32 crore Aadhaar numbers connected to voter IDs, says Chief Election Commissioner

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) OP Rawat revealed that 32 crore Aadhaar numbers have been connected to voter IDs in the country. He informed that EC would ensure that the same would be done to rest of the 54.5 crore voter IDs after Supreme court gave it verdict in an ongoing case. The 32 crore voter IDs were seeded in a matter of 3 months according to the CEC.

The CEC was speaking at the 14th national conference organised by Association for Democratic Rights (ADR) in Bengaluru.

The ongoing efforts were stalled by a petition filed by Mathew Thomas questioning the validity of Aadhaar act. A total of 22 cases have been referred to the Supreme Court regarding Aadhar. The petitioner has alleged that the Aadhar would violate the privacy of the citizens.

This will be examined in depth by the Supreme Court after it had ruled that privacy is a fundamental right under the constitution in August 2017. The central government is also working on a data protection law to protect the citizens.
