cannot be imprisoned in a magnificent palace…We are the people who believe in ‘Hey Ram’ and not ‘Jai Shri Ram’: Jagdanand Singh, Bihar state president, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Patna (06.01) pic.twitter.com/wC1SanBSQY
“Only a temple of Ram will remain…He will not remain in our hearts but inside the four walls (of the temple). This is beyond my understanding,” Jagadanand Singh continued.
On being told by a ‘journalist’ that BJP will be using Lord Ram for the 2024 elections, the RJD leader said, “Ram cannot be removed from people’s hearts and put under house arrest. Neither is He trapped in Ayodhaya nor in Sri Lanka.”
“We are the ones who chant ‘Hey Ram’ and not ‘Jai Shri Ram,” the RJD leader continued to divide the Hindu community based on religious sloganeering. This is not the first time that an RJD leader has tried to cast aspersions about the sanctity of the Ram Mandir.
Earlier in 2019, party leader Sanjay Yadav tried to drive a wedge between the Brahmins and non-Brahmins. He tweeted that everyone in India will be curious to know about the pujari (priest) of the temple once its construction is completed.
Yadav wondered if in the new, inclusive India, especially the one headed by PM Modi who has called for ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’, will there be a non-Brahmin priest in the Ram Mandir.
Shankar Mishra, the man accused of urinating on a female co-passenger in an inebriated state while onboard Air India flight AI-102 on November 26 traveling from New York to Delhi has been arrested on Saturday. The accused has reportedly been arrested from Bengaluru and is being brought to New Delhi.
JUST IN: #AirIndia passenger urinating case | Accused Shankar Mishra has been arrested from #Bengaluru, says Delhi Police – ANI.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR in the case on Wednesday and were looking for the accused since then. Several teams were constituted to nab the accused who was finally arrested from Bengaluru.
This comes after accused Shankar Mishra, who was absconding since the incident came to light, issued a statement through his lawyers claiming that he had paid ‘compensation’ to the victim and the lady displayed no intention of lodging a complaint.
The incident occurred on November 26, 2022, but it only came to the fore after the media, on January 4, 2023, reported about the letter the woman flyer, a senior citizen in her seventies, submitted to Tata Group’s chairman N Chandrasekaran, narrating her harrowing experience.
On Friday the father of the accused Shyam Mishra claimed that the case against his son Shankar Mishra is ‘false’ and that he was blackmailed.
“She (victim) had demanded payment and it was made also. Don’t know what happened after that. She must have had demanded something that was not met that must have upset her. Perhaps there was blackmailing,” the father of the accused passenger said on Friday.
Shyam Mishra went on to say that his son was sleep deprived and must have slept after consuming liquor served by the airline staff.
“This is a false case, my son had not slept for 30-35 hours, he must have slept after having the drink served by airline staff. He was questioned by the staff after he woke up.”
He also claimed that his son could not have committed such a crime, “She (victim) is an elderly woman, my son is 34 years old, she is like a mother to him. My son is married and has an 18-year-old daughter. I don’t think he would do it.”
On Wednesday (January 4), a security researcher named Alon Gal informed that hackers have stolen the email IDs of over 23 crores Twitter users and made them available publicly on an online hacking forum. Alon Gal is the co-founder of an Israel-based cybersecurity firm named Hudson Rock.
In a LinkedIn post, he wrote, “The database contains 23,50,00,000 unique records of Twitter users and their email addresses and will, unfortunately, lead to a lot of hacking, targeted phishing, and doxxing. This is one of the most significant leaks I’ve seen.”
Twitter database leaks for free with 235,000,000 records.
The database contains 235,000,000 unique records of Twitter users and their email addresses and will unfortunately lead to a lot of hacking, targeted phishing, and doxxing.
In another LinkedIn post, Alon Gal warned, “Hackers will use the new leaked Twitter database in order to target Crypto Twitter accounts (.eth in name or other methods), hack into high profile accounts (follower count or otherwise), hack into “OG” accounts with good usernames…”
He added that hackers will also attempt to compromise political accounts or anonymous accounts that did not use a dedicated email for their Twitter accounts. “It goes without saying that agencies around the world will use this database as well to further harm our privacy,” he concluded.

According to the creator of ‘Hae I Been Pwned’, Troy Hunt, informed, “Firstly, the 98% “pwned before” rate clearly indicates the email addresses were taken from other data breaches then used to query the vulnerable API.”
A couple of quick pieces of commentary now then I’ll do some deeper analysis later on: Firstly, the 98% “pwned before” rate clearly indicates the email addresses were taken from other data breaches then used to query the vulnerable API. https://t.co/zW4pp0UetL
As per a news report by Bloomberg, the leaked Twitter database (dating back to 2021) has exposed the names and email addresses of politicians, bankers, and even journalists.
“The data that was leaked doesn’t contain sensitive details like credit card information, Social Security numbers, or home addresses, and so far, it appears that bad actors haven’t exploited it to cause harm,” the report claimed.
On November 26, 2022, an inebriated passenger named Shankar Mishra, onboard Air India flight AI-102, traveling from New York to Delhi, urinated on a female co-passenger. In the latest development, it has been reported that the accused passenger had told his co-passenger that he is in trouble after he exposed himself and urinated on a female co-passenger.
Sugata Bhattacharjee, a US-based doctor of audiology and Mishra’s co-passenger on the flight on November 26 told the Times of India that the accused had downed four glasses of single malt during lunch.
“He looked visibly drunk, he asked me thrice what do your children do? I told a male purser to cut off his alcohol supply,” Bhattacharjee said.
Two women passengers were seated behind them. Although Bhattacharjee was asleep when the accused passenger urinated on the female passenger in seat 9A, however, he said that he witnessed the events that followed.
“Though the woman was visibly distraught the cabin crew members persuaded her to talk to the passenger who peed on her. A drunk guy is a drunk guy is a drunk guy, when a guy has done such a crime you do not bring it to the victim and allow him to apologize to her,” Bhattacharjee added.
Furthermore, Sugata Bhattacharjee said that after urinating on the woman, there was a point when Mishra dozed off. “After he woke up and sobered up, he told me, ‘Bro I think I’m in trouble’. I said yes, you are.”
In another update, the father of the accused has on January 6, claimed that the case against his son Shankar Mishra is ‘false’ and that he was blackmailed.
“She (victim) had demanded payment and it was made as well. Don’t know what happened after that. She must have demanded something that was not met that must have upset her. Perhaps there was blackmailing,” Shyam Mishra, father of the accused passenger told ANI.
Shyam Mishra went on to say that his son was sleep deprived and must have slept after consuming liquor served by the airline staff.
“This is a false case, my son had not slept for 30-35 hours, he must have slept after having the drink served by airline staff. He was questioned by the staff after he woke up”, Mishra added.
He also claimed that his son could not have committed such a crime, “She (victim) is an elderly woman, my son is 34 years old, she is like a mother to him. My son is married and has an 18-month-old daughter. I don’t think he would do it.”
It is pertinent to mention that the accused is still absconding. When asked about the whereabouts of his son, Shyam Mishra said that he has no knowledge about it.
Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Khalsa (LeK) is threatening the BJP politicians to resign from the party and threatening to kill them and their families if they do not. Such threats have been issued to several BJP politicians from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Ghanshyam Lodhi, BJP MP from Rampur, received a death threat from Sandeep Singh Khalistani of Lashkar-e-Khalsa on Thursday, January 05, 2023, on a WhatsApp number. According to the MP, the message sent to his number says that ‘leave BJP, otherwise you and your family will be killed.’
Not only this, the message talks about targeting BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leaders as well as the Indian Army. Lodhi filed a complaint with the police after receiving the threats. On receiving the complaint, the police have become alert and are identifying the sender.
Complaint filed by Ghanshyam Lodhi
The threats came from the mobile number +91 7609875306, according to the complaint filed by Lodhi. He also informed that apart from sending five WhatsApp messages, the Khalistani terrorist also called him 5 times.
On January 5, 2023, Tajinder Singh Tiwana, the leader of the BJP Yuva Morcha Mumbai, also received a similar threat on WhatsApp. The sender introduced himself as Sandeep Singh Khalistani from Lashkar-e-Khalsa and claimed to be the group’s spokesperson. He said that he has vowed to murder Tajinder Singh and his family if Tajinder Singh stays with the BJP.
Saying that they will Tiwana and his family like dogs, the terrorist also directed him to say ‘Hindustan Murdabad’ and ‘Khalistan Jindabad’. He added that they are going to target BJP and RSS leaders and Indian Army in the entire country.
Messages sent to Tajinder Singh Tiwana
After Tiwana lodged a complaint, Mumbai Police registered an FIR and started a probe. They are trying to trace Sandeep Singh Khalistani through the WhatsApp number.
In Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, a BJP supporter has also received threats for his life. Veer Singh Saini, a resident of Chhajalait, received a message on WhatsApp on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at about 11:30 pm. He has been asked to leave the BJP in this message. Veer Singh has been threatened with death if he does not do so. Saini holds a leadership position in the BJP’s Kisan Morcha.

The message reads, “Leave the BJP soon, or else you and your family will be badly killed. We will target BJP, RSS, and Indian Army.” At the end of the message, Khalistan Zindabad has been written along with writing indecent slogans against India.
After receiving the message, he lodged a case at the police station. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under section 506B (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) among other criminal offences. The number from which the message has been received has been sent to trace.
Going by the screenshots of the messages, it can be seen that the same messages have been sent to different BJP leaders.
In the last few days, this organization named Lashkar-e-Khalistan has asked many BJP leaders from Maharashtra, UP, Punjab, Haryana, etc. to leave the party. They have been threatened with killing them and their families if they do not do so.
Several leaders associated with Punjab BJP have also been threatened by Khalistanis. The message written in the Punjabi language reads, “I heard that a bomb has been found at the chief minister’s house. There is another bomb placed near the military base.” Security arrangements were tightened at the Army base in Punjab after receiving such threats.
Similarly, on December 29, 2022, Jalandhar district’s BJP vice-president Vivek Khanna and councilor Shaili Khanna’s son Abhilakshya Khanna were also threatened with death in Punjab. The caller identified himself as a spokesman of Lashkar-e-Khalsa. He called and messaged BJP leader and councilor’s son Abhilakshya Khanna saying that ‘Quit BJP and join Congress and vote for Congress party’. He and his family were threatened with death if they did not do so.
ISI formed this new terror group
Last year, the Intelligence Bureau revealed that Pakistan’s notorious intelligence agency ISI has formed a new terrorist group and named it Lashkar-e-Khalsa. The IB report said that Lashkar-e-Khalsa is very active on social media and is recruiting youths.
Lashkar-e-Khalsa wants to create unrest in India. For this, youth are constantly recruited. The report also said that the organization is trying to connect people through new Facebook IDs to plan terror activities. Pakistan intelligence officer Amar Khalistani is managing several Facebook pages called ‘Azad Khalistan’.
Afghan terrorists are giving training to Lashkar-e-Khalsa terrorists
Lashkar-e-Khalsa has recruited a large number of Afghan nationals to increase terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. It is also being said that Pakistan and Afghanistan are training people who have recently been recruited by this terrorist organization to operate weapons.
Afghan terrorists who are training have experience in using all modern weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). It is also being said that efforts are being made to involve local gangsters from Punjab and Haryana. For this, they are being lured to earn through drugs.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya here on Friday alleged that former Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and her family were involved in a forgery case in which a court here has issued summons against them.
“A special company court yesterday issued summons against Kishori Pednekar’s son Saiprasad Pednekar, his firm Kish Corporate and four others for forgery and submitting false documents while registering the company in 2012,” Somaiya said in a press conference here.
Kish Corporate company was “formed by Kishori Pednekar by submitting false documents,” he said, alleging that the company got Covid centre contracts worth crores of rupees.
The court has ordered the accused to appear on February 6, he said, adding that he will demand that the case be tried in a fast-track court.
“Mahalakshmi Race Court covid centre scam is of Rs 100 crore. Before admitting a single patient, the centre was closed,” he further alleged.
A case was registered against Shiv Sena (UddhavThackeray) faction leader Kishori Pednekar’s son Saiprasad Pednekar and his company on a complaint lodged by him, Somaiya said.
The company took crores of rupees from the Municipal Corporation for a year, he alleged.
Kishori Pednekar’s brother Sanjay Andhari had also got a contract worth crores of rupees on behalf of Kish company, he claimed.

Researchers now have a much better understanding of how climate change can impact and cause seawater temperatures on one side of the Indian Ocean to be so much warmer or cooler than the temperatures on the other, a phenomenon that can lead to sometimes deadly weather-related events like megadroughts in East Africa and severe flooding in Indonesia.
The analysis, described in a new study in Science Advances by an international team of scientists led by researchers from Brown University, compares 10,000 years of past climate conditions reconstructed from different sets of geological records to simulations from an advanced climate model.
The findings show that about 18,000 to 15,000 years ago, as a result of melted freshwater from the massive glacier that once covered much of North America pouring into the North Atlantic, ocean currents that kept the Atlantic Ocean warm weakened, setting off a chain of events in response. The weakening of the system ultimately led to the strengthening of an atmospheric loop in the Indian Ocean that keeps warmer water on one side and cooler water on the other.
This extreme weather pattern, known as a dipole, prompts one side (either east or west) to have higher-than-average rainfall and the other to have widespread drought. The researchers saw examples of this pattern in both the historical data they studied and the model’s simulation. They say the findings can help scientists not only better understand the mechanisms behind the east-west dipole in the Indian Ocean, but can one day help to produce more effective forecasts of drought and flood in the region.
“We know that in the present-day gradients in the temperature of the Indian Ocean are important to rainfall and drought patterns, especially in East Africa, but it’s been challenging to show that those gradients change on long time-scales and to link them to long-term rainfall and drought patterns on both sides of the Indian Ocean,” said James Russell, a study author and professor of Earth, environmental, and planetary sciences at Brown.
“We now have a mechanistic basis to understand why some of the longer-term changes in rainfall patterns in the two regions have changed through time.”
In the paper, the researchers explain the mechanisms behind how the Indian Ocean dipole they studied formed and the weather-related events it led to during the period they looked at, which covered the end of the last Ice Age and the start of the current geological epoch.
The researchers characterize the dipole as an east-west dipole where the water on the western side — which borders modern day East African countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia — is cooler than the water on eastern side toward Indonesia. They saw that the warmer water conditions of the dipole brought greater rainfall to Indonesia, while the cooler water brought much drier weather to East Africa.
That fits into what is often seen in recent Indian Ocean dipole events. In October, for example, heavy rain led to floods and landslides in Indonesian islands of Java and Sulawesi, leaving four people dead and impacting over 30,000 people. On the opposite end, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia experienced intense droughts starting in 2020 that threatened to cause famine.
The changes the authors observed 17,000 years ago were even more extreme, including the complete drying of Lake Victoria — one of the largest lakes on Earth.
“Essentially, the dipole intensifies dry conditions and wet conditions that could result in extreme events like multi-year or decades-long dry events in East Africa and flooding events in South Indonesia,” said Xiaojing Du, a Voss postdoctoral researcher in the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society and Brown’s Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences, and the study’s lead author. “These are events that impact people’s lives and also agriculture in those regions. Understanding the dipole can help us better predict and better prepare for future climate change.”
The dipole the researchers studied formed from the interactions between the heat transport system of the Atlantic Ocean and an atmospheric loop, called a Walker Circulation, in the tropical Indian Ocean. The lower part of the atmospheric loop flows east to west across much of the region at low altitudes near the ocean surface, and the upper part flows west to east at higher altitudes. The higher air and lower air connect in one big loop.
Interruption and weakening of the Atlantic Ocean heat transport, which works like a conveyor belt made of ocean and wind currents, was brought on by massive melting of the Laurentide ice sheet that once covered most of Canada and the northern U.S. The melting cooled the Atlantic and consequent wind anomalies triggered the atmospheric loop over the tropical Indian Ocean to become more active and extreme. That then led to increased precipitation in the east side of the Indian Ocean (where Indonesia sits) and reduced precipitation in the west side, where East Africa sits.
The researchers also show that during the period they studied, this effect was amplified by a lower sea level and the exposure of nearby continental shelves.
The scientists say more research is needed to figure out exactly what effect the exposed continental shelf and lower sea level has on the Indian Ocean’s east-west dipole, but they’re already planning to expand the work to investigate the question. While this line of the work on lower sea levels won’t play into modelling future conditions, the work they’ve done investigating how the melting of ancient glaciers impacts the Indian Ocean dipole and the heat transport system of the Atlantic Ocean may provide key insights into future changes as climate change brings about more melting.
“Greenland is currently melting so fast that it’s discharging a lot of freshwater into the North Atlantic Ocean in ways that are impacting the ocean circulation,” Russell said. “The work done here has provided a new understanding of how changes in the Atlantic Ocean circulation can impact Indian Ocean climate and through that rainfall in Africa and Indonesia.”

On November 26, onboard Air India flight AI-102, an inebriated male passenger, now identified as Shankar Mishra, travelling by business class from New York to Delhi, exposed himself and urinated on a female co-passenger.
Today, (January 6, 2023) accused Shankar Mishra, who has been absconding since the purported incident came to light, issued a statement through his lawyers claiming that he had paid ‘compensation’ to the victim and the lady displayed no intention of lodging a complaint.
The victim, on the other hand, alleged in her complaint that the crew members on board compelled her to confront the accused and negotiate with him, and accept his ‘apology’.
Meanwhile, in wake of Air India’s mid-air urination incidents, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday issued an advisory to the head of operations of all scheduled airlines with regard to handling unruly passengers on board and respective responsibilities as per the regulations.
The guidelines come in the wake of back-to-back two urination incidents on Air India flights last year.
