Delhi police arrest former Congress MLA Asif Mohammed Khan for assaulting SDMC employees who had removed unauthorised Congress banners

On Saturday (November 27), the Delhi police arrested former Congress MLA (Okhla) Asif Mohammed Khan for assaulting four on-duty SDMC (South Delhi Municipal Corporation) workers in the Shaheen Bagh area. The development came a day after the video of the assault went viral on social media.

The video of the incident was shared on Twitter by journalist Wasim Akram Tyagi. In a tweet, he wrote, “Most educated Muslims in North India live in Okhla. Institutions such as Jamia Millia Islamia are located here Look at the misfortune of the people here. They have got an ignorant leader. He is the former MLA of Okhla and the brother of Kerala Governor.”

Asif Mohammed Khan was seen thrashing four SDMC employees with a stick. He had also forced them to bend down and hold their ears with their hands, in the position known as becoming Murga. “Murga ban (Squat on the ground like chicken),” he and his followers yelled at the workers. The ex-Congress MLA was seen hurling choicest of expletives at the municipal workers for removing a political banner of the party, on the supposed instructions of the Aam Aadmi Party.

However, Asif Mohammed Khan said that he didn’t know that the persons he assaulted are municipal workers, and said that he punished them for removing party banners. He alleged that hoardings of a local AAP MLA and municipal corporations remained untouched, but hoardings of the Congress party in Okhla area are immediately removed.  “I saw that some men were removing Congress party hoardings and posters near my home in Okhla. When I questioned why they never removed posters and hoardings of other parties they did not answer. I just taught them a lesson. I have no idea who they were,” Khan said.

A senior SDMC official said that the persons assaulted by the Congress leader are employees of the civic body. The official said that the matter has been discussed with deputy commissioner Central Zone, and appropriate legal action is being taken by Zonal Authorities.

The Delhi police took cognisance of the matter after it came to light. While responding to the tweet by journalist Wasim Akram Tyagi, Delhi Police said, “The matter has been taken cognizance of. Concerned officials have been directed to take appropriate action.”

A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 34 (acts done by several people min furtherance of common intention), 352 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from doing his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servants from discharging their duties). It was based on a complaint by MCD Inspector (Lajpat Nagar) Ram Kishore.

Godhra train carnage convict Haji Bilal dies of ailments at Vadodara hospital

Bilal Ismail Abdul Majid alias Haji Bilal (61), who was held guilty of the carnage of 59 innocent Ram Bhakta Hindus in 2002 at Godhra in Gujarat died on November 26 at Vadodara’s SSG hospital.

Bilal was serving life imprisonment at Vadodara Central Jail after he was convicted of involvement in the Godhra massacre. He was under treatment for an aliment for over four years. On November 22, his health deteriorated and he was rushed to SSG hospital. He was kept on oxygen support but he died during treatment. After the post-mortem, police handed over the body to his family. Owing to his poor health, he was granted parole earlier, and had returned to jail after the parole term was over.

Assistant Commissioner of Police A V Rajgor said that Bilal was suffering from a heart ailment and regular hypertension.

Bilal was among 11 Muslims who were awarded the death penalty by a special court of Judge PR Patel in Ahmedabad in March 2011, in the Godhra train carnage. Later on, their sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat high court. Another 20 people were sentenced to life imprisonment in the case.

The court had described them as the ‘core committee’ that had planned the mass murder of 59 Hindus on February 27, 2002, when they were returning from Ayodhya in the Sabarmati Express.

At Godhra in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat, the mob comprising over a thousand Islamic fanatics targeted coach number S6 of Sabarmati Express in which karsevaks were travelling. The mob surrounded the coach, poured fuel on it and set it on fire, leading to the tragic death of the karsevaks. The incident had triggered the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

Besides murder and conspiracy, Bilal was held guilty for obstructing firefighters from reaching to burning coach that possibility could have saved lives.

The court had called this case rarest of the rare. Even Gujarat government-appointed inquiry commission, headed by Justice Nanavati, had concluded train burning was the result of a pre-planned conspiracy and not an accident.

In October 2017, the division bench of Justices A.S. Dave and G.R. Udhwani of Gujarat High Court commuted their death sentence to life imprisonment.

While the Covid 19 cases were declining across the world a new variant of the coronavirus labelled as ‘Omicron’ (B.1.1.529) has left health experts and markets worried. The World Health Organization (WHO) which named this variant Omicron has categorized it as a variant of concern stating that it could pose a greater risk than the Delta variant.

But the naming of this variant by the WHO has kicked-off a controversy with allegations of WHO pandering to China surfacing.

WHO has been using Greek alphabets to name new variants of COVID-19 for easy identification and understanding among the non-scientific groups. Going by this norm, Nu and Xi are the next letters in the Greek alphabet that should have been used to name a variant, that has now been named Omicron. Questions are now being raised as to why WHO decided to skip the letters Nu and Xi.

It is being theorised that had WHO named the variant Nu, any additional variant would then have to be called Xi, which happens to be the name of China’s President. “The concern is that WHO is again avoiding any discomfort for the Chinese government. So they named it Omicron,” said Jonathan Truley, American attorney and legal scholar.

WHO has not provided an explanation for skipping Nu and Xi but New York Post has speculated a few reasons. Nu was skipped apparently to avoid confusion with the word “new.” Xi was skipped because it is written similarity to the name of Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

People and policymakers criticised WHO its blatant appeasement of China

“If the WHO is this scared of the Chinese Communist Party, how can they be trusted to call them out the next time they’re trying to cover up a catastrophic global pandemic?” said Ted Cruz who is the senator of Texas.

Cruz was responding to senior British journalist Paul Nuki who claimed WHO source confirmed to him that the letters Nu and Xi of the Greek alphabet were deliberately avoided. He said Nu was skipped to avoid confusion with the word “new” and Xi had been skipped to avoid ‘stigmatising a region’. Nuki commented that all pandemics were inherently political.

WHO has a policy not to name any variant on the name of any country and region. Jonathan Turley was quick to point out that Xi has not attended region status.

Even distinguished health experts like Martin Kulldorff of Harvard Medical School were left wondering about the naming of the new variant by WHO echoing what Paul Nuki said.

“News of new Nu variant, but WHO is jumping the alphabet to call it Omicron, so they can avoid Xi,” Martin Kulldorff .

American linguist and lexicographer Benjamin Zimmer who is also the contributing editor for The Atlantic poked fun at WHO.

WHO has long been accused of protecting China even if Wuhan was the origin of Covid 19. The then-American President Donald Trump had even suspended funding to WHO for playing in the hands of China even if the world faced such a huge disaster.

Senior Chinese government official Hu Binchen has been elected to the Interpol Executive Committee during the elections that were held in Turkey during the ongoing 89th General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL). It may be noted here that Hu Binchen is a Deputy Director General at China’s Ministry of Public Security, that leads Operation Fox Hunt in China.

“Mr Binchen HU of China and Mr Praveen SINHA of India have been elected to the posts of Delegate for Asia (3-yr term),” Interpol said in a tweet.

The election of Hu Binchen, a Deputy Director General at China’s Ministry of Public Security, to the Interpol Executive Committee has sparked profound concerns among experts. In a statement, the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) stated that the Chinese government has routinely utilised the Interpol Red Notice to persecute dissidents in exile. IPAC added that the appointment of Hu Binchen would further embolden the Chinese government to use Interpol as a tool for its authoritarian policies globally.

“Hu’s election gives the PRC government a green light to continue using Interpol as a vehicle for its repressive policies globally and places thousands of Hong Konger, Uyghur, Tibetan, Taiwanese and Chinese dissidents living abroad at even graver risk,” IPAC said.

“The PRC cannot be allowed to continue its long arm policing abroad. In light of these abuses, we reiterate our call for all governments to revoke extradition treaties with the PRC and Hong Kong. Activists, dissidents and exiles living abroad must be protected from harassment and intimidation from the PRC authorities,” the statement added.

Earlier, as many as 40 human right activists had also shot off a letter to the Interpol Member States warning that Hu Binchen’s election would have severe ramifications on the safety and wellbeing of Chinese, Hong Kongers, Taiwanese and Chinese human rights activists living outside China as well as Tibetan and Uyghur diasporas.

Besides, 50 legislators from 20 countries, who are part of the IPAC had written a joint letter to their governments raising alarm at China’s moves to gain influence over the Interpol. Referring to the recent attempts by the Chinese government to use the Interpol Red Notice system to target Uyghur activists living in exile, the letter argued that Hu Binchen’s election would give Beijing a ‘green light’ to continue using Interpol as “a vehicle for the PRC government’s repressive policies.”

These legislators had also batted against Hu’s appointment due to allegations that he is directly involved in Operation Fox Hunt, through which Beijing hunts down dissidents in foreign countries and forces them back to China. 

Meanwhile, the Chinese government-backed news outlet The Global Times applauded Hu’s appointment while insisting that Operation: Fox Hunt is a legitimate “anti-corruption campaign” to track down Chinese citizens suspected of economic crimes who fled overseas. 

China government’s Operation Fox Hunt

Operation Fox Hunt was launched by the Chinese President Xi Jinping in June 2014. The Chinese government had claimed that the operation was launched to ostensibly get back fugitives accused of financial crimes.

The FBI in the United States had, however, said that China’s real motive behind the campaign was a growing crackdown on dissent within the Chinese diaspora.

“China describes Fox Hunt as some kind of international anti-corruption campaign. It is not,” FBI Director Christopher Wray warned. “Instead,” he told the Hudson Institute in Washington DC last year, “Fox Hunt is a sweeping bid by [President] Xi to target Chinese nationals who he sees as threats and who live outside of China across the world.”

According to the FBI director, political opponents, dissidents, and critics aiming to expose China’s widespread human rights crimes are on the Chinese Fox Hunt target list.

Return to China promptly or commit suicide

“Hundreds of these Fox Hunt victims that they target live right here in the United States, and many are American citizens or green cardholders. The Chinese government wants to force them to return to China and China’s tactics to accomplish that is shocking.

For example, when it couldn’t locate one Fox Hunt target, the Chinese government sent an emissary to visit the target’s family here in the US. The message they said to pass on: the target had two options, returned to China promptly or commit suicide,” Wray said.

Asserting that the Fox Hunt operations were also underway in other nations, Wray added that the FBI has been coordinating with its partners to thwart Chinese intimidation tactics.

Speaking about the coercive tactics adopted by China, the FBI director said that, “Chinese people in the United States are frequently forced by thinly veiled threats against their family in China.”

Wray said that when Operation Fox Hunt targets refuse to return to China, family members in their home country “have even been arrested for leverage.”

“These are not the actions we would expect from a responsible nation-state. Instead, they’re more like something we would expect from an organized crime syndicate,” Wray said.

It may be noted that last year the United States had charged eight people, including six Chinese citizens, over a three-year plot to intimidate a US resident into returning to China to face criminal charges. The case was believed to be part of China’s ruling Communist Party’s Operation Fox Hunt.

The Justice Department had charged them with concealing from US immigration authorities their active duty statuses with the People’s Liberation Army.

In retaliation to the arrest, China had warned America that it would arrest Americans in China.

Amidst the protests staged by the Hindu community on Friday (November 27) in Gurugram in Haryana, a Muslim man had confessed to travelling 50 km from Mewat to the protest site to offer Namaz on the streets. The video was shared on social media by Swarajya journalist Swati Goel Sharma.

“This is Sector 10 of Gurugram. I am coming here (every Friday) for the past 10 years,” the man named Khalid informed. On being asked about protests against the offering of Namaz on the road, the Muslim man had denied the occurrence of any such incident.

A resident of Mewat, Khalid travels 50 km to reach Sector 10 on Fridays and offer Jumma Namaz. He referred to ‘work’ as the reason for travelling such distances. Mewat region, which falls over Rajasthan and Haryana, has been a hotbed of organised crime, cattle smuggling and illegal Rohingyas.

In another video shared by Swati Goel Sharma, a local resident was seen lambasting journalists for biased coverage of the peaceful Gurugram protests against the offering of Namaz on the streets. “Where will the children of the village go to play? You side with those who fund you,” a local resident could be heard as saying. “Children were thrashed and forcibly removed from the playground… Did you cover this? Did you even bother to know? We do not have Faith in the media.”

The residents of Khandsa village in Sector 37 of Gurugram, along with members of various Hindu organisations, organised a havan or Hindu fire ritual in the same place where Muslims had misbehaved with boys of the village who were playing cricket on the ground.

OpIndia had earlier reported that the ground is situated at Khansda village where commercial vehicles are parked besides local youths play cricket. Residents of Khansda alleged that on Friday, Muslims had misbehaved with boys of the village who were playing cricket on the ground.

As Muslims came to offer namaz, youths playing cricket refused to vacate the ground of their village. They objected to public places being occupied to offer namaz despite people facing problems. The deadlock continued for around one hour when local police of Sector 10 and Sector 37 reached and took them to the police station at Sector 10 to resolve the matter through negotiation.

However, the namaz was offered here later on, but, youths are understood to have told the police that from the next Friday they would not allow their ground to be used for purpose of namaz. They also told police and Muslims that no namaz would be allowed without valid permission.

It was recently reported that the angry locals had also raised slogans against NDTV for pandering to Muslims. Swarajya journalist Swati Goel Sharma has shared a video on Twitter where the miffed Hindus are heard criticising NDTV for their affinity toward Muslims and bigotry against Hindus. A local was heard as saying, “These NDTV journalists have not even once approached Waseem Rizvi, not once have they gone to Owaisi who openly abuses Hindus because all Muslims are the relatives of NDTV people).”

The Delhi police have arrested Mohammad Kasim Ali, the kingpin of an interstate drug racket who was responsible for smuggling heroin consignments from Manipur to Guwahati, Siliguri and then different parts of the country. Kasim Ali was a suspended constable who hailed from Manipur and was apprehended after investigating the information given by two others arrested in the case – Ikbal Khan and Mohammad Ishak. Khan and Ishak were arrested last year and 10 kg of heroin worth 40 crores in the international market were seized.

As per reports, Kasim Ali had lured Ishak and his nephew Ikbal Khan to join in his illegal drug trade by offering an amount of Rs 1 lakh per trip. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Rajeev Ranjan Singh said, “On November, SI Bijender Singh got a tip that Ali would come back from Myanmar border through Churachandpur between 12:10 pm and 12.30 pm to supply huge consignment of heroin to his contact in Churachandpur in Manipur. Accordingly, our team laid a trap and at about 12:15 pm…he was identified and apprehended”.

Rajeev Ranjan Singh noted, “In a family feud over land, he got arrested in a murder case, due to which he has been under suspension and he developed financial issues. During his services at the police department and jail time, he got to know people involved in drug trafficking. To solve his financial problems, he also started trafficking drugs”.

Further, during interrogation, Kasim Ali revealed that he had earlier shipped 10kg of heroin to one Najim in Delhi and another person in Malda last year. Ali told the police that he used to hide the drug consignments in secret compartments in the car to avoid detection by the police. The police are investigating the case to track the suppliers and arrest all the people involved.

Christian Michel James, the key middleman in the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP chopper scam, who is lodged in Tihar jail since his arrest in 2018, has gone on an ‘indefinite’ hunger strike on Thursday to compel the British government to take cognisance of his case. He is believed to have said that this is the only way to get his voice heard by the British government, who until now has paid no heed to his requests to intervene in his case.

Speaking about the development, Michel’s son, Alois said: “We are urging the UK government to intervene. For three years, he has been asking the UK to support him… nothing happens and no reaction is given. He has no option but to go on a hunger strike,” adding that his father is concerned that the trial will never happen.

Speaking from Paris, Michel’s wife, Valerie, said: “It’s been three long years with absolutely no trial, no justice… My husband has no choice but (to resort to) a hunger strike. We are worried about his physical, mental and emotional health. We don’t know anything about his condition. He is probably in a precarious condition. My children are growing with no father.”

Michel writes to UK PM seeking action on his case

It may be noted that on October 5, Christian Michel had written a 9-page letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson threatening to go on a ‘hunger strike’. In the letter, Michel had threatened to commence his hunger strike on November 25 until the UK government takes action on his case. Adding that the British Embassy in Dubai had “refused to intervene”, Michel, in his letter to the British PM, had said that his situation in Tihar jail was akin to being on death row. 

While Michel’s family claimed that he wrote the letter to the British Prime Minister after being denied access to the British High Commission, Tihar Jail Director General Sandeep Goyal dismissed the claims. Goyal said: “None of his rights has been violated. He has been given regular counsellor access as per the procedure. He went on a hunger strike yesterday and has not taken any food. We are monitoring his health; if medical intervention is required, it will be provided to him.”

Michel was extradited to India from the United Arab Emirates on December 5, 2018. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) upon his arrival in India, and then by the Enforcement Directorate, a financial investigation agency, a few days later. He has been held in judicial custody at Tihar Jail since then.

Michel had recently sought bail on the grounds that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) concluded his detention was arbitrary. However, the court, while rejecting the bail, had said the UNHRC WGAD was “not a judicial body and it appears that it did not have complete material before it was forming an opinion”.

After the court had disregarded the UNHRC WGAD recommendation that Michel be released immediately, his lawyer had said that they would petition the UN to take further action.

CBI files supplementary charge-sheet in AgustaWestland scandal, elaborates role of Christian Michel in receiving and routing the alleged kickbacks

On September 19 last year, the CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet against 15 accused, including Michel and accused-turned-approver Rajiv Saxena, in connection with the alleged corruption in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal. The charge sheet elaborated in detail about the alleged role played by Michel in receiving and routing the alleged kickbacks through a web of entities to alleged beneficiaries, which include bureaucrats and politicians.

Michel’s bail application is listed for hearing before the Delhi High Court on December 2.

PTV withdraws case against Shoaib Akhtar after sending PKR 100 million defamation notice following a public spectacle

Two weeks after the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) sent a PKR 100 million defamation notice to former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar, it has withdrawn the case on Thursday (November 25). The development came after the two parties ‘reconciled their differences’ amicably.

While speaking about the case, a PTV lawyer informed that the Corporation had decided to not pursue the case any further. The matter was disposed of by a civil court in Lahore. Earlier, the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) had accused Akhtar of wrongdoing and causing huge financial loss to the company.

“(Your) conduct towards official requirements according to the binding clauses of referred agreement has not only been observed as casual, but a total violation of the agreement,” the broadcaster had sent the PKR 100 million defamation notice to the cricketer on November 8 this year for resigning on-air without a prior 3-month notice period.

The Background of the defamation notice against Shoaib Akhtar

On October 26, Akhtar walked out of a live sports programme broadcast on PTV after the host Nauman Niaz asked him to leave on account of being ‘over smart and rude’. The incident took place during the post-match analysis, following the fierce encounter between Pakistan and New Zealand.

Akhtar was asked by the programme host about Pakistan’s chase in a match. The former bowler, however, ignored the question and decided to talk about another pacer.  Rattled by Akhtar’s behaviour, Niaz had said, “You are being a little rude so I don’t want to say this but if you’re being over-smart then you can go. I am saying this on air.” Miffed by the treatment meted out to him, Shoaib Akhtar resigned from the PTV as a cricket analyst.

Apart from the damages, PTV had asked the former fast bowler to pay an amount of Rs 33,33,000, which was equivalent to a three-month salary, to the organisation. Reportedly, PTV also reserved its rights to initiate ‘legal proceedings” against Akhtar. Later, Niaz in an interview on a YouTube channel had candidly confessed to his mistake. and apologised for his behaviour.

Turkey has descended into chaos with soaring prices, 20% inflation and protests against the flailing economy. According to reports, Turkey’s currency, Lira, has plunged to historic lows and the 20% inflation has pushed the prices up significantly, devaluing the local currency salaries. While protests rage in parts of Turkey, the Turkish government has urged its citizens to go vegetarian. The Turkish government has decided to switch to vegetarianism and raise awareness against food waste to face the collapse of the Turkish lira and uncontrollable food prices hikes, according to a report in euractiv.com.

“Instead of eating 1-2 kilos of meat monthly, let’s eat half a kilo. We buy 2 kilos of tomatoes and half of them go to the trash. Well, let’s get 2 tomatoes,” said Turkish lawmaker Zülfü Demirbağ who belongs to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s AKP party. He made this statement in light of the total collapse of the Turkish lira and the looming economic crisis, according to reports.

The Turkish government has employed brutal measures to contain the protests that have broken in various parts of Turkey against the economic policies of Erdogan. On Wednesday, it is reported that riot police broke up a protest that was raging on the streets of the capital city.

The protesters, mostly members of left-wing groups, were starting to gather in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, located on the Asian side of the city, when police intervened.

Demonstrators were chanting slogans calling for Erdoğan’s government to resign.

The police had put up barricades and ended up dragging the protestors away. According to reports, 30 people were detained in the Wednesday protest alone. According to another report, hundreds of social media accounts have been targeted in Turkey for “inciting people to hatred and calling on citizens in the streets to use violence [against price hikes].”

Experts have attributed the slide in the Turkish economy to the insane policies of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erdogan has described the Interest rate to be the “enemy” and has refused to increase the rate to cool off inflation. The central bank of Turkey also has no autonomy to rectify the slide in the Economy and they are to follow the policies set by the President. Erdogan has fired three central bank chiefs in roughly two years because they refused to reduce the interest rate in accordance with the whims of Erdogan.

Semih Tumen, a former central bank deputy governor who Erdogan dismissed in October, sharply criticized the president’s moves.

“We need to abandon this irrational experiment, which has no chance of success, and return to quality policies that will protect the value of the Turkish lira and protect the welfare of the Turkish people,” Tumen wrote on Twitter, according to a translation.

On November 26, another video surfaced where a cook was seen spitting on the dough while cooking tandoori roti at an engagement ceremony in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. The video of the gross act was shared on Twitter by Sudarshan News.

The news channel said that the video is probably from Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh, where the youth named Shadab Miya was spitting on the dough while cooking tandoori roti at an engagement ceremony. It urged the Ghaziabad police to confirm the authenticity of the video.

The Ghaziabad police, in turn, responded by confirming that as soon as the video came to their notice, the Muradnagar police took cognisance of the issue and registered a case against the accused. They added that Shadab Miya was arrested and sent to jail.

Recently, there has been an increasing number of instances when cooks have been caught spitting on the dough while preparing rotis. On November 15, in a similar case reported from Ghaziabad itself, one of the cooks at a hotel that operates by the name ‘Muslim Hotel’ had been detained by the Police for questioning after he was seen spitting on the dough while making tandoori roti. In the video of the act which went viral on the microblogging site, the man, who was wearing a white skull cap, could be seen spitting while making the roti. A complaint in this regard was filed by Hindu Raksha Dal at Loni Police Station.

Similarly, a month ago, a similar video had surfaced on social media in which a man was seen spitting on roti at a Dhaba in Ghaziabad. The accused arrested in the case was identified as Tamizuddin.
