‘Comedian’ Kunal Kamra is apparently more dejected after BJP’s landslide victory in the Gujarat state assembly elections rather than the defeated political parties like Congress and AAP. Taking a dig at BJP’s thumping win in Gujarat, Kamra tweeted that he will be able to perform in certain cities of Gujarat only in his next life.

“Performing in Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, Rajkot & Vapi in my next life…” tweeted Kamra.

Through this tweet, he essentially signalled that the people of Gujarat will repeat the same verdict to elect such a government for a lifetime which will strengthen the forces that ‘allegedly crush the voices of dissent and the so-called freedom of speech’ Kunal Kamra pretends to bat for. The ‘comedian’ posted the tweet implying that people in the BJP-ruled states do not allow him to perform, especially after many of his shows were cancelled after protests over Hinduphobic jokes made during such stand-up comedy gigs.

But Twitter users roasted Kunal Kamra with their befitting replies to his tweet.

Responding to Kamra, a Twitter user said, “Perform in ‘Jannat’ for hoors. Don’t bother taking rebirth in India.”

Another Twitter account Dhoiboi replied, “Are next life me bhi rehne de yaar.” It means “hey friend, don’t perform in the next life too.”

Swati wrote in her reply, “Aah thank god. Gujarat main jarurat nahi tum jaise logo ki. the meltdown is so entertaining.” It means people like you are not needed in Gujarat.

Savitri Mumukshu brought a new angle in her roasting reply. She wrote, “This tweet will do more to drive huge investment in Gujarat than the Statue of Unity.”

another Twitter user JK posted, “Tere jitne bhi birth honge Gujarat me to BJP ki government hogi.” It means “Take whatever the number of rebirths, there will be a BJP government in Gujarat.”

BJP registered a landslide victory in the Gujarat state assembly elections of 2022. The party broke its past record of 127 seats that it made in 2002. It is about to break the 149-seats record of Madhavsinh Solanki which the Congress leader had set in 1985.

Kunal Kamra’s shows cancelled after protests over Hinduphobic content

Earlier this year, a bar in Gurgaon cancelled a show by Kunal Kamra which was scheduled to be held on September 17 and 18.

Studio Xo Bar in sector 29 in Gurgaon informed that they had cancelled Kunal Kamra’s show titled Kunal Kamra Live, after members of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad protested against the scheduled show. The members of the organisations had asked the management of the bar to cancel the show, promising to hold protests outside the bar if they went ahead with the show. The organisations had also written to the administration seeking to cancel the show. Kunal Kamra’s shows are facing opposition from Hindu organisations because of his jokes insulting Hindu gods.

In December 2021, Kamra’s shows in Bengaluru were called off. The ‘comedian’ claimed that the show organisers did not get permission to accommodate 45 people in a venue that could seat more. While Kamra did not specify, the restriction could be likely due to COVID protocol amid the looming threat of the third wave and the ominous rise of the omicron variant at that time.

The Wire ombudsperson Pamela Philipose has an extended meltdown as BJP registers a historic win in Gujarat: Details

With the BJP’s inevitable march to power in Gujarat, ombudsperson of the ultra-leftist news portal The Wire, headed by US citizen Siddharth Varadarajan, Pamela Philipose, went on a deranged rant against Gujaratis. The ‘journalist’ chastised Gujaratis for voting for the BJP in a series of tweets posted on December 8, Thursday.

“Dear Gujarat, rapists and murderers may be garlanded, anaemia levels may remain high, the poorest may be swept away in vanity beautification, but the BJP and its government is immutable,” tweeted Pamela Philipose, shedding any pretence of political neutrality and objectivity that she and her ilk routinely lean on to pass off their convictions as intellectual insights.

Her discontent with the BJP’s epoch-making victory seemed so intense that she sent out numerous angry tweets directed at the people of Gujarat. “Dear Gujarat…Morbi bridge may collapse, floods may ruin towns, rivers may run toxic, land may get grabbed by mafia elements, but the BJP and is safe and well,” she wrote in another tweet.

The disgruntled ‘journalist’ further tweeted, “Dear Gujarat…At least the BJP here will not have to launch Operation Lotus in order to come to power.”

In yet another hateful tweet, she cursed the Gujaratis for choosing the saffron party. “Dear Gujarat…you have proved yet again that electoral democracy does not have a chance against Money, Media and Muscle power,” tweeted The Wire employee.

For those who are unfamiliar with Pamela Philipose, she was recently in the spotlight following the Meta-Wire fiasco when she opened up about the issue after several netizens questioned her views.

Pamela weighed in on the controversy after the ultra-leftist news portal The Wire withdrew its series of reports claiming that BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya had some superpowers to remove posts from Meta-owned Instagram after the reports were found to be fake.

The ombudsperson, also known as public editor or reader’s editor, is supposed to work with The Wire‘s editorial structure, and the portal had said that the position was created to add a new layer of transparency and accountability to their editorial functioning. After remaining silent on the controversy for days on end, Pamela Philipose finally opened up on the issue and tried to downplay the publication’s fiasco over the matter.

While Pamela Philipose refrained from taking a clear stand, she admitted that The Wire committed some mistakes. But she did not directly admit that The Wire or its sources fabricated evidence, and instead claimed that the investigation conducted by The Wire is prima facie a significant one. She also made several allegations against Meta.

Besides, the ombudsperson, who is supposed to be an independent authority, also fulminated against called OpIndia over its extensive coverage of The Wire’s fiasco over its Meta and Tek Fog stories.

Confident that it was getting close to the magic number in Gujarat, the Congress party had planned to transport its MLAs to Rajasthan to avoid what it called ‘Operation Lotus,’ an alleged attempt by the BJP to poach its MLAs. However, as the results of the Gujarat Assembly elections began to trickle in today (December 8, Thursday), the grand old party is decimated to its lowest-ever tally of seats in Gujarat this year.

In Gujarat, the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party is set to bag 156 seats, while the Congress party is winning 17 seats.

Desh Gujarat reported on Wednesday that the top State Congress leaders, including party chief Jagdish Thakor, State party in-charge Raghu Shamara, and others, met at the State party headquarters in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad and decided to relocate newly elected Congress MLAs to party-ruled neighbouring State Rajasthan after their election so that the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) cannot poach them if the BJP is short in numbers.

Even though all exit polls showed a clear BJP victory by a comfortable to large margin, State Congress officials were certain that the party’s tally will be higher than in 2017. Congress believed that BJP will not cross the halfway mark and will need the support of other parties to form the government. The party delegated zone-wise responsibilities to various leaders and instructed them to keep in touch with the party’s winning candidate and mobilise them to Rajasthan when called upon.

Congress struggles to gain even a tenth of a seat in Gujarat

To their disappointment, Congress is now battling to gain even a tenth of a seat in the state. According to recent reports, the BJP is anticipated to win 156 seats based on current trends and results that have already been reported. Congress, on the other hand, is expected to win only 17 of the 182 seats, plummeting below 10% of the total seats.

This year’s figures are far lower than what the Congress party attained in 2017, which, while the Congress lost to the BJP, provided the party and its adherents with an excuse to elevate Rahul Gandhi to a pedestal.

In 2017, the party claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s efforts paved the way for the party, which increased its tally of 61 seats from the previous assembly elections to 77. The party welcomed Rahul Gandhi as a mature leader and promptly handed over the responsibility of the national president to him.

This year, however, one wonders what the great old party’s members will have to say, as Rahul Gandhi addressed only two rallies, one in Surat and the other in Rajkot. Rahul visited Gujarat in the first week of September, only two days before embarking on his cross-country march from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. Not just that, the question is why did his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, which was in the neighbourhood, skip Gujarat.

Congress planned to shift Himachal MLAs also to Rajasthan

Not just Gujarat MLAs, the Congress party had planned to shift its newly elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh also to Rajasthan, for the same reason, to prevent alleged poaching by BJP. However, that plan was also dropped, although it was due to the completely opposite reason. While Himachal Pradesh election results were anticipated to be close, Congress actually won a comfortable majority. The party has won 40 seats in the 68-member house, with the ruling BJP getting 25 seats. This means, Congress is forming the government and there is no fear of poaching by BJP. As a result, Congress party cancelled the plan to shift their Himachal MLAs to Congress-ruled Rajasthan, and has called them to Chandigarh instead to discuss about the government formation.

On Thursday, December 8, for the first time, the Rampur Sadar assembly seat has been won by a Hindu candidate. BJP candidate Akash Saxena inflicted a crushing defeat on Samajwadi Party candidate Mohammed Asim Raja, breaching the stronghold of SP’s controversial leader Azam Khan. The historic feat has been achieved after 70 years and 20 assembly elections.

Akash Saxena received 80964 votes, accounting for 61.95% of the total votes cast. Asim Raja of the SP had to settle for 47262 votes.

After the results were announced, the Samajwadi candidate blamed the Rampur police for his defeat. While speaking to local media, Asim Raja claimed that 70% votes were stolen in the bypoll. He alleged that the Rampur police forcibly stopped people from voting. “Elections were held in Rampur on December 5, and we had previously stated that elections had not taken place in Rampur,” he said. 

The SP candidate also accused police of booth capturing. “Police did not allow Rampur residents to vote in any of the city’s 200 polling stations. Booths have been looted. Only 20% of the vote was cast in 252 polling places. All of the booths outside of the city and village were captured. There has been 50-70-80% voting. All the booths were captured. 2.25 lakh voters were denied the right to vote. Only 45,000 votes were cast, and many of them were cast by police officers. The counting has begun. However, in the city where the SP had a stronghold, where the total vote was 70%, they were not allowed to vote,” Asim Raja claimed.

However, no such cases have been reported and elections were held peacefully.

Notably, Bypoll on the Rampur Sadar seat was necessitated after Azam Khan was sentenced to three years in jail in a hate speech case, and consequently disqualified as MLA. Due to his conviction, Azam Khan cannot contest elections for the next 6 years.

TMC leader Saket Gokhale granted bail by Ahmedabad court in fake news case, arrested again by police after release

On Thursday, 8th December 2022, Trinamool Congress Party’s leader Saket Gokhale was granted regular bail by a Gujarat Magistrate Court. The former ‘RTI activist’ was arrested by the Gujarat police over his tweet spreading fake news about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Morbi visit. Earlier, on Tuesday (December 7), an Ahmedabad court had remanded Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Saket Gokhale to two-day police custody.

TMC leader and MP Derek O’Brien tweeted and shared this information. He wrote, “National spokesperson of Trinamool Congress Party, the fearless Saket Gokhale has been granted bail mins ago in Ahmedabad. Thank you to the legal team led by Advocate Majeed Memon ex-Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. Inspired by Mamata Banerjee, all of us are always ready to fight the good fight.”

Gokhale was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Jaipur, Rajasthan, by officials from the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell and brought to Ahmedabad in the afternoon, where he was formally arrested.

Notably, Gokhale had shared a fabricated news report about an RTI query and its response that does not exist. He had claimed that ₹30 crore was spent on PM Modi’s Morbi visit, sharing a news clipping from an unnamed Gujarati newspaper, which was claimed to be Gujarat Samachar. But the government has said that it is fabricated and no such report was published and there is no such RTI reply. Moreover, Gujarat Samachar also clarified that they have not published such a report.

While Saket Gokhale was arrested for posting fake news and he has been granted bail as per regular legal procedure, TMC is trying to make a hero out of him. The party is firmly standing behind him, with Derek O’Brien calling him ‘fearless’. However, as Derek O’Brien himself regularly post fake news on social media, it is no wonder that he thinks this is a legitimate tool in politics.

Update: Later in the day, Saket Gokhale was reportedly arrested by Morbi Police immediately after he was released by Ahmedabad police as per the bail order. Another case was registered against him for the fake tweet in Morbi, and accordingly, Morbi police detained him.

Derek O’Brien tweeted to confirm the development, calling it a shocker. He said that Saket was arrested again at 8.45 PM by police after he had come out of the Cyber Police Station in Ahmedabad. He alleged that police arrested him without any warrant and took him to an unknown destination.

The MP also informed that a delegation of TMC MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will visit Gujarat to rescue Saket Gokhale.

A video also has emerged showing Saket arguing with police at the police station premises, reportedly moments before he was arrested.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi arrived in Jaipur on Thursday as the party’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is passing through Rajasthan, party leaders said.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is on a two-day tour of Rajasthan, and after arriving at Jaipur airport on Thursday afternoon, she flew to Sawai Madhopur in a helicopter.

She will be staying in the Sher Bagh Hotel of Ranthambhore, and her birthday will be celebrated there on Friday, they said.

Upon arrival, Sonia Gandhi was welcomed by administration and police department officials.

Her daughter and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also reached Sawai Madhopur via road and joined her mother, they said.

“They will be staying in Ranthambhore, and celebrate Sonia Gandhi’s birthday on December 9,” party leaders said.

The local administration has made all possible arrangements to ensure the safety of Sonia Gandhi and her family.

Strikes by lawyers one of the reasons why courts are burdened with pending cases, Salman Khurshid seeks solution

‘Hadtaal-pe-Hadtaal’ by lawyers, across the courts of India, is one of the three primary causes of ‘Tareekh-pe-Tareekh’ in five crore pending cases clogging the justice system. Senior Advocate, Salman Khurshid, along with moderator Manoj Raghuvanshi, laboured through a grilling online RoundTable discussion on ‘Khul Ke’ last Sunday, in a determined bid to find a solution to the vexed issue of lawyer strikes.  

Although the Supreme Court has repeatedly pronounced that lawyers cannot go on strike, these pronouncements have not been successful in preventing these ‘hadtaals’ which have become a widespread bane for crores of innocent Indians suffering delay (meaning denial) for justice. Exactly ten days before this RoundTable conversation, lawyers had struck work in Gujarat, Telangana and Uttarakhand.

It was pointed out to Salman Khurshid that several courts spread across three districts of what is now Uttarakhand had resorted to a 35-year long strike by lawyers on every working Saturday. Also that the Uttarakhand High Court had dubbed these strikes illegal.

When the matter was brought before the Supreme Court, it had commented very strongly, noting that the strikes were held on “flimsy” grounds, ranging from an earthquake in Nepal, a bomb blast at a school in Pakistan, to amending the constitution of Sri Lanka. The Supreme Court had decried it as a “joke”, and ratified the High Court’s decision that the strikes were illegal.

Salman Khurshid regretted that sometimes the strikes turn violent, in which members of the bar who want to work are “roughed up”.  

The lawyer disclosed in the RoundTable discussion that it has been recommended many times by the Court that the Bar Association should have a Grievance Committee which should examine and approve every proposal of the Bar Associations to conduct a strike, but these Grievance Committees need to be “independent’, and not consist of “yes-men” who will blindly approve every request for a strike.  

The eminent advocate wondered if these strikes happened because some of “our colleagues” don’t want to work, and just “look for excuses”.  Salman Khurshid revealed that “no system” has been made to ensure that these strikes don’t happen.  

Although the High Courts and Supreme Court have sent some lawyers to jail for “contempt”, but when it involves hundreds or thousands of lawyers, the judges find it hard to deal with the situation, Khurshid explained. The courts can’t “send 5,000 lawyers to jail for contempt”, emphasised the Panellist. 

Salman Khurshid clarified that there is “legal culture” with which the lawyers can show their protest by wearing a “black band”, or start work an hour “late”, but the effort should be to not let the “critical cases” get affected. 

In the RoundTable discussion, Salman Khurshid reiterated the words of the Chief Justice of India, D. Y. Chandrachud, that the real victims of these strikes are neither the judges, nor the lawyers, but the innocent “clients” who are very often extremely poor. In fact, the renowned lawyer added, that in addition to the innocent people, even the “system of justice becomes a victim”.  

Salman Khurshid found merit in one particular suggestion during the Khul Ke RoundTable discussion on how to resolve the tangle of strikes. The difficulty of the Supreme Court in not being able to hold hundreds or thousands of lawyers responsible can be solved by just narrowing down the responsibility to two individuals: the bar functionary who signs the proposal for a strike and the reader or “peshkar” of the District Judge who “receives” the proposal. Salman agreed, but immediately added a rider that things are not always black and white. Sometimes there are “grey” areas.

Salman Khurshid concluded the online RoundTable discussion by suggesting that all these “issues” raised in the programme ‘Tareekh-pe-Tareekh’ should be thoroughly “examined” by a committee consisting of old judges, new judges, lawyers and also “you people” (meaning the Khul Ke viewers), and a solution should be found.

On Wednesday, the search engine giant Google released a list of what Indians searched for the most in the year 2022. The list was released by Google in nine categories which included entertainment, stars, movies, recipes, and ‘what is’ and ‘how-to’ questions as well. Notably, the central government’s four-year recruiting program ‘Agnipath Scheme’ for the armed forces, which had sparked widespread protests, has climbed to the forefront of India’s most Googled phrases in the ‘what is’ category.

According to the Google trends list, Indians searched the most for the ‘What is Agnipath Scheme’ in the year 2022. The Agninpath scheme, also known as the Agnipath Yojana, is a central government initiative in which young soldiers known as ‘Agniveers’ are recruited to the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy for four years, with just 25 percent of the total qualifying for permanent jobs. The scheme was launched by the government to encourage the youth to take part in the armed forces.

Thousands of individuals across the country demonstrated after the central government implemented the Agnipath Scheme, demanding that some clauses of the scheme be reversed. Protests were staged in states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, among others. However, the central government made no changes to the scheme, which was introduced on June 14, 2022.

Apart from the Agnipath Scheme, Indians also seem to have searched for Article 370, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Non-Fungible Token (NFT), and Popular Front of India (PFI) in the ‘What is’ category. India probably searched for NATO during the Russia-Ukraine war and for PFI after the Indian government imposed a ban on the organization and its affiliates for five years citing its terror links and subversive activities across the country. The ban on the PFI on September 28, came after two rounds of searches by the NIA in a multi-agency investigation against the organization for sponsoring terror operations in the nation.

Interestingly, the Google trends list also revealed that Indians tried to attain a lot of information about Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s film named ‘The Kashmir Files’ which received huge critical and popular acclaim in India. The film stood at the third position in the top searched Movies category after Brahmastra and KGF: Chapter 2.

Released on March 11 this year, The Kashmir Files proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year when regular Bollywood movies were falling flat at the box office one after the other. Starring Anupam Kher, Darshan Pathak, Mithun Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi in the lead roles the Vivek Agnihotri directorial earned around Rs 337.23 crore, making it the first Hindi film to cross the Rs 300 crore club during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kashmir Files is based on the Kashmiri Hindu genocide perpetrated in the valley in the late 1980s, and 1990s where Islamist terrorists backed by Pakistan unleashed terror upon Kashmiri Hindus leaving lakhs homeless and dead. The film depicts incidents inspired by real life where Kashmiri Hindus were targeted because of their religious identity and were brutally raped, murdered, and driven out of their homes.

In general searches, the Indian Premier League topped the chart, which is not a surprise in cricket-crazy India. CoWIN was the second-most searched term, the portal for Covid-19 vaccine. Rest 3 in the top 5 were all related to sports, FIFA World Cup, Asia Cup, and ICC T20 World Cup.

The Covid-19 vaccine also topped the how-to search category, as most people Googled to know how to Download the vaccination certificate in this category. Similarly, ‘Covid vaccine near me’ was the most searched term in the near me category, which returns the results in Google Maps.

Further, the most searched personalities by Indians in 2022 are former BJP Spokesperson Nupur Sharma, India’s President Droupadi Murmu, Britain’s newly elected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Lalit Modi, Sushmita Sen, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and American actress Amber Heard. The searches have a lot to do with the series of events that changed the lives of these ‘most searched personalities’ drastically.

Nupur Sharma was searched most in June this year after she uttered alleged blasphemous remarks

Former BJP Spokesperson Nupur Sharma was suspended by the party in June this year after she was accused by the Islamists of uttering alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Mohammed. She received death threats from several Islamic countries who also criticized her for her alleged blasphemous remarks. Her remarks in a live TV debate were selectively chosen and made viral by Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair who also accused her of ‘insulting’ the Prophet.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also made it to the list after he rebelled against the former state government led by Uddhav Thackeray and joined hands with BJP to form a new government in the state. Shinde back in June had stated that former CM Uddhav Thackeray had gone far away from Hindutva and the principles of former Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. Shinde took oath as Maharashtra’s new CM on June 30 this year.

Notably, Murmu and Sunak were searched most by Indians probably after they were elected as India’s President and Britain’s new Prime Minister respectively. Reports meanwhile mentioned that actress Sushmita Sen and businessman Lalit Modi made it to the top of the Google search list despite staying away from mainstream cinema for quite some time. The two created a virtual storm after Modi revealed that he was in a relationship with the actress. The actress was then accused of being a ‘gold digger’.

On the news events front, the Indians happened to search the most about the death of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, Sidhu Moosewala, Queen Elizabeth, Bappi Lahri, KK, and Shane Warne. People also searched about the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and Russia Ukraine War.

Meanwhile, the food-loving Indians googled the recipes of Paneer Pasanda followed by Modak, Malai Kofta, Pizza Margherita, Pancakes, Paneer Bhurji and Anarase. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge credits Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ for the party win in Himachal Pradesh

As Congress was poised to form government in Himachal Pradesh according to the results and trends of the counting of votes, party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra has contributed in party’s performance in the hill state.

“We have won the Himachal elections. I want to thank the people, our workers and leaders as due to their efforts this result has come. I want to thank Priyanka Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra also helped us with this. Sonia Gandhi’s blessings are also with us,” Kharge told reporters.

“Our observers and in-charge secretaries are going there (Himachal Pradesh) and they will decide when to meet Governor and call a meeting of (Congress MLAs),” said the Congress chief.

On Gujarat results, he said the party accepts defeat and congratulates those who won. “In a democracy, victory and defeat are not permanent. We will continue to fight for the people. We will introspect and keep fighting for people,” he added.

In Himachal Pradesh, Congress is slated to win 39 of 68 seats. According to Election Commission, Congress has won 31 seats and is leading in eight. Further, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 17 seats while leading in nine seats. Independents have won three seats and AAP failed to open its account in the state. The halfway mark in the 68-seat Himachal Assembly is 35.

The BJP is poised to break all records of electoral performance in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and is set to get the highest number of seats won by a political party in the state’s history. Further in Gujarat, BJP has won 102 seats and leads in 54 seats. Congress won eight seats and leads in nine seats. Aam Aadmi Party has won four seats and is leading in one seat. Samajwadi Party (SP) won one seat. The halfway mark to form government in Gujarat is 92.

Results of the by-elections held for 6 assembly seats in 5 states and the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh are out. While the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress secured 2 assembly seats each, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Biju Janata Dal managed to win 1 seat each in various states.

Samajwadi Party candidate Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat which was vacant after Mulayam Singh Yadav’s demise earlier this year.

Assembly by-elections in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan

Kedar Prasad Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Kurhani assembly seat of Bihar. He received 76648 votes and defeated Janata Dal (United) candidate Manoj Kushwaha by 3649 votes. Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party’s candidate Neelabh Kumar is at number three.

In Chhattisgarh, the by-election for the Bhanupratappur assembly seat was held. Congress candidate Savitri Manoj Mandavi won this seat. She got 65327 votes. She defeated the BJP candidate Bramhanand Netam who got 44229 votes. The victory margin was 21171.

In Odisha, the Padampur assembly constituency underwent a by-election. Biju Janata Dal candidate Barsha Singh Bariha secured 104183 votes here which accounts for more than 57% of the votes. She defeated Pradeep Purohit of the BJP who got 68887 votes amounting to more than 37% of the total votes.

By-polls were conducted for the Sardarshahar assembly seat of Rajasthan where Congress candidate Anil Kumar Sharma defeated the BJP candidate Ashok Kumar in a straight fight. While Sharma got 91357 votes, Ashok Kumar received 64505 votes. So, Anil Kumar Sharma won by a margin of 26852 votes.

By-elections in UP

By-elections were held on two seats in Uttar Pradesh. The Rampur assembly seat was more discussed in the news because it is the stronghold of the Samajwadi Party’s controversial leader Azam Khan. BJP candidate Akash Saxena defeated Samajwadi Party candidate Mohammed Asim Raja. Akash Saxena got 66382 votes which make up a whopping 58.48% of the total votes cast. Asim Raja of SP had to be content with 45063 votes.

Khatauli was the other assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh where the by-elections took place. Madan Bhaiya of Rashtriya Lok Dal emerged as the winning candidate for this seat. He received 86478 votes which are 52.96% of the total votes cast. He defeated Rajkumari of the BJP by 16979 votes.

Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency by-polls

Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency has traditionally been a strong fortress of the Samajwadi Party. Party’s founder Mulayam Singh Yadav would often prefer this constituency. The by-polls were held here after his demise. Samajwadi Party fielded the late leader’s daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav in this seat. There was a clear-cut sympathy wave in support of the SP candidate. She got 617625 votes. In terms of percentage, she secured 64.08% votes. She defeated BJP candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya by a margin of 288461 votes.
