Son of a poor tea seller set to become IAS officer after ranking 82 in UPSC

Deshaladan Charan the son of a tea seller is all set to become an IAS officer after he ranked a very impressive 82 in the recently announced UPSC results. Deshaladan hails from Sumalai village near Rajasthan’s city of Jaisalmer. His father a humble tea seller named Kushaldan Charan, runs a tea stall in Jaisalmer’s Chungi Naka square, and has had to go through various hardships in life.

Ever since his childhood, Deshaladan was considered a meritorious student and his father as a result left no stones unturned to support him at every step. When he was finding it difficult to fund his son’s education, Kushaldan took out a loan to make sure the studies didn’t stop.

Apart from having a humble upbringing, which further adds credence to Deshaladan’s ability, is the lack of good higher education facilities near Jaisalmer, despite which he managed such a good result.

This result by Deshaladan hasn’t just provided immense pride to his family members, it has also sent ripples of joy throughout his village.

Deshaladan’s story isn’t the only such success saga which has graced the UPSC examination.

It was reported in April last year that, Nirish Rajput the son of a tailor master, had cracked the IAS post by securing a 370 rank in UPSC. The 31 year old Nirish too battled poverty and used to live in a modest 300 square feet house in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district. Earlier he used to work odd jobs to make ends meet.

In another inspiring story, it was reported how Govind Jaiswal a son of a rickshaw puller had bagged a 48 in his very first attempt back in 2006. In order to keep his son’s dream alive, the father had sold his only plot of land to send his kid to Delhi for studies. Come 2016, Govind was the District Magistrate of East Delhi area.

The list of inspiring stories also extends to Ummul Kher who was disowned by her parents for wishing to study beyond the 8th standard. Despite suffering from a fragile bone disorder, she bagged an all India rank of 420.

The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi has announced that there will be no distribution of free rice if villages are not open defecation free and clean.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Kiran Bedi has stated that the distribution of free rice to people shall be conditional to the certification of the village being open defecation free and free of strewn garbage and plastics by submitting a joint certificate given by the MLA and the Commune Commissioner of the commune panchayat.

Bedi has set a deadline for 4 weeks to the concerned authorities in the villages to keep their surroundings clean. She has released an official statement expressing her displeasure at sanitary conditions of the villages in the Union Territory and has stated that the community leaders in the area have not shown participation in Swachh campaigns to keep their villages clean.

Kiran Bedi has announced in the statement that the directions have been issued to the Director of Civil Supplies in this regard and villages will be given a notice till 31st May to make their villages clean. She has also added that the distribution of rice will be made after the certification.

Kiran Bedi shared pictures from her visit to the villages in the UT and expressed her displeasure at the present sanitary conditions of the villages.

About half the population of Puducherry is dependent upon the free rice distribution scheme by the government. The LG has stated that this action will inoculate a sense of responsibility amongst the people and hasten the objective of the Swachh Grameen Union Territory.

Update: The order issued by Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi now stands withdrawn.

Sacked UP Minority Commission member arrested for impersonating politicians

0

Kunwar Afzal Chaudhary, a former Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission member was arrested by Ghaziabad police on Thursday for impersonation. A local BJP leader, Chaudhary was appointed to the commission in February of this year.

As per a TOI report, Chaudhary was accused of pressurising government officials to carry out his tasks by misusing his position as the minority commission’s member. Besides this, as per Ghaziabad SSP Vaibhav Krishna, he and other senior officials used to receive calls from him, with a demand that they do tasks for him which weren’t “in accordance with the law”. Chaudhary has also been accused of enriching himself after successfully extracting the said favours.

A Business Standard report has claimed that the demands included illegal activities like getting two assault accused off the hook and asking Ghaziabad’s District Magistrate Ritu Maheswari, to rule in favour of a retired official in a land matter. In the assault case, the two individuals were accused of thrashing a UP roadways bus conductor and to get them off the hook, Chaudhary unsuccessfully called up Ghaziabad’s SSP.

One of the techniques used by him to put further pressure, besides taking in a strong manner, was impersonating powerful politicians. Some of the politicians impersonated include UP’s deputy CM Dinesh Sharma, former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and former Gujarat CM Shankar Singh Vaghela.

The authorities soon were suspicious of his action and the police launched an investigation four days prior to his arrest. They produced a four page report on the basis of their findings, following which he was sacked from his position as minority commission member by the Yogi government.

Besides Chaudhary, the police also arrested his accomplice Krishna Kumar. During their investigation the police recovered five mobile phones, sim cards and a Mercedes. The charges framed against him include that of cheating, impersonation and forgery.

Gun for hire, ‘The Wire’ misfires, targets Piyush Goyal again with falsities and lies

The leftist propaganda website, ‘The Wire’, seems to have developed a penchant for hitjobs, done with blatant lies, half-truths, and concocted stories. Today, they are back with another hitjob that targets Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Earlier this week, we had predicted that a hit job against Goyal was in the pipeline about his professional and business activities before he became a cabinet minister. Once again, we were right.

What is interesting is that The Wire is back to attacking Piyush Goyal after Congress took the mantle from them. Congress had come up with a press conference that entirely focused on business activities of Piyush Goyal, trying to insinuate wrongdoings almost in The Wire-style. The press conference followed after the first hitjob by The Wire was largely ignored by the mainstream media after it was comprehensively busted by us.

Perhaps the Congress party thought that instead of outsourcing the job, they should do it themselves. However, the party in a way ended up giving away the hint that their allegations were weak because, in their own documents that they shared in the press conference, it was clearly mentioned that Piyush Goyal and his wife had resigned from all such companies before he became the cabinet minister. This was done to maintain highest standards of ethics and avoid any conflict of interest, which actually displayed good conduct on the part of the Minister.

Coming to the latest hit job by The Wire, the premise of this new falsehood stands on wafer-thin ice. Rohini Singh, the author of this fantastical story alleges that the Prime Minister’s office was kept in the dark about Piyush Goyal selling his shares in a privately held company Flashnet.

The story by ‘The Wire’ falsely alleges that the sale of shares took place in September 2014. Documents accessed by us tell a different tale altogether. We have found out that the sale took place prior to the declaration dated 25th July 2014 and the entire sale price was also received by Piyush Goyal in his bank before this date.

We spoke to a CA and he confirmed that if the shares were already sold and the amount received before the declaration then it obviously can’t contain the value of shares since it would be a double accounting. The CA also confirmed that when a company is valued, the “Fair Market Value” needs to be worked out, and for that, all assets and liabilities must be considered at market value, and not at book value. He also opined that typically, land and building book value (i.e. the cost of acquisition) is much lower than the market price. The same can happen in case of shares held as an investment.

BJP spokesperson confirmed that the “sale was made at full market value as per third party, independent, expert valuation.”

The report also tries to cast aspersions on the valuation of the company. It relies on the net worth of the company as declared in the 2015 filings. But Singh “forgets” to account for one aspect: Net worth in financial statements and in company filings is shown at book value i.e. at cost of acquisition. Land, Building, Property, Investment in shares, all are always recorded at cost in a company’s balance sheet, and as per prudential accounting norms, unrealised gains due to increase in market value are never recorded in the books of accounts.

However, when a company is sold, its real value needs to be determined, which entails taking into account the market value of all such assets. We have found that the valuation of the company was done by an independent, third-party expert who valued the assets at fair market value.

Thus, Rohini’s innuendo that a company whose net worth was just Rs 10 cr was sold for around Rs 48 cr does not hold ground because Rs 10 cr is the book value, whereas Rs 48 Cr is arrived at after considering market values, and is based on a valuation by an expert, not a journalist who was fired from her job for not doing her job right.

The Wire also insinuated conflict of interest because Piramal is a “billionaire with substantial interests in the infrastructure sector including power”. The fact is, Piramal indeed doesn’t appear to be directly in power sector. Their NBFC arm regularly lends to all sectors. This can’t be called being a billionaire with stakes in the power sector and hence, their conflict of interest theory also doesn’t hold water.

So essentially, it does seem that a professional like Piyush Goyal, who had a successful investment banking career before he became a minister has still not learnt the art of living without working which many Congressmen inspired by Rahul Gandhi have learned to do. It seems Piyush Goyal is being maligned and targeted because Congress believes that everyone in politics should be like Rahul Gandhi without ever having done serious work for a living.

The Congress supported by The Wire and Rohini Singh have adopted the same strategy for all their hit jobs. Make assertions based on lies. Selectively quote the truth. Word the allegations carefully to avoid culpability. And attempt to link financials of a future date much after the Minister has left the company, to show some sort of impropriety that never existed.

Perhaps ‘The Wire’ should try delving into facts rather than being political hit men.

Tripura government to hand over all cases related to chit fund scams to the CBI

0

The Tripura Government has decided to hand over all the 74 cases related to the Chit fund scam to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The cases were being probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Tripura High Court, until now.

An official release by the Home Department of the state government stated, “Further, the State Government has decided to hand over the remaining 63 NBFC cases that are being investigated by the SIT for further CBI investigation. Accordingly, a proposal has already been sent to the Centre, Department of Personnel and Training, on April 19 requesting for investigation by CBI in respect of 63 NBFC cases.”

The head of SIT and Inspector General of Police, K.V. Srijesh said, “We have almost completed our investigation. Only seven to eight cases are pending. Now the State government has recommended all the cases to be taken up by the CBI. There is nothing much (to say) from our side.”

Former Finance Minister, Badal Choudhury, said he would resign as an MLA if any links are discovered to prove his involvement in the scams. He further stated, “Rose Valley chief Goutam Kundu is in CBI custody now. I asked them to get details of those involved in chit fund scam in Agartala. There are many in Tripura who took money from Rose Valley. The real culprits should be brought to justice.”

The chit fund scam is one of the many controversies which dented ex-Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s clean image. BJP President Amit Shah had claimed during his campaign ahead of the Assembly elections that many Tripura Ministers who were involved in the scam would be sent to jail should the BJP come to power.

Two pro-Pakistan Kashmiri men arrested for hacking over 500 Indian websites

0

As per media reports, Delhi Police on Friday arrested two alleged pro-Pakistan Kashmiri hackers in Punjab who were involved in entrenching into over 500 Indian websites, including some government websites, police said.

The two, have been identified as Shahid Malla, 28, a B-Tech student and Adil Hussain Teli, 20, who is a BCA student in a Punjab-based university, said PS Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police.(Special cell)

Times of India infogrphic

The two were apparently part of an “anti-national hacking group” called Team Hackers Third Eye and had allegedly broken into over 500 Indian websites, including that of J&K Bank in January this year, police said. They are being grilled on the identity of their associates in Pakistan and India.

Police also claimed they were linked with operatives of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency. An officer identified the Pakistani’s suspected to be in contact with Malla and Hussain as Faisal Afzal and Amir Muzaffar, who belong to the pro-Pak hacking group called Pak Cyber Attacker, or PCA. The group, based in Lahore and Dubai, is suspected to have hacked thousands of Indian websites since 2016.

Laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards, internet dongles and memory devices recovered from them will be examined by the Delhi Police in detail to ascertain their role in anti-state activities.

After receiving a tip-off about the suspects from a military intelligence unit, Delhi Police formed a special team led by additional DCP KPS Malhotra to gather information and track the suspects.

An intelligence source said that the two were found to be encouraging internet users of J&K to bypass the state imposed ban on social media by using means through which their online activities can not be traced.

According to previous reports, instances of Kashmiri youth misusing social media to allegedly threaten police and other government officials or run a ‘smear campaign’ against them had done the rounds which had forced the authorities to put a ban on social media in the state.

Hatred in Bengal: Calls for murder of BJP and RSS workers on Social Media

A terrible hate is festering in the heart of Bengal. As a consequence, perhaps, of Mamata Bannerjee’s misrule and the communist stronghold over academia, a section of the youth is being drawn toward violence and Naxalism. Take a look at this for example:

A typical Facebook post by a section of Youth in Bengal

You might think, especially if you are fed with the liberal narrative during your formative years, that support for Naxalism is not a big issue, even though Naxal terrorists have caused the maximum casualties. You may think you’re supporting “people’s movement” but this support for a murderous ideology finally renders you bereft of any humanity.

You want your daily dose of blood. CRPF jawans being killed fails to quench your blood thirst. You want more. Here is the same person celebrating murder:

A communist Bengali celebrating murder of a Hindu worker

The twisted rhetoric of liberals, which dubs RSS as fascists without any probable reason has led to the dehumanization of the average Swayamsevak. Communists and leftists are often seen celebrating the murder of RSS workers, and this particular person from Bengal is no exception.

But this person epitomizes the problem, and the mindset. In one of his articles on ‘Youth ki Awaaz’, the said person mounts a rather complicated defense for Maoist terrorism and virtually calls for waging war against the ‘semi-feudal’, ‘semi-colonial’, ‘Brahmanical’ Indian state while whitewashing all the crimes that the maoists have committed over the years.

Raghav Bahl, the founder of The Quint, has also invested heavily in Youth Ki Awaaz. The Quint too had once ended up publishing articles of a person who wished for the assassination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Such people are unfortunately shaping the narrative and getting support from people with deep pockets.

However, to be fair to Youth Ki Awaaz, it appears that they have a policy that allows everyone to post articles on their website, but least they can do is to stop giving platform to a person who celebrates murders and violent attacks. Here is another peek into this genocidal mindset:

Violent and genocidal mindset of a leftist

Of course, the hatred is not limited just to a single person. Certain others are much less subtly calling for the murder of people associated with saffron organizations.

Call for mass murders of BJP supporters on social media

The hatred towards the BJP and RSS is accompanied by a xenophobic hatred towards North Indians as well. In the meme, the Biharis are depicted as dogs who are taking over Kolkata by pushing over the Bengalis:

Hatred and Xenophobia spread on the social media

Linguistic chauvinists are sowing seeds of division in Bengal as well. However, they have not called for violence against anyone yet, but with the leftists lurking around and willing to support any such move, the day can’t be far away.

Bengal has been witness to violent politics for decades now. But even with its bloody history, the youth calling for war against the Indian state and murder of BJP and RSS workers is indeed troubling. But we all know where the priorities of Mamata Banerjee lie.

Whitewashing a crime – how exodus of Kashmiri Pandits is being blamed on Hindus instead of on Islamists

0

Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth, said Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Though there are many opinions on who exactly said these words, the words are a depressing and scary reality. A blatant lie, often garbed in attires of nuance, perspective and doubt, often does end up becoming the widely believed truth.

We have seen how “brilliantly” and successfully the Godhra carnage that saw 59 Hindus, including women and children being burnt alive, was blamed on the victims themselves (turning it sometimes into accident, and sometimes saying they ‘provoked’ the local Muslims). How carefully orchestrated media propaganda, subtle wordplay and clever imagery managed to shift the focus from the brutal massacre to trivial issues over the years is perhaps one of the best examples of what repeating a lie can achieve.

Another such painful incident that is often turned, twisted and ignored to the extent of totally absolving the actual perpetrators of any wrongdoing is the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. There have been denials, counter blames and facade of goal shifting over the years, not only by powerful politicians who were at the helm of governance but also by prominent voices in the media and society who frequently join the cause, the great cause of whitewashing of one of the most brutal stories of hatred, mass violence directed against a minority community in modern India, the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.

Time and again politicians and media persons keep denying it and giving lame excuses. Political leaders have done it. Digvijay Singh had once stated that Kashmiri Pandits were unnecessarily forced to leave the Valley by Jagmohan and that Hindus and Muslims lived together for Centuries in Kashmir. The idea has long been propagated by the ‘liberal’ cabal. More recently, it surfaced again, with the same tones, that Governor Jagmohan was to be blamed for the exodus of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits.

Holocaust deniers of India
Holocaust denier of the same feather flock together

This time it is columnist Tavleen Singh, who has spread fake photographs and wrong information about Yogi Adityanath earlier, and former Samajwadi Party leader and currently self-styled journalist Shahid Siddiqui who tried to weave their theory of exodus around then Governor Jagmohan.

While Tavleen stated that 300,000 pandits left the valley overnight because the governor could not control the violence, Siddiqui went a step further and stated that it was the Governor who ‘planned’ the ‘migration’.

Note the clever wordplay here, while Tavleen uses ‘left the valley’, Siddiqui uses ‘migration’. In a subtle way, the word ‘migration’ turns the forced exodus into a more docile, voluntary, even preferred travel from one place to another. One word, when repeated enough times, will make ‘exodus’ obsolete. That is how it works.

That is how it has worked in Godhra Massacre case too. Fortunately, there are people who have lived those times and experienced that pain. Social Media is a double-edged sword. The ideas were soon countered with arguments and recollections of people who have experienced the pain of the exodus, either themselves or through loved ones.

Journalist and author Rahul Pandita explained the events related to Jagmohan and the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in a series of tweets. He stated that on the night of the mass exodus, Governor Jagmohan was not even there in Srinagar. He was in Jammu.

Mosques in Shrinagar were openly calling for the killing of pandits, threats and attacks were underway and the situation was grim. By the time Jagmohan reached Srinagar on January 21, 1990, many had already left and those who had not, were leaving in groups slowly.

Pandita states that when a prominent Kashmiri Pandit leader HN Jattu wrote an open letter to militant leaders not to kill pandits, the JKLF had responded by killing his associate and dumping his body in a drain. He shared an excerpt with statements from Ghulam Mohammad Sofi, the editor of Srinagar Times, from 1997.

A recount of the times when Pandits were forced out of Kashmir by Islamists

The killings happened in ones or twos, the threats were blared out from mosques. The fact that people do not leave their homeland hurriedly to live in refugee camps unless they are forced to do so, does not register with many.

There are several documented recollections and statements which emphasize the way the exodus began, the Pandits were being targetted and threatened long before they decided to save their lives and flee from an Islamist mob and apathetic state government.

As shared by writer and blogger Dimple Kaul, Ashish Nandy of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies stated, “When Hindus began to be exterminated systematically in Kashmir and began to leave in large numbers, our secularist friends said then Governor Jagmohan had deliberately organised the forced migration. I would like to see people leaving their ancestral homes with a sack in hand just because the governor asked them to do so. When questioned later as to how the killings of Hindus were not condemned strongly enough, some of them said newspapers had refused to carry their statements.”

No exodus happens overnight. Hundreds of thousands of Kashmiri Pandits did not become refugees in their own country because a governor asked them to. Ex-Governor Jagmohan in his own words has recalled how bad the situation in Kashmir was when he was asked to and join there urgently. Even if one believes the secular argument for a moment and considers Jagmohan was responsible, why then the killings of Kashmiri Pandits continued through the 1990s and later? 23 pandits were massacred in Nandimarg in 2003. There were reports of how the massacre was aided by the local policemen who later tried to hush it up.

When one sees the adulation and coverage the slain terrorist Burhan Wani received by the media, it becomes easier to understand how brilliantly the story of Kashmiri Pandit exodus would have been ignored and whitewashed for all these years. Till date, media defends stones pelters and condemns soldiers who get injured trying to protect lives.

Kashmir is the centre of a thousand turmoils. There is article 370, terrorism, external interference and a dozen others. But at the base of all these lies one reason, radical Islamism. Blaming Jagmohan, blaming the army or anyone would not solve the issue. Kashmiri Pandits became refugees in their own countries because the state machinery could not tackle the radical elements. Kashmir will remain the centre of thousand turmoils till the root cause of radical Islamism continues to persist.

But as earlier noted by an article on OpIndia, this whitewashing is part of the larger attempt to rewrite history. To quote from the article and to modify it to suit this Jagmohan conspiracy and latest incidents:

“The Lutyens liberals grudgingly have to blame Jinnah for the 1947 partition, despite them wanting to blame only the RSS. They don’t want to blame any Jinnah again. So if and when Kashmir gets azadi, the blame shall rest entirely with the Hindus. From a Hindu Jagmohan to the ‘Hindu army’ that ties a Kashmiri Muslim to jeep.

Burhan Wani will be the Bhagat Singh in the history textbooks of Islamic State of Kashmir, and our Lutynes liberals are working towards the first draft of that chapter.”

Non-bailable case filed against Facebook user who wanted all BJP voters shot dead

0

A Facebook user named Deepak Sankaranarayanan was slapped with a non-bailable case by the Kerala police, for a post where he called for the murder of all Indians who voted for the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

As reported by Indian Express, Deepak who is believed to be an employee of HP based in Bengaluru, wrote a Facebook post in Malayalam with reference to the Kathua rape case. In the post he wrote that “Justice should prevail, even if it involves shooting to death that 31 per cent, which is seven times the casualty of World War II, that objects to justice.”

It was a direct defamation of BJP voters (31% referring to the vote share BJP could garner in 2014 elections) and a call for genocide. He ended this segment of his hate post by pontificating about democracy.

The hate speech was soon noticed by various social media users who strongly proceeded to condemn him. Here’s one such instance:

Despite the dangerous nature of his comments, he received support from various leftists on social media:

Support for him also extended to the Kerala Finance Minister who publicly backed him in a Facebook post by claiming that Deepak’s words were twisted. He also supposedly issued a statement in his support on Twitter:

Besides getting support from leftists, Deepak was also helped by a section of the media who hid the true gravity of his statement. Hindustan Times reported as if someone was booked only for ‘blaming’ Kathua rape on BJP voters, while there was a call for murder of millions of people.

Following all this following the uproar over his comments, Deepak had issued an apology on 16 April, which though didn’t prevent a complaint against him by BJP’s state media coordinator on Thursday. Following this, the cyber cell booked him for promoting enmity among religious groups. The police has claimed that other sections would be added to his case following investigation.

Chinese state media gives prominence to Modi-Xi meet, hoping to open new chapter in Sino-Indian ties

0

In an attempt to ameliorate the ties between the two countries Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, held the two-day informal summit in the central Chinese city of Wuhan during which both the leaders tried to work out a new criterion for the bilateral ties bogged down with a host of disputes and differences. This comes as a historic transmutation considering the strained relationship the countries shared especially after the 73-day-long Doklam standoff last year.

In a pre-departure statement, Prime Minister Modi said he and President Xi will review the developments in Sino-Indian relations from a strategic and long-term perspective.

“President Xi and I will exchange views on a range of issues of bilateral and global importance. We will discuss our respective visions and priorities for national development, particularly in the context of current and future international situation,” Modi said. The summit is being seen as an effort by India and China to rebuild trust and improve ties.

After their first informal meeting at the Sabarmati Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat in 2014, the famous East Lake in the central Chinese city of Wuhan was where the two leaders spent most of the time. This is where officials said, the two leaders spent most of time interacting with each other with one-on-one conversations focussing on global, regional and bilateral issues.

Confirming the importance of the event, the Chinese state media has been giving a lot of prominence to Modi-Xi summit by featuring the news and development prominently in their outlets. The front pages and home pages of state controlled media reflected this.

Global Times, an English-language Chinese newspaper with focus on international affairs, featured Modi-Xi news prominently on their home page:

The Modi-Xi meeting made top headlines in People’s Daily too, which is the official newspaper of the Chinese communist party, ahead of the news about North and South Korea ending their hostilities:

The front page of Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the People’s Republic of China also featured the news prominently, mentioning that Xi expects meeting with Modi to open new chapter in China India ties.

Homepage of Xinhua News as on 1:00 PM on 28th April 2018 (IST)

Time will show us how much of this prolonged effort extended from our PM’s side helps India on the ground but both sides have indicated that the meeting is aimed at giving an “honest try” by the two leaders to work out an understanding at the top on the future course of relations.
