Pakistan: Islamist mobs descend into Supreme Court premises, demand Chief Justice’s resignation for saying Ahmadiyya man booked for blasphemy has ‘right to religion’

The “Sar tan se juda” mob comprising thousands is protesting in Pakistan against Supreme Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Isa, who was appointed the Chief Justice of Pakistan in November last year has been facing death threats and protests since February this year after he ordered the release of a Ahmadiyya man Mubarak Sani. On the 29th of May, a three-judge bench including Chief Justice Isa, Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan reserved its decision.

The fresh protests erupted after the court on 24th July accepted the Punjab government’s plea alongside those of several Islamist organisations seeking a review of its February ruling and said that the right to profess religion and religious freedom, as ensured by the Constitution, is subject to law, morality and public order. A hearing on these pleas will be held on 22nd August.

Why are the Islamic mobs demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice?

The protesting Islamists are demanding CJP Faez Isa’s resignation. On 19th August, a large number of protesters from various Islamist groups breached Islamabad’s highly secured, Red Zone storming the Supreme Court entrance gates to protest the Pakistan apex court verdict in the Mubarak Sani case.

In the February ruling, Justice Isa granted bail to Ahmadiyya man Mubarak Ahmad Sani who was accused of blasphemy in 2019 over distributing pamphlets promoting his religious beliefs. Sani was convicted under the Punjab Holy Quran (Printing and Recording) (Amendment) Act, 2021, however, the 3-judge bench led by Justice Isa noted that Sani was charged for an offence not criminalised until 2021. Consequently, the top court granted bail to Sani and ordered his immediate release. Soon after, the TLP and other Islamists launched a hate campaign against Qazi Faez Isa. In Peshawar, around 3000 people blocked the roads in February and raised slogans like “Death to Qadianis” etc. The agitation of Islamists compelled the Supreme Court to issue a statement ‘defending’ its decision in the Mubarak Sani case.

TLP places bounty of 1 crore Pakistani Rupees on CJP’s head

Notably, the Islamist outfit Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) has even placed a bounty of 1 crore Pakistani rupees on Judge Isa’s head. Pir Zaheerul Hasan Shah, the second top leader of TLP, placed this bounty.

“TLP aside, as a momin [faithful Muslim] and a slave of Prophet Muhammad, I announce in my capacity to give one crore [ten million] rupees to any person who beheads Faiz Isa who desecrated the law of the country, kicked the blood of 10,000 martyrs and permitted Marzai [Ahmadis] and hurt the feelings of Muslims,” Shah said in a rally.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar shared a video of Shah’s inflammatory remarks and said, “There is no room for such statements in the state of Pakistan and it will not be tolerated. Qazi Sahib did not give any decision in favor of any group or group. On the basis of which this hateful narrative is being propagated, we strongly condemn and strongly deny such statements, such mentality is causing serious damage to Pakistan. There are political motives behind this false narrative.”

Notably, Ahmadiyyas in Pakistan face severe persecution after the state formally designated them non-Muslims in 1974, and blasphemy laws are regularly used against them. Mubarak Sani’s release was deemed a violation of the religious beliefs held by Islamist outfits such as the TLP, which consider Ahmadiyyas heretics. OpIndia has often reported on the persecution of this group in Pakistan, which, ironically, was instrumental in the creation of Pakistan. Given the fact that the Pakistani Supreme Court is already on back foot, it will most likely reverse its order and incarcerate the accused Ahmadiyya man again.

It must be noted that blasphemy allegations have been used as a weapon by Islamists to attack people, especially non-Muslims in Pakistan. From Arabic calligraphy to QR-code, or the non-Muslims practicing their faith, anything can offend these Islamists who then resort to violent protests, giving ‘Sar tan se juda’ calls, mob lynching etc.

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan applies to become the next Chancellor of Oxford University from jail

0

Jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has applied to become the next chancellor of Britain’s Oxford University, his party said on Monday.

The Oxford alumnus “formally submitted” the request via Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party said on the social media platform X.

“Pakistan’s national hero and Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder and chairman of Pakistan’s biggest political party PTI, a cricketing legend, a philanthropist and an alumnus of Oxford University, is running for the position of Chancellor of Oxford University, all while being imprisoned,” the PTI post read.

“Despite being unlawfully incarcerated for over a year, Khan remains committed to his principles and the causes he champions. Zulfi Bukhari has confirmed that the application has been formally submitted,” it added.

Khan’s party’s announcement comes after Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, announced in February that he would be stepping down as Oxford chancellor, Al Jazeera reported.

However, the list of candidates for the 10-year term will not be made public until October, according to the university’s website, and voting is to take place at the end of that month.

Khan graduated from the university in 1975 after studying philosophy, politics, and economics.

He then reportedly led a playboy lifestyle during his career as one of Pakistan’s greatest cricket players, regularly gracing the pages of Britain’s gossip magazines, according to Al Jazeera.

The former Pakistan premier married three times in his life, including to British socialite and filmmaker Jemima Goldsmith. He also served as the chancellor of the University of Bradford from 2005 until 2014. Khan later turned to philanthropy and politics, serving as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

Khan was ousted from premiership in 2022 when he lost a vote of confidence, following which he launched a strong comeback campaign attacking Pakistan’s military, whose leading generals had once backed him, and drew massive crowds onto the nation’s streets.

Khan was imprisoned in August last year on various charges from corruption to inciting violence. He recently completely one year in jail.

The PTI founder has called these charges “politically motivated” and designed to keep him from power, Al Jazeera reported.

Islamist outfit Hefazat-e-Islam calls for Sharia Law in Bangladesh: Read about the extremist group that was behind the 2021 anti-Modi protests

Vice President of the Islamist organisation Hefazat-e-Islam (protector of Islam) Bangladesh, Muhyiddin Rabbani, recently stoked controversy when he argued that the nation should adopt Islamic law as opposed to its current legal and constitutional structure, a long-standing objective of the outfit. Notably, the country has grappled with violent anti-quota protests followed by multiple targeted attacks on minority communities and their religious places, especially Hindus by extremist forces after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on 5th August. Rabbani made it explicit that they intended to create an Islamic state in Bangladesh. According to him, an Islamic government would safeguard Islam and its precepts while also bringing justice to the populace.

Rabbani highlighted that Pakistan was formed in the name of Islam, insinuating that Bangladesh was earlier a part of the country before it gained independence in 1971.

“Islam was the basis of the creation of Pakistan. Pakistan was created for Islamic rule. We are Muslims and the majority in Bangladesh. We want this country should adhere to Islam and our demand is which is genuine. When we gained freedom, Muslims claimed that this country would be governed by Islam and we continue to seek the same. Islam even considers the rights of non-Muslims which is not the case in any other religion.” However, the miserable condition of minorities, particularly Hindus in the neighbouring Islamic states of India proves otherwise. He also alleged that no one was persecuted in the days of Prophet Muhammad.

When countered with reports of assaults on Hindus, their properties and temples in several parts of Bangladesh since 5th August, he claimed that the outfit appealed to the politicians to protect the temples and churches in the country. Raabbani who studied in India’s Deoband, in a further demonstration of the maximalist ideology of the group, referred to the Ahmadiyya community as Kufar or Kafir (infidels), akin to demands of radical outfits in Pakistan. He declared, “We do not consider Ahmadis as Muslims. They are infidels,” as he reiterated that Hefazat-e-Islam wants Bangladesh to remain a part of the Islamic system. He even had a message for Indian Muslims urging them to live peacefully with Hindus, “The message to Muslims in India is that you are our neighbours. You are our sincere brothers. Live in harmony with Hindus as we live in Bangladesh,” he claimed, to downplay the oppression of Hindus by jihadis in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, he insisted that India is already ruled by Hindus when he was asked if the same principles (religion of the majority population should govern the country) should be applied to India as well given its majority Hindu population. Rabbani defended himself and stated that it was acceptable when it was argued that the Constitution, not any particular religion, governs India. He added that the majority should rule the nation, according to Islam and emphasised that although there are various nations, there is only one Allah.

He clarified that there will be no place for music or arts in the country under Islamic rule, “If Islamic law is implemented, everyone will have rights in the form of justice. We shall base our decisions about music on what is permissible in Islam. We don’t like art or music. We will oppose it. I’ll strongly speak against it.” He once again voiced that matters including the Hijab would be subjected to consideration under the Sharia after the country executes Islamic Law.

The outfit even wants statues of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation, and other prominent figures to be taken down. Rabbani conveyed, “We will request that the statues built across the country be demolished.” He claimed that while idols in Hindu temples should be preserved, statues of political personalities, especially those associated with the nation’s secular origins, should be demolished. Interestingly, the stance finds resonance with the Taliban, who demolished the Buddhas of Bamiyan to illustrate their aversion to shirk. Shirk in Islam is a sin often roughly translated as idolatry, polytheism or association (with God).

Rabbani denied any intention to split off areas of West Bengal and Myanmar to establish Greater Bangladesh. He termed Pakistan’s treatment of Bangladeshis as cruel and asserted that Hefazat-e-Islam believes that the same won’t happen again if Islamic Law is enforced in the country. “The government is still new. Their work has not even started yet. We have to see for a while. We hope they will deliver justice and form an elected government after the elections,” he expressed about the interim government under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. He also pointed out that the organisation won’t participate in the electoral process.

He contended that the unrest in the country was due to the student protests and not an Islamic revolution. He claimed that the group doesn’t endorse Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, however, mentioned, “Jamaat is a political party. We do not do politics. I cannot say anything about them. We do not support Jamaat. As a citizen of Bangladesh, I say that banning someone is taking away his constitutional rights.”

Violence during PM Modi’s 2021 Bangladesh visit

On 26th March, the day of Bangladesh’s independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Dhaka for a two-day visit. The centennial of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Sheikh Hasina and the founder of the nation, also fell on the same day. Leaders of Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives were among the honoured guests during the function. However, 26th of March witnessed a protest by a group of Muslims at a city mosque following Friday prayers. Police deployed tear gas and used batons to scatter the gathering as soon as conflicts broke out. Afterwards, protests expanded to other regions of the nation, and on 28th March, Hefazat-e-Islam called for a statewide shutdown in retaliation for the attacks on people staging demonstrations against the Indian Prime minister’s arrival.

The agitators threw rocks and stones at security personnel. Meanwhile, hundreds of Hefazat-e-Islam members stormed a train and Hindu temples in eastern Bangladesh. Thousands of Islamist activists marched down streets across the country as several government buildings, including the land office and a government-sponsored music institution, were set on fire. Many Hindu temples were also targeted. Numerous people were hurt in Narayanganj, a neighbourhood just outside of Dhaka when protesters blocked roads with electric poles, wood and sandbags as authorities responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. In addition to blocking multiple roads, protestors in Dhaka set fire to and vandalized a few buses. The protest was against the alleged mistreatment of minorities, especially Muslims under PM Modi’s government which led to the deaths of at least 12 people.

Thousands of supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam stormed a Hindu village in Shalla upazila of Sunamgan district, the same year after a Hindu man shared a social media post criticizing the group’s joint-secretary general, Mawlana Mufti Mamunul, for his speech. A young Hindu man from Noagaon allegedly posted a critical Facebook post about Mamunul, who objected to Bangabandhu’s sculpture following the attack by extremists brandishing makeshift weapons. The outfit’s members from the Muslim-populated villages of Kashipur, Nachni, Chandipur and other nearby areas assembled in Noagaon hamlet and attacked the houses of the local Hindus after which 70-80 houses were damaged. Many local Hindus fled their homes to save themselves as the assailants entered the village, ransacked and looted many houses.

Hefazat-e-Islam’s Islamist roots

Hefazat-e-Islam, the largest Islamic organisation in Bangladesh was founded in 2010 in Chittagong by Shah Ahmad Shafi to protect Islam against purported anti-Islamic laws and end secularism. It soon became the centre of religious politics and radicalisation in Bangladesh. It is reportedly financed by doctrinaire Islamists in Saudi Arabia. The 2009 Women Development Policy draft, which suggested granting women equal inheritance rights, served as the impetus for the group’s formation which consists of Sunni zealots and their large network of madrasa supporters. The leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam have actively called for political and legal reforms despite the organization not being a political party. It demanded a revolution and the establishment of an Islamic state governed by Sharia Law in Bangladesh, openly opposing the country’s secular legal system.

Hefazat-e-Islam laid siege in Dhaka and proposed a 13-point plan in 2013, which included capital punishment for comments against Allah, Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, gender segregation, the release of Islamic scholars who were imprisoned and compulsory Islamic education from primary to higher secondary levels, among others. The government was compelled to surrender because of the group’s immense popularity.

Hefazat-e-Islam’s demands which even went so far as to arrest a few secular activists on the pretext that they were engaged in “anti-Islamic” activity have been met by the government. Dhaka ordered the removal of 17 poetry and stories by secular and non-Muslim authors from Bengali textbooks in 2017 and removed the Lady Justice statue from the Supreme Court the same year, in response to their demand. The next year, a bill was enacted by the government recognizing Dawra-e-Hadith, a prestigious madrassa under the authority of Hefazat-e-Islam, as having the same academic standing as a master’s degree in Islamic studies.

Shah Ahmad Shafi, the former head of Hafazat-e-Islam, was close to the Sheikh Hasina government, however, a more conservative group led by Junaid Babunagari took over the group after he died in 2020 after which the faction severed ties with the government through unofficial channels. The outfit often slammed Sheikh Hasina for her secular polity and demanded the implementation of Sharia Law in the country. The group claims to work to safeguard and propagate Islam, the Quran and the Hadith around the world. However, it is notorious for assaults on the minority communities including, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists and even Ahmadiyya (or Qadiani).

The group’s position on monuments and statues is among the most contentious parts of its aspects. It successfully campaigned in 2017 to have a statue of the Greek goddess Themis wearing a sari removed from the Supreme Court grounds because it hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims. The current leader of Hefajat-e-Islam, Amir Junayed Babunagari, reportedly has close ties to Pakistan ISI and Jamaat-e-Islami. He was also instrumental in the 2013 Dhaka siege. He got accepted at Pakistan’s Jamia Uloom-ul-Islamia at the age of twenty and studied there for four years including at Darululoom Karachi.

Bangladesh is currently under growing pressure from outfits like Hefazat-e-Islam that want to change the country’s identity. The rising gap between secular and religious forces in Bangladesh is reflected in the increasing recognition of Islam among its predominantly Muslim populace. Hefazat-e-Islam envisions a Bangladesh where justice is carried out under Islamic principles and Sharia Law is supreme which relegates non-Muslims to the status of second-class citizens and at the mercy of Muslim fundamentalists.

Despite Rabbani’s assertion that the organisation’s ultimate goal is to guarantee justice for everyone, including religious minorities, the group’s history, actions and discourse point to a dramatic departure from secular principles. Importantly, Bangladesh’s political landscape is rapidly shifting as groups including Hefazat-e-Islam promote a more religiously controlled country while the survival of Hindus and other minorities remains a grave concern as they are hunted down by radicals in the country.

US-made M4 rifles previously used by the Taliban or abandoned by American soldiers recovered during anti-terror ops in Jammu

Security forces have recovered more dangerous weapons during multiple operations conducted after a series of terror attacks in the Jammu region, officials reported on Monday.

Many of these weapons were previously used by Taliban terrorists or abandoned by American soldiers before they departed from Afghanistan, according to officials.

Security officials noted that the pattern of weapon recoveries indicates these arms are now being smuggled into Kashmir through Pakistan. Among these weapons are lethal US-made M4 carbine assault rifles, capable of firing 700-970 steel bullets per minute.

These steel bullets are more capable of piercing vehicle bodies than copper bullets. The M4’s effective firing range is 500-600 meters, with a maximum range of 3,600 meters.

Officials further stated that despite ongoing anti-terror operations, the recovery of M4 carbines from terrorists continues, as they are currently using either AK-47 rifles or M4 carbines.

They also mentioned that the first attack on army vehicles last month involved the use of an M4 carbine.

Sources within the security establishment in Jammu & Kashmir confirmed that the M4 carbine was first used in 2017 when security forces killed Talha Rashid Masood, the nephew of Jaish chief Masood Azhar, in Pulwama. Recently, the weapon has been used in terrorist attacks in Kathua, Reasi, and Doda.

Intelligence reports have revealed that two significant meetings took place in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in recent months, according to sources. “One meeting was convened by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander at the Pak Army Camp Tejin in PoK, while the other was led by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) leader Abdul Rauf. It was decided during these meetings to send as many weapons as possible to Kashmir,” an intelligence source stated, adding that over two dozen American-made M4 carbines were sent to the region.

The M4 Carbine Assault Rifle, developed by an American company in the 1980s, is still widely used by NATO forces. Security experts believe that M4 rifles, used by the Pakistani army, are being supplied to terrorists.

The M4 is a lightweight, gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed weapon. With over 500,000 units produced since 1987, the rifle is available in numerous variants, according to sources.

Intelligence sources also reported that the Pakistan Army and ISI have activated 15 new terrorist camps and more than 24 launching pads in PoK over the past month.

Despite the ongoing ceasefire along the border, Pakistan’s agencies are actively trying to push terrorists across the Line of Control (LoC). These terrorists are being kept in bunkers to avoid detection by the Indian Army, allowing them to hide and remain there for days before infiltrating, the sources added.

Kolkata doctor rape case: After parents allege ‘hurried cremation’, crematorium staff confirms ‘police push’

On Monday, 19th August, a shocking revelation allegedly exposing the Kolkata Police came to the fore in the rape and murder case of the 31-year-old doctor in the RG Kar Medical College. The father of the girl alleged that the Kolkata Police hurried the cremation process of the victim girl. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government’s handling of the incident.

“There were three bodies at the crematorium, but our daughter’s body was cremated first. The Chief Minister is talking about providing justice, but attempts are being…not satisfied with Mamata Banerjee and have refused to take any compensation,” the father of the girl was quoted as saying.

However, the same was confirmed by the crematorium staff while talking to the media. The manager of the crematorium where the girl was cremated was tracked down by the Times Now team who eventually exposed that it was the police who said that there was a chance of early decomposition of the dead body, demanding early cremation.

“There were a lot of policemen with the body (of the victim); the area had become very congested… We were told that there was a chance of the body getting decomposed… Police asked us if it can be done earlier (cremation of victim’s body),” the manager added. He also added that the parents of the girl also did not object to the request of the victim to get cremated before the two other dead bodies were already scheduled for cremation.

The incident has again raised questions against the Kolkata Police, accused by the BJP of hiding the evidence and crippling the investigation. Concerns have also been raised against CM Mamata Banerjee who is further accused of playing politics over the horrific incident.

It is important to note that the same Mamata Banerjee in the Hathras rape case that happened against a 19-year-old Dalit girl in the year 2020 had raised questions against alleged forced cremation on 30th September that year. As per the reports, the Hathras rape took place on 14th September, and the victim succumbed to her injuries on 29th September. It is believed that she was forcibly cremated at 2.25 am on 30th September without her parent’s consent in the police presence.

The family then had told the high court in an additional affidavit that they wanted to conduct the woman’s funeral in the morning, and wanted to bury the body instead of cremating it because she was unmarried. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee at that time also had chosen to play politics over the incident by claiming that the BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh and at the centre was deliberately torturing the victim and her family. She had accused the BJP of torturing Dalits, minority communities, and farmers.

Leading the protest march in 2020 against the incident, CM Banerjee had said that BJP was the biggest pandemic in the country. “The biggest pandemic is the BJP party. The BJP is a pandemic of atrocities and I will support every effort to stop these atrocities. What do you (BJP) think, your police will not let us meet the family. I can meet the family and you won’t even know. The daughter of Hathras is our daughter. If we are to brighten the country’s future, we have to stand beside Dalits and minority communities… Today, I am not a Hindu, I am a Dalit,” she was quoted as saying.

She had also claimed that the BJP had brought shame to the country.

However, it is crucial to note that CM Mamata Banerjee has always downplayed such gruesome incidents when happened in the state of West Bengal. In the current case, she is accused by the BJP of shielding the victims and then dramatizing her so-called stand in favour of the victim by conducting ‘protests’ for justice. The state authorities are also believed to have directed the Kolkata Police to ‘get the case settled and keep shut’.

Earlier, the state had resorted to slut-shaming, character assassination and even downplaying cases of sexual assault in West Bengal by labelling allegations as a ‘political conspiracy’. Another such example reported was that of the party’s reaction to the Park Street rape case.

An Anglo-Indian woman, by the name of Suzette Jordan, was raped in a moving car by five men on February 6, 2012, when she was returning home from Park Street in Kolkata. Soon after the news surfaced, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had absolved the accused of all charges. She had dubbed the incident as ‘shajano ghotona‘ (concocted incident) that was allegedly ‘designed to malign the government.’

While speaking to a news channel, TMC MP Kakoli Ghose Dhastidar cast aspersions on the character of the victim and also ruled out the rape angle. She stated, “If you are referring to the Park Street case, see that’s a different case altogether. It’s not at all a rape case. It was a misunderstanding between two people in a professional dealing between the lady and her client.”

At the same time, the then Transport Minister had also questioned the victim’s character and called the complaint fake. 3 years later in 2015, a Kolkata Court upheld the rape charges in the Park Street case and found accused Nasir Khan, Ruman Khan, and Sumit Bajaj guilty.

During another rape case in Burdwan’s Katwa in the same year, Mamata Banerjee again dismissed the rape allegations, even before the investigation was concluded. “A political party is doing all this, shouting rape. They are playing this drama. Harmader diye natok shajachhe jatey Banglar nam kharap hochhe (They are staging an act to give a bad name to West Bengal),” she was heard saying.

In 2013, during a debate in the West Bengal legislative assembly about the rising cases of rapes in the State, the CM had insinuated that it was due to an increase in the population of the State. She also blamed modernization, the increase in shopping malls, and multiplexes for rising rape cases.

RG Kar Medical College Rape and Murder Case

On 9th August, a semi-nude body of a female PG trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. It is a government-run hospital. Following the discovery, her father had said that she was raped and killed inside the hospital, and efforts were underway to “conceal the truth.”

The doctor had dinner with four of her coworkers at 2:30 am that night after seeing Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw event during the Paris Olympics. Afterwards, she went to the seminar hall to relax. The main accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, had access to every department as he worked at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital police outpost. He was not affiliated with the institution but often went there. CCTV evidence shows him entering the premises where the doctor was discovered, which led to his arrest on 10th August. He returned home after committing the horrifying act and slept in late. Roy also cleaned the outfit he wore to remove any evidence. The police recovered his bloodstained shoes during a search.

The Doctor was brutally tortured before she was suffocated to death, according to the post-mortem report. The four-page report stated that she had been strangled and that “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture” had resulted in serious wounds in her private parts.

The Doctor’s thyroid cartilage was also shattered. A source stated that the rape and murder occurred on 9th August most likely between 3 and 5 am. Her lips, fingers, left leg, and abdomen were all covered with injuries.

According to sources, the Doctor’s head was slammed against a wall or the floor resulting in severe injuries, and her mouth and nose were squeezed shut to stop the victim from shouting. The accused had reportedly beaten her up as she attempted to defend herself and resist. He then raped and killed her. According to the autopsy, the girl’s hands and face had cuts on them. Shards of glass from her spectacles broke and got into her eyes following an intense blow. The initial postmortem report ruled out suicide and stated that the trainee doctor had been sexually assaulted before being murdered.

Udaipur: Hindu student who was stabbed by his Muslim classmate succumbs to his injuries

Days after being stabbed by a Muslim classmate, the Hindu student involved in the Udaipur stabbing case succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

The victim, identified as Devraj, had been hospitalised following the incident and was receiving treatment. This update comes a day after the victim’s family claimed they were not allowed to visit him at the hospital. A large crowd, including the boy’s family, participated in a rally starting at Udaipur’s Mukherjee Nagar Chowk. The rally, which involved the chanting of slogans, made its way to MB Hospital, where they demanded that the family be permitted to see the boy.

The violent incident at a government school on Friday, August 16, sparked widespread communal unrest in the city. A Class 10 student allegedly stabbed another minor, triggering tensions that rapidly escalated. As news of the stabbing spread, a mob took to the streets, setting vehicles on fire and throwing stones, further exacerbating the situation. The reason behind the stabbing at the government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta remains unclear.

Communal tensions in Udaipur intensified as members of several Hindu groups protested the stabbing. The district administration responded swiftly, and on Saturday, with police support, used JCB machines to demolish the accused boy’s house. Officials stated that the house was constructed on forest land, which justified the demolition under existing regulations.

As tensions continued to rise in the evening, markets in Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, Chetak Circle, and surrounding areas were closed. Violent elements also attacked a shopping mall, damaging the glass gates of several shops. Hundreds of people gathered outside the government hospital, but the police eventually dispersed the crowd. In response to the growing unrest, the police imposed Section 144, banning the assembly of people to maintain order. Additionally, internet services were suspended in the city.

‘Mamata has fixed rate card for rape victims, wants to purchase witnesses: Council for parents of RG Kar hospital victim slams West Bengal CM

More than a week after a junior doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the counsel for the victim’s parents had lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

While speaking to ANI, advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya accused the TMC supremo of bribing families of rape victims into silence.

“You see, the role of the chief minister in the state of West Bengal is very condemnable. Wherever there is a rape, she wants to immediately get into the contact of the victim’s family, pay them money and then say everything is over,” he was heard saying.

Bhattacharya further stated that Mamata Banerjee had fixed-rate cards for rape victims and accused her of purchasing witnesses.

“Unfortunately, she has fixed up rate card for the rape victims. Under the law, they are entitled to get compensation but that should wait till the investigation is over. Her attempt is to purchase the witnesses. That attempt was made in this case also,” he emphasised.

“The parents of the victim girl refused it (money) because they didn’t want to be a part of the game played by the chief minister,” the counsel of the victim’s parents continued.

Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya lashes out at West Bengal police

He also slammed the ‘partisan’ conduct of the West Bengal police. “You see that police commissioner shouldn’t have done press conferences. Because we have seen that he is a complete failure in controlling the situation.

“The activities of the police even after the report of this death, according to me, was not satisfactory. When police, instead of discharging their duty, comes forward to defend and counter the public opinion, public views, shows that the police is not up to the mark,” he pointed out.

Besides being an advocate, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya is a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and a Rajya Sabha MP

What exactly happened to the girl on 9th August?

CCTV evidence shows him entering the premises where the doctor was discovered, that led to his arrest on 10th August.

According to sources, the Doctor’s head was slammed against a wall or the floor resulting in severe injuries and her mouth and nose were squeezed shut to stop the victim from shouting.
