Read why people are talking about the movie ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ after Mamata Banerjee’s speech about Chandrayaan-3 went viral

on 23rd August, India achieved a major milestone in space research when ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully managed the soft landing of the Vikram Lander on the lunar south pole. As the nation celebrated, messages and wishes from politicians started pouring in.

Among the messages, a video clip featuring West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee went viral. In the video, the Bengal CM was seen saying, “I remember, when Rakesh Roshan landed on the Moon, Indira Gandhi asked him how does India look from there..”

The video clip went viral and almost immediately people started asking if Mamata Banerjee watched the movie Koi Mil Gaya instead of ISRO’s livestream of Chandrayaan-3 landing.

X users started asking if that is how the movie Koi Mil Gaya was conceptualized, when Rakesh Roshan went to the Moon and met Jaadu there.

Memes of actor Rakesh Roshan wearing a spacesuit started doing the rounds too.

It was Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, not Rakesh Roshan, and it was space, not Moon

What Mamata Banerjee probably meant was the conversation between Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, and the then-Indian PM Indira Gandhi.

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, an Indian Air Force pilot, had flown in a Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11, in April 1984, becoming the first ever Indian to travel to space. The space flight was a part of the Soviet Interkosmos program. The famous conversation between Indira Gandhi and Sharma took place when he was onboard the spacecraft.

When Indira Gandhi asked Sharma how India looks from space, Sharma answered, “Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Hindustan Hamara” which means “the most beautiful in the world”.

WC Sharma, the first and so far the only Indian citizen to fly to space, spent 7 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes in space.

Another major slip-up in Mamata Banerjee’s statement was that she thought Rakesh Sharma (whom she referred to as Rakesh Roshan) had landed on the Moon. The Soyuz T-11 never went to the Moon, it was a space mission.

Rakesh Roshan and Koi Mil Gaya connection

Actor and movie maker Rakesh Roshan is the father of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan. Rakesh Roshan played the role of the scientist who believed in extraterrestrial life in the movie Koi Mil Gaya. In that movie, Rakesh Roshan’s character sends some sound signals to space and receives a response from aliens. Years later, an alien named Jaadu visits his son and becomes his friend.

The social media memes mocked Mamata Banerjee for confusing India’s first astronaut with a Bollywood actor and calling Rakesh Sharma’s famous spaceflight a ‘Moon landing mission’.

Banerjee, however, is not the only politician to get the very basics wrong. Rajasthan’s sports minister Ashok Chandna was seen congratulating the ‘passengers’ onboard the Chandrayaan-3 landing craft.

Chandrayaan 3: Pragyan rover begins excursion on the lunar surface, to conduct two key experiments over the next 14 days

At 6:04 PM IST on Wednesday (23 August), ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission landed on the moon’s surface, marking a significant milestone in the ascent of India’s contribution to space exploration. The Made-in-India Pragyan rover has swiftly moved out from the lander and has begun to walk on the moon officially marking India’s first steps on the lunar surface.

A picture of the rover coming from the lander was shared by INSPACE Chairman Pawan K Goenka. “First photo of Rover coming out of the lander on the ramp,” he tweeted.

With this, ISRO has achieved two of the three main objectives of the Chandrayaan-3 mission which include demonstrating Safe and Soft Landing on the Lunar Surface, Rover roving on the moon, and conducting in-situ scientific experiments.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu has lauded the feat saying that she looks forward to the mission’s completion with excitement.

The rover is tasked with carrying out in-situ (in the original place) chemical analysis of the lunar surface during its mobility. It is equipped with scientific payloads – Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) – for deriving the elemental composition in the vicinity of the landing site.

Although the mission life of the rover, weighing 26 kgs, is one lunar day (or 14 Earth days), its LIBS payload will conduct elemental analysis, derive the chemical composition, and infer mineralogical composition. The APXS payload will help determine the elemental composition of the Lunar soil and rocks around the lunar landing site.

During the briefing post-landing, ISRO Chairman S Somnath said that the rover will conduct two crucial experiments and that the next 14 days are very important.

“Instruments like RAMBHA will be deployed to study the charged atmosphere of the moon. ILSA payload will be lowered from the lander Vikram, touch the surface, and measure the seismic activity of the moon,” said the ISRO Chairman, beaming with pride.

The ISRO chief further said that two important experiments will be linked to the elemental and chemical composition of the moon’s surface. “The first experiment will take place by using the laser beam from the rover on the material, it will fuse it and then generate some spectroscopic information which will identify the elements over there. Another experiment is related to the Alpha particle which will be emitted by radioactive materials sitting there and that will generate certain X-ray fluorescence on the surface, and that will be measured to find the chemical composition.”

Kota: NEET aspirant hospitalized after he consumes 20 paracetamol tablets, says it was a ‘mistake’

0

On Tuesday, August 22, a NEET aspirant from Khagaria district of Bihar was admitted to the hospital after he consumed twenty tablets of paracetamol at his rented room in Kota, Rajasthan. The 23-year-old student Gulshan Rajput claimed that he consumed twenty tablets of Dolo 650 “mistakenly” after he had a fever.

Currently, the NEET aspirant is out of danger, but still under treatment at MBS Hospital.

While one of Gulshan Rajput’s friends Sarvesh claimed that Rajput had been depressed for the past few days over scoring low marks in routine tests at the coaching institute even after studying for the medical entrance examination for over two years, Rajput refuted the claims.

Gulshan Rajput said that he did not attempt suicide and was also not depressed. He added that he consumed twenty paracetamol tablets mistakenly after having a fever.

Meanwhile, DSP KS Rathore said that the NEET aspirant has denied attempting suicide or being depressed, however, he added that an investigation has been initiated into the matter.

Notably, several suicide cases of students have emerged from India’s coaching hub, Kota this year. As reported earlier, an 18-year-old JEE aspirant from Bihar reportedly committed suicide on August 15, at his PG room in Kota.

Earlier, on the 3rd of August, the body of Manjot Chhabra (18), a resident of UP’s Rampur district, was found under suspicious circumstances in the hostel room. His mouth was tied with polythene, and both hands were also tied with a rope. There were three notes on the wall of his room.

He was preparing for the NEET exam. Though it was considered a suspected case of suicide, his parents expressed suspicion of murder.

A day later, on the 4th of August, Bhargav Mishra (17), a resident of Motihar in Bihar, reportedly committed suicide in his room at night. As per reports, he hanged himself from the water pipe in the cooler and committed suicide. He came to Kota 4 months back and was preparing for JEE.

Later, on 10 August, Manish Prajapati (17), a resident of Azamgarh, UP, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the hostel. He came to Kota 6 months ago and was preparing for JEE. A few hours before the suicide, his father had gone to meet him.

22 suicide cases have been reported from Kota in 2023 so far.

Air Traffic Controller’s error sets Vistara flights on collision course, Alert woman pilot saves hundreds of lives

0

On Wednesday, August 23, air traffic controllers at the Delhi airport accidentally set two Vistara flights on a collision course. However, an alert woman pilot avoided the tragedy at the last minute. The incident occurred when one flight landed and the other was preparing to take off. Both flights had a total of around 300 passengers on board, including the crew members.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that an alert pilot in the aircraft crossing the runway flagged the issue immediately. Identified as Captain Sonu Gill of the Ahmedabad-Delhi flight, the pilot saved hundreds of lives. As per reports, the two planes were less than 2 KMs apart when the ATC received a warning about the situation. Had the flight that was taking off not stopped at the right time, there would have been a major accident at the busiest airport in the country.

The air traffic controller has been de-rostered by DGCA, and an investigation has been initiated into the matter.

What happened at the Delhi Airport

On the day of the incident, Ahmedabad to Delhi flight VT1926 was instructed to cross runway 29R after landing on runway 29L. At the same time, the controller permitted another plane, Vistara VT1725, from runway 29R. Speaking to PTI, DGCA officials said, “Momentarily, the tower controller forgot this crossing and issued take-off clearance to another Vistara flight VTI725 (Delhi–Bagdogra) from runway 29R. On realisation of the error based on input from VTI926, the tower controller instructed VTI725 to cancel take off.”

An unnamed Delhi Airport official told Hindustan Times, “The Ahmedabad- Delhi flight landed at the left runway, and the other flight was to take off from the right when the pilot of the [first] flight, during the crossing, noticed that the departure flight was about to take off. She informed the ATC, after which the officer immediately ordered the departing cockpit crew to abort take off.”

Wagner chief Prigozhin dies in a plane crash, exactly 2 months after trying to start a ‘coup’ against Russian President Vladimir Putin

A plane carrying Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin reportedly crashed on Wednesday in the Tver region northwest of Moscow, the Moscow Times reported citing Russia’s emergencies ministry.

All 10 people on board the plane have been killed, as per the ministry’s preliminary information, as reported by ANI.

According to Rosaviatsia, the Russian government’s aviation agency, an individual with Prigozhin’s name was on board.
Prigozhin’s condition and whereabouts remain unknown as of yet.

Moscow Times has reported that the bodies of all 10 passengers have been recovered. Prighozin’s name appears alongside Dmitry Utkin, a co-founder of Wagner and a top commander in the mercenary group.

Igor Rudenya, the governor of the Tver area, has taken “personal control” of the response to the plane crash, according to his press department, which also noted that the aircraft was a civil one, according to Moscow Times.
More details awaited.

It is notable here that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the mercenary group PMC Wagner, had started an alleged ‘coup’ against Russian President Vladimir Putin in the month of June. Alleging differences with the Russian Ministry of Defense and government in general, Prighozin had started a ‘mutiny’ and had proceeded to Moscow.

On the 23rd of June, the Wagner Group staged a rebellion against the Russian leadership and its military. However, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko brokered a deal between Russian President Putin and Wagner chief Prigozhin

As a result of this deal, Prigozhin was allowed to take exile in Belarus. On the 25th of June, Belarusian President Lukashenko confirmed Prigozhin’s arrival in Belarus. Soon after, the Russian government gave an option to Wagner fighters to join the formal Russian military, and a crackdown against Prighozin’s business empire was launched. Currently, the group is engaged in combat in Ukraine and several regions of Africa. Wagner Group is currently the world’s largest mercenary organization and soldiers from around the world join it to continue a career in combat.

Responding to news of Prighozin’s mutiny against his government, President Putin declared it an act of treason against Russia and stated that Russia would answer to those who betrayed the nation.

Chandrayaan-3 lands on the Moon: What is so special about the Moon’s South Pole?

At around 6:04 PM IST on Wednesday (23 August), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) etched itself as well as India’s name in the annals of history by demonstrating the capabilities of soft-landing on the lunar surface. Evidently, the moment Vikram lander touched the lunar south pole, India became the first nation to achieve this momentous feat.

Overall, India has become the fourth nation to ace a soft landing on the moon only after the former Soviet Union (Russia), the U.S., and China. However, all of the earlier successful spacecraft missions including NASA’s Apollo and Surveyor or the Soviet Luna missions landed in or around the equatorial region.

Click here, to read about the chronology of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

This means that previous successful missions landed at sites that were located a few degrees latitude north or south of the lunar equator. In the lunar equatorial region, the terrain is generally flatter and comparatively more lander-friendly as against the dark side of the moon, the opposite side of the moon which is hidden from view as seen from Earth.

According to an Indian Express report, the furthest any spacecraft has gone from the equator was Surveyor 7 which was launched by NASA. It landed on the moon way back on 10 January 1968 and it landed near 40 degrees south latitude.

In the recent past, several lunar space missions found it hard to pull off successful soft landing in sites that are nearer to the coveted South pole of the moon. Some of them are as follows –

In April 2019, an Israeli lunar mission aimed for a South Pole landing unfortunately ended in a crash.

Even India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission, launched in 2019, had the objective of landing on the Moon’s south pole. However, during the mission’s concluding stages, the lander carrying the rover encountered an unfortunate mishap and crashed on the lunar surface. It was later revealed that the Chandrayaan-2 failed to achieve its stated aim because of a software error and some other reasons.

However, in the same year, China’s Chang’e 4 mission became the first spacecraft to land on the far side of the moon and it landed near the 45-degree latitude.

Earlier this week, there was a hyped-friendly rivalry between Luna 25 and Chandrayaan-3 lunar missions. Apparently, Russian space mission Luna-25 was racing against time and it also wanted to have a soft landing near the lunar south pole region. However, it faltered and ultimately crashed on the moon’s surface.

So, this raises the question: Why have numerous missions struggled to accomplish a task that has been successfully carried out at various other spots on the moon’s surface? What makes achieving a soft landing difficult in the southern polar terrain of the moon?

Evidently, the challenge stems from the inherently rugged nature of the southern polar terrain. This region is tougher, bumpier, littered with craters, and has deep trenches. Adding to the complexity, the area lacks proper sunlight, resulting in temperatures as low as –230°C. These formidable conditions have posed obstacles for past missions, making ISRO’s successful endeavor all the more impressive and noteworthy.

Now, it is clear that despite the associated risks, the Moon’s south pole holds immense appeal for countries worldwide. This prompts the question: If this task is so daunting, why is this region becoming more crowded over time?

The many reasons underpinning the importance of exploring the moon’s South pole

  1. Could hold a key for revealing secrets hidden for billions of years: Sunlight or darkness blankets nearly all areas of the Moon but things are different at the moon’s south pole.

In this region, sunlight strikes at a different angle creating lengthy shadows that stretch across the lunar craters. Certain craters remain in perpetual shadow, where sunlight never reaches their depths. Consequently, it is believed that these craters might hold ancient ice deposits that have remained concealed for billions of years. Furthermore, this incredibly cold—effectively frozen—area might hold valuable clues about the early days of the Solar System.

  1. Water: Earlier, lunar orbiters, including India’s preceding pair of Moon orbiters (Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2), have detected traces of hydroxyl (OH) and water on the Moon

This means that there is strong evidence that the lunar south pole has the presence of ice molecules in it. Now, if there’s enough water present, it might serve as drinking water for explorers and help keep equipment cool. Thus, the presence of water could play a crucial role in future planetary explorations and in achieving ‘space civilisation’.

The ancient water ice could also offer insights into lunar volcanoes and the origins of oceans.

The water could be split into hydrogen and oxygen, which would have significant implications for space exploration missions, including those to Mars.

  1. Volatiles: Ammonia and methane, among other substances, could potentially be found at the lunar south pole.
  1. Geological insights: The southern pole of the moon is captivating from a geological insight as well. This area features the South Pole-Aitken basin, the moon’s largest impact basin. Investigating the South Pole-Aitken basin could unlock valuable knowledge about the moon’s origins and how it has evolved over time.
  1. Astronomical observations: The lunar south pole serves as an excellent vantage point for celestial observations. The permanent shadows at certain craters shield it from the Sun’s radiation. This makes them optimal for studying radio waves and various forms of radiation that are typically blocked by the Earth’s atmosphere.
  1. Lunar mining: Although, the United Nations Outer Space Treaty of 1967, bars any nation from claiming ownership of the moon, it doesn’t have provisions that would stop commercial operations.

In fact, Initiated by the United States, a collaborative initiative called the Artemis Accords has gained endorsement from 27 nations. The primary goal is to establish a framework of principles guiding lunar exploration and the responsible use of its resources. However, China and Russia have not signed it.

For all these reasons, more countries are in line to explore the lunar south pole despite hardships and failures prior to the Chandrayaan-3’s successful demonstration.

Since the Luna 25 resulted in a failure, Russia would attempt another soft landing on the lunar surface near the south pole at some later stage. Moreover, both the United States and China have missions in the pipeline for the lunar South Pole.

After India became the first nation to demonstrate a soft landing in this region, the US is eager to become the first country to land astronauts at the site, with a crewed Artemis III mission planned for 2025. Apart from the US, China also aims to achieve a soft landing on the coveted South Pole by 2026.

1984 anti-Sikh riots case: Delhi Court orders framing of charges against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar

The Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi on Wednesday ordered the framing of charges against jailed Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in relation to two cases arising from the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The Court ordered the framing of charges in relation to the Janakpuri case pertaining to the killing of two Sikhs, Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh, on November 1, 1984. And second case was registered in Vikaspuri police station related to the burning of Gurcharan Singh on November 2, 1984.

The Court ordered the framing of charges against Sajjan Kumar under sections of IPC 147 (Punishment for rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (offence is committed by any member of unlawful assembly in prosecution of the common object of that assembly), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups), 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 307 (attempt of murder), 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (deals with punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 395 (Punishment for Decoity) and 426 (Punishment for mischief) etc.

However, the court ordered to discharge him for the offences U/S 302 (Punishment for Murder) and 325 (Punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The Special Judge MK Nagpal on Wednesday while ordering the framing of charges said, “This court is of prima facie view that the oral and documentary evidence placed on record by the prosecution is sufficient to hold that an unlawful assembly or mob consisting of hundreds of persons and armed with deadly weapons like dandas, iron rods, bricks and stones etc. had gathered near the Gurudwara situated in Gulab Bagh, Nawada on November 1, 1984.

The court noted that the accused Sajjan Kumar was also a part of the said mob and the common object of the said mob was to put the above-mentioned Gurudwara on fire and to burn and loot the articles lying therein and also to burn and destroy the houses of Sikhs situated in the said locality, to damage, destroy or loot their articles or property and to kill the Sikhs residing in that locality, in order to avenge the killing of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Hence, a prima facie case is held to be made out against the accused Sajjan Kumar for the commission of the offences punishable U/S’s147/148/149/153A/295/307/308/323/325/395/436 IPC and charges are accordingly directed to be framed against him for the said offences.

Further, in the alternative, a charge for the offence of abetment defined by Section 107 IPC and made punishable by Section 109 r/w 114 IPC in relation to the above-said offences is also directed to be framed against the accused as the accused being principal abettor was present at the scene of the crime, when the offences abetted by him were committed by the other unknown offenders, the court further noted.

However, as far as the offences committed during the incident dated November 2, 1984, which relate to the murder of Sohan Singh and Avtar Singh at the hands of members of the mob or crowd, which had gathered on that date near or outside the Congress party office in Uttam Nagar, and also the injuries suffered by complainant Harvinder Singh in the said incident, are concerned, the accused is being discharged for the offences U/S 302 and 325 IPC respectively committed in the said incident for the reasons already discussed in this order, court said.

Manish Rawat, Gaurav Singh, Addl Public Prosecutors represented the prosecution/CBI in the matter and Anil Kumar Sharma and SA Hashmi, Anuj Sharma Counsels appeared for Sajjan Kumar in the matter.

Forced to sign conversion Islam and Nikah papers: Saurabh Kant Tiwari on Bangladeshi wife Sonia Akhtar who came to India along with son

0

A fresh development has occurred in the case of 29-year-old Sonia Akhtar from Dhaka, who travelled to Noida from Bangladesh with her one-year-old son to find her alleged husband. She presented the Noida police with the documents of her Indian husband Saurabh Kant Tiwari’s conversion to Islam and their marriage certificate. The investigation into the matter is presently underway.

However, the 47-year-old resident of Greater Noida’s Shivalik Homes Society charged that she and her family members forced him to sign the certificate and the document. He disclosed to Aaj Tak that he had received multiple calls from the police in connection with his testimony.

He stated that they became intimate after they grew close. Meanwhile, she captured objectionable photos and footage of him which were used to threaten him to tie the knot with her. The couple got married in an Islamic ceremony in April 2021.

According to him, he was pressured into paying Rs 1 crore after the wedding. He asserted that she was already aware of his first wife and children who live in India. He was fired from his work in the neighbouring country and left for India after informing her of everything. Despite this, they are subjected to blackmail through photos and videos.

He mentioned that he has filed for divorce in Bangladesh, but she continues to trouble him with her visits to India. He accused that he had not committed any crime in India, but he was under pressure from the police. He also conveyed that they asked him to make arrangements for her stay here. He voiced that he is prepared to accept the judgement rendered by the Bangladesh court. He also intended to comply with any orders to pay child support.

However, Sonia Akhtar’s attorney argued that he lied to her during his time in Bangladesh. Saurabh Kant Tiwari claimed his first wife had passed away and they would be happy after their marriage. Afterwards, he embraced Islam and wed her as well as presented multiple photographs of the pair. The lawyer informed that her infant son was in poor health condition.

The Bangladeshi citizen filed a complaint in this regard to the Noida Police on 21 August. The instance is being probed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Women’s Security. She arrived at the women’s police station in Noida two days earlier and submitted that she married him two years prior on 14 April.

She informed the police that he used to work at Culti Max Energy Pvt Ltd in Dhaka from January 2017 to December 2021. He left her and returned to India after their marriage, based on her. She has reached India with legal paperwork and noted that she wanted to be with her spouse. He has also handed over his and his son’s passport along with visa and citizen card to the police.

‘We salute the passengers who have gone to the moon’: Rajasthan Sports Minister Ashok Chandna after the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 mission

0

On Wednesday (23 August), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) created history by successfully demonstrating the soft-landing capabilities on the lunar surface. The more striking achievement is that the space agency carried out this ambitious task near the south pole of the Moon which has been relatively a lesser-known frontier for humankind since now.

With the successful lunar landing of Vikram lander in the Chandrayaan-3 mission, India has become the first nation to successfully carry out a soft landing near the moon’s south pole and only the fourth country to achieve a successful landing on the moon after the US, Russia and China. Following the momentous occasion, the ISRO Chief made the confirmation announcement stating, “India is on the Moon”, words which have now been etched for eternity.

Afterwards, social media was abuzz with congratulatory messages for both ISRO and India. While everyone shared the positive news in their own style, one uncanny reaction by a Congress leader caught everybody’s attention. Apparently, Rajasthan’s Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ashok Chandna believed that the Chandrayaan-3 is a manned mission and India has sent astronauts to the moon.

While speaking to media persons seeking his response, Congress Minister Chandna said ‘we got success and achieved a safe landing. I salute all those passengers who went there.’

He said, “Hum kamyaab huye aur safe landing hui toh jo yaatri gaye hain unko salam karta hoon aur hamara desh ek kadam aur science mein, space research ke andar aage badha usko sabhi deshwasiyo ko badhai deta hoon.”

Now, it is pertinent to note that Chandrayaan-3 is an unmanned mission, and apart from the automatic landing sequence, it was guided by ISRO’s command and control centre on earth.

As the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is an unmanned mission, that is, it has no passengers onboard. By the way, space “passengers” are known as astronauts.

The Congress Minister Chandna’s gesture of saluting ‘passengers who went in Chandrayaan’ made him the centre of a new social media storm. While some questioned the “scientific temper” of Rajasthan’s Youth minister, others hailed and saluted ‘Gems of Congress’.

Here is how social media has reacted to his remarks.

One X user argued that for these reasons, it is imperative that there should be educational criteria for becoming a politician.

Another user sarcastically asked about the passenger list of who went on the Chandrayaan 3 mission.

Interestingly, one user saluted the Congress Minister for saluting the imaginary passengers who went with Chandrayaan-3. The user further insinuated that only God can save sportspersons in Rajasthan.
