Why are Muslims, including the Tablighi Jamaat indulging in violence and defying lockdown: The answer lies in what Babasaheb Ambedkar said

The conduct of the Tablighi Jamaat has horrified the entire country. Apart from spreading the Wuhan Coronavirus to the entire country, members of the Jamaat have engaged in sexually predatory behaviour against the female healthcare staff at hospitals, spat on doctors and others in an effort to infect them with the virus, thrown tantrums and made unreasonable demands and refused to cooperate with the healthcare staff and in addition to all of this, some of they have gone into hiding and switched off their phones in an effort to avoid detection by the administration.

A lot of people appear shocked by the level of indecency the Tablighi Jamaat have engaged in, however, to anyone who has paid any attention to the nature of Islamic fundamentalist organizations, such antics would seem to be par for the course. Indeed, if efforts had not been made to whitewash history and hide the true nature of things, it could very well be argued that the administration and the authorities would have been better prepared to deal with the contingency.

it’s not only in recent times that stalwarts have cautioned against Islamic fundamentalism, dire warning have been issued since decades and centuries. But with time, however, such words of wisdom have been relegated to the dustbins of history. And it falls upon us to delve through the pages of books mired in webs of misinterpretations and false innuendos in order to decipher the truth. There was a time when this country was much more united than it is now, when certain truths were regarded as so self evident as to not raise eyebrows when spoken out loud. But with the invasion of Democracy into every facet of public life, political partisanship gained primacy over factual accuracy and certain forms of truth, which were no longer convenient, were banished from public thought.

And so it happened that objective truth was thrashed, twisted, molded and finally recast into something that hardly resembled its original form, to put it mildly. Thus, Shri Rama became a misogynist, Hinduism became intolerant and Islam became the ideal every liberal should aspire to. However, it was not always so. There was indeed a moment in history when it was incumbent upon intellectuals to owe their allegiance to objective reality in order to be taken seriously. However, it was not always so. It was during such an era where certain truths were considered self-evident that Babasaheb Ambedkar wrote his famous book, ‘Pakistan or the Partition of India’ (PDF).

In his book, Ambedkar offered scathing criticism of Islam and minced no words. But the most salient feature of the book was the manner in which he highlighted the ideology of ‘Us vs The’ that is so intrinsic to the Islamic faith. Indeed, he went so far as to claim that it would be impossible for any true Muslim to consider India his motherland and regard his fellow countrymen of a different faith as his own kinsmen.

Ambedkar had said:

“The second defect of Islam is that it is a system of social self-government and is incompatible with local self-government, because the allegiance of a Muslim does not rest on his domicile in the country which is his but on the faith to which he belongs. …. Wherever there is the rule of Islam, there is his own country. In other words, Islam can never allow a true Muslim to adopt India as his motherland and regard a Hindu as his kith and kin.”

Admittedly, nonetheless, seventy years of living under a non-Islamic constitution in a country with an overwhelming majority of Hindus has had its effects. Therefore, it might not be entirely accurate to say as of now that a ‘true Muslim’ could never be devoted to the country. But the general observation made my Ambedkar still stands. It is indeed abundantly clear from the manner in which Tablighi Jamaat has acted in recent times.

From the words of Maulana Saad of Markaz Nizamuddin, it was clear that he does not have any respect for Indian Laws and neither does he believe he needs to obey them. He exhorted his followers to disobey the social distancing guidelines issued by the government and dubbed the Wuhan Coronavirus a conspiracy against Islam. And the consequences are there for all of us to see. Almost simultaneously, Mosques across the country have been found to be providing safe refuge to the Jamaatis even as the administration runs helter-skelter to find them. For their own safety, in case it needs to be told.

And it’s not just the Maulana Saad of Tablighi Jamaat who has been engaging in such conduct. There were those on the video-sharing app TikTok who decreed that the Wuhan Coronavirus is Allah’s NRC. And the undertones become tragic considering an overwhelming majority of those getting infected with the virus and succumbing to it are Muslims themselves. In another instance, one Tiktokiya who had mocked masks tested positive for the virus himself.

The ‘defect’ of Islam that Ambedkar was referring to manifests itself as loyalty towards one’s Maulana or Maulvi takes precedence over the country. The nation, of course, is an ideal of a very high order. Loyalty to Maulanas and Maulvis often takes precedence over even familial ties. It is this very phenomenon that manifests itself in the heinous practice of nikah halala where a Muslim man divorces his wife and then maker her have intercourse with Islamic clerics, or other members of the family, before remarrying her. This is the embodiment of the corruption of moral values encapsulated in its finest form, where individuals are motivated towards defiling the sacred institution of marriage in pursuit of the satisfaction of carnal human desires. And all of it in order to fulfill the whims of the Islamic clerics and perverse desires of the husband.

Ambedkar was also right when he opined that Islamic doctrines prevent Muslims from treating Hindus as their kinsmen. Even this has manifested during the whole Wuhan Coronavirus crisis when Muslims have continued to view their Hindu brethren with extreme suspicion and contempt. Indeed, it has become evident that even in the face of an impending apocalypse if it were the infidels warning them of it, Muslim fundamentalists would consider it a conspiracy to drive a wedge between Muslims.

There is a certain power structure within Islam. This structure places the greatest power and authority on the shoulders of the Islamic clerics. These clerics often have more power over their followers than the very laws of the land or the administration. If these clerics urge their followers to defy Indian laws, then an overwhelming majority of them will do so. And it is this threat that constantly looms large of the Indian Republic. There is an urgent need to inspire a reformation within Islam so that the power and authority of these clerics can be negated enough so that the laws of the land take primacy over them. However, it is an extremely difficult task and one that will not be achievable without pursuing illiberal methods.

Currently, Indian authorities take the help of Islamic clerics in order to control the population. It was most recently observed at Balbhoonpura in Haldwani, Uttarakhand were hundreds and thousand of Muslims poured out onto the streets defying lockdown orders after rumours spread that the Police was misbehaving with certain Muslims. The administration then sought the help of local Islamic clerics in order to make the individuals return to their homes. However, the damage by then could have already been done and the virus might already have spread further.

The Indian administration may continue to take help from the few well meaning Islamic clerics but until the power structures within Islam are dismantled, there will always be certain clerics like those in Tablighi Jamaat who will hold the country hostage and the lives of over a billion people during times of crisis. It needs to be understood that Tablighi Jamaat is not the problem in itself, it is the symptom of the problem that has long since plagued the Indian Republic. Unless that issue is addressed, circumstances will not improve for the better.

Troubled by the reports of food aid being denied to Hindu, Christian minorities of Pakistan, says USCIRF

0

The United States federal entity, United States Commission on International Religious Freedom(USCIRF) revealed that it was troubled by the reports of Hindus and Christians being denied food aid in Pakistan during the grave times when Wuhan coronavirus has hit the nation.

USCIRF commissioner Anurima Bhargava said, “These actions are simply reprehensible. As COVID-19 continues to spread, vulnerable communities in Pakistan are fighting hunger and to keep their families safe and healthy. Food aid must not be denied because of religion or faith.”

The commissioner urged the Pakistan government to ensure that the food aid is shared equally among Hindus, Christians and other minorities. As per reports, the commission took this into account after the reports of Karachi based non-governmental organization Saylani Welfare International Trust which has been allegedly discriminating among the religious faiths while providing services, arguing that the aid is reserved for the Muslims only.

USCIRF Commissioner John Moorie said, “In a recent address by Prime Minister Imran Khan to the international community, he highlighted the challenge faced by the governments in the developing world is to save people from dying of hunger while also trying to halt the spread of COVID-19.”

He suggested that Prime Minister khan’s government has the opportunity to lead the way but without leaving the minorities behind. Otherwise, they may add on top of it all one more crisis, created by religious discrimination and inter-communal strife. John Moorie added, “It is a monumental task to laying before many countries.”

Religious minorities in Pakistan constitute 3 percent of the total population of the country. They include Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Sindhis. Pakistan is notoriously known for its persecution of not only religious minorities but also ethnic minorities within their own country. The forceful conversion programs have often been unleashed against the minorities especially Christians, Sikhs and Hindus living in Pakistan with utmost brutality.

In December 2019, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) had slammed Pakistan’s government stating that their discriminatory legislation has empowered people with “extremist mindsets” to carry out attacks on religious minorities. The CSW, a commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, said that Christian and Hindu communities, especially women and girls in Pakistan are “particularly vulnerable”.

Apart from that Pakistan has also been irresponsible towards it people taking the coronavirus outbreak into the account, as the Chinese pandemic COVID-19 has spread across the country, several mosques have remained opened across Pakistan, especially for Friday namaaz. The Islamic country has reported 5,537 cases and 96 casualties.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala lies about coronavirus tests, deletes tweet after being called out

In the midst of the country’s fight against the Wuhan coronavirus, instead of joining hands with the government in taming the contagion, Congress leaders are busy lying, peddling propaganda and nitpicking to undermine the centre’s efforts to contain the virus from spreading its fatal claws. Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala today brazenly lied through his teeth about the total number of tests conducted to ascertain coronavirus infection in the country.

Following PM Modi’s 7-point message to the nation earlier this morning, Surjewala took to Twitter to weigh in a bunch of his ideas to be followed by the government instead of following the Prime Minister’s suggestions. Surjewala asserted that the principal way of stopping the ominous spread of the virus is through augmenting the testing capability of the country. While there is a grain of truth in Surjewala’s assertion, however, he used wrong figures in his tweet to cast India’s testing capacity in the poor light. Randeep Surjewala said that as of 14th April 2020, India has conducted only 14,376 tests for coronavirus so far. This averages at 197 tests per day in the last 73 days. Furthermore, he enquired what is PM’s plan to increase the testing.

Surjewala’s tweet on number of testing

However, the total number of tests conducted in India till Sunday, April 12, 2020, as per official figures, were 2,06,212. But, since Surjewala was predisposed towards criticising the government, he lowballed the total number of testing and arbitrarily came up with a deceptively low number-14,376, to needlessly mount an attack on the government and corner them on their readiness and capacity to carry out widespread testing.

Perhaps, when mindful Twitter users pointed out the glaring error in Surjewala’s post, he was compelled to delete his tweet. However, undaunted by the criticism from the users for maligning the government with fake figures of testing, an unabashed Surjewala posted another tweet, this time updating the numbers to 2,17,554, but his assertion remained the same.

While there is always a scope of improvement in a nation’s response to a pandemic of such immensity, Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala’s inveterate habit of denigrating the government betrays that no matter how much the government ramps up its testing capability, he would nevertheless criticise them, either by conjuring up fake figures or by using the actual ones, but the propaganda against the government will be carried out in earnest.

Noboborsho: While detractors hail Akbar for the Bengali calendar, Bengalis need to remember Shashanka Deva

I have noticed a peculiar problem with some of the online content related to Noboborsho/Bengali New Year for a couple of years at least. I’m sure you would have seen those cordial content pieces, which talk about how our cherished Bengali Calendar was promulgated by the Mughal ruler Akbar in order to align revenue collection better with the local season cycles. If the problem hasn’t hit you yet, think about this. We are sitting on 1426 BE or Bongabdo, on the verge of welcoming 1427. And the Mughal ruler Akbar’s reign started as recently as 1556 BCE… just around 5 centuries back. I didn’t know if this was shocking or hilarious… or outright sinister!

The Beginning of an era

Bongadbo or the Bengali Era begins in 594 CE. The reigning ruler was Maha Samanta, and later Gaudeshvara, Shashanka or Shashanka Deva. He has variously been deduced to be a feudatory of, or have been descended from, the Later Guptas of Magadha. In either case, he disassociated from Magadha towards the end of the 5th Century CE and established the first historically known independent kingdom of Bengal. It was called the Kingdom of Gauda then, with its capital at Karna Suvarna, modern day Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The earliest archaeological references to Bongabdo are found in a couple of millennium old terracotta Shiva Temples in the villages of Dihargram & Sonatapan in the Bankura district of West Bengal, before the arrival of the Central Asian invaders in Bengal.

The Confusion

Detractors have been trying to credit Bongabdo variously to the 16th century CE Mughal ruler Akbar or an Allauddin Hussain Shah, a ruler of the Bengal Sultanate, striding the 15th & 16th centuries CE.

One wonders, how an entire millennium could have been cooked up into thin air by detractor theorists. Satyam Infotech account book cooks need to take note! The logic presented is, a Hussain Shah or an Akbar would have taken the Hijri Calendar, starting 622 CE, & adapted it to a solar format – to aid in agrarian revenue collection – with some support from existing native calendars. I again wonder why a Shashanka cannot at least figure in such a long list of possibilities.

Have you considered what such a proposition might entail, as against a straight native Indic Bengali Calendar theory? Lunar changes to Solar. Calendar terms, month names etc. change from Arabic/Farsi to Sanskrit/Bengali. This whole shebang is easily & conveniently avoided if we go by the Shashanka route, which is definitely more intuitive. But perhaps water flows against gravity for revisionist theorists.

Real Motive of Detractors

So, what is it actually about? The East Pakistani faction, though endorsing the ‘separate Muslim homeland’ theory, was more comfortable with a Bengali flavour to it. This was what they wanted with a Calendar too. They wanted a Bengali Calendar for sure, which they celebrate with considerable fanfare, now that they have political independence. Puritans might even consider such celebration idolatrous! And it’s in this context that the idea of a native Indic pre-Islamic origin Bengali Calendar may be adding further insult to injury for the fundamentalists. And that’s where emerges the idea of looking for Calendar heroes from Akbar to Hussain Shah.

What are we supposed to do

Now that was their perspective and their fight. But for an Indic Bengali, who cherishes the Bengali cultural framework, in the context of the broader Indic cultural context, & for other Indics as well, it is very important to know the devil & cull it from the cultural mind space without further delay. Honestly, there’s very less scope for any more delay, given how ‘idolators’ are becoming endangered globally with every passing century, decade & year.

That’s where the battle is, salvaging the people & the culture, concept by concept, year by year, if we are to see any semblance of free civilization remaining in the globe… or at least in the Subcontinent.

As a corollary, maybe, reconsider your thoughts on the CAA, if you’re still confused about ‘secular’ propriety. Notwithstanding which camp you belong to, this is plain civilization vs. savagery, and you would need to pick your choose, because though civilization may provide you with choice, savagery would never.

And what do the emergent ‘Bengali nationalists’ do?

Simple, stick to their ideas of Bengali pride but with some sprinkling of real history. What can be more glorious than the idea of a Bengali Calendar promulgated by the very founder of the conception of Bengal/Gauda/Vanga? A quick reading through Shashanka’s politico-military achievements should definitely aid. He was successful in uniting smaller geographical units from all over current West Bengal, Bangladesh, parts of Bihar and Assam. Shouldn’t the last bit be quite enough to quench the sub-national ethos, considering the ordeal of Bengalis under Assam NRC and cultural ordeals of the North East Bengalis in general? That’s some food for thought for such friends of mine.

Shubho Noboborsho

Would wish for a very happy new year to all, with a hope that the Indic civilization shall be able to maintain its originality and defend itself against all invasions, political or cultural, for all times to come.

Trains, Flights suspended May 3 as PM Modi announces extension of nationwide lockdown

All trains and domestic as well as international flights will remain suspended till May 3 as the nationwide lockdown continues amidst Chinese coronavirus outbreak.

On April 14, the Ministry of Railways informed that all premium, Suburban Express, and passenger trains of the Indian Railways will remain non-operational until May 3, 2020. The update came after Prime Minister’s address to nation informing about the extension.

The Railways Ministry has informed that the passengers need to cancel their bookings and that the cancellation will be taken care of by the IRCTC. Further, the refund of the cancelled tickets shall also be credited to the accounts.

Even before the nationwide lockdown, a notification was issued by the Indian Railways cancelling all trains till March 31, starting from March 22 midnight. Bare minimum numbers of suburban trains and Kolkata metro operated till midnight on 22nd March. That included suburban services in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Secunderabad, along with Kolkata Metro.

The trains which had started their journey before 4 AM on 22nd March, ran up to their respective destinations. Railways made adequate arrangements for the passengers in such trains during the journey and also at their destination stations. The movement of good trains continued on the Indian Railway network, to maintain the availability of essential items across the country.

Suspension of Flight Operations

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had also issued a circular stating that all scheduled international passenger services would remain closed until May 3, 2020. The official notice, however, clarified that the travel restrictions imposed due to the Coronavirus pandemic will not apply to international cargo operations and specific flight operations that are approved by the DGCA.

Official Circular issued by the DGCA

Earlier, an Air India official had informed earlier this month that advanced flight booking for both domestic and international air travel via the national carrier had been suspended until April 30. Another senior government official said that Air India would wait for the government’s decision until April 14 and bookings could begin on the same day if the lockdown was not extended

Extension of Nationwide Lockdown

PM Modi began his address by thanking the people of India for following the guidelines and helping in containing the pandemic. He added that while the lockdown has been expensive and an added burden on the economy, it is insignificant against the precious lives of the countrymen.

“Till 3rd May, everyone must stay home and maintain discipline. We must ensure that till 3rd May coronavirus does not spread to any new region which does not have any positive case. If more people test positive in local areas, then it is a cause of concern for us. Hence, we must be more careful regarding hotspots. Identified hotspots should be more careful and those areas which have a possibility of turning into hotspots should be more alert. Newer hotspots will be a challenge to our efforts,” PM Modi emphasised.

Following this, the Railways and Civil Aviation ministries have suspended trains and flights till May 3.

1-week test: PM Modi extends nationwide lockdown, hints conditional relaxations may be allowed in some places after April 20

0

On the last day of the 21-day nationwide lockdown imposed with the aim to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus, PM Modi, in his address to the nation, today announced the extension of lockdown till May 3. However, soon after announcing the extension, the Prime Minister indicated at easing of lockdown restrictions in places where there is no hotspot after April 20.

“There will be a review of every town, police station, every district and every state by April 20 to see how lockdown rules are being followed there and how much that area has protected itself from the infection,” he said.

Speaking further, the Prime Minister said: “Till 20th April, all districts, localities, states will be closely monitored, as to how strictly they are implementing norms. States which will not let hotspots increase, they could be allowed to let some important activities resume, but with certain conditions.”

Thanking the people of India for following the guidelines and helping in containing the pandemic, PM Modi furthered that the restrictions on nationwide lockdown will be even more stringent in coming weeks. “Whichever area succeeds in this 1-week test, will get some conditional relief and relaxation. Some important and essential movements may be allowed in these areas after 20th,” PM Modi said.

Lockdown extension in India

Urging the citizens to keep their patience and strength, PM Modi asked for support in seven things. He urged the people to take extra care of the elders in the homes especially those who have a prior illness as they are more susceptible to coronavirus. “Second thing, make sure the social distancing is maintained during the extended lockdown. Do not step out of the house without a mask. Third, follow guidelines issued by Ayush Ministry to improve your immunity. Download the Aarogya Setu app to help contain the coronavirus pandemic. Try to help as many poor people as you could. Do not terminate your employees in such time and finally, respect the frontline workers who are fighting the pandemic like the doctors, nurses, healthcare staff, policemen,” PM Modi said.

US approves defence deal for anti-ship missiles and torpedoes worth $155 million with India

0

On Monday, the US Congress was informed by the Trump administration about a defence deal wherein ten AGM-84L Harpoon Block II air-launch missiles, sixteen MK 54 All Up Round Lightweight Torpedoes and three MK 54 Exercise Torpedoes will be sold to India for a whopping $155 million, following a request by the Central Government.

Hardware Capabilities

The Harpoon air-launch missiles supplied by Boeing can be mounted on a P-8I aircraft to safeguard critical sea lanes through anti-surface warfare missions. The Torpedoes provided by Raytheon will help conduct anti-submarine warfare missions.

India will use the enhanced capability as a deterrent to regional threats and strengthen its homeland defense. India will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces”, the Pentagon was quoted as saying. It added that the defence deal would not disrupt the ‘military balance’ in the region and reiterated the significance of the sale of torpedoes and launch missiles in supporting foreign policy and strengthening the capabilities of a major defence partner.

Deepening Ties

Following a meeting at the Hyderabad House on February 25, Prime Minister Modi and US President Trump issued joint statements resolving to deepen the partnership between the two largest democracies of the world. In a very progressive partnership deal between the countries, key agreements for defence purchase and MoUs were signed.

PM Modi emphasised that he and US President Trump want the India-US partnership to be a comprehensive global strategic partnership. Trump also asserted that the defence cooperation of India and the US would be expanded to purchase advanced American military equipment, including Apache and MH-60 Romeo helicopters for US $3 Billion worth and enhance India-US joint defence capabilities.

Babasaheb Ambedkar: A scholar, a Nationalist and a visionary wrongly appropriated by the Left

Whenever life throws up challenges and puts our spirits down, our hearts and minds are on the lookout for an inspiration. An icon who offers hope. An icon whose struggle that one can relate to and derive strength from. If there exists such an icon who resides in the hearts and minds of millions of Indians, it is none other Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, for he remains an eclectic personality and a man of wisdom, who continues to be relevant in our personal and social lives.

But over time, this great man has been appropriated by the political class and ideological groups that he vehemently opposed. What is saddening is that this revolutionary leader, who set the path for all Indians, has been reduced to a caste leader. As we mark the 129th anniversary of Babasaheb, it is high time we break the shackles tied to this man and bring out the unknown or rather deliberately concealed ideas and wisdom of this man.

Babasaheb Ambedkar: A scholar par excellence

Most of us know Ambedkar as the person who gave shape to our Constitution. When he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Drafting Committee, he was 57. But his scholarly prowess could be seen just when he was 25 years old. His doctoral thesis on Castes in India brings out a scientific understanding of caste in which he elaborates on its origins, mechanism and development.

Often we hear the terms like ‘Manuvaad’, ‘Brahmanvaad’ and ‘Jativaad’ from our friends who claim to be champions of equality and justice while all they do is peddle hate against one particular community. If one reads Ambedkar in totem, it would be easy to call out this bluff. While he is severely critical of Manu in the initial portions, he however goes on to say that it would have been impossible for one man (Manu) to ordain the law of caste. He says that Manu was an upholder of the institution, but could not have ordained the present order. Ambedkar says that Manu’s work ended with the “codification of existing caste rules and the preaching of Caste Dharma.”

For all the hatred that is perpetrated against one community, especially in Tamil Nadu, the following quote from Ambedkar might come as a total surprise to the Dravidian machinery (politicians, intellectuals and media) that thrives on singling out this community for all the misdeeds in society. Speaking about Brahmins, here is what Ambedkar had to say:

“Thespread and growth of the Caste system is too gigantic a task to be achieved by the power or cunning of an individual or of a class. Similar in argument is the theory that the Brahmins created the Caste. After what I have said regarding Manu, I need hardly say anything more, except to point out that it is incorrect in thought and malicious in intent. The Brahmins may have been guilty of many things, and I dare say they were, but the imposing of the caste system on the non-Brahmin population was beyond their mettle.”

One of the greatest books ever written in the history of humankind would undoubtedly be “Pakistan or Partition of India: Indian Political What is What” reading which will give an understanding of not just modern Indian history but also contemporary Indian politics. In this book, Dr.Ambedkar provides an unapologetic take on the subject and analyses every point of view with such astuteness. Dr.Ambedkar doesn’t pull any punches in the discussion about Islam, Muslim League and Congress.

Such was his grit, nuance and scholastic approach towards every subject that he was an authority on – be it law, economic, society or religion.

Babasaheb Ambedkar: A believer in the cultural and spiritual unity of Bharat

For every nationalist, there will always be two legends who they revere – Swami Vivekananda and Babasaheb Ambedkar. That is because both of them believed in the spiritual and cultural unity of this great country. In his paper that he presented at the Colombia University Babasaheb details out the cultural unity of India. According to Ambedkar, India possessed a “deeper and a much more fundamental unity – the indubitable cultural unity that covers the land from end to end.” He says that spirituality is the binding fabric of this nation. Swami Vivekananda too says that the “national union of India must be a gathering up of its scattered spiritual forces”.  He adds that “a nation in India must be a union of those whose hearts beat to the same spiritual tune”. Thus one can say that the idea of India that Babasaheb and Swami Vivekananda envisioned was that of an India that is rooted in spirituality and religion and that the unity of this land transcends race and language.

Contrary to the language spoken by the Dravidian and Left groups, Ambedkar opposed geographical nationalism as a basis for defining nationhood. He also refuted the Aryan Invasion theory, a subject that is dear to heart for the “Dravidian” machinery (media, cinema, politicians, intellectuals). According to Dr.Ambedkar, both Aryans and Dravidians are the original descendants of India. This was the same position taken by other personalities like Swami Vivekananda and Dayanand Saraswati. Having studied the Vedas, Ambedkar comes to a conclusion that there is no evidence in the Vedas of any invasion in India by Aryan race. Rig Veda was seen by Ambedkar as having a “sense of unity and consciousness” that merged different tribes to form an Indo-Aryan nation. Not just that, Ambedkar had even called for making Sanskrit the official language of India. The proposal moved by late LK Maitra in the Constituent Assembly, was supported by Ambedkar. Had he been alive today, he would bury his hand in his face looking at the anti-Sanskrit rhetoric being perpetrated by the Dravidian machinery.

A timeless legend

If there existed a man in flesh and blood, who not just emancipated the lives of the oppressed but also breathed life into a new nation, it is Babasaheb Ambedkar. He is a man to whom no amount of titles would do justice to the legend that he is. Babasaheb was not just an epitome of knowledge. He was a visionary. If not for Babasaheb and the Constitution he bequeathed upon us, India wouldn’t have had a President and a Prime Minister rising from such humble backgrounds. Had Babasaheb been alive today, he would have certainly felt proud about this Government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 as both these actions provide for equality and justice for the Dalits.

Honouring the legend, the present Modi Government has taken various initiatives. Be it the BHIM app or the world class Dr.Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi or developing the five major landmarks associated with Babasaheb’s life into the “Panchteerth”, this Government has rightfully accorded a place to one of the greatest Bharat Ratna. As we remember Babasaheb on his birth anniversary, let us strengthen our resolve to establish equality and social justice.

West Bengal: Hospital employee ostracised by villagers and denied meeting with mother over fears of coronavirus infection

0

A 24-year-old employee named Chitra Mondal working in the accounts department of Beleghata ID and BG Hospital was reportedly denied entry in her village in Ranaghat in Nadia when she went to visit her mother and sister. A group of 100 villagers stopped the car provided by the hospital and told her that she could not visit her house. As such, Chitra had to spend the night at a relative’s place.

Denied entry to village

Chitra Mondal stated that she tried to pacify the villagers by informing them that she had followed sanitisation guidelines before reaching the village. However, the group was unmoved. “My mother and sister are fearing ostracism by the villagers. No one is interacting with them. I fear what will happen if they are not allowed to procure essential items from the grocery shops at the village,’’ Chitra sighed.

Deputy chief of the Noapara-Mushundi gram panchayat Nabin Chandra Mondal said that several villagers visited his house and asserted that they will not allow Chitra to enter the village. He reportedly tried to convince the villagers but the majority of them seemed resolute about their decision. It is important to mention that the woman works at a hospital that has been treating the maximum number of Coronavirus patients. This perhaps had triggered fears amongst the villagers about her presence in the village.

Difficulties for frontline workers

Case of ground-level healthcare workers and frontline staffers facing misbehaviour and even abuse by locals have been frequently surfacing since the coronavirus crisis started. Earlier, the news of staffers from Air India facing ostracisation had surfaced. Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier reacted strongly to the reports of AIIMS doctors facing misbehaviour by landlords and had stated that no landlord can ask doctors to vacate their homes. He had instructed police personnel to ensure safety and well being of doctors fighting the pandemic and had ordered the Delhi Police to take action against such landlords.
