‘They started pelting stones as the procession reached Masjid’: Sub Inspector Medha Lal Meena who was shot during Jahangirpuri violence

Sub Inspector Medha Lal Meena of the Delhi Police, who was shot during the violence in the Hanuman Jayanti procession in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area yesterday, has spoken out about the incident. Meena revealed the episodes of violence he witnesses while on duty and how he was injured, in an interview with ABP News.

Meena stated that he was on duty during the Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra. This was the third procession of the day, with the first two already completed. This procession was almost finished as well, but as soon as it arrived at the Masjid in the C block in Jahangirpuri, there were hints of violence. “There were so many people gathered around the Masjid. There were men and women and also small children nearby. The people in the Shobha Yatra were chanting slogans of Jai Shri Ram and were moving peacefully,” he stated.

However, as the procession approached the Masjid, stone-pelting began from surrounding roofs. “Rioting began as soon as the Shobha Yatra arrived in front of the Masjid, as people threw stones from surrounding roofs,” Meena recounted.

Meena stated that the police were able to control the situation and instructed the crowd to maintain calm. However, as the procession progressed, the crowd on the opposing side invaded the Kushal Chowk and sparked the mayhem. “The Shobha Yatra continued, but after a while, people from the C Block side stormed the Kushal Chowk and began pelting stones and glass bottles. They carried a variety of weapons, including batons, swords, and butcher knives” said Meena adding that the crowd from the Masjid side even consisted of women and small kids.

“People were pelting bricks from their terrace and the youth was leading the mob,” SI Meena said.

On being asked about his injury and the firing that took place, Meena said, “There were eight to ten rounds of firing from the side of the mob one of which hit my hand.” He clarified that there was no firing from the side of the police though. Senior officers of the nearby station were present at the spot and were trying to get hold of the situation.

Meena said that many of his fellow policemen were injured in attack by swords. “Many policemen were injured by sword too. Some were hit on the back and some on their head. Constable Suman was hit on his hand and back. All are under treatment now,” he added.

Meena also revealed that the attackers were talking in the Bangladeshi language. “They were speaking in Bengali-Bangladeshi language. I don’t know. They were sloganeering in the Bangladeshi language,” he remarked.

On being asked about any pre-emptive information and the prior planning of the attack, Meena said, “There was stone pelting from the roofs. Who will take stones to their roof? It was not clear if stones were collected prior or not. But stone pelting was from the rooftops nearby.”

The Delhi Police has filed an FIR in connection with the violence that occurred in Jahangirpuri yesterday. The matter is being probed by the Delhi Police’s special cell and crime branch. To inquire into the incident, ten investigative teams have been formed.

Locals claim that Jahangirpuri is a hotspot for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Delhi, particularly in C Block and H2 Jhuggis. Jahangirpuri’s B Block has a sizable Muslim population.

More personnel have been deployed in the areas near Jahangirpuri to avoid any unexpected incidents. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Delhi Police Commissioner and directed him to maintain a careful check on the region’s law and order situation.

Stone-pelting at Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra after procession passed near an Iftar gathering in a Mosque in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool

After horrific reports of stone-pelting on the Hanuman Jayanti procession at Jahangirpuri in Delhi, similar news has come from Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. On Saturday night, stones were pelted at a Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra, organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in Holagunda, Kurnool.

When a Shobha Yatra to mark the Hanuman Jayanti was being taken out in Holagunda, it irked the people present inside a local Mosque for an Iftar gathering. As the procession passed, people inside the mosque complained about the ‘loud’ music, which led to the violence. When the procession moved away from the mosque after a request by the Police, the organizers started playing the music again. Reportedly this led to stone-pelting and the procession came under attack.

Kurnool SP, Sudheer Reddy has however blamed the music played in the procession as one of the reasons for the violence. He said, “The VHP organized Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in Holagunda. They used the DJ sets against the advice of the police. When they went near the mosque, police asked them to shut down the DJ sets. But, they stopped in front of the mosque and started raising ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans. In response, the people from the Muslim community started shouting Allahu Akhbar.”

After the Police force was deployed in large numbers, the situation was taken into control and the crowd was asked to disperse. While 15 people suffered minor injuries in the incident, 20 have been taken into custody based on videos and CCTV footage. Section 144 is imposed in the area to control the situation.

Condemning the violence, Bhartiya Janta Party’s Andhra Pradesh state President Somuveer Raju has demanded the immediate arrest of those who attacked the Hanuman Jayanti procession.

‘No one attacks Masjid, it was to save Hindus’: VHP & Bajrang Dal refute claims of Hindus making human chain to save Mosque in Katihar

A photograph is making rounds on social media networks on the occasion of Ram Navami Shobhayatra from Katihar, Bihar. In the photograph, a group of Hindus can be seen making a human chain in front of Jama Masjid in the district. Several people are sharing the photograph with the claim that the human chain was made by Hindus to save Jama Masjid and Muslims from ‘Hindutva’.

The photograph has been shared widely by the left-liberal section of social media with that claim. State Vice President of NSUI said, “Hindu brothers holding each other hand for the security of the mosque in Bihar & Saving Masjid from Hindutva, these brothers worked like Raindrops in the hot sun. Bond of Brotherhood, Unity & peace never Breaks until Goons not born.”

‘Why would a mosque need protection?’

Contrary to the claims made on social media, the organizers of Ram Navami Shobhayatra have denied forming a human chain to save the mosque. Speaking to Opindia, Pawan Kumar Poddar questioned, “Why would a mosque need protection? Who was going to attack the mosque? We never attack mosques or Muslims. We live peacefully in Katihar. The human chain was formed to save Hindus from any difficulty.”

He added, “Every year Bhavya Ram Navami Shobhayatra takes place in Katihar. Every year some people in Muslim dominating areas would stand and raise provocative slogans to cause disturbance in the Shobhayatra. We formed human chains at several locations to ensure every devotee attending Shobhayatra was safe while passing through these areas.”

He said the photograph was misrepresented on social media. It gave a wrong impression of Ram Bhakts. Poddar said, “Ram Bhakts never attack any Muslim or Mosque. We never cause any problem for the Muslims in Katihar. We never attempted to cause any trouble to them. Thus there was no need for a human chain to save the mosque. The only reason human chains were formed was to save the devotees from any mishap.”

Speaking to BBC Hindi, Ritesh Dubey, district chief of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, said, “We did not form a human chain to save the mosque. The devotees involved in our Shobhayatra should not face any kind of difficulty, so we make a procession by making a human chain.”

Reacting to the incident after the news broke out in the media, Chattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel said, “The state has seen that the police have the power to stop people from taking law into their hands. Be it Prakash Nayak’s son or Bhupesh Baghel’s father, no one is bigger than the law. The Police action was quick.”

Police cancel permission for the Hanuman Jayanti procession in the old city of Bhopal

The Bhopal Police on Saturday (April 16) cancelled the permission granted for the Hanuman Jayanti procession in the old city of Bhopal, citing security reasons. The cops said that the procession could pass through parts of the city other than the old city area of Bhopal.

The decision had come after a delegation of Muslim clerics led by Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadwi met DGP Sudhir Saxena and Home Minister Narottam Mishra. The clerics in the city raised concerns over the permission granted for the Hanuman Jayanti procession. They said that conducting procession in the Muslims-dominated localities would be fraught with danger.

According to the reports, the vice-president of Jai Maa Bhavani Hindu Sangathan (JMBHS), Naveen Khare, had sought permission to initiate the Hanuman Jayanti procession from the Khedapati Hanuman Temple. As per the rituals, the procession was supposed to pass through the old city of Bhopal and other parts of the city.

Riots in Khargone and razing down of houses of rioters

On April 10, a Ram Navmi procession in the Khargone area of Madhya Pradesh was attacked by Islamists which led to communal riots disrupting peace in the state. Stones were pelted at the procession that began in the Talab Chowk area of Khargone.

Riots escalated after several vehicles and shops were set on fire. The cops struggled to pacify the situation and fired tear gas shells to disperse the violent crowd. During the violence, a total of 24 people were injured, including six police personnel.

On April 14, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced financial assistance to the people who lost their homes in the Khargone riots. He said that the stone pelters and the rioters will be greeted with bulldozers and will have to pay the price for damaging the properties in the state.

“The state government will rebuild the burnt properties and will help the victims financially. But I will not spare the rioters. The cost of reconstruction of the burnt homes will be recovered from them. They will be greeted with bulldozers, not flowers”, he affirmed while addressing the crowd on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti.

The Madhya Pradesh government demolished the properties of the stone pelters. “In Madhya Pradesh, we have passed the Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property and Recovery of Damage Bill. The rioters of Khargone will not only be punished but also the damages will be recovered from them. The state government is setting up a claims tribunal for this,” he had announced.

Karnataka: Mob pelts stones at cops, try to thwart police action against illegal cattle slaughterhouses, read details

On Saturday (April 16), a frenzied mob pelted stones at the police in a bid to stop them from raiding illegal cattle slaughterhouses. The incident took place in the Allipura village in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka.

The matter came to light after the GauGyan Foundation, an NGO which works to prevent the illegal slaughter of bovine animals, posted about it on social media. In a tweet, it had informed that about 150 cows and bulls were kept for illegal slaughter and how cattle and their hides, organs and blood could be spotted in the vicinity of the police station.

“The activity is going on near 4 mosques in the area. Our team has reached the ground with police officials, however, cattle have started to be whisked away from other spots due to lax police action,” the NGO had further added.

In a video shared by GauGyan Foundation, several burqa-clad women were seen harassing the police who had gone to the site to prevent illegal cattle slaughter. While refusing to co-operation, the mob began obstructing the cops in the line of duty.

“Mob led by burqa-clad women gathering, threatening of violence and obstructing Karnatakapolice for their action against brutality on, and illegal slaughter of gaumatas and nandis. Are they above the law?” it inquired.

In another video shared by the NGO, it could be seen that the cows were kept in poor condition and were being readied for slaughter. Meanwhile, a mob of men and women had gathered at the site and destroyed the vacuum pipe of the truck that was used to rescue the bovine animals.

It added, “Mob has gathered, they have broken the vacuum pipe of one of the trucks in which rescued gauvansh were loaded – brakes have been failed. Volunteers and cops surrounded by the mob.”

The vehicle in which the NGO members were travelling came under the attack of the mob. They pelted stones and broke the glass panes of a police vehicle. However, the GauGyan Foundation members, with the help of the cops, were able to rescue the bovine animals and escape unhurt.

“Brave action by Chikbellapura police! All gauvansh and volunteers are out safely. We thank the police for rescuing the gauvansh and our volunteers from the murderous mob,” the NGO thanked the police in a tweet.

The GauGyan Foundation had also shared visuals of the police car, which came under the attack of the vicious mob.

Opindia had earlier reported how Muslim residents of Byndoor in Udupi district had boycotted fishermen at the Gangolli fishing port after they had taken part in a mega Padayatra organised to protest against illegal theft and slaughter of cows in October last year.

Several fisherwomen had participated in the protest, irking the local Muslims. Hence, in retaliation, members of the Muslim community had enforced a ban on purchasing fishes from these fisherfolks from Gangolli. In response, the locals stood in solidarity with the fisherfolks and had extended moral support to the fisherwomen of Gangolli.

On the other hand, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal (BD) took strong exceptions to the decision of a particular community for boycotting fish purchases from Gangolli fishing port.

The workers of the local cashew factory had also extended unequivocal support to the fisherwomen at Gangolli fish market during the incident and instilled confidence in them. They had assured the fish vending women that Hindus from different villages would come to Gangolli to purchase fish.
