BJP’s plea seeking floor test in Madhya Pradesh Assembly gets nod from Supreme Court, petition to be heard on March 17

The Supreme Court of India will hear the petition filed by the BJP seeking a floor test in the Madhya Pradesh State Assembly on March 17.

Accusing the Kamal Nath-led-government of avoiding the trust vote, former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Madhya Pradesh govt has lost its majority, that is why they are running away from it, we will ask govt to bring a confidence motion. Chief Minister has said he wants a floor test, then why is he not doing it? Our only demand is a floor test.”

He added, “The Chief Minister is running away from the trust vote as he knows that the government lacks a majority. BJP has the majority and we have appealed the Governor to order floor test at the earliest. He has assured us to protect our constitutional rights.” BJP MLAs were also paraded before the Governor, Lalji Tandon.

On Sunday, Kamal Nath said, “I have told Governor that I am ready for the floor test and the MLAs who have been held captive should be released. I will speak to the Speaker about the floor test,” he said. In a letter to the Governor, he alleged that on March 10, BJP leaders reached the Speaker’s residence to hand over the resignation letter of the rebel MLAs. “None of the 19 MLAs was present to tender resignation at the speaker’s residence,” the letter alleged.

Earlier today, the Governor had addressed the assembly and stated, “All must follow the rules under the Constitution so that dignity of Madhya Pradesh remains protected.”

The political drama in Madhya Pradesh has come to an abrupt anti-climax as the assembly session has been adjourned for ten days till March 26 in the wake of the Coronavirus scare. The floor test that was scheduled today by Governor Lalji Tandon has been postponed for now too. The BJP was thus forced to reach out to the Supreme Court.

Enforcement Directorate summons Anil Ambani who had borrowed ₹14,000 crores from Yes Bank

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Reliance Group Chairman, Anil Ambani, on March 16 as a part of its probe into the charges of money laundering against Rana Kapoor, the founder of Yes Bank that is reeling under a state of crisis. Ambani is one of the largest borrowers of the bank with an exposure of ₹14,000 crores.

An official from the Enforcement Directorate informed that the investigative agency is drafting a list of top borrowers of Yes Bank and the large yet risky credit facilities extended during the tenure of Rana Kapoor. He added, “The management and promoters will be examined and questioned in the coming weeks.”

The ED had sought information regarding terms and conditions, side agreements of the loans disbursed by Yes Bank to Anil Ambani for his construction company. He is yet to reply to the email sent by the Enforcement Directorate. On March 6, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the Reliance Group, Vodafone Idea, DHFL, IL&FS, Essel Group and CG Power were some of the major defaulters of the stressed Yes Bank.

It is reported that Anil Ambani has cited some health issue and may be issued a later date.

Last week, Ambani’s firm stated, “Reliance Group states it has NIL direct or indirect exposure to Rana Kapoor, Former CEO of YES Bank, or his wife or daughters, or any entities controlled by Rana Kapoor or his family. Reliance Group says its entire exposure to Yes Bank is fully secured and transacted in the ordinary course of business. Reliance Group is committed to honour repayments of all its borrowings from Yes Bank Ltd through its various asset monetisation programmes which are all at advanced stages.”

The Central Bureau of Investigation has booked Yes Bank Founder Rana Kapoor and his wife Bindhu Kapoor for receiving ₹307 crore bribe from Avantha Realty Ltd. in connection to the purchase of a 1.2-acre uber-luxe bungalow at 40, Amrita Shergill Marg, New Delhi that was valued at ₹550 crores. Yes Bank is accused of not initiating actions to recover ₹1900 crores from the Avantha Group, despite the group of companies defaulting on its payment.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate was investigating whether a dummy company controlled by Kapoor and two of his daughters, Doit Urban Ventures, received kickbacks to the tune of ₹600 crores in return for granting a ₹4,450 crore loan to Dewan Housing Financial Corporation Limited (DHFL).

Coronavirus: Delhi government clamps down on large gatherings, Shaheen Bagh ‘protests’ may end

0

In the wake of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday invoked the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 and declared a new set of bans to limit the spread of the highly contagious disease.

In the press release, the AAP supremo announced a complete ban on social, religious and political gatherings of more than 50 people in the national capital. The ban, effective immediately, will also be applicable on Shaheen Bagh ‘protest’ site where Muslim women have been sitting on a ‘protest’ against the amended Citizenship Law for the past three months now.

The directions issued by the Delhi government on Coronavirus spread

Disregarding the government appeal to avoid large gatherings and crowded places, the Shaheen Bagh protestors have been recklessly continuing with their demonstration. They have apparently been praying and reading the Quran at the protest site, believing that praying to Allah would safeguard them from the coronavirus crisis.

“We have already shut schools, colleges, swimming pools so far. Today, it has been decided to order gyms, night clubs and spas also to close as a precautionary measure,” Kejriwal said while addressing a media briefing after a review of the steps taken by the city government to prevent community transmission of the infection.

“All religious, social, cultural gatherings with more than 50 people have been banned,” said Arvind Kejriwal. The ban would not apply to weddings, said the Chief Minister, asking people to avoid them voluntarily.

Arvind Kejriwal underscored that precautionary measures, especially regular washing of hands, using sanitisers could help deal with the deadly disease, furthering that mobile washbasins with soap would be installed at various places in the city.

“Five hundred beds that have been kept aside in case there is a need for hospitalisation at a large scale,” Kejriwal said, furthering that the administration was prepared for an eventuality where a larger number of people may be infected as a precautionary measure.

The national capital has reported seven confirmed coronavirus cases so far. As of now, India has 112 confirmed cases of COVID-19 coronavirus and two people have as of now died with the infection.

Fighting the curve: Seven days to save India

Yesterday, Italy reported 368 deaths from the Wuhan Corona virus pandemic. The day before, it was 250 deaths. The crisis of a generation is unfolding before our very eyes. The horror of exponential growth is beginning to sink in.

When you look at how the numbers exploded in China, Italy, France, the US and Iran, it is easy to get a sinking feeling that the world is coming to an end. However, in fighting this crisis, numbers and data will play almost as big a role as healthcare services. The cases are bound to go up every single day. But by how much and how fast? It is only these numbers that can tell us if we are winning.

This very informative graphic from the Times of India tells us the story of how other countries have fared so far.

Untitled
How countries have fared on coronavirus (image: TimesofIndia)

In China and Korea, the number of cases were initially growing at a terrifying rate of doubling every day. At this rate, it would have engulfed those countries in no time. Since then, with intensive lockdowns and social distancing, the curves have flattened out. European countries like Spain, France, Germany and Italy are stuck in the same zone, with cases doubling every 2-3 days.

So while it may appear that Italy is ‘worst affected,’ the truth is that France, Germany and Spain are doing just as badly. Italy just happens to be further along the curve than these countries are.

What really matters here is not the total number of cases, but the slope of this curve. You can see that Japan seems to have done a much better job, with cases doubling every week. In Hong Kong, they have performed very admirably, where it might take a whole month for the number of cases to double.

So where is India? By Sunday night we had 110 cases, up by 10% from 100 the night before. This Wikipedia graphic seems particularly helpful.

COVID-19 cases in India
COVID-19 cases in India (image: Wikipedia)

Every digit in this graphic matters. Say 111 cases may not feel like it is a lot more than 110 cases. But the fact is that 111 represents a growth of 11% over the previous day, whereas 110 represents growth of 10%. When dealing with exponential growth, every little bit counts. If the number of cases yesterday had been 115, that would have been 15% growth. Although that’s just 5 more than 110, think about, say, the difference between an interest rate of 10% and an interest rate of 15%. The cumulative effect is enormous.

The number of cases in India has roughly doubled in 1 week, which suggests we are closer to the path of Japan.

Let us consider the most terrifying question first. Is it going to get as bad as Italy or USA?

Untitled
COVID-19 cases in Italy

You can see that once the case number reached 80 or so, it began to explode. And since then, it has been growing daily at rates well over 20%. From 80, it jumped straight to 150 the next day and 227 the next.

In India’s case, we were at 77 on March 12. We were at 110 by the end of March 15. And you can see at a glance that our daily growth rates are well below 20%. That’s a huge difference.

The picture from the US is even more heartbreaking.

Untitled

Though the US has a lot fewer cases than Italy, the situation of the former is actually much more grim. The daily growth rate is breaking 30% fairly regularly, with several above 40%! This looks like apocalypse. No doubt about it.

India went from 77 to 110 in 3 days. The US went from 85 to 252 in 3 days. Significant difference.

There are some obvious questions people might ask here about India. Are we testing enough people? Perhaps our case numbers are also growing at those terrifying rates and we just don’t know?

Well, not very likely for at least two reasons:

(1) When case numbers were around 80-100 in either US or Italy, those countries were pretty chilled out about the disaster, hardly testing anyone. They were caught napping. If anything, we are probably testing people much more than they were back when they were at our level.

(2) It makes very little sense to consider number of tests per unit of population. A virus does not spread evenly. It starts with incoming foreign travelers  and radiates out of a center. As long as we can trace those rays efficiently and test the people who come in contact, we are doing fine. The rest of the population barely matters. The total international air traffic to India would be much less than the US. That’s what we need to look at.

Let us take one more look, this time at Brazil, a country where the number of cases has not piled into the thousands yet.

Untitled

On March 11, India and Brazil had almost the same number of cases (~70). On March 14, Brazil reached 180 and India 100. See how quickly the gap has opened up.

It is of course way too early to celebrate. There is no room for complacency. But remember that an exponential curve is extremely unforgiving and differences in growth rates will show up very quickly. This is one instance in which early numbers can be taken quite seriously.

So there is grounds for cautious optimism. As of this moment. We do not know for sure what tomorrow will bring. Or even the next hour. Everything could fall apart any second.

The next seven days are crucial. And each one of us is a soldier in this fight.

Bear in mind that we do not even know what it means to “survive” the crisis. For now, we can close our borders, halt our economy. But the US and the continent of Europe are being ravaged by the virus right now with no end in sight. We cannot keep everything closed permanently. If 60-70% of the US or Europe get the virus, what do we do? Permanently shut off all contact with them? Nobody knows.

It is at times like these that you understand the full meaning of the ancient Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times.

Bizarre coronavirus remedies: Western televangelists make outlandish claims to cure Covid-19

From the United States to China, countries across the globe are in throes of the insidious coronavirus, with the number of cases growing exponentially and more than 5000 already perished worldwide due to the pernicious virus. Public health system across the world has been under considerable strain as the countries continue to wrangle with an unprecedented catastrophe.

However, despite the enormity of the crisis befalling the world, some western quacks seem to be exploiting the global trepidation as they palm off bizarre and outlandish remedies as reliable cures for the contagion that is rapidly spreading its ugly and venomous claws. Banking on the public anxiety, the western televangelists are advocating unfounded measures as a treatment for the novel coronavirus.

Here are some of the charlatans who are riding on the coronavirus scare and selling snake oil to the unsuspecting people in this hour of global crisis:

American televangelist Kenneth Copeland claims to cure people of coronavirus from the TV studio

Days before Donald Trump administration announced a national emergency in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a video of American televangelist Kenneth Copeland claiming to cure the coronavirus victims remotely from his TV studio had gone viral. Copeland made the preposterous assertion on ‘Victory’ channel during a programme “Standing Against Coronavirus” in which he was seen asking his viewers to touch the television screen in order to receive the divine treatment.

Televangelist Jim Bakker endorses a mysterious silver solution as a panacea for coronavirus

In the show The Jim Bakker Show, the televangelist was seen endorsing the mitigating effects of a mysterious silver solution to cure the coronavirus contagion. Even as the scientists across the world are struggling to create an antidote for the virus, Bakker got a so-called ‘health expert’ on his show to promote the silver solution who fallaciously claimed that the solution was capable of ‘completely killing” the strains of coronavirus.

However, Bakker was served with a lawsuit by the Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt for misrepresentations about the effectiveness of ‘Silver Solution’ as a treatment for 2019 novel coronavirus.

American Radio host Alex Jones peddles toothpaste that he falsely claims to kill the coronavirus

Jones is accused of misleading his listeners with mistruths and dangerous lies about the treatment of coronavirus. On his Infowars program, Jones told his listeners that the silver-infused Superblue toothpaste being sold on his website has been verified by federal officials as stuff that kills the whole SARS-corona family at ‘point-blank range’, despite the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claiming otherwise.

Conservative Christian pastor claims only “sissies” and “pansies” wash their hands to prevent coronavirus

An orthodox pastor, Jonathan Shuttlesworth, a televangelist who co-founded Revival Today TV, strongly reprimanded churches who have suggested measures to prevent coronavirus and called them “sissies” and “pansies” who have been “neutered”. He contended that those who use hand sanitiser have “fake faith” and “no balls”.

Online healers charging £4 to £80 in Europe with the bogus claims of curing the coronavirus

A rampant online market for the sale of unfounded coronavirus solution is flourishing in Europe and USA as countries across the world are on a red alert to fight the novel virus. Fraudulent sellers are fleecing fraught consumers who are seeking medication for the virus online. Sellers on Fiverr assert that their methods such as ‘healing energy’, ‘bio magic principles’ and ‘Islamic method’ are able to cure the virus and are charging anywhere between £4 to £80 for the outlandish services.

Jammu and Kashmir: Within days of lifting social media curb, Hizbul Mujahideen releases audio, says Kashmiris do not need roads and water

Two days before the Jammu and Kashmir administration is to evaluate the unrestricted social media access in the valley, Pakistan backed terror organisation Hizbul Mujahideen released its first audio clip, since Indian government repealed Article 370 in the valley, on March 14 (Saturday). This is also the first since authorities lifted restrictions on social media use for mobile users in the valley on March 4.

In the 16-minute audio clip, Hizbul Chief Commander Riyaz Naikoo is heard motivating its cadres and saying that the abrogation of Article 370 will have no impact in their fight against Indian security forces and that his organisation will continue to target Indian paramilitary forces and Army personnel.

In this clip, the Hizbul chief commander makes direct references to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and asks people of Jammu and Kashmir not to back PM Modi’s development policies for Kashmir. “Roads, water, social media are not our goals… India wants to change its demography using different tricks such as Article 370 and social media ban. It’s forcing Pakistan and Kashmir to pick up arms. But we will still fight”, said the Riyaz Naikoo, one of the top 10 terrorists wanted by the Indian security forces.

It is pertinent to note here that ever since the Indian government has gone ahead to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistan PM Imran Khan has multiple times gone on a headless rant against India. Though being shunned globally and also admitting to his failure in selling his bootless agenda to the world, Imran Khan refused to forego. In his desperation, Khan has also threatened India of another Pulwama like attack.

Pulwama attack was schemed by Pakistan based Jaish-e-Muhammad terror organisation. In a dastardly attack, a JeM terrorist had killed 40 soldiers. After the attack, JeM released a video in which the attacker was seen spewing hatred for Hindus. After Pulwama attack, Indian Air Force avenged the deaths of the Indian Bravehearts by conducting airstrikes deep inside Pakistan, in Balakot, killing about 200-300 JeM terrorists.

Meanwhile, in the audio clip, Naikoo went on to cite an example of recently released former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah besides also mentioning Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. The Hizbul chief commander stated that the Indian government did “use and throw” these politicians.

He furthered that the world is watching the developments in Kashmir and that the Indian forces will have to leave Kashmir like how the US exited Afghanistan.

This audio came two days before the Jammu and Kashmir authorities are to evaluate the use or misuse of social media in the valley. The authorities had while restoring social media access on March 4, set a deadline to evaluate the practicality of restoring the services on March 17. Tomorrow it will be decided whether the ban on social media will be revoked or access will continue after March 17.

On February 13, Jammu and Kashmir administration had suspended mobile internet services to prevent rumours about the health of Pakistan-sponsored separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Some social media posts had falsely claimed the health of the 90-year-old Geelani deteriorated. On February 17, Kashmir Cyber Police had registered an FIR on the misuse of social media in the valley.

Reacting to the video, security authorities said there is not much impact of the audio. But also said that if the problem persists with the use of social media by terror ranks, security review will require a shutdown.

Responding to Hizbul Chief Commander Riyaz Naikoo’s threats, IG Kashmir said: “We have given Naikoo a reply in the form of Anantnag where four top terrorists of both Hizbul and Lashkar have been eliminated today”.

The Hizbul Chief Commander Riyaz Naikoo is an A++ category of terrorist from Pulwama and amongst the top 10 terrorists wanted by the Indian security forces. He is wanted for the killing and kidnapping of over a dozen civilians, police and special police officers between 2012 and 2020.

#IndiaFightsCorona: PM Modi takes to Twitter to share how Indians are doing their bit to fight the pandemic

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took to Twitter to share how Indians are taking small steps in their everyday lives to combat the deadly virus and contain the spreading of highly contagious virus.

PM Modi also hailed the healthcare workers who are risking their lives to help the world fight the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Appreciating small steps by people like cancelling meetings, avoiding public gatherings and restricting travels, PM Modi said these things will help containing the spread of virus.

PM Modi highlighted how the healthcare workers and authorities are not only trying to keep pace but even trying to go one step ahead to help containing the infections.

PM Modi added how it is a collective duty of all citizens to ensure that the spread of coronavirus is contained.

As of now, India has 112 confirmed cases of COVID-19 coronavirus and two people have as of now died with the infection. India’s state and central governments have been taking proactive steps to ensure the spread of infections is contained. Most states have suspended schools and colleges till 31st March. Other places like gyms, spas, cinema halls where infection is likely to spread are also shut down in many states. Public gatherings are also discouraged.

Watch: Jawaharlal Nehru’s interview where he says all Muslims in India are descendants of Hindus

The first Prime Minister of independent India Jawaharlal Nehru believed that all Indian Muslims are descendants of Hindus. In his last television interview in May 1964, Nehru spoke about religious minority and religion-based partition of India in 1947.

In a video uploaded by Indian broadcaster Prasar Bharati on its YouTube channel, Nehru can be heard saying how some minority were afraid of India becoming free and they ‘remaining a minority’. At around 14 minutes into the video, Nehru says, “They didn’t like the idea at all.”

When American TV host Arnold Michaelis asks Nehru about involvement of Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and himself in the freedom movement, Nehru says categorically that Jinnah was not involved in the freedom struggle. “In fact, he opposed it. The Muslim League was started by 1911 and it was started really by the British, encouraged by them so as to create factions. And ultimately that came to partition.”

Nehru further states and Mahatma Gandhi was not in favour of the partition and neither was he. “But ultimately I decided like others did. It is better to have partition than this constant trouble. You see, the leaders of the Muslim League were big landlords who did not like land reform. We were very anxious to have land reforms, which we did have afterwards. That is the reason we agreed for partition,” Nehru said. He added that the Muslim League would have continued to create troubles and opposed other reforms the new government would’ve have taken and hence decided to go ahead with the partition.

Speaking about fraternal living with the Muslims in India, Nehru said, “Many hundreds of years and there was fraternal living. It was a religious concept more than anything. The Hindus were not and are not a ‘progenitising’ race. They didn’t care very much but the other party did. But Muslims were keen on ‘progenitising’ and getting converts. In fact, all the Muslims in India are descendants of Hindus. Only handful came from outside.”

When probed if the Muslims succeeded in ‘progenitising’, Nehru said, “Well, they did. Only to small extent. About less than a quarter of people after hundreds of years.” He further says that India at that time had the third largest Muslim population.

Disappointed with life in Afghanistan: Two ISIS jihadi women from Kerala say they want to return to India ‘provided there is no jail sentence’

Two Islamic State brides, Nimisha alias Fathima and Sonia alias Ayesha who had fled from Kerala to Afghanistan in 2016 to join ISIS have expressed their desire to return to India, reported The New Indian Express. They informed that their husbands have been killed.

Sonia said that she was “disappointed” with her life in Afghanistan and wanted to return to her husband’s family. Nimisha said that she would like to meet her mother Bindu Sampath, provided she was not arrested.

Last year, around 900 terrorists of the ISIS had surrendered to Afghan security forces. 10 of them hailed from India (mostly Kerala). Several terrorists from Kerala have travelled to Afghanistan since 2016. Many of them took their families along with them.

Reportedly, the terrorists fighting for the Islamic State had surrendered in the Eastern province of Nangarhar, where the Afghan national security forces were conducting operations against the ISIS. The operations started on the 12th of November against the terror outfit. 93 terrorists, that included several Pakistanis, had surrendered only hours after Afghanistan’s offensive against the terror outfit began on the 12th of November.

Sonia Sebastian who hailed from Eranakulam, Kerala converted to Islam during her college days and changed her name to Ayesha. She married Abdul Rashid, the ring leader of Kasargod IS module.

Nimisha, a Dental student who hailed from Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, had married a Christian youth named Bexin from Palakkad without informing her mother Bindu Sampath. Later, the couple had converted to Islam and are believed to have been radicalised by radical Islamist elements in Kerala who were working as recruiters for ISIS.

Nimisha, a 23-year-old formerly Hindu girl was among the 21 people from Kerala who had left the state and went to join ISIS. It was the news of ISIS joining that had stirred up media interest and police action in the cases of forced conversion.

In 2016, a computer engineer Abdul Rashid Abdullah and his wife Sonia Sebastian alias Ayesha, an MBA, who were working with Peace Educational Foundation (PEF), an organisation that runs 10 schools in Kerala, were accused of ‘radicalising’ 22 youth from Padanna, Palakkad and Trikarippur. Abdullah had allegedly arranged the marriage between Nimisha and Bextin.
