Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of playing in the 2019 World Cup for three weeks due to an injured thumb. Dhawan was hit on his left thumb while playing a rising delivery from Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. India won by 36 runs while playing against the defending champions at The Oval on Sunday.
Dhawan reportedly took precautionary scans yesterday to determine the extent of the injury on his swollen left thumb. Following which he was ruled out of the game. Despite the injury, Dhawan went on to score a match-winning 117 against Australia.
Dhawan would be missing the upcoming games against New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and England – which are all scheduled to be played in June.
In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul is most likely to open with Rohit Sharma. Dhawan’s possible replacement could be either be Shreyas Iyer or Rishabh Pant. After having played their second World Cup match on Sunday, India would be playing its next game on Thursday against New Zealand in Nottingham.
