By voting down the constitutional amendment, the opposition has not only stopped the increase in seats but has also stalled the redrawing of boundaries that would have identified the 33% of seats specifically for women.

Assam’s story cannot be understood through borrowed metaphors or distant ideological templates. It demands engagement with its history, its agreements, and its anxieties. Only then can the debate over delimitation move from rhetorical labeling to meaningful democratic dialogue.

The current 543 Lok Sabha seats and 250 Rajya Sabha seats are based on the census performed during 1971.
