Mamata Banerjee visits Sola Ana Masjid in Bhabanipur to seek blessings ahead of by-poll at the assembly constituency

0

Mamata Banerjee, ahead of the by-poll for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, paid a visit to the Sola Ana Masjid in the area to seek blessings. The by-poll for the constituency will be conducted on the 30th of September, with results to be declared three days later on the 3rd of October.

The Sola Ana Masjid is located in the Bhabanipur constituency itself. The West Bengal Chief Minister had filed her nomination from the constituency on Friday. Ahead of the polls earlier this year, Mamata Banerjee had decided to contest the elections from Nandigram, where she lost against former TMC stalwart and current BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Prior to that, Banerjee had been an elected representative from Bhabanipur itself. After Trinamool Congress secured a comprehensive victory in the assembly elections, Banerjee is making a return to the constituency that had been her own for 10 years. Earlier, TMC MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay had resigned after winning the seat.

The BJP has decided to field Priyanka Tibrewal for the Bhabanipur by-poll. Priyanka Tibrewal is an advocate by profession who had joined the BJP in the year 2014. She is a practicing lawyer at the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court. Prior to joining BJP, she had worked a legal counsel for singer and BJP leader Babul Supriyo.

Priyanka Tibrewal is one of the petitioners in the Bengal post-poll violence cases, which have led to the Calcutta High Court ordering CBI and SIT probe in the cases. Her petition has also led the high court order for a second autopsy of BJP leader Abhijit Sarkar, who was killed in post-poll violence on May 2.

Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar releases audio tape after rumours of his death surface

Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar on Monday released an audio tape to refute the rumours about his death.

According to Afghan news channel TOLO News, Baradar, who is also the deputy prime minister in the newly formed Taliban government, released an audio message to confirm that he was alive and was not even injured. Taliban spokesperson Mohammad Naeem tweeted the message.

He blamed ‘fake propaganda’ for the death rumours. Abdul Ghani Baradar is number two to Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund.

There were reports and rumours that he was injured in a shootout between rival Taliban factions where he succumbed to his injuries. In his audio tape, he said that he had been away on trips last few days and without disclosing where he was, he said he was fine and as are his ‘brothers and friends’.

Taliban’s supreme leader Habitullah Akhundzada was also rumoured to be killed several years back but Taliban Spokesperson just two weeks before taking over Afghanistan revealed he was alive and in Kandahar. However, he is now rumoured to have contracted COVID-19 or has been killed in a bombing.

Who is Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is one of the four co-founders of Taliban movement back in 1994. As per Interpol, Mullah Baradar was born in Weetmak village in Dehrawood district, in the Uruzgan province of Afghanistan, in 1968. He is a Durrani Pashtun of the Popalzai tribe, the same as former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.

After founding the Taliban, he quickly rose to the ranks of a military strategist and commander and became a key leader. When the Taliban government was toppled by the American forces during the ‘War on Terror’, Mullah Baradar was serving as Deputy Minister of Defence.

In 2010, he was arrested by the American forces in a joint US-Pakistani operation in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi. On September 21, 2018, Pakistani officials released Mullah Baradar from their custody as a condition for talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. He is reputedly one of those very few in the ranks of the Taliban who favoured talks with the US and the Afghan government.

‘Not sure if grandfather met with an accident or it was planned’: Grandson of former President Giani Zail Singh joins BJP

0

On September 13, Inderjeet Singh, grandson of former President of India Giani Zail Singh, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at party headquarters in Delhi in the presence of Dushyant Gautam, National General Secretary BJP, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other leaders.

‘It was my grandfather’s wish’

Inderjeet, while addressing at the ceremony, said that the wish of his grandfather Giani Zail Singh had been finally fulfilled. He said, “Everyone knows how Congress treated him despite him being loyal to the family. It had hurt him.” Singh said that when he was trying to make his career in the film industry, he was called by the former President to Delhi so that he could join politics.

“He called me and asked me to go and take blessings from Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also sent me to meet and take blessings from Lal Krishna Advani. You might have remembered that when Madan Lal Khurana became Chief Minister of Delhi, I did a lot of rallies for him though I had not joined BJP at that time. Giani Ji wanted me to join BJP and not that party.”

Singh raised questions over the accident in which Giani Zail Singh died

He said, “He was preparing me for politics, but then that accident happened that took his life. I am not going into if the accident happened or it was planned. We will talk about it some other day. As there was no one to guide me, I went back to Punjab.” Singh further added that later he started doing social work and travelled across India to bring members of Vishwakarma Samaj under one roof. “I succeed to some extent as well,” he added.

He said he met BJP leader and president of BJP JP Nadda sometime back, who had asked him about the work he has been doing. After learning about his social work, Nadda offered him to join BJP, Singh claimed.

Giani’s son-in-law had joined BJP in 2019

In 2019, the son-in-law of former President Giani Zail Singh, Sarwan Singh Channy, had also joined BJP in the presence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and other leaders. Giani Zail Singh had served as the 7th President of India between 1982 and 1987. He also served as home minister of India. He was elected as Chief Minister of Punjab under Congress rule in 1972.

The former President had a conflicted relationship with Rajiv Gandhi and had run into numerous issues with him. Most famously, he had refused to give his assent to the controversial Indian Post Office (Amendment) Bill, 1986 that would have allowed the Government of India to snoop into personal mails.

Dismantling Global Hindutva: When haters chose anniversary of Islamic terror on American soil to spew venom on Hinduism

0

Napoleon supposedly said ‘Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake’. The ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ conference figured that it had been a while since Napoleon marched his army to the fateful Battle of Waterloo, and it fell upon their broad shoulders to show the world how to walk proudly towards your own annihilation. A whistling, jovial, strolling Tom (from Tom and Jerry), walking blissfully unaware as a bowling ball is about to fall on his head.

Where to begin? For one, picking the date 9/11 to hold this ‘conference’. On a side note, a children’s zoom class has more attendees (and more sensible quotes) than this conference. I suppose they were trying to play some kind of Jedi mind trick by picking this date and transferring the real threat and fears of Islamism, onto ‘Global Hindutva’. Speaking of which, it’s funny how these crackpots believe that there’s some kind of a coordinated global Hindutva movement. The first and last time Hindus around the globe solidified into a movement was in the 90s when NRIs combined powers with their brethren from the mother country to make sure Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan became a success.

The 9/11 date this year was also unfortunate for the DGH klan because their brothers-in-arm of the Taliban couldn’t wait a few more days to declare the Islamic Emirate 2.0. And despite many whitewashers from the media telling us that these comeback Talibs were new and improved, it turns out their idea of Make Afghanistan Great Again was very much like the original. The history of Islamism along with a very stark current day example put to bed any chance of gaining new converts to the Hindu hate cause. To the uninitiated, the DGH conference participants sound like they are sitting on the Titanic, complaining about the quality of the lunch buffet while the ship goes down.

Secondly, Aurangzeb fangirl ‘professors’ kept telling us that this conference was about combating Hindutva which is not equivalent to bashing Hinduism. I put professor in quotes but then again, Professor Dolores Umbridge was tenured at Hogwarts so I guess the title can apply to modern-day practitioners of the dark arts. And just like Professor Dolores hated muggles, these professors simply hate Hindus but had to keep using word salad combinations to avoid stating it plainly. Unfortunately for them, a brave soul (who apparently didn’t get the toolkit or just couldn’t stop herself when she was frothing at the mouth with hatred) named ‘Professor’ Akanksha Mehta made it clear that the fundamental issue is Hinduism itself. Other speakers also indicated clearly enough that attacking Hindutva is just the start to dismantling Hinduism itself.

Thirdly, the DGH tried to give a sheen of academic credibility by using the logos and names of colleges where these so-called professors operate. It was a nice try – slap on the name of an Ivy League college is like dumping a bottle of perfume on a box filled with poop. From far away, the box seems like a wonderful gift but when you closely examine the arguments, you end up with crap all over you.

The organizers had to quickly backtrack and remove all logos and references to the colleges and universities.

Most importantly, this conference woke up many sections of the NRI Hindu community that have been in a mental slumber when it comes to being politically, and not just culturally active as Hindus. A proverbial deer munching on the sweet grass (Dollars and Euros) while the anaconda silently wraps itself around them. This awakening would not have taken place until perhaps it was too late. The next step for the community would be to use their time, energy, money, and connections to proactively tell the Hinduism AND Hindutva story.

The organizers of the conference ended up spitting with the wind in their faces. However, the hard work of establishing the narrative begins now.

In closing, this episode also revealed the importance of giving bad faith actors space to articulate and act. Rather than trying to silence such voices, there should be attempts to roll out the red carpet and engage them on even terms versus working in the shadows.

NGO makes Ganesha Murthi hold sanitary napkins, founder was inspired to become author after watching movie based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel

An image of a Ganesha idol holding sanitary napkins installed by a Madhya Pradesh-based NGO to spread ‘awareness’ about menstrual hygiene has gone viral on social media. The post, shared by the Instagram page India Times, claimed in its caption that the NGO named Anivarya wanted to portray Lord Ganesha as a “responsible husband promoting menstrual hygiene”.

As the country celebrates the ten-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the Ganesha idol holding sanitary napkins has been installed in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow in the NGO’s office. As expected, the activism did not go down well with the netizens who reacted sharply to the alleged awareness campaign.

With around 900 comments, most social media users have criticized the NGO ‘Anivarya’ run by one Ankit Bagdi for using yet another Hindu festival for publicity and marketing.

A user named Abhishek Chauhan protested the frivolous use of Hindu deities and festivals while another user dared to use sanitary napkins as decor for other festivals.

Several users suggested that the NGO had no respect for Hindu Gods and that nothing was achieved through this campaign as it failed to convey the message.

Another user named Chinmayee asked if the so-called activists would next install Harpic (a toilet cleaner brand) and sanitizer to promote hygiene.

Some even suggested that a riot-like situation would have risen had this been done with any other religion.

One user seemingly upset with the campaign advised the NGO to rather keep the awareness drive at the grassroots level than turning it into a social media marketing stunt.

While many appreciated the thought, they simply rejected the misuse of Hindu festivals and deities.

Reportedly, the NGO has distributed 20 lakh sanitary napkins since April 2020. Ankit Bagdi, the founder of Anirvarya, is also an author who took up writing after getting inspired by the Bollywood movie ‘Two States’ based on a Chetan Bhagat novel.

This is definitely not the first time that a Hindu festival has been used to spread awareness about water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution and more. In fact, the so-called NGOs seem to be in some kind of competition to creatively insult the Hindu faith by branding it as an ‘awareness’ or ‘cause-based’ campaign.

Amit Bagdi apologises

Amit Bagdi, the founder of the NGO has apologised and said that the intention of the Ganesh Murthi was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. In a statement, he said, “We have utmost respect for Hindu religion and its beliefs. Our campaign wasn’t aimed at hurting anyone’s feelings or sentiments. On behalf of our organisation, we tender unconditional apology for inadvertently hurting sentiments of the public in general. Our volunteers have removed the objectionable items from the tableau.”

Uttar Pradesh: Man arrested in Mahoba for trying to forcibly convert Hindu neighbour to Christianity

On Saturday (September 11), the police arrested a 40-year-old man for attempting to forcibly convert his Hindu neighbour to Christianity. The incident took place in Mahoba district in the Chitrakoot Division of Uttar Pradesh.

As per reports, the accused has been identified as one Ashish John. His Hindu neighbour, Sachin Dwivedi, had informed that John had given him a drink when he complained of a ‘persistent headache.’ However, when the pain refused to subside, he told John that his drink did not work. At that point, the Christian man told Dwivedi that his ailments can go away if he converts to Christianity. Dwivedi was given several books and told that he would receive a sum of ₹12,000 to start a business, as a reward for converting to Christianity.

As per Dwivedi’s complaint, a few days later, the accused Ashish John forced the victim to accompany him to the local church. On refusing, John cursed that the headache would continue. Fed up by his consistent attempts to convert him by fear, threat and bribery, Dwivedi filed a complaint with the Panwadi police station. A case was thus registered against John under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Law Sections 3 and 5. Hindu rights organisations also held demonstrations demanding the arrest of the accused.

The accused was nabbed from the Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh following a complaint by his neighbour Sachin Dwivedi. John, a native of Ballia district, was sent to judicial custody after being produced before a local court. Reportedly, the accused had converted to Christianity 20 years ago and have tried to convert multiple people by offering them money.

5 people arrested in UP under anti-conversion law

In January this year, Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) police had lodged an FIR against five people, including two from Tamil Nadu, under the new anti-conversion law for allegedly convincing people to convert to Christianity. Quoting the complaint, the police informed that a few of them were seen convincing people to convert to Christianity with the promise of “good job and good education to children.”

The Yogi Adityanath government in UP had passed the Uttar Pradesh Vidhi Virudh Dharmantaran ordinance in November 2020 to curb the menace of forceful religious conversions in the state.

MHA suspends FCRA approval of NGO linked to The Wire and retired SC Judge heading Mamata’s Pegasus commission

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) suspended the FCRA approval of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) in June this year, Bharti Jain reported for the Times of India on Monday. Apart from the CHRI, the FCRA approvals of 8 other NGOs were suspended this year.

The CHRI counts among its members retired Justice Madan Lokur of the Supreme Court. Madan Lokur is the same person who was appointed by the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal to head the commission to investigate the alleged Pegasus snoopgate.

Madan Lokur is an executive committee member of the CHRI. The CHRI has received huge contributions from the US Department of State (American Embassy), the British High Commission in New Delhi, the High Commission of Canada among others in 2021.

The purpose for the contributions from the US was “Advocacy and Outreach Programme for Detainees in North Eastern States of India”, for the UK it was “Research on Pace of Justice issues in India and their impact on Foreign National detainees and victims of crime” and the Canadian contribution was for “Reimbursement of Expenditure”.

Apart from them, the CHRI has also received contributions from the Kaleidoscope Diversity Trust, Friedrich Naumman Stiftung – Germany, The Hanns Seidel Foundation and others.

The NGO also has links to Siddharth Varadarajan, the founding editor of The Wire. One of the initiatives of the group is the South Asia Media Defenders Network (SAMDEN). The core members of SAMDEN include Bangladesh’s Mahfuz Anam of the Daily Star, Kanak Mani Dixit of Himal in Nepal, Salil Tripathi, chair of PEN’s unit on journalists in prison, Mrinal Pande, veteran editor and author, John Zubrzycki (a Sydney-based journalist, author specialising in South Asia), Siddharth Varadarajan, Founding Editor of The Wire, and Sanjoy Hazarika, former correspondent for the New York Times.

The appointment of Lokur as the head of West Bengal’s Pegasus Commission was made a month after CHRI’s FCRA approval was suspended. The MHA has also suspended the FCRA approval of certain evangelical organisations and Islamic charities.

Bhupendra Patel takes oath as 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat

On September 13, BJP leader Bhupendra Patel took the oath as Chief Minister of Gujarat at 2 PM. Preceded by former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Patel’s name had surprised everyone as none of the media reports had included his name as an option for the CM position’s race after Rupani’s resignation on September 11.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reached Ahmedabad to participate in the swearing in ceremony of Patel. Patel’s Ghatlodiya constituency falls under the Gandhinagar constituency in the Lok Sabha which is represented by Shah. Swearing in of other ministers will take place later.

The political career of Bhupendra Patel

59-years-old Patel is an engineer by education. His political career started as a member of Memnagar Nagarpalika in 1995. He was elected as the president of the Memnagar Nagarpalika between 1999-2000. He had served as AUDA (Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority) Chairman and chairman of the Standing Committee of Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Patel was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Ghatlodiya assembly constituency in Gujarat. He had won the elections by a margin of over 1,17,000 votes against Shashikant Patel from the Congress party. The seat was previously held by UP Governor and former Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel.

Resignation of Vijay Rupani

On September 11, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, submitted his resignation from the post. “I have resigned from the post of Gujarat Chief Minister,” Vijay Rupani told the media after meeting Governor Acharya Devvrat. “I have conveyed my wishes to work in party organization under the leadership of Prime Minister and under the guidance of BJP chief,” he had said.

The reason for his resignation is not clear, but there are speculations that he could have resigned due to health issues. Some believe the resignation was necessitated by the fact that Vijay Rupani has been unwell for the past few months, making it unfeasible for him to continue as Chief Minister for another term. Thus, BJP wishes to contest the elections with a face that is familiar with the citizens of the state by the time the elections arrive, i.e. December next year. Rupani was appointed to the position on August 7, 2016, and steered the state through the Coronavirus pandemic.

Evangelical groups and Islamic charities face the axe, FCRA approval for 6 NGOs suspended: Details

Tightening the noose around evangelical organizations and Islamic charities operating in the garb of NGOs, the home ministry in the past one and a half months has suspended the foreign funding license of six such organizations.

The alleged NGOs were under the scanner for misappropriation of funds and have been suspended citing violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010. Reportedly, the NGOs were misusing the funds for religious conversions in India.

NGOs that got suspended this year

Islamic Charities

On August 27, the FCRA license of Markazul Ighasathil Kairiyathil Hindiyya, a Kerala-based NGO linked to prominent Sunni leader Sheikh Aboobacker Ahmed was cancelled over “misutilization” of funds, misrepresentation of facts and non-filing of annual FCRA returns in 2019-20.

The NGO had received over Rs 146 crores in donations from abroad in the last three years from 35 listed foreign contributors. While 28 were from the UAE, others were from Oman, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, in July the home ministry revoked the FCRA license of a Lucknow-based Al Hasan Educational and Welfare Organisation over their alleged involvement in forced religious conversions.

This is the same organization that was raided by the Uttar Pradesh ATS in connection with one Umar Gautam who is under arrest for running a conversion racket in UP and Delhi funded by Pakistan’s ISI.

Similarly, Haryana-based Mewat Trust for Educational Welfare headed by one Shafi Mohammad also had its FCRA license suspended for 180 days. Reports suggest that the reason for the same is not known.

Evangelical Organizations

On August 28, Odisha-based People’s Organisation of Empowerment of Tribals and Heavenly Grace Ministries along with Madurai-based Russ Foundation received suspension orders under FCRA.

Reportedly, Russ Foundation director M. Berlin Jose (54) and Chairperson John Prabakar (63) were arrested in 2019 after one of the directors sexually assaulted a 10-year-old inmate. The campus was sealed immediately after the incident and the Foundation had also not renewed its license to run its school.

Another organization to face the axe was Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, an NGO that is said to have received funds from George Soros’s Open Society Foundation. The organization is led by a well-known commentator on the northeast Sanjoy Hazarika.

The organization’s FCRA license was cancelled in June this year. However, the Delhi High Court had permitted the organization to utilize a part of its funds to pay the salaries of its employees in July.

Two more organizations that faced suspensions include ‘internationally recognized’ Bengaluru-based Centre for Wildlife Studies and missionary organization Holy Spirit Ministries, which operates out of Andhra Pradesh.

An NGO, Trust or organization can no longer receive foreign aid once their FCRA license has been revoked. The suspension further freezes the bank accounts of such organizations prohibiting them from utilizing the existing funds.

As per a Times of India report, there are as many as 22,708 active NGOs and other associations registered under FCRA to date.
