All ‘real-money’ online games to be regulated by centre government under the new online gaming laws, report suggests

0

As per media reports, the Government of India is planning to regulate all online games including real-money games based on skills as well as chance. Reportedly, the Prime Minister’s office overruled a proposal only to regulate skill-based games and leave out chance-based games. Notably, the gaming sector in India is expected to become worth $7 billion by 2026. The Indian gaming sector is dominated by real-money games, including Tiger Global and Sequoia Capital-backed Dream11 and Mobile Premier League.

Reuters said in its report that an Indian panel was set up to draft the regulations in August. It proposed a new body to decide if a game is based on skill or chance. The body suggested that the skill-based games should be governed by planned federal rules requiring registration, KYC norms, and a grievance redress mechanism.

For those who are not aware, games of chance basically come under the ambit of gambling that is banned in most parts of the country. If the government had decided to govern only skill-based games, the games of chance would have come under the state governments’ regulations. However, things will change as the PMO has overruled the suggestions given by the panel to leave the chance games out of the regulation cover.

As per reports, a meeting was held on October 26 where PMO officials objected to the differentiation suggested by the panel. The officials called for the expansion of oversight on all types of games. As Reuters report suggests that the information gathered was through confidential documents, OpIndia cannot verify the authenticity of the claims.

It is notable that the process of differentiating the skill-based games and games of chance is not easy as there is no legal clarity over the two and there have been different court decisions in contrast to each other. For example, the Supreme Court of India says that rummy and certain fantasy games are skill-based and legal, however, state courts have different views over such games including poker.

Reuters talked to three officials involved in the rule-making process, including two officials from New Delhi. They told the agency that the rules will give the central administration broader oversight on all types of games. The state governments will also have the power to impose bans on gambling or games of chance.

Furthermore, there have been reports of addiction to such games leading to financial losses, especially among youth. In some cases, incidents of suicides were also reported. The government has expressed concerns over the potential addiction to such games and platforms. Notably, the panel in August had recommended the inclusion of “de-addiction measures” including periodic warnings and advisories to inform people about the danger of such games. The panel also suggested imposing limits on deposits and withdrawals.

PM Modi expressed concerns over mental stress due to online games

In June 2021, PM Modi expressed concerns over real-money games and the resulting stress from these games.

While speaking at Toycathon-2021, PM Modi said, “Cheap data and the boom in the Internet are digitally connecting our villages today. In such a situation, along with physical games and toys, India’s prospects and potential in virtual, digital, and online gaming are increasing rapidly. But the concept of most of the online or digital games that are available in the market today is not Indian; it does not match our attitude. You also know that the concepts of many such games either promote violence or cause mental stress.”

Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘An Action Hero’ tanks at box office, the actor courted controversy recently by calling India a ‘homophobic’ country

0

Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s latest movie ‘An Action Hero’ has failed to strike a chord with the audience resulting in a low box-office collection.

Released on December 2, the film starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat in lead roles witnessed a slow start on day one and earned only Rs 1.31 crore and could not manage to gain momentum on day 2 either and collected Rs 2.16 crore taking the total collection to Rs 3.47 crores. The film’s strikingly low box office collection has become a cause of concern for the producers of the film. If the film fails to pick up on Sunday, it will become Ayushmann Khurrana’s biggest flop till now.

Notably, the Anirudh Iyer directorial venture received good reviews, however, looking at the box office figures, the 45 crore budget film may not even be able to recover its production costs. An Action Hero also includes item songs featuring Malaika Arora and Nora Fatehi as well, but they also failed to impress the audience.

It is being speculated that the reason behind the film’s poor performance at the box office is Ayushmann Khurrana’s controversial statement where the actor said that “India is a homophobic country.”

In an interview with Hindustan Times during the promotion of An Action Hero, Ayushmann Khurrana argued that his film ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ flopped at the box office because India is a homophobic society. Notably, the film had no homosexual character but was the story of a transsexual person who underwent sex reassignment surgery.

When asked why his films were not doing well in theatres, Khurrana responded, “I started with movies on taboo subjects. I suppose the type of subjects—it has to be a community viewing, and it has to have a wider film—the kids have also been watching. In fact, my last three films, including an LGBTQ film (Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui), have performed poorly commercially because our country is homophobic. Then there was Anek, a docudrama that was extremely niche in terms of tone. Doctor G was an A-rated film that performed reasonably well in theatres given its certification. For a while, that was my learning for making a film.”

NYT reports that the Iran govt is set to abolish the morality police, Iran govt denies reports

Update: Several reports have emerged stating that the Iranian government official’s statement regarding the abolition of morality police was ambiguous and the Islamic regime has not stated that it was going to abolish the morality police and strict hijab laws. An updated report can be read here.

In a massive victory for Iranian women protesting against the mandatory hijab law and brutal police action for violating it, the Iran government has decided to abolish the morality police which enforces the Hijab law in the country.

According to media reports, the Attorney General of Iran has announced that the country has abolished its morality police. This comes after more than two months of demonstrations sparked by Mahsa Amini’s detention and execution for allegedly breaching the country’s stringent female dress code. In addition, as the nation attempts to calm more than two months of protests tied to the dress code, Iranian officials announced they will reconsider the decades-old legislation requiring women to cover their heads.

“Morality police have no role in the judiciary and have been disbanded”, said Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, as cited by the ISNA news agency. He made the remark during a religious conference in response to an attendee who inquired, “Why are the morality police being shut down?”

The declaration came a day after Montazeri stated that “both parliament and the judiciary are working on the issue” of whether the legislation requiring women to cover their heads should be modified. In broadcast statements Saturday, President Ebrahim Raisi stated that Iran’s republican and Islamic roots were legally anchored, but that “there are methods of implementing the constitution that can be flexible.”

According to Iranian law, women and post-pubescent girls must wear head coverings and loose-fitting clothing in public. However, now this law is going to be reviewed.

These remarks are indicative of a victory for the protestors in the Islamic country and across the world who are raising their voices against the government and its hardline stance.

The morality police, the formal name of which is Gasht-e Ershad or “Guidance Patrol”, were established in 2005 under hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to “spread the culture of modesty and hijab.” The police squad consisted of both male and female members that patrolled the streets and public places to monitor women’s attire. The Guidance Patrol teams arrest women they think are not appropriately dressed as per Islamic rules.

The women found violating the morality codes are slapped in the face and beaten with batons on the spot and pushed into police vans. They are taken to a correctional facility or police station, where they are lectured on how to dress appropriately and are released after recording the details. The detained women are also required to destroy their ‘inappropriate’ clothes if applicable. Now, after the morality police is abolished, such draconian measures will be a thing of past.

However, it is not known if some other force with a different name but with a similar purpose will be set up in future after the heat of the protest dies down.

Protests erupted on September 16 following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish descent who had been detained by morality police for allegedly violating sharia law.

According to the reports, the incident is said to have happened on September 13 when Amini, a native of Saghez, Iran, had travelled to Tehran for a pleasure trip. The woman was with her brother Kiarash at the entrance to the Shahid Haghani Expressway when the ‘Morality Police’ arrived and arrested Amini for a one-hour ‘re-education class.’

Following her death, widespread protests erupted in the Islamic nation protesting the Sharia laws and compulsory hijab for women. Women across the world supported the movement by chopping their hair and burning their headscarves.

Not practical for Rahul Gandhi to attend winter session of Parliament: Congress MP KC Venugopal

Congress leader KC Venugopal, the Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, has said ahead of the winter session of the parliament that it will not be practical for the party’s senior leader Rahul Gandhi to attend it. The winter session will start on December 7 and is scheduled to conclude on December 29. However, as Rahul is busy with the Congress party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, he is unlikely to attend it.

Addressing the press in Delhi, KC Venugopal said, “Bharat Jodo Yatra is underway. It is not practical for Rahul Gandhi to attend the winter session of Parliament.”

KC Venugopal was speaking after the meeting of the Congress Steering Committee, where the party decided to hold the Congress Plenary Session at Raipur in February.

Bharat Jodo Yatra is the current campaign of the Congress party led by former party president and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi. The yatra started on September 7 from Kanyakumari and is scheduled to end in February 2023.

At the time of the winter session, Rahul Gandhi will be in Rajasthan, a state that has seen bitter fights over the last few years between CM Ashok Gehlot and senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot. The party will be hoping that Rahul Gandhi can at least bring together its own leaders, if not the public.

The winter session, which was delayed by a month due to the ongoing Gujarat elections, is when the Congress party is planning to target the ruling BJP-led coalition over various issues. However, with senior party leaders like Rahul Gandhi unlikely to attend, it is uncertain how effective this targeting will prove to be.

Liberals lose their minds and suffer a collective meltdown after the release of the Twitter Files. Here is what happened

Hours after independent journalist Matt Taibbi broke the story of internal Twitter communications ahead of the social media giant’s censorship of the ‘Hunter Biden’ story, liberals suffered an emotional meltdown on the social media platform.

The ‘Twitter Files’ (as it is now called) revealed how the Twitter moderation team routinely received directives from the Biden administration to censor tweets. They exposed how the censorship was justified under the guise of the ‘hacked materials policy’ by the likes of Vijaya Gadde

Matt Taibbi was attacked and labelled a ‘sell out’ by the coterie of liberal journalists and activists. Besides trying to shoot the messenger, they also resorted to fear-mongering and trivialising the censorship exercise of the ‘Hunter Biden’ story.

“Matt Taibbi is very upset that the Biden campaign asked a platform to take down some revenge porn targeting the candidates son. I’m sure matt would be totes cool with people tweeting out his adult kids dick bc they didn’t like him and would not ask his buddy Elon to help,” wrote Tim Miller, a writer at The Bulwark.

‘Journalist’ Mehdi Hasan, who works at the leftist propaganda outlet and unofficial mouthpiece of the Democrat party MSNBC, accused Matt Taibbi of doing Public Relations (PR) work for Elon Musk.

“Imagine volunteering to do online PR work for the world’s richest man on a Friday night, in service of nakedly and cynically right-wing narratives, and then pretending you’re speaking truth to power,” he had tweeted.

It must be mentioned that Hasan, who is now mouthing platitudes about journalistic ethics, had earlier compared non-Muslims to animals.

Senior reporter at NBC News, Ben Collins, too cried foul over the expose. “Imagine throwing it all away to do PR work for the richest person in the world. Humiliating shit,” he went on a tirade against Matt Taibbi.

‘Journalist’ Elias Cepeda also tried to cast aspersions on the integrity of Matt Taibbi. He remarked, “Watching Matt’s unbelievable fall into lazy, reactionary commentator and now pr hand for the world’s richest man is depressing.”

The cabal of liberal journalists and activists also tried to downplay the revelations of the ‘Twitter Files’ as ‘no evidence of wrongdoing.”

“I’m sorry, I’m just overwhelmed by how feeble this is. This is a discussion between people at a company about how to act responsibly, coming to the conclusion that the responsible thing is block this story. You can disagree with them, but there’s no evidence of wrongdoing here!” wrote Tom Coates.

Tim Dickinson, a senior writer with Rolling Stone that dismissed the ‘Hunter Biden story’ as a baseless conspiracy theory, went on to peddle hysteria and fear on the social media platform.

He claimed, “If Musk is willing to weaponize internal Twitter ‘privileged and confidential’ docs for political purposes, imagine what he might to with y’all’s DMs.”

The ‘Hunter Biden story’ and the background of the Controversy

Ahead of the 2020 US presidential elections, the New York Post published an explosive story about Hunter Biden’s problematic emails with a Ukrainian gas company executive from Burisma.

In its report, the news outlet alleged that they had accessed material from a damaged Macbook that was brought to a service centre for repair. The customer who brought the laptop never collected the laptop or paid for the services.

The shop owner said he repeatedly tried to contact the client. Though he could not identify the owner as Hunter Biden, he said the laptop had Beau Biden Foundation’s sticker.

The report had several documents and mentioned a video that proved that Joe Biden met a high-profile businessman from Ukraine when he was Vice President of the United States.

Reports suggested that Biden might have helped his son Hunter using his influence as the VP of the United States in his business in Ukraine. The Biden Camp categorically denied all the allegations.

Initially, the left and liberal cabal dismissed the report as a hoax, but it was eventually confirmed that the laptop’s contents did really belong to Hunter Biden. Following the restriction of the NY Post report, Twitter justified the action by claiming that its policies forbid the sharing of compromised information.

After the elections were over and Joe Biden was declared president, it became clear that the NY Post story was indeed true. Many Americans believe that if the story had not been censored, the outcome of the 2020 US Presidential elections might have been different.

0

On Saturday, December 3, wedding celebrations turned into mourning in Lucknow’s Malihabad, where a bride in her 20s collapsed during the garland exchange on the stage and died. Initial reports suggest that the girl died due to a cardiac arrest.

The incident took place in Malihabad’s Bhadwana village on the outskirts of Lucknow on Friday evening. According to reports, the wedding of 21-year-old Shivangi Sharma, the daughter of Rajpal, was scheduled on Friday, and the groom’s party arrived in the late evening. After the wedding rituals, the bride climbed onto a stage, waiting for the bride to arrive for the exchange of garlands. After some time, Shivangi appeared with Varmala, and put it around the groom’s neck after he put a garland on her. After the garland exchange, when photographs of the bride and groom on the stage were being taken, she collapsed on the stage, sending everyone into a panic.

The bride was rushed to the community health centre and then to the Trauma Centre, however, she died on the way. In the hospital, the doctors announced that she was brought dead. Doctors said that Shivangi died off a heart attack

Reportedly, the girl was unwell for the last 15-20 days, and she was having a fever. The doctor had said that her blood pressure was low, but she recovered a week ago. But on the day of the wedding, she again fell ill, and she was taken to Malihabad CHC, where her blood pressure was found to be low. She was given medication and when her BP became normal, she was taken home. But during the wedding, she collapsed and died.

The bride was cremated on Saturday by the family, and they didn’t inform the police about it. Bodh the families said that they don’t want any kind of proceedings in the case.

Malihabad SHO Subhas Chandra Saroj informed the media that the police got to know about the incident through social media, and a police team was then sent to Bhadwana village for enquiry.

“According to the information received, Shivangi, the daughter of Rajpal of Bhadwana village, was getting married to Vivek. The bride made her way to the stage and garlanded the groom. She collapsed on stage seconds later, causing guests to panic,” SHO Saroj elaborated.

In the past, a number of persons including popular celebrities have died due to cardiac arrests and heart attacks. On November 20, Andrila Sharma, a Bengali actress who was on life support after suffering numerous cardiac arrests died at a hospital in Kolkata. Renowned television actor Siddhaanth Vir Surryavanshi died on November 11. The actor fainted at the gym while working out. Puneeth Rajkumar, a prominent Kannada actor, died on October 29, 2021, in Bengaluru, from a major heart attack. Similarly, on September 2, 2021, television star Sidharth Shukla died of a heart attack in Mumbai.

Russia rejects European Union’s $60 per barrel oil price cap on Russian oil, warns of response

0

On Friday, December 2, European Union, along with G7, after much deliberation agreed to cap the price of Russian seaborne oil at $60 a barrel. Now, in an expected reaction, Russia has refused to accept a price ceiling on Russian oil and has warned of a response. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has advocated for an even lower cap.

On Saturday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia will not accept the price cap and will assess the situation and decide their future course of action.

“We are assessing the situation. We will not accept this price ceiling and once the assessment is over, we will inform you how the work will be organised,” Peskov said.

Russia’s permanent representative to international organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, warned that EU will end up ruing their decision to impose the price cap. He tweeted, “Starting from this year Europe will live w/o Russian oil. Moscow has already made it clear that it will NOT supply oil to those countries who support anti-market price cap. Very soon the EU will blame Russia for using oil as a weapon.”

Earlier, following the European Union capped the price of Russian oil at $60 per barrel, the president of the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen took to Twitter to assert that the oil price cap will ‘reduce Russia’s revenues significantly.’

“The EU agreement on an oil price cap, coordinated with G7 and others, will reduce Russia’s revenues significantly. It will help us stabilise global energy prices, benefitting emerging economies around the world,” Leyen tweeted along with a video message.

In the video message, Leyen said “As you know the EU and other major G7 partners will have a full import ban on Russian seaborne oil as of December 5. But to ensure that emerging and developing countries continue to have access to some Russian crude oil at limited prices and thus, today the EU, the G7, and other global partners have agreed to introduce a global price cap on seaborne oil from Russia.”

Regarding the objectives of the oil price cap, the European Commission president stated that it will first solidify the effect of EU’s sanctions, secondly, it will reduce Russia’s revenues, and thirdly, it will stabilize global energy markets by allowing some Russian seaborne oil to be traded, brokered, and transported by EU operators to third countries as long as it is sold below the cap.

Notably, earlier several EU member countries like Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania had objected that the proposed $65-$70 per barrel for Russian crude is too modest and far above the rates at which Russia currently sells crude oil.

Russia has been selling its crude oil to several countries at discounted rates since its war began with Ukraine. Among the buyers of the discounted Russian crude during that time, China and India are the biggest buyers purchasing the crude at a 30-40% discount.

Recently, Russia rejected Pakistan’s request to give crude oil at a 30-40% discount, saying that it will not be able to offer anything at present as all volumes are committed.

With the European Union imposing an oil price cap, it will be interesting to see how Russia retaliates and what impact it will have on the global oil market.

Member of Parliament from the North East Delhi constituency, BJP leader Manoj Tiwari has alleged that in a conspiracy by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government ahead of the Delhi Municipal Council elections. Tiwari has said that the names of more than 450 voters were removed from the voter list in the Subhash Mohalla ward in Shahadra just ahead of the MCD elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that this is a conspiracy by the AAP-led Delhi government to stop supporters of the party from voting in the MCD elections going on in the national capital.

Tiwari asserted that he will complain against this and raise a request for the cancellation of elections. “In Subash Mohalla ward, names of 450 voters have been deleted from the voter’s list because they support BJP. The MCD is also in charge of various dispensaries and hospitals, while the Delhi government is in charge of larger and more specialised facilities, including mohalla clinics.

IFFI jurors back controversial Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid’s remarks on The Kashmir Files

Few days back, Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid stoked controversy with his “vulgar propaganda” comments about the film The Kashmir Files at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The controversial filmmaker has now got support from the other three IFFI jury members.

In a joint statement posted on Twitter by one of the jurors, American film producer Jinko Gotoh, French film edition Pascale Chavance, and French documentary filmmaker Javier Angulo Barturen, said they knew about and stand by the comments made by Nadav Lapid who headed the jury at IFFI.

“We stand by his statement. And to clarify, we are not taking a political stance on the film’s content. We are making an artistic statement,” the statement read.

The 53rd IFFI’s jurors also expressed their ‘sadness’ over the “festival platform being used for politics and subsequent personal attacks on Nadav.”

Notably, Sudipto Sen, the only Indian juror on the IFFI jury maintained that the comments made by the Israeli filmmaker were his personal opinion. Sen told PTI that he stands by the fact that the jury did not award The Kashmir Files. The decision was unanimous.

“We gave an official presentation to the NFDC and the festival authorities. The jury board’s work is done. After that, if a jury goes in public and speaks something unexpected about one particular film, then it is their personal feeling,” Sen told PTI.

The IFFI jury head Nadav Lapid on Monday, November 28, in his speech during the festival’s closing ceremony, said, “That felt like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for a competitive artistic section of such a prestigious film festival. In the spirit of this festival, can surely also accept a critical discussion, which is essential for art and life.”

Lapid’s comments created an uproar with many people accusing him of being insensitive towards the sufferings of the Kashmiri Hindus. Israel’s ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, had to step in and issue a statement lambasting Lapid and telling him to be ashamed of his comments.

The Kashmir Files received huge critical and popular acclaim in India

Released on March 11 this year, The Kashmir Files proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year when regular Bollywood movies were falling flat at the box office one after the other. Though the film was praised all over the world, a section of Indian opposition parties and leftists tried to run down the film or discredit the story shown in the film. Starring Anupam Kher, Darshan Pathak, Mithun Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi in the lead roles the Vivek Agnihotri directorial earned around Rs 337.23 crore, making it the first Hindi film to cross the Rs 300 crore club during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kashmir Files is based on the Kashmiri Hindu genocide perpetrated in the valley in the late 1980s, and 1990s where Islamist terrorists backed by Pakistan unleashed terror upon Kashmiri Hindus leaving lakhs homeless and dead. The film depicts incidents inspired by real-life where Kashmiri Hindus were targeted because of their religious identity and were brutally raped, murdered, and driven out of their homes.
