Mayawati files petition to withdraw 1995 ‘Guesthouse Kaand’ case against Mulayam Singh Yadav

The 1995 case pertains to the infamous 'Guesthouse Kaand' in Lucknow which proved to be a significant moment in Uttar Pradesh politics and had pitched Mayawati and Mulayam as staunch rivals and bitter enemies for decades to come.

BSP supremo Mayawati has reportedly filed a petition in court to withdraw the 1995 cases concerning the infamous ‘Guesthouse Kaand’ against Mulayam Singh Yadav. As per reports, sources in the BSP have informed media over the withdrawal but there is yet to be an official confirmation over the issue.

The 1995 case pertains to the infamous ‘Guesthouse Kaand’ in Lucknow which proved to be a significant moment in Uttar Pradesh politics and had pitched Mayawati and Mulayam as staunch rivals and bitter enemies for decades to come.

In June 1995, when BSP had announced taking back its support from the Mulayam government, she was attacked by SP goons inside the Meerabai guesthouse in Lucknow. Reports say that the goons had beaten her up and had torn up her clothes when BJP MLA Bhahmadutt Dwivedi had to risk his life to fight with the goons and rescue Mayawati. Mayawati and Mulayam had been archenemies since then.

Ending their decades-old rivalry, Mayawati had made peace with the Yadav clan in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Desperate for relevance in the state and national politics, Mayawati’s BSP and Akhilesh Yadav’s SP had come together to announce an alliance for the Lok Sabha elections. However, the alliance too failed to work and after miserably failing to stop the BJP juggernaut, both parties had parted ways again.

As per a report in the Hindustan Times, BSP general secretary SC Mishra has confirmed that Mayawati had withdrawn the cases against Mulayam Singh Yadav. However, he refused to share any more details.

Another BSP leader has reportedly stated that in January 2019, when the parties had come together, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had urged Mayawati to withdraw the cases against his father.
