Washington DC: Pro-Palestine group releases insects and sets off fire alarms at Watergate Hotel where Israeli PM Netanyahu was staying, dye fountains red, over 200 arrested

On Tuesday (23rd July), US Capitol Police arrested over 200 pro-Palestine protesters who reportedly stormed and seized the US Congressional building where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was slated to address a joint meeting a day later.

According to unverified videos circulating on social media, pro-Palestine protesters on Wednesday have reportedly dyed multiple fountains near the Capitol Hill blood-red. It is also claimed, in the video, that they have cast projections demanding the arrest of Netanyahu, describing him as a “war criminal”.

Additionally, a DC-based pro-Palestine group named ‘Palestinian Youth Movement’ has claimed that it released mealworms and insects inside the Watergate Hotel where Netanyahu is staying during his current US visit. Taking to X and Instagram, they have released a purported video claiming that last night they released mealworms and maggots on the Israeli delegation’s ‘war table’. They also claimed to have released crickets all around the hotel building.

In their post, they further claimed that they manufactured chaos last night at the hotel where Netanyahu and other Israeli delegations are staying. In their post on Instagram, the group further claimed that they triggered multiple fire alarms on several floors to ensure that Netanyahu and US lawmakers could not rest properly before his joint address to the US Congress.

The post added, “May their dreams be haunted by the death of our people and decay of their society.”

It is further being claimed that the pro-Palestine protesters have been peddling anti-Israel and anti-Netanyahu posts on Telegram accusing them of having “BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS”.

“On the night before the Congressional betrayal of the masses of the world, citizens of conscience in DC sent a clear message to the ruling elite: Congress and Netanyahu have blood on their hands. Multiple fountains around Capitol Hill were dyed red and projections were cast demanding the arrest of war criminal Netanyahu. This entire imperial Zionist core is responsible for the death of thousands of Palestinian souls. The people of DC and the US refuse to allow these corrupt politicians to continue their genocidal legacy without marking them with the true color of their actions: blood red,” the purported message read.

The group also projected the message ‘Wanted. Arrest war criminal Netyananahu’ and a portrait of the Israeli PM on the facade of the Watergate Hotel building, and banners with the same message were hung across the city at various places, including the Capitol.

Meanwhile, the US agency shared a post on X confirming that it has arrested hundreds of protesters who besieged the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building. It stated that they were arrested for “Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding” adding that it’s against the law to demonstrate in congressional buildings.

Apart from the US Congressional building, the US agencies also enhanced the security of the Watergate Hotel where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is staying during his visit to D.C. as large mobs of pro-Palestinian activists gathered around the building raising xenophobic and anti-Israel remarks even calling for Netanyahu’s death. Several videos are doing rounds on social media in which the protesters, gathered outside Netanyahu’s place of stay during the US, could be heard raising slogans like “Allahu Akbar! Hamas!”, “Jewish motherf***ers!”, “We’re gonna kill all of you!” and “We’re gonna burn you!”.

As per reports, the protesters also raised banners reading “WAR CRIMINAL STAYS HERE” and banged pots and pans outside the hotel until late into the night. They also raised calls for his arrest.

It is pertinent to note that Netanyahu’s US visit to address the US Congress was arranged weeks ago at the instigation of the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson. Since then, anti-Israel groups have been organizing for weeks to protest against his speech at the Joint Session of Congress.

As per reports, the protesters include a broad range of groups, mostly leftwing while some of them also include Jewish groups calling for an end to the War in Gaza.

Among those organising the main rally include Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, Jewish Voice for Peace, Code Pink, the US Palestinian Community Network, the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), the People’s Forum, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, as reported by the Guardian.

‘Judicial impropriety’: Justice BR Gavai-led SC bench expresses displeasure as another bench hears the same case, refers the matter to CJI

On Wednesday (24th July), a Supreme Court bench led by Justice BR Gavai halted the contempt proceedings initiated by it against the DDA Vice Chairman over an illegal tree felling case. Strikingly, while halting the contempt proceedings, the bench expressed displeasure noting that another bench led by Justice AS Oka took up the same contempt case later. The bench also lamented stating that the other bench didn’t adhere to “judicial proprietary”.

During today’s proceedings, Justice Gavai pointed out that it was his bench that first initiated the contempt proceedings against DDA on 24th April. He noted that it would have been appropriate if Justice Oka-led bench sought clarifications from the Chief Justice of India before initiating contempt proceedings against the DDA on the same cause of action later on 14th May.

Justice Gavai remarked, “The other bench has not adhered to judicial propriety, but we are…the appropriate course for any bench would have been to refer the matter to the CJI…ultimately, it is the Chief Justice who is the Master of the Roster.”

Subsequently, the three-judge bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, Prashant Kumar Mishra, and KV Viswanathan referred the matter to the CJI for clarification.

The background of the row

It is pertinent to note that Justice Gavai’s bench is dealing with the TN Godavarman case. Under this case, the Supreme Court has been issuing various directions concerning forests across the country since 1995. Whereas, the bench led by Justice Oka is dealing with the MC Mehta batch of cases that specifically relate to the environmental issues of the Delhi-NCR region.

In line with that, the Division bench comprising Justices Abhay Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan has been hearing a suo motu contempt case against DDA Vice Chairman Subhasish Panda for violation of orders passed in the MC Mehta batch of cases.

However, today, another contempt case relating to tree-felling in the Delhi Ridge area was listed before the three-judge bench led by Justice Gavai. In its plea, the DDA sought permission to cut some trees to widen a road to the Central Armed Police Forces Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (CAPFIMS), an exclusive hospital planned for the paramilitary.

Appearing for the petitioners who moved the contempt petitions, Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan argued today that it was not a case of impropriety by the Division Bench. He explained that there were separate applications.

To which, Justice Gavai replied, “I have been hearing it for two years … We do not understand the resistance in placing it before the CJI. We are not allowing (cutting) or hearing on merits. Recording of arguments is not our findings.”

Responding to the senior lawyer’s objections and environmental concerns,  Justice Gavai said, “You are not the only nature-lover here. I have also passed (pro-ecology) orders in Pench (national park) etc. We only want judicial propriety. We are not touchy about any matter.”

Further during the proceeding, Justices Gavai-led bench observed, “A situation has arisen wherein on the same cause of action, two contempt proceedings are pending – one on the basis of the notice issued by the bench presided by one of us, Gavai J, and the other on the basis of order passed by Supreme Court judge, Oka J. The learned Amicus informs that the contempt proceedings initiated by the bench presided by Oka J have substantially travelled […] and various orders are passed by the said Bench. In that view of the matter, in order to avoid conflicting orders, we find it appropriate that the contempt proceedings initiated by the bench presided by one of us vide order dated 24 April 2024 are kept in abeyance”.

The bench added that the contempt proceedings with regard to the felling of trees were first initiated by the bench presided by one of us (Gavai J) vide order dated 24 April 2024. It would have been more appropriate for the other bench to seek clarification from the Hon’ble CJI before initiating contempt proceedings for the same cause of action as to which bench should continue with the said proceedings.

The three-judge Bench then proceeded to refer the matter before CJI DY Chandrachud to avoid conflicting orders.

Assam: Shahid Ali arrested for sexually harassing a woman; was blackmailing her with obscene videos

The Dispur Police arrested a sexual predator who is accused of harassing a woman both sexually and mentally, police said on Tuesday (23rd July). The accused offender has been identified as Shahid Ali, a resident of Barpeta, Assam. According to the Police, the sexual predator trapped his victims by introducing himself as unmarried and then pressuring women to have sexual intercourse with him. However, the Police found out that Ali is married and is the father of two children.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim, Police apprehended him from the Supermarket area of Guwahati after an extensive investigation.

According to the police, Ali had introduced himself as an unmarried man to the victim who is a resident of Dibrugarh. Later he trapped the woman and somehow acquired her objectionable videos and started blackmailing her. He extorted money from her by blackmailing.

According to reports, an organisation named Sanatani Bhumiputra Mancha assisted the Police in arresting the sexual predator, Shahid Ali. The Police have stated that further legal action is underway.

Earlier this week, on 20th July, the Bengaluru Police arrested an accused named Anwar Hussain who was wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor in Karnataka.

The wanted accused identified as Anwar Hussain is a resident of Hailakandi district in Assam. According to reports, after committing the heinous crime, he was hiding in Guwahati.

Following the assault, which took place in Bengaluru, a case (505/24) was registered at the Hal Police Station. The Police had launched a search operation to locate and nab the accused. Finally, on Saturday (20th July), they detained Anwar Hussain from the Last Gate locality of Guwahati.

Meanwhile, last month, the Police busted a sex racket in Dhubri and arrested six women and five men. The arrested accused were involved in running the sex racket at Panbari by the NH 17 under Gauripur Police Station of Dhubri district.

The illicit sex racket was being operated from a house that belonged to Zail Hoque and Sapiar Rahman. However, a source said that it was allegedly being managed by Rahman’s wife Zainab Bibi.

According to the villagers, they had been observing the running of sex rackets for quite a long time, and whenever they protested against it neither Zail Hoque nor Sapiar Rahman paid any heed to it.

A police source said that aggrieved villagers assembled around the house where the illicit flesh trade was going on. They completely ransacked the house, razed it to the ground, and apprehended all the accused.

The destruction of Mecca and Medina: How Wahabi Islam razed down ancient structures like Taliban destroyed Bamiyan Buddhas, fearing idolatry

Saudi Arabia, a Middle Eastern country, is the land of the holiest sites of Islam—Mecca and Medina. The country attracts lakhs of Muslims from across the world for Haj pilgrimage. While it is widely known that Islam despises idol worship, none has been as rabidly against idol worshipping as the Wahabis and the House of Saud. Over mere apprehension that certain Islamic heritage sites in Saudi Arabia would encourage idol-worship, the Saudi government and Wahabis in the past have razed them and modified their usage.

Before delving into how historic structures have over the years been destroyed to prevent the promotion of ‘idol worship’, it is pertinent to learn about who the Wahabis are and about the House of Saud.

The Wahhabis are the most conservative sect of Sunni Islam. This fundamentalist branch of Islam called Wahabism was founded by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahab in the 18th century. Wahabis strive to ‘return’ to the “pure” form of Islam as practised and propagated by Prophet Muhammad. Wahhabism emphasizes stringent monotheism and vehemently opposes practices like idol worship as it is shirk [sin], including the veneration of saints/sufis and the use of religious relics etc.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahab had sought refuge in Diriyah, a small oasis town on the outskirts of modern-day Riyadh. Diriyah was ruled by its Chieftain Muhammad ibn Saud from the Al Saud. Saud not only gave refuge to Wahab after he was thrown out of Hejaz, the region that housed both Mecca and Medina but also signed a pact with him in 1744. This “Wahhabi-Saudi Pact” marked the beginning of the First Saudi state wherein Muhammad ibn Saud became the Emir while Wahab assumed the title of “Imam”.

To solidify the accord, Ibn Saud’s eldest son married al-Wahhab’s daughter and Al Saud publicly accepted Wahhabism. Wahab’s puritanical form of Islam passionately opposed religious innovation (bidaa) and pushed for the abolition of traditions such as Sufi ceremonies and saint veneration. During their conquest outside of Najd, they demolished several Shia shrines. The Wahabis employed the insult ‘Rafida’ (rejecters) to classify Shia, a practice that persists into the twenty-first century.

The radical ideology of Wahhabism has resulted in the systematic destruction of several Saudi heritage monuments. Wahhabis believed conserving these places would give rise to idol worship, which is forbidden under their understanding of Islam. Thus, many historical and religious structures have been razed to prohibit any form of worship or pilgrimage that contradicts their rigid monotheistic perspectives.

Destruction of the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali in Karbala

In the year 1802, Wahhabi forces led by Saud bin Abdul-Aziz attacked the city of Karbala which came under the Ottoman Empire’s rule. Karbala to this day remains a holy site for Shias. During the Diriyah campaign, Abdul-Aziz-led forces destroyed the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali killed thousands of Shia inhabitants and plundered the city. The Wahabis carried out this massacre of over two to five thousand Shias right ahead of the month of Muharram.

Although Karbala is in modern-day Iraq, the Wahabi-Saudi attack on this Shia-revered site gives an insight into the fanatic mindset of the Wahabis. The Wahabis deem rituals such as intercession [shafa’ah] which means pleading to Allah through a Muslim saint, erecting structures over graves, pilgrimages (ziyarah), and tawassul [means that can be used to gain nearness to Allah]to be signs of shirk [polytheism/idolatry] and strongly oppose them.

By 1806, the Wahabis captured the city of Medina and unleashed massive destruction of structures they feared would promote idolatry. The Wahabi forces razed all domes and structures within, and outside, of the Jannat-al Baqi cemetery. This was no ordinary cemetery but the first Islamic cemetery in Medina in Hejaz. They also destroyed the Mosque of Fatima al-Zahra, the Mosque of al-Manaratain, and Qubbat’ al-Thanaya among other structures of Islamic significance.

After the death of Tusun Pasha, the son of Egypt’s Wali Muhammad Ali Pasha who led Ottoman forces against the Emir of Diriyah, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Saud in 1816, in 1818, the Ottoman caliphate led by Sultan Mahmoud II decided to crush the Wahabis. In this vein, Tusun Pasha’s son Ibrahim Pasha led his forces to Diriyah, inflicting a crushing defeat on the Wahabis and reclaiming Mecca and Medina. With this, the first Saud state rule came to an end. After this, the Ottomans grandly renovated the mosques. They also constructed a dome on the vandalised Baqi’ cemetery over the graves of the Prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatima al-Zahra, Zainul ‘Abidin (‘Ali bin al-Hussain), Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Baqir and Ja’far al-Sadiq.

The architectural grandeur, however, did not last long as in 1924, the House of Saud regained control of the two Islamic holy cities—Mecca and Medina. The Wahabi Sauds undertook a second campaign against the Jannat ul Baqi cemetery and unleashed the destruction of graves, mosques, domes and other structures. With the permission of King Ibn Saud on 25 April 1925, Mausoleums, domes, and gravestones were destroyed by the Wahabi forces. The graves destroyed here included those of Prophet Muhammad’s mother Aminah, father Abdullah ibn Abdul-Muttalib and other family members in addition to prominent Imams.

To this day, the Wahabi clerics justify the destruction of many such heritage sites saying that structures dedicated to the mortal beings diluted the worship of a single and unique Allah.

How ‘expansion’ projects have led to the destruction of several ancient structures in Mecca and Medina

Notably, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has undertaken four major expansion projects to accommodate more pilgrims arriving at the Grand Mosque. King Abdulaziz initiated the first such project in 1955 involving the construction of new floors, courtyards, and the installation of electric lights and fans., the second was launched by King Fahd in 1988 for adding new wings on the eastern and western sides, the construction of minarets, and the installation of escalators and air conditioning systems and other facilities.

In 2008, the Saudi government, led by King Abdullah Ibn Abdulaziz, approved the Grand Mosque’s expansion, which included the expropriation of 3,200,000 sq ft of land to the north and northwest of it. In 2011, King Abdullah’s government announced that under the “King Abdullah Expansion Project” worth $21 billion several new structures including minarets would be erected and the circumambulation (Mataf) area would be expanded to accommodate 2.5 million Haj pilgrims. Since then, numerous heritage sites have been demolished in the two holy cities.

Among the notable structures destroyed included the Ottoman portico, which was a significant architectural feature. This structure dates back to the 17th century and was renowned for its distinctive arches and columns. The destruction of the Ottoman portico sparked strong outrage in Turkey in 2013. Besides, Abbasid-era columns, also integral to the historical architecture of the mosque, were destroyed during the expansion.

Reports say that since 1985, 98% of the historical and Islamic heritage sites have been demolished with critics alleging that the Saudi government wants to “wipe out” history. A notable such site included the house of Hamza, the Prophet Muhammad’s uncle. This house was destroyed to make way for a hotel.

Similarly, the house of Prophet Muhammad’s wife Khadijah was demolished and 1400 public toilets were built at the site nearly a decade back. This is also confirmed by British historian Ziauddin Sardar in his book Mecca: The Sacred City.

“The complex stands on top of the bulldozed al-Ayad fort, built in 1781 and no longer able to perform its function of protecting Mecca from invaders. At the opposite end of the Grand Mosque Complex, as it is now called, the house of Khadijah, the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad, has been turned into a block of toilets.2 The Royal Makkah Clock Tower is not the only building to hover above the Sacred Mosque. There is the Raffles Makkah Palace, a luxury hotel, with round-the-clock butler service. Add to that the Makkah Hilton, built over the house of Abu Bakr, the closest companion of the Prophet and the first caliph. Along with the Intercontinental Mecca, they all vie for prominence on the skyline. There are numerous other five-star hotels and high-rise apartment blocks,” Sardar wrote.

He further added, “Within the next decade, there will be a ring of 130 skyscrapers looking down upon the Sacred Mosque. There are spectacular plans to further redevelop the Sacred Mosque so that it can accommodate up to 5 million worshippers. With a seemingly casual disregard for history, the Saudis are rebuilding the Ottoman-era section of the Haram, the oldest surviving section of the Sacred Mosque. The interior, of exquisite beauty, with intricately carved marble columns, built by a succession of Ottoman sultans – Sultan Suleiman, Sultan Salim I, Sultan Murad III, and Sultan Murad IV from 1553 to 1629, will give way to a series of multi-storey prayer halls, eighty metres high.”

“The columns, which are adorned with calligraphy of the names of the Prophet’s companions, will be demolished. Indeed, the whole of the old Sacred Mosque will be bulldozed. History stretches back to Umar, the second caliph of Islam, ibn Zubair, who sacrificed his life to rebuild the Kaaba, and to the Abbasid caliphs, who will be replaced by an ultra-modern doughnut-shaped building. The new Jamarat Bridge will ultimately be twelve storeys high, so pilgrims will be able to ‘Stone the Devils’ on even more multiple levels. It seems only a matter of time before the house where Prophet Muhammad was born, located opposite the imposing Royal Palace, is razed to the ground, and turned, probably, into a car park,” Sardar wrote.

Excerpt from Ziyauddin Sardar’s book Mecca: The Sacred City

On the 13th of August 2002, the 1,200-year-old mosque and tomb of Sayyid Imam al-Uraidhi ibn Ja’far al-Sadiq, the ninth in the line of Prophet Muhammad, located four kilometres from Masjid-e Nabawi in Medina, was destroyed by explosives and levelled.

In 2003, a historic Ottoman Ajyad Fortress that once protected Mecca from attack and dated back over 200 years was demolished, only to be rebuilt by a massive 601-meter Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower. This clocktower is part of a complex built by the Bin Laden Group including five-storey shopping malls, luxury hotels, parking etc.

At that time, Turkey had sought UNESCO’s intervention to stop the Fortress’s destruction, however, UNESCO did not intervene.

Besides, several mountains have also been destroyed in the holy city to construct roads. In 2013,  the split in Mount Uhud, north of Medina was filled with concrete. Reports say that Prophet Muhammad was carried there after being wounded in the Battle of Uhud against the Quraysh in 625 AD.

In addition to this, the famous Hilton Hotel was built over the site where once the house of Abu Bakr, the first caliph, stood.

Hilton Hotel in Medina (Source: Hilton’s website)

Dr Irfan al-Alawi, historian, founder and former executive director of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation estimated that over 300 Islamic heritage sites have been demolished over the years as a part of the expansion projects.

“Six small mosques in Medina where Muhammad is believed to have prayed have been locked. The seventh, belonging to Islam’s first caliph Abu Bakr, has been razed to make way for an ATM,” a TIME Magazine report from 2014 reads.

Of the famed “Seven Mosques” originally established by Prophet Muhammad’s daughter and four of his “greatest Companions” five have been demolished namely: Masjid Abu Bakr, Masjid Salman al-Farsi, Masjid Umar ibn al-Khattab, Masjid Sayyida Fatima bint Rasulillah, and Masjid Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Interestingly, over 75 years ago, the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad was reportedly turned into a “cattle market” near Ka’ba. At present, his birthplace located at Suq al-Layl Street has been turned into a library named Makkah Al Mukarramah Library by the Saudi government.

UNESCO’s silence on Saudi government demolishing heritage sites

There are six UNESCO heritage sites in Saudi Arabia: The Gateway to Mecca and Medina, At-Turaif District in Diriyah, Rock Art of the Hail Region, Al-Hijr Archaeological Site (Madain Salih), Al Ahsa Oasis and Hima Cultural Area. While the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has been advocating for the preservation of heritage sites across the world, it has failed to advocate for the preservation of sites of cultural and religious significance.

Destruction of Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan and the similarities in the Taliban and Wahabi mindset

Back in March 2001, Afghanistan’s Taliban government demolished the Bamiyan Buddhas, two enormous statues carved into the cliffs of the Bamiyan Valley in the sixth century. Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban leader, ordered the destruction, declaring the monuments blasphemous and against Islamic principles since idols and statues are considered haram by the Taliban as well who are Sunni Muslims of the Deobandi (Hanafi) sect. Ignoring international outrage and condemnation, the Taliban destroyed the ancient statues, which were regarded as Buddhist treasures and part of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage.

The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas by the Taliban is closely aligned with Wahabi (Salafi) extremist ideology, which advocates a strict and puritanical form of Islam. The Taliban’s demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas was a manifestation of this extremist ideology, echoing Wahhabi practices of destroying historical and religious monuments of non-Muslims as well as those of Islamic significance since they do not attach much importance to structures dedicated to mortals.

The Sauds historically have not been much interested in preserving the Islamic heritage sites since they believe such sites could promote idol worship or Shirk, Indian Sufis had in May this year urged the Saudi Arabian government to rebuild the destroyed Jannat al-Baqi cemetery in Medina. A meeting in this regard was held in Ajmer’s Moinuddin Chishti’s shrine. Unsurprisingly, however, the Saudi government did not respond to their appeal.

As I.N.D.I. Alliance alleges ‘Undeclared Emergency’, Karnataka Police filed 37 cases for social media posts against politicians, many based on ‘fact-check unit’ run by private firms

On Tuesday (23rd July), Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara revealed in the state assembly that the state Police has registered 37 FIRs/cases this year over ‘derogatory’ social media posts against politicians. According to the Moneycontrol report, these social media users were accused of ‘spreading false information’ or making derogatory remarks against politicians, mostly Congress leaders.

The Moneycontrol report added that out of 37 cases, the action was initiated against 12 posts that were accused of making ‘derogatory’ remarks against Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, and five posts were deemed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Some of the cases were registered for making posts against Deputy CM and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar and IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge.

A few cases have also been registered against social media posts that are accused of making derogatory remarks against Union Minister and JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy, BJP state president BY Vijayendra, BJP leader Anant Kumar Hegde, and others.

Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara made this revelation in the state assembly while responding to a query raised by Congress leader and Tiptur MLA K Shadakshari. He was asked regarding action taken against those spreading false information about public representatives on social media.

The Minister also revealed that most of these cases are still under investigation and they were filed before the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into effect on 1st July 2024.

The highest number of cases have been registered in Bengaluru (eight). Six cases each have been registered in Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru. They are followed by Udupi (five), Shivamogga (three), Mangaluru (two), and Kalaburagi (two). One case each has been registered in Ramanagara, Chikkaballapur, Belagavi, Kodagu, and Gadag.

Speaking to Moneycontrol, Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayananda said, “We are taking action against hate posts on social media based on inputs received either through police stations or from the state fact-check unit. Our intelligence division also has a separate internal fact-check unit to monitor social media posts.”

In most of these cases, the Police have invoked IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, or language), 295 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), and 505 (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between classes). Additionally, Section 67 of the IT Act has also been invoked.

As per the report, an FIR was registered at the Napoklu police station in Kodagu district against a social media post that was accused of targeting CM Siddaramaiah. While a charge sheet was filed in the court, the accused settled the case with a fine of Rs 5,000 at a Lok Adalat hearing.

BJP charges the Congress government with using its ‘fact-check’ unit for ‘vendetta Politics’

The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a scathing attack on the Siddaramaiah government in the state and accused it of using its ‘fact-check’ unit for ‘vendetta Politics’.

BJP spokesperson Surabhi Hodigere lambasted the Congress government for establishing a fact-checking unit in Karnataka. She also expressed concerns about lack of transparency in criteria, politically biased vendor selection, and defiance of Supreme Court orders.

She said, “Despite the Supreme Court’s stay order against a central fact-checking unit, the Karnataka government persists with its own, showing blatant disregard for judicial authority. The BJP is pursuing legal action to ensure compliance with judicial directives,” she said.

The senior Police official pointed out that many cases were registered based on the information from the state fact-check unit. It is pertinent to note that none of the companies that are part of the state’s fact-check unit are signatories of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN).

Strikingly, the Congress government in Karnataka established its own fact-checking unit called the Information Disorder Tackling Unit (IDTU) in March 2024. It claims to target fake news and misinformation, especially on social media.

The four firms part of the IDTU are namely Gauri Media, Logically Infomedia Private Ltd, Trylika Technology Ltd, and Newsplus Communications for the IDTU operations. A fact-checking team, an analytics team, and a capacity-building team comprise the three teams at IDTU.

IT-BT officials said that 537 fact-checks were conducted in the last 90 days, resulting in 537 cases and 18 FIRs.

Report citing sources stated that the state government has allocated Rs 3.19 crore for the fact-checking unit, which started operations just before the Lok Sabha election model code of conduct came into effect.

Muzzling voice of dissenters and authoritarian crackdown

While Congress and its I.N.D.I. alliance partners have been alleging that the Modi government has imposed an undeclared emergency and is stifling opposition voices, they have been blatantly hounding and launching an authoritarian crackdown against their rivals, arresting or filing FIRs against one journalist after another with intent to muzzle the voice of dissent.

Earlier this year, in June, the Congress government had invoked Section 153-A and 502(2) of the IPC against popular journalist Ajeet Bharti. They accused him of making derogatory remarks against Rahul Gandhi with “intent to provoke dissent and hatred among various religious groups” and aimed to “disturb public peace and incite disorder”.

Three Karnataka Police personnel had reached his house, uninitiated, claiming that they just wanted to deliver him a notice. However, while recounting the incident, Ajeet Bharti described it as a tactic of intimidation

However, on 24th June, the Karnataka High Court gave relief to Bharti and halted the proceedings against him. The court noted that the statement in the video tweet was based on reports from two national newspapers.

Meanwhile, the FIR against Ajeet Bharti came days after an FIR was registered against an X user named Befittingfacts over flimsy grounds.

Earlier, on 18th May, Karnataka Police arrested X user MumbaichaDon aka Bhiku Mhatre from his house in Goa over the now-deleted post on social media against the Congress manifesto.

I.N.D.I. alliance partners who claim to champion the cause of democracy, free speech, and liberalism, have been notorious for their authoritarian regime, launching assaults on democratic practices and arresting naysayers and rivals on flimsy grounds. Ironically, several I.N.D.I. alliance-ruled states have booked journalists, X users, and supporters of their rival parties accusing them of spreading hatred or fake news, as has been alleged by the Karnataka government in this case, they have been caught peddling fake news on an industrial scale, especially around the Lok Sabha election phase.

‘They are also human beings’: SC asks govt to come out with rehabilitation scheme before removing encroachments on Haldwani railway land

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre and state government to come out with a rehabilitation scheme for people asked to vacate railway land in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani area.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan directed railway authorities and governments to identify the land required for the expansion of railway tracks and the families likely to be affected. It further asked authorities to complete the exercise within four weeks and scheduled the next hearing for September 11.

“Have you issued any notice? Why are you riding on the back of a PIL? If there are encroachers, railways should issue notice to the encroachers. How many people are you seeking to evict? They are also human beings,” Justice Bhuyan asked

“As the first initiative, let the land which is required immediately be identified with full description. Similarly, the families who are likely to be affected in the event of taking possession of that land should also be immediately identified,” said the bench.

The top court was hearing an application from the railways to vacate a stay on the eviction of encroachments from railway land to safeguard the railway tracks and the Haldwani railway station.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati requested the bench vacate the stay, saying that several expansion plans for the railways have been thwarted due to the unavailability of the land.

The ASG said that Haldwani is the gateway to the hills and the last station before the Kumaon region.

The bench noted that approximately 30.04 hectares of land owned by the railways are claimed to have been encroached upon, with 4,365 houses and over 50,000 people living on the site.

The railways said that there was an urgent need for a part of the land where the defunct railway line is required to be shifted, besides other necessary infrastructure.

As the ASG was requesting to vacate the stay, Bench also observed, “Assuming they are encroachers, the ultimate question is whether they are all human beings. They have lived there for decades. These are all pucca houses. Courts can’t be ruthless, but at the same time, courts cannot encourage people to encroach. As the state, when everything has been happening before your eyes, you also have to do something. The fact remains that people have been living there for 3-5 decades, perhaps even before independence. What have you been doing all these years?”

In 2023, the residents approached the apex court against the Uttarakhand High Court’s order to remove unauthorised occupants near the Haldwani railway station.

On December 20, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the removal of encroachments from railway land in the Banbhoolpura area of Haldwani after giving notice to the occupants one week in advance.

A total of 4,365 encroachments were to be removed from the area. Those facing eviction have been living on the land for many decades. Residents protested against the removal of encroachments from railway land in compliance with the High Court order.

The petition highlighted that the petitioners are poor people who have been lawful residents of Mohalla Nai Basti, Haldwani district, for more than 70 years.

The petition stated that the names of residents are entered in the municipal records of the house tax register and that they have been paying house tax regularly for years.

There are five government schools, one hospital, and two overhead water tanks in the area, it said. The plea further stated that “the long-established physical possession of the petitioners and their ancestors, some even before the date of Indian independence, has been recognised by the state and its agencies, and they have been given gas and water connections and even Aadhaar card numbers accepting their residential addresses.”

Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun tells Canadian MP Chandra Arya to leave the country for condemning attack on Hindu temple, the MP says their land is polluted by Khalistani extremists

On 24th July, Canadian MP Chandra Arya responded to Khalistani terrorist and founder of Khalistani terrorist organisation Sikhs For Justice, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, after Pannun threatened him in a video and asked the MP to leave Canada. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Arya said that our land (Canada) is being polluted by Khalistani extremists abusing our freedoms guaranteed by our Canadian Charter of Rights.

In his statement, he recalled the contributions of Hindus made not only in Canada but worldwide. The statement read, “In response to my condemnation of the vandalism of the Hindu temple BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton and other acts of hate and violence by Khalistan supporters in Canada, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of Sikhs for Justice has released a video demanding me and my Hindu-Canadian friends to go back to India. We Hindus have come to our wonderful country Canada from all parts of the world. From every country in South Asia, many countries in Africa and the Caribbean, and many other parts of the world, we have come here and  Canada is our land. We have made and continue to make immense positive and productive contributions to the socio-economic development of Canada. With our long history of Hindu culture and heritage, we have enriched the multicultural fabric of Canada. Our land is being polluted by Khalistani extremists abusing our freedoms guaranteed by our Canadian Charter of Rights.”

Arya’s statement came after Pannun released a video threatening him. He said, “The likes of Arya and his supporters. You have no place in Canada because you are working against Canadian values, you are working against the Charter of Rights and you are promoting the interests of your masters in India. You all must abandon your citizenship and move back to your motherland India. While you and your supporters Chandra Arya are promoting violence against pro-Khalistan Sikhs we the Khalistan Sikhs. The pro-Khalistan Sikhs, have proved for decades that we are loyal to Canada, we are loyal to Canadian values. On 28th July in Calgary, the Khalistan Referendum voting is dedicated to all the Shaheeds of Canada who went back to fight Indian forces in Punjab following Canadian values of fighting injustice and attaining martyrdom. We are dedicating the 28th July Calgary voting to all those Shaheeds. You Chandra Arya, you and your followers have no place in a democratic country like Canada.”

Pannun released the video after Arya condemned the attack on Hindu temple BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton. In a post on X, he wrote, “The Hindu temple BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton is vandalized again. During the last few years, Hindu temples in Greater Toronto Area, British Columbia and other places in Canada are being vandalized with hateful graffiti. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of Sikhs for Justice last year publicly called for Hindus to go back to India. Khalistan supporters publicly celebrated in Brampton and Vancouver the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and brandishing images of deadly weapons. As I have always been saying, Khalistani extremists seems to get away with ease with their public rhetoric of hate and violence. Again, let me put on record. Hindu-Canadians are legitimately concerned. Like a broken record, I again call on Canadian law enforcement agencies to take this issue seriously before these rhetorics get translated into physical action against Hindu-Canadians.”

Attack on BAPS Temple

On 22nd July, extremists defaced the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Swaminarayan Mandir in Edmonton city in Alberta province of Canada. In the photographs, it could be seen that the wall of the Hindu temple vandalised with Hinduphobic, anti-Modi graffiti.

This is not the first time that a Hindu temple had come under attack in Canada.

  1. In September 2023, the Shree Mata Bhameshwari Durga Devi Society in Surrey British Columbia was sprayed with ‘Punjab is not India’ grafitti
  2. In February 2023, a Ram temple in Mississauga was defaced with anti-India graffiti by unknown miscreants.
  3. In January 2023, the Gauri Shankar Mandir was desecrated by Khalistani extremists in Brampton City in Ontario province of Canada. The walls of the temple were defaced with anti-India graffiti by Khalistanis associated allegedly with the banned outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). The vicious slogan of ‘Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad’ was found spray-painted on the outer wall of Gauri Shankar Mandir.
  4. In September 2022, some Khalistani terrorists defaced BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Toronto with anti-India slogans. Several videos circulating on social media showed slogans of ‘Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad’ painted on the walls of the temple.
  5. In February 2022 alone, six Hindu temples were attacked in Toronto.

Madhya Pradesh: Mob pelts stones at police, residents demanding the removal of illegal property owned by Rafiq, accused of assaulting old woman; 22 booked

On Tuesday, 23rd July, a mob pelted stones at a state police team and civic workers seeking the demolition of an individual’s house accused of assaulting a woman and her husband over a land dispute in a village in Guna district in Madhya Pradesh. The situation prompted law enforcement personnel to fire teargas shells to disperse protesters. 22 individuals have been booked for pelting stones at police and civic authorities.

According to reports, a few police officers and civic officials were injured, and a fire department truck was destroyed during the stone pelting in Vishnupura village, which is part of the Fatehgarh police station. “When civic staff went to pull down illegal shops of one Rafiq Khan on directives of village panchayat officials, a large crowd comprising local residents and other individuals demanded that his house, too, be razed and later pelted stones at policemen and members of the demolition squad,” the police said.

Rafiq Khan is accused of beating an elderly woman, her husband, and his family on Monday, 22nd July. He and two other family members, including his father, were eventually arrested. On Tuesday, a team of police and officials led by Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Vivek Asthana arrived in Vishnupura to remove the accused’s illegal structures. However, the police shot tear gas and used force to disperse the angry mob and bring the situation under control.

Rafiq Khan had built two businesses on government land, which the authorities demolished, Guna’s acting Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vikas Anand informed the media. Tension rose briefly in the area as residents demanded that Rafiq Khan’s house be demolished, said Anand, who added that the situation had been brought under control.

Notably, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists also arrived in the village and gathered in front of the Fatehgarh police station, demanding the removal of illegal buildings built by the assault case accused. They pressed on the demolition of Rafiq Khan’s house, the police said. Cops are identifying stone pelters and will take action against them after registering a case, he added.

On Monday, 22nd July, a massive dispute arose in Vishnupura over the removal of the boundary wall from government land. An elderly woman, her husband, and their nephew claimed that the vacant plot belonged to them. Later a rival group of villagers led by accused Rafiq Khan also laid claim to the land. Rafiq Khan and his relatives beat up the elderly woman and her husband during a heated fight, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media. According to the reports, both sides filed cross-FIRs related to the incident.

In a viral video, the woman is seen falling on the road while a man kneels on her and smacks her, while the old man is assaulted with sticks. “Both sides have accused each other of assault. Acting on a complaint of Rafiq Khan, an FIR was registered against the elderly woman, her husband and their nephew. On the basis of the second complaint, a case was registered against Farid Khan, his son Rafiq and grandson Raju,” the official added.

Farid Khan, his son and grandson have been arrested in the case.
