‘To embarrass America’ China wants to take over ex-American military airbase near Kabul in Afghanistan, says report

If reports are to be believed, China is planning to take over the abandoned US airbase in Bagram, Afghanistan. This, reports suggest will not only help Beijing build friendly relations with the newly formed Taliban led Islamist government in Afghanistan but also embarrass the United States of America.

As per reports, China is currently conducting feasibility study on sending workers for economic development program Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to Bagram. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has denied having any such plans. The military airfield is about an hour away from Kabul and was first established by the Soviets during their occupation of Afghanistan. At the height of US occupation of Afghanistan, Bagram airbase was the busiest in the world.

The Bagram airbase played an important role in US military conducting land and air operations during its ‘war on terrorism’ in Afghanistan. The said ‘war’ ended last month after US officially withdrew its troops as the Islamist group Taliban took over the country.

OpIndia had earlier reported that with US’ departure from Afghanistan, China may up its ante to include Afghanistan in its BRI program which it previously could not because of US interference. The talks have been on between the former Afghan government led by Ashraf Ghani as well as Chinese officials since a few years now.

Through a network of roads and maritime channels across 60 countries, China wants to establish its influence across the globe. Afghanistan serves as China’s gateway to Europe, Middle East, and Central Asia. Which is why, the Chinese authorities are more than eager to offer loans, build targeted infrastructure projects and set foot in the Islamic Republic.

Earlier, America’s former envoy to the UN Nikki Haley had also raised concerns that China will take over the Bagram airbase and use Pakistan to get stronger against India.

Watch: Women perform ‘naagin dance’ at political event in Andhra, meanwhile clampdown on Ganesh Chaturthi continues

The YS Jaggan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government has been receiving severe backlash for an intense clampdown on the upcoming Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The Andhra Pradesh CM has been going around raising alerts to “be prepared for the third wave” of the coronavirus pandemic. Ironically, defying all Covid appropriate protocols, the YSR Congress party had recently organized a function to welcome a Meat Corporation Chairperson.

As scores sat unmasked in close proximity, some women were seen performing a ‘Naagin dance’ to entertain the crowd post the oath-taking ceremony.

BJP leader Y Satya Kumar took to Twitter to share the rather embarrassing video of the ‘Naagin dance’ with posters of YS Reddy in the backdrop.

Satya Kumar also raised speculation of the state finance minister attending the event.

High Court upholds state decision of ban on celebrations

Toeing in line with the state government’s crackdown on the Hindu festival, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on September 8 upheld the restrictions imposed.

The Court has only given permission to install Ganesh idols on private properties, with the number of devotees performing pooja capped at five.

A petition was filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP), challenging the state government’s ban on setting up of Ganpati pandals and other curbing orders on the celebrations.

Civic officials dump Ganesh idols in garbage truck

The state government further came under fire after some civic officials in Guntur were seen dumping and transporting Ganesh idols in a garbage truck.

After the state government imposed a ban on pandals, the police had initiated action against Ganesh idol sellers selling big idols.

In a video that went viral on social media, Guntur civic officials were seen getting into a scuffle with some artisans who had put up their stalls, snatching and forcefully seizing the idols.

Several BJP workers along with other Hindu organizations had demanded strict action against the officials.

Reportedly, GMC commissioner C Anuradha has suspended the sanitary supervisor who was seen in the video transporting the idols.

Fans celebrate after Mahendra Singh Dhoni appointed mentor of Indian team for T20 world cup, sparks meme fest

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former captain of the Indian cricket team and a legend of the game, will mentor the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, honorary secretary of the BCCI Jay Shah has announced. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already retired as a player from international cricket.

The announcement has sparked a meme fest on social media. Dhoni is, after all, the only captain to have won all three ICC tournaments, the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Fans are delighted that India’s most successful captain will mark a return to the Indian dressing room. Wassim Jaffer, former batsman for the Indian test team, shared a Rajnikanth meme to celebrate the occasion.

Another fan remarked, ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’ (This heart wants more).

One football enthusiast compared the scenario to the final of the Euro 2016 Football Championship where Ronaldo egged on his teammates after he was forced out of the game by an injury. The coach of the Portugal team watched on the from the sidelines while Ronaldo, the talisman of the team, was much more vocal. Portugal went on to win the final in extra time.

ESPN joined in the celebrations as well.

A fan compared Mahendra Singh Dhoni to Bahubali.

There are Money Heist memes doing the rounds as well.

There are memes and jokes all around following the appointment.

The ICC T20 World Cup is slated for October this year. India had won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 but since then, has not managed to win the event. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had announced his retirement on Independence Day in 2020.

Apart from his international success, MS Dhoni is also one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League, leading Chennai Super Kings to eight finals of which the team managed to win the trophy on three occasions. The former captain is often fondly referred to as ‘Mahi’.

NDTV using burqa clad ladies in featured image for Nipah Virus upsets usual suspects, Islamophobia claims fly

NDTV’s report on increasing Nipah Virus cases in Kerala which featured a couple of burqa clad women has upset a certain section of Twitter.

NDTV report on nipah virus

NDTV reported that in Kerala, as many as 68 people have been put under isolation for Nipah Virus. All patients are in Kozhikode and are stable as per the report.

However, the representational image used by NDTV has upset the usual suspects, who have cried Islamophobia.

Mazher’s tweet

Twitter user Mazher Hassan demanded an answer from NDTV’s Executive Editor Vishnu Som for using women in veil in the report. The insinuation is that the women in veil, perhaps, are immune from the virus.

Faraz’s tweet

Twitter user Faraz focused only on the two women even though there are at least 14 other people in the picture.

Maqsood’s tweet

One Maqsood, who is also a politician and has contested BMC elections in Mumbai, also tagged other prominent Muslim personalities to draw their attention to NDTV and its alleged ‘Islamophobia.

Green Apple’s tweet

Twitter user Green Apple with Palestine flag in its profile picture also focused only on two burqa clad women in a picture that had over a dozen other people.

Sameer’s tweet

Twitter user Sameer even declared NDTV as ‘kuffar laetebar’ and said he was not surprised NDTV used the image for reporting on Nipah Virus.

NDTV and Islamophobia

This is not the first time NDTV has been accused of Islamophobia by the usual suspects. Earlier last month, NDTV, while sharing a story on increasing coronavirus cases, used a representational image of a man wearing skullcap who was getting tested for the same.

NDTV report on coronavirus cases

However, after the tweet was shared, NDTV was accused of Islamophobia for using a representational image of a Muslim man for getting tested for coronavirus.

NDTV hounded

However, soon the ‘liberals’ were offended at the representational image and bullied NDTV into deleting the tweet and changing the featured image.

India has over 20 crore Muslims, which is about 15% of India’s total population. Considering the coronavirus pandemic affected every individual equally irrespective of religion and caste, a representational should have not drawn such an ire. However, in the ‘secular’ India, a Muslim occultist accused of rape can have a Hindu sadhu’s image as ‘representational image’, but such factual representation is a no-go zone.

FIR registered against Rana Ayyub alleging money laundering, cheating and other charges related to her fundraising campaigns

An FIR has been registered against controversial journalist Rana Ayyub over money laundering and fraud related to her fundraising campaign. The FIR was filed on 7th September at Indrapuram police station in Ghaziabad in UP in response to a complaint filed by Vikas Sakrityayan of the Hindu IT cell.

The complaint accuses Rana Ayyub of Money Laundering, Cheating, Dishonest Misappropriation of Property, Criminal Breach of Trust by illegally acquiring money from the general public in the name of charity. It says that Rana Ayyub happens to be a journalist by profession and was receiving foreign money without any kind of approval certificate/registration from the government, which is required as per the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010. Hence, she liable is also liable for violating the provisions of FCRA, the complaint had stated.

Based on this complaint, the FIR has been registered under sections 403, 406, 418, 420 or the Indian Penal Code (IPC), section 66D of the IT Act and section 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The case relates to three fundraising campaigns Rana Ayyub had conducted on Ketto, Funds for slum dwellers and farmers, Relief work for Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra, and Help for Covid-19 impacted people in India. However, doubts were raised on the campaigns since the beginning, as the journalist was accepting foreign donations without the mandatory FCRA approval.

Last month, Ketto had informed the donors of the campaigns that the fundraisings by Rana Ayyub were under the scanner of probe agencies, and a large amount of money still remained unspent, which meant it didn’t reach the intended beneficiaries.

According to the platform, Rana Ayyub had informed them that she had received around ₹2.69 crore in the campaigns, which included ₹1.90 crore from Indian donors and $1.09 lakh in foreign donations. Out of the total ₹2.69 crore collected, she has spent on around ₹1.25 crore, and she is yet to pay ₹90 lakh from the fund as taxes. This means, around ₹1.44 crore is still lying in the accounts. Out of this, ₹90 lakh is tax liability, while the rest ₹54 lakh never reached the intended beneficiaries.

Rana Ayyub had ended her Covid-19 fundraiser for relief work after potential illegality of it was exposed. She had also claimed that she is returning the foreign donations. But the Ketto’s statement last month showed that she had not refunded any such donations from foreign countries.

Battle-line drawn between BJP and Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur after Congress withdraws from the race

0

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday formally announced that she will contest Bhabanipur assembly by-election as the candidate of the Trinamool Congress. The Trinamool Congress had on Sunday officially announced her candidature for Bhabanipur which is home borough of Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee has to win the by-election to retain her position as CM as she had the Nandigram constituency to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari during the assembly polls.

Bhabanipur is a cosmopolitan space within Kolkata where around 40 % of the population is Marwaris, Gujaratis, Punjabis and other non-Bengali communities.

Bhabanipur along with two other constituencies namely Jangipur and Samserganj of West Bengal will go for poll on September 30.  Counting of the votes will be held on October 3, as per the notification of the Election Commission of India. Bhabanipur seat was vacated by West Bengal Agriculture Minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in May for Mamata Banerjee to contest.

With this announcement, she also started election campaigning against her chief rival; the BJP which had thrown a very tough fight during the recently held eight-phase assembly elections in Bengal.

In this by-election, the BJP will be her chief rival as the Bengal unit of the BJP had sent six names to central leadership to pick any of them as candidate against the chief minister including former governor Tathagata Roy, Priyanka Tibrewal and Biswajit Sarkar. Sarkar is the brother of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar who was allegedly murdered by Trinamool Congress workers in Kolkata on May 2.

Mamata Banerjee had accused the BJP and the Narendra Modi government for using central agencies to target leaders of the Trinamool Congress. Nevertheless, the Bengal government and her party have been facing probes over allegations of post-poll violence including rape and murder. The CBI is investigating these cases under judicial supervision on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

In the assembly election she retained Bengal for the third consecutive term but this time she lost the Nandigram seat to her BJP rival Suvendu Adhikari. She took oath as chief minister of Bengal after the election but it was very much required for her to get elected within six months after taking oath as per rules.

Now it seems that the BJP; the principal opposition party in Bengal assembly, will be the only challenger to this fresh bid of Mamata Banerjee

The Congress party has withdrawn from the fray even if very recently the Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said that his party will contest Bhabanipur. The party has announced that it will not field any candidate against Mamata Banerjee. Earlier on Monday, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said that the Congress would field a candidate against Banerjee in Bhabanipur. However, on Tuesday he said that the AICC has decided not to field any candidate opposite Banerjee for the September 30 bypoll.

The Congress which has been completely washed away in Bengal doesn’t want to annoy Mamata Banerjee so that the party can piggyback on Mamata Banerjee in the 2024 parliamentary election.

Cabinet approves purchase of 56 C-295MW military transport aircraft from Airbus for IAF, 40 of them to be made in India

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Wednesday approved the purchase of 56 C-295MW military transport aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space in Spain for the Indian Air Force. Of the 56 aircraft, 16 will be purchased in flyway condition from Spain, while the rest 40 will be manufactured in India under the Make in India initiative by a consortium led by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in collaboration with Airbus.

C-295MW aircraft is a twin-turboprop transport aircraft of 5-10 Tonne capacity with contemporary technology that will replace the ageing Avro aircraft of IAF. The aircraft has a rear ramp door for quick reaction and para dropping of troops and cargo. IAF currently operates 57 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 aircraft, originally designed by British company Avro and manufactured by HAL under licence in India, which are being retired.

HAL had offered to upgrade the HS 748 Avro fleet to modernise it, but the IAF had rejected the proposal. The lack of a rear ramp door in the Avro aircraft means that it can’t be used to transport military equipment for logistical support, and has largely been used for troop and VVIP movement.

According to a statement issued by the ministry of defence, 16 aircraft will be delivered in flyaway condition from Spain within 48 months of signing of the contract, and the rest 48 aircraft will be manufactured in India by TATA Consortium within ten years of signing of the contract.

This is the first project of its kind in which a military aircraft will be manufactured in India by a private company. All 56 aircraft will be installed with the indigenous Electronic Warfare Suite. The project will give a boost to the aerospace ecosystem in India wherein several MSMEs spread over the country will be involved in the manufacturing of parts of the aircraft, said the ministry.

The deal is reported to be worth around $2.5 billion, which will be signed among the Indian Air Force, Airbus and the Tata consortium. This deal marks the end of the monopoly of state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in the defence aircraft sector. The Tata group company already has joint ventures with global defence majors like Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Sikorsky etc for manufacturing crucial parts for defence aircraft.

The programme will provide a major boost to the `Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ of the Government as it offers a unique opportunity for the Indian Private Sector to enter into a technology-intensive and highly competitive aviation Industry. The project will augment domestic aviation manufacturing resulting in reduced import dependence and an expected increase in exports.

According to the ministry, a large number of parts, sub-assemblies and major component assemblies of aerostructure are scheduled to be manufactured in India. The programme will act as a catalyst in employment generation in the aerospace ecosystem of the country and is expected to generate 600 highly skilled jobs directly, over 3000 indirect jobs and an additional 3000 medium skill employment opportunities.

Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti bat for Taliban, say they hope Taliban will run govt as per Islamic sharia laws

As the Taliban has formed an interim government in Afghanistan ahead of constituting a final government, National Congress Chief Farooq Abdullah, NC leader Omar Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti talked in favour of the Taliban. In separate statements, the three leaders batted for the Jihadi regime in Afghanistan and ‘hoped’ the Talibs would be able to ‘change the perspective of the world’ towards them.

Senior Abdullah believes that the Taliban translates to good governance. He said, “Afghanistan is a separate country. Now those who have come to power need to run the government. I hope that they will do justice to everyone and run a good government in which they will respect human rights and run the government in accordance with Islamic laws. I would like to add that they should try to maintain friendly relationships with all nations.”

Amit Malviya, BJP IT cell head, objected to the comments and said, “Abdullah should realize that comment on international relations and to comment on affairs of other countries is not the job of a former chief minister. It is the job of the Ministry of External Affairs,” and urged him to restrain from making any such comments.

Omar Abdullah had recently slammed the government for holding talks with the Taliban to facilitate the evacuation of Indians from Afghanistan. “You cannot have different yardsticks for different organizations. If they are a terror organization, why are you talking to them? If they are not a terrorist organization, why are you banning their bank accounts? Why are you not recognizing their government? Make up your mind what it is. I am not the decision-maker.” He urged the Modi government to move to the UN to end the Taliban’s blacklisting if the government does not consider them terrorists.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti had earlier threatened the government of India using the Taliban’s name. She had said that the Taliban forced a superpower like the US to leave Afghanistan and demanded the Indian government to hold talks like Vajpayee did.

On September 8, she rooted for the Taliban government in Afghanistan and said, “Taliban is emerging as a reality. They should work on their image of anti-human rights, and if they want to run the government in Afghanistan, they should run it according to the real Sharia according to Quran Shareef, in which women and children have rights. If they follow the real Sharia, they can become an example for the world. Only then they would do business with them.” She further added if they ran the government according to the way they did in the 1990s, it would not be a good sign for Afghanistan and the rest of the world.

Taliban announced first interim cabinet

Recently, the Taliban has announced its first interim cabinet that would start functioning from September 11, 2021. Hasan Akhund has been named as the Prime Minister, while Sirajuddin Haqqani has been appointed as the internal minister in the 33-member cabinet. Both PM and Internal Minister have been designated as terrorists by the UN.

The Secret War: How a 2012 documentary revealed Pakistan was supporting Taliban and American soldiers knew it

A documentary released in 2012, almost a decade before the fall of Kabul to resurgent Taliban, shed light on the double-dealing of the entities that identified themselves as the allies of the United States but were covertly working to undermine its mission in Afghanistan. Titles ‘The Secret War’, it details how the United States was fighting a losing battle in Afghanistan all these years.

Following the twin tower attacks in September 2001, the United States had invaded Afghanistan and toppled the then Taliban regime from power, in a bid to locate Osama Bin Laden and obliterate the terror network of his organisation, Al Qaeda. Almost 10 years later, Osama Bin Laden was killed in a secret operation carried out by the Special US Forces after his location was traced to a nondescript compound in the backwater town of Abbottabad, Pakistan.

While many imagined that the US would soon end its war in Afghanistan, especially after the elimination of Osama Bin Laden, the American forces on the ground knew the war was far from being over. Against this background, journalists Martin Smith and Stephen Grey of the Frontline visited Pakistan in 2011 to understand the dynamics that were at play in America’s war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The documentary, titled ‘The Secret War’, which was released later, was a culmination of the six-month investigation carried out by Smith and Stephen Grey and provided a window into interminably long-drawn-out war the United States had waged against Islamic terror outfits such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

US soldiers were unhappy about Pakistan’s support to Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists

During the investigation, Smith and Grey found that the American soldiers stationed along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border were unhappy with the latter, for their covert support to the insurgency and terrorism targeted against the United States. One of the US troops, who wished to remain anonymous, confided to the reporters that the ground soldiers manning the border reportedly complained to the seniors about the Pakistani complicity in helping the Talibani and Al Qaeda terrorists cross the border and infiltrate into Afghanistan.

“It could be turning a blind eye as the insurgents launched rockets from Pakistan to the US bases located across the border. It could also be allowing passage to the terrorists, right under their noses, to safely cross the border into Afghanistan. It could be providing insurgents with vital information such as details of our patrol or the Afghan army’s patrol along the border. It was complicity on their part, said Maj Michael Waltz, US Army Forces Reserves, while speaking about Pakistan’s treachery in propping up Al Qaeda and the Taliban terrorists against the United States.

The documentary showed that the Taliban leaders, who had fled Afghanistan in the aftermath of the US invasion, moved freely inside Pakistan. The two journalists met a Taliban commander in the outskirts of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The commander told them how dependent the Taliban was for a sanctuary in Pakistan to continue their war across the border.

“Across the border, our life is very difficult now. But the Pakistanis are helping us,” the Taliban commander told the Frontline scribes. “Pakistan is our nation. They are our people. They help us and support us. They are on our side. Our war is in Afghanistan, and our operations are continuing. But it is not necessary to endanger our lives and live there.”

Pakistan claimed to support the USA, but provided help to its enemies openly

New Yorker journalist Dexter Filkins had called Pakistan a duplicitous country, one that claims to be an ally of the United States but is also known for extending support to the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and even to the Haqqani network, one of the deadliest terror organisations operating in Afghanistan.

Amrullah Saleh, the former vice president of Afghanistan, was also interviewed as a part of the documentary to probe Pakistan’s role in supporting the Taliban. Saleh had then concurred with the intelligence assessment that the resilience of the Taliban and its ally, Haqqani Network, in mounting attacks against the US forces in Afghanistan could be attributed to the support they receive from Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.

“ISI knows that they are operating from Pakistani soil to undermine America’s objectives in the region and the ISI is happy that they are doing it because through them(Haqqani network and the Taliban), Pakistan promotes their policy in Afghanistan,” said Saleh, who worked as the Afghan Intelligence Head from 2004 to 2010 before taking a plunge into politics.

Pakistan helped the Taliban in their offensive in Panjshir valley: Reports

Nine years after the documentary was released accusing Pakistan of being in cahoots with the Taliban, Islamabad helped the terror outfit in their fight against the resistance movement led by Ahmad Massoud and Amrullah Saleh in the Panjshir Valley.

The last bastion of resistance forces in Afghanistan- Panjshir came under heavy fire on Sunday, September 6. The former Samangan MP Zia Arianjad in a quote to Aamaj News informed that the province was bombed by Pakistani Air Force drones.

Even now, the ministers and officials of Pakistan are seen openly flaunting their support and help to the Taliban. ISI chief Faiz Hameed had flown to Kabul to meet Taliban leaders just days before the attack on Panjshir.

Several news agencies reported that the Taliban got help from the Pakistani army in their fight against the resistance forces. According to sources close to the resistance forces, Pakistan provided air support to the Taliban in their campaign to lay control of the Panjshir Valley. It is reported to have airdropped special forces to fight along with the Taliban against the resistance forces.

Assam: Ferry sinks in Brahmaputra River after colliding with another boat near Majuli, more than 50 feared missing

0

In a horrific incident, one ferry sank in the Brahmaputra River in Assam after it collided with another ferry near the banks of Majuli Island. The capsized ferry, named Maa Kamala, had approximately 120 passengers on it, and several among them are missing. The passenger boat was moving from Nimati Ghat near Jorhat to Kamalabari in Majuli, where it collided with a goods carrier vessel and sank soon after.

According to reports, around 60 to 65 people are missing and are feared to be drowned. According to eyewitnesses, the ferry Maa Kamala was around 100 meters away from reaching the bank at Kamalabari in Majuli when it collided with the other ferry travelling in the opposition. The boat turned over after that, and some passengers managed to climb onto the body of the vessel, who were saved by other boats present at the ghat.

All the people travelling in the other boat have been rescued, as the vessel remained on water and was immediately anchored to the port.

A video of the incident has emerged on social media, showing people climbing onto the outer hull of the vessel even it turns upside down. They were rescued by another boat that had reached the spot to help them.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have already reached the spot and started rescue operations. It is estimated that around 30-35 people have been rescued so far, by both locals and rescue teams. The rescued persons include a 2 months old kid, who was saved.

As the incident happened in the evening, the rescue operations have become difficult due to darkness.

The sank ferry was also carrying 4 cars and more than 20 two-wheelers, all of which are under water now. The capsized boat has been located by the divers, while the other vessel has already been pulled to the river bank.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that he is “pained at the tragic boat accident near Nimati Ghat, Jorhat.” He informed that he has informed Majuli and Jorhat administration to undertake rescue work, and also asked minister Bimal Borah to rush to the site.

Former Assam CM and union Ayush and Shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who had represented Majuli assembly constituency, also tweeted that he is anguished to learn of the incident. He informed that he has directed the union shipping ministry to provide all necessary support to help the victims.

Due to heavy rainfall in the last several days, the water of the Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger level at various places, including Majuli.
