In this connection, a man identified as Amaran has been arrested and spurious liquor seized from his possession has been sent to the lab to ascertain the presence of methanol in it, police said.
On Sunday chief minister Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh to each of the families of the deceased and also announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to those hospitalised.

The spurious liquor seized from Ekkiyarkuppam Village of Marakkanam, Villupuram districts, was sent for forensics
“In the Villupuram incident, Amaran was arrested. Investigating him, it was found that he brought the spurious liquor from Muthu and Muthu said he brought it from Pondicherry Elumazlai,” he further said.
The DGP said that the spurious liquor that caused the tragedy in both districts was brought from the same place and the same person.
“Similarly, Ammavasai has been arrested who sold spurious liquor in Chithamoor, Perunkaranai and Perambakkam. Ammavasai also took those spurious liquor and got treatment at the hospital. During the interrogation, he said that he brought spurious liquor from Velu and his brother Chandhiran. Vilambur Viji said spurious liquor was brought from Pondicherry,” he added.
Earlier, the police had said that there was no evidence found of a link between the two incidents.
He also said that in the year 2022 – 1,40,649 cases have been registered in connection with Spurious Liquor and 1,39,697 accused have been arrested.

The students of Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University floated a platform to find the “right path and purpose of life”. How simple and benign the idea may appear, the sinister plan behind an organisation that has been flourishing in Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia raises serious concerns. ‘Al Haya Min Allah’, an organisation formed in 2019 and runs the ‘Haya’ Program in educational institutes to spread Islam among students, has been operating under the radar, carrying on undeterred with its patriarchal, supremacist, and profoundly communal agenda.
Secularism and plurality, the two catchphrases of the left-liberal intelligentsia, have taken a back seat at Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia, where the ‘Al Haya Min Allah’ campaign seeks to indoctrinate impressionable young minds with the poison of Islamic fundamentalism, contempt toward universal suffrage that democracy grants, and supremacist radicalisation that entails dismissing other faiths as fake.
One may argue that preaching a religion is everyone’s right under the Constitution, and it is correct. But how far is it correct to use the platform to tell the same democracy that gives you the right to preach your religion is “useless”?
What is Haya Campaign?
It is a month-long Dawah campaign that Al Haya Min Allah runs at the university campus that includes an “awareness program” about Islam, workshops, offline and online competitions and Haya Conference at the end.
Anti democracy propaganda
Under its program, the organisation talks extensively against democracy. For example, in a post from February 2020, they said, “Rule is for Allah, the Highest, the Almighty, and it is not permissible to give legislative rights to any human being, no matter who he is.” In simple words, the organisation is against the democratic system and wants Sharia (The rule of Allah) to be implemented.
Door-to-door promotion of the ‘Haya’ campaign
The organisation runs a door-to-door pamphlet distribution campaign in AMU hostels and “informs” students about the “need to inculcate the Islamic concept of hayah in daily lives”. It is unclear if they meet only Muslim students or if they preach the religion to the students of other religions in the hostel as well.
Campaign against nationalism
Since the Modi government came to power, the spirit of nationalism among the Indians has increased exponentially. Many see it as a red flag, including the Al Gaya Min Allah organisation. In a post from February 2020, the organisation called nationalism a “ridiculous ideology” as it binds people to a piece of land. The post read, “Nationalism forces people inside one walled piece of land to have brotherhood for one another and espouse enmity against those on the other side of the wall whom he/she has never met.”
It further quoted Allama Iqbal Rahimaullah saying, “In taza Khuda mein bada sabsay watan hai, Jo pairahan iska hai, voh mazhab ka kafan hai (Of all the new false gods, the biggest is the motherland (watan), The garment of this idea is actually the death shroud of religion.)”
‘Identify them as kafir, or you are not a Muslim.’
In a post from March 2020, the organisation said that the Quran is the Constitution for Muslims and no human has the right to decide what is lawful and what is unlawful. It further talked about Taghoot, a person who has attained extreme in ‘kufr’. Taghoot ” misleads others, that he calls others to his own worship or obedience or following, against the sole rights of Allah,” it added.
They asked their fellow Muslims to reject Taghoot and its followers. It read, “This means one has to identify the rapids, the Jews, the Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists – all as kafir; otherwise, he is not a Muslim himself. If a person cannot distinguish between a mushrik and a Muslim, then he doesn’t know what Islam is! How can a person who doesn’t know Islam bring Eeman (Iman) on it?”
In another post, the organisation termed nationalism, communism, secularism, tribalism, democracy, capitalism, feminism, United Nations, socialism and liberalism as ‘Taghoot’. It further asked its followers to reject it by disliking them, having enmity towards them, calling them Kuft and fighting with them.
The organisation has also waged war against the university’s cultural programs and student fests. In a poster from February 2023, it claimed that in the name of culture and education, indecency is being spread across campus.
Campaign against Hindu festivals
The organisation also runs campaigns against Hindu festivals. In a video from March this year, it urged the Muslims not to play Holi and tell whoever wants to put colour on them that they have accepted the ‘colour’ of Allah and there is no better colour than of Allah. A clip in the video read, “Allah ke rang alawa kufar ke rang mein na rang jaana. Aur na uhne apne qareeb phailne dena (Don’t colour yourself other than the colour of Allah. Don’t let the colour of Kufar come close to you).”
Promotion of Hijab
Students of AMU, the organisation linked to the Haya Campaign, often promote hijab for women and ask women to “dress modestly”.

In another post, SAMU called the hijab ‘kafan’ of secularism and liberalism.
Source: Facebook
They also use children in the campaign. There is a video on their page from January 20, 2023, where a small girl child in hijab speaks about “morality against immorality”.
Wajihuddin Ali Khan, who is the preacher at the organisation, regularly goes to different locations in the university and gives hours-long speeches using a portable mic and speaker. He often uses places like eating joints established on the campus to spread the organisation’s ideology. For example, in this teaser of his speech, he is talking about “educating” people to follow the “Haya” ideology and, if they do not, keep a distance from them. If they do not maintain distance, he urged his fellow Muslims to use “words and hands” without fear.
One of Wajihuddin’s speeches was shared by Students of AMU on its page during anti-CAA protests. The speech was given during Jinnah’s poster row before anti-CAA protests. However, SAMU said it was relevant during those protests as well. Wajihuddin was extensively active during anti-CAA protests.
When the Government of India raided several locations of the Islamic Terrorist organisation Popular Front of India in September 2022, Wajihuddin supported PFI. He wrote, “Being Muslim is enough for NIA raids”.
Source: Facebook
In another post, he wrote, “Sharjeel Imam had said, ‘From day one, this Constitution is fascist’. I agree with his statement. But why? What can you expect from something that was built on the foundation of Kufr? You have to understand pFI. Constitution is the biggest Chariot of Kufr that all the political parties and organisations are pulling. If we remove these organisations (RSS etc.), others will pull this Chariot. If this Chariot is the Chariot of justice in your eyes, then why look at the other? Tomorrow, you will pull this Chariot and become part of the injustice. Wouldn’t you?”

The campaign is active in Jamia Millia Islamia University as well. Mohammad Arshad Warsi is the face of the organisation in Jamia. Warsi extended his support for Sharjeel Imam following his arrest and wrote several posts supporting him.
In a post from January 20, 2020, he wrote, “We must support and defend our brother in faith Sharjeel Imam against the media of the oppressors, Republic TV… When most of the “Muslim” organizations and political parties including many of the Ulema (Ulema e Su) and intellectuals were hugging and kissing Ajit Doval to maintain “Peace”, Sharjeel Imam stood against these oppressors and we joined him for the sake of Allah alone. He stood in the same way against the oppressors when NRC and CAA were imposed and we are struggling side by side, not for the sake of saving secularism or democracy or constitution, but for the sake of our identity La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah, for the sake of Allah.”

From promoting hijab for women, campaigns against nationalism, and Hindu festivals to dreaming about imposing Islamic law in the country, Al Haya Min Allah has a long history of problematic posts and events.
In the Rewari district of Haryana, a recent case has emerged challenging the belief held by some individuals who identify as left-liberals that Love Jihad is a nonexistent phenomenon. The local police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Mausam Khan, a Muslim individual, who stands accused of allegedly ensnaring a Hindu woman, subjecting her to assault, and coercing her into converting to Islam.
The police filed the FIR based on the complaint filed by the woman who said that she was also raped by the brother of the accused. The saga began in the year 2020 when the woman met the accused at her college. She was studying in her BA second year when the accused Khan introduced himself as a Hindu man named Prem to the woman.
The individual in question cultivated a friendship with the woman, gradually building her trust. During their interactions, he made claims about having influential connections within his family and assured her that he would assist in securing a promising job for her once she completed her education. Additionally, he showered her with gifts and professed his love for her, ultimately luring her into a romantic entanglement from which she found it difficult to extricate herself.
During their relationship, the accused forcefully took her to Haridwar on his bike and raped her. On the next day then ie on November 19, 2020, he got married to a woman in a temple in Haridwar.
According to the woman’s statement in the complaint, a series of events unfolded on November 20. The accused’s father, Tahir Khan, along with his uncles Tasavvar, Akbar, Suleman, and their friend Babulal, arrived in Haridwar. Under coercive circumstances, they forcibly transported the woman and the accused to Uton village in Nuh. There, through intimidation involving the use of firearms, she was compelled to convert her religion to Islam and partake in a forced ‘Nikah’ ceremony. It was during this distressing incident that she discovered her husband’s true identity as Mausam Khan, a Muslim, rather than the previously known name of Prem.
The girl happened to protest after knowing the truth but was kept hostage in a home. Amid this, Khan’s brother Salim raped her. She was also brutally thrashed by the family members of the accused.
The victim girl managed to escape from the spot on April 19 this year as the family members of the accused were not at home. She reached her maternal family and narrated the entire episode to them. The family supported the victim and took her to Dharuhera police station to register a police complaint. The police have registered a case against Mausam Khan, his father Tahir Khan, brother Salim Khan and others under various relevant sections of the law.
‘Journalist’ Ali Sohrab, who has gained notoriety for posting controversial and bigoted content on his Twitter profile, recently shared fake news about the unfortunate accident of a South African tourist in Meerut to defame India.
Sohrab took to Twitter to take potshots at Indians for robbing the belongings of the South African tourist after she met with an accident instead of helping her and taking her to the hospital for treatment.
“Carina of South Africa was going to visit Rishikesh in India, met with an accident on the way, after which the injured Carina lay on the roadside for about an hour. During this, instead of helping her, the Indians stole Carina’s shoes, ear bird and other belongings,” Sohrab tweeted in Hindi while taking a dig at the Sanskrit verse ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, which is akin to ‘A guest is a God’ and embodies the traditional Indian Hindu-Buddhist philosophy of revering guests with the same respect as a god.
According to the police, Carina, a resident of Cape Town, South Africa, had reached Delhi on Saturday evening. From here she was going to Rishikesh by cab to visit her friend. A tractor driver applied brakes to save a bike rider near the Shobhapur flyover in Kankarkheda. Due to this, the girl’s cab collided with the tractor.
Meerut Police debunks fake claims of South African tourist being deprived of her belongings after her accident
Contrary to allegations, the Meerut Police have refuted claims of a South African tourist being robbed following her accident. In an official statement, the police have categorically denied reports suggesting that the tourist was deprived of her belongings after the incident. The police further emphasized that during their conversation with the victim, she confirmed having all her possessions intact except for her AirPods, the wireless earphones she had lost.
Additionally, the police stated that the young woman’s iPhone suffered significant damage in the incident, making it challenging to track the whereabouts of the AirPods. The vehicle involved in the accident has also sustained extensive damage. Currently, a search operation is being conducted at the accident site, and witnesses present at the scene have not reported any theft or loss of belongings regarding the South African tourist.
Ali Sohrab was arrested in November 2019 for celebrating the death of Kamlesh Tiwari, who was killed by Islamists
That said, this is not the first time that Ali Sohrab has been found peddling fake news and divisive rhetoric. In November 2022, Sohrab was arrested for his hate-filled comments celebrating the death of Kamlesh Tiwari, who was hacked to death by Islamists. Ali Sohrab’s attempts to incite and spew venom against Hindus had not stopped there. He even threatened journalist Rohit Sardana and his child by saying he will pray for Sardana and his kid that someday in the future, Sardana’s kid should experience the ‘hatred’ caused due to Hindu-Muslims tensions.
Sohrab had been continuously indulging in sharing fake and inciteful posts on his social media pages. In September, following the abrogation of Article 370 by the centre, Sohrab had tried to pass off an old image of two army men cleaning a pool of blood on a road as a recent one. He shared the misleading image implying that it was taken during the ongoing situation in Kashmir.

As Congress deliberates on who should be the chief minister of Karnataka, party state president DK Shivakumar, one of the frontrunners for the post in the southern State on Tuesday said that he would file a defamation case against the media channels which are making false claims over his resignation.
“If any channel is reporting that I am resigning from the post, I will file a defamation case against them…Some of them are reporting that I will resign…My mother is my party, I built this party. My high command, my MLAs, my party are there,” Karnataka Congress President told the reporters. Other claimants are also emerging as supporters of G Parameshwara staged protest and said he was ready to take up the responsibility if the party high command asked him to run the government.
“If the high command wants, I am ready to take up the responsibility,” the former Deputy Chief Minister told reporters while demanding that a Dalit should become CM.
Shivakumar on Tuesday arrived at the office of his brother and Congress leader DK Suresh.
Despite Congress’ clear mandate in the Karnataka assembly polls, suspense over the chief minister continues as senior leaders DK Shivakumar, who is the Karnataka Congress’ president, and Siddaramaiah, former chief minister and leader of the opposition are in the race.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today met party president Mallikarjun Kharge who is set to make his decision after going through the Congress central observers’ report, which was submitted yesterday.
However, Shivakumar who had earlier cancelled his visit to the national capital on Monday evening citing health issues, arrived in Delhi today. The Congress won 135 seats in the recently held election to the 224-member Karnataka assembly.
Earlier in the day, Shivakumar, in an exclusive interview with ANI made it clear that he would not resort to “backstabbing or blackmail” regardless of the party’s decision.
“If the party wants they can give me the responsibility……. Ours is a united house, our number is 135. I don’t want to divide anyone here. Whether they like me or not, I am a responsible man. I will not backstab and I will not blackmail,” he said.
“The Party is my god…We have built this party, I am a part of it and I am not alone in this,” he said before his departure from Bengaluru.
“We have built this party (Congress), we have built this house. I am a part of it…A mother will give everything to her child,” he said.
Asked about his expectations as the state party president, Shivakumar said,” I don’t want to comment on what has happened earlier. How it happened. That is a closed chapter we formed the government we lost the government, we lost a coalition government. Who is responsible for the victory and loss there is no use of talking about it now. Let us not sell this story… let us sell the future.”

On Tuesday, May 16, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an espionage case against a freelance defense journalist identified as Vivek Raghuvanshi and alleged that he sold sensitive information related to DRDO and future procurements of Indian armed forces to foreign countries for money.
According to the reports, the CBI is also conducting raids and searches at 12 locations in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Jaipur in this case. The officials believe that Raghuvanshi also sold information related to diplomatic and strategic talks of India with friendly nations to other countries for money.
Raghuvanshi was allegedly sharing it with intelligence agencies of foreign countries, the CBI stated amid the massive action in the said espionage case. CBI said that Raghuvanshi collected ‘sensitive’ and ‘minute’ details of DRDO and sold it for money.
Vivek Raghuvanshi is a Delhi-based freelance journalist who writes defense-related articles. As per his LinkedIn profile, he has been working as a freelance journalist for 32+ years.
