‘Have irrefutable evidence that Indian MiG-21 shot down Pakistani F-16’, says IAF, shows radar images as proof

The Indian Air Force (IAF) briefed the press today in response to claims by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan that one of their F-16 jets wasn’t shot down by Wing Commander Abhinandan based on a dubious report.

Following the report by Foreign Policy, many Indian media outlets, with a hostile disposition towards the Modi government, lapped it up and used it to ridicule the government over the claims made by it regarding the downing of a Pakistani Falcon by an Indian MiG-21 Bison.

The IAF today stated, “One Mig 21 Bison of the IAF piloted by Wg Cdr Abhinandan shot down one F-16 of PAF. The F-16 crashed and fell across the LOC in PO J&K.” “The IAF has irrefutable evidence of not only the fact that F-16 was used by PAF on 27Feb19 but also that an IAF Mig21 Bison shot down a PAF F-16,” it added.

The IAF stated further, “The Indian Army posts in the vicinity of the LOC in the Jhangar sector (under Nowshera Brigade) have visually sighted two separate parachutes.” Comments made by the DG-ISPR and radio communications intercepts of Pakistan Army formations in the area were also cited to validate their observations in addition to radar images.

“In his initial statement on 27Feb19 DG ISPR categorically said ‘3 pilots – one in custody, two in the area’. Subsequently, DG ISPR also stated on camera in a press conference that they had two pilots. One in custody and the other had been admitted to hospital and was being given treatment. The same was further corroborated by the statement by the Pak PM on camera also indicating more than one pilot,” the statement said.

“There is no doubt that two aircraft went down in the aerial engagement on 27Feb19 one of which was a Bison of IAF while the other was F-16 of PAF conclusively identified by its electronic signature and radio transcripts,” the statement read.” The IAF has “more credible information and evidence” to prove the fact but is choosing not to do so due to “security and confidentiality concerns”.

The IAF also said in its statement that it has “achieved its objectives of successfully striking the terrorist camp at Balakot and thwarting the PAF attack against our military installations” while “PAF was unable to achieve its military objectives”.

Radar image showing presence of F-16 jetsThe Indian Air Force also showed radar images taken from Phalcon AWACS, which show the presence of F-16 jets, along with JF-17 jets of the Pakistan Air Force.

According to earlier reports, India had shared vital evidence of Pakistan’s use of F-16s in the attempted strike against India after the Balakot airstrikes with the USA. The IAF has consistently maintained that it has undeniable evidence of the downing of the F-16. Pakistan has been in denial ever since the jet went down as they were in violation of its treaty with the US which bars it from using the F-16s against other countries.

Abdullah, Mufti and their fake Jammu and Kashmir highway outrage

Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), the father and son Abdullah duo (NC) and Sajid Lone (People’s Conference) are calling upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir to defy the ban on access to Baramullah-Udhampur 270-km highway which came into force on Sunday.

Mufti has threatened to drag the government to court; Farooq Abdullah feels Kashmir is being treated as a “colony”, and Sajid Lone is viewing it as a humanitarian disaster.

They all are shedding copious tears and Lutyens Media, as if on prompt, is beating its breast at the alleged humanitarian disaster, quoting inconvenienced people who are visiting railway stations and hospitals or shopkeepers who flank the sides of the highway.

Since the ban is to remain in effect till May 31, well after elections are over, you could be sure they would be holding more demonstrations and defying the ban as they did on Sunday. Lutyens Media, as if on cue, would create a sustained noise to brainwash unsuspecting readers and feed their international echo chamber.

None would tell you the readers that:

  • It’s for army convoys to move between Jammu and Kashmir Valley and avoid a Pulwama-type tragedy.
  • The ban is only on Wednesday and Sunday for 13 hours, 4 am-5pm.
  • VVIPs are outside the purview of the ban (Omar Abdullah and Mufti held their campaign rallies in Uri and Beerwah on Sunday).
  • School children, government employees, emergency services and tourist vehicles are allowed after due scrutiny.
  • Civilian traffic is allowed once an army convoy has passed by.
  • Civilians can seek passes from the offices of district magistrates.
  • Civilians can have a day-pass in case of emergency.

Lutyens Media would be ready aids to these rumour-mongering politicians, without questioning if the country could afford another Pulwama attack or an Indo-Pakistan war which could ensue in its wake. Whether the government could be roasted in case Pulwama 2.0 happens. Whether an unfortunate incident could blow up our brave soldiers and bereave their families.

Neither the Lutyens Media nor vile politicians would rise up in fury on Pakistan for stating that the Modi government could “stage a new mishap” and thereafter “attack” Pakistan in order to win the 2019 General Elections. If you look at Indian Express this morning, you could think it’s a newspaper published from across the border. Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi is second lead story, with a photo to boot, while a livid India and its’ reaction on this “preposterous statement” intended to “whip up war hysteria” and “a call to Pakistan-based terrorists to undertake a terror attack in India” is buried deep inside the story.

Don’t politicians and Lutyens Media have any sentiments for India’s armed soldiers? Another Pulwama is just like fodder to their scheme to put Modi government in an awkward spot on the cusp of 2019 General Elections? Is this a loyalty towards your own motherland or those who want it in pieces?

So keep an eye on these politicians and Jammu & Kashmir over the next few weeks. Watch your newspapers avoid the inconvenient facts such as that it was Modi government which enforced a unilateral ceasefire during Ramadan last year. See how a fake human rights campaign is raised to a feverish pitch. And if you could urge the government to have a harsher ban on the highway. Inconvenience is no cost compared to the blown up soldiers on the highway.

UK court denies Vijay Mallya permission to appeal against his extradition to India

In the latest development in the extradition process of Vijay Mallya to India, a UK High Court on Monday denied permission to appeal against the extradition order. The development comes after he offered to cut down his expenses to pay back debt his defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes banks in India. Vijay Mallya had sought to appeal against his extradition order issued by the UK government, after getting the go-ahead from the Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

A spokesperson for the UK judiciary said that “the application for permission to appeal was refused by Mr Justice William Davis on 05/04/2019.” The spokesperson added that “the appellant (Mallya) has five business days to apply for oral consideration. If a renewal application is made, it will be listed before a High Court judge and dealt with at a hearing.”

The single judge court rejected permission for appeal based on papers submitted with the application.

Now that Mallya’s application has been rejected by Judge Davis, he has the option to submit for a “renewal”. The renewal process will lead to a brief oral hearing, which will include representations from the sides, Vijay Mallya and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on behalf of the Indian government. This process will determine whether the appeal can go for a full hearing.

The State Bank of India, which lent £1.142 billion ($1.5 billion) to Mallya for his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, has been reassured by his lawyers that their client is willing to curb his spending to £29,500 a month, SBI’s lawyers told a London court on Wednesday. He is currently spending about £18,300 a week.

Mallya is facing criminal charges of money laundering, fraud, and violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).  Mallya has now the option to appeal to the Supreme Court which may take at least another six weeks.

Back in India, the investigative agencies have come down hard against the liquor baron for defaulting on the loans borrowed by him. The investigating agency ED had informally conveyed to Heineken NV, the part-owner of United Breweries (UB), that it intends to allow banks to auction Vijay Mallya’s shares in the company that the banks had attached once the court grants its approval to the agency for the same.

A day after Mayawati appeals for consolidation of Muslims votes, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi cancel 3 rallies in areas with large Muslim population

Imran Masood, the Congress candidate from Saharanpur, has announced that rallies of the Nehru-Gandhi Parivar have been cancelled due to ‘bad weather’. Masood said, “For now the program has been cancelled at all three places (Shamli, Bijnor, Saharanpur), due to bad weather. We are planning Priyanka ji’s roadshow tomorrow.”

The Congress president and his sister, Priyanka, were supposed to address a rally at the Gandhi Park in Saharanpur to seek support for Masood. The constituency has a 42% Muslim population. The ‘Mahagathbandhan’ has fielded Fazlur Rahman from Saharanpur which includes five Assembly segments — Behat, Saharanpur, Saharanpur Dehat, Rampur Maniharan and Deoband. Bijnor district has over 43% Muslim population and the constituency has over 60% Muslim-Yadav-Dalit vote equation. Similarly, Shamli tehsil too has a large Muslim population. Shamli falls in the Kairana Lok Sabha constituency that has a substantial Muslim population as well.

It is pertinent to mention that only days after confessing his profound love for Prime Minister Modi, Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to campaign for a candidate who threatened to chop Narendra Modi into pieces.

Intriguingly enough, the cancellation comes merely a day after BSP supremo Mayawati exhorted Muslims to vote for her alliance as the Congress wasn’t strong enough in the state to compete against the BJP. Mayawati had said, “I want to say this to the people of the Muslim community that you should not spilt your vote. You should consolidate your vote in the favour of the candidates of SP and RLD and make them win.”

Certain speculations have been doing the rounds that the Congress is working towards taking Upper-Caste votes away from the BJP. However, it appears Upper Caste votes may not be the only vote-bank the Congress is tapping into as the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ appears concerned by the split in Muslim votes. The introduction of Priyanka Gandhi into the equation appears to have strengthened the party much more than what the Mahagathbandhan would have ideally preferred.

There have also been rather blatant attempts by Congress allies to curb the influence of the party, which the party naturally wouldn’t have taken kindly to. The SP-BSP alliance first embarrassed the Congress by leaving only two seats for them in Uttar Pradesh. Then, Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy donated a top JD(S) leader to the BSP so that the party could win more states. Under such circumstances, the Congress was staring at staring down the throat of a permanent loss of influence in the national scene.

However, with the cancellation of Rahul and Priyanka’s rallies a day after Mayawati’s attempts to prevent a split in Muslim votes, it appears an agreement has been successfully brokered between the two factions.

Mamata Banerjee launches personal attack on PM Modi, mocks him for not having a family of his own

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has again spewed venom against Prime Minister Modi by mounting personal attacks on him. Speaking at a public rally in Cooch Behar, Mamata said that in India large families having people of from different religious stay together but PM Modi would not know that as he does not have a family of his own and he does not consider the people of the country as his family.

While attacking Modi, the West Bengal CM said that in India large families consisting of people from different religions stay together, which is a rather strange comment. In India, large families are either joint families, or families having multiple wives and children of the same person, and such families usually follow the same religion. It is rare to find large families with persons from different religions in India, unlike what Mamata Banerjee is claiming.

This is not the first time that Mamata has dragged Modi’s family in their political rivalry. She had earlier accused Modi of neglecting his estranged wife. Calling Modi a liar she had questioned as to how Modi would take care of the people while he neglected his wife.

Opposition leaders give a tough competition to each other when comes to abusing Modi and his family. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, in response to being to addressed as “father of Lokesh” by PM Modi (Lokesh is Naidu’s son), had mocked Modi for not having a son or a family. He had accused Modi of having no respect for family system.

Last year, senior Congress leader Raj Babbar crossed all limits of decency after he took a jibe at the age of Modi’s mother. Comparing the falling value of rupee against Dollar with the age of Modi’s mother, Babbar had commented that the Rupee is falling so low that it is moving close to the age of Modi’s mother.

Another Congress leader Vilasrso Muttemwar giving a tough competition to Babbar’s remark went a step further to attack PM Modi and commented that no one knew who Modi’s father was.

It has become a norm for the opposition leaders to resort to personal attacks on PM Modi probably because of their failure to come up with something substantial to confront him with.

Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint eulogises a serial fake news peddler and habitual anti-India, anti-Hindu bigot

Controversial journalist Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint today profiled C J Werleman where they described him as a ‘bigot-turned-crusader against ‘Islamophobia’ who is taking on the Indian state’.

C J Werleman profiled by ThePrint

However, while gushing and fawning over Werleman who has been carrying out his ‘activism’ by ‘tweeting about Indian State’s “atrocities” on Kashmiri Muslims’, ThePrint forgets to mention the little detail about him that he is also a fake news peddler.

The anti-India part-time journalist, full-time propagandist Werleman has been caught spreading fake news about the same ‘atrocities’ on Indian Muslims more than once.

In August 2018, he took to Twitter to wrongly claim that the BJP had banned the slaughter of livestock during Eid. Werlemen also claimed that the Police Officer was forcing an Imam to declare “Qurbani is a punishable crime” to his followers in the video that he had attached.

The first part of his claim is patently false as we have reported that the BJP had only banned the slaughter of animals in public and imposed a total ban on cow slaughter. In the video, it could be seen that the Policeman was merely standing beside the Imam and he cannot be seen uttering a single word during the entire length of the video. Although the audio in the video is not quite clear, the Imam appears to be appealing to his followers to follow the directions issued by the administration and warned them of the consequences if they didn’t.

Uttar Pradesh Police also called out Werleman’s repeated offence.

C.J. Werlemen appears to have a special grudge against Uttar Pradesh, probably because a saffron-clad monk is the Chief Minister of the state. The tweets chosen by ThePrint to protray Werleman as a ‘crusader against Islamophobia’
refer to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as ‘Hindutva terrorist’.

He wrongly cites Yogi as referring to Muslims as ‘virus’ when Yogi was actually referring to the Indian Union Muslim League as ‘virus’. The Congress party is in alliance with Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which in turn is tied up with Jammat-e-Islami and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), both accused by National Investigation Agency (NIA) of spreading radicalism in Kerala.

During Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Wayanad to file his nomination, IUML members took rallies out abusing Narendra Modi as well. In this particular video, IUML members can be heard shouting “S*ala K*tta Narendra Modi”.

ThePrint conveniently forgets to mention this part. ThePrint does not clarify that Yogi is referring to IUML as ‘virus’ and not Muslims.

Moving on, on another occasion, Kasganj Police had to refute his allegations after Werlemen accused them of teaming up with ‘Hindu extremists’ to target Muslims. In a separate instance, this time not involving Uttar Pradesh, Werlemen used a video depicting the violence during the Bhima-Koregaon clashes in Maharashtra and claimed that it, in fact, showed Hindus destroying Muslim property.

Aurangabad in Bihar had violent communal clashes following the Ram Navami celebrations in the state in March 2018. However, Werleman used video of violence that took place in Maharashtra a few months prior during the Bhima-Koregaon incident, to lie that ‘Hindu fanatics’ were destroying Muslim properties.

The video Werleman has shared was actually of violence which took place in Maharashtra at an event to mark 200 years of the Bhima Koregaon battle near Pune on 1st January this year.

Despite being pointed out by people more than once, Werleman has kept these tweets with fake news which could flare up communal tension. CJ Werleman has been a regular offender.

His obsession with relating everything to Hindu extremism and inventing lies out of thin air seems to have gone over the edge. However, he is unlikely to mend his ways as agenda trumps everything.

Congress ally Farooq Abdullah calls for Kashmir’s ‘Azaadi’

BJP released its ‘Sankalp Patra’ for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections listing 75 milestones to be achieved by 2022, the 75th year of India’s Independence. The BJP announced a slew of measures for addressing core issues of the farm distress, National security, Kashmir, Infrastructure, Digitisation, Sanitation and many others. Regarding Kashmir, the BJP in its manifesto has maintained its position of the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A of the constitution to enable permanent assimilation of the state in the Union of India. However, this has not gone down well with the National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.

Fulminating against the BJP ‘Sankalp Patra’ that talks about abrogating Article 370 and Article 35A, the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah declared that if Article 370 and Article 35A are scrapped, the state’s accession to India will end. “They will bring outsiders to settle in Kashmir, they want to do away with Article 370. I swear by Allah, even Allah wants us to see us liberated from them. I will see how India’s flag is hoisted here,” Abdullah ranted.

This is a clear call for sedition from the senior politician, who is threatening that Kashmir will get independence from India if the articles are repealed. He is also saying he will not let the national flag to be unfurled in the state, which is a stand already taken by separatists operating in the valley.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir is under the President’s rule after the 6-month governor rule expired in December 2018. The state went into governor rule in June 2018, after BJP snapped its ties with the PDP. Since then, senior politicians of National Conference and PDP both are often seen taking hardline stances to woo Kashmiri voters and secure the majority in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The current rant by Farooq Abdullah can be termed as an attempt in that direction. The BJP, on the other hand, has always been consistent with its view about the Articles 370 and 35A, that are inherently discriminatory and which serve as an impediment for the complete amalgamation of the J&K with India.

Protection of culture as a national security issue: The most significant takeaway from the BJP’s manifesto

The 2019 manifesto of BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, when viewed in contrast with the manifesto of Congress gives one the opportunity to appreciate the extreme state of polarization in the current Indian polity. While the Congress’ manifesto gives one the impression that it was created by someone who has spent far too much in the Far-Left universities in the West, the BJP’s is a lot more grounded in Indian realities.

The great schism is most reflected in the cultural aspects of the respective manifestos. While the Congress’ shows that it has decided to continue its legacy of embracing a brand of secularism that is detrimental to the core Indian identity, the BJP’s is in stark contrast to that.

On the polarizing matter of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), while the Congress has decided to play it safe and promised to withdraw it should it return to power, the BJP is committed to its enactment even at the prospect of an adverse electoral impact. The manifesto says, “We (BJP) are committed to the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Bill for the protection of individuals of religious minority communities from neighbouring countries escaping persecution.” It adds, “Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs escaping persecution from India’s neighbouring countries will be given citizenship in India.”

At the same time, the BJP has also committed itself to “protect the linguistic, cultural and social identity of the people of Northeast.” The BJP has decided to take the hard way out on the matter. On the NRC, the manifesto says, “There has been a huge change in the cultural and linguistic identity of some areas due to illegal immigration, resulting in an adverse impact on local people’s livelihood and employment.” It adds, “We will expeditiously complete the National Register of Citizens process in these areas on priority. In future, we will implement the NRC in a phased manner in other parts of the country.”

The BJP’s stance on the closely related issues of CAB and the NRC, as illustrated in the manifesto, is consistent with what stalwarts like Himanta Biswa Sarma have been saying for quite a while. Arguably the most popular leader in the Northeast, Sarma had said if the choice was between his religion and language, he would choose his religion as it would ensure the protection of his language. Sarma has also said on numerous occasions that only the CAB could prevent Assam from becoming another Jammu and Kashmir, hinting towards the fanaticism and separatism that rules the latter.

The most significant aspect is the fact that the CAB and the NRC, which seeks to provide refuge to Indic peoples suffering in neighbouring Islamic regimes and protect the indigenous cultural identities of peoples in the Northeast, have been regarded as national security issues in the manifesto. The vision to treat the protection of culture and attempts to prevent a rapid demographic shift as a national security issue requires a certain level of maturity and intellect which the Congress has not displayed in its own manifesto.

The Congress, when it speaks of the matter, treats it as essentially a ‘Rights’ issue and not a national security issue as it deserves to be treated. Its priority is to “ensure that no citizen of India is denied inclusion in the final National Register of Citizens.” It doesn’t consider them as an essential national security matter as it ought to which reflect its lack of insight into the ground realities of India.

On the matter of Kashmir as well, the BJP has reiterated its promise to abrogate Article 370 and annul Article 35A. On the latter, the manifesto says that “the provision is discriminatory against non-permanent residents and women of Jammu and Kashmir.” It also says that the party will strive to ensure the safe return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland. Again, these are matters of culture, that they are treated as national security issues reflects the difference in the ideology between the two national parties.

‘Cultural Heritage’ has a separate section to itself as well in the BJP Manifesto. Apart from Ram Mandir and the Uniform Civil Code, which have been a regular feature in all the party’s manifestos, conserving ‘Bharatiya Faith and Culture’ and ‘Bharatiya Linguistic Culture’ has been made a priority as well. The Namami Gange project has been prioritized and a promise has been made to promote Yoga globally, something Narendra Modi has worked on extensively even during his first term as Prime Minister. In addition, a ‘Bharatiya Culture Festival’ has been promised which “will be organised on a grand scale every year in 5 different states to showcase and promote the rich diversity of Indian culture” and “efforts will be made for greater participation of Pravasi Bharatiya population and the international community.”

The most significant, however, was the mention of Sabarimala Temple in the manifesto. The mention of Sabarimala is extremely important as at a time when every manner of effort is being made to sow the seeds of division between people from the Northern and Southern regions of the country, the Gods can serve as very powerful means to bring us together. The presence of Shri Ram and Swami Ayyappa in the same manifesto is indeed a reflection of the invisible threads of Dharma that keeps our country together.

The manifesto says, “We will undertake every effort to ensure that the subject of faith, tradition and worship rituals related to Sabarimala are presented in a comprehensive manner before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.” It adds, “We will endeavour to secure constitutional protection on issues related to faith and belief.”

The latter promise could be very significant as in recent times, increasing efforts have been made by Judicial Activists to sabotage Hindu cultural practices by bypassing the democratic process. As we are aware, Western morality incorporated into the Constitution does not have the capability to address core Hindu concerns and offer protection to Hindu practices. A Constitutional provision is thus required to protect the Hindu faith from assault by Western dogma. That the BJP has taken the initiative to promise such a constitutional provision will be welcomed by core factions of the party’s support.

Even the party’s vision of Foreign Policy features a Sanskrit phrase that has become representative of who we are as people in recent times. The manifesto says, “While pursuing our national developmental and security interests, the ancient Indian vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ will form the basis in our global co-operation for progress, prosperity, peace and security, especially with friendly countries and neighbours. It adds, “Besides working to secure and safeguard ‘global commons’, we will strengthen our role as ‘first responder’ for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and develop partnerships for disaster resilient infrastructure.” That the party hints towards India’s Hindu heritage as the foundation on which its foreign policy will be based illustrate the core differences between the BJP and the Congress.

Thus, the BJP’s manifesto reflects the vision of a party that regards the protection of culture and demography as a national security issue. It also lays strong emphasis on India’s Hindu heritage through its commitment to ‘Bharatiya culture’ and adopting ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ as the foundation of its foreign policy. Moreover, the presence of Shri Rama and Swami Ayyappa in the same manifesto is symbolic of the inherent oneness of the diverse peoples of our country.

There are a couple of other issues which could have been made manifesto promises by the part. Repealing the discriminatory 93rd Amendment which actively discriminates against Hindu run schools and freeing Temples from the control of the secular state could have been given focus. However, such measures could have great adverse repercussions. Therefore, it’s understandable that the BJP, being a political party that it is, made no promises in that regard. But overall, the emphasis on protecting the cultural heritage of India and treating it as a national security issue is a positive development. Moreover, the promise to secure Constitutional protections for matters of faith such as the traditions of Sabarimala is very significant in light of the Judicial assault on Hindu practices.

BJP’s Sankalp Patra for Lok Sabha elections: What does it have for the middle class

Today the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party launched its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. The party has titled its manifesto as Sankalp Patra, meaning it’s not just announcement of promises, but a commitment to fulfil the promises made before the elections. Although parties make big promises for the poor, it is often alleged that the middle class is ignored by most parties. There is a general feeling that while the middle class pays taxes, they don’t get many benefits from the government. Therefore, let’s have a look at what BJP promises for the middle class in its Sankalp Patra.

Under the tax policy, the party promises that it will continue its current policy of lowering the tax rate, thereby rewarding honest taxpayers and improving compliance. The Manifesto says that the party is committed to further revise the tax slabs and the tax benefits to ensure more cash and greater purchasing power in the hands of our middle-income families. Therefore, although the party is not proposing any radical change in the tax system, they are promising the revision of tax slabs and reduction in Income Tax rates. The party also says that it will continue with the simplification of the GST process by engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders.

The party has promised that the government of India will expand its Credit Guarantee Scheme for the MSME sector, and credit of 1,00,000 crore for the sector will be achieved by the year 2024. The manifest also proposes to establish a National Traders’ Welfare Board and create a National Policy for Retail Trade for the growth of the retail businesses in the country. The government will provide an accident insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh to all traders registered under GST, and the party promises to launch a scheme to give Merchant Credit Card to registered merchants, like the Kisan credit card.

To encourage Entrepreneurship and Startups, BJP promises to launch a new scheme to provide collateral-free credit up to Rs 50 lakh. The government will guarantee 50% of the loan amount for female entrepreneurs and 25% of the loan amount for male entrepreneurs. The government will also promote and encourage Startups through the creation of a “Seed Startup Fund” of Rs 20,000 crore.

The party also says in its manifesto that it will set up a committee for Easing Citizens’ Interactions with Government (CECIG). The committee will work with experts in reforming citizen’s interface with the government in various fields like taxes, business compliance, rules and regulations etc, so that they can be made simpler and easier. BJP will explore every opportunity to implement the Right to Service.

Congress’ ‘tukde tukde’ vs BJP’s Nationalism: Two manifestos, two vastly different approaches

With 2019 Lok Sabha elections only days away, the two national rival political parties, BJP and Congress both have now released their manifestos. A manifesto is ideally meant to be a glimpse into the soul of the party and how they propose to govern a billion people should the country choose to put their faith in them. While Manifestos have traditionally been boring documents that have been tossed aside as a mere formality for all these decades, with two manifestos this election have gained much significance and provide a window in how the two parties aim to run the country.

While promises concerning farmers and the poor strata of the country are a matter of economics, one would imagine that on National Security issues, the two parties would invariably see eye to eye, however, that is not the case. The two manifestos chart out two widely varying paths that the two parties plan on taking with respect to National Security should they be elected to power.

What BJP promises

1. BJP promises to continue its ‘Zero tolerance policy’ when it comes to terrorism and extremism. It alludes to the Surgical Strikes and the Balakot Airstrikes to reiterate that it would continue to give a free hand to security forces.

2. An extremely important promise made by the BJP is to speed up the purchases of outstanding defence-related equipment and weapons.

3. Self-reliance when it comes to defence equipment is the BJP’s third promise as far as national security is concerned. It aims to strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities of India.

4. The BJP promises to focus on resettlement of soldiers and says that the Armed Forces would start working on a resettlement plan for soldiers 3 years before they are set to retire. This will include provision for skills training, so skills training, financial support for higher education, for housing and for starting an enterprise.

5. Modernisation of Central Armed Police Forces and assisting states in the process of modernisation of police forces.

6. Enforcement of National Registry for Citizens in a phased manner. Interestingly, BJP makes a reference to the demographic change that has been forced upon some areas due to illegal immigration. This is a point that has been the pet grouse of its support base for a long time.

7. Smart Fencing to check illegal infiltration on all borders.

8. The manifesto says “We have completed building six integrated check-posts with another under construction to facilitate easier trade and travel from the neighbouring countries. We will further ease the movement of goods and people by constructing 14 more integrated check-posts by 2024. Aer completion of all the proposed integrated check-posts, all trade movement with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan will be conducted through the integrated check-posts”.

9.  Establishment of National Committee for Strengthening Maritime & Coastal Security, Island Information System and National Academy of Coastal Policing, we will continue to take steps for ensuring the security of India’s long coastline.

10. Implementation of Citizen’s Amendment Bill that would grant citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighbouring states. The manifesto says: “We reiterate our commitment to protect the linguistic, cultural and social identity of the people of Northeast. Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs escaping persecution from India’s neighbouring countries will be given citizenship in India”.

11. Eradication of Left Wing Terrorism.

12. Abrogation of Article 370.

13. Commitment for the annulment of Article 35A of the Constitution of India as the provision is discriminatory against non-permanent residents and women of Jammu and Kashmir. We believe that Article 35A is an obstacle in the development of the state.

14. Ensure the safe return of Kashmiri Pandits

15. Provide financial assistance for the resettlement of refugees from West Pakistan, Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) and Chhamb.

How are the Congress and BJP manifestos different?

While the BJP manifesto makes no fantastical promises and the Congress manifesto promises several things that the BJP manifesto includes as well, there are certain fundamental differences that make the Congress manifesto worrisome for India.

First and foremost worrisome aspect is how Congress has promised the dilute AFSPA and ensure that the presence of security forces are reduced in the Kashmir Valley. While in their manifesto, they have tried to take a tough stand on internal security, it is intriguing that with this one move, most of the internal security issues would resurface as the terrorists would find their foothold in the valley yet again. The Congress in its manifesto also says that it would balance “human rights” and “security” and ensure that the Army doesn’t torture, forced disappearances and indulge in sexual violence with impunity. The Congress has thus ensured that the effect of AFSPA is reduced in a disturbed area like Kashmir and pandered to the Left that wants the Army out of Kashmir. It has also effectively signalled to the enemies of the state that their motivated and patently false narrative of Army brutality in Kashmir would find resonance with Congress, should they be voted to power again.

Interestingly, Congress also says that it would be willing to talk to “all stakeholders” in Kashmir without any pre-conditions. One can only assume that this would also include separatists and the Hurriyat thereby granting them the legitimacy all over again that has been denied by the Modi government in the last 5 years.

The Congress party manifesto makes another extremely disturbing promise. It says that they will ensure that the National Security Advisor is answerable to the Parliament. The role of the National security advisor is that of paramount importance and secrecy. To make the NSA answerable to all politicians alike would be a severe breach of secrecy with elements gaining access to information that under no circumstances should be available to them. Congress has yet again pandered to forces that expect India to go soft on enemy action simply because it suits a particular narrative implying that the NSA is too liable for imaginary “excesses”.

While both Congress and BJP in their manifestos talk about strengthening the armed forces, interestingly, the Congress party, pandering to its empty rhetoric and political ambitions talks about reviewing the Rafale deal. It would be pertinent to remind readers here that the Rafale deal was given a clean chit by the Supreme Court and the Congress party has been unable to prove any of their allegations. OpIndia itself reported how the Rafale deal may be getting sabotaged due to lobbying by Eurofighter with the Congress government and the Gandhi family itself. This, thus, begs the question of whether the Congress party is really thinking of national security or personal gains with this promise being included in the manifesto.

While the Congress party shows immense disregard for minorities of the neighbouring countries facing persecution by promising the withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Bill, it also makes no reference of NRC (National Registry of Citizenship) in its manifesto. The Congress manifesto also makes no promises to ensure that illegal immigrants are weeded out from the Indian society and that illegal Bangladeshis are sent back. In fact, Congress goes a step further almost promising the ensure that illegal Bangladeshis and others are made citizens of the country.

The Congress manifesto is at best vague and at worst sinister when it comes to the NRC and that of weeding out the illegal population from India. The only people who would be “left out of NRC” would be people who can’t prove their citizenship. By saying they will ensure “No Indian Citizen” is left out, Congress is either reiterating the obvious or alluding to the fact that they would even be sympathetic towards the people who claim to be citizens but cannot prove their citizenship. Also, the fact that Congress mentions how they would “secure the identity of the indigenous communities” with respect to illegal immigration, leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

Interestingly, while Congress seems to be moving heaven and earth to pander to a certain section of minorities in their manifesto, their promises have failed to include the Kashmiri Pandits who are perhaps the greatest testament to India’s failure on internal security. The BJP manifesto promises rehabilitation while the Congress manifesto focuses on protesting those who destabilise the country by screaming “Bharat Tere Tukde Honge” and the repeal of sedition laws.

Essentially, the Congress manifesto, while including some essential points on National Security, it makes certain other points that are bound to contribute to the Balkanisation of India and be severely detrimental to National Security. The BJP manifesto focuses on the continuity of their policies thus far a promise to fulfil the promises they failed to deliver on in the past 5 years. The Congress, on the other hand, has chosen to pander to elements who would much rather see India disintegrate violently into bits and pieces.

BJP has chosen to stick to its muscular policy and cultural nationalism in its manifesto, while the Congress party has in part, decided to pander to the ‘tukde tukde’ gang. Which manifesto resonates with the country remains to be seen.
