The incident took place on October 17 last year in the Bhindi Bazar area of Gujarat’s Surat. Police informed that a 14-year-old boy, Irfan, was beaten by his friend and his elder brother, after they had an argument over the Free Fire game.

Mann govt transfers Health Secretary Ajoy Kumar after he objects to spending Rs 30 crore on advertising Mohalla clinics outside Punjab

On January 20, Punjab IAS officer Ajoy Sharma, who was serving as Health Secretary, was transferred out of the health department for allegedly refusing to allow expenditure of Rs 30 crore on the publicity of mohalla clinics in states across India. Notably, Indian Express, quoting sources, said the Punjab government had spent only Rs 10 crore on the clinics themselves.

Sharma was the Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, and Finance Commissioner (Taxation). He was removed from both posts. As of now, he has not been allotted any other department. VK Meena will handle the department of health for now, while Vikar Partap will serve as Finance Commissioner (Taxation).

On the last Independence Day, the AAP government opened 75 mohalla clinics in the state. IAS Sharma handled the backend during the setting up process of the clinics. The Punjab government is set to inaugurate more such mohalla clinics next week around Republic Day.

Rs 30 crore for ads in other states

As per the Indian Express report, two meetings were held on the promotion of mohalla clinics where Sharma was present. He reportedly refused to permit ad spending of Rs 30 crore for the publicity of the clinics stating that the department has already spent Rs 10 crore on these clinics. Sources to IE said that he allegedly said it would not be possible for him to justify spending another Rs 30 crore on the publicity of the scheme in other states like Tamil Nadu.

He reportedly said during the meeting that the people of Tamil Nadu would not benefit from the mohalla clinics in Punjab, and it was impossible to justify the money spent on ads in South India.

During the meeting on Friday, he refused to sanction the money for advertisements for the second time in a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar. Soon after the meeting, he was removed from both departments. The chief secretary, however, denied allegations that he was removed for refusing to sanction money for ads. He said, “Ajoy Sharma is a good officer. He will get a new posting next week. These are routine transfers. These keep happening.”

Sharma was removed over corruption charges, said reports

On the other hand, some reports have suggested that Sharma was removed from the posts over corruption charges. As per a report in TV9 Hindi, Sharma took advantage of the faith shown by the Mann government and allotted tenders arbitrarily. Furthermore, it has been claimed that he benefitted close ones while buying and selling heavy machines. TV9 quoted unnamed sources saying that when State Chief Secretary summoned him to question about the charges, he allegedly said he did not care if anyone set up an enquiry against him.

The opposition hits out at AAP

Soon after the reports emerged that Ajoy Sharma was removed for allegedly refusing to sanction money for ads, opposition leaders in Punjab hit out at the AAP government. National Spokesperson of BJP, Sambit Patra said, “If wasting Public money is an art, then AAP is the progenitor of such an art form. The AAP government has transferred Punjab Health Secretary for refusing to sanction money for the advertisement of Mohalla Clinics in states other than Punjab.”

Congress MLA from Abohar, Sandeep Jakhar said, “At least someone has a spine..30 crores just for publicity. Imagine all that can be done for the hospitals with that money. If only more officers would look after the state’s interests first.”

Parambans Singh Romana, National Spokesperson of Akali Dal, said, “Budget for Mohalla clinics- 10 Cr. Budget for advt outside Punjab- 30 Cr. IAS officer Ajoy Sharma pressured, he refuses sanction saying “how will I justify advertising these in states like TN”. Result – Transferred same evening. Splurging Punjab’s money to glorify Kejriwal has to stop.”

Punjab govt criticised for spending money in Gujarat on ads

This is not the first time the Punjab government has faced criticism for spending money on ads in other states. Before Gujarat Assembly Elections, it was revealed that the Punjab government had spent a substantial amount of money on Facebook ads in Gujarat. Many ads were published in the Gujarati language, targeting specifically the poll-bound state. AAP managed to win only five seats in the assembly elections in Gujarat.

‘Some are not over colonial intoxication, consider BBC above SC,’ Kiren Rijiju on documentary on PM Modi

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday took on the “malicious campaigns” inside and outside India in connection to the UK’s British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)’s documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said that some people “consider the BBC above the Supreme Court of India”.

The Union Minister alleged that they “lower” the country’s dignity and image to any extent to “please their moral masters”. Taking to Twitter, Rijiju said that minorities in the country are moving ahead positively.

“Minorities, or for that matter every community in India is moving ahead positively. India’s image cannot be disgraced by malicious campaigns launched inside or outside India. PM @narendramodi Ji’s voice is the voice of 1.4 billion Indians,” Rijiju tweeted.

“Some people in India still haven’t gotten over the colonial intoxication. They consider BBC above the Supreme Court of India and lower the country’s dignity and image to any extent to please their moral masters,” the Minister added (roughly translated from Hindi).

He said that there is no hope from these people whose “only aim is to weaken India”.

“Anyway, there is no better hope from these tukde tukde gang members whose only aim is to weaken the might of India,” Rijiju tweeted.

Earlier, former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Sanjeev Tripathi slammed UK’s British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for its documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it “prejudiced, biased and full of factual errors”.
He added that the documentary needs to be condemned by everyone.

Speaking to ANI, Tripathi questioned the BBC’s intent behind the documentary on PM Modi, which he said seems ‘motivated’. He said the documentary features the 2002 Gujarat riots and the Godhra train burning incident, which preceded it, adding that the Supreme Court recently gave PM Modi a clean chit in the case.

“This documentary of BBC, which claims to examine the so-called tensions between Hindus and Muslims in India, and in that context, talks about again the so-called controversial policies of Prime Minister Modi, is not only prejudiced but is also biased and full of factual errors,” he said.

In a strong response to the BBC documentary, more than 300 eminent Indians, including retired judges, bureaucrats, and armed forces veterans signed a statement slamming the British national broadcaster for showing “unrelenting prejudice” towards India and its leader.

Vinod Tomar, Wrestling Federation’s Additional Secretary, suspended by Sports Ministry following the wrestlers’ protest

0

Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), was suspended on Saturday. by the Union Ministry of Sports. The suspension came following the protest by the wrestlers against the wrestling federation and its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Tomar’s presence will be “detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline,” the ministry stated in a letter shared by PTI.

The letter further said, “The Ministry has taken note of the reports about the functioning of the WFI, including the role of Shri Vinod Tomar, and, has reasons to believe that his continued presence will be detrimental to the development of this high-priority discipline.”

The ministry decided to suspend him “with immediate effect”, to ensure the proper functioning of WFI. In addition, the ministry has ordered the WFI to halt all ongoing activities with immediate effect, including the Ranking Tournament in Brij Bhushan’s hometown of Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.

In a statement to ANI, earlier on Saturday, Tomar claimed that the wrestlers who staged a dharna at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, and accused the WFI president of financial irregularities and sexual harassment, had not provided any proof to back up their claims.

The suspended WFI official said that when ANI approached him to seek his response to the development, that is how he learned of it. He denied receiving any information regarding his removal.

Tomar was removed a day after Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of Sports, announced the creation of an oversight committee to look into the accusations made against Brij Bhushan and his organization by some of the best wrestlers in the nation, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Ravi Dahiya. The committee will have the authority to decide on any issues relating to Indian wrestling and will also be in charge of managing the federation’s daily operations.

In a press release, the ministry said it has communicated to WFI that in view of the Government’s decision to appoint an Oversight Committee to investigate the various allegations raised by athletes, WFI will suspend all ongoing activities with immediate effect.

It added, “In view of the direction to suspend all activities immediately, the Sports Ministry has asked WFI to also cancel the ongoing Ranking Tournament in Gonda, UP.” In this connection, the ministry has additionally directed WFI to refund the entry fees that were collected from the attendees for the ongoing event.

Earlier, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had received a deadline from the Ministry of Sports on Thursday, January 19, to resign from his position, after protesting wrestlers met Sports Minister Anurag Thakur at his home. The wrestlers decided to terminate their protest after the Sports Ministry promised to take measures and conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations.

The Indian Olympic Association has established a seven-member committee under the leadership of M C Mary Kom to look into the allegations against Brij Bhushan before the wrestlers decided to end their protest. Along with Yogeshwar Dutt and Mary Kom, the panel also includes Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF), and former archer Dola Banerjee. Former shuttler and IOA joint secretary Alaknanda Ashok will serve as the group’s vice chairperson, the committee also includes two advocates, Talish Ray and Shlok Chandra.

The decision was made during the IOA’s emergency Executive Council meeting, which was also attended by IOA President PT Usha, joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey, Olympic bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt, and champion shooter Abhinav Bindra.

‘Want to reduce madarsas in Assam’, says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

0

On Saturday, January 22, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government wants to reduce the number of madarsas in the state and start a registration system for them. Sarma also said that his government is closely working with the Muslim community on this.

During a press conference, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We want to reduce the number of madarsas in the state in the first phase.” He continued, “We want to start a registration system in Madrasas and put general education in Madrasas.”

CM Sarma continued, “We want to start a registration system in madarsas and put general education in madarsas. We are working on this and the minority community is also helping us.”

This statement from the Assam CM comes after the Director General of Police (DGP) Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, informed that discussions were underway for bringing reforms to madarsas in the state. He had said that all small madarsas will be merged with nearby large madarsas to reduce the threat of radicalisation in the state.

Earlier on Monday, DGP Mahanta, while addressing a press conference, said that the state police busted nine modules of terror outfits Ansarul Bangla Team (ABT) and Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), and arrested 53 suspected terrorists last year. He highlighted that one common thing in all the modules busted by police was that they were mostly using madarsas or masjids to radicalise Muslim youths.

DGP Mahanta said that in a bid to curb radicalisation, about 100 small, private madarsas in Assam have already been merged with larger ones. He also pointed out that not all madarsas are involved in radicalisation activities, however, there is a threat as Assam is a soft target since the state has a large Muslim population.

Muslim leaders, according to DGP Mahanta, approached the authorities to report these activities. It was decided to implement educational reforms in madarsas at a meeting attended by 68 community leaders.

Based on the discussions, there will only be one madarsa within a three-kilometre radius. Madarsas with 50 students or fewer will be merged with bigger ones nearby. In addition to teaching Arabic, the updated curriculum will adhere to modern education, especially in terms of skill development for career purposes.

JD Majethia, Himanshu of the popular serial “Khichdi”, narrates how the then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi encouraged him

0

Actor-producer Jamnadas Majethia aka JD Majethdia, recently opened up about his experience of meeting PM Modi while promoting his film ‘Khichdi: The Movie’, which was based on his popular TV show ‘Khichdi’. Khichdi had aired on Star Plus and Majethia, other than being the producer of the show, also played the character of Himanshu Seth in the show.

JD Majethia, while talking about the show, recalled how PM Modi always encouraged him and also said that PM Modi wins everyone’s heart with his warmth. Majethia recalled the time in 2010 when he wanted to invite Narendra Modi, then Chief Minister of Gujarat, to the premiere of his film Khichdi: The Movie.

“I called him in the evening, and when I introduced myself as JD Majethia, he called me the son of Porbandar (bol bhai Porbandar na deekra Bol). He wins your heart, he remembers everything. I explained to him in two minutes that the team of Khichdi is coming to Gujarat for the film’s premiere. It is a comedy movie about a Gujarati family and the first time a TV series has been turned into a film. It is a record for India. I called him again, he (Modi) then asked me to come to Ahmedabad. When my make-up man informed me about a call for me from the Police Commissioner, I was surprised. The Police Commissioner then asked me how we will bring CM Modi to the theatre, and how we will manage his security arrangements,” Majethia recalled.

Majethia went on to say that it was news for him that CM Narendra Modi is coming to attend the premiere of the film. “I told my team to continue with the interviews and I rushed to the theatre as Modi sir is coming. But when I reached the theatre, he was already there,” Majethia added.

‘This is my Gujarat’

Majethia reminisced that when he came forward to touch Narendra Modi’s feet, he hugged him and asked him why so many seats were empty in the theatre when so many people were waiting outside.

Majethia told CM Modi that it was for his security, to this Narendra Modi said, “This is my Gujarat, what fear do I have from anyone here?” He then said that the security personnel can be accommodated in the first row and then allow others to come and sit inside. Then people were seated as he said. It was such a big thing even for the viewers that their CM was sitting with them, Majethia recalled.

Furthermore,  Majethia remembered that a woman brought Sukhdi, a Gujarati sweet that she offered to Narendra Modi. Even though the security personnel tried to stop her, Modi took a piece of Sukhdi from her.

Taking to Twitter, Majethia showered praises on Narendra Modi and wrote, “He lives for the people of his country. He looks at providing opportunities to the deserving one and constantly thinks of taking the nation where it deserves to be, at par and ahead of the developed countries.”

About Khichdi

Khichdi has been ‘served’ to the audience in four different formats- on television as Khichdi, Instant Khichdi, and Khichdi Returns, and in theaters as Khichdi: The Movie. The movie was released in 2010, whereas the TV shows aired in 2002, 2005, and 2018, respectively. Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia have produced each of the four versions. It centers on a peculiar Gujarati family and the hilarious situations they find themselves in. One of the most well-liked families on Indian television, the Parekhs have established themselves as household names over time. The show, its characters like Hansa and Praful, and several dialogues became iconic. Even to this day, the show continues to inspire countless memes online.
