No Dalit, woman has ever held the post of General Secretary in CPIM

0

Sitaram Yechury today has been elected as the General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) at the 22nd Party Congress held in Hyderabad today.

Many twitter users questioned, that while the communists seem to make a lot of noise about Dalit, Muslim and women rights and equality, why hasn’t the communist party every had one of them as their General Secretary.

People were even critical of his credentials as a politician.

Surprisingly, a political party which talks about being all inclusive, is as exclusive and elitist as it could be. CPIM has never had a woman or a Dalit as the General Secretary. Ironically, Yechury has talked and written extensively on ‘integration of Dalits and backward classes in the mainstream of the society’.

Earlier we had reported how there were no Dalit or Muslim representatives in the Editors Guild of India, which is more like a close coterie that has nothing to do with upholding ethics of journalism. The body is essentially a joke and should be disbanded. It comes as a surprise how the ones who bat for having more representatives from Dalits, Muslims and women in higher positions in otherwise patriarchal setup are themselves quite upper caste, elitist club which stinks of male privilege.

Congress leader Mehak Khan arrested for kidnapping a B.Tech student, accused of ‘love jihad’

0

Congress leader from Uttarakhand, Mehak Khan and her son, have been accused of kidnapping an engineering student. According to police, Mahila Congress Pradesh Secretary Mehak Khan has been sent to judicial custody for allegedly kidnapping an 18-year-old girl. The father of the girl had filed a complaint against Khan and her son for kidnapping. Khan also runs a beauty parlour in Haldwani.

Hindu organizations have alleged that she wanted to get her son, Danish, married to the girl, to which the girl refused. Following that the girl was reportedly kidnapped. Reports say that Khan had come to the college where the girl studied with her son and took the girl forcibly with her after threatening her.

According to reports, the mother-son duo came to Haldwani with the kidnapped girl together, where she got off the car and sent her son off to Delhi and she was also in process of fleeing to Delhi. According to police, Mehak has confessed to getting her son married to the girl in a court in Ghaziabad. However, it cannot be ascertained for sure whether the wedding took place according to religious customs or it was registered in court. The police are currently trying to trace the couple.

Congress mouthpiece comes out in support of bigoted racist who called Lord Ram a pig

0

Congress mouthpiece National Herald, which has earlier indulged in spreading blatant lies and distorting facts, today came out with an article in support of the bigoted racist masquerading as a historian Audrey Truschke, who called Lord Rama a pig. Audrey Truschke a supposed historian who is best known for whitewashing the crimes of barbaric Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, cooked up a storm on Friday by alleging that Lord Ram was called a “misogynistic pig” by Sita while she when through her Agnipariksha (a trial by fire). However, after Twitter users called it out, National Herald deleted the tweet as well as the article.

However, a cached version of the article available here refers to pro-Aurangzeb Audrey as ’eminent historian and Sanskrit scholar’. National Herald defended her insult to Lord Ram as ‘merely using her mastery over the language and her extensive research in primary and secondary sources to interpret a literary text.’ and accused those who disagreed with her as ‘trolls’ who ‘seldom understand what a serious scholar is trying to say’.

However, in a surprise move, National Herald has deleted the article as well as the tweet plugging the article.

This is not the first time Congress has shown itself to be anti-Hindu against Lord Ram. Earlier in 2007, when Congress was in power at the Centre, Congress had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying there is no historical proof of Lord Ram’s existence. In fact, BJP’s Subramanian Swamy has also accused Congress is deliberately delaying the Ayodhya temple verdict since 2019 elections are just round the corner.

In seeking justice for victims, let us not perpetuate a stereotype that would hurt all victims of sexual violence

0

The Kathua case shook the conscience of the entire nation, and rightly so. There possibly can’t be a more heinous crime than an innocent, defenceless child being brutalised. While the enormity of the crime was just about dawning on the rest of the country, usual vested interests began to politicise and communalise the matter. However, politicisation and communalisation of crime aren’t new, and frankly, it has stopped surprising me.

What did shock me, however, is sub-par, borderline illiterates passing absolutely irresponsible statements about the medical procedure of establishing the occurrence of sexual assault. One such sample came from the wildly moronic journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai. This tweet was deleted later.

Rajdeep claims that he is in possession of the ‘full post-mortem report” that specifically mentions “hymen not intact”, indicating that a girl’s hymen not being intact is an indication of sexual assault. The fact that he even mentioned “hymen not intact” indicates the sheer idiocy of the conversation that revolves around sexual assault.

A hymen is a thin membrane that partially closes the opening of the vagina. Firstly, the myth that the hymen covers the entire vaginal opening must be dispelled. If it did, women wouldn’t be able to menstruate. Secondly, it must be borne in mind that many women can be born without a hymen and that, obviously, has nothing to do with intercourse. The myth that a hymen is the mark of virginity (which means that intercourse and/or sexual assault happened if the hymen is not intact) is perhaps the greatest lie, and a lie, which has foisted innumerable horrors on women.

The hymen, which is just another tissue can rupture for various reasons. Running, exercising, horseback riding, cycling, or pretty much any physical activity. Often, there is some blood discharge when this happens, but that too is not a norm.

The notion, that was also perpetuated by Rajdeep Sardesai, of connecting a woman’s non-intact hymen to sexual assault/intercourse is a horrible myth that undermines the trauma of victims and reinforces age-old, regressive practices against women.

This notion gave rise to the wildly unscientific and invasive “virginity test”, or the “two finger test”. This basically meant a medical examiner (or pretty much anyone) inserting two fingers into the vaginal cavity and checking if the hymen is intact. If it was, the conclusion was made that the woman is a virgin, if not, it was concluded that the woman, well, was not a virgin. This abrasive “test” was used to suppress and humiliate women in all forms.

During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the military agreed that they had subjected women protestors to virginity tests. Their reasons for doing so were even more shocking. “The girls who were detained were not like your daughter or mine,” the general said.

“These were girls who had camped out in tents with male protesters in Tahrir Square, and we found in the tents Molotov cocktails and (drugs). We didn’t want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren’t virgins in the first place,” the general said. “None of them were (virgins).”

These are the words of an Egyptian general who presumably used these ‘tests’ to humiliate women enough to stop them from protesting and ensure none of them come forward with rape allegations.

In 1979, there was a massive outcry when it was revealed that authorities were subjecting immigrant women to virginity tests at the Heathrow Aiport. This was to ensure their bona fides when they claimed they were in the country to marry. In fact, at the time, even the Indian Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Alan Nazareth, had registered a strong protest with Evan Luard, an Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, saying that the Indian government was outraged and wanted the practice banned.

I quote from a January 23rd, 2018 India Today article, the group Rajdeep Sardesai works for :

“On January 22, three young men were beaten up by a mob of people for trying to find women a respectable standing in society. These three victims belong to the Kanjarbhat community and are part of a WhatsApp group, called Stop the V Ritual.

This is NOT the first time someone trying to oppose this ritual has faced a backlash. On November 25, 2017, one of the members of this WhatsApp group, 21-year-old Siddhant Indrekar, filed a complaint against the caste panchayat at the Vishrantwadi police station. Siddhant claimed he had recorded members of the caste panchayat accepting Rs 10,000 from a bride and a groom to approve their marriage. No action has been taken since, even though he was told that the police would “look into the matter”.”

The ‘two-finger test’ (also called the virginity test) that is perpetuated by the ‘hymen not intact’ statement made by Rajdeep Sardesai has been condemned by the World Health Organisation.

“The WHO handbook upholds the widely accepted medical view that ‘virginity tests’ are worthless,” said Liesl Gerntholtz, women’s rights director at Human Rights Watch. “Health authorities worldwide should end the practice of ‘virginity testing’ in all cases and prohibit health workers from perpetuating this discriminatory and degrading practice.”

Coming to the use of the two-finger test of the application of the hymen theory to ascertain sexual assault.

A medical journal published in the USA draws this conclusion from their study :

“Despite the lack of evidence of medical utility and the potential harms, health professionals in multiple settings continue to practice virginity testing, including when assessing for sexual assault. health professionals must be better informed and medical and other textbooks updated to reflect current medical knowledge. Countries should review their policies and move towards a banning of virginity testing”.

In fact, if one looks at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s ‘Guidelines and Protocols, Medico-legal care for survivors/victims of sexual violence’ the two-finger test has been clearly banned. It also categorically states that the condition of the hymen is no indication of sexual assault. Sexual assault can still have occurred if the hymen is not intact, and sexual assault might not have happened even if the hymen is not intact.

A screenshot of Page 28 of the manual :

In 2013, after the ghastly Nirbhaya rape and murder case, the Verma Committee had also come down strongly on the two-finger test and recommended that it be banned.

“The two-finger test, which has been found to be not only unscientific and unnecessary but also subjects the complainant to further trauma and humiliation should be immediately stopped,” said Kirti Singh, of the All India Democratic Woman’s Association.

The Supreme Court has said that such tests are inhuman and should be banned. Even after the Delhi gang-rape case of December 2013, Justice Verma Committee had also recommended the same thing that two finger tests are like another assault on the victim and the test should be stopped. The Delhi Government has conceded in its guidelines that two-finger test should be banned for the cases of sexual assault and advised doctors to counsel the victims.

Thus, after all the evidence against including “hymen not found intact” in reports, it was shocking to see the Jammu and Kashmir police use the phrase explicitly in its press release today.

The Forensic Labs reportedly say that the vaginal swab matches with the accused. The vaginal swab matching the accused would prove sexual assault by the accused beyond reasonable doubt. I have absolutely no reason or evidence to doubt what the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch asserts in their press release. I am sure due procedure was followed to conclude sexual assault, as media has reported.

However, I am forced to wonder why the Crime Branch wouldn’t mention the vaginal swab evidence but rather focus on the “hymen of the victim not found intact” argument that doesn’t even prove sexual assault by the MoHW’s own guidelines. It is indeed painful that Rajdeep Sardesai and now even the Jammu Crime Branch decided to reinforce and perpetuate a terrible, false stereotype that has subjugated and humiliated women since time immemorial.

The hymen, its existence or the lack of it, has nothing to do with sexual assault. And asserting that it does, leaves hundreds of other victims vulnerable to the intrusive test that would humiliate and violate them further after the assault.

It is thus my humble submission. In our quest for justice, let us not perpetuate extremely regressive and prejudicial arguments. Let us not, in our quest to bring the perpetrators to book, reinforce tools that will, going forward, humiliate other victims of sexual assault. If we cut our nose to spite our face, it would only hurt the thousands of victims of sexual assault that seek justice.

BJP clean sweeps Jharkhand municipal elections, also wins in Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat polls

0

The BJP on Friday swept the Municipal Elections in Jharkhand by winning all five municipal corporations, besides registering victories in Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat polls. The elections took place on 16 April, the votes of which were counted on Friday.

The five municipal corporations BJP won are – Ranchi, Medninagar, Adityapur, Hazaribagh and Giridi, which means the party will have both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor in these seats.

In case of Ranchi’s Mayoral seat, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) Varsha Gari was defeated by BJP’s Asha Lakra by about 39,000 votes. The BJP won the Deputy mayoral seat by defeating a Congress candidate.

In case of the Municipal Council polls which were held for 16 seats, the BJP is pitted to have seven Chairpersons and five Vice-Chairpersons, with seats like Gadhwa, Sahebganj, Pakud and Chirkunda having both the posts filled by BJP candidates.

When it comes to the 14 Nagar Panchayats, the BJP won nine President and five Vice-President posts. The JMM won four President and two VP posts, Congress on the other hand won two President and three VP posts. Besides Domchanch, Husainabad, Kapali and Chhatarpur, the BJP has managed to win at least one post in all the Nagar Panchayats.

These results were welcomed by current Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das who called it a victory of development and 3.5 crore citizens of Jharkhand. He also called it a victory of PM Modi’s policies and BJP Chief Amit Shah’s guidance.

Such a victory for the BJP in local body elections comes a couple of months after the party registered an assertive victory in Gujarat by winning 47 Nagar Palikas. In these polls the BJP won 27 out of 28 seats in the Prime Minister’s hometown, Vadnagar.

PNB gets down to business : Impounds passports of 150 wilful defaulters, 37 FIRs lodged so far

0

State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB), the second-largest public sector lender said on Friday that based on its complaints passports of 150 wilful defaulters were impounded. Apart from this 37 FIRs against those who are not repaying loans has been lodged as part of its recovery drive. The bank has already declared 1,084 wilful defaulters and has published photos of 260 of them in newspapers.

The bank already encumbered in the Rs 13,000-crore scam involving jewellers Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and their companies, said that it is strengthening its recovery efforts with innovative recovery mechanisms and technology partnerships.

This is the first such revelation made by any bank in the country, following the government’s instructions to banks on seeking passport copies of all those who have borrowed more than Rs 50 crore.

State-run lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) is expected to recover around Rs 1,800 crore from a non-performing assets (NPAs) recovery mechanism – “Mission Gandhigiri” – which will soon complete one year of operation. Since the campaign rolled out in May 2017, has consistently delivered positive results with an average recovery of Rs 150 crore. “The mission was born out of the need to name and shame defaulters to increase societal pressure and urge them to pay back.

As a part of their aggressive stance, PNB claimed to leverage data analytics for loan recovery and risk management and said that it has tied up with a leading credit agency. ‘This partnership is part of the larger strategy to deploy technology to strengthen internal systems,’ it said while adding that PNB has been actively working towards improving internal systems by incorporating analytics and artificial intelligence for the reconciliation of accounts.

In addition, the bank has also set up special onetime settlement (OTS) schemes that have helped accelerate NPA recovery for the bank. From an average of recovering loan amount from around 80,000 NPA accounts in a year, this move has resulted in the recovery of 2.25 lakh NPA accounts over a span of 10 months. “These schemes apply to small NPA accounts helping defaulters come out of debt.”In February, PNB had created history of sorts by making public the list of 900 wilful defaulters, including Winsome Diamonds, Zoom Developers and Nafed, which owed ₹11,000 crore to the bank.

Till date, there are over 7,000 deliberate and wilful defaulters who owe ₹60,000 crore to banks.

Mamata Banerjee to ban university professors from criticising the government

I am Bengalistan and I am ashamed.

Mamata Banerjee’s government in West Bengal has drafted new rules that govern which opinions professors and college teachers at state government-run institutions are allowed to express in public:

According to the draft rules :

Untitled.png

No employees of state government run universities will be allowed to express anything that amounts to “adverse criticism” of any policy or action of the government.

There are many chilling aspects about this, but there are two that I find especially disturbing, which is why I have underlined them in red.

The first is that criticism of the government is to be banned both anonymously and otherwise. The paranoia over anonymous criticism adds that extra bit of draconian edge to these censorship rules; and indicates that she is dead serious about implementing the gag order. In TMC’s Bengal, academics should not feel safe merely because they dared to criticize the Chief Minister from behind a veil of anonymity. The government is making it clear that they will be hunted down, their anonymity stripped away and the dissenters will be punished.

The second is that the rules bar employees even from making “statement of fact” that has the effect of criticizing the government. A ban on facts!

Absolutely breathtaking in its ruthlessness. Academics, researchers, who are supposed to dig up the truth, who are required to present the unvarnished, unadulterated truth as part of their profession are now to be banned in Bengal from stating any facts that would have the effect of criticizing the government!

Notice the deliberately loose language which shows just how broad the sweep of these new rules is going to be. The ban is not just on criticizing the government but on expressing any fact or opinion that would have the effect of criticizing the government.

In other words, no more stating the facts and letting the reader make up their own mind. As long as some reader could use the facts presented by you to criticize the government, you are still liable to be punished.

Dictators in every age have clamped down on opinions, but Mamata Banerjee might just have pioneered a ban on facts along with opinions.

I hope that the youth icons, academics and intellectuals of our great nation will unite and speak up in one voice to defend democracy from the clampdown of Mamata Banerjee. I hope there is going to be a flood of open letters and angry articles in various enlightened “news” portals, not to mention journalists and students hitting the streets nationwide.

Azaadi!

I wouldn’t count on it though.

Death penalty for child rapists : Modi government approves Ordinance to be promulgated

0

The union cabinet today approved an ordinance to amend existing laws to include the death penalty for the rapist of children below 12 years of age. According to reports, the cabinet took up the draft ordinance into consideration and approved the proposed amendments to the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

According to reports, the existing laws provided for life imprisonment under the POCSO Act and after the Nirbhaya case of 2012, the Indian Penal Code was amended to allow the death penalty to rapists if the victim was left dead or in a vegetative state.

Prime Minister Modi had reportedly called for an emergency cabinet meeting after arriving from his 5-day visit to Sweden and UK to discuss the rolling out of the legislation pending in the parliament. The ordinance comes in the wake of many heinous cases of rape and murder of children reported from different parts of the country in recent weeks. Earlier today, the government had informed the Supreme Court that it was in the process of bringing amendments to the POCSO Act.

In recent months, at least four states have approved the provision for death penalty for the convicted rapists of children below 12 years of age. Madhya Pradesh was the first Indian state to approve the death penalty for child rapists. It was followed by Rajasthan and Haryana.

According to the Economic Times report, the changes made in the law are listed as follows:

  1. Minimum jail term for rape increased to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment.
  2. In case the victim is under 16, minimum jail term will be 20 years, extendable to end of natural life.
  3. Punishment for the gang rape of an under 16 girl is imprisonment till the end of life.
  4. Minimum imprisonment in cases of rape of a child below 12 is 20 years, life imprisonment or death.
  5. The minimum punishment for the gang-rape of a child below 12 will be imprisonment till the rest of life or death.

The amendment has also proposed for speedy trials to be completed within 2 months for all cases of rape and time limit for disposal of all appeals in rape cases has been set at 6 months. The amendment also rules out the provisions of anticipatory bail for the accused for victims below 16 years of age and the courts have to give notice of 15 days to the public prosecutor and representative of the victim before deciding on the bail plea of the accused.

The centre has also called for the establishment of new Fast Track Courts and appointments of new public prosecutors to deal with rape cases. It also provides for the availability of rape testing kits at all police stations and hospitals and setting up of special forensic laboratories in each state.

The central government has also ordered that the National Crime Records Bureau will maintain national database and profiles of sexual offenders which will be regularly shared and updated with data from all states and UTs.

10 questions raised by residents of Kathua and why they doubt the charge sheet filed

0

Earlier today, Swarajya magazine presented a comprehensive ground report on the Kathua rape case which raises questions on the charge sheet filed by the Jammu and Kashmir crime branch and also throws light on why the villagers are not convinced about the legitimacy of the investigation so far.

Sanji Ram, the only brother of six sisters, father of two married daughters is the main accused in this most abhorrent and rarest of rare crimes committed against the girl child in the recent, degradation is accentuated by the fact that he allegedly hatched the devious plan of abducting and mercilessly killing an eight-year-old girl of the nomadic Gujjar-Bakerwal Muslim community in order to instil fear in them to such an extent they leave the area forever.

His alleged crime is accentuated by the fact that he picked the abode of his family deities – devasthan, the holy place where he has been a pujari for decades – for executing his plans. Not only this, he involved his nephew and his son, studying in Meerut who allegedly joined later, in this nefarious crime. And when the going got tough, he agreed to throw his juvenile nephew under the bus and make him the fall guy. Under pressure, he revealed the entire plan to the cops, leading to arrest of all the eight accused. This is fundamentally what the charge sheet tells us, but the locals are not willing to accept this and disregard it calling it a ‘Filmy Kahani’, concocted by the police, by intimidating the accused, to suit the political boss’ narratives.

There are many questions by the villagers doing the rounds, which raises fingers at the charge sheet produced by the police.

  1.  If the body was discovered on the 17th of January, how was it that the body did not emanate any foul smell even after three days.
  2. Why did no one spot the body while on their way to Devasthan, especially on 16 January, when they visited the shrine in large numbers?
  3. Why, in the cold of January, did the body not become stiff? Villagers claim that when they saw the body at a protest staged by Bakarwals, it was limp.
  4. Why would Sanji Ram’s sister send her minor son to stay with him had she known that her brother will deploy her son to carry out this heinous crime.
  5. Why would the key conspirator leave the body just outside Devasthan even on the day of Fanda when scores of people came and feasted in the Bhandara? Why didn’t he simply dig up the earth and bury the body? The charge sheet says the accused had washed the girl’s clothes to destroy evidence, but why would he just stop at that and not make any efforts to hide the body.
  6. How was it that the girl in the Devasthan on 13 January when lots of people visited the place, the day of Lohri, was spotted by none. We picked up darees from the table under which allegedly the girl was hidden, and placed them on the floor to sit and sing devotional songs. There is no chance a girl is kept under the table and no one sees it,” said Bishan Das, a 76-year-old Rassana resident who retired as subedar from the Army.
  7. How could Sanji Ram’s son, Vishal Jangotra, be in Meerut and Kathua at the same time? The crime branch investigation places Vishal in Rasana while the college records show that he was giving exams in Meerut.
  8. The charge sheet mentions that the juvenile hit the girl with a stone twice and “killed her by pressing his knees against her back and strangulated the girl by applying force on both the ends of her chunni.” However, according to the medical reports, the “…victim had been kept without food and administered sedatives and her cause of death was asphyxia leading to cardiopulmonary arrest.” Which one is it?
  9. The charge sheet says the investigation team found a hair strand in the Devasthan. If the girl was kept for days in the room, how come the cops found only a strand of hair there?
  10. How come the mastermind who supposed to have carried out the grand conspiracy turned out to be a nincompoop? When he spent lakhs in bribing local cops for covering it all up, why couldn’t he arrange a vehicle to bury or hide the body? Why, of all the places in the entire jungle, would he chose to throw the body in the open, barely a stone’s throw-away from his home, at a spot from where his house is the nearest and thus most vulnerable to suspicion?

This, in brief, is why villagers believe there is “a conspiracy from outside” and are alleging that “the girl was killed and dumped in Rasana”.

Moreover, there are two major facts that make villagers believe, that this was a “conspiracy from outside” and that innocents are being framed into this.

Conspiracy 1:

According to a villager named Bishan Das, the village transformer went bust on 16th January and a motorcycle was spotted around 3am. “The men riding the bike had wrapped ‘kambal’ around their body. It was cold. I could not sleep after this. Some 25-30 minutes later, the bike returned and left the village,” says Das whose house is at the entrance of the village. Villagers believe the bikers had thrown the body at the site themselves.

Journalist Swati Goel Sharma, who brought this ground report to the fore tweeted a video of a villager.

Conspiracy 2:

The girl’s body was sent to Kathua district hospital for an autopsy on the afternoon of 17 January. Villagers say that activist-lawyer Talib Hussain was also present. How did he reach Kathua from “his hometown Poonch in a matter of hours”, the villagers asked. Swarajya spoke to many residents of Kootah and Rasana village and all confirmed that Sanji Ram’s name was indeed taken on 17th itself. How was the name of the accused taken before even the final investigation had begun?

According to sources, the villagers feel that their reputation is being tainted by spreading false rumours and allegations. The vicious campaign is now targeting the entire Hindu community. We have seen Whatsapp and Facebook posts that depict condoms on Shivji’s Trishul with the girl’s dead body on one spike. It’s disgraceful how their focus has changed from demanding justice for the little girl to maligning the whole community. “Are our gods and our religious symbols synonymous with rape now?” fumes an angry shopkeeper at Kathua.

Swati Goel Sharma also tweeted a video of the villager whose picture has been circulated as the alleged rapist. He says he is getting threats and fears for his life.

Swati also tweeted a video of a local responding to allegations of being ‘defenders of rapists.’

There appear to be some holes in the charge-sheet filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch and its coverage by the media has left a bad taste in the mouth. Whether or not Sanji Ram and others committed this dastardly attack will be decided by the competent agencies. But no one is ready to accept that Sanji would go to such lengths as to employ his own son and his nephew to carry out the evil plan.

While this crime has shook the conscience of the nation, the concerns of the villagers too cannot be dismissed. They have clearly said they want a fair probe and are not defending the perpetrators. They even said that they would walk the perpatrator to the noose if found guilty. One wonders then – what is so criminal in asking for a fair probe?

Pro-Aurangzeb ‘historian’ spreads false and derogatory comment about Lord Ram

Audrey Truschke a supposed historian who is best known for whitewashing the crimes of barbaric Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, cooked up a storm on Friday by alleging that Lord Ram was called a “misogynistic pig” by Sita while she when through her Agnipariksha (a trial by fire):

Pro-Aurangzeb 'historian' spreads false and derogatory comment about Lord Ram
Tweet by Audrey Truschke

In the above tweet, Truschke claimed to have “loosely translated” Valmiki’s narration of the Ramayana. Soon objections were raised over the comment of hers, and she later brazened it out by claiming that she had “summarised parts of the Ramayana accurately and in colloquial English”.

When asked to provide references for her sensational claims she cited a couple of verses from a “Sanskrit critical edition” which she claimed were translated into English by Goldman and Pollock.

This was soon picked up by well-known Twitter historian True Indology who asserted that Sita had merely accused Ram of not trusting her, without going to the extent of calling him a “misogynistic pig”. Coming to the references provided by Truschke, True Indology claimed that the two scholars contradict each other and that Truschke herself had provided incorrect references.

To drive home his point, he later posted the complete translation of the said verse where nothing remotely close to “misogynistic pig” was visible:

Twitter user and columnist Abhinav Agarwal too listed out the said Sanskrit Shloka in question, and translated Sita’s statement to Ram as, “Why are you speaking such harsh words, which are violent to hear for me, like a common man speaking to a common woman”. He also floated the possibility of the word “common” being replaced by vulgar but again there was no connection to the phrase, “misogynist pig”.

Later when she was supposedly cornered, Truschke described her controversial statement as being colloquial, and not being a literal one:

Other Hindu scholars too took note of Audrey’s claims and author Hindol Sengupta described them as an attack on a non-white culture by racist white supremacists while pressing her to prove her claims or apologise instead:

Even bestselling author Amish Tripathi drew a conclusion similar to Sengupta:

Even though not commenting directly on the matter, noted author and economist Sanjiv Sanyal listed a quote from Edward Said’s book Orientalism, about Western scholars controlling the interpretation of a culture, which might accurately describe what Truschke and her ilk might be up to:

Even after being thoroughly proven wrong Truschke didn’t apologise for her erroneous and defamatory claims and took refuge under a supposed victim card by compiling the alleged abuses she received, without engaging in a proper debate with the aforementioned scholars, who respectfully raised various pertinent points.
