Who killed Swedish PM Olof Palme to be revealed soon: Could this signal fresh trouble for Gandhis in the Bofors case?

More than 30 years ago in 1986, the Swedish Prime Minister, Olaf Palme was murdered in cold blood. Palme was shot in the back at close range on a Stockholm street while walking home from the cinema with his wife Lisbeth. There have been several theories about the murder of Palme and almost 35 years on, the world might finally know who killed him and why he had to die. The prosecutors investigating the case have received a dossier from South Africa and the Swedes are set to present their findings on the Olaf Palme assassination. While this might put many ghosts to rest, it might sound trouble for the Gandhi family as well if at all the Olaf Palme assassination turns out to have a connection to the Bofors scam.

Theories about the murder of Olof Palme

There are several theories about the assassination of Olof Palme. One theory claims that the South African apartheid intelligence services, motivated by Palme’s support for the African National Congress and his efforts to close down arms and oil smuggling rings involving the apartheid regime became the reason for his assassination.

Another theory is that Olaf Palme was killed by an individual acting out of ideological hatred for the Social Democrat prime minister. One suspect is Stig Engström, known as “Skandia man” because he worked for the Swedish insurance company in offices next to the scene of the murder.

However, there is another theory that is of particular important to India, and especially the Gandhi family. It is also alleged that Olaf Palme may have been killed over the Bofors scam.

One of the theories furthered by Dr Jan Bondeson, the author of Blood on the Snow: The Killing of Olof Palme, told the BBC that she believes that middlemen involved in the Bofors scandal of the 1980s were responsible for his killing.

“It may well be that Palme found out that the Bofors company was corrupt the very day of the murder,” he said. “That gives the middlemen behind the Bofors deal a strong reason to murder him. But that’s something the police have always ignored,” Bondeson told the BBC.

Olaf Palme, Rajiv Gandhi and the Bofors scandal

The Bofors scam was one, over 30 years ago, that bought the Rajiv Gandhi government to its knees. On March 18, 1986, India signed a Rs 1,437-crore deal with Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors for the supply of 400 155 mm Howitzer guns for the Army. A year later, on April 16, 1987, a Swedish radio channel alleged that the company had bribed top Indian politicians and defence personnel to secure the contract. The subsequent investigation led to several layers being exposed by the then investigative journalist Chitra Subramaniam. In her investigation, she had revealed and asserted repeatedly that Rajiv Gandhi was personally culpable in the Bofors scam.

A journalist investigating the Bofors scam, Chitra Subramaniam had revealed that there was a quid pro quo arrangement between Rajiv Gandhi and Olof Palme in the Bofors scandal. Bofors would pay money to a foundation in Sweden to make it easier for payments to be made to Indians and others.

In a report published in The News Minute, Chitra had reported:

This conversation took place on a flight in the latter part of January 1986 when the two Prime Ministers were travelling together. Rajiv Gandhi “urgently requested Olof Palme to receive funds from Bofors as a counter-weight” to payments in India,” Sten Lindstrom, the police official who led the investigations has told TNM.

“Olof Palme and Martin Ardbo informed Rajiv Gandhi that the funds could be paid from Bofors to a foundation in Sweden for the purpose of promoting industry and employment in the Karlskoga region” where the Swedish arms manufacturer is located.  This conversation took place towards the end of the negotiations, at a time when the Swedes were worried the contract would be granted to the French whose lobbying in New Delhi and Paris was fierce. The Howitzer contract with Bofors was signed in March 1986.

Author and journalist Steig Larsson had also expressed his suspicions about the murder of Olaf Palme having something to do with the Bofors scandal.

In a letter Stieg Larsson wrote only 20 days after the assassination, he mentions that weapons dealings may be the motive.

In a Times of India interview of Larsson, he says:

That’s also what I come to at the end of my investigation. It involves Bofors, India and several other countries. Remember that PM Rajiv Gandhi came to Olof Palme’s funeral on March 15, 1986, and that’s when he officially confirmed the order of 400 pieces of 155mm howitzers of a value of Rs 1,437-crore. When Olof Palme was shot he had already started a campaign to stop illegal weapon deliveries to Iran through several transit countries, which is a very valid motive for the assassination.

In fact, CIA documents had revealed something far worse. The documents had revealed that Sweden had closed the investigation into the Bofors scandal because it wanted to save Rajiv Gandhi from the blowback of the investigation.

Sonia Gandhi, her maternal family and the Bofors scam

In an exclusive story, OpIndia had revealed the possible involvement of Sonia Gandhi and her maternal Italian family in the Bofors scam. OpIndia has accessed evidence to show that Sonia Gandhi’s Italian family could have been involved in the Bofors scandal, with their names carefully hidden from the public eye. The documentary evidence also points towards the fact that perhaps, the government of India (GOI) under Rajiv Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi himself had knowledge of the alleged involvement and actively tried to cover it up.

The details of that investigation can be read here.

While there are several theories about the assassination of Olaf Palme and any one of them could be true, nobody really knows what the revelations might be, come Wednesday. However, at the off-chance that the investigation does reveal Bofors as the reason for his assassination, it could open a can of worms and a world of problems for the Gandhi family.

Amit Shah sounds the poll bugle in West Bengal through virtual rally, says BJP government in state will bring back the ‘Sonar Bangla’ glory

Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah kicked off the party’s campaign for West Bengal 2021 Assembly elections on Tuesday with a virtual rally. Amit Shah addressed the ‘West Bengal Jan Samvad Rally’ via multiple social media platforms.

Amit Shah started his virtual address by describing West Bengal as a land of great leaders and intellectuals like Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, among many others. Earlier this week, Shah had addressed a virtual rally in Bihar.

Amit Shah pays respect to deceased BJP workers

Addressing the rally, Amit Shah mentioned the political killings of BJP workers in West Bengal. Amit Shah also assured that the party will not forget the sacrifice of workers.

“Since 2014, over 100 BJP workers lost their lives in political battle here in West Bengal. I pay my respect to their families as they have contributed to the development of Sonar Bangla. Their sacrifice will be etched in golden letters once BJP fulfils the dreams of the people of bringing about real change in West Bengal,” said former BJP President Amit Shah.

The Home Minister also added that while democracy has strengthened its roots and has been consolidated in the entire country, “West Bengal remains the only state where political violence is propagated”.

Amit Shah also said he prayed for the souls of all those who have lost their lives in the fight against coronavirus and the destruction caused by Cyclone Amphan in the state.

“Bengal is the only state where communal violence is still ongoing. It should stop. I assure you that BJP isn’t here just to bring a revolution or do politics, but also build a cultural and traditional Bengal again. We want to create Sonar Bangla again,” he said.

Lashing out at the Mamata Banerjee government, Amit Shah said that the BJP will return West Bengal to its glory.

The Home Minister also pointed out that how opposition parties and leaders, including Rahul Gandhi had criticised the Jan Dhan bank accounts. “It is through these accounts that 51 crore people have received direct financial benefits in the time of coronavirus pandemic,” Shah added.

Amit Shah questions Mamata Banerjee over implementation of Ayushman Bharat

In his speech, Amit Shah also criticised regarding Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government’s decision not to allow the implementation of Ayushman Bharat. Amit Shah asked whether people of Bengal did not have the right to get free access to free health.

“Do the poor people of Bengal have no right to receive free and quality treatment? Why then, would you not allow the Ayushman Bharat scheme here? Mamata Ji, stop doing politics on the rights of poor people. You can do politics on a lot of other issues, but not on poor person’s health,” warned Amit Shah.

The Home Minister also said that even Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accepted it in the end but asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was not letting the scheme be implemented in West Bengal.

Questions Mamata on CAA

Questioning Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to Citizenship Amendment Act, Shah said, “Mamata Ji needs to come clean on why she is opposing the CAA. What is your problem if Namshudras and other such communities live respectfully in the country?” He further challenged her to hold a press conference and give out a report card of her governance in past term.

Corona Express

Slamming Banerjee for calling the Shramik special trains for transporting migrants back to their home states as ‘Corona Express’, Shah said, “UP has received 1700 trains, Bihar 1500. I was astonished when Mamata didi named trains that were coming to Bengal ‘Corona Express’. The name ‘Corona Express’ that you have given, Mamata didi, will become your exit route. You’ve added salt to the wounds of the migrant workers and they will not forget this.”

Home Minister Shah’s Tuesday’s virtual rally comes a day after he addressed the ‘Odisha Jansamvad’ virtual rally on Monday. On Sunday, the Home Minister had addressed the ‘Bihar Jansamvad’ beginning his series of online rallies.

Coronavirus outbreak in China may have begun in August and not December 2019 as claimed: Harvard study

According to a research paper published by the Harvard Medical School, the Coronavirus outbreak in China may have begun in late summer or early fall of 2019, much before it was reported to the world in December last year. The paper titled, “Analysis of hospital traffic and search engine data in Wuhan China indicates early disease activity in the Fall of 2019” was jointly written by Benjamin Rader, Nsoesie, Elaine Okanyene, Yiyao L. Barnoon, Lauren Goodwin, and John S. Brownstein.

The study observed a dramatic increase in hospital traffic and Baidu search queries related to symptoms of Coronavirus in late summer and early Fall of 2019 and thus preceding the documented start of COVID-19 pandemic in December. As per the epidemiological studies conducted earlier, 2/3 rd of the Coronavirus cases in Wuhan were found to have links with the Huanan wet markets.

The Harvard paper observed that Coronavirus may have been transmitting in Wuhan even before the identification of the wet market as a possible cause of spread. The study observed that the deadly pathogen may have adapted itself for ‘human transmission’ by the time it was reported in December 2019.

Methodology of the Harvard Research Paper

Earlier used in Latin America, the scientists used high-resolution satellite images (with an average resolution of 70 cm) from RS metrics to determine ‘hospital occupancy’ in Wuhan. The study identified 6 hospitals, namely Hubei Women and Children’s, Wuhan Tianyou, Wuhan Central, Wuhan Tongji Medical University, Wuhan Union, and Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University for analysis.

The research paper further estimated the time and date of each image, besides the address, latitude and longitude of each hospital. The dataset was then compared against a baseline for both weekdays and weekends at the hospitals. As for the search queries, the scientists checked daily data of web and mobile search logs between April 2017 and May 2020. Besides, data was also collected for influenza-like diseases from the Children’s Hospital of Wuhan and Wuhan No. 1 Hospital.

Results and Analysis

While there was a general upward trend in hospital traffic between 2018 and 2020, the study observed an increase in hospital occupancy from August 2019 with the traffic reaching its peak in December. As per the study, 5 of the 6 hospitals showed their highest relative daily volume between September and October last year.

Diarrhea and cough which are common symptoms of Coronavirus coincide with Baidu search results during the said period. Interestingly, the search query and hospital traffic also reduced after a lockdown was imposed in Wuhan on January 23. The study also noted an increase in hospital volume in the spring of this year, besides increased search queries for cough and diarrhea in May 2020.

Heavy hospital traffic can be observed in October 2019 which reduced drastically by February 2020, post lockdown. An increase in the number of vehicles (marked in red) in parking lots can also be noted between October 2018 and October 2019 at Wuhan Tianyou hospital.

Inference

While the study could not directly confirm that the dramatic increase in hospital traffic, it gave credence to the hypothesis that the outbreak of the pandemic may have happened before its identification in the wet markets of Wuhan. The unique increase in search queries for a Coronavirus symptom such as diarrhoea was not seen in preceding influenza seasons which further corroborates the hypothesis.

Madhya Pradesh: Congress tries to question Shivraj Chouhan govt for ‘missing’ data, ends up embarrassing itself and deletes tweet, read details

On Tuesday, the Madhya Pradesh Congress committed another goof-up on social media after one of their tweets was found to be defying logic and also ended up looking clueless, forcing them to delete the tweet.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday had said that the recovery rate in the state was increasing as more than 64 per cent of the coronavirus patients had shown signs of recovery. According to the latest data, the number of coronavirus patients in Madhya Pradesh is 9,638 till Monday, with 2,688 active cases and the number of deceased due to the pandemic stood at 414.

The total number of patients recovered from the coronavirus was 6,536 which is actually 69.52 per cent of the total case. The death rate in the state was at a low 4 per cent of the total cases.

However, the Madhya Pradesh Congress took to Twitter to ‘troll’ the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for the work it has been doing to fight the pandemic in the state.

The MP Congress shared a tweet saying that MP Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan stated that the recovery rate in the state was 64 per cent and the death rate was around 4 per cent. Exposing its lack of understanding over statistics, the MP Congress went on to cluelessly ask regarding the rest of 32 per cent of cases, which according to them was nothing but ‘missing’ data.

The MP Congress tweet, which defied all sorts of logic, went to insinuate that the MP government was ‘hiding the details’ of 32 per cent of cases after Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan did not specifically speak about it. The MP Congress failed to comprehend that the 32% of cases, which it claims to be missing, was nothing but the active cases in the state.

As social media users pointed out that the ‘missing’ 32 per cent was nothing but active cases, the MP Congress facing an embarrassment, deleted its tweet.

The MP Congress, which tweeted on Tuesday morning, also posted wrong data to claim that the recovery rate was just 64 per cent. However, in fact, the recovery rate is much higher according to the latest figures, which is close to 70 per cent.

Madhya Pradesh Congress’ faux pas on social media

This is not the first time that Madhya Pradesh Congress has indulged in such a lame act. Last month, the Madhya Pradesh Congress had embarrassed its own party on social media after it committed a faux-pas.

Following the announcement made by the Finance Minister regarding the economic revival package, which amounts to 10 per cent of the country’s GDP, the MP Congress had taken to Twitter to state that Rs 20 lakh crores was not enough. They had claimed that the coronavirus pandemic has devoured everything, hence, not 10% of the GDP, but the PM should give away at least 50% of the GDP.

As Madhya Pradesh Congress thought that 10% of the GDP was not enough to revive the economy, the same party had demanded half the amount for the purpose just a month ago. In the second week of April, the Congress party had said that the govt should announce an economic package which should be worth at least 5-6% of the GDP.

The flip-flop by the Congress party and inability to take a firm stand on an important issue such as revival of Indian economy had received severe criticism from various spectrum accusing the Congress party of being non-serious amidst a health crisis.

“There is a limit to politics”: Amit Shah slams Mamata Banerjee for not adopting Ayushman Bharat, says BJP CM in Bengal will implement it immediately

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today while addressing a virtual rally in West Bengal criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not implementing Ayushman Bharat health scheme of the Union Government.

HM Amit Shah said how over 1 crore people across India have availed free surgeries under Ayushman Bharat. “BJP Bengal karyakartas clapping and applauding this, sorry to break it to you but you do not get the benefit because your chief minister Mamata Banerjee has not implemented the scheme. Do the poor people of Bengal have no right to receive free and quality treatment? Why then, would you not allow the Ayushman Bharat scheme here? Mamata Ji, stop doing politics on the rights of poor people. You can do politics on a lot of other issues, but not on poors’ health,” He said.

He further said that once the BJP forms government in West Bengal, the newly elected chief minister will implement Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal the very next minute.

Fact Check: No, a Muslim man was not forced to lick the spit of a Hindu. Here is the truth

On May 30, a Twitter user named Friends of Kashmir 6 had shared a contentious video of a man torturing a victim to claim that minorities were unsafe in ‘fascist’ India. He wrote, “In India, a Muslim man being forced to lick a Hindu’s spit. Most probably to break his Ramadan fast…!”

In the video, the perpetrator could be seen slapping a victim and forcing him to do sit-ups. He then spits on the bonnet of a nearby car and forces the victim to lick it. While torturing the man dressed in white, the accused could be heard saying, “Kyu bola Ramzan ka Naam? Aab bolega Ramzan ka naam? Tere ko DCP ko du kya?

The loose translation goes as “Why did you confess Ramzan’s name? Will you dare to say now? Should I hand you over to the DCP?” This video was also shared last week with a similar communal angle by a man named Shaikh Azirur Rahman who, according to his Facebook profile, is a journalist with The Guardian. Rahman has now deleted the video.

What is the Truth?

According to a report by The Times of India, the disturbing incident took place in the Limbayat area of Surat in Gujarat. It was first reported by TV9 Gujarati on April 7. The man seen slapping the victim has been identified as Salman. Both the persons in the video are from the Muslim community. Salman did not want the victim to testify against another man named Ramzan and was thus seen torturing the victim.

The said incident was also covered by Divya Bhaskar in detail. As per the report, the vehicle seen in the background of the contentious video belonged to the Surat Municipal Corporation’s garden department. Police inspector (Limbayat) also assured that a complaint would be lodged against the accused. The festival of Ramzan commenced on April 24 this year. As such, the incident predates the festival. Therefore, the viral claim that a Muslim man was forced to lick the spit of a Hindu man in the month of Ramzan is false.

Communally-charged Fake News amidst Coronavirus pandemic

This is not the first time that a communal angle was given to a criminal act to cast aspersions about the Hindu community, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, a Twitter user named Kamran had shared the fake news of Brahmins allegedly severing the tongue of a 16-year-old girl in the Bhadaval village of Uttar Pradesh to protect the village from the wrath. According to the fake news peddler, the tongue was sacrificed as a religious offering to a nearby Shivji’s temple. However, police investigation revealed that the girl had herself cut off her tongue and was not coerced into committing the gory act.

Are you the mouthpiece for lobbying foreign airlines? Union Minister Hardeep Puri slams ET for misleading report on Air India’s Vande Bharat Mission

On Monday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri slammed the Economic Times for allegedly becoming a mouthpiece for foreign aviation companies and accused them of making misleading claims on the Vande Bharat Mission, a repatriation operation being run by the Indian government to bring back stranded Indians in different parts of the world in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

In a report titled, “Rough weather for those boarding Vande Bharat”, the Economic Times had published various claims targeting the Modi government’s Vande Bharat Mission. In its report, the ET had claimed that those people wanting to come back to Bharat or fly out are more than ‘fed up’ with the Vande Bharat Mission.

Image by Hardeep Singh Puri on Twitter

Further, the report alleged that the national carrier Air India has been charging exorbitant charges to bring back stranded Indians from different parts of the world. The report claimed that Air India is ‘getting flak’ for what customers say exorbitant and arbitrary pricing and a poorly run website.

“Many customers are clamouring for the government to allow more airlines, including foreign carriers to operate scheduled repatriation flights from overseas,” said the ET report while batting on behalf of private and foreign airlines to be allowed to run flights to repatriate Indians.

According to ET, the charges for an economy class flight ticket under Vande Bharat Mission from Delhi to Houston starts at Rs 1.03 lakh, which is twice of normal economy class fares. Similarly, Delhi-Toronto and Delhi-Vancouver tickets are priced at Rs 1.07 lakh. The ET claimed that the flights to the US and UK are at least 50 per cent higher than the normal fare.

The ET also made random allegations such as random fare hikes, non-responsive, slow Air India website, higher fuel charges etc against Air India to discredit the Vande Bharat Mission.

Union Civil Aviation Minister responds

Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday took to Twitter to respond to the allegations made by the Economic Times in its article. Calling it a ‘new low’, the Civil Aviation Minister Puri gave a point-to-point explanation debunking all the claims made by ET in its report.

Accusing the ET of becoming a mouthpiece for foreign airlines, Union Minister Puri asked ET who were these people who are ‘fed up’ with the Vande Bharat Mission. “Are they the nearly 70,000 people who have returned to India or the more than 17000 who have flown out?” Hardeep Singh Puri questioned Economic Times for their misleading report.

The Civil Aviation Minister’s Tweet in response to ET report

The Minister asked whether people who booked nearly 22,000 online tickets to US-Canada within few hours of opening of bookings or the 22,000 Indians who intend to book their tickets for the returning flight are the ones who are ‘fed up?’

Defending the prices of flights under VBM, the Union Minister said that charges for tickets under the Vande Bharat Mission are lower than some of the charter repatriation flights offered by foreign airlines.

“VBM (Vande Bharat Mission) charges ₹13K per passenger on Gulf routes & planes fly empty on one leg. According to information in public domain pvt carriers/charters are charging upwards of ₹20K for same,” Puri said on twitter.

“Similarly, the fare on flights to Houston, as engaged by the concerned embassy, was ₹3 lakhs, while our citizens pay ₹1.03 lakhs on a flight to US under Mission Vande Bharat,” he added.

The minister also said that the travelers to Tel-Aviv paid ₹82,500 on the charters organised by the concerned embassy while Indian citizens pay ₹51,938 on flights under Vande Bharat Mission.

The Aviation Minister added that Air India has not overcharged for tickets and said that the national carrier is charging much less than the current commercial fares.

Explaining the rationale behind the flight charges, The Union Minister said, “Civil Aviation operations cannot but reflect the costing. Normal operations are different from evacuation operations. Aircrafts have to be parked for upto 40 hours on long haul routes before the return journey during Vande Bharat Mission. There are other costs involved as well.

“Please remember that unlike special charter, AirIndia is charging these fares for scheduled flights & earning revenue both ways. The journalist should have cross-checked that while 70K people returned, only 17K odd flew out. Many of the flights are going empty,” he added.

The Minister also added that AirIndia is operating flights at cheapest possible rates. The citizens of India returning from abroad have a clear choice, one they can utilise the flights under Vande Bharat Mission, or, they can utilise the services of pvt Airlines operating charter services, which are much costlier.

Regarding the claims of a slow website, Puri stated that attached screenshots, rather than random statements would have erased all doubts.

The Vande Bharat Mission

Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) is a major repatriation exercise by the Indian government to bring back Indian citizens stranded abroad amidst the coronavirus-induced travel restrictions.

Under VBM, Air India Ltd and its subsidiary Air India Express have repatriated thousands of stranded Indian citizens from various nations after the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdowns in several nations.

So far, National carrier Air India Limited and its subsidiary Air India Express have brought 66,831 Indians from abroad on 365 flights on its repatriation flights under the Vande Bharat Mission, while 17,180 passengers have travelled on 369 outbound flights by the national carrier to various foreign nations.

In the second phase, the government of India may allow the private airline to participate on repatriation mission under Vande Bharat Mission.

China cries foul as India-Australia sign defence deals, sees it as attempt to ‘confront’ China

The improvement of diplomacy and bilateral ties between India and Australia seems to have spooked China. On Monday, the English version of Chinese Communist party mouthpiece Global Times published an article on the bilateral trade ties and defence deal signed by India and Australia.

Global Times on India-Australia defence deal

Last week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart stepped up partnership and concluded nine arrangements including mutual logistics support for militaries. The pact is aimed to give Indian warships and aircrafts enhanced reach towards the Pacific. India has similar such pacts with America and France.

Chinese government media alleged that this move is a join effort between India and Australia to counter China. “Yet after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, India seems to be worrying that its own international status is declining while China’s influence is rising, especially in regions such as South Asia and Africa where India wishes to play an influential role. Therefore, its attitude toward China has to some extent changed,” Global Times writes.

Chinese media further said how military cooperation between India and Australia “will shape a confrontational atmosphere in the region, jeopardizing peace and stability.”

ScoMosas diplomacy

This criticism of India-Australia diplomacy comes close on the heels of the very evident camaraderie Prime Minister Modi shares with his Australian counterpart PM Scott Morrison. Prior to the video conference between the two leaders, PM Morrison had shared image of vegetarian samosas he had prepared and expressed his wish to share the same with PM Modi.

Prime Minister Modi too shared that once the coronavirus pandemic is history he would like to share samosas with PM Morrison as well.

Amusingly, even over the ScoMosas, some ‘liberals’ in India had a meltdown over improvement in bilateral ties.

Arvind Kejriwal has become the monster he once promised to fight

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party supremo is again at loggerheads with the central government. Arvind Kejriwal had recently announced that Delhi government-run hospitals and private hospitals will treat only those coronavirus positive patients who are Delhi residents.

Delhi is the national capital. People from across the country and world live here and call this place their home. They may be domiciled in other states but live, work and contribute to the economy of this state. Now imagine being told that despite all this, you couldn’t get treated to Delhi government run hospitals because well, you’re not from Delhi.

Yes, so you have responsibility to protect the interest and lives of people who voted you to power, but where does your humanity go when it comes to the people of this very nation?

Kejriwal government later issued a list of documents one would need to get admission in Delhi government-run hospitals.

The documents include:

  • Voter ID
  • Current passbook of bank/post office/Kisan card
  • Ration card, passport, income tax return or driving license
  • Latest water/electricity/telephone/gas bill on patient’s or immediate relative’s name such as parents etc.
  • Post received or delivered on patients name on Delhi address
  • Aadhaar card issued before 7th June 2020.

I have been living in Delhi since the past 2.5 years. I have none of these documents in the present address. All my ID proofs have Ahmedabad as a residential address. If in case I need treatment, the chief minister of the state I live in would have turned his back to me. I, of course, could go to a central government-run hospital for treatment, but I shouldn’t have to. I shouldn’t have to be turned away. No patient should be turned away.

The Delhi LG on Monday evening overturned this order by Arvind Kejriwal. Because, you know, you cannot deny medical assistance to someone in need just because they are not Delhi residents. It goes against the basic tenets of humanity.

You just don’t abandon your people, even if they didn’t vote for you.

And you just don’t abandon people, especially when they vote for you.

Let me remind you of the time when Arvind Kejriwal rode on the support of the poor. Remember his promises of pakka houses? And clean water and education?

When lockdown was first announced in a bid to curb the coronavirus pandemic, announcements were made on loudspeakers in colonies where workers from other states lived informing them that they will be taken to Anand Vihar bus stop in Delhi from where they could get the buses to their home states. This after most states had sealed borders to stop movement of people so that coronavirus can be contained.

Prior to this, Delhi government-run DTC buses ferried these migrant workers till the UP-Delhi border and just let them off. This after other state governments had already suspended commercial bus services. Following which, lakhs of migrant workers took foot journeys to their homes as the UP state government had closed state transport buses. On humanitarian grounds, after the lakhs of migrant workers were found walking home, the UP government on 28th March announced that it will ply buses to drop off these people to their homes safely. This was done to ensure people do not have to suffer anymore than they already have to owing to the pandemic.

On same day, the Uttar Pradesh authorities had stated that the Delhi authorities disconnected the water and electrical energy connections of individuals. “Throughout lockdown, individuals weren’t even supplied meals and milk in Delhi,” stated the report quoting UP govt sources. The UP authorities have also alleged that DTC buses dropped off individuals on the Delhi border within the title of assist.

Delhi chief minister abandoned lakhs of Indians.

He became the monster he had promised to once fight.
