Hyderabad: Police lathi-charge fans for celebrating India’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy finals on the streets

0

On 9th March, India defeated New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final by four wickets. Cricket fans nationwide celebrated the victory with full enthusiasm. Thousands of fans in Telangana flooded the streets, chanting pro-Team India slogans while bursting fireworks. While the celebrations were at their peak, Hyderabad police in Dilsukhnagar resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd, which the police deemed “unruly” and accused the fans of causing traffic jams.

The police action against the cricket fans was condemned by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. Telangana BJP President G Kishan Reddy shared videos of the police resorting to lathi charge against the fans to disperse them and wrote, “This is how the Congress govt. in Telangana is not allowing India’s Champions Trophy 2025 win celebrations. Shameful!”

Condemning police action against fans in Karimnagar, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India, Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned how celebrating India’s victory became a “communal issue”. In a post on X, he wrote, “Can the Home Minister of Telangana, Shri Revanth Reddy garu, clarify— which country is Karimnagar police supporting? We can’t celebrate India’s win, but a flexi with Pakistan’s name will be removed? How does celebrating India’s victory become a ‘communal issue’? Telangana DGP and DG Intelligence should answer why Telangana police are so eager to create law and order problems. Youth will give an appropriate answer to Congress for such high-handedness.”

MP Kumar was quoting a social media user, Vikas, who had shared a video of a police officer arguing with a fan holding the Indian flag. In his post, Vikas stated that the police were allegedly not allowing celebrations of India’s victory, citing communal reasons in Karimnagar.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya shared video from Dilsukhnagar and wrote, “Hyderabad police used lathicharge in Dilsukhnagar to stop citizens from celebrating India’s Champions Trophy victory. Similar scenes were reported in Karimnagar as well. Is this the new playbook in Congress-ruled states? Who exactly are they trying to appease? Where are Indians supposed to celebrate their own country’s victory?”

Media reports, however, stated that the crowd was causing traffic jam leading to police using mild lathi charge to disperse them.

Similar action was taken by Nagpur police as well where police restored to mild lathi charge to disperse the cricket fans blocking the roads.

India won ICC Champions Trophy

India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai. Rohit Sharma led from the front with a 76-run knock, setting up India’s chase of 252. Despite early setbacks, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul steered India to victory in 49 overs. New Zealand’s innings struggled against India’s spinners, with Michael Bracewell’s late fightback taking them to 251/7. This marks India’s third Champions Trophy title.

Chhattisgarh liquor scam: ED raids residence of former CM Bhupesh Baghel’s son Chaitanya Baghel and others

On 10th March, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided at least 14 locations including those connected to Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in relation to the liquor scam that was connected to a money laundering case. The searches were conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at Chaitanya Baghel’s Bhilai properties and at addresses connected to multiple other people in the state.

The state exchequer suffered a “massive loss” as a result of the Chhattisgarh liquor scam, according to the agency, while a liquor syndicate reportedly embezzled more than ₹2,100 (₹2,161) crore through many schemes and the amount was also transferred to Chaitanya Baghel. Bribes were collected from the distillers for each case that the state liquor body purchased. The scam also included the selling of country liquor from state-owned stores, which went completely unreported.

“When the false case that had been ongoing for seven years was dismissed by the court, today, the officials from ED entered the residence of former Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary Bhupesh Baghel in Bhilai this morning. If anyone is attempting to stop Congress in Punjab through this conspiracy, they are mistaken,” Bhupesh Baghel’s office responded to the recent development on social media.

According to media reports, the findings of the probe indicated that distillers who were contracted to supply country liquor to government vendors reportedly delivered over 40 lakh cases of country liquor that were not documented in the books between April 2019 and June 2022. The agency revealed that not a single cent went to the state exchequer even though the liquor was sold to the general public for Rs 3,880 a case.

ED further stated that distillers were required to pay a bribe that enabled them to operate a fixed-market-share liquor cartel. Additionally, commissions were assessed in the overseas liquor market as well.

Several including veteran Chhattisgarh Congress politician Kawasi Lakhma, have previously been apprehended by the ED in the case. The accusations, on the other hand, have been rejected by Bhupesh Baghel, who has described them as politically driven. However, many accused have already been taken into custody regarding the case, including businessemen and bureaucrats.

Uttar Pradesh: Taufiq, Iqbal, Israel, Shaida, and others assault Hindu priest in Rampur for playing bhajans on loudspeaker, 12 arrested so far

On 7th March, a Hindu priest was dragged out of a Shiv Mandir and assaulted by an Islamist mob in Sikandarabad village of Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh. The attack on the hapless priest took place over the playing of bhajans on a loudspeaker.

According to media reports, a group of Muslims stormed the Shiv Temple on Friday evening and got into an argument with the priest, Prem Singh. The assailants, reportedly acting under the influence of village head Afzal Ali, threatened to evict Hindus from the village if loudspeakers were used again in the temple. Following the incident, the priest approached the police and filed a formal complaint against the assailants. Additional forces were deployed in the village to maintain law and order.

Details of the incident

According to reports, the confrontation between Islamists and Prem Singh started when the priest, as part of his daily prayers, played bhajans on the temple loudspeaker during the evening aarti. A group of Islamists, including Bhuri, Taufiq, Iqbal, Chhidda, Israel, Shaida, Shakeel, Munsa Ali, Gulnaz, Anees, and others, barged into the temple and demanded that he stop the music.

When the priest refused, they started hurling abuses. The mob forcibly dragged the priest outside and started beating him. Women in the accompanying mob reportedly shouted threats and warned that Hindus would be expelled from the village if loudspeakers were ever used in the temple again.

When the villagers learned about the incident, they rushed to rescue the priest. As soon as they arrived at the temple, the Islamist mob fled. However, before leaving, they issued a “final warning” to the priest, stating that he would be killed if he played bhajans again. Notably, Hindus are a minority in the village. Singh said that the village Pradhan Afzal Ali supported the attackers. Later, a police complaint was filed against the attackers.

Content of FIR filed by the Priest

Based on the priest’s complaint, an FIR has been registered at Tanda police station under Sections 191(2), 115(2), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In his complaint, the priest stated that on 7th March, at around 6:30 PM, he was inside the temple when the assailants arrived, dragged him outside, and started beating him. They warned him not to use the loudspeaker again and hurled abuses.

The attackers also threatened to kill the priest if he ever used the loudspeakers again. The priest told the police that the assailants claimed the village head was with them and that they would expel Hindus from the village. He further stated that the Hindu residents, already a small minority in the village, are living in fear following the incident.

Multiple assailants arrested, confirms police

In a statement on social media platform X, Rampur police confirmed that a case has been registered based on the priest’s complaint under relevant sections, and legal action has been taken by arresting 12 accused. The police further stated that the law and order situation is under control in the area.

Speaking to the media, station in-charge Omkar Singh stated that police presence has been increased in the village. The police suggested that it was a minor altercation and denied that a major assault took place. Circle Officer Kirtinidhi Anand stated that a peace committee meeting was held to ease tensions in the village.

More International shame for Pakistan: 10 Pakistanis with terror links arrested in Barcelona for instigating beheading of ‘blasphemers’

In Barcelona, Spain, the local Police has arrested 10 Pakistani Muslim nationals on charges of encouraging killings and beheading to avenge ‘blasphemy’. The Pakistani nationals booked on terrorism-related charges were part of an organised criminal network and were using messaging groups to issue violent jihadist orders. The arrested jihadis were linked to the Pakistani Islamic terror outfit Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The arrests were made after a joint operation conducted by the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia Police), Spanish National Police, and Italian law enforcement agencies.

In a statement, the Spanish authorities said that the arrested Pakistani nationals used encrypted communication channels to indoctrinate followers and identify potential targets in Europe for attacks and beheadings.

The Spanish National Police said that there was a women-only online group led by one of the arrested women, where the members used to share Islamic jihadist materials and select targets for attacks.

On 6th March 2025, the arrested accused were presented before Spain’s Central Investigation Court No. 6. The accused Pakistani jihadis faced charges including terror financing, recruitment for extremism, and supporting radicalisation. The judge ordered provisional imprisonment for four of the jihadis for their alleged participation in crimes of glorification, apologia, financing and indoctrination of Islamic terrorism.

According to the Spanish National Police, the investigation is part of the third phase of an ongoing operation. This operation has yielded 30 arrests in Spain over the past three years. Among those arrested on 3rd March 2025, ten were nabbed in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, while one was caught in Italy.

“During the operation, which was carried out on Monday, March 3, 11 people were arrested, ten during the early hours of Monday, in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, and another of the arrests the same day in Piacenza (Italy),” the Spanish authorities said.

This Jihadi terror network funding came mainly from regular contributions from its members, creating a self-sustaining system for its jihadist activities.

Basirhat temple vandalism: Police allege ‘no communal angle’, claim accused who attacked idol of Goddess Kali has ‘mental health issues’

Hours after it came to light that a Hindu temple was vandalised in Basirhat, the West Bengal Police on Sunday (9th March) took to social media to claim that there was ‘no communal angle’ behind the heinous crime.

While dubbing the incident as mere ‘mischief, ‘ the police stated, “Efforts are being made from certain quarters to spread misinformation and communal unrest regarding an incident in Basirhat today where an idol in a Kali Temple was found to be damaged.

The idol is being replaced and the person responsible for the mischief has been arrested,” it further added.

The police went on to claim that the extremist behind vandalism of the idol of Goddess Kali has ‘mental health issues.’

Preliminary enquiry suggests that the person has mental health issues. The situation is peaceful and under control. Police remains alert and vigilant. Harshest possible action shall be taken against those committing/attempting similar mischief anywhere in the state,” it concluded.

The Background of the Controversy

On Sunday (9th March), BJP leader Dilip Ghosh took to X (formerly Twitter) to inform about the attack on a Kali temple and the vandalism of the idol of the Hindu deity.

The incident occurred in Shankchura Bazar in Basirhat city in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

In a tweet, Dilip Ghosh said, “In a shocking incident, the idol of Goddess Kali was vandalized at the Kali temple in Shankhchura Bazaar, under the jurisdiction of the Basirhat Police Station.”

The BJP leader stated that the attack on the temple took place under the leadership of local TMC politician Shahanoor Mondal.

Amit Malviya, the national spokesperson of the BJP, also lashed out at the ruling dispensation in the State for failing to safeguard Hindu temples and idols of deities.

“After Jadavpur, another incident has emerged—an idol of Goddess Kali has been vandalized in Sankhachara Bazaar, located in the Basirhat South Assembly constituency,” he stated.

“Once again, the local Trinamool MLA might dismiss this as a BJP conspiracy or even claim that Hindus themselves are behind it as part of a plot,” Amit Malviya informed.

“Will Mamata Banerjee finally address the alarming rise in atrocities against Hindus over the past five days?” he inquired.

Indian cricket team clinches Champions Trophy 2025 by defeating New Zealand in Dubai final

Indian Cricket Team has won the Champions Trophy by defeating New Zealand in the finals in Dubai. Captain Rohit Sharma led the team from front in chasing the target of 252 set by the Kiwis. The Indian team crossed the target in 49 overs with 4 wickets in hand.

Sharma gave an explosive start to the Indian innings, but was out after he faced pressure following two wickets and a couple of maidan overs. He scored 76 of 83 balls before he was stumped by Tom Latham in a ball by Rachin Ravindra.

Sharma’s opening partner Shubham Gil scored 31 in 50 balls, while Virat Kohli disappointed with just 1. Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul brought the Indian inning to track after it faced a few slow overs in the middle following quick fall of wickets. Apart from Kohli, all other Indian batsmen made important contributions to the team total.

Earlier in the day, India lost the toss and New Zealand opted to bat first. The Kiwis got off to a flyer, with openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra putting on a strong partnership. They brought up 50 runs inside seven overs before Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Young for 15, breaking the opening stand at 57.

However, after that India’s spinners put on a stellar show to restrict New Zealand to 251/7. Despite a late counter-attack from Michael Bracewell, the Blackcaps struggled to accelerate in the middle against India’s disciplined bowling attack. New Zealand reached 100 in 19.2 overs but kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

This is India’s third ICC Champions Trophy title, having shared one with Sri Lanka in 2002 and securing the second under ‘Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni in 2013.

During the run-chase of 252 runs, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a fine start once again. Rohit was the aggressor against pacers, including 14 runs against Nathan Smith in eighth over, with two fours and a six.

India reached the 50-run mark in 7.2 overs.

At the end of 10 overs in the powerplay, India was 64/0, with Rohit (49*) and Gill (10*) unbeaten.

Rohit reached his half-century in 41 balls, with five fours and three sixes.

The Hitman continued collecting boundaries against spinners as India reached the 100-run mark in 17 overs.

The 105-run stand between Rohit and Gill ended with Gill being removed by Mitchell Santner thanks to a stunning catch from Glenn Phillips at covers. Gill was gone for 31 in 50 balls, with a six. India was 105/1 in 18.4 overs.

Michael Bracewell got the big wicket of Virat Kohli for just one run. India was 106/2 in 19.1 overs.

Spinners continued to bring Kiwis back in the game, with Rachin Ravindra removing Rohit for 76 in 83 balls, with seven fours and three sixes. India was 122/3 in 26.1 overs.

Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel stitched a partnership for India, with Iyer finding some timely boundaries and taking India to the 150-run mark in 32.5 overs.

Kiwis made a comeback as Santner removed Iyer for 48 in 62 balls, with two fours and two sixes, with a fine catch from Rachin near short fine leg. India was 183/4 in 38.4 overs, needing 69 in 69 balls.

KL Rahul and Axar helped India cross the 200-run mark in 40.5 overs. However, India’s run-chase encountered another obstacle, with Axar throwing away his wicket for 29 (in 40 balls, with a four and six) to Bracewell with a fine catch by William O’Rourke. India was 203/5 in 41.3 overs.

Hardik and KL brought back India into the equation with some fine strike rotation and odd boundaries, leaving India with 32 runs in 30 balls.

Hardik (18) holed it back to Kyle Jamieson while trying to pull it away. Ravindra Jadeja stuck the winning boundary to seal a memorable win for India.

Earlier, India’s spinners put on a stellar show to restrict New Zealand to 251/7 in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday in Dubai. Despite a late counter-attack from Michael Bracewell, the Blackcaps struggled to accelerate in the middle against India’s disciplined bowling attack.

After winning the toss, New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner opted to bat first. The Kiwis got off to a flyer, with openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra putting on a strong partnership. They brought up 50 runs inside seven overs before Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Young for 15, breaking the opening stand at 57.

Ravindra continued his attacking approach, scoring 37 off 29 balls, including four boundaries and a six, but was cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav as New Zealand found themselves at 69/2 in 10.1 overs. Kane Williamson, who scored a century in the semi-final against South Africa, couldn’t make an impact this time, falling to a brilliant caught-and-bowled effort by Kuldeep for just 11.

New Zealand reached 100 in 19.2 overs but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Tom Latham (14) was trapped lbw by Ravindra Jadeja, while Glenn Phillips (34) was bowled by Chakravarthy, leaving the Kiwis at 165/5 in 37.5 overs.

Daryl Mitchell played the anchor role, scoring a patient 63 off 101 deliveries before falling to Mohammed Shami in the 46th over. Shami, despite being expensive (1/74 in 9 overs), claimed his ninth wicket of the tournament. Skipper Santner (8) was run out by Virat Kohli, adding to New Zealand’s troubles.

However, Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten 53 off 40 deliveries, featuring three fours and two sixes, provided a late flourish, ensuring New Zealand reached a competitive total of 251/7.

India’s spinners were the key architects of the bowling performance. Varun Chakravarthy (2/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) were the standout performers, while Jadeja (1/30) and Axar Patel (0/29 in 8 overs) kept the pressure on with their economical spells.

Rohit Sharma’s score of 76 runs came a week after Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohamed took a dig at Indian cricket team captain, calling him ‘fat for a sportsman’. She also claimed that his career as captain, compared to his predecessors, is ‘mediocre’, triggering massive outrage.

First rear fuselage for LCA Mk1A made by Alpha Tocol Engineering handed over to HAL in Bengaluru

The first rear fuselage for Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A, produced by Indian Private Industry, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services Private Ltd, was handed over on Sunday to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Aircraft Division in Bengaluru.

In his address, the Defence Minister termed the handing over as a milestone in the historic journey of India’s defence manufacturing.

The ceremony is a testimony to India’s progress towards Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence and the government’s commitment towards enhanced public-private partnership, he said.

According to the Defence Ministry, Singh commended HAL and the private sector for constantly strengthening the Armed Forces with the latest platforms & technologies. He stated that HAL, through its integrated model and strategies, is not only bolstering the strength of soldiers but is also opening new dimensions of manufacturing and R&D by collaborating with the private sector.

A fuselage is the main body section of the aircraft, which holds the pilot, passengers and cargo, while the rear fuselage supports the tail section and its associated components.

The Defence Minister described HAL as the fuselage of the country’s defence and aerospace sector, with private companies such as L&T, Alpha Tocol, Tata Advanced Systems and VEM Technologies playing the role of rear fuselage, supporting HAL.

“Together with these Indian components, the aircraft which is being manufactured in our defence and aerospace sector will reach greater heights in the times to come,” he said.

Singh credited the bravery and dedication of the air warriors as well as the equipment being manufactured by the Indian public and private sectors for the growing strength of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

“While our courageous air warriors have made an invaluable contribution, the equipment being manufactured indigenously is providing them the added strength, with which they protect our borders,” he said, exuding confidence that HAL and the private sector will continue to overcome every challenge and bolster the Armed Forces in every way.

HAL had placed orders on various Indian private companies such as L&T, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), VEM Technologies and Lakshmi Mission Works (LMW) for supplying major modules for the 83 LCA Mk1A contract, the ministry further said.

HAL has already manufactured 12 LCA MK1A rear fuselages, which are on the aircraft in the manufacturing line. With this supply, a major structure module produced by an Indian private partner will be integrated into the LCA Mk1A aircraft, enabling HAL to meet additional delivery commitments for IAF from 2025-26 onwards.
