Asif took the victim to Haridwar and pretended to convert to Hinduism to gain her trust. After this, he allegedly raped her under the pretext of marriage multiple times.
The incident came to light when a video went viral on social media where an event was being organised at the house of the victim after establishing a mazar. Hindu organisations took cognisance of the matter immediately and approached the police. Following the complaint by the Hindu organisations, the police swung into action and stopped the event.
A social media post purportedly published by the deceased victim Linesh Sahu stated that his wife Karuna and his in-laws were harassing and pressuring him to undergo religious conversion to Christianity.
